I have a thing for Car wash
Tumblr media
Genre: NonIdol!AU, SummerJob!AU
Pairing: OT7 x Reader
Summary: You do car wash as a summer job each year. But this year , 7 new employees are added to the mix.
Word Count: 2k
Warnings: none
A/N: Thoses Butter's concept photoshoot are gonna be the death of me ...
______
Summer’s Job never been dreamy or appealing you always preferred to stay home and play games or hangout with your friends.
You were doing the same summer job from your high school’s years throughout your UNI years, this year was the last year where you could work at the same gas station you usually spent your summer’s at. You were quite happy about this news because your work there wasn’t really enjoyable to say the least.
You were working as car washer.
The staff was limited to you and Gladys. Gladys was an Australian grandma’ with an heavy accent and a loud voice.
You used to complain about the underpaid job and understaff issue to her each year , but even if she tried her best to pay you more each year, the problem of understaff was remaining.
Plus you had the marvelous advantage , note the irony, to be a woman. So of course you had some guy every now and then asking you for some porn kink including cars and water to you.
And of course as soon as you dared to say to them that it was not respectful of them to ask for such favors , well their ego feeling insecure will make them insult you ‘til Gladys will come out and try to dissolve any trouble. And if they didn’t leave… well then Tallulah will come help you out. Were Gladys was a true perfect cottage core granny , Tallulah her spouse, was a weightlifting Olympics coach. So she was , massive and looked very frightening.
But since she was often occupied most of the time Gladys would have to do the trick , and if too much persistent she would call her little brother Jeff a policeman always coming in and out of the shop to check on things.
It was nice, for a summer or two, but seeing as it’s been years since you were first introduce to this summer’s job to say it became painfully annoying was an understatement.
And this year would be the same…
Or so you though.
Gladys finally took your complains about the car wash job being understaffed and recruited a few people to help out .
When she said a few, you though she was talking about 2 to 3 people.
But no, no non no no no. Gladys took in 7 people !
She promised you your check wouldn’t take any damage by the presence of those new employees , but you sincerely doubt that.
And of course you’ll have to show them around and proceed to show them how to wash a car because of course it’s not like anybody could know how to do it by themselves.
You were moody when that tons of information’s felled down on your head, but now finding yourself in front of the 7 new employees changed everything.
Apparently Gladys misspelled car wash job for model’s photoshoot coz’ those 7 boys were for sure way too beautiful to need a car wash job.
It had to be a prank, right?
So being more self aware in what you’ve been for years you showed carefully those men of to do the job. And no it wasn’t cute or sexy, far from it.
You were dressed in your yellow hoodie and black jogging with flip-flop.
For once you wished you had were those fucking shorts looking like panties more than anything, and a crop top or something similar, like all those freaks watching too much porn often asked you to.
But no , and those guys were dressed in matching outfits in jeans and whites tee.
Even if they were very dreamy swoon over , you had more pressing issues to think about.
Like why one of them started a water fight with another one, and putting a stop to it before one of them put soap into their eyes.
“Okay guys!!! Please stop …? I don’t want to have to report you to Gladys on your first day okay? So keep that behavior for when you’re on your own okay?”
“Sorry , we didn’t meant to …” Said one.
“Huh sorry to interrupt , but none of us seems to have catch your name earlier ?” Said the guy with blue hair.
You liked his hair, it was nice, like blue waves , more darker on the edges and lighter on the center of his scalp. He had such beautiful eyes too, so sharp an-
Oh god , wait did you really lost yourself by admiring him?!
“Huh miss???”
“Y-Yeah !!! Haha my name’s Y/N !” You extended your hand , losing your mind for talking in a higher voice to him , good job at not being suspect Y/N….
And you hated yourself even more for being awkward by presenting your hand to him. But he, on the other hand sensed your discomfort and made your move seem completely normal shaking your hand lightly and giving you a cute smile showing off his dimples.
“Namjoon,…. And those two are Jungkook and Taehyung, and I hate to be the one breaking it to you but we’re probably gonna have a hard time keeping them calm.”
“Oh… Okay” You just ended , looking to the two guys involved in the previous water fight, and looking back to Namjoon’s face. He was calm and put you at ease. Hargh you were staring , good job on not being a freak Y/N .
The one all covered in jean from head to toe approached you, and ever so silently spoke to you.
“Hate to be a bother Y/N, but can I have a bucket to wring out my sponge, please?”
“Huh Yeah of course huh-hu….”
“Yoongi’s the name…”
“Oh huh well yeah let me get that from Gladys to you okay I’ll be back in just a sec Yoongi.”
He nodded very calm much to your dismay as you were starting to feel anxious about advising Gladys for more employees, maybe you should have just shut it.
You entered the store who basked in a sunny light as the morning was starting to begin for most of other people’s in the city.
At the register was one of the new employees, he wore a plaid skirt and converse’s with a white thee and jean shirt. You couldn’t believe how gracious his lips draw themselves on his face. They looked pillowy and as dreamy as the six other’s man out there waiting for you.
“Huh hello ? You might remember me from earlier ? Y/N the foremost employee?”
“Of course I do you’re the sweet mango! “
“I’m sorry what ?”
“The sweet mango ! The color of your sweatshirt look alike a mango!”
“I-I Yeah it does…”
“Would you like another nickname maybe? I’m sorry if this one doesn’t fit your style haha. What about little mouse ?”
“Do I look like a little mouse ?”
“No ,you look like a fucking rat”
Said another voice coming from behind you.
“I beg you pardon?”
You turn over to the masculine voice behind you to find yourself facing a chest. Your eyes flew up to the face of the stranger, ready to take down any bratty client. And you were surprised to face a smiling shit eating brunette man glancing down at you . He was snickering and looking at you like he was mentally undressing you with his eyes.
“Yah ! Jin ! Don’t be rude to our new friend!”
You look down to the content in his arms, some sandwiches squeezed between bottles of water.
“Wait your on job duty ! Why aren’t you with the others ?” You started to take over yourself and focus on your task, keeping everything organized.
“Some of us forgot to bring our lunch to work this morning , so I volunteered to go for it , but you’ve been blocking the line too preoccupied to talk to mister big flirt over there.”
He gestured at the cashier.
“We weren’t flirt-“
“You totally were!” Gladys interrupted you coming out from the back of the shop with several boxes of energy bars .
“Gladys I would ne-“
“Don’t lie to me girl ! Okay Jimin go fill up the shelves with those and Jin , you’re lucky you have a nice face, it’s on the house for today so go back to work will you now?”
“Sure thing Gladys! Thank you so much !” He offered her a wink before smirking down at you , going back to his devices.
“AND SHE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE A RAT! BUT YOU SURE TALK LIKE A BRATT!!!” Shouted Gladys at Jin, while a girl was approaching him to take care of her car and asking for his number. He was a blushing mess and Tae had to intervene to talk an eligible sentence to, the poor lost girl, after that.
“Now, Y/N what do you need sweetheart? I mean other than Jimin’s number of course?” She had said it loud enough for Jimin to hear it and bringing a cute smile on his face content of his accomplishments.
“Gladys please stop. “ You warned her with a tired face. She maybe looked old but she was fearless for sure .
“I need extra buckets for the boys, please.”
She leaved the register for what felt only two seconds before bringing over 5 extra buckets for you , to share.
“Thank you , you’re a life savior!”
“I know , should have started a sect when it was trendy.”
You left laughing to her dumb joke , but not before quickly glancing to Jimin. After that event you formed three distinct groups between all of you to get their heads in the game.
But with Jimin busy with helping out Gladys around the store, one of them was standing by himself.
“Okay since your alone I’ll help out for today.”
“Really? Thank you so much I was worried I’ll found myself alone when everyone’s having fun in groups.”
You looked around to indeed found them more busy playing around then actively work in silence .
“Yeah well normally having so much fun isn’t part of the job but I don’t want to kill the mood.”
“I’m Hoseok by the way but you can call me Hobi ! “ He said with a heart shaped smile.
“Y/N. Haha did you had to see Jimin assigning you a nickname too?”
“No this one’s for my crushes .” He said glancing up at you with stars shining eyes behind the comfort of his sunglasses.
“Yah! Hobi Does it mean I’m one of your freaking crushes?!” Yelled a not-so-speechless Jin , across the parking lot.
“Why don’t you come found out ?!” Yelled back a way too enthusiast Hoseok.
The day went by pretty quietly apart from those 7 agents of chaos you were stuck with from now.
Lunch came around pretty quickly and you all went to the back of the shop to have your break there , enjoying the nice breeze of the fan, while chatting.
“So , how come you’re all working here this summer?” You asked between bites of your meal.
“My aunt knows Gladys and told me she was recruiting , and since I was in need of a job I took it.” Said Jimin looking at you oh so charmingly.
“I have a thing for car wash.” Said Jin like it was completely normal.
“Your such a weirdo something hyung I swear… I was in need of a summer job saw the flyers by the campus and thought why not ? Here I am.”
Replied Jungkook slowly slurping down his noodles.
“We wanted to prove some sexist asshole that , no it wasn’t , a job only reserved to women.” Said a disgusted Namjoon swallowing quickly his part of the sandwich.
“I want to be a social entrepreneur.”
Said Taehyung leaving you with wide eyes.
“How is that related to bein-“
“If I succeed to make this place a rentable place from just the car wash then I could do anything.”
“And how would you do that ?” asked Jin dismissing his lunch to look over at Taehuyng.
“What about a photoshoot?”

the light in your eyes and the dark in your heart.
Tumblr media
Word count: 1900+
Warnings: I would say none? It’s a bit mystical, a small bit dark, and there are mentiones of sex.
Author’s note: I’ve reblogged @devilatmydoor Anna’s Ashton x dark academia moodboard yesterday with the tags that it could be a modern day Dorian Gray-ish AU, and after that we started discussing the possibility behind it. I like how it turned out, and I hope it makes Anna happy as well!
Feedback is appreciated!

Ashton Irwin was a mystery.
Hazel eyes stared at you as you gathered your books into a neat stack, making room for the stranger in front of you. The library was quiet and almost empty, yet he insisted to sit with you as you’ve worked on an assignment. A smile pulled at the corner of his mouth, showing off perfect teeth and full lips, and for a moment you were lost in the golden flecks that mixed with the greens and browns. He politely thanked you, his voice like honey, warm and rich, and you were sure he just put a spell on you with those two words.
He lightly tapped his pen against his notebook, scribbling down notes before turning to his laptop, adding a few hundred words to his already lengthy document. You’ve lost your train of thoughts many times during the two hours you’ve spent at the table in the back, and felt your stomach drop when you saw he was ready to leave, knowing you’ll probably never see the beautiful stranger again.
A piece of paper landed on your book, neatly folded into a square, and you saw him give you a smile and a wink as he left the library, bag hoisted up on his shoulder and books under his arm. You slowly opened the note to find a name and a number written down, with a few lines added at the end.
 Friday, 2.30 PM.
Café on Campus.
If you’re busy we can reschedule.
Ashton
* * * * *
Ashton Irwin was loved by everyone.
No matter how many times he took you to the coffee shop tucked away in the corner of Campus, there was always an empty table for him, his order already being made the moment he crossed the threshold. He shrugged, saying that it was easy when you were a senior and everyone knew your name, and he made you sit down as he bought you your favourite drink. He gave a charming smile to the girl working the cashier, dropping a dollar or two into the tip jar, and you could see her eyes sparkle and the blush colouring the tip of her ears as Ashton left the counter.
He always had a nice word to the people he ran into, hands in his pockets as he asked them about their latest struggles and how those worked out for them, making plans to catch up later when both had a little more time. Girls praised him for being a gentleman, always the one who looked out for them during parties, making sure they’ve got home safely. Guys told each other what a good sport he was, always ready for a joke or a good prank, how easy it was to get along with him.
Ashton laughed as you’ve asked him about his reputation, breaking a cookie in half and giving you the bigger one, picking on a chocolate chip before plopping it into his mouth.
”Silly girl,” he shook his head, giving you a knowing smile. ”People love you when they know you have something that they want. Don’t forget that.”
* * * * *
Ashton Irwin was gifted.
The senior has been working on his dissertation since freshman year, always finding new topics to incorporate into his magnum opus. You’ve heard people gossiping about his late night library visits, disappearing for weeks to travel up to another place and look through their collection of books, always looking for something new. Ashton had a way with words – not just when he was talking, but also when it was time to understand them. He always had a book with himself, colourful sticky notes peeking out from the pages, marking all the places he wanted to revisit.
His chosen topic surprised you, but soon you’ve learned that there was no one else who has known as much about gods, demons or the devil making pacts with mortal souls throughout the history of classical and modern art. Ashton quoted sections from the Bible without thinking twice, knowing exactly how many times the Devil appeared and made his move on mankind. He made parallels between the gods making deals with mortals in Greek literature and modern men bargaining with Evil himself. He talked about Goethe’s Faust and Oscar Wilde’s Dorian Gray as someone who has read them a thousand times already; you couldn’t ask a question for which he didn’t have an answer for. Music, paintings, movies – whatever it was, he had it: saved on a playlist, in a folder on his laptop, DVDs lining his shelves, ready to make a new connection regarding all the other art forms.
You ran your finger down the spine of a torn copy of Dorian Gray in his room, the once golden words now barely readable as you’ve asked why he was so obsessed with the pact between gods and humans.
”I’ve made a deal with the Devil,” he shrugged when you cocked an eyebrow at him, grabbing your hand and pulling you to his chest. ”I’ve sold my soul for immortality.”
You rolled your eyes and let him kiss you, his lips tasting bitter like coffee, and sweet like ambrosia.
* * * * *
Ashton Irwin was beautiful.
You’ve never seen someone as handsome as your boyfriend – and no, you weren’t exaggerating. You found that you were not the only one who got lost in his shining eyes or his charming smile. People stopped and stared at him on the street, complimenting his features, comparing him to statues and paintings, asking if he was a model or maybe an angel. Ashton laughed and wrapped his arm around your waist, telling them that beauty was temporary, and that there are much more important things in the world before leading you away.
Yet you needed to agree with them – you’ve thought it was just the love and admiration talking, your budding romance and the excitement of a new relationship. But Ashton always seemed like he was perfectly put together by God himself. Your fingers curled into his silky soft hair, eyes locked on his, trying to name all the colours that made up his curious gaze, lips full and jaw chiselled, arms strong and skin warm against yours. You soon found out about his love for tattoos, but it took you some time to explore all of the different inks painting his skin, every one of them having a story for another night when you’ve made love.
He curled his arm around you, pulling you to his side, blissed out from your shared pleasure. Your fingers tangled into his necklace, playing with the medal before lightly running your fingertip over his nipple, down on his ribs to the tattoo on his side, tracing the fine lines of the inking.
”Do you ever fear death? Dying before your time is up? Staying forever young.”
”I crave it,” he whispered, making you look up at him, but he quickly flashed you a soft smile. ”But not since I’ve found you.”
* * * * *
Ashton Irwin was dangerous.
You wanted to think that it was a joke, a well put together prank to make fun of a naïve freshman. But Ashton wasn’t laughing, his eyes dark and serious as he waited for your reaction. His classmates jokingly called him Dorian Gray, and you’ve thought it was just a play on his obsession with death and immortality, but you found that they’ve been right. Even if they didn’t know just how right they have been.
”You did sell your soul to the Devil,” you couldn’t believe the words that left your mouth, but deep inside you knew they were true.
”And I’ve been trying to get it back ever since,” he moved closer, making you step back until your body hit the shelf behind you. ”Are you scared of me?”
”Should I?” you felt your throat dry up, words stuck in your mouth as he leaned his forehead against yours.
”Silly girl,” he brushed his thumb down your cheek, stroking a lock of hair behind your ear. ”You should be terrified.”
”You’re looking for a solution,” you slowly put the pieces together, and he just nodded, both of you understanding the other. ”How old are you?”
”I don’t even remember myself,” he smiled sadly, fingers cradling your jaw. ”Maybe a few hundred years.”
”Are you lonely?” you tugged on the hem of his shirt, and he took it as an invitation, moving closer to your body.
”Not when I’m with you,” Ashton shook his head. ”You make me feel like I’m free of this curse.”
The sounds of your pleasure echoed in the empty library building, the night quiet and dark around you as you’ve lost yourself in each other, Ashton’s arms tightly wrapped around you as he moaned and grunted, and you took all of him – all his pleasure, all his hurt and sadness, every little confession he whispered in your ear. He was sweaty and out of breath as he curled up in your lap, head resting on your thigh as you played with his hair, both of you knowing that this was probably the end. You knew that when the morning comes he will go back to his books and tales, looking for the one thing that could make this all right. He knew that you will probably stick around until the end of the semester, transferring to another school so you don’t to have deal with the hubris he has brought upon himself.
”You know– I’ve seen a flat down on Main Street,” you lightly tugged on his curling hair, and he slowly looked up at you. ”It’s up for rent.”
”Are you sure about it?” something flashed in his eyes, a glimmer of hope as you’ve nodded, making a smile tug at the corner of his mouth.
* * * * *
Ashton Irwin was free.
