Just putting this out here cause I had to explain it to my mom, but here are the types of fiction (sorry if I leave out any)
Urban fantasy aka “I live in a modern society but turns out the creatures of old live in the forest” Ex: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
Paranormal (Romance) aka “My sexy neighbor is secretly a werewolf/vampire and I’m a human teenage girl” Ex: Twilight by Stephanie Meyer
Epic Fantasy aka “This is a crazy quest isn’t it my dear found family” Ex: Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
High Fantasy aka “This is a crazy quest of prophecy isn’t it my dear found family oh look a dragon” Ex: The Lord of the Rings by J R R Tolkien
Dystopian aka “This future world is apocalyptic and quite obviously favors the rich” Ex: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Utopian aka “This future world seems peaceful on the outside but that just covers all the absolutely insane problems only this 16-year-old can fix” Ex: The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I believe that one of the reasons why literature doesn’t feel like it’s literaturing anymore is because we’ve lost an understanding of what art is. Art is political, it is commentary, and one of the things that capitalism uses is the dilution of art to make it not commentary anymore, but a diluted piece of work. You see this with the dystopian craze that happened years ago. Hunger Games came out and a way that people used capitalism was to create their own stories like Hunger Games without the commentary on capitalism. You can also see this with Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings was a critique of the Industrial setting that Tolkien was born into, yet the books that followed after Lord of the Rings took influence with the whimsical style that Tolkien had, but didn’t do any commentary on how things were at that time. Robert Jordan kinda did that with the post apocalyptic setting in Wheel of Time but some authors… not so much.
Anyway, that is my essay. Have a nice day.

I think I'm in to Mad Max the way most people are in to Harry Potter. Like, I know I'm nuts about Trigun lately, but the Lore in Mad Max is very different, it's hard for me to put into words other than to compare it to things like Harry Potter... Hmm, maybe Lord of the Rings is too far, the lore is not as extensive as something like Lord of the Rings... I mean whose is? Tolkien went ham, but honestly if you gave George Miller enough time and money, it COULD be, that's how much he loves his dystopian world.
And honestly, most post apocalyptic dystopias in books and film are directly influenced by George Miller's work on the first couple of Mad Max movies, and it shows. (psst, even Trigun is very influenced by it)

Why does the Dark Lord kidnap the teammates?
(Part 1/2 of the “Intertwining Strengths” theory; I’ll be using they/them pronouns for the DL, Great Sage and the MH)
And, more importantly, why the Hell didn’t they outright decimate the hero when they had the chance- countless times, in fact?
This was a question that would bother many, especially after how such an opportunity arrived time after time; from ridiculing the hero after they’ve defeated the General monster possessing the princess’ face, to all the times they’ve taken away both our party members and our powers. So many chances were given to them on a silver platter, yet they’ve only taken struck the iron while it was hot once (and it was there that we first meet the Great Sage- so all know how that went down). What gives, Mx. Dark Lord? If MH was such a thorn on your side, why not get to the root of your little issue? Why didn’t you eliminate the threat from the start? Why not just steal their face - it isn’t like it is impossible, as demonstrated in the battle against them -? Boom; issue solved, and you’re now free to reign in ever-choking darkness for all eternity.
Well, to answer that, we need to go wayyyy back to the first few minutes of the game; there, we witness a heavy emphasis on bonds, namely the mother and her rambunctious child, and the lovey-dovey couple. We also saw how one member of each dynamic was torn from the other in such a cruel and unexpected manner in order to drive the surviving half into maddening despair; a move that was made on-purpose by the Dark Lord.
Flash forward to us meeting our first teammate and a little later to our initial encounter with the Great Sage- now, I know what you’re thinking; what is it that ties these two cutscenes to one another? And how are they - including the aforementioned relationships present in GH - relevant to the DL’s seemingly whack methods of dealing with the hero?
Let’s go through them one by one- after we defeat the rockmoths with our first teammate, the Guardian tells us directly that our growing friendship will allow us to accomplish more feats down the line. Cut to a few days later, and we meet the Great Sage- note that, at that point, the DL really WAS aiming for the kill by using a move that we don’t get to see during our battle against them in their castle. After saving us. the Great Sage remarks that they can ‘feel a strange power from within us’, and, like what the Guardian stated, that it will grow over time.
Bonds, friendship, and a “strange” power...
