Carcross Desert, YT (No. 2)

Carcross Desert is significantly drier than the surrounding region, receiving less than 50 cm (20 in) of precipitation per year. This is due in part to a rain shadow effect caused by surrounding mountains. As a result, several rare species of plant life have taken hold in the comparatively arid conditions. Carex sabulosa, the Baikal sedge, is only known to exist in four other sites in North America, mainly existing in Asia. Yukon lupine, also unusual for the surroundings, "grows like a weed." While the vegetation in the area currently locks much of the dune system in place, a large event such as a forest fire could easily clear out the vegetation and return the dunes to an active state.

Deercember Day Six: Mountain Reindeer | Baskets and Bouquets

The mountain reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus)—also called the Norwegian reindeer, northern reindeer, common reindeer, or mountain caribou—is a medium to large subspecies of the reindeer who is native to the western Scandinavian Peninsula, particularly Norway. Reindeer/caribou on the whole have what is called a "circumpolar distribution", which is a range that occurs over a wide span of longitudes but only a narrow band of latitudes, and they call the Arctic, subarctic, tundra, boreal, and mountainous regions of Northern Europe, Siberia, and North America home. Reindeer hooves are somewhat soft during warmer months, but in the Winter, their hooves become hard and sharp for breaking through the ice to forage vegetation, particularly the aptly-named reindeer lichen (Cladonia rangiferina). Reindeer eyes also adapt to the different light levels across the changing of the seasons by changing colour; their tapetum—the part of the eye behind the iris—changes from gold in the Summer to purple-blue in the Winter. This change is not directly visible externally, but allows the animal to see optimally across the dramatic day and night lengths of the polar region. Reindeer are the only successfully semi-domesticated deer on a large scale in the world, and both wild and domestic reindeer have been an important source of food, clothing, and shelter for Arctic people throughout history and are still herded and hunted today. For centuries, the Taino-Arawakan people and the Carib Indians lived on the island of Ayiti (“land of high mountains”) in the tranquil blue waters of the Caribbean. All of that changed when Christopher Columbus arrived on 4 December 1492, charging in alongside the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. The Conquistadors brought colonisation, slavery, and disease to the once idyllic land, wiping out the indigenous communities and repopulating the island with people stolen from Africa.

i know what dropout is. i assume youre referring to my tags on the video post with brennan lee mulligan in it. im not totally sure how i gave the impression that i was THAT confused about the name of the streaming service (tho i do know i was extremely vague) but i was talking about the moose are the last north american megafauna factoid. its a factoid i dislike bc in order for it to be true, it has to be operating under a lot of parameters for how its defining last north american megafauna that arent being shared. then the people i see repeating it dont know those parameters, which is then confusing because i cant tell if theyre repeating a factoid they dont have context for, if theyre straight up wrong, or if its a purposefully wrong in-joke like sharks being smooth in both directions

This female caribou was the first in 2022 to be captured and relocated to a maternity pen high in the Rocky Mountains in British Columbia. The large pen, nestled in forest, gives pregnant mothers a protected space to give birth and rear their newborns. Once strong enough, mom and babies are released back to the wild.
