For fannfic writer asks:
Do you ever read your own writing for fun?
If you could erase any three tropes from existence, what would they be?
Hello! And thank you for the questions :)
Do you ever read your own writing for fun?
YES. Absolutely 100% yes! I write for myself and my own enjoyment first and foremost; I know what I like and how I like it, so it only makes sense that I enjoy reading my works, haha! It's a lot of fun!
If you could erase any three tropes from existence, what would they be?
This is a hard one to answer, because I'm a strong believer in the fact that there's no capital sins in writing -- as long as the writer knows what they're doing, anything and everything can become the foundation for a wonderful, poignant story.
That being said... there are some common tropes (particularly in romances) I'm not too fond of. Love triangles are one of those (they mostly seem childish to me, honestly), and I also don't really enjoy love at first sight (attraction yes, interest yes, but love? at first sight? definitely not my thing!). Contrary to popular taste, I'm not a big fan of enemies-to-lovers, unless there's an extensive 'friends' phase in between. So yeah, if I had to pick: love triangles, love at first sight, enemies-to-lovers. :)
Thanks again for the questions, these were a lot of fun to answer!

Carraville Rec List !
See below, self-explanatory!! I'm sure I missed some bangers, so feel free to reblog and add more, or comment. I pulled all these straight off my AO3 bookmarks list. They are ALL COMPLETE, so I didn't add any WIPSs! Please note I separated "older/classic" recs from the amazing fountain of NEW works we've been blessed with in the past 3-4 months or so. Note: IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER!
Enjoy you little dancers!!
Tumblr media
⚽️❤️ MY CLASSIC CARRAVILLE PICKS ❤️⚽️
Lockjaw by anonymous - Workplace blowjob fic that grows into a much deeper story. Sexy-with-feels MNF era Carraville. Amazing ‘show don’t tell’ characterization, top top dialogue.  Gary hiding past trauma and Jamie finding out. A crime this is anonymous, I want to read more from this author!!
the ghosts of you and me by @blindbatalex - ahhhmazingly written, MNF-era Carraville. Uses ‘snowed in’ trope to delve greater depths of a break up; old wounds, things unspoken, beautiful writing and a really pulled-back tone that aches.
the ocean and the coast by @carraville - Valencia!Gary. Jamie POV. Jamie pining. Lovely poetic style. “I have a separate plate for you.” <3 <3 <3
In Your Boots by @thesecretdetectivecollection- funny, sweet, MNF-era. SO CUTE Gary jumping to conclusions and panicking over Jamie leaving. Lots of Jamie-scenery descriptions of pretty eyes and "absurd cheekbones" and "Jamie's reliable heart" <3
keep your silver, give me that gold by @blindbatalex - MNF-era Carraville. Jamie decides to box Rio Ferdinand. Gary has SERIOUS RESERVATIONS about his beefy colleague (just colleague, no feelings, cough cough) putting himself in harms way for a stupid charity wager. Thing come to a head in a good way. Lots of verbal eye candy Carra. <3
Loss / loss / win by milleseptcent guuuuh the SCALE! The FEELS! Soulmates Carraville. Takes place from playing days to MNF-era. Gary and Carra, both without soul marks, fuck around in a casual relationship... for about twenty years. The ending is SO SWEET!
Anything That Isn’t This by @kloppend the sleeping death apocalypse fic, read if you want to ruin yourself for two or three days but ALSO the beauty of the writing is 100% worth the devastation, one of the finest written pieces in the fandom imho. HAUNTING, gorgeous, aching, amazing.
Play the Whistle by @zevons - Referee!AU Carraville!! What more do you need to know?! Gary and Jamie’s football dreams never came true, so they do the next best thing. Lovely Jamie&Stevie friendship. Enemies to lovers. So much snippy banter before they realize they are actually besties who want to smootch. FEEL GOOD but with tons of depth as well.
amunt by @carraville short, punchy, poetic = classic redandgold! Valencia!Gary, pining!Jamie. Also incredible that this was written only two weeks into Gary’s appointment, BEFORE the Barcelona loss, before things unravelled, so it’s an amazing time-capsule into the fandom in late 2015 (when they didn’t know if Gary would ever come back!)
Through fresh eyes by @aramblingjay - Jamie comes to MNF. Gary deals. Truly top-notch writing, amazing language, deft characterization. It never overindulges while remaining poignant throughout. Can be read as pre-Carraville or platonic-soulmates type friendship. It’s tagged as incomplete but it is finished. Essential reading, a classic!
Advantages of Playing Away by @zevons MNF-era testimonial blowjob in Old Trafford dressing room Carraville!! Sooo sweet, soooo hot, dialogue is sharp and funny. Just perfect <3
Remedial Exercises in Teamwork by @zevons - more saltstreets!!! HOGWARTS AU, both of them are Gryffindor beaters (so in character for them), both obsessed with quidditch. Background!gerlonso. Implied Professor Pep/Mou !!! Detention!flirting!! I mean!!! Sir Alex the owl!!! Checks all the boxes, nostalgic, sweet, enemies to boyfriends. <3
Tumblr media
⚽️❤️RECENT AMAZING 2023/2024 CARRAVILLE WE ARE BLESSED WITH ❤️⚽️
Tasting Syrup on My Tongue by @heyyjulien - PLAYERS ERA!!! Jamie and Gary have a casual relationship that gets put to the test after Jamie’s injured in a derby game. Great banter-to-feels ratio, you will want to put Julien’s sweet Jamie in your pocket and give their Gary a big hug. Great romantic closing scene where they negotiate the implications of Jamie’s injury scare. Also SCHOLESY!! <3
It’s just not what’s done by @player1064 truly a Carraville writer that ‘burst onto the scene’ as fast and furious as Micah Richards! My fave of theirs. A truly hysterical premise on the surface that they plumb deep to turn up real emotion. I love the time-jump style. Wonderful David&Gary friendship, as well as all of the Co92 rallying around Gary. Covers all eras up until today, with a January 2024 Carraville in Courcheval scene!! <3
Package Deal (It’s Valentine’s Day, ye dimwit) by @kloppinthekop My fave of their “Holiday Husbands” series. So cute and sweet and the love scene is sooooo (SOOO) hot and poignant !! Jamie taking care of Gary in every way on Valentine’s Day. Domestic feels.
Love You More by @effervescentdragon outstanding emotional excavation, Jamie POV Carraville. Uses a slightly disorienting (in a good way) jump around style that isn’t time stamped, but if you know your Carraville, you get your footing in a sentence or two. It’s a bookended journey between ‘fuck you too’ (visceral hatred) to ‘fuck you too’ (affectionate).
