Hi ABL! After watching episode 1 of Between Us, I was impressed with the level of "thirst" between Boun and Prem's characters in the last couple of scenes. Are there shows or scenes of shows, regardless of actual heat level, that you think did "thirst" well, regardless of how that's resolved at the time? Subjective, I know, but would love to get your take on this!

No shocker that Japan is the only one to field a micro on this list. Usually thirst takes more build up.

Defining THIRST

I make a distinction between thirst and other types of physical desire. This is just me and language.

Thirst usually leaps off the screen and has an edge of danger to it. Like they gonna get caught, or go out of control just from wanting to touch. They gonna die without physical contact. It's pure survival need. Japan kinda specializes in this.

There's no humor to thirst, but horny can get kinda cheeky. It's more fun and mutual (ee.g. KinnPorsche). More want than need. So it's more Thailand and Taiwan.

There's also yearning (e.g. The 8th Sense), which has a more emotional soul tether to it. Korea in particular, but also like GMMTV and lower heat prestige stuff, high school things for example (My School President).

And finally hunger, which I tend to think of as desire but with a nourishment component. It's I want what's MINE. Like Taejung in Cherry Blossoms After Winter.

Since I very sincerely doubt Uther managed to kill ALL the Dragonlords (they're knights, not the KGB, and it was a lot easier to disappear back then) imagine them returning to Albion from Rome or whatever to find Cousin Balinor's only son is ruling Camelot and the Druids, is best friends with an immortal knight and one dude that's been raised from the fucking dead, is bonded to THEE oldest dragon they've ever heard of (and who is also nuttier than squirrel stew) and a semi-feral hatchling that barely listens to four (4) people max and hisses/bites/claws at the rest, and oh yeah, is married to a fucking Pendragon.

Family dinners must be a hoot and a half.

oh to be a fly on the wall when they finally make an audience in Camelot. oh to see Merlin's face morph from apprehension to wonder to exhaustion to horror because they're telling Arthur everything they know.

Batch Update: Reach Agent, Desaad, Orion and Lightray

Have I talked about The Reach yet? I know I mentioned them in Dan’s lore, but I never really did Jaime’s outside of the proto-Extreme Justice team. Anyway, they’re pretty far Reach-ing (I’ll show myself out) with advanced scouts sent out as far back as Earth’s Ancient Age of Heroes. Thanagar, Apokolips, WarWorld...no one likes these guys. They’re underhanded, self-serving, needlessly cruel and profit focused. Biologically, they’re essentially insectoids that evolved to fill the niche earth primates would later fill before gaining recognizable sentience. Even the Oan actively despise the Reach--their original species name lost to time as their cultures were absorbed into a single, techno-fascist whole rooted in consumption and control--since the first and only Reach Green Lantern was captured, tortured, and incorporated into the earliest drone-armor that would come to be known as “Scarabs.” The Lantern, Kha-Ji-Da, and his descendent, a Nameless Reach Ambassador, would come to blows many times as the passage of millennia brought The Scarab and its creators back into contact with each other.

Desaad is ostensibly a scientist and doctor in employ of Uxas Darkseid and member of his high court, but really he’s just a two-bit torture fetishist allowed an endless supply of victims by his position and social standing. Desaad was pleased to find a namesake of his--something New Gods occasionally encounter and refer to as “emanations”--having lived on Earth in the past, only to be disappointed that the man’s literature was almost as bland and squeamish as the rest of the Earth’s art. The Internet Age gave Desaad more to chew over, but he remains unimpressed with humanity’s ability to commit acts he invented aeons ago.

Orion and Solis were forever linked by the death of Solis’ parents and his older brother, Arkal, Orion’s first boyfriend (to borrow an Earth term). Adopted into the Court of Highfather, Orion initially took to Solis out of duty, but eventually came to truly came to love his adopted brother. Solis loved Orion enough in turn that when Orion disappeared to the Earth for too long, Solis followed him. Enamored of Earth superheroes and pop culture, he took the name “Lightray” and convinced Orion to become real superheroes together. Orion didn’t see the point, as helping humans was outside their mission parameters, but with a light re-configuration of those parameters, he was convinced.

I assume being an ambassador for Mercedes would have a lot more to do with STEM outreach, equity and environmental programs, etc. than Grill the Grid type fluff. Also Lewis does what he promises to do, and will have a lot more time for it post racing career.

Hmm, yeah, that's the part he's interested in doing, I'm sure, but an actual Brand Ambassador role would involve the expectation to promote Mercedes Brand wholly across multiple different environments.

No, it wouldn't be exclusively through 'content', but there would definitely be expectations to fulfill certain PR/marketing requirements, whether that's partnerships, appearances, or all variety of schmaltzy hob-nobbing.

The stuff you mentioned is something Mercedes has been putting money into for CSR purposes, but it doesn't make them any money. Their main interest with their brand ambassadors is having people who will sell cars for them, even if that means having to fulfil some cheesy or embarrassing obligations. I know he would have more time and right now he fulfils his obligations, but they're paying him supposedly around the $40-50m mark and he drives their car for them and does his driver commitments as well. I can definitely see how a numbers guy will question whether paying him 150% increase to do just one part of his current job makes financial sense for them?