His heart was bursting with love whenever he opened the door to your shared apartment, finding you in the kitchen making dinner, or curled up on the couch under a blanket, his old copy of Dorian Gray lying on the floor next to you, your finger still stuck between the pages. He always checked where you were at, reading a few paragraphs before marking your page and putting it on the coffee table, running his fingers down your cheek to wake you.
Ashton couldn’t remember the last time he felt alive. But with you tucked against his side as the two of you watched a movie or walked around the city when everyone else was already asleep – that is when he truly felt free. He promised himself he will stop trying, and start living, working on being the best version of Ashton, the one he thought you deserved. He didn’t want to think about what will happen in a few years, how are you going to explain to people that he stopped aging a hundred or so years ago. He just wanted to be happy, even if it only felt like a moment in the long life that still awaited him.
On the morning of your graduation day Ashton climbed back into bed next to you, bouncing on the mattress as he tried to wake you. You sleepily blinked up at him, ready to give him a dirty look for making you get up so early – and that is when you saw it. A lock of grey hair hung over his forehead, making his smile brighter than the sun. You wrapped your arms around his neck, tugging him closer to kiss him, wrapping the stray curl around your finger.
”You’ve never looked more beautiful,” you whispered on his lips, and you felt Ashton blush, burrowing closer to you.
He’s never felt more beautiful or loved than that morning. He was alive. He was free.

Imagine : Ateez (One Member)
Imagine swapping phones with your classmate Seonghwa by accident.
this was longer than I thought...
Tumblr media
Being the class president has its perks. First, the teachers love you so you get away with anything, though you don’t cause trouble that often. Your classmates try to befriend you so they too, can get away with being late, forgetting homework etc. Of course you noticed that’s why they were being overly friendly you weren’t oblivious. Even with that, people treating you differently and all, there’s one classmate that hasn’t treated you any different. Park Seonghwa. He’s the class nice guy, friendly with others and teachers are fond of him. You guys aren’t close to being besties but, it’s safe to say he’s a good friend. Aside from your friends, who are in different classes, Seonghwa is the only person you kind of socialize with in class.
You two eat lunch together, and share notes from class. It’s mostly innocent smiles and laughs with him and frankly if people didn’t know any better, they would say you and Seonghwa were dating. However, you knew he doesn’t see you like that. His type was the sexy, confident popular type of girl. You were the adorable, funny, regular type of girl. Not popular but not an outcast either. Your friends love to tease you about him and though you try so hard to deny it, you like him. It’s hard not to.
One day, you decided to help the soccer team look for a new team manager, because that’s what class presidents do right, plus you didn’t mind helping. Scouting for a manager took time, which lasted a whole school day and after. You left the school’s parking lot around 5, some of the boys on the team offered to walk you home but, you were ‘just up the block’. Which you weren’t, the walk home was at least 35 minutes. Walking back was going to be hell, so you wanted to at least treat yourself to something.
Your eyes landed on a nearby Bubble Tea store. You loved bubble tea, so you jogged across the street and walked in, the ringing of the bell gets you off guard. It’s not like you been here before. You walked near the counter, looking up at the menu above. You actually don’t know what you want, usually it’s some green tea but you wanted something sweet, just didn’t know what specifically.
“I’ll have a Chai Tea latte and she’ll have a peach smoothie.”
You look aside to you to see Seonghwa ordering...for you. You blinked in surprise, all the while trying to act fast getting your wallet out, but he was faster and handed the cashier a twenty.
“You’re order will be ready shortly.” The cashier says, handing Seonghwa back his change.
“Surprised?” He says breaking the silence. You both grab a seat at the window, you chuckled at his question.
“To say the least. Thank you, you didn’t have to.”
“You were just holding up the line, president.”
You managed to giggle at his comment, there wasn’t really a line anyway. You pulled out your phone to see the unread messages by your friends. How does one group chat come to over 60+ messages. Some tea must have been spilled you thought.
“You have that phone charm too?” Seonghwa’s voice interrupted your thoughts. You give a glance to your mini bunny charm, you saw his eyes lit up as he pulled out his phone flashing the same charm only in a different color.
“M-My kid sister bought this for me as a birthday gift.”
“Really? I bought this for myself as a birthday gift.”
“Wait, seriously? This cute, little blue bunny?” You giggled once again. You never knew Seonghwa had this child-like soft side to him.
“Yeah, I thought it was cute.” He set his phone aside on the table when he heard your order called. He excused himself to go get them, you also placed your phone next to his to see the matching charm next to each other.
It looks like couple charms...
You shook your head, no way can you be thinking that. You shouldn’t rile up your own feelings like that. But can you blame yourself? To others on the outside, this would look like a bubble tea date, and the matching charms don’t help. You glanced over at Seonghwa who was making his way back and your cheeks blushed a soft pink.
As time passed by, you and Seonghwa were getting along amazingly. You always knew he was a nice guy but to learn these new details about him made you feel somewhat special. Though everything was going smoothly, you had to get home and it was getting dark. Seonghwa offered to walk you home and this time you didn’t protest or feel bad. You genuinely wanted to keep talking and hanging out with him.
“Man if I knew you lived so far, I would’ve drove you home instead.”
“You mean on that death bike of yours? No thanks, I like living.”
“Hey, my Louis isn’t a death bike. Don’t worry, one day when you ride with me, you’ll love it.”
Ride with you? On his motorcycle? He would want to?
“Hm, maybe you’re right. Next time then.”
Before you could change your sentence, because let’s face it, what next time? You were at least 75% sure he’ll go back to just waving at you in the halls and nothing more. You started feeling worried, maybe you thought too much ahead of being his best friend...or something more.
“Next time? Sounds great, I’ll give you call then.”
Wait..
“You don’t even have my number.” You don’t remember giving him that earlier or ever.
“Sure I do. Remember I didn’t show up to school one day? My perfect attendance ruined. Anyway, you texted my number about the class assignments I missed.”
He saved my number since then?? That was–
“B-But that was like a month ago.”
Which was true. You had to find one of his friends, Minki? Mingi? To ask for his number since as class president you didn’t want any of your classmates to lose their pace in education. You had done it before with a couple of others but they never saved your number.
Seonghwa only shrugged his shoulders whilst whistling away. A natural blush spread across your cheeks again for what seems to be third time today.
After a little while of walking and talking, you both finally reached the end. You thanked Seonghwa for walking you home and he smiled and said something along the lines of ‘it was no big deal’. You waved him off as he did too, you stood outside your complex building doors to see Seonghwa walk back. You hoped he would return home safe at this hour.
An hour later, you were starting to get ready for bed. Homework was done, face was washed, hair was in a messed up bun and teeth were brushed. Just as you were about to turn off the lights your phone rang.
But it rang weird. Since when did you have your ringtone as Sunmi ‘Gashina’ ?
That’s when you saw it. This wasn’t your phone. It was the same model and color but the blue rabbit charm was certainly not yours.
Not to mention it was your number calling you. It was saved as ‘Pretty President’ and it’s picture was one of you, off guard with eyes fixated on a book in your hands. Somewhat to be in a library but you couldn’t tell. You answered the phone.
“H-Hello?”
“Class President?”
“Seonghwa?”
Then you heard his sweet, awkward laughter.
“Uh, I think there’s been a mix up.”
“You have my phone?”
“As you have mine.”
What luck and trickery this was for you. Lucky because you at least know who has your phone, trickery because of Seonghwa having your phone.
“We probably just grabbed the wrong one then earlier. Sorry I didn’t notice.”
“I didn’t either, until I got home.”
You laid down on your bed, trying to calm yourself down. You hoped Seonghwa wasn’t the snooping type. Yeah, you had a password on your phone but it was a simple ‘1234’ and now you wished desperately you changed it before. You could hear the rustling, shuffling and long sigh. The sound of a bed creaking gave you the answer that he was on his bed too.
“Uh, can you promise me something?”
“Um, yeah. What’s up?”
“Don’t try to snoop through my phone.”
“I was about to ask the same thing!” You laughed.
“Wait really? Is that what you think of me, president? I’m–”
“Seonghwa, whatever you’re about to say, you’re the one that asked first. So maybe I should be offended.” You hopes he could hear the sarcasm in your voice.
“You’re right, next time I’ll just think before saying, president.”
“Why do you keep calling me president? Don’t you know my actual name?”
A little doubt grew in your stomach for who was you for Seonghwa to remember by name? ‘President’ is a nickname so you wouldn’t be offended but did he really not know you’re name?
“Of course I know your name, y/n.”
The sound of your name roll of his tongue squished any doubt you had. You liked how it sound when he said it, so easy and soft. Like he’s been saying it for years without hesitation.
Not knowing how to continue the conversation, you decide to ask about your contact name he had. Butterflies swarm in your stomach knowing this phone call was going to last all night.
“I think I like the name ‘Pretty President’ more, what about you?”
“.......Can you hold on for one second?..........FUCK! She saw it when I CALLED HER! MY PHONE! SHE HAS MY PHONE! Shit I didn’t think...damn it. I’m an idiot. She knows. She knows. She–maybe not.”
“Seong-”
“I’ll just play dumb. Does that work? Fuck, she’s smart, she’s gonna find out I fucking like her. Damn it why didn’t I grab my phone!!”
“Seonghwa! You didn’t mute yourself.”
“Oh.”
You were right, this conversation with Seonghwa over the phone took all night. You were sure by the end your feelings for him grew even bigger, as his did for you.

Alone, Together | Chapter 8 | Morgan Rielly
Tumblr media
A/N: This is a little bit of filler / a little bit of insight into Bee, but I promise things are going to pick up a bit from here :)  Thank you again for all your lovely asks, comments, reblogs, and more!  A quick reminder that I respond to all messages and asks about my fics, so if you have any questions or comments, don’t be afraid to send them my way.
It was the Toronto Maple Leafs’ home opener.
Despite an essay being due that day at 5pm, and despite another assignment being due in two days, one worth a whopping 40% of her mark, Bee had promised Morgan she would be there.  ‘It would mean a lot to me’ he had told her one night after they had finished a steamy round of sex at her place.  ‘It would mean the world to me if you could be there.’
How could she say no to him as she was wrapped up in his arms and entangled with his body?  How could she say no when his voice was so soft, his intentions so pure, his heart so full?  How could she say no to watching him do what he loved?  It was the easiest yes she ever told someone.  The biting of his lip to suppress his earnest smile afterwards made her want to blow him for the entire fucking night if it meant the smile never left his face.
Bee always had five-year plans.  They began when she was eleven years old and browsing the internet at her local public library about how to live apart from an alcoholic parent.  Almost all of the websites she found talked about living with another relative, but she didn’t have any.  Then the words ‘legal emancipation’ came up.  This was Bee’s first five-year plan: document everything her mother did (or, in reality, didn’t do) to have a case in court that she should be withdrawn from her mother’s parental control.  She was successful.  Because Bee voluntarily withdrew parental support and left home, her mother wasn’t legally obligated to support her – which was exactly what she wanted.  No more contact with a mother who would spend money on alcohol instead of food or decent shelter.  No more obligations to a mother who, by her own inaction, forced Bee to start fending for herself at an age most kids were still playing with dolls or kitchen sets.  No more vulnerability exposed to a woman whose severe alcoholism didn’t make her care at all about her own daughter, however wanted or unwanted she was.  No more addiction.  No more alcohol.
Once she was legally emancipated from her mother, Bee’s second five-year plan, which spanned ages 17-21, came into effect: get into university, then get into grad school.  She got a job as a cashier at a grocery store and worked after school and weekends to earn enough money to rent out a room in the basement of a house near her school.  She got letters of reference from her teachers for little-known scholarships not many people would be applying to.  She maintained a high enough average that U of T gave her an academic scholarship to cover about half her tuition.  When she won the other scholarships, she was safe in knowing her tuition would be covered and she wouldn’t have to incur debt or other loans.
She was currently in the middle of her third five-year plan: get into grad school, graduate with a job offer, and work.  At 22 years old, she was on the right path to achieving it.  If all went well – which it had to – her fourth five-year plan would come into effect: work hard to get at least one promotion, save enough money, and buy a place.
The plans were contingent on some things working out for her – like keeping her current apartment at the rent she was already paying and getting a job as soon as January when she didn’t have to attend classes anymore – but she knew she would be able to do it.  She worked hard so that everything ‘worked out’ before.  There was no reason it couldn’t work out again.  And again.
What the plans were not contingent on was her meeting someone.  They were not contingent meeting Morgan Rielly of West Vancouver, British Columbia, and actually becoming, as corny as it sounded, completely smitten with him.  The plans did not include making out on his couch for hours, falling asleep in his bed while watching Netflix, or having a game on in the background while she marked.  The plans did not include spending a good three hours researching everything to do with hockey and the Toronto Maple Leafs so she could, even just slightly, begin to understand his life.
But she was letting him in.  Fast.  He was quickly becoming a part of her life, an established part of her life.  So established, apparently, that she agreed to go to his home opening game without so much as a second thought.
The energy inside Scotiabank Arena was palpable.  Bee cheered and clapped along with the rest of the fans, family members, wives, and girlfriends in attendance as the announcer was introducing the team.  She made sure to scream extra loud when Morgan’s name was called, and she noticed how loud the arena got when John Tavares was announced.  From beside her, John’s wife Aryne couldn’t stop filming the reaction.  They were opening their season against the Montreal Canadiens, and Bee knew she had to boo them because they were one of the team’s oldest rivals.  A Canadiens player scored the first goal, but the energy wasn’t sucked out of the building at all.  In fact, it came right back about three minutes later when Auston scored a goal to tie it.  When Aryne pointed out that Morgan got an assist on the goal, Bee screamed even louder.
When the first period ended, Bee remembered that she had twenty minutes to spare before the second began.  As she watched some of the other wives and family members get up to go to the washroom, she looked down at her messenger bag and then to Aryne.  She wondered if it was appropriate to take out her laptop and work in between periods.  Did anyone else ever do that?  She was sure that in the entire history of hockey, there had to be one girl who took out a book or notebook or laptop and focused her attention on something other than hockey.  Getting an education never looked bad, right?  “Aryne…”
“Yeah babe?” she answered absent-mindedly while looking down at her phone.
“Do you think…I mean would it look bad…” Bee began.
Aryne finished typing her text before locking her phone and looking at Bee.  “Would what look bad?”
“I…have…I have homework,” Bee said, completely embarrassed.
“Oh my God!  Are you joking!  Take that stuff out right now!” Aryne cried.  “You have homework?  What are you working on?”
“Richard Thaler’s theory of behavioural economics.”
“You take it out right now and start working,” Aryne demanded like a mother.  “You’ll be setting a good example.  Some of these girls need to be doing homework instead of filming themselves drinking wine for the Instagram stories.”
Bee snorted.  “You’re something else, Aryne.”
“I’m being serious.  I’m trying to be less judgemental as a whole, but I still can’t help but feel snippy about dropping out of school to be an Instagram model with a YouTube channel,” she said.  “I went to McMaster and got a bachelor of science in kinesiology, then I got my Master’s from Queen’s in physiotherapy.  All while John was playing hockey in New York.  You don’t need to be shy about breaking out a laptop with a 100-page PDF because I know that feeling.”
Bee couldn’t help but think back to what Angie had expressed when she and Mason found out Bee was dating a hockey player.  ‘All those girls wearing Aritzia on King West, all those Instagram model girls are looking for people like him.’  Yet she was the one here for Morgan, not an Instagram model.  Were things changing?  Was it still out of the realm of possibility in this day and age, where so many people went to university, that a hockey player could date a girl smarter than him, with two degrees?  Aryne proved it wasn’t an anomaly.  So did Alannah.  She was sure other women did too.  She wasn’t so out of place after all, was she?
“Okay, thanks Aryne,” Bee smiled, not feeling as bad about it anymore as she dug into her bag to get her laptop.
“I’m going to run to the washroom but I can grab you something if you want?” Aryne asked as she stood up from her seat.  “Some wine, maybe?  Behavioural economics sounds…tedious.”
“I’ll be okay.  Thanks though.”
As Aryne left, Bee focused her attention on exactly what Aryne had predicted: a PDF about behavioural economics that was required reading for the assignment she was working on.  Family members around her mixed and mingled with each other as she zoned in, conceptualizing the theory in her head and adding some notes to her assignment.  She knew she wasn’t going to get the entire thing done within the two intermissions she would be given, but it helped.  Anything helped.
During the second period, John Tavares scored his first goal as a Maple Leaf and the entire arena, including Aryne, went nuts.  She couldn’t stop jumping and dancing around, and she even stood on her seat and stretched up to high-five John’s parents, who were sitting two rows above them.  And though the game went into overtime, it was poetic justice when Auston Matthews scored the game winner.  It couldn’t have been a more perfecting ending, a more perfect start to the season.  The Leafs beat their rivals.