Gary Neville is Still a Red, Just a Different Shade by @fanficburner - your ultimate ABO Carraville! This isn’t for the faint-of-heart, angst abounds, I would not call this a romance! But a great character piece. Gary gets unwillingly bonded with Jamie, while still in love with Beckham. The standout part of this fic is the world-building and social implications of what an ABO society might actually look like; separate Omega changing rooms, registration offices for Omega registration, the harsh realities of an owned class of people.

Do you have any good Tim recs? Specifically ones that maintain his canon personality 👀
honestly this is very vague to me but I'm assuming you're mainly looking to avoid the fics that woobify him or flatten him into a coffee fueled anxiety machine. if that's what you're looking for, I gotchu
ship fics
Girl what were YOU doing at the devil's sacrament? is about timber's first date!! so cute, occurs immediately after the whole torture cult thing
Practice Makes Perfect - I know for a fact I've rec'd this one before in an ask maybe a few weeks ago?? this is a fic where tim and ace!bart practice kissing. ends in jaime/bart (I'm sure they have a ship name I just don't know it) and timkon but the timpulse content is actually a really good exploration of their characters imho
friendship as another word for love - this is tagged as minor timber but I'll still put it here. actually this might not be exactly what you're looking for cause my bookmark describes it as "red robin!tim is chaotic af", but honestly I think that's just a description of actual canon
Teenagers Scare The Living Shit Outta Me - okay this might be a crack fic HOWEVER you cannot convince me that everyone around the core four doesn't think there's something hinky going on there. also again not technically a ship fic but I'm still putting it here
Gonna Be A Better One (A Thousand Miles To Your Door) occurs during the time period where Tim quit being Robin (and y'know Steph became Robin instead, but the fic doesn't really deal with that). In this au Kon says fuck that and insists on staying in contact with Tim. great timkon and feels very true to both of them!
time flies by is very emotional for me. I described this in my bookmark as "post n52/rebirth, Tim misses Kon like a phantom limb". that's a good description honestly. I've reread this so many goddamn times actually
batfam fics
Obedience - I'm not the only one obsessed with Ella Enchated AUs, right? right??? anyway this fic is actually so concerned with what is and isn't typical behavior for Tim and also is one of my favorite type of AUs so it's near and dear to me
Exit Strategy breaks my heart - although tbf a lot of these fics do, I definitely read a lot of hurt/comfort. anyway this one is about Tim taking Damian's derision to heart and deciding to leave. The Tim & Damian stuff here is just chef's kiss
The Study of Birds - Tim & Damian bond over birding
Our Common Grave - this is not the only au I've bookmarked focusing on the time Damian cut Tim's line, but the others aren't as focused on Tim, imho, more on the consequences for Damian (or lack thereof, depending on the fic). It's not that I don't like those, I love them even, but obviously they don't fit on a Tim fic rec list. Anyway some quality Tim & Jason stuff here. Ironically even though it's probably my fav batfam dynamic I wouldn't put most of the Tim & Jason stuff I've bookmarked on here, a lot of it is woobified content. not all of it, but a lot of it.
finally, one of my favorites - break. in this au Tim never really joins the batfam and only bruce and alfred ever know his identity. and then he just... stops being a hero. hopeful ending. really good in general, another common reread for me.
hope you enjoyed and let me know if you want any more fic recs!!!

ouattober2023 Day 4: Fav Quote
Tumblr media
"You're Frankenstein. And I'm the werewolf. I ate my boyfriend. Regina thought she was punishing us by erasing who we were. But I think she underestimated how much crap we wanted to forget."
-- Ruby, 2x12 In the Name of the Brother
I can't do pretty graphics to collect some funny, insightful, inspiring moments. But I can think of one of my favorite scenes from Season 2, that set up a big theme (that sadly wasn't followed through imho) and I can ramble about it.
First of all shout out to the FrankenWolf shippers out there. While I'm not invested, I can see the appeal to this. This moment set up a monster angle nicely, a cool contrast to the (Disney) fairytale about princesses and love. It's a step removed from just villain, monsters can live in the inbetween. Imagine Ruby and Whale being around when Mr Hyde showed up (throw in a vampire, because Storybrooke deserves to have a previously unmentioned castle somewhere with a suspiciously coffin-shaped table in the living room).
So, that quote? Masterful. Even in a town filled with all sorts of people of peculiar backgrounds (dwarves, fairies, witches, talking animals), some come with a stigma, marked as bad. This goes with what Leroy says in the same episode, when he mentions E.T. and getting cut up by the government, which goes for everything magic. A follow-up to him and Ruby bringing up that point the episode prior. Some magic wasn't even liked in the Enchanted Forest. It was a dangerous place, not just songbirds and romance.
Not to be a Regina-apologist (yes, given them indoor plumbing surely improved some aspects of life), she very much doomed them to a certain kind of misery. But I love how Ruby here - without anybody of significance (sorry, Whale) hearing - frames the curse as a second chance. Free from the burden of accidentally killing her True Love. Free from the wolf altogether, until magic hit (which is Rumple's doing). It is also interesting to remember that for Regina to enjoy her triumph, she had to remember everything that had happened. She had to keep the good and the bad for her victory. The townsfolk lived mundane lives, void of their happy endings, but also not knowing the full horrors of their lives (look at all the trauma that gets uncovered later on).
For the whole of Season 2 this is a great moment. It goes hand in hand with David and Mary Margaret arguing about where to live, do they even want to go back? It follows up on how dangerous it could be to have magic in a world without magic (becoming a circus attraction). It's also a reminder that "back home" means tragedy and misery for some. What does it mean to have this second "modern world persona" intigrated, to be a somewhat new person.
Of course being the Ruby stan I am, I love this quote for the simple angst of it all. And the way Ruby speaks about Peter's death is a whole evolution. (So far as to maken a joke out of it in front of Merida and Mulan, until she finally uses the word "killed" instead of "ate" when talking to Dorothy.) The whole monster-to-monster thing is cute and I wouldn't have minded a friendship coming out of it. A specific perspective when confronting new threats. And I wish I could have seen Ruby laughing in Regina's face "You think being held back in life by staying with my sick grandma is the worst??". Cursed!Ruby was a naive smalltown girl dreaming big, she was not happy and felt stuck. Yeah, sure sucks. But Red carried the burden of killing innocent people unknowingly and even killing her own mother, when choosing herself instead of what anybody else wants her to do. Red's freedom came with a high price. (And then her loneliness continues, while her friends move on, oops.)

