Hi! My name is Sam (they/them), and I write SFF.

I'm queer, in my late 20s, and I live in Europe.

Fiction I probably won't enjoy? Romance. Middle grade. Most High School YA. It's just not my cup of tea.

This blog is a mix of things related to my writing, from snippets, through info dumps, to historical trivia and inspirations for the setting. Also, cats.

I'm happy to do beta swaps.

About my writing:

Expect themes of found family, battling inner demons, finding one's identity and strength. But also, superpowered sword fights and epic locations. Don't expect romance front and centre, and don't expect characters who are minors. Most of my characters are openly queer; I enjoy seeing people I can identify with partake in fantasy adventures, without their identities being a burden.

I write multi-POV stories, 3rd person only. I'm not that keen on seemingly unrelated POVs coming together, but I love seeing group interactions through the eyes of a different person each time.

I like turning 'what if' questions into stories - what if the Chosen One was chosen by the villain? What if a Bronze Age civilisation experienced a first contact with an alien race? What would crime-scene investigation look like in a setting where people turn to dust upon death? I also love learning, and I learn by researching random areas that are tangentially related to my writing projects.

Are my fantasy settings too realistic? Maybe. Am I having fun writing it? Definitely.

Swords used to be the protectors of the world, channelling the power of the Elements to fight against the Primeval Darkness. Now that the threat is contained, they are perceived as a danger themselves. Their powers are feared, while any advantages they can give are made up for with developments in science.

The hero of the first instalment was deemed to dangerous to live or be killed. The Army's spymaster and the Chief Strategist set him up to die a hero's death.

Note: This was the first story I've written in this setting, with the pitch being 'the hero has just saved the world and needs to figure out what to do with his life'. It has evolved a fair bit since then.

Progress: Needs rewriting, now that the prequel is written.

Political fantasy.

The last - the only - war fought by Swords took place two millennia ago, and the memory of its horrors kept the princes motivated to stop it from happening ever again. When an uprising in one of the princedoms spills over the borders, it again becomes a real threat.

Urban fantasy version of the Eastern Bloc.

Three thousand years later, the heroes of the previous stories have passed into legends. There are no more Swords to protect, Crystals to heal, or Elemental Dancers to mend and build. There are only Knacked, shunned by the society.

First Contact Sci-Fi from the point of view of the alien species. While their civilisation is comparable to early Iron Age ones on Earth, don't worry, they have nukes.

Ellis Daling is many things--a powerless prince, a drunken rake, a charming musician. He spends his days suffocating in a palace where he has no place and his nights sneaking off to seedy taverns where he can forget who he is for a while.

But his life is turned upside down when a chance encounter with Carian, an infuriating rebel leader with mysterious origins, awakens magic he never knew he had--an ability sure to get him executed if the wrong person finds out about it.

Ellis is forced to turn to Carian for help learning to control his newfound powers and finds himself quickly pushed to the forefront of the rebel cause, caught precariously between his family, his beliefs, and his budding feelings for Carian. It's only a matter of time before he'll be forced to choose his priorities, and the fate of his nation may hinge on his decision.

Most of the stories I write are inspired by two things: fairytales and horror. A majority of my WIPs are either directly inspired or loosely based on some fairytale, folklore, or myth, and most are part of some genre of horror, whether it be Gothic, psychological, folk, survival, or supernatural. Also a lot of my writing influence comes from authors like Angela Carter, Sarah Waters, Caitlin Starling, Shirley Jackson, and Robin McKinley.

Whitechapel, London 1894. Sophie Wickes and her family struggle to survive, melancholy eats away at her father more and more with each passing day, and her passion for cultivating flowers procures no income. She must swallow her pride and set aside her hatred for England’s aristocracy when she’s offered a chance of employment by the reclusive Lord Edgar Cushing to tend the gardens of his Rosenthorne Hall. However, the estate, its gardens, and their master is nothing what Sophie expected. The house? Rotting, dilapidated, hideous. The gardens? The husk of something alive, whimsical, and beautiful. The master? Faceless, nothing more than a voice from the shadows. Despite her fear and anger, Sophie becomes enthralled by the garden’s potential for mystic, untainted beauty, and she develops a close friendship with Lord Cushing, even though he is nothing but a mere whisper of darkness that pleads for her to never seek him out. However, whatever enchantment the gardens and Lord Cushing’s voice bring her shatters as she begins to receive nightly visitations from a crooked-jawed phantom and butterflies who’s wings whisper of a bloody past and the truth behind the faceless lord's gentlemanly masquerade.

