My 2000s/2010s kid medias wisdom:
Azula deserved a redemption arc and Ty Lee is the girl who got shafted by not being Zuko's love interest
The Soul Society is a military state and Ichigo was a good person for never joining it and Orihime was the best Bleach character
Sasuke was right and Kishimito made him an extremist as ableist victim blaming propaganda and Sakura and Hinata are equally good
Ben 10,including the sequels,is better than Danny Phantom
Flynn Ryder was a creep and a dickhead who didn't deserve Rapunzel
Hiccup was trans but so was Astrid, only transfem instead
Teen Titans is a beyond good show but the influence it's had on DC's comics is bad and Young Justice Animated should've never existed
The Hunger Games and Chronicles of Narnia derserve better than to be grouped in with Harry Potter because Thg is an anti-bigotry story rather than liberal bs and you can actually pull 'Death of the Author' with the problematic elements of Tcon because C.S Lewis is actually dead
Adventure Time is an almost perfect show and so're it's comics and sequel miniseries' and you can't pull 'It's bad because it got too serious in later seasons!!!' as a fact because that was the point, that it was trying to be different from most kids cartoons and it not being your thing dosen't mean it's not good writing
Winx Club,W.i.t.c.h,Totally Spies,The Powerpuff Girls,Kim Possible and MLP are feminist even if they have their flaws and they're brought in a girly packaging because they're meant to be heroes for little girls
Johnny Test is fine and y'all are weird fow visceral your reaction to it was
Percy Jackson and the Olympians dropped the ball by having Percy end up with Annabeth because they're 'destined to' since the point of Percy's story is that he never gets to choose what they actually want and they should've either ended up with Rachel or stayed single to work on character development and healing,Luke never actually cared about other demigods and was only using them as ammo against the gods because if he actually cared he wouldn't have abused them,Toa should've instead been a third Percy series of them destroying Olympus' corruption because they've had enough of the gods and replacing it with an actual good societal system and Percy is a super cool autistic Team Parent who'd be femme and kidcore if Rick bothered to develop their interests
Star Vs The Forces of Evil should've made trans Marco and autistic Star canon, endgamed them with Tom and Janna instead of eachother, made Jackie an mc and done none of that 'no magic' shit
Gravity Falls,We Bare Bears and Undertale/Deltarune's icon status are well-deserved
Craig of the Creek only gets ignored because it's a black show that's good
And She Ra and the Princesses of Power is called cringe nonstop because it's fanbase is largely wlw and trans women who're loud and proud with their queerness and the creator at the time of it's airing identified as a nonbinary lesbian and people hate female queerness while hyping up male kinds that play into stereotypes(Stiles and Derek from Teen Wolf,Magnus and Alec from The Mortal Instruments, the Shiro/Keith discourse, the Boyfriends Webtoon,Marauder's Era even being a thing, etc.Note that i am not calling Stevenson female but rather saying he knows what lesbophobic experiences are)

Of course Levi has a selfless and compassionate side, but objectively speaking, I don't think the manga/anime emphasizes these qualities as much as some people are exaggerated. For example, in the manga, the garrison soldier they captured during the uprising arc says that he even killed people he shouldn't have killed (I think those people were servants idk)
Or like in the trost arc when he doesn't react to the deaths of all those people who died in the chase for the female titan. There's a scene in the uprising arc where Hitch talks about this genocide and sort of berates him and his corps, but Levi doesn't react to it. He values human life, but not enough to talk about it or to go on about it.
He characterizes people who are inferior to him, who are not of equal status, as weak. In the Shiganshina arc he says he hates weak people.
I think his role in the anime is more of a supporting weapon character than these actions. He's more of someone who stands out in battles and with his strength. And he can play a supporting role in some characters, including the main character.
This may sound like slander, but that's not my point. My point is that in some fandoms, people tend to exaggerate one aspect of their favorites and either don't acknowledge or ignore their flaws or make excuses for them. In the anime and in interviews, we see Levi touch upon his compassionate and selfless aspects. But he also sometimes exhibits cruel, reckless actions on some issues.