Omg I’m so happy you answered the Exo close ask because it is one of my FAVORITE topics!! This is ofc not to discredit your opinion at ALL I just like ranting about this. As someone who was a huge exo fan from like their predebut days to 2018 and then kinda left it behind- it has been crazy to see the dynamics change. ESPECIALLY following Yixing’s increased distance from the group ( I don’t think he’s in Exo but the dynamics definitely changed once he started to distance himself) in the early days I would definitely have said suho-Lay-Xiumin were the closest. Also Lay and Chen were well known for being absolute best friends, but that friendship actually seemed to fade after the others of China line left. Kai has gotten a lot closer to exo over the years imho. He was notorious predebut for not really getting along with exo outside of lay, which continuted sometime into debut. He’s always been interesting tho because out of everyone in exo he definitely gives the vibes that he’s not as dependent on the group and values his friendships outside of Exo. He is also the only member who Yixing has mentioned seeing in the past few years, and he even said on a reality show a few months ago that he speaks to Kai most frequently. Which is interesting considering they didn’t interact much during his last “active” years with the group. Kyungsoo and Baekhyun have DEFINITELY gotten closer over the years and it’s honestly been great to see. I would actually say Sehun and Kai have drifted apart over the years, and used to be closer back when they were lumped together all the time as the maknaes. Another notable pairing from the olden days is sehun and jongdae, which is interesting in today’s context. But I 100% agree that all of Exo has passed coworkers a while ago and that they are all friends!
Baekhyun being “Exo” is so true. He really has found a way to work himself into the hearts of everyone in that group though sheer persistence. CBX being incredibly close is so surprise. And neither is the former exo-m boys (jongdae and minseok) being close. I think all of your opinions are 100% correct I just wanted to talk about how the groups dynamics used to be back in the day lol since I was such a huge fan!
heyyyy tysm it's interesting to hear other povs about it - specially since you were here since the beginning lmaooo oh how i wish i could have been part of the fandom back then. i can't imagine how much everything has changed
very interesting to hear the lay side of the story! the kai thing is also a surprise to me cause I always felt the only thing they had in common back in the day was being the dancers of the group. just the other day i was talking to a friend about how to me the dynamic between ot8 and lay is like. seeing an old friend from high school you still have a lot of love for but if you met them for coffee it would definitely be weird and you'd find you actually don't have much to talk about at all. lol

Hi friend, I figured we could both take a break from the all the fandom drama and chat about something a little more fun so: What are your thoughts on Nickistat and do you agree with the pervasive fan theory that Nicholas was Lestat's one true love/the one that got away, and that Lestat only fell in love with Louis because Louis reminded him of Nicki?
After reading TVL, I was a bit underwhelmed because their friendship/romance is very short lived and towards the end Nicki seems to imply that he never loved Lestat and always resented him. It was still beautiful and tragic, but not the epic love story I expected it to be from all the fan content I had seen. I'd be curious to hear your perspective on Nickistat vs Loustat.
Hey dear! 💕
Aww I do love Nickistat, and it is so formative for Lestat. Nicki was one of the first to accept and believe in Lestat (at least to his face), to share these important realiztions at the Witches' place and the Golden Moment with him.
The first true love.
And the first terrible pain, too.
I don't think Nicki got away, I think he was doomed to fall from the beginning, if you take his expectations into account. Magnus' attack and Armand's abduction only expedited the process. Let the darkness rise faster.
And it is horrible that Armand cut his hands off, and Lestat's little comment in TVL, that he is glad that they're gone because otherwise he would have had to go back to Paris to get them... a world of pain.
There is this very beautiful passage in TVL on Louis, and I think that Lestat is actually pretty aware of himself there... but it ultimately boils down to this (imho) - he noticed Louis, because of the characteristics he recognized from his first love... and then he fell for him, fatally, hook, line and sinker. Just... fatally.
And there is no other, not really. Lestat carries infatuations like a new wristwatch^^, but he always returns to Louis. And Louis comes to him in the end, too. Waits for him. Visits him to watch films or sleep on the couch. All the other vampires know it, too, even Akasha knows better than to touch Louis, and that is even before they've really reunited. Hell, Armand knows better than to touch Louis. :))
To me... Louis seems more grounded in himself, more at peace with himself, in the end at least. And that is what you need to be with Lestat, right *laughs* It takes a while, too, to get to this kind of acceptance.
Nicolas was never fit to reach that kind of serenity, even if he had survived longer, imho. He was blinded by (what they call in the books) "Lestat's light".
Louis... Louis managed to adapt to it. And manage it. 😅

GK 1x08
holyshit what an ep. SO. MUCH. HAPPENED:
Lincoln is the fucking head of the court of owls.
i confess i did NOT see that coming given he came off as a smug clueless douche and the way he showed Harvey the coin and the fact the Talon attacked him; kudos to the writers and the dude's acting on this twist bc once it happened i was like, of course! makes sense! and yet i didn't see it coming. this is great storytelling. i want to be surprised. i want to be proven wrong in ways that make sense for the characters - Lincoln fits the court of owls leader role so well both in personality and surrounding plot.
Lincoln also knows about Harvey fucking his wife which does not bode well for our man.
i'm gonna theorise right now that Lincoln is responsible for the Two-Face attack, obvs. still undecided on whether it will be intentional (seems likely) or if Harvey tries to save Turner or Rebecca and ends up being collateral damage (this speaks more to a villainous outcome imho bc the attack comes while he's trying to be heroic)
we got a glimpse of fugue!Harvey - triggered by the piano music courtesy of the court.
seems like the court [re:Lincoln] has been using fugue!Harvey for nefarious means, and now that Lincoln knows Harvey is a homewrecker he's going to use fugue!Harvey to ruin Harvey
fugue!Harvey was at the owls meeting.
Harvey wakes up in an owl mask spattered with blood; we saw Lincoln stab Cressida so either Harvey was present in the woods or at least the party - seems more likely the amount of spatter came from the Talon being beheaded, and since Harvey has bloody hands maybe he helped move the body. I wonder of fugue!Harvey has killed anyone besides the mayor.
Turner has been taken by the court.
what do they plan to do with him? test the electrum? that could be an interesting outcome
shoutout to Stephanie's homelife breaking all our hearts.
her mom is addicted to pain meds and her dad is in denial about what kind of help she needs and they both blame Steph, fuckmeup
Turner/Duela friendship or maybe more?
Duela wants to find Turner asap and screw the danger of it. it's nice to see her legit caring about someone bc while i love her snarky one-liners and overall persona she was a little detached from the rest of the gang for lack of emotional connection, so thankyou for that writers!
we learn Duela's mom is a con artist still in prison.
idk if it's Harley Quinn bc I know nothing about the comics but this mention makes me pretty confident we'll meet her mom at some point
So! i have questions and theories:
who ordered the Talon to attack Lincoln?
was it Rebecca? this makes sense given the Talon didn't harm Harvey. but surely Lincoln would know she did it, and she would know that he knows, bc she would also be an owl.
was it fugue!Harvey trying to take Lincoln out from the inside? this also makes sense given the Talon didn't harm Harvey.
was it Lincoln? the Talon didn't kill him afterall, and the attack took place in Harvey's office as if to implicate him - but Lincoln didn't know about the affair at the time.
fugue!Harvey is a court member.
did he become a member of his own volition and the court discovered a way to trigger him? or did the court induct fugue!Harvey with a promise to let him out to play?
this makes Lincoln coming to him with news of recieving a coin intriguing: was he testing to see if Harvey recognised owl stuff?
it also makes Lincoln's comment about Harvey being a two-faced politician that much more delicious since he knows how true it is.