In a loose (and bloody) retelling of the King Lindworm folktale set against the backdrop of 1980s Milwaukee, two people try to navigate their unorthodox romance while an arcane, snake-like infection afflicts, and starts to change, one of them. Temperance Cavell, a six-foot tall woman living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, lives a quiet, unexciting, and demure existence running a convenience store with her mother. But despite her mother's overbearing nature, the nonstop caring of her ailing grandmother, and her near-nonexistent social life, she cannot complain. This life is quiet, she’s (somewhat) in control, and nothing is unexpected… That is until Jack Turner, the motorcycle-riding kleptomaniac with a heart of gold, bursts into her store one Saturday afternoon, and between them a romance reluctantly blooms. But such love is swiftly threatened to shatter when Jack’s body begins to betray him, contorting him into something that is completely, and utterly, non-human.

November, 1899. While on holiday in Cambridge and attending museum lectures with her mother, Jane Sterling seeks to make this her chance to officially pursue her love of paleontology. While her family encourages the pursuit of passions and challenging rigid social norms, the institutes in place hinder her passion, making her resort to dressing brightly and speaking loudly for attention. Jane's chance comes to reveal itself in the form of the wealthy and reclusive Sir Terence Hayes, who’s come in search for her father, the esteemed paleobotonist Dr. Samson Sterling, to appraise fossils found in his garden. Her mother eagerly volunteers Jane to go in Dr. Sterling’s place as he remains ill in America, and Terence brings her to his isolated family's estate in the vast, deep, muddy marshes of Wolf’s Run. And the land is shrouded in urban legends. There are whispers of 'The Wolf's Run Beast,' the 'Monster of the Marshes,' that haunts the land under the cover of night, and as Terence leaves Jane to her work he is hell-bent that she's to return to Cambridge before nightfall. However, freak storms rage, causing the marshes' waters to rise and wash out the roads in flash floods before Jane has a chance to return, leaving her stranded at Wolf’s Run - and at the mercy of all that lurks there. As night looms, the staff hastily depart, an eerie silence falls, Terence forbids her from even coming near the cellar, and, most importantly, he warns her against leaving her room before dawn. All is merely a strange act to Jane, brushing it off as the eccentricities of an Englishman, until something comes scratching at her door, hungering for her blood. What started as a mere chance at becoming known swiftly becomes a tumultuous game of blood, teeth, survival, love, and salvation - and Jane must prepare to sharpen teeth of her own if she's to survive the horrors of the Wolf's Run marshes.

However, she is a woman in a predominately male profession, a woman without a voice–literally and figuratively–and she wants to make a name for herself without relying on whatever legacy her father left behind. When the presence of a serial killer who the media has named “The Big Bad Wolf” on account of the strange, animalistic nature of his murders that occur on the nights of a full moon begin to plague the streets of Milwaukee, Selene sees this as her opportunity to prove herself and her skills to her peers, and she tasks herself and her partner Det. Apollo Esposito to hunt him down. But it swiftly becomes apparent that the man they are hunting is no man, and may instead be a dreaded creature of folklore–one that is now keen on hunting them down in a blood-red game of cat and mouse…

Loosely based on the fairytales Sleeping Beauty and East of the Sun, West of the Moon, as well as Scandinavian folklore, The Faeries and The Lark follows three faeries–spirits of nature–raising a human child they’ve named Lark, the princess of a sun-worshipping kingdom wiped out by a subterranean society of trolls. The faeries devote their lives to protecting Lark from the worlds of man by raising her to believe she’s one of the fae, and to keep her deep in the forest so that she can remain hidden from the trolls that restlessly hunt for the princess that escaped their massacre. But everything the three faeries worked hard for is put to the test when Lark encounters a human named Sigrid, the toughened, sword-wielding chancellor’s daughter from a neighboring moon-worshipping kingdom that’s threatened to be swallowed by the fairies’ forest, and every aspect of her life as she’d known them threaten to crumble around her.

NaNoWriMo 2023: Beyond Alder Creek

Round 2 (AKA the second draft)

Genre | Fantasy POV | 3rd person limited, past tense Setting | A fictional turn-of-the-20th-century town and its counterpart, the fae realm of the Beyond Themes | Human nature, Folklore, Trust, Familial Bonds, Friendship

Synopsis

When Winnie Pewitt first heard about her brother, Bran's, abduction by the fae, she couldn't believe the acceptance of his fate by the townsfolk around her. But when she goes to investigate his last known whereabouts, and stumbles upon a strange man within a faerie ring offering to strike a deal, Winnie runs home without looking back. As the days pass, and Bran's funeral looms over the town, Winnie finds herself turning over the strange man's offer. With nothing more than an idea, a hatpin, and a book on all that's known of the fae realm, the Beyond, Winnie seeks out the faerie ring once more. But this time, she won't be caught unprepared.