Flash forwards, and I mean REALLY flash forwards, to the fight against the Darkest Lord. In order to take down the villain, the Guardian states that we need all 10 of our party members to accomplish that goal, which is a sound plan in of itself; more manpower = higher chance of success. The group is split into teams of 3-3-4, with the last party being tasked to square off against the final threat to Miitopia- they should be in a weakened state after having 6 heroes taking a dunk on each of their arms, one of which possessing the very staff the Great Sage uses in order to direct their magic, after all, so it should be fine...
...right?
Not exactly; just before the final battle, the Darkest Lord looks down upon the 6 teammates and ridicules them- stating that their true power was far beyond what they just fought against. To demonstrate the full capabilities of their ascension to Godhood, they steal all the faces of said teammates and...fuses with them. The Darkest Lord absorbing countless faces wasn’t exactly stated to be a testament to their omnipotence, but this was.
I am not using the term “fused” loosely here, either; aside from the animation presenting itself as such, you can definitely tell that the Coin monsters are made of the exact same material that is making up the Darkest Lord- material that has GOT to be organic; remember, this isn’t just the Great Sage’s face plastered on some sun-shaped monument, but it is them after absorbing countless faces and, in turn, transforming into a mockery of the celestial object that provides light and life to us all.
So the question still stands...why? Why go through such great lengths? Why the kidnapping? Why the fusion? What does it all have to do with the DL deciding not to kill us after the first encounter with the Great Sage? And what do all this have to do with whatever power that’s growing within us ever since the start of the game?
Putting it simply...that’s because it’s them; our teammates are the source of our divine power- it is our bonds with them that has given rise to the very reality-warping abilities that help us save/carry out our punishment against the Dark Curse.
I know, I know; we are heading down the “Power of Friendship” route - as cheesy as it is -, but it isn’t like my belief that our growing relationships with each party member not being just a mechanic placed in the game in order to make the game more distinct than other JRPGS didn’t come from nowhere, especially when the symbolism pointing towards this information being correct is scattered around each and every corner of the game. Besides that, I can prove it thanks to our secret 11th party member; the horse.
Without even looking at our bipedal friend, one can assume that the abilities you unlock with every relationship milestone indicates a growing level of trust; of them lowering their guards around you, and, yes, that is true...at least initially. The first few abilities, like showing off, assisting one another, and even the pincer move are very much mundane, but it is stuff like resurgences and last wishes that would bring the possibility of some higher power being at play into question- and that is without mentioning how said abilities are unlocked much later in the game (unless if you have a ton of outing tickets or were insanely lucky with the Roulette and have given your miis countless luxurious vacations).
Okay, maybe these abilities are not exactly “heavenly”, per se, and I am not exactly calling it as such- but last wishes and resurgences could very well be an indication of something...much more potent and even more devastating than the power of gods, and that is the Indomitable Human Spirit; our drive that is helping us push through everyday life and stand against the indifference of the universe. Love, desire, and basic determination to live; all of these traits and more that make up the ambitions present in each and every one of us- it is what pushed us humans to be at the top of the food chain. Such a strong resolve that would only get stronger when we have people we trust unconditionally, and a community we can always return to.
And what better way there is to demonstrate said spirit being involved other than Horseplay?
Much like with the teammates, our bond with the horse can unlock various perks; most of them are basic enough, like the ability to ride said horse and it assisting us in battle in various ways, but it is the Horseplay that seals the deal- and what better way to start than with the Cleric’s, Mage’s, Imp’s, and Vampire’s?
In the case of the Cleric and Mage, the horse will gain white wings and fly high into the sky; giving either class a wider range in order to unleash their powers at a maximum output. With Imps and Vampires, on the other hand, the horse will sprout black wings and, depending on the class, will either enter a frenzy and ram head-first against the opponents or assist the hero in enshrouding the area in complete and ever-consuming darkness.
So...not heavenly, but the horse gains traits that are considered as such? What is the big deal? Why the sudden contradiction?
You are, more or less, right; there is a discrepancy present, and that is because of the jobs’ natures! Clerics are closest to the divine, Mages deal with the elements of the world, Imps are considered antitheses to angels, and Vampires are generally deemed as unholy creatures of the night. I only mentioned these jobs in order to clear up the contradiction that was going to pop up sooner or later. The truth is that the horse will either adopt traits present in the jobs their rider specializes in, or assist them in perfect harmony.