Rebecca???
given that Lincoln is the leader(?) of the owls, surely Rebecca must be a member as well.
i do wonder... is she playing a long-con with Harvey somehow? maybe she wants out of the court and her marriage and to be with Harvey, or maybe she wants fugue!Harvey with her all the time and they could both live forever courtesy of the court's electrum hunt?
admittedly she is my least favorite character bc i find her boring and cliche, but that may also be a smokescreen hiding more interesting characteristics and plot yet to be revealed.
Two-Face.
Lincoln might use Harvey (not fugue!Harvey) as a test subject for the Electrum as revenge for sleeping with his wife; it risks Harvey becoming immortal but maybe the science isn't there yet so it's basically just torture and possibly death. BUT: things go haywire (maybe Turner rescues Harvey, maybe the machine shorts-out, mabye Harvey gets free) and we end up with scarred Harvey and the emergence of Two-Face - who also might be kind of immortal (not to the extent of the Talon but more indestructible than the average human).
the 1x09 promo gives us more to go on:
"so many things about your life suddenly make sense"
spoken by Lincoln over footage of Turner and a memory of his parents(?). this goes with my theory that Turner's parents were also court members, or perhaps knew what the court was up to and sought out Bruce Wayne's help stop them, perhaps bc they knew Alan Wayne once betrayed the owls?
Lincoln stabs/tortures Turner
given what we learned about Electrum being meteorite material and how an old doctor (was it Lincoln?!) experimented on the city's poor people with it, perhaps Turner's ancestors were experimented on and now he holds the key to unlocking how to successfully administer Electrum? this would mean Turner may be unkillable, so i can't wait to see how that plays out if true!
however: the Electrum procedure already worked on the Talon so why would they need Turner? well, bc the Talon seems to be a mindless servant whereas Turner has intellect and free will ie. he's a fucntioning independant human being which is what the court wants.
it may also be that Lincoln is just trying to get the whereabouts of the batbrats bc they have the map to the Electrum
Someone staggering down the hallway
flashback of poisoned Bruce? there are bats, afterall (probably hallucinated but still apt)
more likely it's Turner trying to escape Lincoln who is holding him hostage in Wayne manor, and the bats are real (they swarm Lincoln at one point)
i'm sure i'll have more thoeries and thoughts on a rewatch and once i see what the rest of fans are saying, but this is what i'm musing on right now. and for all the twists that happened at the end of the ep i'm SO excited for next week!

ok i can understand that they may not have been in the right mental space (whether personal things or things with jk antis) and the fandom only making it worse for them, but PERSONALLY, i can never understand letting fandom bs persuade you into speaking badly on the members.
and imho mimi hasn't properly addressed it, so when people keep bringing it up (bc it's a bit concerning that they're in jkk spaces while having said the things they did about jimin (this goes for those who do this with jk too btw)) bc "deleted it" or "changed my mind" isn't always enough or true (for whoever, not just mimi).
instead they got mad and started turning anons into jk antis just bc they (anons) called them out about being weird about jimin.
their frustration was geared towards the expected reaction to jkks words from the fandom
some of what they have said didn't feel like it was fandom influence, it felt like that's how MIMI feels towards jimin and jikook
this kind of annoys me about jikook and have for years, like they always downplay their (assumed) friendship. if you're best friends why not act like it? like honestly. makes it hard to defend their friendship when they themselves downplay it.
in the past they’d do or say something that would make it obvious how close they are (at least good friends) but not so much these days. i’m just tired of the weirdness.
i always said (to myself) if they were acting as proper best friends at least it would be easier for me to not be delusional. but are we really expected to believe that jimin would fly to the us for jk’s debut when he didn’t have to but he can’t make it on his bday when jk is doing nothing?
and this comment is just disrespectful
jimin refusing to do a live for who knows what reason but now he wants to copy the kind of lives jk has been doing. none of this weirdness ever happens with any of the members.
if they truly regret their words and care for jimin, that's great!
i really do want more jk biased jkkers or even just jkkers that stand up for jk and don't use him as a shipping tool, but i'm not going to allow people to speak weirdly about jimin to do so.
hope you and mimi are doing well 💜
Okay, anon I feel like this ask can be answered better by mimi themselves than I, so I'm just going to redirect you to them to clarify.

I feel like every time we get a new boyfriend to write songs about there’s always a contingent of people who want to make that guy into some kind of Great Love Of Her Life when imho the whole point of TTPD is that you can know somebody for a decade and suddenly become enamored of them and want them romantically and sexually, and then the spark of infatuation makes you want to romanticize and narrativize your great love story and reassess everything you ever did together
but that feeling being present and true for you doesn’t mean that it’s true for them, and it doesn’t hurt less when your relationship burned out in a month and took the friendship with it

Tbh, nothing is wrong with two leads of a show or core characters getting together. Quite frankly, I’d argue that it works better from a writer and audience stance than it does to introduce a new character/love interest.
Imho, the issue isn’t that it’s done, it’s how it’s done.
Some shows can be incredibly lazy and obvious about their intent, which is what ruins that build up. Characters are immediately attracted to each other just because (and I mean in a way that is clearly contrived and doesn’t make sense to the narrative), and then all this work is done to either separate them or keep them separated.
Either the actors have no real chemistry or have chemistry, but the material is severely lacking.
Sometimes it’s just two good looking people.
And some tragic cases, it’s no chemistry, good looking, and subpar material.
Or they’re getting together because they’re leads. No narrative purpose, just “lead.”
When you watch poorly constructed romances; yeah, of course you’re tired and burned out.
There’s the argument that men and women can be friends, which I argue. However, I really don’t hear these same people loudly support and uplift the platonic m/f relationships in media. The only time they talk about men and women being friends is when they don’t want two people getting together opposed to chatting about the friendships they’ve enjoyed that was portrayed on tv.
The thing about shippers: we never shut the fuck up about our ship. Show could be off the air for 10 years and we’re still going hard. Where as the noromo crowd are quiet and only reacting to a ship opposed to supporting the platonic friendships they crave so much. Like why don’t I see viral posts about Ron and Leslie all that often? (If at all, tbh).) why don’t I see random tumblr posts about them or Twitter threads? Do y’all have to do that?