Before Winnie, perfectly centered in the ring, stood a strange man. He seemed entirely carved out of gold - no, there was life in his features that even the greatest sculptor could’ve have imitated. It was more like the touch of Midas, a life captured beneath the shimmering hue. His face might’ve been fine, had he the look of a mortal man, but the effect was quite lost in his aureate complexion. “My dear, who might you be?” When the man spoke, his voice was high and rang like a bell. A wide smile revealed a row of gleaming, golden teeth. Had she let herself be caught in shock by the unearthly presentation before her, Winnie might’ve answered him. In fact, she began to, only managing to cut herself off after, “Well, I am - ” His smile stretched slightly wider, and the friendliness in his eyes gleamed suddenly with greed, snapping Winnie out of her reverie. “ - you may call me a friend.” Rather than annoyance, Winnie’s introduction was met with amusement. The golden man’s smile twitched for a moment into a smirk. “Tell me then, friend, what is it you seek?” he asked.

"Wait for the Moon II."

Opening on Friday, March 3rd, 2023 at Arch Enemy Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is the group exhibiton "Wait for the Moon II" which features works inspired by Grimms Fairy Tales.

More than two hundred years ago, German brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm traveled Europe to collect, transcribe, and transform the oral folklore told for centuries before them. The stories, known as the Grimm’s Fairy Tales, have united a world of wondrous possibility with beauty, horror, violence, and magic for generations.

In this exhibition, twenty-five of the Grimms’ classic characters and beloved stories come to life in New Contemporary paintings, sculptures, and mixed media works. From the humorous to the melancholic, the whimsical to the macabre, we are captivated by the timeless enchantment artists have achieved in these fresh interpretations of the archetypal fantasy narrative.

Artists in Wonderland - Number 3

Welcome to Artists in Wonderland! Running till the 4th of July, I’ve been counting down My Top 10 Favorite Illustrators for “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland!” Today we’ve entered the Top Three! The Lewis Carroll stories of Alice are as immortal as they are odd, and many great artists have handled them in different ways. This countdown will pay homage to just a few of them. Our 3rd Place illustrator is considered one of the most definitive and classic. Today’s artist is Arthur Rackham!

