can you PLEASE do another jason todd x reader thing? mayb a short ficc?
honestly i loved doing one yesterday, and i've no problem with another today. ig today is good for taking requests overall!!!
summary: y/n is a bookkeeper and Jason is a regular customer (but only on the y/n's work days).
note: again, fluff. I am aware of Jason's relationships with women in the comics, and I want to strike a fair compromise (since I really do write him as demisexual in most AUs).
The bell attached to the entrance door to Gomez Books rang, signaling y/n to perk up from her seat behind the register.
"Good morning, welcome to — oh, hello, Mr. Todd!" she smiled brightly once she identified the tall figure near the register. "How was Memphis?"
Jason nodded. "Quite good, actually. A tad too realistic, but sometimes we all need that, right?" he chuckled, to which y/n laughed sympathetically. "But I was wondering if you recommend something new for me? If that isn't too much, of course."
He reached around and rubbed the back of his neck nervously, exposing some of his bicep from the t-shirt he wore. Y/n watched as the muscles tensed, distracted from the conversation for a moment before clearing her throat. "Yes, certainly! It is my job, after all!" she rose from her seat and brushed off her trousers. "Would you please follow me?"
Jason obliged, and followed behind y/n as she guided them through aisles of shelves and stacks of books. Occasionally, his eyes would wander to her hips, wondering how soft she would feel, or if she would beam as brightly at him as she would at her books.
"And here we are!" she chimed, handing Jason a book titled Stardust. "Since you made the comment about realism, I thought perhaps this would spark some interest."
Jason thumbed through the pages, sharing mild interest. "It's about a boy's travel to manhood, and the real meaning of love and self-worth." Y/n slipped her hands in the back pockets of her trousders nonchalantly. "And I think your girlfriend would like it, too. Or boyfriend!" she hesitated, laughing nervously.
Oh my god she's adorable he thought to himself, eyes beaming at her. "I don't have either of those." he smirked. "Is it like, heavy on the romance?"
Y/n sighed. "Yes, it is. It's not about some American values, if that's what you're worried about. But it does contain some symbolism that I personally found interesting."
Jason's head cocked to the side as she spoke, in awe by her devotion. I'm in love with a damn bookkeeper. "That sounds decent. Plus it's relatively short, so I may finish it before the end of my shift." he spoke solemnly as they walked together back to the register.
"If you want," y/n started, "I can lend you my personal copy, and you can return it whenever you're finished." she sat back down in her seat, flipping through her knapsack. "Here." she removed another copy from her bag, this one showing obvious signs of love. "Sorry for the little water stains and whatnot."
Again, Jason smiled brightly at her. "And you'll be around by like 5 this evening so I can bring it back?"
Y/n shook her head. "I get off in a couple of hours at 3." She tried to suppress a smile, as she knew exactly what he was thinking.
That's because he only frequents the shop when y/n's around, Mr. Gomez divulged a little too eagerly.
Who's that guy? Clarice asked y/n, pointing at Jason, I've never seen him around.
"Oh." his shoulders slumped as his grip of the book tightened. "W-would I be able to keep it until your next shift? That way I can return it to you directly?"
It was the first time y/n saw Jay so nervous. "How about this:" she began, rising from her seat and reaching over to slip a note in the book, "you can return the book back to me tonight and we can discuss it over dinner."
"Y/n." she finished. "And, uh, wear something red, if you will." she checked him out and flashed him a titillating look.
Heat rose to Jason's cheeks as he nodded. He opened the book to read the note, which read Call or text me, Romeo xoxo with a phone number scribbled at the bottom. "I think I'd like that..."
Jason grinned from ear to ear, beginning the first chapter of Stardust after he sang, "I'll pick you up then, y/n."

