Gaslight Hatter: Jervis Tetch X Gender Neutral Reader
Tumblr media
Prompt: 12 Days of AU, Historic Pronouns: None Mentioned *Reader is a cop and the first female cop in America would have just joined the force around this time so there’s no room for pronoun plot holes, use what you want Physical Sex: None Mentioned Rating: T/Violence Warnings: Mentions of murder/serial murder, based on the comic not the movie, reader is a cop but a cool one I guess, Reader referred to as an Alice by Hatter, I hope you’ve read the book Summary: 1890s Gotham is facing a new threat after the demise of Jack the Ripper. A madman dressed as the beloved Hatter from a popular storybook who has a pension for playing dress up with the young adults of the city. As an officer working under Inspector Gordon, it’s your job to protect the people.
With rumors of a giant bat taking down Jack the Ripper crime in Gotham has been down. Playful characters like the Joker and more scary ones like Double Man have all been quiet. However, working with Inspector Gordon has made it clear that there will always be something unexpected. Rumors have been circulating that the Inspector is working with the Batman, but no one seems intent on acting on it with all of the threats that could come up. Particularly the newest one, a man dressed as a book character.
The Inspector introduced him as The Hatter, a man emulating the character of the same name from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel materials. The books had been published only a few decades ago and most people now have a deep love for them, but this man is clearly obsessed. He has kidnapped and murdered several blond citizens from the streets and dressed them up as the little girl Alice and other characters like the White Rabbit. Most of his victims have been young, around your age, those that would have grown up with the book read to them at bedtime.
His last victim was left by the docks, a young man with longer than average blond hair adorned with a blue bow and dressed in a yellow suit. As he was a grown up male Alice. Before that it was a man dressed in a waistcoat with hair burned and fried into white. Before that it was a young woman dressed as the Cheshire Cat. Every last one of them disappeared one night and reappeared a week later with an immaculately detailed costume. All of them seen as a failure on the part of Gotham’s police and its notorious Inspector Gordon.
So he assigns patrols to be doubled and warns against lawmen going after the Bat. Your patrol with your partner is one of many, a short shift in a poor part of town during the dead of night. He is nervous, evident by his fiddling with his belt buckle and the consistent glances over his shoulder.
“We’ll never find him if you keep doing that.” You mutter.
‘Then I will continue, I have no intention of running into that madman.”
“It’s our job.”
He looks at you like you’re crazy. “Our job is stopping muggers, not hysteric villains.”
A sound of a trash can hitting the ground makes your partner nearly jump out of his skin. His knuckles turn white as he grips his billy club and faces the alleyway that the noise came from. You hold an arm in front of him to calm him down. When you turn your head you see the figure that has him so spooked and draw your club as well, but the firearm on your other hip is tempting.
The figure disappears as it steps backwards into the shadows. Your partner pushes past you and runs down the alley, a sudden burst of bravery apparently taking over him. You follow, against your better judgment, but you can’t leave your partner chasing after shadows. They outpace you just enough to lose you around a corner and it forces you to make a guess as to which way they ran. By the time you catch up with them you find the Hatter standing above your unconscious partner.
He does look like the Hatter from the story in what he wears, but his stature is much different. He’s a handsome looking man with greasy hair hidden under his tall hat, a man you might mistake for a common beggar on the street. He holds a watch in his hand and sways it back and forth with a sneer on his face. It is only now that you recall the features of your partner, young and blond, a perfect Alice.
“No need for an extra Alice, deer. Run along, get out of here.”
“You’re under arrest.”
He chuckles. “No, no, no, I can’t. I have a show.”
He raises his hands above his head and widens his eyes. The sparkle in them could be wonder or craze. And his words, he rhymes.
“Let him go, get to your show.”
“There is no show without Alice!” He snaps, forgetting his rhyme. “I want him, I need him. I need an Alice” He whispers just loud enough for you to hear.
“Take me.” You offer.
He chuckles again. “You are no Alice! You are too mean to be Alice.”
“I’m sorry, let’s talk over tea.”
The offer tempts him, he looks at his watch and smiles. His eyes meet yours as soon as he looks away from the watch. “Your hair wants cutting.”