At first glance, Rackham was not the obvious choice to be an illustrator for “Alice.” He started off his working life as a fire insurance agent, of all things, and later became a reporter and occasional illustrator for tabloid magazines in the late 1800s. (A job he despised, outright referring to these endeavors as “hack work.”) However, ever since he was a child, Rackham had always loved various pieces of fiction, and had also always had a passion for art. It wasn’t until he married his wife - painter Edyth Starkie - that he was encouraged to pursue his artistic endeavors more fervently. Starting in 1905, and lasting well into the mid-1930s (before his eventual passing in 1939), Rackham illustrated numerous books of fantasy, mythology, and folklore. Among his most famous volumes are an illustrated version of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (because…yeah, apparently illustrating stage plays is/was a thing), and editions of Grimm’s Fairy-Tales, Rip Van Winkle, Gulliver’s Travels, and a collection of Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes, not to mention horror stories like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow or the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Rackham’s work, in many ways, revolutionized illustration as an art form. For one thing, it was largely thanks to Rackham that the typical format of publication we know today, for so many books, exists. His art style was inimitable by common engravers, who had previously been the ones who allowed greater mass production of illustrations. Due to the technology of the time, he could have his pieces photographically reproduced, which allowed his detailed linework to stand uninhibited. However, such techniques were costly, so to subsidize things, he and his publishers would have the books first published in special limited editions with hardcovers, some of these even autographed by the illustrator himself. Then, later on, they would also publish less expensive editions for the mass market, ensuring that the illustrator and his publishers would make their money back, one way or another. This is how many books are still published today. Rackham tackled Wonderland in 1907; one of his earliest creations. That was the year the copyright on Carroll’s books ran out, and almost immediately after that happened, Rackham’s publishers commissioned him to create a new illustrated edition of the stories. The man leapt at the chance: the “Alice” stories were among his favorite books, and he relished the chance to bring his own unique spin to the characters and settings of “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” At the time, Rackham’s illustrations were somewhat controversial: keep in mind, for years, Sir John Tenniel’s illustrations were the ONLY ones around. Rackham certainly kept Tenniel’s concepts in mind when he made his own pictures for the book, but went in a different, unique direction that was totally his own, at the same time. In a way, it was Arthur Rackham who opened the door to all the other illustrators we’ve discussed so far: he was one of the first, and certainly the best, to immediately follow Tenniel, and showed that there were always new ways of interpreting old classics. What I love about Rackham’s illustrations for “Alice” is the mood he creates. His Wonderland is, as has been described by one reviewer on the subject, “both grotesque and tender.” The characters just look…off, in a lot of places, but there’s also a lot of humor and magic to his world. His color palette is also more muted - lots of browns and grays, with even the brighter hues, such as green and red, being less intense than you’ll find in most illustrations before or since. His Wonderland feels somehow cozy and creepy at the same time, it’s a feeling that’s difficult to describe, yet so completely his own. It’s also clever how Rackham sticks to the source, so to speak. He keeps to a lot of the rules Tenniel set, but he designs things in a way that is absolutely his own. The characters are still recognizable from the earlier precedents, but they aren’t exactly the same. They somehow seem both more realistic and yet more bizarre than ever before, at the same time. His work is also more detailed, more lush than Tenniel’s original illustrations. Most noticeably, the backgrounds are much more exotic and meticulously crafted, really bringing Wonderland to life in a way that hadn’t been done before. Unfortunately, despite the impact of Rackham’s illustrations, getting hold of the book isn’t so easy nowadays. As far as I can tell, the only affordable way to buy it is via Pook Press: these publishers specialize in reprinting a lot of vintage-age books at affordable prices, and they have a whole collection of “Alice” editions with various old-time illustrators, including Arthur Rackham’s edition. Last I checked, the Pook Press Rackham book was available on Amazon, and I think there are e-book copies as well, if you look around. If you can, definitely check this version out.

Kill your Darlings

So I’ve been building a Freak Troupe for few years now...

Zey have not been really posted here, I don’t really use zis site as much as I really should, and I do plan on starting to bring ze rest of zem over…

It started as only nine, but ze numbers have been steadily increasing as more and more ideas flow and come to me…

Each freak possessing ze same rules:

1. Some kind of monster. Folklore, Cryptid, Fantasy… Ze more obscure ze better~ 2. Some kind of circus/freakshow/street sideshow or main attraction… 3. Some kind of hobby… Originally I had much more restriction on zis rule in particular, but I eventually let up on zese restrictions to give myself more options…

Zis zese rulesets, it vas originally just supposed to be some art exercises to help me develop better as an artist, but after ze 3rd and 4th ones… it became somezing so so much more to me Now zis all zat said, I have been vanting to make a character based around a Nuckelavee for a vhile now… Ze design is so fucking cool, I love how uncanny and lobsided zey are depicted as… It vas one of ze designs I vanted to make as ze original set of nine even… but it just never looked good to me… it alvays failed… and I tried so hard... viz so many iterations... and I vant to share zat story as a cautionary tale... -------------------- I do not have it on hand, but ze very first iteration vas basically half a torso on unicycle, viz sword hilt sticking out for head... (Unknown Monster)/Unicyclist/Forger as your elements... Ze design vas not developed enough to survive ze cutting room floor vhen ozer designs simply out shown it, so zen came ze first design I have records of...

Zis is vhen Nuckelavee and daredevil became inseperable in my mind, I vas convinced zis vas paring zat HAD to vork... But zis design in particular, ze horse felt to veak, ze rider bit to normal persay?... Scrapped.

V3 felt bit better, and honestly had I tried to vork bit more on zat horse zis is probably ze design I vould have ended up staying viz, but horses are hard... So vhat better decision to make zan to replace ze horse viz somezing I suck even more at draw?

Viz him being daredevil, having him have bike make sense to me... I really did love ze idea of ze bike being just rocket viz vheels, but cars and bikes are still a veak point for me...

I vould try to make ze bike bit more streamlined so references could help more... and I did like it... I still do... Big problem zough, ze Nuckelavee disappeared in zese iterations, it became more of a headless horseman... If I vas villing to separate Nuckelavee from boz Daredevil and ze idea of having bomb head, zen zis design also vould have been great... but I couldn't let go of ze ear vorm of an idea...

So I tried again... came up viz sketch zat yet again I vas super happy viz... but I could not for ze life of me get ze colour to look good or to pop in good vays... So I tried to make some big changes...