No.
However, some writers will go where they get the most support.
Tbh, I’d argue that many writers and show runners want to tell a love story. This example could age poorly, which is fine, but I think Ted x Rebecca from Ted Lasso was crafted with romance in mind. It’s quite weird to get upset at them not maintaining a friendship (if they get together) because “men and women can be friends without romance or sex” when the original plan (presumably) was for them to get together. In a sense, some are arguing that writers shouldn’t tell the story they want to tell because they like the first part of their relationship (friendship), but hate the other part (romance, despite it having not happened yet).
Imo, this series has clearly set up that this relationship is supposed to end in a romance, which if true, was always the plan. The writers have been upfront that everything in the show has been planned out before the show was even greenlit, which is why it’s ending after three seasons.
We know see this happening with The Bear. Some people are clamoring at the fact that Jeremy said Carmy’s not thinking about sex and sex is absent from the narrative. But the series is seemingly setting up something. And, if they are, that means that it’s always been the plan for Syd and Carmy to have romantic feelings. This show dropped all at once so it’s not like the fans pressured the show to do anything. And, yet, there are things in the narrative that hints at a foundation being laid for romance.
And this is primarily a prominent character syndrome. Whether or not they actually have a friendship, if someone even gets a sniff that they might end up together or they have shippers, it’s “why can’t men and women be just friends???” If the lead is shipped with someone else apart of the main/core cast, that’s fine.
I remember when many were afraid of Ted x Keeley being a thing, but instead they have a great friendship. Their friendship is hardly talked about, as in no one asking for it to be featured more and celebrating it. Instead, it’s “why do Ted and Rebecca have to end up (together” as these people pair Ted with his therapist ?literally because she did her job, I’m not joking) and are all in on Rebecca dating a player, despite her being the owner. They don’t even celebrate the Rebecca x Roy friendship that much or Rebecca x Leslie. Apparently, it doesn’t count because one of them are in relationships.
Even though Ted and Rebecca are close, I’m not sure if I’d define their closeness as a friendship. It’s very hard to define. Or, at least, I wouldn’t define them as besties like some people try to do. There’s a lot of weird elements that can’t be summed up to friendship that some are in denial about.
With The Bear, Sydney is only supposed to have a mentee/mentor relationship with Carmy, despite that not really being their relationship. Or a CDC/sous chef relationship, which again, that not really being their relationship although it’s their official label. The series sets up that they’re really partners before officially having Carmy ask Sydney to be his partner. They don’t have the dynamic people claim nor are they friends. Yet, the same people will ship Sydney with Marcus and Richie.
Disclaimer: I don’t have issues with other ships, however, there is a level of hypocrisy and willful ignorance behind many of these arguments. Like, someone may not see it for a ship, but when a series is clearly setting something up and the person is ignoring it, imo, they’re bad actors here.
The love interest who isn’t apart of the friend group or working closely with the lead shines in movies. It’s a tighter story with a tighter focus. The movies that do feature m/f friendships, again, tend to fall in the wayside of active support. Not money, but discussed platonic relationships.
Lastly, the most memorable and iconic couples are mostly either pairings from the core cast OR the couple was already established. In all honesty, this makes sense.
Romance or not, fans usually don’t take well to new characters popping up years later. You also have to integrate this person into the show without it feeling forced. We also want to be invested in this romance if that’s what’s being sold.
Not only does the writing have to be good and work on several levels, this person has to have chemistry with not just whoever they’re paired with, but the other characters as well depending on the show. The only show I know of off the top of my head able to do that was HIMYM. And it was considered a remarkable feat.
Where as building a romance with existing characters have fans more likely to invest, stick with, and root for the pairing. The romance is more likely to feel earned and natural to the narrative.
And I’m not saying there aren’t any love interest later on introduced who don’t work, I’m saying they don’t work as often as established characters.

I'd go as far and say a Harry/Ginny romance doesnt work with the structure of the books. Its not an ensemble, its protagonist centric story. And Harrys main relationships are with Ron, Hermione and Voldemort. What makes Draco unique is that he can be a Voldemort stand-in, & used to explore relevant/main book themes like redemption, love, forgiveness, good and evil. He's Harrys age and has the most screentime out the Voldemort-allied side (not counting Snape since hes a spy).
JKR true failure is Harry in the H/G relationship ; She doesnt build emotional connection between them, doesnt include Ginny in Harrys adventures ; its golden trio through and trough, even after book 2 or 5 - they dont even share a single significant moment in the DoM! He patronisingly doesnt "allow" her to fight during battle just like Molly. When the war ends Harry thinks "later" about Ginny and needs to process what happend with the ppl he loves most aka Ron/Hermione even Dumbledores portrait. I would not even describe them as very close friends; she is Ron sister and sometimes part of an extended friend circle. When Harry crushes on her, he angsts about "Rons sister" and not " omg i could loose our friendship" cause they dont have a personal/intimate relationship on that level.
Does Harry even know anything about her? Who are her friends, her best school subjects, her insecurities? The one thing he knew- Riddle- he "forgot". Rowling builds this on nothing but superficialities like hotness, being jocks and jealousy and Ginny being a Weasley and called it a day.
Im not saying toss Harry/Draco together with no build up (obviously that would also require dedication) but at least that theoretical romance would actually relate to the events of story and portray how the characters are fundamentally changed by the events of the books in a positive way despite the war, instead Harry returns to dating the girl he dated for 2 months in high school who was not a vital character in this journey as if nothing happened...okay..
Yeah it's bizarre. In book 5 Ginny start getting some good development and then it just....stops. Book 6 Ginny feels like a different character and way shallower. It's like she got turned into Love Interest TM and all other characterization got thrown out the window. Which doesn't make the romance very compelling. There was potential there but imho it doesn't get realized.

HAPPY SASAMYUUTAI OPENING DAY!
I've just returned from the very first show, and now you people have to hear me shriek about it! I took copious notes, so sit back, relax, and let's crack open a cold one with these boys. There will of course be spoilers, so if you're waiting for the stream on the 31st to watch the show, then go on, git. Everyone else, behind the cut!
"How many people went?"
It's only opening day, so there will be more people at later shows (I was 8th row today, but I'll only be 15th row next Friday), but the theater was filled to about 50% capacity. It should be noted that more people will probably be attending shows that have after-talks with the cast, which this one did not, so it wasn't as 'in-demand'.
Before the actual show started, they had an announcement over the speakers to tell audience members the rules of the theater (normal stuff). This is often done by actors in character for musicals and plays based on anime and such, so this time it was Miyano delivering an announcement from the 'Disciplinary Committee' XDD He was interrupted about halfway through by Sasaki who was mostly there to distract and flirt.
