For Disney fans out there that were old enough to remember watching the Aladdin tv series premiere in February 1994, I wonder how they reacted to seeing Iago hanging out with the good guys in those initial 9 episodes that aired BEFORE The Return of Jafar was released (May 1994).

November 5, 2024
When the Disney Afternoon premiered in 1990, kids tossed their backpacks aside to watch their favorite Disney television characters. Unlike with feature films, these stars had a new adventure every weekday, and their audience journeyed with them on a daily basis. Throughout the '80s and '90s, Disney raised the bar with a lineup of innovative, high-quality television animation. The characters were endearing, the writing was clever, and the art was exceptional. Those who grew up with these characters have continued their love affairs for shows like Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, TaleSpin, and the irrepressibly beloved DuckTales, deep into adulthood. For the first time, learn the history of the Disney Afternoon shows, read interviews from the creative teams, and revel in rare, behind-the-scenes artwork, plus get the full making of story of the modern-day DuckTales series and the meta-driven Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers film and its legacy connections to the past for a new generation of fans.

what's up with disney adults? just saw someone having a fit because people were jokingly referring to mickey mouse as "mike rat" or "ricky rat" or something along those lines and it was just so embarassing to read
“Disney Adults” is an upcoming series like Marvel’s “What If?” or “Rugrats: All Grown Up” in which non-canonical segments detail the adulthood of various Disney characters.
The first Episode, “Snow White And The Seventh Mortgage” depicts the classic princess as she ventures into the Kingdom of Welsfargeaux to pay her bills. It was premiered at SDCC to rave reviews. The second is said to portray Pinocchio’s years working as an IKEA designer, with subsequent episodes depicting Anna and Elsa’s disputes with Nestle over ice patents; Rapunzel’s lawsuit against Garnier Fructis; and Aladdin dealing with his HOA trying to fine him for a broken fence that the HOA’s own painters intentionally broke rather than asking him to unlock.
The new series is expected to shy away from the more complex issues that plagued Disney’s cancelled previous attempts such as the graphic dental trauma in “The People Vs. P. Sherman 42 Wallaby Way” and “Beauty and the Yeast" which was thankfully just about making beer but the title gave parents the wrong idea and mass protests ensued.

