the church in the coptic monastery of the virgin mary in bethlehem, palestine. this unique church is built inside of a cave tunnel which connects it to the nearby church of the nativity. the holy family is said to have passed through it during their stay in bethlehem. saint helena, who established churches across palestine during her time, is said to have established this one as well. the coptic archbishop of jerusalem purchased this and four nearby homes in the 1950s, establishing the monastery and re-establishing the church. today, the site is maintained by two nuns.

Quote
When I first met him... he was the most gallant of lovers. He knew so many things. He delighted in sharing his knowledge. He had a castle full of treasures, and he took such pleasure in showing them, giving them to me. He was so gentle, and his skin felt like white silk against my skin. And I gave what I could give to one such as he. When we made love, it was like a flame: I felt utterly engulfed, utterly loved. Treasured. I have been with many poets, many dreamers... but his love alone was ice and fire. His eyes were stars.
Calliope, in The Sandman #71, by Neil Gaiman

Fun fact, I named this file as 'Batman loses to babies'.
This drawing was based on the famous statue in Oslo, Norway. Its pretty goofy, but I found it so funny that I had to base a drawing on it.
Well, hope you like it!

Pulp Covers And How To Paint Them
With the rise of cheap printing in the early twentieth century, mass-marked paperbacks swept the world, each offering lurid thrills for obscenely low prices. Sex, sadism, and incredible violence for as little as ten cents. An easy purchase to slot in between fifty cigarettes a day and enough bourbon slugs to kill a small garden.
Pulp fiction is where some of the greats of American literature cut their teeth, including the big three, Raymond Chandler, Ross MacDonald and Dashiell Hammett. The contents of these stories, both the dizzyingly good and astoundingly terrible, have been absorbed and digested and remixed and regurgitated in nearly every permutation imaginable, fuelling pop culture some one hundred years on. This isn't an essay on that. Nobody likes to open a tutorial and be greeted with a wall of text. The history is for another time.
Tumblr media
But it is about how to paint it.
Don't let the pre-amble intimidate you, it's not as hard as it sounds. You will need:
Painting software with some image editing capabilities. You don't need all the bells and whistles of Photoshop, but I wouldn't recommend something like MSPaint, at least not to start with. I'm using Clip Studio Paint.
A really beat-up paper texture. The grungier, the better.
A lightly-textured brush. Here are the specific brushes I use, 99% of which is the well-named rough brush. Try and avoid anything with any impasto elements.
Go to your colour-picking tool and use the 'select from layer' option. Doing all the painting on a single layer is going to make your life easier.
A complete willingness to make mistakes and, instead of erasing, painting over them. It generates much more colour variation and interest! Keep your finger off the E key.
Good reference! That painting is a master copy of Mitchel Hooks' art for Day of the Ram. Find a style you really love and want to learn? Have no clue where to begin? Do direct studies!
Tumblr media
Let's not worry about whatever is happening in the background. It's probably fine. Let's get started! Pulp magazine art is a lot more varied than you might first think, so don't agonize over having a style that 'fits' or not. I'm also specifically aiming for something you'd see on the cover after printing, not the initial painting they would use for printing. The stuff I'll show here is a pretty narrow band of it, but here are some general commonalities. This is a painting by Tom Lovell.
Tumblr media
Let's dig into this.
Tumblr media
The colours are very bright and saturated, but the actual values, the relative lightness and darkness of them, are actually grouped very simply! You can check this by filling a layer full of black, putting it on top and setting its mode to colour. If the value of a painting looks good, you actually get a lot of leeway with colour. But here's what I think is the most important thing to keep in mind.
Tumblr media
The darks aren't that dark, and the lights aren't all that light! Covers are paintings reproduced on cheap paper. Anything you wouldn't want to happen in the printing process, you lean into. Value wash-outs, lower contrast, colours getting a weird wash to them, really gritty texturing. So let's get painting! Here's my typical setup.
Tumblr media
That bottom folder is the painting itself. The screen layer is the grungy paper texture. To get the effect you want, put it down, invert its colour, then set it to screen. That washes out your painting far, far too much, so to compensate, I put a contrast layer up on top. Fiddle around with the settings, but this is where mine ended up sitting.
Tumblr media
Note I'm saying this before even starting the painting: you want to do this as early as possible. This is where the 'select from layer' colour picker comes in handy. You can paint without worrying about the screen or contrast layer. Something not looking right? Enable your value check layer and keep painting. When you turn it off, it'll still be in colour. Here's a timelapse so you can see what that looks like.
And when you check the values...
Tumblr media
They're pretty simple! This isn't a be all and end all, but I hope it serves as a decent primer. I want thirty dames on my desk by Monday!