Bee could start to understand, at the most miniscule scale, how and why people loved hockey so much.  If they got to feel like this because of the team on any given basis, she would be a die-hard fan too.  She knew there were probably some not-so-great times, and she knew sports were a lot more complicated than this simple understanding she had right now, but it was interesting to see this side of things – this world she didn’t have privy too growing up, or even now.  If she hadn’t have met Morgan, she didn’t think she would have ever been able to experience this.  It was fun and exciting and confusing and daunting all at once – much like everything else in her life up until this point.  After having to figure out life and survival on her own, having people like Morgan, Ashley, Alannah, and Aryne to guide her into this new foray was a welcome blessing.
When the game was finished, Bee followed everybody backstage where they patiently waited for the boys to be done with interviews and other post-game happenings.  Bee was chatty with Ashley and Alannah when they boys started to file out.  Like the pre-season game, when Morgan made his way through the doorway, his hair was a dishevelled mess.  He looked so cute.  He immediately found her in the crowd of people and made his way over.
“Hey,” he greeted her with a smile, bending down to kiss her quickly.  She still had his jersey on and, stereotypically, it was his favourite look on her.  The way her brown hair fell over the letters of his last name somehow drove him crazy.
“What a game!” she smiled excitedly.  “Auston’s first goal!  And you assisted!”
“I know, Bee.”
“And then John!  First one as a Leaf!  Then overtime!  Auston again!” she recounted the game to him as if he wasn’t there.
He nodded his head and his smile got wider with every exclamation from her.  “You’re buzzin’ right now,” he laughed.  “Buzzin’ like a bumblebee.”  Seeing her so giddy about a game of hockey made him ecstatic.
“It was a great game!” she adjusted her bag on her shoulder.  “The crowd loved it too!”
“Did you bring homework?” he asked unexpectedly as he noticed her bag.
“Y…Yes?” she answered apprehensively.  “Remember how I told you I have that assignment all about behavioural economics…” she tried to explain herself.
“Atta girl,” he whispered, dipping down to kiss her again.  “You ready to go?  Wanna come over mine?”
She shook her head at his request.  “I’ve got class at nine in the morning tomorrow,” she explained.  She thought about whether or not she should add the second part.  “You want to…uh…come over mine instead?”
“See ya guys later,” Morgan announced to everyone, giving a big wave to everyone before grabbing Bee’s hand and pulling her along with him.  She laughed, knowing this is the exact same exit strategy he took last time when they left during the pre-season game.
As they made their way to the Scotiabank Arena’s underground parking lot, Morgan continued to hold her hand until they got to his car.  Ever the gentleman, he opened the door for her before walking around and getting into the driver’s seat.  He started the car, but instead of backing out of his parking space, he just looked at Bee.  When she noticed they weren’t moving, she looked over to see him staring.  “What’s wrong?” she asked.
“C’mere,” he whispered.  She leaned over the centre console and he kissed her gently, bringing his hand up underneath her shin.  He gave her a few more kisses.  “Thank you for being here,” he whispered.
“It was a lot of fun,” she reiterated her sentiments from earlier.
“I know, but I really mean it,” he said.  “I get how you like to be alone so I know it’s a lot for you to come to these things.  I know it takes a lot of like, energy or whatever, especially for introverts, to be around big groups of people…so thank you,” he whispered.
With every kiss and with every comment like that he made to her, it was getting harder and harder for her to ‘take things slow’ and ‘not put a label on it’.  Her words.  She was humbly aware that they had only met in late July.  She was humbly aware that since then, in all of their interactions and dates and adult-themed sleepovers, they hadn’t fought once.  She was humbly aware that with each passing day, he was carving out a place in her life she hadn’t made room for; one that he nestled into comfortably, without disruption, without fanfare.  Like he was always meant to be there.
She was also humbly aware that with each passing day, now that the season had started, it was going to get harder.  She would miss him when he was gone.  She wouldn’t be able to see him as often because of traveling, or because of practice, or because of the schedule of game days.
“I’ll always come and support you,” she said.  “I know you’d do the same if I played hockey too or whatever.  Plus most of the girls are great.  They’re very warm and welcoming and it doesn’t feel…I don’t know, tiring to be there, or be with them.  I might have to ask you for some extra tickets sometime though so I can bring Angie and Mason.”
“You just tell me when,” he gave her one last quick kiss before finally reversing out of the spot.
When they finally arrived back at Bee’s apartment, Morgan undressed while she washed her face and brushed her hair in the washroom.  He stripped down to only his boxers before getting into her bed, lying down with the covers half-draped over his body.
“I thought your backcheck was good tonight,” she said from the washroom.
Morgan couldn’t believe what he was hearing.  Did the word ‘backcheck’ just leave her mouth?  In the right way?  In the appropriate context?  “Um, excuse me?”
“You heard me,” she said as she appeared in the doorway, brushing her hair and sweeping it over one shoulder.  “Your backcheck was good.  Like, I know you’re a defenseman, so that’s kind of your job…I think…but I looked for it tonight and thought it looked good.  Better than the pre-season game I went to.”
“Who are you and what have you done with Briony McTavish?”
“Shut up!” she giggled, throwing her hairbrush back into the washroom before making her way towards the bed.
When she climbed in, Morgan’s grabby-hands went into full effect, guiding her body towards his.  He only meant to cuddle and be close to her, but Bee took it as an invitation to climb on top of him.  He wasn’t exactly complaining.   “Where’d you learn all that?” he asked.  Despite being genuinely curious, he couldn’t help but be more interested in the feeling of her straddling him on her bed.  His hands caressed her exposed thighs and squeezed at the flesh.  Her pajama shorts were riding high.  Morgan licked his lips at the thought of what they could get up to.  He wondered if she could feel him getting hard beneath her.
“I studied,” she grazed her fingertips lightly over his chest.
“You what?”
“Mhm,” she giggled slightly.  “It’s what I do best, Morgan.  I researched and I studied.  I even know who Mike Babcock is now.”
“Well you know what…” he said, his hands wandering from her thighs to her hips, grabbing at the flesh there, too.  If it were up to him he would grow extra arms to be able to touch every inch of her body.  “I studied too.”
“You did?”
“Mhm.”
“And what did you learn?”
He gave her a look.  “Macroeconomics.”
She giggled at the tone he used, how nefarious the look on his face was.  “Oh.”
“I have something even better,” he winked.  He propped himself up so he could get even closer to her.  He gave her a quick peck on the lips before continuing.  “Microeconomics.”
She snorted, unable to hold in her giggles.  “Talk dirty to me, baby.”
“Be careful what you wish for,” he mumbled as he began kissing her, leaving a trail along her jawline to her ear.  His hands traveled to her thighs again, but this time slipped in between the gaps of her shorts.  “Karl Marx,” he continued, biting down on her skin.
“You know how to make a girl horny, don’t you?” she tried her hardest to stop laughing, but her attempt was futile.
“The proletariat and the bourgeoisie,” Morgan continued.
“Oh my God Morgan,” she chastised him.  He was beginning to sound like a first-year economics student who thought they already knew everything.  He bit down on the skin of her neck while simultaneously slipping his hands underneath her shirt, pulling it up.  “Morgan.”
He kissed his way back up to her ear.  “Alan Greenspan.”
“NO!” she exclaimed immediately.  The mention of Alan Greenspan definitely did not get her off.  She broke out into a fit of laughter.  “ABORT MISSION!”
“AH!” the look on Morgan’s face was one of pure fear.  “Oh, um, KEYNESIAN ECONOMICS!”
“Yes!  That’s better!”
“Social safety net!” he exclaimed again.
She began to cackle from laughing so hard at the absurdity of it all.  She fell beside him, giggling like a man woman.  She could feel her eyes well with tears for how hard she was laughing.  “There’s something wrong with you,” she managed to giggle out.
“Stop trying to get me to lose my momentum!” he accused her.  His large body hovered over hers as his hand found her hips again.  He began kissing her again; light feathery kisses along her jawline and neck as his fingertips traced their way along the elastic band of her shorts.  “I’m trying to seduce you here.”
“It works when you mention Karl Marx and the proletariat.”
“Oh yeah?” he smirked at her response.  She nodded her head.  “I gotta brush up on my reading of the Communist Manifesto then.”
“I’m more of a Das Kapital girl myself.”
Morgan rolled his eyes.  “Okay, who’s getting the economics degree here again?” he posed the question, garnering another laugh from her.  “Should I start signing up for classes?  Don’t start treating me like one of your first-year students.”
“I don’t know,” Bee rolled her eyes playfully.  “Might get to boss you around a little bit.”
Morgan’s eyes lit up.  “I like the sound of that.  Gives me an uprising in my pants.”
Bee cackled again, pushing his body off her.  Morgan collapsed onto her side, laughing at the silliness of it all.  The mood was ruined but her heart was full.  She couldn’t believe it.  “You’re something else, Morgan Rielly.”

Tumblr media
Once you and Namjoon picked out snacks (popcorn and M&Ms, of course) and drinks, you sat down together in the theater. Namjoon’s curious hand hovered over the bucket filled with golden goodness and you watched expectantly as he took a handful and popped it into his mouth.
“Well?”
“It’s good. Like. Really good. Holy shit, I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on this.” He grabbed another eager handful, a few stray pieces falling from his hand and landing on his sweatshirt. You giggled. God, he was so cute. “Can I try some M&Ms?”
“Of course.” You tipped the bag into his hand, leaving him a little pile of the chocolate candies before eating a few of them yourself.
“These are good too, oh my God…” He hummed, and then wiped his salty, buttery hands on a napkin.
“You’re gonna do this every time I introduce you to new foods, aren’t you?” You teased, laughing as you ruffled through his soft hair. He laughed too, grinning shyly and trying to hide behind his large hands.
“I’m just excited, I’m sorry--”
“It’s cute, Joon. It’s really fucking cute, don’t apologize.”
“You think I’m cute?” He blushed, heart lurching.
“The cutest.” You smiled, reaching up to pinch one of his adorable dimples.
“(Y/N)?” You looked up at the sound of someone calling your name. It was Ella, one of your BTS-obsessed friends. Fuck. You’d been able to squirm away from the cashier at Hot Topic, but Ella...Ella was smarter than that. She’d catch on that something was up. You weren’t sure how you were going to get out of this one…
“Ella! Hey!”
“How are you?” She walked up to where you and Namjoon were situated, right behind the railing at the front of the top section of seats.
“Doing great, you?”
“Oh you know, same old. I’m down there with some of my friends from my dance class.” Her eyes trailed to Namjoon and a mix of emotions fell across her features. Disbelief and confusion being among them. “And this is…?”
“Um, this is my, uh, friend...um, Joon...sung. Joonsung.”
“Right. I’m Joonsung.” Namjoon offered his hand, following your lead.
“Nice to meet you...Joonsung. Has uh, anyone ever told you you look like--”
“Namjoon? Yeah, I get that a lot. My parents moved here from Korea in the 80’s, so we might be distant cousins or something.”
“Oh. That’s really neat.” Ella seemed dumbstruck. You looked up at Namjoon, impressed. He was as quick-witted as his namesake, and in this moment, you were thankful for it. “Well, it was nice to meet you. We’ve gotta meet up sometime, (Y/N). You wanna have a study night this week? Hunker down at the library and get some work done?”
“Yeah, sounds great! We can ask the group chat after the movie.”
“Yep! See you later.” Ella walked down to the front section of the theater, where her friends were waiting for her. You sat back down, exhaling a relieved sigh. A close call, to say the least.
“You just saved our asses.” You laughed. “God, that was close…”
“We’ve had a few of those today, huh?” Namjoon chuckled and shook his head. “I didn’t think borrowing someone’s face would be so difficult.”
“It’s your face, too.” You pouted, looking at him. You knew it had to be tough, to be...well, modeled after someone else. Even moreso now that he was walking around in public and...human. But it was still hard for you to watch him feel bad about it. “It’s your face as much as it is his.”
“Well, it’s not, though.” He shrugged and stared at the cupholder between the two of you. “It was his face first. Years before it was ever mine.”
“You know, I read once that everyone in the world has like seven dopplegangers out there and they don’t even know it. As far as anyone knows, you’re just...one of RM’s. Hell, there are like seven people out there that look just like ME and it’s not like they ‘stole’ my face, right?”
He thought about it for a few moments, a smile slowly conquering his features. Namjoon nodded. “Thank you. You make me feel...so real. Like...like this is something I was always meant to have.”
You met his eyes, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear. “Who’s to say you weren’t?”
Namjoon didn’t know how to reply to that, so instead, he only smiled. The lights dimmed shortly after that, and the movie started twenty minutes later. Maybe Namjoon was mistaken, but your hand just seemed to be sort of...resting on the armrest over the cupholder. Hmm. He wondered why.
And so he wondered for a few more minutes until it occurred to him that maybe...this was a Thing that girls did when they wanted their hand held? Were you sending him some secret message that you WANTED him to hold your hand? His heart raced, palms suddenly feeling sweaty. He subtly dried them on the surface of his new jeans and swallowed thickly. Jeez, no one ever told him navigating a human crush would be so difficult.
Well, actually, Yoongi had.
So, he spent the next few minutes building courage. How was he supposed to KNOW you wanted to hold hands with him? He didn’t know much about humans. Maybe this was just what human people did, resting their hands right over the cupholder between them and the person they were out alone with. When you’d held hands in the mall before, it was different. It was FUNCTIONAL. It was so he didn’t get lost in the crowd. Holding hands with you here, in this dark theater where there was no chance of him getting lost...it was different.
And yet, despite all of that, he still found his hand tentatively hovering over yours, his heart racing faster than it ever had before. His warmth met yours, and you melted against his touch, fingers welcoming his and giving his large hand a reassuring squeeze.
He looked over to find you smiling bashfully, and he knew he’d made the right move. Maybe this human thing wasn’t so hard after all.
You held hands with him the whole movie. Namjoon couldn’t believe this was happening. He was actually HOLDING HANDS with YOU! You’d been a giant compared to him only the day before, and now, he was not only human-sized, but he was TALLER THAN YOU by a margin large enough to warrant him bending forward to kiss you.
Woah, Namjoon, knock that off. He stopped his thoughts before they could wander any further. Holding your hand and kissing you were two very different things. And yet, it was all he wanted to do now, all he could think about. He’d overcome many hurdles today, and yet, he was scolding himself for wanting just one more. Would it be too much to ask? Just one kiss? He’d never kissed someone before, and after all, you wanted him to have as many human experiences as possible, didn’t you?
He tried to pay attention to the movie, he really did, but all he could think about was you. And so, before he knew it, the credits were rolling and the lights went up. You turned to look at him.
“Did you like it?”
“I did!” And it wasn’t technically a lie. He loved this movie because it was the reason he was sitting there with you, his large hand wrapped around yours. “What time is it?”
“It’s like...five o’clock. Jeez, we better get home to the guys. I’ll make us some dinner when we get there, alright?”
“Sounds good.” He nodded. As fun as his day out with you had been, you were right. You shouldn’t leave the boys home for this long. Plus, there was a new little friend in the shopping bag hanging from your arm rest, and he knew how much it sucked to be stuck in a box for an extended period of time. There had been a time when he didn’t know anything BUT his little plastic box. And now, he was out in the real world. It was wild how fast his life had turned around. But he wouldn’t have it any other way.
***
When you got home, you handed Koya to Namjoon to get him out of his little plastic prison while you started boiling water for the noodles of the pasta you were going to make.
“You’re back!” Jimin greeted excitedly. He was managing the right side of your Playstation controller while Jungkook was manning the left as they fought yet another digital dragon.
“Did you have fun?” Yoongi smirked from his spot on the couch. He’d woken up from a wonderful nap not too long ago, but at the moment, he and Jin were on your laptop, doing research. They weren’t exactly sure how their friend had made the transition from plastic to person, but they’d like to do the same if the universe would allow it.
“Lots of fun, thank you very much.” Namjoon chuckled. He peeled the plastic off of the box and then lifted the clear plastic cover. For a little while, Koya sat there motionless, and Namjoon panicked. “It’s alright, little guy. You don’t have to pretend anymore. We’re not going to hurt you.”
“Like he’s going to believe that coming from a human.” Yoongi shook his head and left the laptop to walk over to where Namjoon was sitting on the other couch. He used his large human hands to lift Koya out of the rectangular black box and set him on the table instead. “Let me try.”
It shouldn’t have stung when Yoongi said it because he was right, and Namjoon had always wanted to be human...but...there was something hurtful about his own kind being afraid of him. So afraid of him that they wouldn’t move even when he told them it was alright.
“It’s alright, Koya. You don’t have to worry about scaring him off. He already knows. Until this morning, he was a doll like me.” Yoongi told the little Koala, petting the top of his furry blue head.
Slowly, he looked around, blinking. He looked up at Namjoon with big, innocent eyes. This man looked just like his dad. JUST like him. So, not resisting the urge anymore, Koya ran into his dad’s arms, nuzzling against his warm chest. Namjoon swore his heart about exploded, and he embraced the little blue koala carefully. There was some sense of paternal pride welling inside of him. Was this what it felt like to hold your child?
“We’re gonna take care of you, alright? I promise.” He murmured, cradling Koya as he walked to the kitchen, where you were talking to Hoseok and Tae. You’d put your hair up and were standing at the stove next to a pot of boiling water. You put the noodles in and stirred it a few times before letting it sit for a while.