With the release of the Little Mermaid (2023) trailer, I want to tell you all about the gay man who saved Disney
After the death of Walt Disney in 1966 and Roy Disney in 1971, the Disney Animation Studio floundered for over a decade and a half. The movies released following the Disneys’ deaths did not do well at the box office or with critics, and the company began losing money quickly. It didn’t help that during the production of The Fox and The Hound, Don Bluth along with a bunch of other Disney animators left the company to start their own animation studio.
After The Fox and The Hound released in 1981, Michael Eisner (best known as the inspiration for Lord Farquad) took over after Walt Disney’s nephew resigned as CEO. Michael Eisner came into the company with the sentiment that they “had no obligation to make art”, and released The Black Cauldron in 1985 to critical and commercial failure. The company hit rock bottom and in response, Eisner moved the animation studio out of the buildings that were DESIGNED FOR ANIMATORS TO ANIMATE IN and into various hangers, warehouses, and trailers. Eisner was about to get rid of the animation studio for good until Walt Disney’s nephew intervened. Thanks to the mild success of The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver and Company, Eisner gave the animation studio another chance.
That’s where our man comes in.
Tumblr media
Howard Ashman was born in Baltimore, Maryland in May of 1950. He and Alan Menken (the composer for many many many Disney films) collaborated on The Little Shop of Horrors. Ashman was the lyricists, librettist, and director of the project while Menken wrote the music. They were nominated for a Grammy Award and Ashman received a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Lyrics. Ashman then wrote the screenplay for the Frank Oz film adaptation of the musical.
Ashman was brought in to Disney to write a song for Oliver and Company. While there, he was told about several projects the animation studio had on the back burner, one of which was The Little Mermaid.
Ashman became a driving force behind the creation of The Little Mermaid and subsequently, all of the Disney films made between 1989 and 1999. He explained to the animation team how musical theater and animated films were made for each other, and how they had the exact same amount of suspension of disbelief for audiences, which made them a perfect substitute for live action movie musicals which had gone out of fashion after the 1960s.
Ashman wrote all the lyrics to the songs in The Little Mermaid and insisted that Alan Menken be brought on to write the score and music. It was Menken’s first ever movie score and he fucking nailed it. Ashman was the one who insisted on bringing on actors who had musical theater backgrounds. He also insisted that Sebastian the crab be Jamaican so he could include Caribbean inspired music and have an “up” number during the movie. He explained to the writers how musicals were structured, where to include songs, and how those song would weave themselves into the story and feel natural. Ashman was credited as a producer on the film, which was released in 1989 to ENORMOUS SUCCESS. Ashman then went on to write the lyrics to the songs in Beauty and the Beast and three songs from Aladdin, the latter of which he pitched to Disney as an animated musical and wrote a treatment for.
After the release of The Little Mermaid, Ashman revealed to Menken that he had tested positive for HIV/AIDs. Jeffery Katzenburg, the then animation director at Disney, fully supported Ashman during the making of Beauty and the Beast, even creating a studio near his home in New York so he could work easier while receiving treatment. He got to see a private early screening of Beauty and the Beast before he lost his eyesight. He died of heart failure seven months before the film was released in November of 1991.
Beauty and the Beast received a standing ovation at its premiere and was the first and only animated movie to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, a decade before the Best Animated Feature category was added. The film is dedicated to Howard Ashman, a message at the end of the film reading, "To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful.“ Beauty and the Beast won for Best Original Song at the Oscars, the award presented to Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. Ashman’s partner Bill Lauch accepted the posthumous award for Ashman, making it clear to the audience that he and Howard were a couple and loved each other. Disney was furious that Lauch had said those things during his acceptance speech.
Following Ashman’s death, the 2002 special DVD release of Beauty and the Beast added the song “Human Again” which Ashman and Menken wrote but was cut from the original film. The DVD also featured a special short called Howard Ashman: In Memorium. It features many people from the animation studio talking about Ashman and his invaluable contributions to the films he worked on. Jeffery Katzenburg said that there were two angels watching over them during his days at Disney: Walt Disney himself, and Howard Ashman.
If it weren’t for Howard Ashman, a gay man who died of AIDs in 1991, Disney would not be what it is today. They would have continued to flounder and eventually have gone under. Ashman brought Disney back to life and gave us unforgettable films and inspired countless others. He was the backbone of the Disney Renaissance, creator of the formula that these films followed and allowed them to succeed where previous films hadn’t.
And the modern Disney Corporation refuses to acknowledge his existence. While doing research for this post, I found a documentary on Disney+ about Howard Ashman. It has a one minute long trailer on the Disney+ YouTube account and that’s it. There’s no other marketing for this documentary, no one posting about it, NOTHING. It came out in 2018. FOUR YEARS AND NO ONE KNOWS IT EXISTS. Disney has been erasing the existence of queer people in their history and continue to profit off of the work that queer people did to keep their company afloat. The Beauty and the Beast remake was the first Disney movie to make over a billion dollars and in doing so, they butchered the work of a dying gay man who didn’t even get to see the finished film he worked so hard on.
So, as you make art and gif posts about The Little Mermaid (2023) as more and more trailers and promotional material come out for it, remember Howard Ashman. Remember the man who gave many of us our childhoods, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul.
Rest in peace, Howard.
Here is a video the goes more in depth about Howard’s contributions to Disney and the history surrounding the importance of The Little Mermaid:

2019 was really THE year
Avengers endgame, Midsommar, Joker, Parasite, Knives out, Cats, Little Women, The Lighthouse, The Lion King live action, Us, Aladdin live action, Frozen 2, Lego movie 2, The Addams Family, Shazam, Detective Pikachu, Five Feet Apart , all came to theatres.
The Umbrella Academy, Euphoria, Good Omens, Why Women Kill, What We Do In The Shadows, Dickinson, Sex Education, The Mandalorian, The Boys, Pen 15 and Trinkets all premiered.
Then you got music which is still just as crazy cause you got Bad Guy, Truth Hurts, 7 Rings, Thank u next album, Sucker, Old Town Road, Love album, Señorita, Sweet But Psycho, Watermelon Sugar, K-12 and more
Pop culture too was obviously still crazy since you have the instagram egg, horrifying first sonic image, first image of a black hole, snapchats baby filter that still haunts, end of game of thrones, big bang theory ends, end of katy perry and taylor swift feud, ownership of spider-man, Greta Thunberg, storming area 51, Steven Universe and probably more i’m forgetting
I don’t know if we’ll ever get another year go as hard as 2019 unfortunately