The opening 'credits' where they introduced the cast were hella gorgeous. They overlaid this beautiful moving night-sky-scape over most of the set, and there was a kind of laser light show almost that was really intricately choreographed. I can't wait for the stream so everyone else can see it and hope it comes through. It was kinda breathtaking!
For the play itself, let's get one thing clear: they had to trim a LOT of fat. They shrank nearly 7 volumes down to just 2 hours of time, which is like half the anime. I was worried that was going to result in a rushed product that didn't have any of the heart of the original. However, while I won't say it was PERFECT, and it DID feel a bit rushed, it was still true to the original manga, I thought, and they did a great job of snipping and rearranging and revising scenes to allow a more rapid pace. Kudos to the scriptwriter!
Anyone who's read the manga knows that the first volume has a LOT of flashbacks and isn't really told in chronological order. The scriptwriter wisely said "fuck that" and told the story in order. So we start with the fight scene and then develop Sasaki and Miyano's relationship from there.
Sensei mentioned in the pamphlet interview that they had actually ADDED a few scenes from the manga that didn't make it into the anime, which was shocking to me considering how much they needed to shorten it, but they did indeed add a few scenes--even some ORIGINAL scenes. One of those scenes was a scene of Kuresawa and Miyano talking in the nurse's office after Miyano escorts Kuresawa away from the fight. It's here that Kuresawa mentions the reason for the fight (a scene we don't see until much later in the manga, and even then it's between Kuresawa and Sasaki). It was a nice little addition to help you understand that these two were already friends. The early minutes of the play have a fair bit of Miyano-Kuresawa-and Tashiro bonding scenes that reinforce their friendship for the audience.
Hanzawa is also introduced VERY early; we actually SEE him talking to Miyano a bit before he asks him to deliver the printouts to Hirano in chapter 3.
One way they increased the pace of the action, too, was to actually just…increase the pace of speaking. These boys' mouths were ROCKET SHIPS, and this was particularly amusing when Miyano went on his long and rambling rants XD his word vomit nearly became just that.
One thing that I found a little jarring, though, was the interspersing of monologue and dialogue. In the Live Reading events, we saw the lines that were meant to be in the characters' heads given a bit of echo-y reverb, which worked well. They tried it here too, to much less success IMHO. This was mostly because the lines were going so quickly and the switch between internal/external happening back and forth and back and forth. There were more than a few times I was like o_O before recalling "oh right that was supposed to be said in his head."
In the play, Sasaki reads the manga he first borrows from Miyano on the same day as he receives it, giving his thoughts on the manga he received in the morning later that afternoon. Miyano is shocked, since he EXPLICITLY told Sasaki not to read it in public, but Sasaki assures him he did it on the rooftop, where no one would see. I assume this was a change to avoid having to do scene changes and indications of time passing, and it worked nicely I thought. Sasaki sneaking off to read porn on the school rooftop seems likely XD
There was no Valentine's Day scene and no pocky scene, but we did get the cookies scene and Miyano explaining how he got into BL. And of course the BLEP made it in a-okay, fret not! Ogasawara's introduction was retained as well.
I also don't know HOW it wasn't fixed in rehearsals, since it must have been happening all the time, but these boys were dropping their cell phones left and right when they would bend over and it would slip from their pockets. Sasaki dropped his first and continued on with a scene, and then Miyano in another scene dropped his and it clattered OFF THE STAGE and into the audience and Kuresawa had to jump down into the audience seats to recover it lmao.
Some scenes had to be removed entirely or merged with others to streamline the show, and one of those was…Sports Day. Yes, the entire confession setting was changed lol. This wasn't SO bad actually; Sasaki confesses quietly on the train, Miyano quietly freaks out about it, and then we immediately segue to the next day where they're talking about a new manga (as at Sports Day), and Miyano is reflecting that WHEW they're acting normally and he had nothing to worry about and maybe he mishear--"I'm in love with you, Miyano."
The mask scene where Sasaki watches him sleep as well as the phone call were of course retained and were quite cute.
The next major scene is when Miyano learns he's been volunteered to do the drag pageant, and Hanzawa's laughter is quite creepy here. A+++ job to the actor. When they rope in Kuresawa to play backup to Miyano's entry, Hanzawa tries to get Tashiro to cross-dress as well…and actually wears him down. This leads to a scene that will likely be a daily ad-lib scene, where each show has a different bit of ad-libbing here. Hanzawa brings out a paper bag that he says has an outfit he's sure will look great on Tashiro. The thing is, I think the costume staff put things in there WITHOUT TELLING THE ACTORS WHAT IT IS, so they get surprised by the contents as well. Today, it was a pair of what looked like knock-off Minnie Mouse ears, complete with a bow.
Shortly after this scene, Kuresawa tries on his schoolgirl outfit and makes his appearance as 'Tasuko'. When he swans out on stage, he asks a random audience member in the front row if he looks good. When she inevitably says he does, he apologizes and says he has a girlfriend already.
It's around here that a few scenes get rolled together. There are two separate scenes of Miyano trying on his pageant outfit in the manga: chapter 22 and chapter 23. These are combined into a single scene, with Hanzawa giving the talk to Miyano from Chapter 22 rolling right into him getting called away and Sasaki finding Miyano in Chapter 23, even though in canon these seem to take place on separate days.
We then move into the cultural festival itself. At one point, Tashiro, Miyano, and Kuresawa run around looking at all the booths. Tashiro spots one waaaay in the back, and they squint to read it: "Sasaki and Miyano…is getting…a movie!" XDDD cue clapping from the audience for anyone who managed to miss the announcement before.
At the Badboy Fortune-telling Cafe this time, we actually get Ogasawara in addition to Sasaki and Hirano. Unfortunately for Sasaki, this means he gets chewed out from both sides about not looking rough enough around Miyano. They drag him to the side to do a My Fair Lady (My Bad Boy?) on him in another segment that will probably be ad-libbed daily.
In today's scene, Ogasawara tells Sasaki to deliver a one-liner from a 'badboy with two completely different sides to him' (kind of like the trope of the badboy who adopts a kitten), and Sasaki comes up with: "Yo bitch, can't believe you kept me waitin' for our date, but gosh your makeup looks absolutely divine."
After this, Ogasawara drags Tashiro away for a 'Become a Badboy' experience, which Tashiro is absolutely stoked for XD "Become a badboy in body and soul!"
At the drag pageant, we finally see Miyano all dolled up and…I'm sorry XD;;;; to Miyano's absolute delight I'm sure, he doesn't look ANYTHING like a girl, let alone a beautiful one lmao. They tried! But they failed.
A new scene is added among the four third-years as they reflect on this being their last cultural festival together ;;;;; and then when they decide to go watch the fireworks together…Sasaki of course peaces out to go be with Miyano, much to Ogasawara's irritation, who must be bodily dragged away by wingmen Hirano and Hanzawa.
