I am a doll collector with BJD and buying parts or making hybrids can be a pain to color match. Just like playline dolls there’s not much consistency between brands. Some resins age differently, too.

The most reliable color matching source would probably be something like Pantone color cards, but those are FREAKING EXPENSIVE and it’s not reasonable to expect everyone to have them.

BJD collecting is an expensive luxury hobby and there are some of us that do need to keep our spending as minimal as possible.

This skintone chips set (https://www.pantone.com/products/fashion-home-interiors/skintone-guide-limited-edition) has an excellent range of skin tones, but seems to be lacking the pasty pale practically white colors a lot of Asian BJD come in and costs as much as a lower-priced BJD.

This set (https://www.pantone.com/products/plastics/the-pantone-matching-system-plastic-standard-chips-collection) seems ideal for color matching plastics, which resin is, at first but it’s polypropylene chips which will degrade in a few years, and not all colors of urethane or epoxy resins can be replicated in polypropylene. It’s also NINE THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS.

We all know I’m always looking for something functional and accessible and $9k that’s going to discolor and maybe even crumble in a decade is not my idea of accessible.

@maleficentmrsofallevil​ suggested a digital resource (https://redketchup.io/color-picker) which is free and accessible to most collectors that have an internet connection and using HEX codes is consistent across devices, however there are a few problems that we might run into.

Everyone’s monitors/phone screens and cameras would have to be calibrated exactly the same, and everyone’s lighting when making comparisons would have to be identical for this to be a viable resource. The hex chart being backlit could also skew the way it looks compared to a tangible resin sample.

That’s frustrating. Free and easy for most people to get a hold of is the ideal.

The main benefit of a physical vs digital resource for color matching is that the color sample and the doll are both subjected to the same lighting conditions, monitor settings, and camera settings so even if those factors vary between users, the comparison will still be relatively accurate.

A bunch of us sat around discussing different options. International hobby paint brands like Vallejo or Mr. Color, international makeup foundation color cards, etc. etc.

I’ve decided to give DMC embroidery floss color cards a try.

There are two versions.

One has samples of the actual floss in the book and costs about $40.

The other has printed color blocks that presumably match the floss colors and costs about $10.

DMC are sticklers for their colors being the same across dye lots. Sometimes they change the numbers on colors and sometimes they discontinue colors all together, so we do still run into the issue of whether everyone’s looking at the same color cards or different versions.

At $10, needing to replace or update the color card every few years isn’t nearly as daunting as a $9k plastic samples set falling apart in your hands once a decade.

(Can you tell I hate polypropylene when used in conjunction with dolls?)

Other variables that will affect the efficacy of using DMC color cards are the conditions under which the color cards are kept like sun exposure, temperature, humidity etc. affecting either the color of the thread samples or the quality of the printed samples.

Another factor is consistency between printed samples.

I have not received these, yet, but my plan is to first compare them to each other to see how well the printed samples match the swatched samples, and then proceed from there.

AFTER LIVING FOR SO LONG, SUNOO THOUGHT THAT HE HAD SEEN EVERYTHING.

and he held onto that idea for many years, carried it in his mind throughout the evolving centuries. out of everything he's ever owned, it was the only thing that withstood the tests of time. but the moment he found you, there was no need to question his decision before he discarded his belief.

what were words? sunoo always forgot its function when you were in the picture. even if he remembered how to use them, none would ever be enough to describe your beauty. no one would ever be able to visualize just how much sunoo craves you.

he's enamored by you, truly.

in fact, his infatuation runs so deeply in him, that seeing you upset delivers a harsh blow upon his delicate heart. you still look gorgeous, sunoo can't refute such a fact, but your color has waned drastically. had his eyes not been set on you, he would have most likely lost you to the sea of monochrome souls.

he isn't surprised to see you hide in the local park, perched upon one of the playground's swings. at first, he takes a seat on one of the nearby benches and observes you. when the streams fall to stain your cheeks, an opening is presented to sunoo. clearly, you're struggling to wipe away all of your tears, so why doesn't he lend a helping hand, hm?

the immortal carefully approaches you, handkerchief readily pulled out of his coat pocket. “here, use this.”