I tried to take ze same idea, same pose and give it different zeme... Again... despite loving it, it just didn't look quite right once I started to try and give it full render, so I scrapped it again and tried again...

Ze last one gave me ze idea of "Vhat if zis vas ze concept of ze Horseman of Var"? And idea created zis character... A cactus knight vielding a gun lance, whos spikes could put anyone in frenzy... Var vhere ever he vent... but it had anozer problem... Nuckelavee vas replaced viz headless horseman again... Daredevil vas replaced viz jousting... ze original idea of him being a drug addicted has been missing since he lost of bike... Eventually I had to ifnally admit to it... ze design vasn't fucking vorking... So I took all ze elements I vanted and gave zem new homes... My very first unicycle idea vill get ze daredevil idea... basically sticking half a mummy on one wheel and called it cast... basically a joke character... Ze Nuckelavee vill be saved for ze Horseman of War... Attached to a train, called "Engine of War" And ze new character I basically just created, tvisted and warped...

Weed Wacker... Dullahan/Jousting/Pumpkin Carving... Originally all ze cactus vas suppoed to be pumpkins, but zis is ze character zat replaced ze last iteration... Killing it... It only felt appropriate for zem to be vearing pieces from him like a trophy. I vorked on zis character for vell over year... so many times if I had been able to disconnect some ideas from eachozer I could have been done so much sooner... but I held onto one zought for so long... it caused ze death of so many designs zat vill likely never see ze light of day again... Alvays been open to huge changes... No idea is so precious it is immune to execution... Kill your darlings... it vill help you in ze long run.

Black Moon Lilith and Lilith the Character Archetype: My Reflections Coming out of Black Moon Lilith Conjunct the North Node

Following the astrological transits, both the collective and my personal, I have for a while noticed that when Black Moon Lilith is at play, it’s really hard for this to go unnoticed in my life. I always could sense this energy, I knew what it felt like, but used to find it hard to describe, or at least to dissect enough to understand with any valuable meaning.

Physically speaking, the astronomical point known in astrology as Black Moon Lilith is the point along the Moon’s orbit that is farthest from Earth (the lunar apogee), a point that changes position in the zodiac along with the changing orbit of the moon. To me it makes sense this point can be so potentially relevant to us, as all living beings are very much guided by the Moon, who keeps us in connection with each other. Out where the Black Moon is, in this metaphorical place of exile, it’s more of an “every man (or woman!) for himself!” vibe. Lilith is very much about the instinct of self preservation. It’s about resisting control or exploitation by others (and/or internalizing its effects). Often the two occur together as two faces of the same trauma. Black Moon Lilith represents the areas where life has taught us that we absolutely must advocate for ourselves. However, she can also bring shame and denial of wants wherever she is placed, or transiting, because this is something that generally develops where we have been told or shown we can’t have something.

Black Moon Lilith is in fact named for Lilith in the old testament/Jewish folklore, and the way we have come to make sense of its effects (rather, its correlations to our lives) is in considerable measure inspired by this character, and her archetype- who has many interpretations. Lilith was Adam’s first wife, before Eve, who left his ass! She refused to lie beneath him during sex, saying they were created equal. I think we can interpret this metaphorically, of course, as resistance to being controlled in many potential terms… but also literally, as there is a focus of unconstrained sexuality concerning Lilith, which I have observed has some definite relevance to the Black Moon too, but is far from the only or even the most important way to understand it.

Various legends say that after fleeing Eden, Lilith went on to become a she-demon/succubus/baby kidnapper/baby killer/so on….. (those are just the accusations I’m recalling off the top of my head). But over these many years, Lilith has picked up many other story lines, provided inspiration for phenomena such as Black Moon Lilith, and gained many evolving faces and interpretations. Other than being a religious figure, and/or a she-demon, some of her contemporary associations include witchcraft/dark magic, creative renditions in fantasy and horror, gothic culture, and the biggest switch of all, her status as the first feminist.

As a potent force from the most distant shadows of the Moon’s reach, where connection to one another is compromised and we must turn to ourselves to defend our basic natures, I’ve found that Black Moon Lilith can have both positive correlations- such as going one’s own way where it truly benefits one’s life, putting one’s foot down to mistreatment, and stepping into one’s personal power- and negative correlations such as pushing away and/or disregarding other people, general concern with defending one’s own initiatives, to the point where it is premature or anti-productive, and the shame, denial and/or rage that many have developed from being disallowed their power by others.