The fireworks in the fireworks scene were tbh a little underwhelming, because I expected them to do more effects like they had in the opening, but otherwise it was just lovely. They REALLY paid loving homage to sensei's hand fetish. We are being fed well.
One scene I was DELIGHTED to see newly added was…the New Year's extra! Yes, to streamline things and/or give more of the cast time to shine, they switched the movie date for this scene. I definitely didn't mind, as it's a scene we didn't get to see in the anime (and they stuck fairly close to it), and also we got to see more of Miyano's KagiHira brainrot when Hirano showed up with Sasaki rather than his roommate on his arm.
But it wasn't just them showing up…Hanzawa showed up too--WITH HIS BROTHER. Yup, Masaomi is actually in the play for a couple of different scenes with quite a few lines! HANZAWA MASAOMI, WHO WAS NOT EVEN MENTIONED IN THE PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL FOR THIS PLAY, HAD MORE 'SCREENTIME' THAN KAGIURA AKIRA IN THE ENTIRE ANIME. The Kagi-kun erasure is real.
It's during this new year's scene that Miyano realizes his feelings and decides to confess, so we quickly segue into the next bit with all the near-misses of Miyano trying to corner Sasaki and failing. The almost-kiss in the stairwell was done really well and seemed natural. After Sasaki runs away and Miyano reaffirms his own feelings for Sasaki, we even get some shoujo doritos like in the anime. Throwback!
The kiss scene was….something. In a very good way. Of course, the actors weren't actually going to kiss, so if you're hoping for that, get outta here lol. Even without Covid, I doubt they would have had actual lip-locking. You don't usually see that here, even for actual BL plays. So I was wondering how they were going to hide it. They did it really tastefully, angling their bodies so you couldn't see their actual faces but they were clearly still 'kissing'. One thing I REALLY liked, though, was that while in the manga, Miyano keeps his bag on his shoulder when they kiss, here--perhaps because of bodily logistics, maybe it kept sliding off--they have Sasaki take the bag from his shoulder for him when he steps in for a kiss. And he just does it…so slowly…and carefully, peeling it off of Miyano and gently setting it down before cupping his cheek. It got me. That's some good shit right there.
And that, friends, is the "Sasaki and Miyano" stage play! It was a fantastic show, and I can't wait to go again (I'll be back at it Friday!). As a reminder, the final two shows will be livestreamed on the interwebs, so everyone will be able to see it in living color next Sunday Japan time (Saturday 11 PM EST and Sunday 3 AM EST). Details like cost and how to watch haven't been announced yet, but I'll definitely post them here.
Hope this was somewhat coherent!

Hello 🚩🚩🚩 anon here.
The comments from the anon who said...
[Direct quote]: "your anons shouldn’t have to insult other couples to show support for buddie. hen and karen are important queer representation as two black lesbian woman in a happy relationship and maddie and chimney are an interracial couple who have found love after trauma. And they are important to a lot of people so honestly it’s very insulting and demeaning to say they’re boring.
And if maybe Maddie’s role was reduced take that up with the writers that didn’t give her the screentime she deserves instead of bashing madney?" [End quote]
...are lopsided and unfounded. Anon, please understand a person can make comments about how "boring" a ship/couple on 9-1-1 or any TV show for that matter is if they believe it to be true. Also, a difference of opinion with you doesn't mean the person is insulting or demeaning "Henren" or "Madney".
Let's be clear and real here for a minute, the storylines they've been given is what makes them boring. So, don't fault the other anon for stating facts when your comments are the ones that are lopsided.
Here are a few facts and reasons why the ships on the show have become BORING.
Madney - Initially, they had a wonderful friendship that turned into a romantic relationship but the creators and the showrunner turned them into a boring couple when they didn't give them any good storylines and when they diminished their relationship to the point where Maddie completely overshadows Chimney and he's sidelined and treated like a recurring character even though he's been on the show since the beginning. All of his storylines are attached to hers and let's be real, her storylines haven't been good since before JLH went on maternity leave at the beginning of S5. The way they had Chimney chasing her across the U.S. was just BAD! It would have been a lot better if they would've let her tell Chimney she was struggling (***check notes***) like she did at the end of season 4 but instead of doing that, what did 9-1-1 do? They let her leave with a video and left him there to watch it at the firehouse. Everyone knows Chimney has abandonment issues because his own father left him to fend for himself in the U.S. when he was 15 years old after his mother died. Also, prior to his relationship with Maddie, he was afraid Tatiana was going to leave him. The FACT is Maddie did leave and he was afraid but THAT DOES NOT EXCUSE HIS BEHAVIOR WHEN HE PUNCHED BUCK IN THE FACE.
It's really unbelievable the show didn't let Maddie say anything about Chimney punching her brother and giving him a black eye especially since she's a DV survivor. Buck is her brother and she was the one who took care of him while he was growing up so she should have been the first person to say something to Chimney about his bad behavior. Now don't get it twisted, I like Chimney but the way that storyline played out was not a good look for him, her or Buck and it shouldn't have made it past the smell test. ALL OF THEM WERE OUT OF CHARACTER and there's no excuse for it other than the showrunner didn't know what to do with Chimney without Maddie being there. 🙄
Henren - Has the longest relationship on the show. They've been together for years but the creators and the showrunner have NO IDEA of what to do with them and IMHO it has to do with the showrunner not allowing them to have any good storylines. That foolery they included in S6 for them with Denny's bio dad was even WORSE than the Madney storyline from S5. Instead of letting Denny run off to meet some dude he'd never met before, the showrunner should have watched S2 and verified the agreement Nathaniel made with Hen and Karen. That storyline shouldn't have played out like it did because he was supposed to follow their lead.
Also, their storyline in the finale was BAD because they just stuck some unknown foster kids with them and completely blindsided the audience with it because they hadn't fostered a child since Nia left in S4. Also, IIRC, they weren't allowed to foster a lot of kids at once but they had like five or six in the finale. At first, I thought they were some of Denny's friends but when I realized they were a lot younger than him, I had no idea where they came from.
Hen's medical school storyline ended like a wet match when they could have done a lot more with it. It was like they gave up or something and didn't put any effort into it.
Bathena - They've become boring too and IMHO, the show is using the shock value of a cruise ship sinking like the Titanic to get people to watch but that is so played out and Bobby and Athena deserve better. Is the cruise ship emergency needed, YES! Why? Because S6 was worse than S5 so hopefully it'll be exciting enough to hold people's attention but let's be real, a CGI generated cruise ship will NOT hold a match to the Tsunami, the Earthquake or the Shooting!