So yeah, here's what I predict will happen next episode: Shindo will trick Arajin into releasing Senya from his body after revealing what Senya's true motivations are (after he tried everything to change the subject) much like how Jafar was able to steal the lamp from Aladdin. Shindo will hold Senya captive in the same bullet that shot into Arajin's head during the premiere. Matakara, completely possessed by Ichiya, will dispose of Ken and take over Minato Kai, then challenge Siguma's leader to incite a gang war. That will be enough to lure Arajin out (since he still only cares about Mahoro) so that we get their battle because everyone believes that Arajin has stopped a gang war before and he can do it again, and it's going to be a brutal one-sided fight that will cause the rest of the cast to turn on Arajin when they all discover that he's been using a genie for that power he displayed back there, not just Matakara. After all, their behavior throughout this series showed how both of them are so ill-suited to become genies because they are neither "strong" nor "pure" to fit that criteria.
Also, believe me. Shindo will clearly take advantage of the fight between Arajin and Matakara as they let out every single frustration they've had towards each other, and steal Ichiya for himself so he can be the top dog once more with both genie bullets in his possession, only for this to completely take over him when he tries to shoot both bullets into his body, turning him into a Honki monstrosity. It feels like everything's falling into place, especially after I know what Jafar did in Aladdin when he stole the lamp. Hell, he even did the whole disguise thing when he slips a paper into Arajin's pocket to meet him another time, revealing then how Senya only wants to control him, perhaps so that he can selfishly fight Ichiya again.
Sorry, I'm late replying to this! It's actually an interesting theory even if with the recent episode we saw how everything turned out. But you have analysed the situation pretty well and the characters' motivations. Well, except Shindo who only seems to want Ichiya defeated.
I'm curious to see after ep 10 what is going to happen. We know that Arajin and Matakara will fight at some point and through them Senya and Ichiya could fight, or Arajin might stop Matakara before it's too late. I mean, there are different paths the story could take, I'm really looking forward to it!

this is a smart prediction! yeah all of this seems fairly likely to me
it occured to me watching ep 9 that shindo is DEFINITELY going to get a role in the battle given how prominent he is even post ara asswhooping. it also occured to me that shindo is certainly going to at least try to take senya, but that jafar parallel totally makes sense for his character.
matakara taking over minato kai to force a match against ara would be a good setup for the 'darkest hour' of arajin's journey.
an extra evil and powerful double-majin shindo would be really fun to see, i really hope this happens. shindo is the perfect character to have suffer from his own hubris. he's at his best when he's doing his most jafar camp or suffering because of it
i wonder maybe when/if senya and ichiya occupy the same body, if they could reconcile whatever it is they went through. shindo would be their 'get along' shirt lmao. then they decide to beat up shindo together and everybody looks on deeply confused as to why he's writhing on the ground in pain
really good explanation, this makes me hope that the battle plays out just like this!

That’s a bit of a long read but i should answer honestly about how I feel about this prediction:
I really doubt that a Ichiya-possessed Matakara would go after Minato Kai and then quickly take over it because I’m pretty sure it’s Arajin that he’s specifically targeting. Not Minato Kai nor Kenichiro for that matter. (Though I’m not against Zabu, Komao and some members of Minato Kai being sus of Matakara’s mysterious return after being missing for a week and he started acting like a zombie)
As for removing the bullets in both Arajin and Matakara, I’m not to sure how Akutaro would do it given that he lost access to Ichiya’s power and that he would’ve been brutalized out of self defense via Senya and Ichiya for attempting to do so. Not to mention, if doing so can potentially kill both Arajin and Matakara! (Maybe it wouldn’t but I’m sadly sure there would be dire consequences such as shortened lifespan for instance)
You’ve given me a lot of thoughts to think about how next episode would go anon. So thank you for that.

What songs does bruce listen to?
Ooo, I feel like Bruce enjoys piano covers of his vocalised songs. He'll get overwhelmed if he's doing multiple tasks at once (which, as we all know, it goes againts his nature if he doesn't) and tries to listen to actual lyrics.
Once he adopts Dick, I have a slight feeling his music folder thickens with Disney songs. Just a small hunch, really.
Since Bruce doesn't go to the movies anymore, he misses premieres, but Alfred takes that sugar rush on legs instead. And Dick of course has to perform the entire soundtrack of the new Aladdin remake over their Batcomputer's audio system. Why else do you have it, Bruce?!

