Finally, some art?! Yes well actually I drew this one all the way back in May for The History Between Us, a fanzine, which is being organised by the fabulous @77yearsteam! It's going to be included as a print to go with the special edition of the zine, along with a ton of other fantastic merch - and if that wasn't enough, the zine itself is going to be SO incredible! I've already had a sneak preview and it's full of a ton of incredible stories and artwork from some, following these two disaster timelords throughout their long and complicated history. It may be silly to get excited over like 2 seconds of animation in a 6 second clip, but IDC I cannot believe I got spy to shake out his cigarette that smoothly and it was actually fun to do. Funner than it usually is. I can't believe I ever forsook you Graph Editor, I used to be so barbaric. Like he actually followed the keyframes I put instead of doing his own thing and dismembering himself into thin pieces without me having to wrangle him. Actual pose-to-pose and not solely relying on the mental images blasted into my eyelids is FIRE

I used to only love lipsync a lot but now I kind of want to animate a lot of movement!! But I can't most of the plan is to have spy and sniper looking angstily at each other over the bassline, oh the horrors! Whatever it's fine, until I have to do lighting which will be the true horror

(( this is the only critical thing I'm going to say about the show here because there's already a lot of negativity and I'm actually very happy for the people who enjoyed it 💚 ))

With how rushed the season was they could have definitely had Guz Khan (Ivan) as a background character again. There are already so many characters it wouldn't really make a difference.

I don't know what the budget was, and maybe there really was absolutely no way to accommodate another actor, but they also chose to kill him off screen? They could have said he chose to run away, escaped on a dinghy or something silly, and then we could have had him back if they give S3 a larger budget.

This is all to say I hope he isn't actually dead and comes back for season 2 as a badass captain to help them kill off the British ✌️

What do you think of the ending of failsafe in Batman? How failsafe? How did you analyse the “compassion” virus and what do you think Zdarsky was trying to do here?

Okay, so bear with me because it’s been a minute since I read the ending of Failsafe haha, but from what I remember, Failsafe’s whole deal is that he was created to literally be a fail-safe, to destroy a Batman that has lost control, a Batman that has gone beyond the brink, a Batman that broke the one rule: don’t kill.

In order to do that, he was created to be calculating, relentless, and unforgiving, all the things that Batman is, except that last part. I said it before on my answer about Bruce and Clark’s different approaches: Bruce is forgiving, he cares about the criminals he apprehends, he believes in redemption, in coming back from beyond the brink, he has compassion.

So how do you stop a robot designed to destroy Batman? You teach it compassion. You teach it to believe in the worth of every life. You teach it that even a Batman that crossed the line can still be redeemed, just like all the other criminals that Batman cares about.

So, what’s the point to the story? Easy, it’s to remind people that as cool as Bruce may seem any time he says, “I am vengeance, I am the night, I am… BATMAN,” he is still more than that. He cares. (And now we’ve come full circle to how Bruce makes it to my top 3 😜). And all this builds up to Zdarsky’s next storylines that show Bruce being very tested in terms of how compassionate he is (or should be ???). I also think it acts as a reassurance that Zdarsky does in fact get Bruce, he’s just willing to push him to the brink (and beyond) to tell a story. And thank goodness for that.

From a meta perspective (and focusing strictly on the Failsafe storyline), I think stories like this are hugely important to tell in comics because we need to be reminded why our favorite characters do what they do. If we go too long without showing what an unforgiving Batman can do, and focus only on all the baddies he apprehends (and the horrific things they do coupled with the cool way Batman stops them) then more and more people start running around with those dumb “WhY dOeSn’T bAtMaN jUsT kIlL jOkEr?” takes which are so beyond easy to rebut when we just remember that compassion is a thing that exists haha

Another personal hc that I have is definitely one that has a lot of self-projecting onto it. Mostly from the throw away line of 'my knees are creaking' and how the other E4s run to the end of the arena while he takes his sweet time. Couple that with lines on how he fell asleep and is always just resting at the club, a part of me likes to think that he's got some health issues. Maybe joint pain or something that causes chronic exhaustion.

Drayton isn't all too bad with his classes schoolwork wise but he fails primarily on his lack of attendance. Maybe it's partially from days where getting out of bed is hard, or when he can't pretend that everything's all fine and dandy. Sitting down often because standing or walking too long causes his knees to act up. Napping when he can cause he's just low-key tired all the time.

Perhaps he wouldn't have gotten the reputation of being lazy and a slacker if he just spoke up about it but no. He gives me the vibes of someone who dislikes pity, having a level of pride where he prefers to handle stuff on his own. He's got a system with his Pokemon where they help him on bad days. Shame that's how people saw him but it's not like he's making an effort to dispel it anyway. He'd hate it if those displeased looks turned to pity instead

But I'm also a sucker for days where he just can't summon up the energy to pretend around people, and while most just chalk it up to him being lazy again, maybe his friends can tell and help make things a little easier.

(Again, that's just my personal hc with a healthy dose of self projection. I just love putting him through situations haha)

No but, imagine if the reason behind that too is bc how grueling the training of Drayden was. Cause I also have this small hc that Iris really tried to keep up w Drayden's 10k push ups, sit ups, and squats during their training too (so she's a bit built thanks to that lmfao), but Drayton couldn't keep up w that, he tries but he couldn't, his body wasn't frail to say the least, but he wasn't built like Drayden or Iris, his body was a bit weaker compared to theirs, so when he tries, even when he did warm ups beforehand, it'd still leave his body quite sore

That plus the lil hc I have that he always waits for Iris to come back home most nights, so he stays up late most of the time too, making him tired the next day

But yeah, with his pride, he always refuse to get help, to the point he conditioned himself that there really is nothing wrong w him, but there is y'know, and sometimes he can't handle it anymore. There was once his body just needed rest that he didn't go to school at all, it resulted in his fam telling him if he's that lazy then he should just stop going to school and just help around the house, after all, he isn't trusted enough for the gym, wasn't motivated enough to do any kind of work, not even w school, so what's he gonna do

Anyways yeah, this I canon in my heart anon, just let the boy sleep in he deserves it