How we express Black Moon Lilith can be instigating healthy boundaries on one hand, and setting up unnecessary walls of defense on the other. It can be self respect on one hand, and self obsession/failure to consider others, on the other. It can be self protection on one hand, and self sabotage on the other. It can be shame and denial over who we really are/what we really want on one hand, and it can be where we liberate ourselves from shame on the other. Very often, it seems to dole out as a complicated mix of both the “bad” and the “good”.

It used to be that reflecting on my own experiences, despite my fascination with it, there was very little “good” I saw about the Black Moon’s correlations in my life. I came to associate the energy of Black Moon Lilith with a few of my “trauma responses” that have caused me to sabotage relationships. I felt she had helped me stand up for myself/walk away from people a few times when I actually needed to, but for the most part, she seemed to just make me quick to unconsciously wreck budding relationships, reject others, put up lots of walls, or not want to cooperate/compromise with others- even though this was also betraying my own desires deep down to be close with others. My natal Lilith is in Libra in my 7th house, so the relational element of her is especially relevant.

I think that this Black Moon wound of mine in the realm of partnerships has several big origins/perpetuators I can site, but one of the first and biggest that I can consciously analyze, is having internalized the messages I was told by a parent growing up (not necessarily said in as blunt of terms as I received them) that no one would ever want to be with me because I am too difficult to live with. (I was also shown this when my parents sent me elsewhere to live.) Internalizing this message about myself stripped away my personal power when it comes to partnerships. For so long I approached all relationships assuming they were damned to end before they ever got too serious (something I still do struggle with), and I long believed, a belief that at some times was not as much conscious as it was confirmed with my deeply engrained unconscious behaviors of sabotage, that a ‘true’ and committed relationship is simply something I can’t have. This long internalized belief has given rise to many of my independent behaviors in relationships... both in destructive ways that compromise my connection with others and/or alienate them, and in positive senses that protect my individuality and self respect.

Here’s the thing. I was never wrong to see my trauma responses in the force of Black Moon Lilith. Black Moon Lilith and Lilith the archetype are in fact rooted in trauma. We mustn’t trivialize that part. The defense mechanisms, rage, shame, denial, sabotage, the desire to leave people and things behind, and the general mechanisms for self-preservation which can accompany Lilith stem from instances where we have felt held down, lead to believe we don’t have power, mistreated, and in some cases even horribly abused/violated. But the reality of Black Moon Lilith’s painful origins does not make it all a bad thing! It can be a very empowering thing potentially, because where we are hurt is also where we can find the avenues for healing, and for gaining acceptance of our most authentic self and desires. And there is a very good reason we develop many of these less than savory reactions from traumatic experiences and messaging. Lilith teaches us to recognize our boundaries, and to reclaim the personal power that once was lost! - even if at times we may run too far with these prerogatives in stubborn quests for independence and personal autonomy wherever she resides.

Though I have been fascinated by and intent to ponder Black Moon Lilith for probably over a year now, my reflections on it, and later on the character Lilith for which the lunar apogee is named, have really gained a lot of new ground during this last month+ of Black Moon Lilith’s conjunction to the North Node. (Which is currently separating, but still in effect.) The Lunar North Node is another very important point in relation to the Moon’s orbit, which shows the path forward. Black Moon Lilith with the North Node in Gemini has proven too be so ripe with many new experiences for me to learn about Lilith. It’s hard to say if anything has actually changed about my relationship with Lilith, or if I am just starting to see more of the positive in her that was always there, instead of just noticing and perpetuating the glaring negative. Also, I decided it was about time to accept Lilith as a part of who I am. I can’t deny the power the associated energies and the archetype has had on my life, so I might as well embrace it- both the good parts and the parts that are a work in progress. (And that is the story of my new little stud earrings with the Black Moon Lilith symbol!)

One aspect of my relationship with Lilith that I think actually has started to bloom forth in more of a clear-cut positive way with this Lilith-North Node transit, is finding the power to actively and productively embrace a part of myself, via finding/claiming opportunities to keep cultivating this part, even though it’s meant having to disregard my reservations, and even fighting through some shame. I can see now that there is a whole world of great personal empowerment to be tapped into with Lilith, and not just in the ability to leave people behind. (But of course leaving people behind is one means she’ll employ, if it is necessary for stepping into her power!)