Realistically, what note do you think or hope the books will end in regard to Arya and Gendry? I don’t expect fanfic wish fulfillment but Grrm seems to have a soft spot for them so maybe a vague romantic suggestion that leaves their future open to interpretation? Which I realize is not much different to where we’re already at lol but I just can’t imagine how their relationship would develop.
when i consider what arya/gendry will look like in the end, or just the future in general, i think about whats already in the text. the elements of romance and even sexuality within their interactions are more than a lil suggestive. ie: the two of them rolling around together is not subtle lol. the phrase "between his legs" is used twice in that paragraph. grrm wrote an exclusive to a/g love song and had the singer wink as he sang it. he introduced not one, but 2 characters mostly just to fan the flames here. gendry explicitly threatens to have sex with a girl to try to make arya jealous and he visibly dislikes a perceived rival for her attention. ect! this isn't some obscure aspect of the story. its a legitimate side plot.
so i wouldn't even describe their existing canon interactions as "vague" therefore i don't assume their future ones, endgame included, would be left entirely up to interpretation either. are they going to get married on page? and consummate the union? no. but i do expect their future interactions to continue to be obviously romantic in nature. esp now that arya is older (and gendry seems to be younger)
with all that in mind here are my realistic thoughts:
when arya returns from braavos she will rekindle her friendship with gendry and realize she's attracted to him. gendry, having endured the loss of arya, will be willing to commit to her regardless of the issues that forced them apart previously. its all going to be pg-13 and tame by asoiaf standards but they will be crushing and it's not going to be a secret. not to the readers nor anyone who happens to witness the two of them together.
as i see it theres two potential outcomes: the class difference is still insurmountable and they remain apart or they end up together in some capacity. this will probably be a controversial claim, but a/g have less barriers to being together long term than any other ship imo. consistently, throughout their relationship, gendry being "too bloody lowborn" for arya is THE issue. its the source of all the conflict between them and its the thing keeping them apart. other than that? they clearly like and admire each other. arya trusts gendry, values his perspective, and confides in him things she tells no other character. she wanted him to come home with her, to be a part of her pack.
and i want to emphasis that arya values gendry's counsel specifically because thats one aspect of their dynamic that feels very relevant within the context of their potential as a grown up couple. they make a good team and work well together. they've already endured the bleakest possible scenarios by working together. gendry is presented as a really fitting partner for arya which i think is intentional tbh.
but ultimately, can the class difference be overcome? i think it can. and not only that but i think arya and gendry ending up together can be reflective of the changes we're going to see across the board with westeros' political system. they're not going to abolish the monarchy, but there will be major changes with how the kingdom is run.
the end i envision for them is fairly understated despite all my arguing that their relationship isnt all that subtle. arya asking gendry to come home with her to winterfell (again) would be enough, but thats not vague to me either. the meaning will be clear.
all that being said HEAs are not going to plentiful in asoiaf. grrm likes "we'll always have paris" type romances where two people meet and change each other, but go their separate ways. it could be that is what happens with arya and gendry. im realistic, if not bordering on pessimistic, so i want to embrace that possibility! but everything on paper is telling me they're supposed to end up together. not least of all bc in order for this romantic build up to actually come to full fruition they have to be grown which won't be until post series.
i try to keep my expectations low too but is it wish fulfillment to expect substantial pay off? idk.......grrm has been teasing love, sex and even marriage with arya and gendry for like the entire series actually. since that "arya has the hands of a blacksmith" comment in the first paragraph of her first chapter. he better do something!!!

I kinda see yr point re booktok but at the same time like........how different is it from pulp fiction that's been around for decades? there's the performance of reading element now (tho this probably existed in diff forms pre socmed) but I ultimately see it as like, not too different from the ppl who read every new James Patterson book or exclusively read Amish romance novels, like cheap, quickly produced fluffy reading material is by no means the new phenomenon here.
there was nothing wrong with pulp fiction by itself, you literally said it's always existed. the problem occurs when it becomes a part of the mainstream and theres a drastic drop in literature other than these kind of cheap novels. when you think of books written in the early 1800s, minds would immediately go to jane austen or the brontë sisters. likewise with the early half of 1900s makes you think of the great gatsby and to kill a mockingbird and if i asked you to name 3 books from 2005-2012 then you could do that very easily, with percy jackson and the hunger games. alongside these books, which would be read for generations over generations and go down as a cult classic, these colleen hoover/emily henry books can't hold a candle to the iconic literature of an era. sure, james patterson make a lot of these cheap fictions but how many people considering themselves "readers" actually read exclusively their books?
the current generation has devalued reading so much with the introduction of tiktok and instagram. since 2019 or so, there are so many books being put out of the exact fanfic-y nature that it destroys literature to a commodity and aesthetic to profit off of. none of these books actually have what it takes to be classified as literature. borrowing some stuff from @espressopdf 's reblog, when the consumption of books becomes so fast paced and meaningless at such a rapid rate with no intentions of slowing down, it is a bad thing. when these books are introduced as mainstream, they leave a lasting impression of literature of the 2020s. when future generations look back to these books and the craze they stirred up, they would try to imitate them and then every single book will be as senseless and bland as these current ones are on the pathway of being. it's not something that's harmless entirely, and the more people understand that is the better but lets be real here the people who read these kind of books exclusively are not going to listen to a word of what we have to say.