When you turned around, Namjoon was standing there, holding the cuddly little koala, and your heart melted.
“Koya, meet (Y/N). She’s gonna be your mom.” He said, softly bouncing your new bundle of joy.
“And what does that make you?” Hoseok chuckled.
“Well, I’m his dad, obviously.” It took Namjoon a moment to realize what he was insinuating, but when he finally did, his cheeks flushed red. “Well, um, I mean, if you want to--”
“You think too much.” You teased, poking Namjoon’s nose. “I mean, we’re human, so...kind of going to be the parents around here for the time being.”
“Yeah...O-of course.”
“I see your humanity hasn’t made you any less awkward.” Tae laughed. “Still our clumsy Namjoon.”
“You can take the doll out of the clumsy, but you can’t take the clumsy out of the doll.” Hoseok agreed.
“Oh hush.” You walked up to Namjoon, who still had Koya cuddled against his chest, and gently pet his little head. He snuggled against your hand. “Welcome home, Koya. I hope you like it here.”
He nodded wordlessly, reaching his stubby little arms for you, so Namjoon let you hold him for a few minutes while the noodles boiled.
“Need any help around here?”
“Could you just set the table? A napkin and a fork for each of us.”
“You got it.” He walked over to the silverware drawer and pulled out two forks, laying a napkin under each one.
“Thank you, Joonie.” You smiled and handed Koya back to him so you could handle the noodles.
Namjoon sighed softly, watching you cook dinner, your new little blue friend in his arms, and he finally knew what it meant to go weak in the knees. You were his girl. You always had been, but now...he didn’t know how to ask you to be more...

Secrets
Author’s Note: This is my first time writing for a request so I hope it’s not a disappointment. And I may have gotten a little carried away. Also it’s my first time ever writing X-Men/Mutants. Please feel free to leave feedback :)
Pairing: Peter Parker x Reader, Nightcrawler x Daughter!Reader
Summary: You’re a mutant who was taught to not be afraid of your mutation, but to be cautious of humans who hate you. Keeping your natural silk blue skin a secret was tough, but even harder to keep from your best friend and secret crush; Peter Parker. But what if Peter had a secret too? And what if you both shared a secret?
Word Count: 2233 (it’s a long one and i'm not 100% proud of it but I tried)
Warnings: Cussing and kissing, so not much.
Mutant and Proud. That’s what your grandmother had always told you. Sure, Mystique was a role model to many mutants, but she was your hero as well. And with the master shape shifter being your grandmother, naturally you were quite skilled in that area too. Though you also inherited a whipping tail from your father, Nightcrawler. In case you haven’t put two and two together, you were also naturally blue. However, your blue was on the lighter side and your skin was smooth to the touch.
But this didn’t stop you from constantly shifting into human form. Of course you loved being a mutant, it made you unique and special, but the criticism and demeaning comments from close-minded humans did strike a nerve with you. So you chose to stay human in public, like your grandmother used to. It just made life easier, which is exactly what a high schooler needs.
When you were younger, you and your father lived at Xavier’s Mansion and there you were educated by the magic mind himself. As things started getting tough again for mutants, your father moved you guys into the boroughs of New York. Queens to be exact.
That’s how you wound up at Midtown High, school for science and technology. Also known as a school for the “gifted” as the locals liked to call it. Little did they know you were both gifted in academics and powers.
~~~
Your friendship with Peter Parker was one that blossomed quite unusually. You were in chem when you noticed your lab partner mixing some white sticky substance in the drawer next to him.
“Hey, what is that? I thought we were using cobalt and nitrogen. Why isn’t it blue?” You asked leaning over to get a closer look before he slammed the drawer shut.
“Oh uhh yeah.” He stammers.
“Then.. what’s with the secret white stuff in the drawer?” You questioned, raising an eyebrow at the nervous boy.
“Um that’s for Ned. Yeah he’s trying to plan a, uhh, silly string surprise for Michelle. Ya know, perk her up a bit.” He forced a laugh, turning back to the experiment at hand.
“Well I’m quite good at chemistry, if I do say so myself. I could definitely help with the silly string if you want.” You offered with a smile. And for some reason, Peter couldn’t help but agree.
Now here you were five months later laying on the couch in Peter’s apartment studying for an upcoming test. Aunt May just step out to run to the store and pick up dinner leaving you and Peter to the apartment alone. Not like anything would happen between the two of you, he thought of you as just a friend. Besides, he didn’t even know about the real you. He knew the “human y/n” not the natural y/n. Peter would probably go running for the hills if he saw you shift blue. Who wouldn’t? Apparently the only mutants that were truly accepted were those affiliated with the Avengers. The precious little “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.” The ones who didn’t have to face the snarky comments and derogatory remarks. What you wouldn’t do to be one of them…
You were pulled from you thoughts as door flew open revealing May walking in with bags of groceries and two pizzas in hand.
“Hey kiddos, why don’t you take a break to eat. I don’t know, maybe watch a movie or something. You’ve been going at it for hours and at this point I don’t see how you could possibly learn anymore.” She places down the bags and boxes, moving over to take the red notebook from Peter’s lap.
“Hey May..”
“Nope. Eat. You too, y/n. Both of you. Up up.”
You and Peter locked eyes and with a shrug you both shot up from the couch making your way to the pizzas. Peter grabbed the box, you grabbed some drinks and movies then made your way back to your spots on the couch. Once you pushed in a movie, the two of you curled up into your usual cuddling position. Peter laid back on the couch, feet up, you tucked under his arm resting your head against his shoulder and an arm tracing patterns on his jean clad thigh. His hand was tracing his own little patterns on your arm, soothing you from the stress of the upcoming test.
These moments were your favorite, just you and Peter. Everything was perfect in those moments. It didn’t matter that you were holding back a huge secret from Peter (or that he was holding one back from you). These were the moments that you two could both just relax together. That is until you moved and noticed the hairs on Peter’s arms stand up and he tensed under your touch.
“Shit shit shit shit shit.” Peter mumbled under his breath, pulling you up with him as he rushed to his room.
What the hell. You followed him, barging through the door to his room. Now the sight before you was definitely not what you expected. You stared at Peter wide eyed as he stood before you trying to pull a body suit up his very toned body.
“Pete..”
“Shit y/n!” He exclaimed, finally pulling the last of the suit up.
“Pete what are you doing… are you..?” You couldn’t believe this. I mean it would explain those times Peter goes running off suddenly or how he always made it to your house in under 10 minutes, but still. Peter? He’s the Spider-Man?! Compared to this, your secret suddenly seem normal.
“Y/N, I uhh,” his eyes darted across your face, taking in you shocked expression. “I don’t know what to tell you.. But I gotta go. Something is going on and I need to go check it out. Promise I’ll explain later!” And with that, the boy who you suddenly fell even more for took off through the window.
~~~
You didn’t see Peter again until chem the next day, despite staying at his place until 10:30 hoping to catch him coming back in. May even offered to let you spend the night, but you knew your dad would start to panic if you didn’t come home. He was always so worried that you’d run into some anti-mutant supports and just wanted to keep you safe. Now here you were, not so patiently waiting for Peter to come strolling into the classroom.  A minute to the bell, Peter slid in next to you.
“Hey y/n, how are you toda—”
“Cut the crap Peter. What was that yesterday and why were you out so late? I had to tell May that you got an emergency call from Ned. Something about him getting locked out of the house so you went with his spare key. Thank god she thinks Ned would do something like that. Now are you gonna explain to me about this Spider—” you were cut off with a glare from the teacher as she made her way down your row, passing out tests.
“Hush it you two. Or you’ll both be taking F’s.”
“Yes ma’am.” You replied, sending Peter a look that said ‘you’re not getting out of this.’
After class Peter pulled you guys into a classroom that was luckily empty, seeing as most teachers took lunch off and left their rooms. He check the hall one last time before shutting the door and making his way over to you. You crossed your arms, a hard look on your face as you eyed the nervous boy in front of you.
“I uh, guess you know my secret then.” He sighs, running a hand through his hair.
“Yeah I guess I do.”
“Look, y/n, I wanted to tell you. But Mr. Stark warned me about how you could become a target and taken as ransom or whatever and I couldn’t bare to put you through that. The only other person who knows is Ned. And that’s because he saw me taking off the suit too. Man I should really start locking my door.” He rambled on, hands flying all over the place as he spoke.
“It’s cool Peter. Actually I have something to show you too..” you thought it over quickly. Might as well show Peter your blue, it’s only fair if you both know each other’s secrets. “I, uhh, I’m actually a—”
You were cut off by Michelle who stomped through the door, “There you two nerds are. Come on, we have practice right now for decathlon right now.”
Grabbing your arm she dragged the two of you out of the classroom towards the auditorium for practice. Looks like you’ll be telling Peter later.
~~~
Funny enough, you told Peter in a way you least expected. You two were walking home from school deciding to skip out on the subway for a change. Peter’s arm wrapped around your shoulders, your’s around his waist. He was about to bring up your past discussion on what you wanted to show him when you heard gunshots go off.
Releasing him from your waist, the both of you turned to the source of the shots. You spotted people running out from a department store on the corner. By the time you looked back at Peter he was dashing down a near alley, pulling the suit from his backpack. Somehow your old training at Xavier’s sparked a flame within you as your feet carried you in the direction of the store. Pushing open the doors, you noticed the gunman at the cashier, bullet holes in the wall next to him. Slowly you made your way down the isles towards the hooded man. That is until a flash of white crossed your line of sight, followed by red and blue. Just in time. Peter knocked the gun from the guys hand, stalking towards the man. The coward took a few steps back, allowing Peter a chance to ask the cashier if he was alright. This also allowed for the robber to pull a knife out of his pocket, lunging at Peter. Your heart pounded as the reflected light of the knife shown in your direction. You knew what you had to do.
“Peter move!” you shouted, jumping in the way snatching the knife with your tail.
“Y/N? What the… are you a..” he watched on as you flipped the guy with your tail, successfully knocking him out. You looked down at him as he laid merely lifeless on the ground. It’s been awhile since you've fought, looks like Logan’s training really did pay off.
“Looks like you know my secret then, huh?” you repeated Peter’s previous words, a slight smile forming on your face. Looking down you noticed you’d also shifted back to your natural blue state. The pressure and stressed distracted you from trying to stay in human form.
“Yeah looks like I do.” He replied, sending you a small smirk.
“Oh uh, sir are you okay? At this point you could just call the cops inside, they've been waiting outside for a chance to come in. They've noticed that it works best if they let me handle things first. But uh, have a nice day and stay alert!”
Peter pulled you with him out of the shop, shooting a web to a nearby building at swinging off to a rooftop.
“Listen y/n,” he started, pulling his mask off and taking a seat on the edge of the roof, pulling you down with him, “if we're letting out all of our secrets right now then I’ve gotta tell ya. Okay umm so I like you. I have liked you for months now and I’m not sure why I waited so long to tell you but I—”
“Pete I like you too. I have for a while now and honestly I didn't think you felt the same.” You shivered as the wind started picking up. Peter pulled you into him, instantly warming you up. “I just didn’t think my blue form would be very.. uh… accepted by you.”
“Are you kidding me?! I think it’s awesome! I’m actually a bit offended that you think it would change how I think or feel about you.” His face fell at the thought of you thinking he’d actually treat you differently just because you were born differently than him.
“I know, I'm sorry Peter. It’s just my dad isn’t a shape shifter so he’s always blue and normally has to cover it with makeup and he worries about me and I guess it makes me paranoid about what others will think and I really didn't want to lose you because you're the best person in my life and it’s crazy how—”
You felt a soft pair of lips on your own shutting you up. You shifted to your side carefully to not fall off the building, placing your hand on Peter’s cheek.
“Shut up. I like you. You like me. And we're both a little special. Now that all the secrets are out, can we kiss again?” His question causes blood to rush to your cheeks as you nod your head.
Who would’ve thought sharing your secret would be a good thing. And who knows, maybe a mutant dating an Avenger will help people become more welcoming to mutants. This could be the start of something great not only for you but also for society.
Harry starts to receive notes from a secret admirer, Louis starts to get jealous of Harry’s budding friendship with senior Nick Grimshaw, Zayn and Liam develop a thing for each other, and Niall is the best mate anyone could have asked for. And suddenly, Harry’s crush on Louis doesn’t seem so utterly hopeless anymore. (70k)
- A Love Like War, by  sincewewereeighteen : Or: the one in which Louis Tomlinson is a cliched rock star, he’s got everything except for love. - Magical Soup by @gloriaandrews : Slytherin prefect Louis Tomlinson’s seventh year at Hogwarts takes an immediate turn for the worse when he’s made to be potions partners with Harry Styles, Hufflepuff’s resident heartthrob and class clown.  Louis has always considered Styles to be a terrible show-off who coasts by on his charm and good looks, but the more they work together, the more he questions that idea.  As term goes on, will Louis be able to admit to himself that he might actually like Harry Styles after all… and maybe, just maybe, as more than a friend? (28k)
-   All The Attention, All These Intentions,  by  sweetlullabies :   or the fake relationship au where Harry is an aspiring musician and also Louis’ biggest fan–until he actually meets him. (120k)
- Curtains, Cataclysms, and Constellations , by aclosetlarryshipper : Harry doesn’t understand the boy next door.People don’t normally send surreptitious messages through the form of symbolic emotion and quick glances if they want to be left alone. - Faking It  , by TheCellarDoor  :   Aka Harry pretends to date his best friend to escape unwanted attention from a too insistent classmate and hopes it won’t blow up in his face. (10k)
- But Why Wonder, Why Wonder? , by @100percentsassy : The one where Marcel Styles has improbably landed a job in the fashion industry, and Louis Tomlinson is the actor-turned-lingerie-designer he’s been infatuated with for years. (30k)
-  In the Checkout Line,  by  onedirectioninthetardis:  Louis is a cashier and Uni student. Harry is the awkward kid who comes through his line nearly every day. Louis knows that it’s just so he can talk to Louis, but he doesn’t say anything. He quite likes it. They become friends, and then maybe a bit more.or Louis is quirky and confident, and Harry is awkward and adorable. They basically make the perfect match. Louis builds Harry’s confidence, and Harry makes Louis lose his shit. (9k)
- Take Me Higher Than I’ve Ever Been , by crimsontheory :  Harry is pretty simple. He goes to work everyday, comes home, then watches Netflix with his cat. And if he happens to have a tiny little crush on his coworker, then that’s just his own business. [Or the one where Harry and Louis work together and Louis starts to notice Harry back. Featuring a wedding, a sassy cat, and first times.] (51k)
- little wings on my shoes, by @juliusschmidt : You have C Lunch?”  Louis asks, peering over at Harry’s work. The problem Harry’s just finished is printed neatly, the correct answer circled. Harry’s finger marks the next problem in his book as he copies it onto the page. It doesn’t look like he’s stealing the answers out of the back. Nice.   He’s dimpled and smart.   And probably gay. - to be loved (and to be in love) , by nouiiam:  “What? I’m a very quiet person.” Harry shrugs, shoving his hands in the pockets of his jeans.   Louis purses his lips.”You seemed a bit more reckless, I guess,” He says. “Must be the curls.”  “Must be,” Harry agrees, nodding and smiling. Louis makes a humming noise and pokes the corner of Harry’s mouth.  “Those dimples, too. Very rebellious looking,” He tells him, crossing his arms and grinning like mad. -or the one where Louis’s popular, Harry’s not and they bond by trying to get their friends together while accidentally matchmaking the entire school. (30k)
- Foolishly, Completely Falling , by dea_liberty: “Now that he’s actually gone and done it, there seems to be no way of going back - no rinse and repeat, no ctrl+alt+del, no abort button, no help to be had. He’s fallen into a black hole and he cannot seem to find a way out. The black hole is also known as Tumblr. More specifically, it’s known as Tumblr’s Larry Stylinson tag.“OR: The one where Louis becomes a Larry shipper by accident. (8k)
Update on Oct.31th 2017 :
- In All Its Imperfections  : From: Louis Tomlinson To: Undisclosed Recipients Hello! I’ve asked the front desk and you lovely folks are the ones who are on the same level as me in the car park. I found a to-do list today that looked somewhat important because it has lines of poetry scribbled at the bottom that seemed like they might be for a card project. The stationary has a moose in a canoe at the top of it (and he is quite adorable). Let me know if it’s yours!Cheers!“ --- Oh. My. Fucking. God,” Harry whispered, his eyes darting over the sentences again willing them not to make sense. They did, they did make sense. “Oh. My. Bloody. Fucking. God.”The next thing he knew he was on the floor, staring at the ceiling, with a very concerned Liam hovering over his head."What happened, mate?" Liam asked.Harry just pointed to his computer.Liam bent over Harry’s desk to read the email. “What? This isn’t bad. Is that your to-do list? Did you finally come up with the inside text for those cards?”“Leeyum" he groaned. “It’s what’s on the list.”“Oh,” Liam paused for a beat. “Is it dirty stuff?”Harry nodded.There was more silence. And then, “Dirty stuff with Louis?” (15k, E)
- come away with me : Or, Louis has to pick up the pieces of his and his daughter's life after his wife dies, and Harry is a beautiful stranger that just wants to help. (80k, E)
Lin wasn’t expecting his phone to ring at 5 in the morning. He wasn’t expecting anything but a solid sleep that he desperately needed after too many late nights full of work. Funny thing was, life had a screwed up talent at ruining expectations.