“thank you.” your voice is overshadowed by hiccupped breaths, but sunoo swears he can hear bells tinkling in his ears.

after you clean the physical evidence of your sadness, it seamlessly blends with a tinge of embarrassment. given the handkerchief's present state, there was no way you could give it back to its owner. you slowly raise your head to meet the stranger's eyes and twiddle with the corners of the material.

“i'm so sorry about this, i didn't realize just how much tears i had shed.”

“no, don't apologize.” he answers with a smile, one that's so bright, you thought you could have been blinded by it. “what's important, gumdrop, is that you feel better.”

“well i still feel hopeless, but i appreciate the gesture..”

“sunoo, my name's sunoo.”

“sunoo,” oh how he wishes you'd say it again, his name sounds so beautiful when it comes from you. “thank you for lending me your handkerchief.”

“like i said before, it's no problem.” he gestures to the swing next to you and asks, “may i?”

you shrug your shoulders, indicating that you don't mind, so he happily occupies the seat. silence embraces the two of you for a few minutes, before sunoo decides to make the first move again.

“before, you mentioned that you felt hopeless. may i offer a penny for your thoughts?”

“are you sure? i might charge you for more than a penny if i exceed my word limit.”

“okay then, i'll pay.”

he looks so serious, you have to swallow the breath that abruptly stuck to your throat. there's something about him—perhaps his warm demeanor, or his willingness to listen to your concerns—that has you choose to open up.

“my grandmother's in the hospital. i don't understand how it happened—we were at home, she was teaching me how to bake banana bread, and i had to step out for a few minutes to answer a call. when i get back, she's on the floor, barely hanging onto her life.”

from the tremble of your shoulders, sunoo can be sure that you're trying to suppress a fresh wave of tears. he reaches over to gently rub your back and bites the inside of his cheek when he notices you don't reject his touch. instead, you lean into the physical comfort; a reaction that he enjoys a little too much.

“at least you got her medical attention, that's something you should be proud of.” he assures you, lining it with praise. “what did the doctors say?”

“they said—well, they said that they can't help her unless they figure out what is her ailment.”  

“that's good, isn't it?”

“not if i don't have enough money to pay for the hospital expenses.” you draw out a tired breath and pick at the flaking paint of the swing's chain. “my paychecks barely got us through these past months. and now, i'm not sure it will be able to lift two people through the following days.”

and that's when sunoo spots the second entryway. well, it is certainly starting to look like for once, the fates are aligning to let him take what he wants. better late than never, he supposes.

“i can help you.”

“how?” your brows furrow slightly.

“it's simple, gumdrop. all you have to do is give me something valuable, and i shall provide your grandmother with the treatment she needs.”

“you really can do that?”

“of course, anything for you.”

you seem to take his offer into consideration, eliciting sunoo's leg to rapidly bounce while he waits. although he's usually a paragon of patience, your answer is something he must know right at this very second.

“but i just told you, i barely have any money to my name.”

“silly gumdrop, i'm not asking for any papers or metals. those are merely materialistic items. i'm asking for someone that has actual value.”

“someone, you want me to give you a person?”

“not any person—i need you.”

the silences arrives on the scene once more, but it isn't as comfortable as before. instead, it feels like its tightening its grip to suffocate you. and the only way to breathe is to say yes to his deal.

“but—no, isn't there anything else i can get for you? jewelry, branded clothing, gold?”

he shakes his head, then purses his lips into a pout. “i thought you wanted to find a cure for your grandmother, do you not want that anymore?”

“well yes, but—”

“then you shouldn't dwell on it so much. just come with me, and not only does her health get better, but so does her current living situation.”

the more times he nudges you, the more you feel that this is the right thing to do. “do you promise?”

“gumdrop, fulfilling promises are my forte. turning my back on them is not in my blood.”

“okay, i'll do it.”

“do what?” he teases, his smile glinting beneath a slightly darker light.

“i'll..” you dig your nails into your palms, indenting crescents upon your skin. “i’ll be yours.”