HEY HOMIE aight i wanna read ur dipplinshipping fanfics but i cant tell which of them comes first and i worry that theres a chronological order there that i might accidentily spoil myself with wEHHH can u please tell me which fic to read first and which ones after?? thank you so much!
Awww I am so touched that you want to give them a try!! :)
So all of them are pretty much stand alone and you can read whatever you'd like! The only exception is the Sweet & Sour Dipplins "What If" Oneshot Series, which is a spinoff of Sweet & Sour Dipplins.
The "What If" Series is essentially where I take reader suggestions on canon event(s) in the story, and write a non-canon, stand-alone oneshot of how the story would develop if something went in the direction of their prompt instead. The exception to the rule is Drayton's POV (and honestly, any continuation of it or other character POVs) since it's a fun opportunity to gather more information that we wouldn't get from the limited POVs of Kieran & Juliana (which the main story follows exclusively). Each "What If" is labelled in the chapter title about which chapter rewrites I'm doing so readers can know ahead of time about potential spoilers.
It's also been a hot minute since I've updated that fic series in particular but I am working to get the next chapter out soon after I get some other things on my plate done. :)

Okay—you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to..! But I’m actually SO curious on your essay thoughts of q!Bad in 4halo fics. Because (I think) it’s kind of rare that q!Bad is depicted accurately in.. most qsmp ship fics. And I feel like q!Bad always becomes.. obsessed with romance with q!Forever in many 4halo fics?? Or super open + emotionally stable?? I don’t know how to explain it, but that’s why I’m curious of your thoughts (because I’ve read your fics and 100% trust your characterizations, especially of BBH cubitos <3)
hihi always down to ramble. and i agree, a lot of bad's flaws are smoothed over in 4halo fics, which makes him incredibly ooc. also, i dont think that these mischaracterizations are necessarily bad, i understand that in fluff fics (or angst fics, which im guilty of) sometimes theres no room in tone to fully capture all of q!bad's complexities. but that doesn't mean i cant have some gripes!
i dont think this is exclusive to 4halo, but 4halo is also bad's current biggest ship, so a lot of it just happens to fall on it. but i really hate how fanon!bad gets stripped down to a mere love interest who is just...very perfect in how he interacts with romance. he wants to go on cute dates, he confesses in a very sweet way. he is kind and nice and a little insecure, and is just so boring. its very much reminiscent of old skephalo fics, where bad is seen as "innocent" and then any other interesting trait of his gets stripped away. i also end up feeling im reading about a highschooler, when q!bad is 11k+ and cc!bad (obviously influential of his character) is in his late 20s.
again, i understand why people write 4halo on cute dates and first kisses. thats what fanfic is for! but i cant help but see the entirety of the ao3 page full of these very...allo-typical romance plots and think "...he would not fucking say that." q!bad is messy as fuck! if you don't interpret him as arospec, then hes at the very least repressed, and not in a cute YA romance way. a 1k fic of pining that ends in a nice love confession just doesnt convince me im sorry!
and then there's the blue diamond obstacle that gets in the way of 4halo monogamy....skeppy. again, i get why most 4halo shippers arent going to mention him, cause theyre just not into anything skephalo. i cant blame them for that. but im a master nitpicker, so ill still nitpick cause this is my blog. bad brushing over skeppy is ooc. bad acting as if skeppy is in the past is ooc. bad pursuing any form of relationship without including skeppy is ooc. bad choosing any other person but skeppy to be his #1 is ooc. and yeah it sucks for shipping if you dislike q!skephalo, but thats how it is and its not changing. and also any fics that push bad to "move on" from skeppy is just ??? not only is that his soulmate across lifetimes, but skeppy isnt dead? hes just not on the island? help??? bad has two hands, but one hand will always hold skeppy's and he's made that abundantly clear many times.
anyways im also not immune to q!bad butchering in 4halo fics! ill admit that, in writing the hanahaki au, i couldn't really find time to fit a lot of q!bad's humor into it, and he ended up more openly angsty and sad and vulnerable then he really is, or would ever be. so i totally get it, and im fine if other qbad viewers despise how he's written in it. however i will stand by the fact that q4halo would never pursue a traditional relationship together, and i chose the ending to be ambiguous because thats how i believe their relationship (and feelings) are: ambiguous. that's why, to me, 4halo is so good. i don't want to read about them confessing their feelings. i want to read about how their relationship is an undefined, confusing mess that will never be defined, and im just so surprised that there aren't more fics like that out there.