The look on his face seems to hint at something. A line. It’s a line from the book. It has to be. A story you’d heard many times, but the line is so specific it’s hard to find. You knit your eyebrows, mentally searching for it.
“You should learn not to make personal remarks.” You say once you land on it.
The Hatter smiles and looks at you expectantly. There’s more for you to say. You go through the scene in your head, thinking hard.
“It's very rude.” You finish, half questioning the sentence.
“Good! Very good!” He claps his hands in excitement. “You are Alice.”
“I am, Hatter. Now, please, let’s go.”
Your hand is held out to him and he smiles as he runs to you to take it. He’s giddy with excitement as he looks at you. An Alice, the Alice he’d been looking for. Better than the others and much more fun than any White Rabbit.
“We’ll have fun, won’t we, Alice?”
A grin spreads across his face and his grip on your hand tightens. You don’t notice until it’s too late, the watch in front of your eyes swaying back and forth. Your vision goes blurry, then dark. The Hatter picks you up and hoists you over his shoulder, leaving the other Alice behind.

((I've got two separate designs/interpretations of Tetch, and I differ them from the variation of his first name— this one's Jarvis Tetch))

Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Jervis Tetch
A brilliant and eccentric neurologist, Jervis Tetch worked in the experimental medicine division of Wayne Enterprises.  He was assigned to explore means of strengthening the brain to fight off neurological diseases, yet found himself developing technology that would not strengthen the mind but rather enslave it. Using a series of electric antennae and receivers, he succeeded in controlling the behaviors of a group of lab rats.  He manipulated their actions through a broadcaster band fastened around his forehead.  With a stronger circuit, Tetch was certain that this same process would work on humans; that he could control people to bend to his will.
Desperately lonely, Tetch was in love with a secretary at the office named Alice.  She looked just like the titular character of he most favorite book, Alice in Wonderland and was a sweet, innocent and kind young woman.  Tetch succeeded in augmenting his mind-controlling technology and considered using it to force Alice to love him back… and yet he wanted her as a partner not a slave.
When Alice’s boyfriend broke things off, Tetch seized on the opportunity to sweep her off her feet.  Donning a costume, he dressed himself as Alice in Wonderland's Mad Hatter. Armed with his mind control technology (which he had imprinted on to circuit cards encoded with the Hatter's signature 10/6 logo), Tetch took Alice out on the town, creating the illusion that he was a celebrity, respected all about Gotham City.
Although the night went quite well, Alice saw his actions as merely the kindness of a good friend. And when Billy apologized and subsequently proposed to her, Alice happily accepted.
Tetch became unhinged upon hearing of Alice's engagement.  If he could not have Alice as his companion then he would have her as his pawn.  He became The Mad Hatter and used his circuit cards to enslave Alice and a group of others, taking over the story-book land area of Gotham Park as his makeshift kingdom.
Batman interceded, fighting off the enslaved minions the Hatter threw at him.  The broadcaster band that Tetch used to control his pawns was fastened into the brim of his hat.  When Batman knocked this hat off, the pawns all regained their senses and The Mad Hatter was defeated.  Alice and the others were freed and Tetch was sentenced to Arkham Asylum.
It would not be the last time The Dark Knight would go up against The Mad Hatter. Indeed the villain would return on numerous occasions, becoming one of Batman's most formidable of foes.
The great Roddy McDowall provided the voice for Jarvis Tetch/The Mad Hatter, with the villain first appearing in the twenty-seventh episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Mad as a Hatter.’

It's Hatter time with today's rogue, Jervis Tetch!
Jervis was always interested in Alice in Wonderland from the moment he saw the movie and read it. It was just so fun, and free, and colorful. He would often daydream and loved to craft, especially baking desserts, tailoring, and hat making.
His parent's, however, were not so fond of these frivolous activities. None of this time wasting actions would lead to anything, nor were they befitting of the Tetch name. Anything Jervis expressed an interest in, they almost always shut down, or turned into something that they preferred. Jervis wanted to play the flute? The piano was better suited. Jervis wanted a pet cat? They would make a mess and there's no way he'd be competent enough to take care of them. If Jervis ever wore any of the suits or hats he made, his parents would make him change, and remark on how ridiculous they looked.