Buddie - I won't even comment on the recycled storylines they keep giving Eddie and Buck to delay the inevitable because if do, this post wouldn't end. But just like all the other ships, they deserve so much better than some one-dimensional LIs who will be around for like 2 minutes unless they drag out those storylines like they did the ones with AF and TK. If they do then God help us all because those were BAD on so many levels.
The point of this anonymous ask is to point out the fact that the anon who posted the quote above needs to redirect their frustrations to the show instead of to the people who comment on how boring the ships are. Let's be real, a lot of the GA feels the same way.
People need to stop thinking that if a person has a different viewpoint than theirs', it's incorrect because it's not true.
Thanks anon for this lovely ask/answer. I agree with all your comments on the couples and almost couples (see what I did there). The show runner[s] need to see and hear what the fans want. It would do them some good if they did. Dare I say they would have in their hands a m/m couple that defied odds and got together in their 30s that also had 1000% chemistry.

La Cuisine Review - Sweetness & Patience
Tumblr media Tumblr media
quick pitch
La Cuisine
(Thailand March-April GaGa)
7/10
Tropes: crush, campus star, bully trigger, best boys, soft & sweet
Look, I am trash for trash, but this was less trashy than most Thai BL pulps. University set about a popular architecture student who is a picky eater and the food science major who has a crush on him and uses food to court him. I COULD NOT ASK FOR MORE. Basically it gave me reason, and room, to breathe by being exactly what I want from a Thai BL with no attempt to be anything else.
Tumblr media
I adored the taste-then-cook competition opener. The chef teacher is queer, not just visually but linguistically (using the ja particle). Do I spot an actual butch character in a BL? YES!
Tumblr media
In fact, for a throw-away pulp show this one had some charming points of casual queer rep.
This was another favorite moment of mine:
Tumblr media
Phai to the pink haired bestie & Kitty (who’s 3rd gender).
Meanwhile, the seme love interest, P’Ram, is a rich campus moon but also a genuinely nice guy with 2 hot besties.
So, sure, we are in hella familiar y-novel territory. But if I were into BL for novelty of it, I wouldn’t be into BL. The older architecture phis with their colorless lives coming up with tricky ways to keep meeting up with the bright sparkly queer food service kids is the CUTEST flipping thing.
It’s like watching two friendship groups falling in love with each other.
Tumblr media
What is unique about this one is that this pulp has unexpectedly high production values and good quality cast & wardrobe. Even the het couple is cute. Love the pink hair!
What a surprise gem. This season’s Nitiman with a better ending.
The romance is VERY chaste and YA-ish, soft and sweet and fun to see some almost old fashioned ideas about teen love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chup being bullied is so sad. But Ram’s “my good boy” is the best, because it’s so true.
Honestly, RamChup are just about the marshmallow fluffy sweetest softest little snookums. I liked the external bullying as a narrative pressure, although I wish it hadn’t been combined with the faen fatale. I wish this show had just taken shipping culture to task.
Tumblr media
I enjoyed La Cuisine’s moments of self reference too, but it is awful slow. Thank goodness GaGa has 1.5x speed option. It also takes the faen fatale archetype to the next level of extreme evil.
Everyone got a cute couple ending, even characters I didn’t really recognize, couldn’t remember, or showed no chemistry. But hey, shrug. Also, Sky & Phai = unexpectedly great kiss.
Tumblr media
Why did we not get their thread (and Kitty’s for that matter) throughout the show? It would’ve helped with the pacing a lot. (Honestly, these two actors probably should’ve played the leads, IMHO).
In the end, a sweet and kind of pure show, and like Thai desserts perhaps requires too much patience for a layperson. Because of the pacing and the focus on the bad girl character, I did dock it.
Tumblr media
But if you like stuff in the Oxygen vein, then this show is for you, and far better than most Thai BL pulps. That said, I suspect that I enjoyed it more than many would.
RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS
I ran into this tweet and it made me think of this show:

what do you think of the spinneraki dynamic
I don’t mean the ship I mean just how it’s being used for their arcs
I see a lot of mixed thoughts from people on whether it’s positive or not since nownspinner is back in action
Mmh, I don't have any deep thoughts on this. I think their friendship is a positive driving force in both their arcs.
Shigaraki's growth once AFO was imprisoned revolved around bonding with the League and learning to adapt to their goals and integrating them in his. Basically, he became a more complex and self-aware person and a better leader once he was free to socialize. We can see how that process got inverted with the possession. Now that AFO is isolating him again, Shigaraki's spiralling and threatening to disappear. But his bonds with the League are important, and though all of them are comrades, with Spinner he forged a proper friendship born out of common interests and mutual respect. Remember, Shigaraki respects Spinner too. It's not a one way street. When Spinner manifested doubts about his leadership, Shigaraki didn't force him to stay with the League, but fought fights that would mean something to Spinner and benefit the League at the same time (wiping out the CRC in pursuit of money) and calmly let Spinner choose if that was enough to stay.
As for Spinner's arc... Here it gets a bit more complex because Spinner thinks of himself as a side character in his own story, and defaults to following others because he doesn't have enough faith in himself to think he can achieve things alone. And he ended up falling prey of AFO's machinations because of this. But even if AFO used his bond with Tomura to manipulate Spinner, I don't think that makes their friendship inherently bad for either of them. Friendship is the heart of stories like bnha, or of shounen manga in general. Spinner ended up succumbing to the Big Bad of the series out of a genuine wish to protect his friends (and yes, Tomura in particular because they're close and because he put all his hopes for the future onto his Leader). But that desire to protect was also depicted as his most basic instinct. Even through the fog currently dominating his mind, Spinner was able to remember his goals thanks to a good memory with Shigaraki. Please note, he had months of memories with him to draw from, but he didn't picture him as his leader self; he pulled up a memory of Shigaraki acting like Just Some Guy, a fellow twenty-something passionate about video games. And that's symbolic imho. Spinner does respect him because Shigaraki is the kind of man who openly pursues his goals and doesn't let anything or anyone stop him, but at the same time he represents something much stronger than that. Shigaraki is Spinner's first friend, the first person who bonded with him for him, for the fun they had playing games together. Spinner always thought that he needed to havr a flashy or strong quirk to be worth something, but in the League he's valued as a person first. Remember, this chapter had a focus on Shouji befriending his classmates and making happy memories with them. Previously, the only time he was glad to be alive was that time when he saved that little girl. Similarly, Spinner admitted to feeling empty inside and having no real driving force. But in the same chapter where Shouji admits the importance of forming true bonds in his journey of self-acceptance, we see Spinner remembering Tomura, and coming back to himself a little more. It's definitely meant as a parallel imho. I reckon that friendship will be Spinner's driving force, and that he'll find the strength he always felt he lacked in trying to keep them away from harm.