My transcript of Arjen Lubach's interview with Marwan Kenzari. DO NOT REUPLOAD I tried my best - it was a fun interview, and they were both being little shits lmao, there was a great really joke-y vibe.
AL: "My guest is a Haagse (indicating he's from Den Haag) Hollywood star. Yesterday evening he was attending the premiere of Black Adam, and today he's at the desk of White Arjen, also very cool. He shines next to the greatest stars in the coolest movies." [cut to montage of TOG, Instinct, MOTO, Aladdin] AL: "We saw him in The Old Guard, Instinct, Murder on the Orient Express, Aladdin, and unfortunately we couldn't afford to pay for more fragments. Give it up for Marwan Kenzari!" TS 00.52
AL: "What nice of you to be here!" MK: "Yes, thank you for allowing me to be here." AL: "Sure! How are you?" MK: "I'm good!" AL: "Great. Now that we have that out of the way. You flew in straight from London, I believe, this afternoon, right? Yesterday the premiere of BA. How was the premiere?" MK: "Eh, big! and it's always at Leicester Square and and that's ehm, yeah, a lot of fans (in attendence.) The subject of this movie has a big loyal fanbase in itself." AL: "Because it's DC comics, right?" MK: "Yes, exactly" AL: "And that's one of those super-hero worlds." MK: "Yes, so it was really exciting, everyone was there, it was gezellig (cozy/he had a good time with the cast), eh, the showing of the movie went well, so it was - I was happy/glad I got to go and attend." AL: "How nice! We have a picture of the premiere, and it doesn't match with how chill you are right now. Because, I see you standing there with - who do we see - the Rock, right? Dwayne Johnson, Pierce Brosnan..." MK: "Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo…" AL: "This was from last night! and now you're here in our funky small VPRO studio." MK: "Yes, exactly that." AL: "So, something about Black adam. We also have a short fragment of the trailer.. (MK: yes), ehm, shall we just watch it? And then after I have a question for you about it." MK: "That's okay." AL: "Let's watch it."
[BA trailer plays]
TS 2:23
AL: "Yes, so, you have a big role in this movie, and yet you're nowhere to be seen in this trailer. Are you sure you made it into the final cut of the movie?" MK: "You never know! No, no, I never said I had a big role." AL: "Yeah, okay." MK: "but it's ehm," AL: " But you were on the red carpet with 5 famous - so that was my assumption..." MK: "Yes, well, they allowed me to participate and I'm really happy they did but they - the way they shape the trailer and how they cut it, that in itself is a world of its own - I don't want to talk it right for them, but they have their reasons to why they cut me out in places where they could've left me in, and that's uh, it's a spoiler sensitive role, let's put it that way." AL: "Ah, so that's it. Okay, later we're having an after-party so we can speculate about this there."
TS 3:12
AL: "What can you tell me about the film, about it's contents? What's the story?" MK: "Well, like you said, it's DC comics so it's the world of a couple of really famous hero's like Wonder woman, Batman, Superman, and it's a complex story - have you got time?" AL: "Eh, not really no but make an effort." MK: "Well the story takes place in a fictive city, ehm, eh, in a fictive country I should say, we follow a young lady, a rebel against the current regime, and the government is feverishly digging for an important, eh, kind of product which is called Eternium and," AL: "This is going to be really long isnt it?" MK: "Yeah, well I'll try to summarize it in two sentences then Dwayne Johnson plays Black Adam who's actually a slave from five thousand years ago who gets brought back to life present day," AL: "wow" Mk, undisturbed: "BY THE SEARCH FOR THIS CROWN made of eternium… yes." MK: "And then I've actually left out so much of the story." AL: "Yes, I hope about two hours of movie you've left out."
TS 4:43
AL: "You've also done a lot of Dutch movies, Wolf and De Oost and these kinds of projects. Have you noticed any big differences between those and American movie sets? So not so much working with actors, but differences in logistics and these kind of things?" MK: "At it's core, no not really, because making film is a beautiful process of just searching. The morning you show up on set to do scenes, those scenes don't exist yet - maybe only on paper. So the process is maybe the same, but there's different budgets and you're working with people with forty years of experience, and, everything can be done/nothing is impossible, and the construction - it's like using a different muscle to come to these scenes (in shaping them), but in the end it's just a search for the story you're trying to tell." AL: "Did we lose you forever to Hollywood or are you coming back to the Netherlands to do stuff here as well?" MK: "I don't - I don't get to make these calls." AL: "No no you have to make a decision right now!" MK: "No, no what I'm trying to say is that I don't know! I am ALLOWED to play in these films (as in he's lucky to being cast), and I'm grateful that I am allowed, and if it's a Dutch movie I am just as happy." AL: "You're such a humble man." MK: "oh, that's all fake." AL: "I immediately believe that, and a great actor apparently."
TS 5:51
AL: "Can you say anything about upcoming projects?" MK: "Yes, so we just shot the sequel to the Old Guard, a movie for Netflix with Charlize Theron in the main lead, and, among others, Matthias Schoenaerts, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and this time in part 2 Una Therman and Henry Golding, so a huge, amazing, diverse cast of hardworking actors which results in all kinds of bruises and injuries and a dislocated shoulder and a thumb -" AL: "What? Because they're so disciplined that when you make a mistake they beat you into the floor or? How did these wounds get to be in this story? It's because they take this role so seriously they forget the physical objects or something? Like... gravity?" MK: "Yeah no, it's just because you're shooting 80 days of 12hour shoots and sometimes you bump your knee." AL: "And then you just go through it." MK: "Yeah." AL: "Yeah wow okay, awesome."
AL: "Are you ever standing still with the fact that you get to do all these cool stuff like, wondering what you're doing there or are you taking it a bit for granted? (laughs) I'm filling in for you (apologetic)" MK: "No no, I would lie if I said it wasn't special, but I also got to meet Remco Campert (a famous Dutch poet) in the Vondelpark, which is probably my highest point of being starstruck." AL: That's also nice. Fuck you Charlize Theron. eh. No, I was kidding" (fuck you as in marwan not being starstruck for her lmao) MK: "He was making a joke!" AL "I'm a huge fan please come to the show." AL: "yeah, I'm really excited about the film, black adam, I haven't seen it yet. I wasn't allowed to see it yet you guys were really stern on that so I am really curious, I'm definitely going to check it out. Good luck for all your future projects. Thank you, Marwan Kenzari!"