The way people seem to paint reading something unsavory is a form of harm is kind of interesting like if you read something you don't like or find unsavory you can stop reading it but they treat it almost like the author is maliciously forcing them to.
Having a negative reaction to a piece of media is not a form of harm and feels insulting, almost self centered even to insinuate theres longterm harm in it. Like not everyone is going to spoon feed you or hold your hand, sometimes you have to be responsible for your own triggers. Life isn't always going to be tailored for your comfort, you gotta do that shit yourself. All the arguments I've seen talking about there being moral weight in intangible things always turns into a trauma dumping pity party and it's just so telling that they're only thinking of themselves and their own experiences exclusively.
Yeah, people's ideas around reading is super weird. I almost said "it's gotten weird recently" but no, there were women attempting to ban "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" when it first came out because it talked about menstruation and masturbation in a format that was appropriate for teenaged girls.
Don't Like, Don't Read should be stapled to the insides of people's eyeballs. Fanfic is like, the safest possible form of media to interact with specifically because fanfic authors are so careful about tagging and labeling fic.
You know what didn't have trigger warnings on it? The book Interview With A Vampire. You know what that book (and the others in the series) contained? Shit a lot of antis would lose their minds about.
Lestat has interesting emotions about his own mom, I'm just sayin'.

How do you listen to fanfic tho is there an app that reads it? Like that google voice? I tried finding smth like this and failed
uhh two ways.
text to speech plugin. ive been using one for years, theres a good chance i use it to read a long post to me if i can't get through it on my own, though its a bit finicky. you can find a text to speech plugin for firefox easily enough, there's probably multiple i think? idk.
firefox also has this little thing called "reader view" which when pressed will take you to a text to speech version of the page you're on.
Tumblr media
/\ this is what the little toggle reader view button looks like. it lives on the right side of the address bar.
Tumblr media
this is an example of a page that's been turned into reader view mode. very useful!
i almost exclusively use these methods to read fanfic now, except when formatting & artistic choices by the author make it too difficult/irritating to use

honestly don't know if it's just me or if im going insane or something but sometimes i feel like a lot of steddie fanfic is people using steve as a reader insert for that weird suave sexy dominating fanon version of eddie to get with like. theres just something about the amount of uwu helpless babygirl steve fic where ppl completely ignore like. Most of steves character and his experiences just bc they think it'd be hot if he got wrecked or something that's truly bizarre and kind of concerning to me
you’re so right!! it really disturbs me how often steve is treated as this infantilized object devoid of any aspects of his real personality. it’s not exclusive to one ship either. i’ve seen it in steddie content, stancy content, stonathan content, and i don’t read h*rringrove for obvious reasons but i scroll past those fics on ao3 when i don’t feel like using filters and the summaries imply that it’s a rampant trend there too. i know everyone makes jokes about steve being pretty and dumb but it genuinely disturbs me how much nsfw content of him capitalizes on that and exaggerates it to the degree that it feels like the authors and readers want to make steve as clueless and helpless as possible because they think that’s….sexy? i guess? not to read too into things but the scene in s3 where steve is tied up and having his hair stroked and his face touched without his consent while he is visibly repulsed by it has always been extremely uncomfortable for me to watch because it just feels very. malicious in intent beyond the cartoony villains that the russians had been up until that point? and sometimes i feel like nsfw fics on here and on ao3 almost replicate that energy with scenarios where steve is smoking with eddie and he’s written as this helpless lightweight who needs to be taught the ways of the world and dominated by his sex god boyfriend and it’s just…gross! it’s gross to me!! not to mention it mischaracterizes eddie as well and feels like shoving them both into these dom/sub roles that they do not fit in at all, and that’s where the argument that people are fetishizing mlm relationships through steddie becomes a valid criticism to make