His phone lit up in the dark, vibrating against the wooden bedside table with a vicious energy. With a groan, he stabbed a button blindly and brought it to his ear without even bothering to emit a greeting. It was too early for that.
“Lin. Listen, it’s 5 am. You wanna go to McDonald’s with me?”
Her voice tugged something in his brain and the centre that was responsible for releasing endorphins and happiness had a field day. Hearing the voice of someone you loved, even at 5 in the morning, did that to a person.
“(Y/N). Listen, it’s 5 am. No fucking way.” His voice was husky and sleep-addled, all kinds of mumbling.
“Too late! I’m outside in my car, I’m coming upstairs to pick you up. Let’s go!” Her voice was unbelievably cheerful for the ungodly hour she seemed to ignore.
He groaned audibly into the phone, rolling over onto his back. “Are you fucking kidding me, (Y/N)?”
“Not at all. I’m already two floors up.”
“You’re lucky I love you,” he mumbled, huffing with the effort of pulling himself from the warm embrace of his bed.
“Love me? Whoa there, Lin, step back. Chicken nuggets and I, as you may well know, are in a very committed relationship. Now come open your door.”
With that, she had hung up and he groaned again, reaching blindly to grab a sweater. Dragging heavy, tired limbs to the door, he reached out and tugged it open, squinting when his gaze was assaulted with the hallway light.
“Nice Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sweatpants, nerd,” her comment made him pretend to close the door in her face before giving her space to walk into his apartment.
“Yeah, screw you (Y/N), don’t pretend I can’t see Captain America on your freaking shirt,” Lin teased back. Truth is, he loved the shirt: Captain America never looked as good as he did on her.
“For your information, Steve Rogers is an icon, Lin-Manuel, and don’t be grumpy.” He rolled his eyes, making her grin: annoying him was always fun, the mutual teasing being a natural thing by now. “By the way, I need to borrow a hoodie.”
“That’s probably the third hoodie you’re stealing from me, did you know that?” He challenged, heading to his bedroom and grabbing an old Wesleyan hoodie from his college days.
“It’s not stealing if you ask for them!” She justified, raising her eyebrows. “I just…forget to return them, that’s all.”
He chuckled despite his attempted annoyance, then turned to face his friend just as she pulled the black fabric down. Freezing a bit, he could do nothing but stare. She looked beautiful. Well, she always did, but in a Captain America shirt, some red flannel pajama bottoms and, oh God, his sweater, she looked so wonderfully human that it made his heart hammer at eight times its usual speed.
“What are you staring at? Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s too big.” She huffed, keys jingling in her grip as she walked past him.
“No-no, it’s...it’s a good size.” He laughed, half a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.
“Let’s get going. I can smell the fries from here, god dammit, they’re taunting me.”
After running down the stairs - well, she ran, he lazily followed her - they got to her car. The old model was parked in the worst way possible in front of them.
“You need a new car,” he commented while struggling to open the door.
“Screw you, this car has saved our asses way too many times for me to get rid of it easily,” she smiled, opening the passenger’s door from inside the car for Lin. “Besides, it has some charm and I’m too lazy to move all my tapes to another one.”
The moment she mentioned the tapes, he had caught a glance of the mountains of aforementioned cassettes in the glove department. Automatically curious, he reached in and sifted through them, reading a couple mixtape titles before realizing that most of the ones she had kept were the ones from him.
March 16th, 2003 - the “just cause” mix. October 31st, 2003 - spooky! January 1st, 2004 - happy new year, (y/n). February 14th, 2004 - for your lonely ass on valentine’s. March 26th, 2004 - all the latino songs i talked to you about. April 18th, 2004 - romantic songs ‘cause you’re not single anymore. May 2nd, 2004 - angry songs ‘cause your ex sucks. May 21st, 2004 - this is just to say.
“I can’t believe you kept these.” He murmured, still in awe as he flicked gently through cassette cases.
“Of course I did, dork. What, did you think I was going to throw them away?” (Y/N) grinned, pushing the key to start the car and pulling out of the parking lot. “Choose one, play it.”
His fingers ran through the tapes as he quickly read the titles, all in his handwriting. After a few seconds, he pulled one from the bunch.
“The “just cause” mix, it is,” he grinned, pushing it into the tape player. Immediately, Bon Jovi pretty much blasted through the speakers and (Y/N) sent him a knowing look.
After a full performance of the first two songs, involving many incidents where Lin had to remind (Y/N) to put your hands back on the wheel, you’re still driving, holy fuck, a comfortable silence ruled the cab and he found himself smiling in spite of his exhaustion.
“Wow.” Her voice broke the silence and he turned to realize that she had an eyebrow raised at him.
“Wow what?”
“Wow, you haven’t complained about me dragging you to McDonald’s at 5 am yet.”
“Yet is the key word. There’ll be whining, just you wait. Now listen to the stupid mix I made you and be quiet.”
Despite his attempt to remain huffy and cross his arms, a smile broke out on his face anyway and the girl in the driver’s seat laughed, giving him a salute and promptly closing her mouth, but not for long.
You see, the songs were a mix of 80s and 90s songs they both loved to sing along to well, just ‘cause. It was impossible not to start a duet when the roles were so perfectly set up between the two from listening to the songs together so much. Almost all the choruses were screamed in joy together and before they knew it, a yellow letter M was coming into sight.
“Are we going in wearing pajamas?” Lin asked as (Y/N) carefully pulled the car into a parking space.
“You got a better outfit hidden somewhere?” She asked ironically, raising an eyebrow. “C’mon Lin, it’s five in the morning, you think anyone’s gonna be there this early?”
“Well, we’re here, aren’t we?” He shrugged.
“Yeah, ‘cause I’m insane and dragged you along. There is no one in the world like us, Miranda.” She grinned, turning to get out of the car.
He couldn’t help but grin at the statement, a smile brightening his face as he stepped out of the beat up vehicle to follow her. It was just like old times: just the two of them against the world.
As always, his friend was right. McDonald’s was completely deserted, but for the tired employee behind the counter. He could see her visibly cringe the moment she realized their presence and he immediately felt a stab of guilt.
“Hi I-I’ll have an Egg McMuffin and  large black coffee, please,” he attempted an exhausted smile, not bothering to look at the menu.
“I’m sorry sir, but the breakfast menu will only be available in an hour,” the cashier replied, her voice sounding as tired as Lin’s.
The moment he fully understood her words, he moved to slowly turn and face (Y/N), eyes wide and glazed over, as if he’d just seen the apocalypse itself.
“(Y/N).”
“What.”
“The breakfast menu’s not on yet. The breakfast menu’s not on yet.”
“Yeah, and?”
“And?” He squeaked, looking at her with pleading eyes. “How am I going to survive without a coffee?”
“Stop being such a crybaby and get a McFlurry. I’m paying anyway.”
“(Y/N), paying? Wow, being up this early really did things to you,” he stated, surprised.
“Did you bring your wallet, genius?” She asked, already aware of the answer.
“Shit…no,” Lin noticed, while trying to find his wallet in his pocketless pajamas.
“That’s what I thought,” she smiled.
Turning to the counter, she checked his hip with her own, shuffling so she could gently push him to the side.
“Can I have a twenty piece chicken nugget order and a Snickers McFlurry? He’ll have a crushed Oreo one.” She gestured to him without a second glance and he chuckled.
Wordlessly, the clerk nodded and set to work as (Y/N) dragged Lin to a free table. Well, they were all free, so it was more like her dragging him to a table.
“Twenty pieces? It’s a good thing we’re sharing.” He grinned.
“Oh no. No, no, I never mentioned anything about sharing.” She let her chin down to rest on her hand as she sent him a smile of her own. “All twenty pieces belong to me.”
He mimicked her position, and the two of them stared at each other for just a moment, matching smiles and all. She was so beautiful like this. Her hair was slipping out of it's badly made bun, the sleeves of his too-big hoodie covering her hands; he couldn’t resist reaching out to tuck a stray hair behind her ear. Her eyes widened but she didn’t shy away from his touch. Instead, she moved, an infinitesimal amount of space, closer to his hand. Lin opened his mouth to say something, a wave of fondness that bordered too closely to love, welling up inside him, until the woman at the till spoke up.
“Order 62 is ready.”
(Y/N) broke away from his touch as casually as anything, but it made him feel a cold tingle of rejection anyway. With a huff, she stood.
“We’re the only ones in the freakin’ place, you don’t need to call it “Order 62”, you know what’s in it, Jesus Chr-” The moment she pulled up to the counter, a huge, empty smile replaced her huffy frown. “Thank you so much! You have a good night!”
When she came back with the order, Lin chuckled at the sight of two McFlurries and 20 chicken nuggets this early in the morning.
“It’s protocol,” he smiled.
“What’s protocol?”
“Announcing the order.”
“Oh, right, you used to work in one of these!” She was smiling again.
“Yup. It’s a hard job, I feel bad for her.” He chuckled, reaching out to grab his Oreo McFlurry off the table.
“So do I, but it doesn’t have to be protocol to ruin a good moment.” She bit into a chicken nugget a little aggressively.
Her comment made him freeze immediately and over think her phrasing. A good moment. He had touched her and she thought it was a good moment. His brain went into over drive and in his confusion, he brought the McFlurry to his mouth and tried to use the hollow spoon as a straw.
“For someone who used to work here, you sure don’t know how to use the utensils.” She was grinning, bursting out into peals of laughter as he blushed, quickly pulling away from the spoon and grabbing it with his hand.
“You never saw that,” Lin warned, pointing the spoon full of ice cream at her, as she burst into more laughter.
“If you think I’m ever forgetting that you used a spoon as a straw, you’re insane.”
That comment sparked a full on discussion on each other’s embarrassed moments, from the time she wore a dress backwards for the whole day to their drunk shenanigans from only a few days before. It quickly evolved into a game of challenges that were bound to lead to lunacy, but it didn’t matter.
“It’s going to fall.”
“Not if we build it from bottom to top with the creams at the bottom, they’re heavier.” Lin was concentrating very hard at trying to balance a sort of pyramid of half and half creams that were found at the foot of their table. (Y/N) had challenged the both of them to build a house out of the materials around them and it was going badly, very fast.
“You’re a genius, okay, I’ll go get more creams and some straws for the walls.” She sent him a delighted grin and rushed away to fill her hands with the free McDonald’s paraphernalia at a small side counter, ignoring the tired looks from the employee.
“You can’t use that!” Lin pointed.
“Of course I can, just because you didn’t have enough sugar packets to build yours doesn’t mean I can’t do it!”
He made a vocal ‘hmph’ sound, but seemed to grin anyway. Within minutes, the house-building competition devolved into a sort of clean food fight, with many sacrificed coffee creams and packets of sugar lost to become projectiles to whip at one another with McFlurry spoons. It was the youngest, most innocent moment Lin had witnessed in a long time, and it filled him with an incomparable warmth.
As the both of them ran out of ‘ammunition’, their laughter was hard to control. Lin had his hand over his chest as she covered her mouth with both hands, their stomachs hurting in the best way possible. The mess on the table was hilarious just to look at, the attempts of building, well, whatever they were building, completely knocked over.
He cocked an eyebrow at her over the mess of the table, a flitting glance proving his theory. Their exhausted employee had retreated to the back, perhaps for prep work. Standing up, he offered a hand to (Y/N) silently, a slow grin finding a home on his lips. She stood, just as mute as he was, with a curious light in her eyes as she silently questioned his purpose. With her hand wrapped gently in his, he tugged her closer, finding a place on her waist for his other palm.
“What are you doing?” She whispered, eyes half-lidded and happy.
“Teaching you to dance.” He replied, the brightness of his grin shining fully.
“There’s no music,” (Y/N) bit her lower lip, holding back a giggle. Lin was sure his heart stopped for a second.
“We don’t need it.”
He waltzed the girl of his dreams delicately, softly, as if he believed holding her too tight would result in a hard pinch and the realization that this was not reality. Her warmth and the solidarity of his own presence grounded him, however, and soon, the pressure of his hands increased just slightly, less afraid that she would float away.
“If you’re gonna teach me how to dance, Lin, you better teach me how to salsa or something. I can waltz okay, but salsa? I only do that with chips.” She shot him a grin and he emitted a dramatic groan at the cheesy joke, but smiled anyway.
“(Y/N), the question is, are you ready for the salsa?” He teased, raising an eyebrow.
“You tell me.”
It only took a split second for Lin to spin her in his arms, pulling a squeal from (Y/N), his skilled hands grabbing hers as he made a head motion for her to look at his feet. One step after the other, front, middle, back, middle and again. Lin laughed as she slowly got the rhythm right, his hands doing the same movement without letting go of hers.
He was right, they didn’t need any music. The way he started to move was effortless, spins, turns, whirls, a twist here and there, and he started to grow more and more confident, as did she. A grin curving his mouth up, he spun away from her and hopped up on the table, reaching out to execute a quick lift as she half-stepped, half-floated up onto the linoleum dining table. She laughed, head thrown back, at their ridiculousness, and it made his heart swell with fondness. They kept a rhythm going, smoothly at that, with his hands going to her waist every few seconds for guidance and solidarity, and her gaze meeting with his after every turn. In her eyes, he saw an unparalleled trust that he had understood was one of a kind. She was right, there wasn’t anyone in the world like them.
Lin lost track of time as they spun each other around, but a stranger’s uncomfortable voice cut through their temporary bubble.
“Sir, ma’am, um...could you get off the table please?” The exhausted employee was back - Jaqueline? Jennifer? Lin couldn’t read her nametag from that far away.
He shot her an apologetic smile. “Sorry. Got a little carried away. We’re out of your restaurant, promise.”
“Sorry about the sugar packets. And the cream. And the dancing, and the-” (Y/N) babbled, a bit nervous in her apology.
“And the all of it, is what she means. Have a good night…morning.” He smiled, to which Jaqueline-Maybe-Jennifer smiled back. Lin dropped down from the table and held a hand up to (Y/N), which she took with a grin.
With a paper bag of cold chicken nuggets in one hand, and a couple half-melted McFlurries in the other, Lin had never felt so alive. Their pace slowed as they returned to (Y/N)’s sorry excuse of a car, a sort of exhaustion that was unique to salsa dancing at 5 a.m setting into his body.
In the car, Lin leaned back with a deep sigh, eyes closing momentarily as a wave of tiredness swept over him. She mirrored his movement, letting out a laugh instead. “We really did that.”
Lin chuckled, biting his lip. “We did.”
As his eyes opened, he realised that (Y/N) was watching him, the shadow of a smile on her face.
“Why are you looking at me?” He asked, half a nervous laugh bubbling up from his chest.
“You look tired.”
“I am.”
“Too tired to go to the bridge and finish our McDonald’s?”
He grinned at that. “Never.”
The streets were no longer deserted as they drove to the Fort Lee Historic Park. The car windows were open, letting in the last traces of the night breeze as Lin changed the cassette tape. Tears on my Pillow by Little Anthony, started playing.
“You did not just put on the valentine’s day mixtape you made me last year,” she gave him a quick look when they stopped by a red light.
“It was the only one that didn’t have songs that we sing along too often,” he shrugged.
“You underestimate how many time I’ve listened to these mixes, Lin,” (Y/N) replied, shooting him a grin as she started to sing along.
He paused for a moment and just stayed still, struck by her beauty and lost in awe. She listened to the mixes he made her. She listened to the mixes he made her. His heart burst with a wonderful warmth and it spread to place a grin on his face that just wouldn’t go away. She was all kinds of light.
“You’re unbelievable,” Lin’s voice was only a bit louder than a whisper, his thoughts slipping out of his lips before he could filter them, but it was enough to grow a smile on her face. He didn’t notice.
Fort Lee was one of the places Lin and (Y/N) grew up visiting. From play dates when they were just kids to their escapades from class during high school, the park became their not-so-secret place. The parking lot facing the GWB were their favorite spot and now, there was no better place to be but there. The path to the spot was well-known by the two, and the emptiness of the park due to the early hours made it look like a dream. It was home.
(Y/N) threw the rattling car into park and sent him a huge grin, ducking out of the car without waiting for him. Besides, she knew Lin would follow, and follow he did, with a quickly melting McFlurry still grasped in his hand. She pulled herself up onto the hood of the car and then half-hopped, half-pulled her way into the roof, turning to beckon to him with a smile. He followed in her wake, setting himself down at her side as the sky started to bleed orange. The sun was coming up.
“I don’t think we ever came here this early,” (Y/N)’s eyes were taking in the view, the sun slowly coloring New York City in tones of orange and yellow, the concrete jungle looking more like a home than ever.
“It really puts things in perspective.” Lin was mindlessly playing with the plastic spoon, his attention on his best friend instead.