No, the manga and anime makes it expressly clear how much Levi cares.
Levi didn't kill anyone during the Uprising arc outside of Kenny's squad, who were first trying to kill him and his squad. Purely self-defense and purely justifiable. He only hurt the people at the military base where they captured the soldier from. They didn't kill anyone there. These are Levi's exact words:
"Unfortunately for you, they won't be coming to your rescue. Killing them would've been a bother, so they'll just be off their feet for the time being."
This, accompanied by panels showing Levi's squad taking the soldiers out, only injuring, not killing, them.
Levi reacted during Trost. What are you talking about? We see a close up of Levi when the shit hits the fan, his expression clearly troubled and his fists clenched at his sides. His fists clenching is plainly highlighted because the reader is meant to understand that he's upset. A clear expression of anxiety and frustration at not being able to help.
Hitch is talking about the people that died during the incident in Trost, not a "genocide", and Levi takes full responsibility for it, making no excuses for what happened. Hitch is shocked because she thought Levi would try to make excuses and deny any responsibility, because she thought he was heartless, but he didn't, because he cares and he's just as upset as she is. She didn't expect that.
Just because he doesn't blubber and cry outwardly doesn't mean he isn't feeling anything. He knows it's messed up and that it went sideways when it wasn't ever meant to, just like so many of the missions the SC conducts.
When he says he "hates weak people", he means he hates the situation. He's frustrated and upset. He hates that these people who have no experience fighting titans are on this mission with them, because their ranks have been so thinned out, and because of that, they're likely to get killed. You have to pay attention to Levi's actions, not his words. Levi is known for not being good at expressing what he means when he speaks. His actions are what's important. He works himself to the point of exhaustion trying to save those people you say he "hates" for being weak. Does that seem like something someone would do who doesn't care about their lives?
The problem is, you just aren't paying enough attention to Levi's character, and further, you don't understand his character. You seem to need it said and spelled out in literal terms in order to pick up on what's going on, which, if that's the case, this isn't the story for you. Levi's emotion isn't blaring and in your face. It's subtle, but still obvious if you simply pay attention. You see it in his actions and expressions. We aren't exaggerating Levi's compassion and kindness, you just don't want to or aren't able to acknowledge it because it isn't spoon fed to you and it doesn't fit with your preconceived notion of who Levi is. You need to pay more attention in order to understand Levi, because he's a complex character, not the one-note "weapon" that you want to define him as.
You talk about bias and not being able to see clearly as a result, but your own bias is pretty evident on this topic. You get basic facts wrong and then present them as "evidence" for your claim that Levi is reckless and cruel. It's just that you don't understand him as a character.

hitch is jean in a different font
i might have a new WIP or two cooking, and one of them has me vibrating and combing over canon to make this argument: hitch as jean's shadow, their parallel journeys, her growth only a few months behind his. marlowe as a kind of marco, stohess as her trost.
for me it's all toward a reijean / hitchannie agenda but pray any hitch and jean stans appreciate:
Tumblr media
we meet hitch as an almost-jean: well-aware of what the military police actually is. pragmatic. in the anime's expansion of stohess, jean looks at the MPs scrambling and thinks, "i could've actually been one of them too, huh? just how did i end up here instead?"
the scene of marlowe and hitch cleaning up stohess is another anime addition, in the s2 premiere. marlowe is bewildered that titans were in sina to begin with, but hitch's focus is more mundane: "the worst thing about it all is that so many people died for no good reason." the hulu subtitles are more like "there's no official reason all these people died." levi echoes the sentiment in 59 when he bluntly tells them annie was the female titan: "no one knows a damn thing."
Tumblr media
levi trusts jean to feel them out for a reason, and i think hitch impressed him way more than marlowe. he respects her disgust for loss of life, and her balls to blame the survey corps for it. she's actually a mini nile dawk there, to me, when nile realizes what erwin is up to in stohess, and it makes me think that jean's pragmatism is a necessary injection of the MPs' better traits into the suicidal SC. that it's in the same chapter as jean and armin recovering from their run-in with the interior squad is telling.