In short, Horseplay is an act of pure resonance with the player, much like Last Wishes and Resurgences.
THAT is the “divine power” that was mentioned to us time and time again; resonance, our understanding with each and every one of our party members, and all the happy memories with them. With all of these combined, we would have the strength and will to go up against the mightiest of titans and gods. Who wouldn’t want such an amazing drive? Who else...but the Dark Lord themselves?
After taking all this in, it becomes clear why kidnapping the party members is the DL’s modus operandi; it is to break the hero, dissolve their will, and eventually harvest this power from the teammates for themselves. Sure, the hero still has the horse, but remember that the horse isn’t human- it still lacks sentience, at the day’s end (unless if you take the events in which they attempt to hypnotize the player and wish for a million carrots during an outing to be rooted in reality).
How would they break the hero’s will? By turning their teammates against them, and change them into avatars made to mock and harm the hero, but the symbolism behind each Karkaton boss is another story for another day. For now, we look back at a question that haunted the community ever since the game’s launch, and relish in the fact that the answer to all that is simply the might of the human spirit and the importance of a healthy community.

I asked someone for a book/movie recommendation and I told them that I like Sci-fi especially dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and probably the hint of survival fiction that comes with it. However, I also told them that can't stand horror or anything horrid, gory, or extremely and descriptively violent. Then they then told me that it's kinda weird that I like what I like but don't like what usually comes with it? (Nonverbatim but that's how I understood it)
I mean— I can and have read The Maze Runner series but I probably wouldn't be able to read Lord of the Flies because I can't stand some of its themes. I just can't.
Dystopian fiction are highly descriptive and I'm imaginative enough... I won't be able to stomach reading something with that one particular theme akin to Lord of the Flies iykwim.
Not every dystopian, post-apocalyptic, or survival fiction have to have extremely gory stuff right? Or at least not every bit of it have to have extremely descriptive gory violence... right?
What I usually like about those sub-genres is the slice-of-life that comes with it in between. The dread and the hope, the nostalgia, the atmosphere, the quiet and stillness, the chaos, everything. Sometimes it's just filled with so much contrast and I like that.

Biopunk Dystopia would mock Tolkien
If a country figured out how to reliably alter its citizens on the genetic level, the genetic caste system would look like something out of Tolkien.
Farmers and other undervalued laborers would be altered into hobbits. Small to make them weaker and need less food. Their lack of physical strength could be counterbalanced with motorized farming equipment.
Miners and factory workers would be altered into dwarves. Shorter stature lets them fit into tighter caves and crevasses. They're kept just genetically different enough from hobbits so that they can't interbreed and form families together; this makes it easier for the establishment to inspire dwarves and hobbits to hate each other, which prevents them from recognizing and uniting against their common enemy.
Military service changes from a volunteer basis into a dynastic profession. Ground soldiers and commandos are modified into orcs, ogres, trolls, giants, all of them genetically incompatible with any other caste to discourage the military from sympathizing with the working class, and from rising above their station. Orcs, ogres, trolls, and giants are likewise kept incompatible with each other to foster the same infighting as the dwarves and hobbits, to avoid a mass military uprising.
Musicians, singers, actors, comedians, TV personalities, influencers, professional academics, nepo-baby middle-managers and CEOs... Those sorts of people who make their living by being charming, persuasive, fawning, and flattering but who don't PRODUCE anything tangible...
Those Beautiful People have every reason to voluntarily become elves. Tall, slender, flawless, long-lived, and with none of the unsightly facial and body hair prevalent among the lower castes.
The elves become the control mechanism of the state, the priests who constantly ensure the masses that everything is okay, everything is going according to plan, the elves love you, the state loves you, you're lowly and beastly creatures who need the elves and the state to protect you, especially from those different lowly creatures whose laziness and spite keeps the nation from achieving perfection.
The actual heads of state, who make the decisions that the elves must sell to the masses, would sit back and use the beautiful people as test subjects before becoming elves themselves. But they wouldn't stop there.
The longer the heads of state and their descendants remain in power, the more drastically the descendants begin to diverge from humanity. Eventually the different families ruling the country can no longer interbreed with each other, and can only sexually reproduce with those of their own clans. They have to resort to incest, cloning, perhaps even asexual reproduction.
By the time the nation finally collapses, the rulers have all become freaks, monsters, and demons of flesh.