“What do you mean?”
“I’m scared, (Y/N),” he simply said, his voice not showing how nervous he felt. “I’m… I’m a substitute teacher. We graduated college, came back to New York and now…now what?”
“You’re a writer. Substitute teacher is just what you’re doing to pay the bills,” her eyes met his and a smile appeared on her face.
“I-I know,” he breathed out, leaning back as the space between them closed slightly. His thigh brushed hers. “But I don’t know if I’ll ever make it past the “paying the bills” excuse. What if I get stuck? What if I go from substitute teaching to just teaching, and then there’s never any time to write, then that turns into regret, and for the rest of my life I have to-”
“You are an artist.” (Y/N) interjected gently, hand reaching out to rest on top of his as a silent means of support. “And a damn good one at that. I know you, Lin. You have ambition, and drive, and oh my God, so much stubbornness that it would be impossible for you to let yourself go on teaching. When your career-”
“If, my career.” He interrupted, smiling softly.
She cocked an eyebrow at him with a huff. “When, your career starts to take off, I will be right there to say “I told you so”. I promise.”
Lin was still smiling, but it had grown into a grin as her words washed over him. “God, you’re wonderful, I don’t know where I would be without you.”
“Probably getting a healthy amount of sleep and not on top of my crappy car at 6 a.m.” She grinned.
“Yeah, probably.” He laughed, elbowing her side gently. “You know I’m gonna be here when your career explodes, right?”
She snorted. “What career?”
“No, (Y/N), I’m serious. Everything you put your mind to gets done. You have this jack of all trades talent that makes me burn with jealousy, but also want to stand up and cheer you on. You are going to have an awesome life.”
“Yeah. Our future’s gonna be pretty great, huh.” Lin froze with a mouthful of his McFlurry on its way to his mouth. “Ours?”
“Yeah, ours. We’re sticking together, you and me. Just us against the world.” She smiled at him, and a thousand butterflies erupted in his stomach.
They fell silent after that, and the sky started to morph from golden oranges to a pink that stretched all the way across the horizon. Birds started to sing their good morning’s from the trees. Lin knew, better than anything, that if he was going to say something, he had better say it now.
“You know, if we were in one of those cheesy movies, this is where I’d kiss you.” He half-joked, nervousness taking hold of his heart with a cold grasp.
She chuckled before biting her lower lip. “Yeah, definitely. But we’re not in one of those movies.”
“Right, right, yeah. Of course.” Lin faked a smile, his gaze now on the melted ice cream in his hands.
“This is a modern romantic comedy. I think the girl would kiss the guy instead.”
Her words took a few moments to sink in, his hundreds of miles per hour thoughts stopping once her hand delicately touched his cheek. She closed the distance slowly, and if time hadn’t stopped before, it certainly did now. Lin’s hands went to wrap, slowly, around her waist, his thumb moving in soothing circles against her back. It was less so to comfort her than him, as he was sure anyone within a five mile radius had to hear his heart pumping so loudly. As his eyes closed, something in him seemed to switch and all he was focusing on was the feel of her in his arms, the way it felt like everything was just right as she kissed him, the warmth and realness of her presence. His every thought was floating but every part of his body was on fire. As she pulled away, eyes half-lidded, her lips curved to turn into a smile. Foreheads resting against one another, Lin closed his eyes for a moment to compose himself before breaking out into a huge grin.
There was a pause before she took in a breath and let out waves of laughter, eyes shut up as she held her stomach. Before long, he was laughing too and she took hold of his hand, fondly tracing shapes into it.
“I can’t believe it took me that long to kiss you,” she huffed, still trying to catch her breath.”Been wanting to do that for awhile.”
He stared at her in disbelief, unable to comprehend that the person he had secretly loved for so long actually returned his feelings. “You have no idea how many times I considered telling you that I...that I-”
“I love you.” She smiled.
He breathed out. Finally, he thought. “I love you so much.”
Her smile was the most wonderful thing he had ever gotten the pleasure to witness. The sunrise was nothing compared to the way her eyes lit up at the sound of his voice saying the words she waited for so long to listen.
This time around, his hands were the ones to bring her closer, the kisses going on and on and on. At one point, it stopped feeling like they were making up for lost time: instead, they were a promise to the future.
The sun made its way up into the sky, and Lin realized that 5 a.m phone calls weren’t so bad.
Gilbert Mosby, The ‘Konjola King,’ Was Cincinnati’s Other Prohibition Millionaire
When an expensive house hits the Hyde Park real estate market, it is hardly news.
Even so, the big old pile on nine acres along Erie Avenue caused a bit of a stir when it found a buyer for more than $3 million in June of this year. Thoroughly renovated, the three-building estate is a gem for sure, and it has an interesting back story.
The house was built in 1927 by a man named Gilbert H. Mosby and it was designed to impress visitors as a testament to a real rags-to-riches story. Less than a decade before he built his mansion, Mosby had a factory job on Pearl Street, churning out a cure-all potion sold as “Vola Tonic” for a company known as Vola Remedies.
In 1921, Mosby married a young lady (he was 34, she was 18) named Roberta Epperhardt, and incorporated his own tonic manufactory, the Mosby Medicine Company, to produce an elixir sold as “Konjola.”
Tumblr media
It’s difficult to determine, exactly, what went into proprietary nostrums like Konjola and Vola Tonic. It is impossible to tell if Mosby developed his own formula or whether he stole or adapted a recipe from Vola Remedies. Roberta later claimed Konjola was her idea. Mosby claimed Konjola would cure nervousness, indigestion, rheumatism, neuritis, catarrh, constipation, stomach trouble, general weakness, kidney problems and liver dysfunction. We know Konola had lots of herbs. It also had the secret to Mosby’s success in this Prohibition era – lots of alcohol. According to Charles Westheimer, writing in the Cincinnati Historical Society Bulletin [Fall 1976]:
“Mosby was popularly known as the "Konjola King” for the name of the patent medicine he manufactured on Reading Road and sold all over the United States. It was a vegetable concoction with a high alcohol content that could be sold without prescription and gave comfort to many who could not or would not find a bootlegger to ease the strictures of prohibition.”
Konjola sold like bathtub gin in the Roaring Twenties. Gilbert and Roberta started Mosby Medicine by mixing up tubs of Konjola in their basement and bottling it themselves. By 1927, Mosby owned a factory on Reading Road in Avondale and was planning an even bigger complex up the road. Mosby bought a spectacular neon sign, 84 feet long and 32 feet high to advertise Konjola on the central pier of the Atlantic City boardwalk.
And then it all fell apart.
Both Gilbert and Roberta had champagne tastes and wandering eyes. He owned an outlandishly expensive Isotta Fraschini auto. She owned a lot of furs. He chased a New York showgirl named Gladys Deering. Roberta was seeing an aeronautical entrepreneur named Hugh Watson who operated what later became the Blue Ash Airport. They filed competing lawsuits for divorce in 1929 and Roberta walked away with the largest alimony ever awarded to that time in Hamilton County: $400,000.
Gilbert gave her the house and some cash to settle up. The payments sent his company into receivership and he declared personal bankruptcy in 1934.
By then, Prohibition was over and the demand for alcohol-rich tonics was waning but Mosby gave medicinal concoctions another shot and launched a new elixir named Indo-Vin, billed as “ethyl fuel for the human motor.” He also remarried at the age of 48, to 24-year-old Annie Marie Willis, a cashier at a Vine Street restaurant. The marriage was short-lived and they divorced after a couple of years.
Mosby moved west, cashing out his shares of Indo-Vin and landing an apartment on Sunset Boulevard. He created yet another medicinal corporation, now based in Hollywood, to sell his latest concoction, Van-Tage. Despite advertising endorsements by some B-string movie stars (Does Robert Woolsey ring any bells?), Mosby found himself in trouble again. This time, his opponent was the Food & Drug Administration, which ruled against Mosby in 1938, asserting that his mixture of water, glycerin, caramel coloring and some miscellaneous herbs had no medicinal effects.
Tumblr media
By now, Mosby was remarried yet again, to dancer and Hollywood model Billie Huber. On their wedding day, Mosby was 50 years old. His bride was 18. The wedding made national news because the ceremony took place in a mine hundreds of feet beneath Virginia City, Nevada. Perhaps the remote location was an attempt to evade Betty Miller, a 20-year-old singer and actress, who was suing Mosby for breach of promise.
The federal case shuttered Van-Tage and Mosby relocated back to Cincinnati, where he organized a new business in partnership with George Remus, notorious bootlegger and wife-murderer. By 1942, Remus was living quietly in Covington, operating a small contracting company when he invested in Mosby’s Gil-Jan Medicine Company. The name of the new tonic reflects Mosby’s fourth marriage, to Dallas nightclub entertainer Janet Walters.
On Wednesday, 24 May 1944, Mosby was out of the medicine business, eking out a living as a salesman for a home decorating company, and he was feeling poorly. Janet put him to bed, then left a note telling him she was leaving. Mosby awoke in the evening and wandered onto the streets, apparently looking for her.
At the corner of Fifth and Walnut, Mosby collapsed and struck his head on the pavement. He never regained consciousness and died 2 June 1944 at General Hospital. A tip to the police claimed Mosby had been blackjacked by unknown assailants in the Turf and Field Café at 532 Walnut street, but witnesses said there was no foul play; he just keeled over on the sidewalk.
Gilbert Mosby is buried in an unmarked grave at Baltimore Pike Cemetery in Fairmount. George Remus was among the eight mourners attending his funeral. His wife, who claimed she had no money to make the trip from her mother’s house in Cleveland, was not there.
Thank you to Gregory Williams for the suggestion to research Mosby and Konjola.
Story time #1- Final Fantasy & Me
At the time of this writing, the people following this sad little blog will all know me from the Final Fantasy XV community. For my first story session, I’ve decided to recount my history with the series and touch on what each game meant to me in the order that I played them. I’ll try to keep it as brief as possible, and restrict it to only the main games in the series, but I can rant for hours.
Note: I utterly failed at keeping this brief, I should have known better than to even try. To keep myself from writing a full novel in one post I’ve decided to split the story into parts. Below is the intro and memories from 7,8 and 9.
                                                  Part One
A Fangirl In The Making:
I’ve been into video games since the age of about 5 when my dad would regularly challenge me to competitive rounds of Super Mario Bros 3 for the NES. In the beginning I stuck mostly to NES, Gameboy, and N64 until Christmas of 02′ when all my begging and pouting finally came through and I was gifted with a PlayStation 2 and enough cash to purchase one game of my choice.
Oh how my parents would come to regret this decision.
The game I bought two days later was Kingdom Hearts. I’ll save my thoughts on that series for another time, but hands down this game can be pinpointed as one that permanently changed my life. What part of it changed my life? The journal, of all things. Prior to KH, I had no idea the Final Fantasy series even existed so when I encountered the Kingdom Hearts versions of FF characters, I initially started internally complaining because they were all so interesting and the game did almost nothing with them.
Then I went back about mid-way through the game and read every character entry in the journal, and was met with two obsession worthy revelations. One: All these characters were also in other games, as part of the same series no less, and two: you could make them dance by choosing to view their full models and rotating the joystick around in circles (I am very easily amused, and doing this actually spawned my first work of Fanfiction).
“So, you mean to tell me that this weird dude with gravity defying hair, one random- mostly useless-wing, and giant sword that must weigh about three times as much as he does when naked and soaking wet who won’t stop emo rambling about Darkness is in another game and I can find out more??? Sign me the fuck up!”
The Gateway Drug:
Immediately after finishing Kingdom Hearts, I took myself down to a local mall where my go-to all encompassing general entertainment store was located. While browsing the shelves for anything that caught my eye, I saw a ‘Greatest Hits’ copy of Final Fantasy VII innocently sitting there, waiting patiently for the right person to walk by so it could take them willingly down the elevator into fandom hell. I didn’t just ride that elevator, I dove headfirst down the shaft.
I shit you not, when I saw that game there I picked it up like a baby and fell to my knees, hugging it to my chest. The video games were located near the cashier counter at the front of the store, and one of the employees who had been eyeing me suspiciously since I walked in started laughing like crazy, jokingly asking if I was OK. I was still dazed and euphoric, and also completely oblivious to the fact that I was causing a bit of scene in the store. The front was plate glass, and everyone walking by also saw and a few people were starting to look concerned. Now a bit embarrassed, I sheepishly walked to the counter and set the game down. After causing a commotion I couldn’t just not buy that game now- as if I would’ve left without it anyway. The guy at the counter was still laughing as he served me. Our exchange went as follows:
“I take it you found what you were looking for”
“Dude, you have no idea”
“You won’t be disappointed. Just, a pro-tip, when you get to the part with the water and the snake, don’t waste too much time trying to fight it, get a Chocobo instead. Also, avoid the things that look like houses in sector 6, they’ll kick your ass.”
I had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, but I filed the information away, paid my 14.95 (Ah, 2003), and walked out of the store cradling the bag like someone was going to steal it from me. When I got home later I tacked the receipt on my wall to immortalize the day forever. I eventually ended up losing it (a story for another time) but I still remember the date. 05/26/03.
I loaded the game and was immediately in awe ( “It’s three discs? No wonder the case is so freaking huge!”). The opening cinematic had me from the first note of the theme, and I remember laughing SO HARD when Cloud flipped off the train and suddenly everyone was a Lego character. It took an embarrassing amount of time for me figure out how to advance the text because it was set to use the circle button for confirm instead of ‘x’, and even longer to figure out how to move because I didn’t realize you actually had to use the D-pad.
Control struggles aside, I was so enraptured by the game I didn’t stop playing that first night until the Sector 7 plate fell and yeah, those damn houses did kick my ass. When I finally got out of Midgar about two days later (I spent an excessive amount of time in the Shinra building and on the Motorcycle mini-game), I couldn’t believe that everything I just did was basically the game’s intro, and that there was still so much more to explore.
I have so many fond memories of VII that  it would be almost impossible to write them all down. Down the road it ended up pretty far from my favorite game in the series, but as the first it will always hold a special place.
You’re Hooked Now Honey, Strap In:
Between the mixed obsession of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy VII, video games quickly became one of the only things I talked about. I had thought I was obsessed before, but this took it to a whole new level of crazy. I started writing weird crack outtake reels from the games in the middle of classes, and would post little screen caps and fanart over literally everything I owned.
One day, I had out my handy outtake notebook during a bit of downtime in Honor Band (yeah, I’m a geek to the extreme), and one of my fellow trombonist’s decided it would be a jolly time to snatch the notebook out of my hands,run away with it and, start ripping the pages out and throwing them around the band room. Fortunately I had some pretty awesome friends, and they not only helped me to secure the notebook but also helped recover the missing pages. After class that day, a boy who played the trumpet shyly walked over to me and handed me back one of the pages that was still missing. He was obviously very nervous, and after handing the page back and accepting my very relieved and excited  ‘thanks dude!’ (I admit to not knowing his name at the time) he stood there awkwardly while I put away my instrument like he had something else to say but didn’t know how. I gave him a questioning look after noticing he hadn’t walked out yet and as I picked up my bag he followed after me into the hall. After a little while he finally fell into step beside me and asked, “so, you like Final Fantasy huh?”
I don’t care how long I’ve known you, if you ask me about Final Fantasy you better be prepared to a.) Become my new best friend and b.) let me talk your ear off about for as long as you’re willing to sit and listen. I talked with my new friend until we had to part ways for different classes, and then later at lunch when he asked to join me and continue the conversation. I tell this story because a few months later, this same boy bought me a copy of Final Fantasy VIII and asked me to be his girlfriend. A damn diamond wouldn’t have worked better.
Final Fantasy VIII was a bit of a mixed bag for me. Once again I was already hooked by the game’s opening, and the cinematic introductions of all the characters gave it an unexpected charm right from the start. That game eventually got very, very, veeeery, strange and I eventually stopped trying to make any sort of sense of the plot line and just sat back and enjoyed the ride.
That is, until I got to the end of disk 3. I found myself horribly stuck on the battle with Adle where she has Rinoa captured. No matter how many times I tried it, I would get her down to the final phase and she would either Ultima wipe the party or Rinoa would die. I gave up on the game for a while, sick of the frustration, until I came across a Prima Strategy Guide for it while browsing a used bookstore. I normally refuse to touch any sort of guide book until after I’ve already been through the game once on my own, but I figured it wouldn’t be much harm since I was already more or less at what I thought was the end of the game (I was wrong). In flipping through the guide, I not only learned how to beat the boss, but discovered I had been playing the entire game using the combat system completely wrong.
Somehow, I had managed to get that far in the game using only the Guardian Forces given to you at the start of the game and 2 others that you can encounter in the overworld and without stocking up on magic at all. To those familiar with VIII’s train-wreck of a combat system, you know that pairing GF’s and magic together directly effect a character’s stats- and no matter how leveled the characters are,if you don’t have the right combos of magic you have more or less no hope at most of the harder sections of the game.