The 2DMV for Twilight Light contains various references to previous 25-ji, Nightcord de. media, as well as lots of imagery connecting to the members.
To begin with, each member is associated with an object or two that which appears frequently in the background of the 2DMV.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"of the box that gently resounds"
Kanade's item is a music box, a nod to the music box her father made for her mother. This music box played a significant role in Kanade's first unit event, Carnation Recollection, helping her to realise why her songs weren't reaching Mafuyu.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"of the sealed up cocoon"
Mafuyu's items are a birdcage and chains. This is likely a reference to the marionette doll from Mafuyu's first event, Captive Marionette, that was kept in a similar-looking cage. This doll was what started Mafuyu's arc of rediscovering her true self and realising her mother was hurting her, which culmintated in N25's second arc ender.
Tumblr media
The lyric that accompanies this is likely a reference to Kanade's trained Determination Ignited 4* card, which contains a purple butterfly (representing Mafuyu) locked in a glass lantern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Inside of the picture frame that keeps chasing"
Ena's items are a picture frame and a tin of paint. The tin of paint is likely a nod to the Unsatisfied Pale Color event and Ena's trained I Don't Want to Give Up 4* card. The picture frame is a reference to the Portray Yourself set that accompanied Ena's 3rd unit event, Someday, This Wish Will Transcend the Morning Sky.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Inside of the abandoned mirror"
Mizuki's items are a mirror and ribbons. This is a reference to the IDSMILE 2DMV, the 2DMV for Mizuki's first unit event. Both that song and Twilight Light were produced by toa.
Because of the shared producer, there are also some similar lyrics in both songs, such as "The boundaries have begun to blur, the future uncertain" from IDSMILE, and "The boundary lines where disharmonies resound with each other" from Twilight Light.
Tumblr media
There are also a few references to N25's second arc ender, Saying Goodbye to My Masked Self, most notably there being a glitch effect when Miku sings the lines "I still can't hear you, not yet" and "I still can't see you, not yet". When she appears on a phone screen in the second chorus during the line "I'm right here", she also appears glitched. In the event, Mafuyu's phone was damaged, causing the Virtual Singers to appear glitched when their holograms appeared. Miku couldn't contact Mafuyu for a while before the phone was able to turn on again, hence the lyrics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miku projecting out of the phone is also a nod to how she usually manifests herself to Mafuyu.
Tumblr media
These images appear over the following lyrics:
The melodies that we create, The words that we pull in, The colors that intertwine together, And the scenes that are stitched together,
Once again they contain the items associated with the members in this MV, but the lyrics and on-screen text reference the members' respective roles within N25: composer, lyricist, artist, and editor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before the final chorus, the members of N25 are shown with picture frames behind them, another reference to the Portray Yourself set.
This part of the song contains multiple other references too, including:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The heart-shaped apple gem that originated as a charm on the costumes from the Snow White in Oblivion set, and later appeared as it does in this MV in some of the cards from the Where is ♡? set. Ena's card from the latter set also contains the birdcage associated with Mafuyu in this MV.
The apple is significant to Mafuyu as it was the food her mother would feed her when she was sick as a child. It was this care her mother showed her that caused her to want to become a nurse, the very dream her mother shattered. Those apples might also be Mafuyu's favorite food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blue butterflies that appear during this part and also at the start of the final chorus, which are a reference to the Samsa single jacket, and the Poisonous Fangs and Peeking Shadows set which had butterflies as a motif, particularly noticeable in Kanade's Determination Ignited 4* shown earlier in this post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The phone underwater, which is actually a reference to three things. Firstly, this is a direct callback to the in-game jacket for Lower, Mizuki's second event commission.
However the phone falling in the water also links to a plot point from Saying Goodbye to My Maked Self, when Mafuyu's phone fell in her fishtank during a fight with her mother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The throbber (loading wheel) on the screen is possibly a reference to the arc ender animation that plays after chapter 8 of the aforementioned event, which can be further backed up by the "Chasing your light, at 25:00" text that appears during that animation appearing in the 2DMV about 15 seconds after the phone is shown.
Tumblr media
This part of the MV being underwater also connects to the Searching for a Reflection Beneath the Waters event, which introduced a lake to the Empty SEKAI.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Heart in Water set from that event takes place underwater because of the new location, which in turn might be a nod to Mafuyu's trained Dive Into Me 4* fes card.