Racist Experiences in the Marauders Fandom
These anonymous submissions come from a survey I published several weeks ago where I asked for fans in the Marauders fandom to share their experiences with me. I was overwhelmed with the results, and this is, in their own words, some of the submissions I was sent.
There has been lost of push back against fans using POC fan casts for various characters
weird reactions to desi james or east asian sirius!!
I have seen people get upset when characters are fancast as non-white actors (like dev Patel for James)
Clash of opinions about fanon Hermione being black
I have seen lots of racism towards people's newer fancasts, as all the OGs (ben barnes, andrew garfield, aaron taylor-johnson, etc.) are white and some people are trying to change that!
I saw a fanart one time, where james had a darker skin (he was latino) and someone commented that it doesn't suit him
I draw Sirius black as Asian and I’ve gotten quite a few racist comments about this and I’ve seen a lot of racism about desi James. Also when BIPOC people cosplay characters that people think are “white”
People tend to cast characters as white, and sometimes I see people getting mad someone is fancasting a non-canonically black character as black or as a person of colour (I've seen some good black Remus, non-white Lily, non-white Peter fancasts, and yet, there is still peope being sooo mad about it like??). Sadly, I think a lot of people can tell about the fact that fancasts are often discussed and hated for no reason when they're not white or whatever, when it's basically just a fancast, that goes against the "canon" a bigot (JKR) made up.
the first that’s coming to mind is people fighting against the interpretation/portrayal of characters as poc (most often james bs i think he’s most popularly hced as desi but also others) either that or just straight up gatekeeping
Only the general feeling that the white characters are more interesting and loved than any of the characters of color. Racebending seems token, like nobody wants to be exclusionary but also don't have the comfort or confidence to make that diversity ring true in terms of cultural resonance. By cultural resonance I don't only mean make them ethnic but to portray and discuss or casually mention the postcolonial personhood or third culture kid experience as applies.
A comment on my fic about making it a “racial jungle”, saying that it wasn’t accurate for the time period even though representation of races otherwise had no significance in the fic
theres is a lot people that will fight tooth and nail for exclusively white maruaders (in terms of fancasts) and they slander other people in the fandom for using more diverse fancasts such as desi james or black evan
I've seen it in passing, especially towards POC writers/people who HC characters who were not diverse in canon.
People not wanting desi Potters in art or otherwise
One Harry Potter fan got mad at me for drawing James (and Harry) dark skinned
GOD THE FRIKIN FANCASTS. They really don't matter that much and everyone makes it such a big deal. To me at least- representation only really matters if its real. If there's fat Peter, darkskin Dorcas, desi James, or Japanese Sirius/Regulus in a fanfic, that is the representation of that. It doesn't need to be reflected in a fancast used in an edit. Personal opinion but annoying as fuck I just wish everyone would enjoy the fact that someone spent time pouring over numerous tiny clips from many different TV shows and movies just for fun, and other people getting mad that they didn't use a person that literally doesn't exist angers me to no end.
mostly just a complete ignorance of POC identities. sometimes poc characters are ignored in favour of white characters. but also, even when POC are centered, i often see like a lot of fetishization and stereotyping and it's just... not good...
there’s a lot of jewish people in the fandom that have pointed out antisemitism within the fandom a few times. i am not jewish, and i cannot speak on the issue, but that’s something i’ve heard a lot. i’ve also seen the whitewashing of fancasts for characters like mary and dorcas who are widely accepted to be women of color, so that feels weird to me, but i think? that’s everything i’ve noticed or heard.
i've seen racism thrown to black creators, poc fancasts, and at myself for being arab and head-cannoning the black brother as arab.
There was a black dude cosplaying remus and their were people saying remus wasnt a N-word but it was a white person saying it
I have seen some fans respond in a racist way to Black fans who have called out the racism in the way in which Black characters are written and portrayed in the fandom.

dont say sorry we love the paragraphs!! tbh i cant stand a lot of md fanfics because of how they characterize uzi in particular, they just do not do her depth justice. and you're so right about the narration too. its so subtle but a lot of great fics go above and beyond to take narration from just describing the world to actually representing a characters perspective- literally and figuratively. hostile takeover is a masterclass in it tbh. its actually inspired me to try and get into writing for md because you need to be the content you want to see in the world ig- im starting with rp rn though because i find that to be the easiest way to get into a characters head, ya know? also your dollxn piece made me physically ill (positive). im shipping them now but exclusively in the way your fanart is framing it (also great song choice listening to it and staring at the art really sent me) - juzi anon
I think a good narration is like, an unspoken art when it comes to writing. I LOVE fics that make a point to have the characters thoughts be a part of the narration; It speaks volumes to how that person write the character themself and can even make for some really impactful dialog thats not even spoken. I think the biggest strength of Hostile Takeover (from the chapters I've read!) is its ability to make a character's narration show the subtle, unseen things about the characters themselves. (Which is why I love J's chapters so much, J puts up such a large persona that being able to read the thoughts she actually has is so!!! arugh!!!!!)
Also: I'm glad to see you taking an inspiration for writing, I've honestly thought many a time to force myself into writing fics just because theres so many ideas I have that I do not have the time or skill to illustrate lol. I actually started posting artwork because I wanted to see more fanart for my own rarepair!!! And I can understand the whole roleplaying thing (I haven't roleplayed canon characters since my.. *shudders* MMO days /j) I grew up on roleplaying and still do on occasion! (OCs I mean haha) I think its a great stepping stone to writing full blown chapters and stuff, all about practice or whatever!!
oh and: I'm glad you liked that piece lmao. N x Doll is one of those ships I thought about for 2 seconds and went "wait no I get it.". I've honestly thought about making more art of it just because its left such a impact on my skull. (ITs... the only enemies to lovers you could HAVE with N canonically w/o messing w/ his character and i am OBSESSED)