So, now I had the boss strategy, but still would have been unable to beat it because I didn’t have the magic required (the strategy was to cast Regen on Rinoa to ensure she stays alive). In the end I bought the guide, scrapped the file I had been playing on and started over from scratch,this time doing all the sidequests and such in the proper order. When I got to that boss again I wiped the floor with her, and was rewarded with the game getting even weirder.
I still look back to the ending of FFVIII as one of my favorite ‘Ok WTF Just happened?!?!?!?!’ moments in media. Usually I piece together crazy stories pretty well, but even though I came to enjoy the game, I can’t say with any real confidence that I understand it at all.
Forever Touched:
There was a pause in Final Fantasy games after I finished VIII at the start of ‘04. It wasn’t until almost a year later that I received IX as a Christmas gift. I had been passing on it because I was confused and unimpressed with the cover art, but now that I wasn’t the one paying for it I was willing to give it a chance. I held off starting until New Years, because my parents were letting me have a few friends over and I wanted to have the new experience surrounded for the first time with people just as obsessed with the series as I was. Even though it didn’t have a fancy opening, it wasn’t hard to fall in love with that game. I knew from the first few lines of dialog that my heart was gone, lost forever to endearing charm of that world and it’s characters.
My friends and I were up all night with it. We had so much fun naming the characters and reading the text out loud ("Princess! It is I! The noble Betty!”).Then we all got so upset when Blank got petrified in the forest that we had to stop for the night. Right from the start, that game hit so hard in the feels.
IX became not only my favorite game in the series, but my favorite game in general. There is so much emotion, charm, and soul in that game, and it touches on so many issues that hit so close to home that I tear up just thinking about it, Back in May of this year there was a mental health awareness speed run marathon fundraiser called RPG limit break  being held on Twitch.TV, and Final Fantasy IX was the closing game. I couldn’t think of any better way to spend about nine hours in the middle of the night than to re-live the best moments of my favorite game sitting on a couch with my best friend.
Seeing everyone in the audience tearing up at crucial sections; the Black Mage Village, You Are Not Alone, the ending- made me feel less like an idiot for getting all emotional myself and my friend got to laugh at me freaking out over my favorite game cut-scene ever (The one where Alexander protects the city from Bahamut). When the game was over, the marathon had raised enough money for the runners to stand up and sing the ending theme of the game as a filled donation incentive. When the time came, not only the runners, but everyone in the room stood up to sing along. Melodies of Life, the ending theme, holds a very special place in my heart. Seeing all those people singing along, likely feeling similar things, turned me into a pathetic ball of mush. My friend laughed with me as I sang along with more tears than I think I’ve ever cried streaming down my face, and then I cried again when everyone went around saying their ‘thank yous’ to the people volunteering for the marathon and stood in lines to give each other hugs.
It was one of the most touching moments of my life; and this game was at it’s center.
Phew. Well I failed pretty hard at keeping that brief. Looks like this will end up as a series of sorts.  Tune in next time for adventures with Final Fantasy 6/3, X, X-2, and XII
~~ YOUR P.O.V~~
I drove out of the neighborhood to our local supermarket after leaving the boys at the house alone. I rolled the window down and let the cold fresh spring air hit my face. Finally, I parked a block or so away from the supermarket and started walking. The breeze felt so relieving on my skin, like and a pause from the world just to cool down.
I stopped.
I enjoyed the breezes for a while before it slowly faded away leaving the warm spring air to settle in. After my little moment, I started to walk again when a hand grabbed me wrist and spun me around to where I bumped into someone. I tried to back away to see who I bumped into but he gripped my waist and head to where it was hard to go anywhere. Then I felt something go by, fast like a car and I grabbed onto the man that was holding me tight in fear of getting hit. When all the cars stopped he walked me to the other side of the road; I was being dragged behind the man so I couldn't see his face right away but, something about him was familiar.
When we got back to the sidewalk he turned around and hugged me. " ah Monique I can’t believe you did something that stupid " His voice I've heard it before the same smooth cotton candy voice that used to greet me every day after school, that same voice that was just a blurry memory until this moment. I pushed back only enough to see his face "Changsoo?" I asked looking at the man before me.
“Hey Monique how you been?" he gave me one of his old warm smiles, oh how I missed it so much.
" CHANGSOO " I squeaked jumping into his warm embrace again.
NEW CHARACTER
Tumblr media
Name: Choi ChangSoo
Age:25
Met you his junior year of college
NOT your boyfriend
Is like your Korean brother
Is almost always there when you need him
_____________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________
"Oh, My gosh Monique how can you just walk into traffic like that? You’ve gotten quite careless" ChangSoo scolded me and poked my forehead teasingly
“ChangSoo when did you get back from America" I shouted hitting his  chest a couple of times
“Well," he paused and let go of me” I got back same day my sis left to meet the family, and I wanted to go home to see her."
I was going to hit him again be then I realized that family ALWAYS come first so I couldn't get mad of course. Like I would in the first place
“hey that's okay don't seem all guilty about it, You should have seen your family first, that's always the right chooses" I reassured him
ChangSoo went away to America a year ago for an oversea modeling job, and it was very hard for him to get in contact with his family. When he could get in touch is was only for a short time, then it back to whatever models do. So, I could understand why he went to his family first, but he could have still called me or texted me or something.
"So how is the whole modeling thing going for you so far," I ask him as we start walking to my destination.
“Oh yeah it been nice, we just got done with a spring runway, and we got to take a two-week break."
" well that's good I hope I get to see the photo book one day" I giggled as we keep chatting and walking, I was so happy to see him because he was always there for me when I need him and that car incident just proved my point.
~~~
We were a block away to the supermarket when he asked me where we are going “supermarket” I simply answered. After a few more minutes we were there, I asked if he needs anything from here and he said he would just stay to help me with the grocery. Changsoo was such a gentleman in my eyes and so caring, it makes me laugh because when he left, we all made fun of him for leaving since he left us without a goodbye. We called him rude, uncaring, and selfish just out of anger, but we never really meant it. We just had to fill ourselves with any other feeling than sadness, and being mad like that made us happy. It was so ridiculous that we had to laugh at it, and it's still funny to this day, two years of laughing at ourselves.
"good times" I whispered to myself grabbing milk from the freezer. I was so immersed in my thoughts that I didn't even notice I was putting my stuff in the wrong shopping cart.
"YAH ARE YOU CRAZY WHAT ARE YOU DOING" a lady that looked like she was in her early 30 yelled at me taking the milk out of her cart and slammed it into my chest.
“I’m so sorry I wasn't paying attention" I apologized several times and bowed several times before she let with a disgusted look on her face. When she left I let out a loud sigh of relief and annoyed look. ”dramatic much. It was just milk.”
I looked around for my cart that was right next to me. I shook my head feeling dull, that I mixed up the carts, and went on my way to find the rest of the 'food' that I put on the note. That's when I noticed that Changsoo was not around "hmm where’d he run off to" I thought to myself as I moved forward to the eggs. Then, out of nowhere a pair of hands grabbed my shoulder and started to shake me. Due to these actions, I let out a high pitched yelp before stumbling backward and tripping over a bump of some sort. I was so sure that my butt would be having an unexpected visit to the floor, but it didn't.
(Changsoo P.O.V)
I notice Monique was in her own little world, so I took this opportunity to play a little prank on her. I snuck away trying to find someone to help me. I saw this lady the look like she was in her late 20's that look nice enough to help me out for a while.
“Umm ma'am" I cooed tapping her on the shoulder
“Yes, young man" she smiled then I knew that I could ask her for this favor. I told her the plan then she goes over to my friend and whatever she does to just yell at her. She was all in for it, and so the plan went into action. The lady stood behind Monique and waited, she looked over to me to make sure she got the right person; I gave her the thumbs up telling her that she did. "This is going to be great" I whispered to myself with an evil smirk. Then, it happened she turned around and put her milk in the wrong buggy
"YAH ARE YOU CRAZY WHAT ARE YOU DOING" the lady flipped shit, it was too funny and then to top it all off Monique went to bow and apologizing like an idiot. She was so cute when the lady left Monique was looking around for something when she saw her cart right next to her, she shook her head and continued to walk on her own like nothing happened but ole' Changsoo would not let her live this down.
The lady came back and asked if she did a good job, I told her that she did a perfect job. She had to go after, but that was okay. I went over to Monique who was looking over to the eggs, and when I got close to her, I shook her by the shoulder. She screamed and stumbled backward, to prevent her from falling I wrapped one of my arms around her waist and my other arm one her shoulder. When I look at her, her eyes were closed  "Mo... are you okay" I whispered to her. Her eyes fluttered opened. There was a pause.
"YAH ARE YOU CRAZY? DON’T DO THAT TO ME.... gosh I almost got hurt because of y.....  ARE YOU LAUGHING"
It was true I was trying so hard not to laugh at her outburst, but I guess it was just too noticeable. She was so mad, but it was okay cause I know that she wouldn't be upset for long, but while she is already heated I might a well and some fuel to the fire, right?
“Yes I'm laughing" I started giggling
"WHY'' she shout
“Well... First, calm down we are in a place of business young lady."
"Fine."
“Okay, that woman that yelled at you just a minute ago was all a part of my prank on you, and it was so awesome, right."
It was silent for a long time, and she just started at me while I giggle away at her with a blank expression. My snickering died down as I felt a bit awkward just standing there. She did utter a word but, just turn on her heels and began walking again. Soon, after trailing behind her the harsh feel of guilt crept into my heart, I didn't expect this reaction from her. My conscience was at battle with the sin I felt I have created upon myself, gosh who knew she would do this cause I sure didn't. I deiced to see if she was okay.
" Mo, I'm sorry I just was just playing, but I didn't know that you would be this upset or...are you... well that not the point, the point is that I'm sorry, and I hope that you can forgive me" I mumbled on hope she would forgive me, but I still didn't get a response. "Oh .well," I thought” She'll hopefully forgive me soon in tim.." my thoughts came to a sudden halt as I saw Monique stop. She turns to me with her head down " Monique' I whispered then, she began to speak.
“Never.... never in my three years of staying here have i....sighed" she lifted her head and looked me in the eyes. Her head tilted, and she bit her lip. Suddenly tears peaked from the brim of those deep brown eyes.  My heart cringed. She let go of her bottom lip and took a deep breath" Have I ever seen someone older than me speak in such a formal way" She doubles over in laughter; her whole demeanor changed catching me off guard and caused me so much confusion. As I stood there like an idiot just staring at her with a confused expression, she laughed at me just like I did to her.
“Oh how the tables are turned" she giggled patting me on the shoulder and walking away again
Then I realized that I still have the same warm friends that I left "thank god" I thought and continued to follow Monique around the store.
After about ten more minutes she had everything she needed, and we were off to the checkout center. The male cashier was a bit rude to Monique in my eyes, but Monique didn't seem to be affected by his behavior, so I guess it would be better than causing a scene my first two days back in Korea
"Something just needs to be ignored," I thought as we left. I took one more look back at the cashier, and he looked at Monique, and I like we stole something. I delivered that same look of annoyed suspicion right back at the jerk, what the hell is his problem.
(Your P.O.V)
  The drive back to my place was fun, we laughed about old times, caught up on new times, jammed to some music, I even invited him to a tour of the new house.  Everything was going well until I remembered that I had five boys at my house. I started to panic in my head as we got closer to my house, I had to think of something to say and fast. When we got to my front door, I stopped and turned to Changsoo, taking a deep breath so I could tell him as quickly as could.
“umm... listen my friends are here and umm I would like you to come in... but I don't want you to think less of me because of these friends. They came on very short notice and ...umm. THERE JUST FRIENDS AND I haven't seen them in a while and umm well the point is, don't think about this as weird or something I just wanted to help them and well yeah" wow I was babbling on for at least 2 minutes, I was just so worried that he would think low of me. Who wouldn’t be suspicion of one female in a house with seven other males?
"Hey hey it's okay you don't have to be worried I'm not staying for a long time ill just help you put the grocery up,  tour this beautiful house and I'm out okay" Changsoo assured me as he motioned me to open the door. I was very shaky when I opened the door, but I soon got it opened after a moment. When we walked in Mark came out of nowhere and attacked me with a big hug swaying me back and forth making me drop the bag of food I had and make it harder for me to breath. When he let go me, he gripped my shoulders, shaking me lightly.
“gosh Monique, WHY ARE YOU LATE, I was so worried..." he stopped mid-sentence, and that's when I knew he had notice Changsoo behind me probably glaring at him. Mark let go of me and cleared his throat putting his head down and walking up to Changsoo. I was too afraid to turn around to I just put my head down, bit my lip and hoped for the best.

Target raised wages but some workers say their hours were cut, leaving them struggling
Two years ago, Target said it would raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour by the end of 2020. The move won praise from labor advocates and put pressure on other companies to also move to $15.
But some store workers say the wage increases are not helping because their hours are falling, making it difficult to keep their health insurance and in some cases to pay their bills.
CNN Business interviewed 23 current and former Target employees in recent months, including department managers, who say hours have been scaled back even as Target has increased starting wages. Many of these workers say the cuts, which come as Target’s business is in its strongest position in more than a decade, have hurt them financially. CNN Business agreed to withhold the last names of several of the current employees and the city where their store is located so they could speak freely.
“I got that dollar raise but I’m getting $200 less in my paycheck,” said one, Heather, who started in November at a Florida store working around 40 hours a week. She’s now below 20 some weeks, she said. “I have no idea how I’m going to pay rent or buy food.”
Hours for workers in retail are notoriously unpredictable and often depend on the season or how well stores are performing. In the retail industry, the average hourly workweek has dropped for employees this year compared with a year earlier, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Beyond just a drop in earnings that Target workers who spoke with CNN Business have experienced, employees who average fewer than 30 hours of work a week during the year aren’t eligible to qualify for health insurance benefits through the company during annual enrollment season in the spring. Target offers health insurance benefits to eligible employees who average more than 30 hours a week, according to the company. Target does not publicly disclose other requirements to qualify for health insurance benefits.
“Target worked me hard from mid-July of 2018 to February 2019, right before my medical coverage was about to kick in,” said Caren Morales, a former Target employee in Diamond Bar, California. She was averaging around 35 to 40 hours a week, she said, and got a letter from the company in February with information about how to sign up for health insurance benefits.
“They cut my hours right then, and so I begged for hours and always went above and beyond.” She quit in May after her hours plummeted to as little as 15 a week.
“I called in on May 1 and said, ‘I can’t come in today or ever again because I can’t afford my daughter’s daycare. You guys cut me really bad,’” Morales said.
A spokesperson for Target would not address specific employee records such as Morales’ but did confirm that the store she worked at slightly decreased its payroll and workers’ hours from 2018 to 2019.
Michael, a veteran Target worker in Texas, told CNN Business he is “right at the cut off point currently” to qualify for health benefits.
He averages 20 to 30 hours a week, down from up to 40. He found a second job because his hours at Target fell. “I’m hoping going to Christmas will keep me at the average needed [for health insurance], but at this rate who knows?”
In response to this story, a spokesperson for Target said that existing staffers are working this year, on average, “approximately the same number of hours as they were last year” and the year prior and slightly more than they were three years ago. Target also said that the company’s mix of full-time and part-time workers has remained consistent over the past few years and the percentage of existing hourly workers eligible for health insurance has remained steady. However, Target declined to provide numbers for each of these points.
‘Modernization’
Target workers who say their hours have dropped have been given a variety of reasons why by their supervisors, including that there were not hours available or that their managers couldn’t fit additional hours in their budgets. Others said they received no explanation for why their hours fell.
In some cases, existing Target workers say their hours have declined as their stores brought on new employees or their assignments changed.
Target has overhauled operations at its 1,850 US stores in recent years to create more specialized positions for staffers, who now often focus on a single department, instead of the entire store. Target also eliminated backroom shifts at some stores. Backroom teams used to unload boxes and make sure inventory was in stock, but Target moved some of those employees to the sales floor. The new model is known as “modernization.”
Target says it changed its operating procedures in an attempt to improve customer service, make stores capable of fulfilling online orders and improve productivity.
“We knew we couldn’t operate the stores anymore in the same fashion we had for the last 20, 30 years,” Target COO John Mulligan told CNN Business in an interview for this story. “We needed to change the way we operate in the store to create a better, more inviting experience for our guests.”
Target acknowledged that, as part of its store operations overhaul, it has shifted some payroll hours from the mornings and daytime hours to nights and weekends to match customer demand. That has impacted some workers’ schedules, Target said, although it said it has added millions of payroll hours in recent years.
However, several Target leaders in stores say workers’ hours at their stores are falling.
One former store director in Ohio who oversaw around 130 employees said hours dropped at the store in the past year for several reasons, including the introduction of self-checkout and elimination of backroom shifts.
“Older cashiers were used to getting 30-some hours and they were getting less and less,” the former store director said. “They really cut those hours back from them with the introduction of self-checkout.”
A department leader at a Target store in Oklahoma who spoke on the condition of anonymity said “we get fewer hours as a store.”
Target is cutting payroll hours in his store, despite sales growth at both his store and across the chain, he said. “Most of long-term team members have left,” he added.