Along with all these comments about Jervis as a person, they insulted him physically. Jervis was always a chubby person, and there's nothing wrong with that. He was perfectly healthy, but they made him feel like he wasn't. They cut how much he could eat and made him wear clothes that weren't really big enough. This made Jervis stress about eating at all, and stop eating almost anything at all. Or he'd feel very guilty after eating until his stomach actually felt full.
Not only did Jervis' parents treat him like that when they were present, more often than not, they left Jervis alone to do his homework and practice piano. It's also this behavior that led to Jervis developing his accent, as he got it from watching British programs. But it sounds so convincing that everyone would just assume he traveled to the UK for a while.
School wasn't much better, as Jervis was bullied there for his appearance and lack of mental presence (as in paying attention to what teachers or students were saying - I'm not sure if there's a better term for that). Jervis never ate at school, and was alone when he wasn't being harassed or beat up. Being as he was attending Gotham's school for wealthy families, there was also a sense of elitism and was forced upon him. No matter how talented and intelligent he was, it didn't really matter to him. Jervis also got used to being called "Jarvis" instead. He just stopped correcting them, considering they kept calling him "Jarvis" even when he did.
By the time Jervis is in high school, he'd have pretty much accepted the fate that his parents had assigned to him. Letting his parents showboat him at parties, and tell him what classes and career he should start working towards. If he didn't have to actively participate in a conversation, he'd go back to daydreaming. It was much nicer there. He'd have developed Maladaptive Daydreaming by this point, and he'd only continue to get deeper into his daydreams when he wasn't conversing with other people.
Becoming a neurologist wasn't a job Jervis had dreamt of, but it wasn't the worst, considering the options his parents would approve of. He had the skills to do so, and the brain is quite the fascinating thing, really. Jervis did good work, but it was apparent that his boss, Marcia Cates, did not like him and scrutinized what he got done. This made him anxious, and so he often hid the projects he was truly invested in, his mind control devices being the biggest one.
Jervis's co-workers also had a bad habit of handing off work that they didn't want to do, like papers related to their progress, since they knew he was too nice to refuse. Jervis also had a personal candy dish in his office, which they frequently stole from, often leaving him confused as to how he ate them all so fast.
Of all the people he worked with though, Alice was amazing. She worked the front desk and was very nice. She also enjoyed Alice in Wonderland and so the two were able to bond over that in no time at all.
Another bigger alteration to this version of Alice is that she's autistic, and makes sure that people are aware. Her family loves her very much and accommodate her well, if not a little too overbearing. They meant well, but they ended up sheltering her a lot, so she missed out on learning how to read certain social ques, and they never let her know if anyone even had a passing rude thought about her. To be clear, it's not as if Alice thinks she's untouchable because of this, she just genuinely can't tell when someone is being mean to her, unless it was blatantly stated. Otherwise she'd assume they didn't mean to hurt her feelings. I'm not sure if I'm properly articulating what I mean.
That said, a lot of their co-workers treat Alice and Jervis as strange, although they'd still act nicer to Alice since Jervis is easier to pick on, unfortunately. Because of this though, Alice and Jervis would be good at standing up for one another if someone was rude, and not letting the other talk themselves out of feeling bad about something, just because it seems like it shouldn't bother them. Alice would also have noticed that Jervis rarely ate, whether it was a done of purpose or out of forgetfulness on a given day, and bring him food at lunch.
And in line with BTAS, Jervis starts to develop a crush on Alice. He wouldn't know how else to describe how he felt about her, and based on comments Alice would make about her boyfriend, Billy, he didn't seem like the nicest guy. He wouldn't try and get them to break up, but when Alice comes sobbing to him that they've broken up, Jervis does his best to comfort her.
With Alice no longer in a relationship, Jervis asks her on an outing. Jervis means it as a date, romantically, but Alice assumes it just a regular outing to cheer her up. During their date, it's all going fine until Jervis makes a comment that makes Alice confused, so she asks for clarification.
Oops, they both misunderstood. Jervis would be hurt, but he wouldn't blame Alice for that. The incident still adds to Jervis finally having a breakdown, leading to him deciding to become the Mad Hatter. With his mind control, he can fix things. It doesn't have to stay a mess anymore. Finally, things can be like the Wonderland he's always dreamed of.
-Sarsee