Tumblr media
in the 125 hitch/annie date, annie is looking up at the colossals, and hitch literally grounds her. annie is struck by their height, maybe she thinks of bertolt, maybe she's thinking of her mission to prevent this from happening, but hitch doesn't give a shit about the titans themselves, only what they leave in their wake. it feels similar to jean telling eren about marco's death in 22. marco instilled in jean that a leader is honest about what they ask people to die for; hitch is disgusted by the senselessness of the death her whole career has been about cleaning up.
Tumblr media
i think it's easy to look at hitch yawning among the jaegerists in 139 as a bit of her cockroach quality—keeping her head down and saluting along for her survival among fascists, like shadis advises the recruits who beat him (also in 125). but we have seen her demonstrate such kindness, and mourn. practically, she must be pissed that the junta she and marlowe risked themselves to install has been totally upended; she stands by her actions in the uprising arc, look at how she and armin witness zackly's assassination. but beyond that, she hates death more than anything. she could reason that marlowe's death was toward something tangible, the truth of their world, but that it snowballed into the death of most of the world? the rumbling is probably a national holiday to those freaks. it's ghoulish to her.
for my ship agenda (even if you're into these relationships only platonically):
hitch talking to annie's crystal feels like jean saving reiner in shiganshina. everyone else was ready to discard or forget about these traitors, but hitch, jean, and armin all cling to the softness they couldn't reconcile with annie and reiner's titan forms. with what he thought were his dying breaths, reiner delivered ymir's letter. on her day off, in Wall Sina, Goodbye, annie kept her word, and tried to reunite a father and daughter. hitch might have negged her for it, seen it as busy work, but it's the same kindness she bullied marlowe for, if carefully buried under annie's insistence that it was just the quid pro quo between them.
idc that armin talked to her, too, or he knew her longer. hitch fuckin mourned her!! and i think being angry with annie, questioning her for four years, is way, way more humanizing than armin basically monologuing at her while feeling sorry for himself and bertolt and titan shifters generally. (this sounds like i hate armin but swear i love him; i just think aruani is most interesting when bertolt is involved.)
hitch accurately clocks that annie seemed afraid of getting close to people. her own fellow cadets just thought of her as distant, bored; when hange asks the scouts in the 104th about RBA's interactions as cadets, they're at a loss, even armin. even her fellow warriors didn't really see her. annie's distance was a kindness, and her own armor. she sees reibert's deep cover as a waste of time, but i think she also sees they're bound to hurt themselves and their mission in the long run. even though everyone felt betrayed after stohess, reiner was a greater shock, a deeper wound. i think annie wanted to minimize hurt on all fronts. (look how she dips out of the alliance, it's because she's tired, and doesn't want to kill eren, or anyone.)
jean comes to understand reiner only after he and connie and armin have to kill their 104th classmates at the pier. hitch can't fully fathom annie's circumstances or pain, especially not annie saying she'd do it all again, but hitch listens to it all and thanks her for the vulnerability, for softening, which is more compassion than most of the paradis side of the alliance has managed so far. she has a head start on the emotional strides jean makes in between 127 and 133, maybe because she got a bit of catharsis beating her fists against annie's crystal for four years.

Ruby is a rare type of protagonist
This is gonna be long, you’ve been warned!
I am a grown ass adult woman. I like female protagonists, I prefer watching them and relating to them, and always have.
I’ve watched a lot of animes since my teenage years, upwards of 400 last I counted on MyAnimeList a few years ago. I’ve been to Tokyo - twice - and spent at least 20 hours scouring the anime stores of Akihabara. I paid the Japanese mailing service to send a Saber figurine back to my home country since it was too big to bring in my luggage. (This one!)
Why does this matter and what does it have to do with Ruby? Read on:
During my years of being an utterly anime fanatic, I started to grow bored. After 400 animes, you’ve seen most of the plot twists. Most of the stereotypical personalities. All the classics have been watched and rewatched. The story beats, even if presented in a new packaging, becomes predictable.