“Some workers who had open availability were only getting four or six hours,” said Jack, a former department leader in Colorado. He said he had never seen hours drop that low for employees with open schedules prior to modernization.
Chelsey, a Target department leader in Washington state, said her department has been adding new employees, cutting into existing workers’ hours.
“Hours have been cut because I have to add more people,” she said.
Adding staff
Target has been adding workers to help it keep up with growth. It has hired more than 35,000 new workers over the last two years and has approximately 360,000 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees, according to its latest annual securities filing. Those numbers often fluctuate during the course of the year, a spokesperson for Target said.
“The company keeps hiring more and more people part time,” said Lee Beecher, a Target staffer in Santa Clarita, California, and a member of United for Respect, a workers’ advocacy group. Beecher, who has worked at Target for more than four years, said his average hours have dropped, leading him to look for other work. “I’m a loyal employee. I’m trying to pick up a second job for the hours I’m not getting at my current job,” he said.
Beecher’s hours are volatile, he said. He averaged 20 to 30 hours a week in the spring, but his hours have picked up recently in the run-up to the holidays. He expects them to drop again after the holiday rush fades. “They fluctuate a lot. It’s not fair.”
A spokesperson for Target said the overall payroll hours at Beecher’s store have increased more than 7% year-to-date. Target declined to say whether the average hours for employees at the store has increased this year.
Desire, a Target worker in Virginia, said she used to take home around $800 every two weeks from Target when she worked up to 40 hours a week. Today, after her hours were reduced, she’s making half that. “It’s frustrating because they hired four more people. We’re begging for hours.”
Target has said it plans to hire more than 130,000 temporary employees for the holidays, around an 8% increase from last year. Target picks up around a third of its revenue during the holiday stretch and needs additional help during peak season, according to the spokesperson.
Retailers often want to have a larger pool of part-time workers making the minimum wage, instead of a smaller group of full-time staffers with benefits and guaranteed hours, said Lonnie Golden, professor of economics and labor relations at Penn State University-Abington.
This strategy gives companies more flexibility to adjust workers’ schedules based on store demands and helps them labor costs, Golden said.
It’s often cheaper for retailers to employ part-time workers, rather than full-time employees, because health insurance costs are going up, because full-time workers get more paid time off and because, if there is extra work on short notice full-time workers would likely become eligible for overtime premium pay for additional hours they work above 40 a week, Golden said.
A spokesperson for Target said this was not the company’s strategy and stressed that Target’s mix of full-time and part-time workers has remained consistent over the past few years and the percentage of existing hourly workers eligible for health insurance has remained steady.
Pay raises
Target has gradually increased wages since its 2017 announcement. Target raised its starting wage to $11 an hour in 2017 and then to $12 an hour last year. Target then bumped it to $13 an hour in June.
Yet if Target cuts back hours for some workers as it raises wages, “most workers aren’t getting any more of what they really need,” noted Heidi Shierholz, who was chief economist at the Labor Department during the Obama administration.
As Tony, a Target worker in Pennsylvania, told CNN Business, a higher hourly wage “really doesn’t help much when [I’m] only doing 20 to 30 hours a week.”
He used to average 37 to 40 hours a week when he started in 2017, he said, but he’s struggling to make ends meet on his current schedule. He has been buying most of his food at his local dollar store and asking his mom for help paying bills. Because he’s older, he worries he won’t be an attractive candidate for other jobs.
Other current and former employees say the cuts to hours have disrupted stores and hurt morale.
“I was working 38 hours and out of nowhere they just cut my hours to 22,” said Victor Hanousek, a former Target store worker in Bloomington, Minnesota. Hanousek said he worked at Target for a year, but quit in June because of the cuts.
A spokesperson for Target said that payroll hours at Hanousek’s store have increased more than 7% year-to-date. Target declined to say whether the average hours for employees at the store has increased this year.
“A lot of loyal team members have left because of the hours being cut drastically,” said Juan, a Target employee in Michigan. His hours dropped from around 30 a week for a year to 19 in June, he said. “There just aren’t any hours available for my department.”
Another, Andrew, who works at a Target store in Maryland, put it simply: “How are we supposed to be enthusiastic and happy if we’re only working 19 hours a week?”
It’s not just Target
Target isn’t the only retailer where some workers say their hours have declined.
Retail employees at “general merchandise stores” such as Target worked an average of 28.5 hours in August, compared with 30 hours a week in August of 2018, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Close to 30% of America’s more than 15 million retail workers worked fewer than 35 hours a week last year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nationally, 17% of workers work below 35 hours a week.
At Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, around 40% of the workforce is part time. Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said recently that the company has been increasing its share of full-time positions.
Although part-time jobs can give workers flexibility, many part-time workers say they want more hours. 69% of part-time Walmart workers said they would prefer to work full-time, according to employees surveyed last year by two workers’ advocacy groups, the Center for Popular Democracy and United for Respect.
In the retail industry, there were 851,000 workers last year who were classified by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as “involuntary part-time workers“— that is, workers who want to work full-time but can’t either because their hours were cut back or they could not find a full-time job. The rate of involuntary part-time workers in the retail and service industries is well above that in the health care, construction, manufacturing and transportation sectors.
Lawmakers are starting to respond to address erratic hours and volatile weekly pay for retail and service workers.
Cities like San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Chicago and others are passing “fair workweek” legislation. In some cases, laws require businesses to offer their existing part-time workers more hours when they become available before hiring additional staff.

By Fiona Swerdlow, Vice President, Research Director, and Claudia Tajima, Researcher
Watch Forrester’s complimentary three-part webinar series about the future of retail to learn where the retail industry is headed.
To help retailers and brands plan for 2019, I’m interviewing my Forrester peers to discover how their 2019 predictions will affect retail for our series: “Applying 2019 Predictions To Retail.”
Recently, I interviewed J. P. Gownder, VP and principal analyst on Forrester’s CIO team and an expert in automation technologies. Here’s what J. P. thinks retailers and brands should expect and focus on regarding automation in 2019.
Fiona: How do you predict automation will impact jobs in the retail industry?
J. P.: There will be job losses, but there is also a lot of transformation possible to improve both existing and new retail jobs. For example, if you include quick serve restaurants (QSRs) in the mix, McDonald’s has been the forefront of using kiosks for ordering. This technology gives restaurant workers more opportunity to focus on customers but also lowers the size of the workforce, at least in the long run. Another example is Walmart using Bossa Nova robots to automate inventory monitoring. During phase one — the experimental stage, where we are today — those retail store associates are able to focus on doing other tasks: helping customers, cleaning, or adding checkout cashiers. In the longer term, as these systems become more operationally precise, we could imagine jobs going away; think of Amazon Go, which still has human employees to do things like stocking shelves but fewer and in different roles than traditional retailers.
Fiona: What business goals are retailers supporting with automation?
J. P.: Overcoming the physical/digital divide is an overarching trend we are seeing in every vertical (see our report, “The Revenge Of The Atoms”). Retailers in general are pivoting to customer-obsessed, omnichannel experiences. This means being able to order online and pick up in-store or returning an item bought online to a store, so a lot of back-end automation — software, mostly — helps these processes. But this also changes the dynamics of inventory: There are carrying costs to stores for holding on to lots of products. Retailers are moving toward a world of short-term replenishment; instead of replenishing in bulk weekly, some are moving to a faster, even daily approach. All of these changes require automation and intelligence. (Author’s note: Please also see George Lawrie’s research on “The Three Rs Of Retail Robotics.”)
Fiona: How do you think retailers and brands need to adjust hiring priorities with automation in mind?
J. P.: Initially, the impact will be on the corporate side, where employees will need new skill sets and knowledge on how to work with these new technologies (see our robotics quotient assessment research for more). Retailers will need to hire people (e.g., omnichannel experts) who can trace theentire business process and execute the move from brick-and-mortar to something more holistic of digital and in-store. Managing multiple chains of automation — from pick-and-pack robots in warehouses to inventory monitoring and management to software bots that help execute supply chain management — will require new skills from employees.
Fiona: What challenges do retailers face in automating across different use cases in their business?
J. P.: The issue with analytics is true for anybody — you have data silos that don’t connect. You can send bots out to collect data and bring it back. For chatbots, the front ends are dumb and don’t do a great job currently. A robotic process automation (RPA) bot can sit behind a chatbot and execute certain tasks, such as taking on the role of an FAQ chatbot in the back end.
In terms of AI, look to a case study counting people in the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport bathrooms. After a threshold of people walked into the bathroom, a notification would be sent to the nearest janitor’s smart watch to accept the task and clean the bathroom. This approach lets janitorial staff keep restrooms cleaner (especially during peak times), which improved customer satisfaction and cleanliness scores. The airport used software algorithms to solve problems, and I recommend retailers think in this way, as well.
Fiona: How will the rise of startups with more digital workers than humans impact retailers?
J. P.: Imagine you are an online-only startup retailer or brand. You don’t have a physical store to manage or employees to manage. You could have a small number of employees and become a large retailer with digital labor. While there are a lot of human skills that cannot be digitized, there are definitely areas that can be automated. These startups introduce a threat to retailers, and automation cuts a huge portion of the cost it takes to become verycompetitive.
Fiona: How will automation in service desk interactions change the retail industry?
J. P.: Everyone has an IT department. RPA bots can help people in call centers do their jobs better and faster by connecting all queries in the back end to respond to problems more quickly.
Fiona: Do you have any recommendations for retailers and brands looking to invest in automation technology? What should they be looking for?
J. P.: There’s a lot going on right now with physical robotics. The questions that retailers need to ask are: How brittle are these tools — meaning, how prone are they to break while in situ? And do they function in the ways that the vendors are saying they are? In terms of AI, retailers and brands must understand the multiplicity of technologies that are out there. AI isn’t one technology; I recommend you check out Brandon Purcell’s “sense, think, and act” model and become familiar with how AI can solve problems. There is lots of value in disaggregating your knowledge of AI into actual, specific technologies — like machine learning or computer vision or sentiment analysis — and becoming familiar with what’s out there and what other businesses are piloting and implementing — including in the travel, healthcare, and financial services sectors.

Ten Jobs That Should Be Safe From Automation
This story about robots and jobs was produced by The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit, independent news organization focused on inequality and innovation in education. Sign up for our newsletter.
 Yes, the robots are definitely coming for the jobs of America’s 3.5 million cashiers. Just ask the retail workers who’ve already been displaced by automated checkout machines. Robots may also be coming for radiologists, whose expertise diagnosing diseases through X-rays and MRIs is facing stiff competition from artificial intelligence. And robots are starting to do some of the work in professions as diverse as chef, office clerk and tractor-trailer operator.
For most of us, though, the robot invasion will simply change the tasks we do, not destroy our jobs altogether. That’s according to researchers who study the impact of automation on jobs. They also note that, as the spread of artificial intelligence automates the rote parts of our jobs, it will not only force us to upgrade our skills but also free us up to take on more sophisticated tasks. Meanwhile, the education system will have to adapt by focusing on giving people the high-level problem-solving and interpersonal skills that robots may never be able to master.
Over the next decade, at least one-third of the tasks in about 60 percent of jobs could be automated, according to research by consulting firm McKinsey & Company. Globally, the firm estimates that up to 30 percent of current work hours will be automated. Less than 5 percent of jobs, McKinsey says, will disappear completely in that period. Here, we take a look at jobs that, to the extent that workforce and automation research can predict the future, will continue to depend largely on uniquely human skills, thus remaining relatively robot-proof.
The most vulnerable jobs are low-skill positions in very structured and predictable settings, such as heavy-machinery operations and fast-food work. Significant parts of white-collar jobs that involve collecting and processing information — paralegal work, accounting and mortgage origination, for example — are also likely to be automated. “The jobs that will go away are the jobs that are routine in nature,” said Joseph B. Fuller, professor of management practice at Harvard Business School. Jobs that don’t require much deviation from a central task, he noted, are the easiest to describe in an algorithm and thus prime candidates for automation.
In contrast, robot-proof jobs tend to involve tasks like decision-making and problem-solving, and require a flexible mindset and a willingness to multitask. They’re also likely to require higher education, according to a Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce analysis conducted for The Hechinger Report. “For the most part, a bachelor’s degree has a higher probability of giving you automation protection,” said Megan Fasules, an assistant professor and research economist at the center who compiled the data. “So even if my job has a degree of automation, a bachelor’s degree might allow me to have the skills to adapt to changes more easily.”
As artificial intelligence enters workplaces, many jobs will become hybrid versions of earlier jobs. Job roles and skills will mix together in new ways — forcing education programs to adapt as well. For example, Harvard’s Fuller cites the growing demand for registered nurses with specialized computer science skills. “I’ve looked all across the U.S., there is no such education program available.”
Workers in all job levels will need to keep sharpening their skills and continuing to learn, according to Benjamin Pring, co-founder and managing director of The Center for the Future of Work, a research unit funded by Cognizant, a tech services company. “If you’re a doctor, you should aim to be an even smarter doctor. If you’re a garbage collector, you should aim to be a smarter garbage collector.”
A high school teacher in New York helps a student during class. Due to its highly interpersonal nature, high school teaching ranks very low on the automation-risk scale. (The Hechinger Report/Jackie Mader)
He says that a more personalized method of education, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, may do the best job of preparing young people for the future work environment. Whereas traditional, standardized teaching models work for motivated students, they often leave less motivated or struggling students behind, he says. “A more personalized approach, where the performance of each child is improved, will create, in aggregate, smarter people who can thrive in this era in which tools and machines are smarter than ourselves,” said Pring.
But there’s only so much educators, and workers, can do now to prepare. “The notion that we can train someone in 2018 for job requirements in 2028 isn’t realistic,” Fuller said. Given the fast pace of change, job training will have to be fluid rather than static, helping people gather the skills to survive as workplaces and needs continuously evolve.

In its analysis for The Hechinger Report, the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce identified 10 robot-proof jobs, in sizable fields that pay a solid middle-class wage. The analysis was based on information from the O*NET Resource Center and the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, 2016. Job wages and details are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Best robot-proof jobs requiring a high-school degree but no college:
Automotive body and glass repairs
With a median wage of $40,580, this is among the better jobs that don’t call for education beyond high school — especially now that auto shops are well-ventilated, so that fumes and dust are dispersed. And because this job requires technical knowledge plus problem-solving and customer service skills, it has a low risk of automation.
Heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians
These mechanics inspect and repair the vehicles and machinery used in such growing fields as construction, farming and rail transportation. Employers will hire workers right out of high school, though postsecondary training is an asset. With a median wage of $49,440 and required (and robot-proof) customer service and problem-solving skills and technical know-how, the real downside to this job is that it’s tough, physical and often dirty work.
Best robot-proof jobs requiring a certification or 2-year degree:
Bus and truck mechanics and diesel engine specialists
Industry certification in diesel engine repair, or other postsecondary preparation, is strongly preferred for this job. This is physically demanding work, often in noisy repair shops, and it pays a middle-class wage of $46,360. Because this job requires the ability to troubleshoot, deal with customers and handle sophisticated technology such as engine diagnostic software, it rates low for automation risk.
Line installers and workers
Line workers install and repair electrical power systems and telecommunications cables. The job requires a high school diploma, technical certification and on-the-job training, and it can be physically demanding and hazardous. Still, because of the degree of customer interaction, complex problem-solving and critical thinking involved in the job, it is relatively automation-proof and pays $64,190 per year.
Best robot-proof jobs requiring a bachelor’s degree or more:
High school teachers
High school teachers need at least a bachelor’s degree and, to work in public schools, a teaching license or certification. The median wage is $59,170 and, with some variation by region, employment in the profession is expected to grow. While there is the big upside of summer and holiday vacations, this advantage is offset by the reality that teachers tend to work evenings and weekends grading papers and preparing lessons. Due to its highly interpersonal nature, high school teaching ranks very low on the automation-risk scale.
Occupational therapists
Occupational therapists work in settings such as hospitals and schools to help ill, injured or disabled people build the skills needed for everyday life. Demand for the jobs, which pay an average of $83,200, is increasing rapidly: Employment is projected to grow 24 percent in the next decade. This job requires sophisticated reasoning, strong communication skills and high-level problem-solving and decision-making abilities — making it an unpredictable, challenging and thus robot-proof job.
Special education teachers
Special education teachers work with students with disabilities, from preschool through high school, and earn a median annual wage of $58,980. This job requires a bachelor’s degree and a state certification or license. While some special education teachers receive summers and holidays off, many work year-round. The job’s automation-proof skills include the ability to build strong relationships with students and co-workers, modify curriculum based on students’ needs and assess students’ abilities.
Aerospace engineers

Workers must possess deep technical knowledge, critical-thinking skills and complex problem-solving abilities, among many other automation-proof skills.
Nurse practitioners and nurse midwives
Nurse practitioners and nurse midwives need a master’s degree and a state license, at minimum; they must also pass a national certification exam. The average annual wage is $110,930. As Americans age, this job sector is projected to grow a whopping 31 percent in the next decade. Because this job requires a unique and demanding combination of critical-thinking and social skills and adaptability, it ranks low for risk of automation.
Writers and authors