“perfect.”

sunoo leaves his seat to stand in front of you. he holds his hand out, which you hesitantly take. as the two of you walk out of the park, you own a quarter of your mind that wants to ask where he is leading you to. but when you notice that he seems to be in no mood to entertain questions, you keep your lips shut.

in reality, there are no proper thoughts running in his head. being so close to you has sunoo so giddy, he almost forgets that he has to reverse the curse he inflicted on your grandmother. on top of that, he must wipe your existence from everyone's mind.

...it's alright, all of that can wait. after giving everyone what they wish for, it's time for him to be selfish, and satisfy his own desire. he's almost there, he just needs to concoct one more deal with you.

this time, the only thing he'll ask of you is to get rid of your surname, in exchange for his.

WHO I AM & WHERE TO FIND ME

You can call me Lila! I've been around the Ninjago fandom since 2011 under a whole bunch of different names and accounts, with all the bizarre stories and memories to show for it. Now, though, you can find me under one of two handles: @cboffshore (here and on Twitter, where I'm not as active as I used to be) or OffshoreWriter over on AO3.

My title as Skybound Analysis PhD holder was born from a joke (initially given to me when I overanalyzed Skybound's color scheme and then Flintlocke's development in a Discord server) but grew into, well, not a joke; I take Skybound about as seriously as someone can take a toy commercial cartoon. Through all of my years in the Ninjago fandom, I've never seen a season as misunderstood and contentious as Skybound. Unfortunately, I happen to like it a lot for what it is, and I'm willing to defend it very hard (but don't get me wrong, I know it's got flaws! I'm not completely nuts!). Read this ask for a detailed overview of my position on Skybound analysis.

Outside of Ninjago overanalysis, I'm into a few other things: crocheting, the occasional piece of digital art, music (special faves include I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME, Fall Out Boy, and My Chemical Romance), and Bionicle (but only on a casual "wow cool vibes and killer writing" basis because that timeline does NOT make sense to me.).

On Sea, Sunlight, and Sky, aka OSSAS, is what I'd consider the crown jewel of my AO3 catalog: a Nya-centric series diving into her experience during the last few episodes of Skybound. Updated every December until I decide to lay her to rest (which, by the looks of it, will be the 2024 installment), this is my longest-term project that exemplifies how I approach Skybound as a season. Yours To Keep: Rethinking Skybound Through Fashion is an older project of mine that blends fashion design and Nadakhan character analysis. Sorrow is All The Rage: An Analysis of Sexual Assault in Jay-Centric Skybound Fanfiction is a two (technically, three) part essay detailing my attempts to come to terms with the (frankly rather concerning) trend of gratuitous SA inclusion in a surprising swath of popular Skybound fanfiction. (Spoiler alert: I still think it's weird as hell and I haven't come to terms with it... but I have gotten way better at using the block button to keep it out of my line of sight.) Please note: this essay is not an attack, or a condemnation, although it may come across that way at times. It’s My Little Monday! With...Gusty Character Sheet! These character sheets probably exist for most of the G1 ponies, and every so often another will pop out and float around the internet to see. The Masquerade one has already been a MLM here, so now it’s time for Gusty. She’s another fan favorite with elegant colors, and who was in the tv show a lot, which would of course help her popularity. I have a small army of her, as there are 3 official versions: Regular USA glitter symbol, non glitter EU symbol, and so soft. Of course, having a ‘reverse’ (hair colors are opposite) custom is also common. (I have reverse-custom, as well as another with magenta hair to match the leaves) The sheet has their back-card story, which is nice. In this case she’s quite season-appropriate as fall approaches but....if the leaves fall too early she puts them back up! (That sort of a thing is odd and whimsical) Notice that the sheet can’t convey her real colors, like the red is Sugarberry’s hair color which is extremely vivid, and the ‘purple’ here is actually a super bright magenta glitter. That lighter green is her eye color, the darker is the hair--which both seem true to form. It’s interesting to spot the differences of the sheet’s ink colors to the final pony. Also note that the art attempts to show the pose, but misses the mark on the front leg. The word “PMS Book” refers to the big book of Pantone colors which are numbered and every single reference (of it) in the world is always the same so that way colors can always coordinate, no-matter how they look on people’s various screens. Things like this are interesting to know.
