Got into a massive paint making fixation that uh culminated in us making casein, lime (slaked lime), tempera (why tempera, idk I had egg yolks left over ) paint in our kitchen and then using understanding of vague chemistry to see if we can make a paint mix of baking soda and gum Arabic /pigment as way to paint onto lime paint and then react in different materials into the paint itself as they both dry.
Like basic brain idea is that due to it being majority calcium hydroxide, the paint would in theory be able to react with baking soda to make calcium Carbonate, which is a common extender in many paints.
So we made bunch of swatches with the most hastily written down marking of what each one is.
Then we got real bored and then decided to throw acetic acid into the whole mix.
So we first made few swatches with our base lime casein paint then applied wet mixture of baking soda paint to one swatch. Another one we simply wiped briefiy with Vinegar
Then we took the master paint mix and dumped the rest of vinegar in it then used that to make another paint mix and use that to make a final swatch, since at this point I was pretty much done and wouldn't hurt to see what paint mix where we reacted chunk of the chemicals out.
Also like please always safely react, neutralize and dispose properly of paints of any kinds. And like it should go without saying, do use gloves and proper safety when working with lime based paints.
This was like bored weekend project.
Oh also we painted a massive block of wood with this same paint as well. We'll see how all of this turns out

Man I just love dressing crazy. Star-shaped eyeliner, jacket covered in bottle caps with smiley faces, bright pink glasses, piercings in my face. I thrive in the weird looks from strangers. I love being that person little kids think is a fairy and remember for years. I love giggling at myself while I make faces in the mirror.
To me, this is what it is to be punk. To make weird, messy art. To sing your crooked voice as loud as you can. To be the most beautiful ugly. To be that creature 8 year old you wrote stories about in their school notebooks. To be the greatest you you can be.
There is nobody on this Earth who can do you like you. So why not go out and be the best you the world's ever seen?

Time to explain more of our rambling thoughts of making our own paints.
Lime wash in of itself is a paint that is made with slaked lime which will react with co2 in the air as it dries and cures when applied which then result in calcium Carbonate.
Slaked lime when reacted with baking soda will also produce calcium Carbonate so this is a curious idea to see if this can be a way to quicken curing time or possibly create novel color effects.
We then used acetic acid to see if there's possibility of the sodium hydroxide produced by baking soda and lime reaction during wet curingj to produce sodium acetate which is used to water seal. But who knows, this is all napkin chemistry and working safely with all the proper hazard equipment.
The master paint mix we made uses casein we derived from milk though can probably get bag of raw casein online. This is used in a lot of paints now a days and are sometimes called milk paints. Fairly easy to make at home and safe to do as well.
Addition of egg yolks was to see if there's possibility of using tempera to help moderate the ability to apply and also better estimate color being drying when it becomes opaque. The slaked lime and such would in theory preserve this fully as well even. We also used oil to help consistency and viscosity.
One of our next plans is to see if saliva centric paints work well because we heard of some cave paintings using it and the properties of saliva being similar to a binder /emulsifier for paint.
We did additionally experimented with magnesium and baking soda paint secondary paint to the lime primary paint.