I have always seen myself as a writer. It’s not even by choice, and a great deal of the time, for a very long time, I have really resented this natural compulsion of mine. You see, I have a deeply complicated relationship with writing, one that undoubtedly needs some healing. Well, this Black Moon Lilith/North Node conjunction in Gemini, moving through my 3rd house of communications (and as I only found out the other day, also conjunct my natal White Moon Selena, i.e. the lunar perigee/polarity to Black Moon Lilith) ended up bringing me my first opportunities ever getting paid to write… something I guess I just used to assume I couldn’t do, due to my lack of a college degree, as well as the difficult relationship with writing and my paralyzing perfectionism. But with this transit, I placed aside my assumptions of what wasn’t possible for me, and I have some hope now that accepting the opportunity to write for other people, on subjects that generally don’t even mean anything to myself, may just turn out to be the good dose of objectivity needed to help restore some healing to my writing relationship.

Once again, where you’ll find the wounds in your relationship with your personal power, is also where you’ll find how to heal them, and use them to empower yourself and others- and that healing is really what Black Moon Lilith conjunct the North Node has been trying to facilitate for us all. Of course, the process is basically never straightforward and easy, nor all enjoyable. This transit has brought a wide range of Lilith experiences in my life to comment upon.

Some other occurrences have been: abruptly ending an extended off and on relationship with someone where there was always a good deal of power struggle (and would have been power imbalance if I had not stood my ground in a lot of instances), unconsciously driving away or creating distance with a few friends, being consciously and stubbornly persistent in putting more distance between myself and my family than ever before, and facing a couple situations providing awkward trial and error experiments in how I communicate my dissatisfaction to others who wronged me. But I know that all of these experiences are helping me to evolve, and to better understand my responses which stem from wounds that have set into me with the nature of Black Moon Lilith.

And I marvel at the fact that millions of other humans have also been going through experiences which are forcing them to confront and/or evolve their own instincts and behaviors associated with the Black Moon, whether they realize it or not.

Lilith says, “These are my boundaries[or conditions]. You will respect them, or I am outta here.” She says, ‘I know what I am capable of, so I’m gonna fight for it- even if I have to shut out other people.” The placement of our natal Black Moon Lilith shows a prominent area where power has been stolen from us, whether through physical or psychological means (and where the Black Moon is transiting can bring up these issues in other areas, as well). Lilith develops from a wound, and her determination to not feel the powerlessness again can serve as either the healing or the perpetuation of it.

This is where the (currently separating) conjunction of Black Moon Lilith and the North Node occurred, so the house in your natal chart where it’s transiting, and any natal placements that may be in aspect to this point, especially conjunctions and oppositions, may be able to show where/how you have embodied or encountered Black Moon Lilith energy in recent times.

NOTE :

If anyone is wondering which “Lilith” in astrology I have been referring to, since it is a fairly infamous fact that there are actually 4 things bearing this name in astrology… I have for the most part only followed the mean calculation of Black Moon Lilith (and with Black Moon Lilith’s conjunction to the North Node, mean Lilith is what I’m referring to).

There is also Osculating Black Moon Lilith (aka True Lilith), which is a different calculation of the same concept I have discussed with Black Moon Lilith. A calculation that is actually technically more precise about the moon’s orbit, for the moment that it is taken, as the lunar apogee technically jumps around a little bit a whole lot… yet I have personally found Mean Lilith to be more worth following, especially when following collective transits, if trying to examine the effects of something lingering over an extended period of time, or if conceptualizing Black Moon Lilith’s cycles throughout the entire zodiac. I don’t doubt that the calculation of osculating Black Moon Lilith (which often is not too far from the mean calculation) has a lot of validity to it too though, perhaps especially for natal chart interpretations, and progressions.

As for the other two Liliths, there is the asteroid Lilith- but that is named for a French composer, not the Lilith archetype as we know her. Not saying it isn’t something worth looking into, it just hasn’t been a point of focus for me. And lastly, there is Dark Moon Lilith (aka Waldemath Moon), which is said to be a dark body of unknown origin revolving around the Earth- but there is a lot of debate as to whether it actually exists. I don’t have an opinion one way or another, and I haven’t followed it in transits. However, its placement in my natal chart, with an opposition to Black Moon Lilith for one, does peak my interest.