when the homes in the depopulated palestinian village of lifta were originally built is impossible to tell and most likely varies from house to house. the area's been known since ancient times, including having been written about in the hebrew bible. it's retained multiple different names throughout history - lifta by romans, nephto by byzantines, clepsta by crusaders, then lifta again by arabs. in more recent times, the area saw battle in the early 19th century, when it saw a peasant's revolt against egyptian conscription and taxation policies. (egyptian-ottoman ruler muhammad ali had attempted to become independent from the ottoman empire, and sought to use the area of "greater syria" which palestine was apart of as a buffer state.)
the village was predominantly muslim with a mosque, a maqām for local sage shaykh badr, a few shops, a social club, two coffee houses, and an elementary school which opened in 1945. its economy was based in farming - being a village of jerusalem, farmers would sell their produce in the city's markets. an olive press which remains in the village gives evidence to one of the most important crops its residents farmed. the historically wealthy village was known for its intricate embroidery and sewing, particularly of thob ghabani bridal dresses, which attracted buyers from across the levant.
lifta also represents one of the few palestinian villages in which the structures weren't totally or mostly decimated during the 1948 nakba. 60 of the 450 original houses remain intact. from zochrot's entry on lifta:
Tumblr media
israel's absentee property law of 1950 permits the state to expropriate land and assets left behind, and denies palestinians the right to return to old homes or to reclaim their property. it's estimated that there's around 400,000 descendants of the village's original refugee population dispersed in east jerusalem, the west bank, jordan, and the palestinian diaspora.
like many depopulated palestinian houses, some of those in lifta were initially used to settle predominantly mizrahi immigrants and refugees, in this case 300 jewish families from yemen and kurdistan. the houses weren't registered in their names, and the area generally saw poor infrastructure and no resources including water and electricity provided by the government. most left in the early 1970s as a part of a compensation program to move out people who'd been settled in depopulated palestinian houses - if they didn't, they were referred to as "squatters" and evicted. (holes were even drilled in the roofs of evacuated buildings to make them less habitable). the 13 families which remain there today only managed to do so because they lived close to the edge of the village.
in 1987, the israeli nature reserves authority planned to restore the "long-abandoned village" and turn it into a natural history center which would "stress the jewish roots of the site", but nothing came of it. several more government proposals on what to do with the land had been brought up since then. this culminated in in 2021 when the israel land administration announced without informing the jerusalem municipal authorities that it issued a tender for the construction of a luxury neighborhood on the village's ruins, consisting of 259 villas, a hotel, and a mall. since 2023, they've agreed to shelve and "rethink" these plans after widespread objection.
the reasons for the objections varied significantly between the opposing israeli politicians - who see the village as an exemplar of cultural heritage and "frozen in time" model of palestinian villages before 1948 - and palestinians - who largely see the village as a witness of the nakba and a symbol of hope for their return. lifta is currently listed by unesco as a potential world heritage site, a designation netanyahu has threatened to remove several times.
many palestinians who are descendent from its former residents still live nearby. like with many other depopulated palestinian villages, they've never ceased to visit, organize tours of the village, and advocate for its preservation.