Winx Musical Casting - The Specialists and Stella Edit
This is a part 2 of this post:
ITS TIME FOR THE BOIS LETS GO
First up, here's a slight edit for the Stella casting. I had Stephanie Styles as Stella. Recently, I had an idea of who would fit better.
Bonnie Miligan.
oh im sorry its TONY AWARD WINNER BONNIE MILLIGAN
Tumblr media
This. woman. is. a. POWERHOUSE? Not only does she have AMAZING VOCALS, but shes an amazing actress with spectacular comedic timing and is just an amazing performer. Her credits include Pamela in the Original Broadway Cast of Head Over Heels, and Debra in the Tony Award Winning Musical, Kimberly Akimbo. Pamela already gives Stella energy so I think she would steal the show as our favorite ray of chaotic sunshine.
Examples:
youtube
youtube
these 2 songs ARE JUST STELLA OMG
Now onto the boys...
Sky: James Tolbert
Tumblr media
This man is OOZING with charisma. He's mostly known for working with team Starkid as a choreographer for A Very Potter Sequel, Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier, The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, Black Friday, and VHS Christmas Carol Live. His onstage credits include Snigglotts,/Vice President Bob Morris/Xander Lee/Ensemble in Black Friday, Blinky/Snigglotts/Ensemble in Nightmare Time, and The Ghost of Christmas Present in A VHS Christmas Carol Live. I think he could add way more charisma and character to the Wonder bread man that is Prince Sky of Eraklyon.
youtube
youtube
Brandon: Milo Manheim
Tumblr media
Now, I don't know if Milo has done any theatre BUT his credits do have him all the musical theatre skills (singing, dancing, acting, etc). He's mostly known for playing Zed Necrodopolis in the DCOM musical trilogy, Zombies. He also placed 2nd on Dancing With the Stars in 2018. From the videos I've seen of him, he seems to have the right kind of vibes for our favorite himbo squire.
youtube
Helia: Dean John-Wilson
Tumblr media
His credits include the title role in Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre in the West End, Lun Tha in the West End revival of The King and I, and, most recently, L in the English Premiere of Death Note the Musical in London. His voice is amazing and he really gets into his character's heads. The most recent example being L.
youtube
Timmy: Matt Doyle
Tumblr media
This man has played a vast amount of roles. His credits include Hanschen in Spring Awakening, Elder Price in the Book of Mormon, and Seymour in the Off-Broadway production of Company. But, he's mostly well known for playing Jaimie in the Tony winning revival of Company, WHICH HE WON A TONY FOR! I think he could definitely bring the nerdy and helpful energy to bring Timmy to life on stage.

Riven: Gus Halper

What really sold me on him was his credit that that he's most well known for playing, Mischa Bachinsky in Ride the Cyclone. I feel like the character's two songs are both sides to Riven. He could bring the misunderstood bad boy energy while also getting vulnerable and emotional at moments.

Nabu: Michal Maliakel
Tumblr media
Currently, he's playing the lead role in Aladdin on Broadway. In the past, his credits include Cover Raoul in the International Tour of the Phantom of the Opera, George Nowack in She Loves Me, and Artie Green in the Kennedy Center production of Sunset Boulevard. I personally saw him as Aladdin and he was amazing. I feel like there are some similarities between the two characters so, I think he could bring the energy of the specialist that deserved better, Nabu.