My legit firs reaction when I watched one particular episode of Hilda Season 2. I really adored Hilda when it first came out, and was ecstatic with the confirmation of season 2. Sadly, I didn't watch immediately due to LIFE stuff. When I eventually found the time to sit down and watch, I wasn't disappointed and now hoping for the 3rd season. For any of you who love urban fantasy, charming towns, Scandinavian folklore and magic, and a charming kid protagonist, you'll love Hilda.

wip introduction - chthonic hearts (novel)

i’ve only recently started this, so much of it may change and i’ll probably come up with a better title someday. tag: #chthonichearts

genre: contemporary fantasy, horror, paranormal, romance, lgbtq+

pov: multiple povs (between 2 and 4, not 100% sure yet), currently writing in 3rd person but have been considering switching to 1st person for several or all of them

status: mostly planning but also writing some small parts

summary: moving to a new, rural town was supposed to be a new and happy start for paris and calliope’s family, and while it certainly was a sharp beginning to a new chapter of their lives, it was one that was gruesome and that the two wish could dissolve into a silly nightmare. suddenly orphans, the twins seem to have only one safe place in the dangerous town surrounded by a looming forest and sadistic wildlife - their house. it has stood on cursed ground and withstood nature’s battles for decades, and its protective power allows the siblings a place of refuge. yet a new chapter is coming to the town as well. as the curse grows, the house weakens, and the main characters must seek a solution. they turn to that which is not of this world - as calliope makes friends with the house and its servant, paris wades deeper and deeper into the land of the fey. the two try to find answers and a way out, wanting safety and revenge, and as they do they begin being consumed by the fabled, and soon fall in love with it.

history: i first got the idea when thinking about a way to reverse the haunted house cliche. since then it has evolved to take inspiration from folklore that i grew up hearing about - the ukrainian house spirits called ‘domoviki’. the setting, cottagecore horror themes, and the fey were definitely on my mind bc of the media that i was consuming - the horror podcast “mabel” and the horror book “mexican gothic” - and the project has grown from there!

themes: sacrifices for love, discussion on wherever natural things are inherently good, loss of humanity, isolation, the impact people have on nature, one’s view of the world being altered, elitism regarding world views, separation from humanity, feelings of disembodiment, dealing with grief, power of nature

characters:

paris (trans man, he/him): one of the human siblings who moved to the town. paris shares his sister’s passion for science, but has more of a focus on plants and animals than her. he wants the best for everyone but has internalized the idea that he can only make things better by staying out of other people’s way. he may lash out in anger at times, but always hates himself for it, and is distrustful of people. he can be very defensive of himself. he likes helping animals and making art, and oftentimes makes art for others in secret and gives it to them anonymously to make them happy. after he and his sister are left on their own, he quickly decides that helping her and mina will mess up their work and instead plunges deeper into the forest, where he meets ty and quickly labels him as an enemy.

calliope (demigirl, she/her): paris’s twin sister. calliope likes biology and is into stem, and was looking forward to having a new room dedicated to her research, though there have been complications to that. she wears a lot of bright colors and radiates happiness. she smiles a lot and likes spending time with others, encouraging them to be more confident, but she can also hyperfocus on her research and forgets about others. despite being outwardly very nice, she oftentimes struggles with balancing others and her interests, and oftentimes doubts wherever she is a good person. she soon meets mina and the two try their best to help the house with mina’s knowledge of housekeeping and calliope’s knowledge of biology and desire to help and keep herself safe.

mina (genderfluid - she/they): mina cares for and shares life with the house, mending it and taking care of it, living between walls and inside ceilings. this is not the first time that someone has died in their house, but it is the first time that they are the only housekeeper to nurse the home back to health after. they have a fascination with humans and oftentimes wish they were one. she likes their loud music and bright colors, and is kind of a wannabe punk, but you wouldn’t guess it from their quiet and secluded demeanor. isolated and lonely, mina is drawn to the twins and attempts to befriend them.

clandestine “ty” (transmasc nb,he/they): ty is a fey who lives in the forest surrounding the town, and has a reputation for trouble and rule-breaking. he tends to be very polite and even romantic and flirtatious, but can also be heartless at times. they are very curious and adventurous, and this is often the reason for their troublemaking. as a young kid he formed an interest in humans, though he is unsure of wherever he likes them or hates them. he and paris begin to cross paths and while paris’s attitude towards them is hostile, clandestine is more curious about him than antagonistic.

aesthetic: dark cottagecore - moss covering the trees, earth, and rocks like a protective blanket, alluring mushrooms protruding from the earth, droplets of water freckling a spiderweb, vines climbing up and plaguing a house, tangled forests dazed with morning mist as crawling shapes can be seen in the distance (are they trees? or are they something more dangerous...), ferns reclaiming a cemetery, bottles filled with berries and bones, a dangerous animal’s teeth hanging above one’s bed, the spine of a building long descended into the ground