You start to see the patterns, so to say. I’ve been hyped more times than I can count, only to be disappointed when yet another promising series took a predictable, cliché turn with its story or characters. It may not be sudden, sometimes it happens several episodes or even a few seasons into the show. So you never know for sure until having spent a lot of time watching.
There are a lot of GREAT animes with male protagonists, but how rare isn’t it to find one that does NOT build towards the guy being needing to become stronger than his enemies and winning some important final fight? (as is common in shounen in general)
As time went by I found myself getting more and more picky with what I wanted to spend time watching. I prefer shows with the cool, badass, strong girls, since those are the ones I enjoy watching and them being girls makes it easier for me to relate and enjoy their achievements.
Cool...
Tumblr media
Badass...
Tumblr media
...strong girls.
Tumblr media
These are what I want. Finding them, however, can be tedious work, especially in the role as main protagonists.
In the anime world, there are some common tendencies with strong female characters:
1) The badass female character is either a side-kick to the male protagonist, eventually become overshadowed by a male protagonist, OR in some cases by some new girl, because heaven forbid any of the cool girls get developed beyond their one single character arc. (ex. Fate/Zero, A Certain Magical Index, Shakugan no Shana, Koutetsujou no Kabaneri, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan, any anime with a harem, and so many others - they can still be good shows though, that’s not the point!)
2) There are great animes out there with great female protagonists, however they are usually either a) sexualized (ex. Kill la Kill) or b) shows geared towards kids (ex. Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, The Owl Hourse (yes, I’m putting this here even if it’s not an anime) or c) romance focused (ex. Revolutionary Girl Utena). I love these shows for other reasons though!
3) The actually great action animes with badass female protagonists that are allowed to develop and not be overshadowed by their crush/secret male protagonist etc. do exist, but are sadly few and far between. (Soul Reaper is pretty great with Maka, although BlackStar steals a lot of space, and I prefer the anime for this exact reason. A Certain Scientific Railgun was my fav for a long time, but sadly Mikoto is in love with the harem protagonist of the main show and gets overshadowed whenever he’s involved.)
And it doesn’t matter if the show is named after the girl(s) or not!
Here are two girls, each with their own anime named after them (Railgun/Index). Guess who’s the most important character who actually drives the main story?
Tumblr media
Shakugan no Shana: Yes, Shana is the name of the girl. Guess which character gets the most power-ups and biggest development?
Tumblr media
There’s nothing wrong with liking these shows, I mean I watched them too, and I enjoyed them for the most part... but sometimes I just... whish the dude would stay a side-kick?
So, first impression of RWBY was... cautious optimism?
When I first watched RWBY, because an online friend suggested it, I was surprised to find four strong female protagonists - and Ruby presented as the main protagonist what with the very first episode being named after her and there was no guy in sight.
Seems good? Even if the animation is super wonky. Ruby is cool. I like her. She has an awesome weapon too and is competent with it. She even bites back at people instead of becoming submissive. She gets saved in first episode yes, but it was by an adult woman after a woman took over the fight from Roman.
Also no fanservicy panty shots, suggestive angles and what-not? Seems promising.
Tumblr media
But I’d seen this before. A show starts out with a cool, interesting, badass girl as the main protagonist. Then at some point some guy gets introduced, and it turns out he’s special, and she crushes on him, and then he gets stronger, and now she’s his side-kick, and more girls come along, and everything keeps scaling upwards forever (except the original girl), you get the idea.
Then the show turned into some hybrid of Harry Potter x Sailor Moon x high school anime spinoff wannabe with questionable quality? Okay, but maybe with these interesting girls and some cool plot it can work?
The Jaundice episodes seemed to fulfill the prophecy and I lost interest halfway through. Yes, even if the episodes were just 6 minutes long.
I dropped RWBY and didn’t touch it again for several years.
By this point V4 had just finished. I was bored one day, and I decided to give RWBY another chance.
Got past V1 and V2. It was better than I remembered. Got to V3 and... oh no, is Pyrrha gonna do the “stealing the protagonist role” thing?
Ugh. I hate when shows trade out their main characters for new ones because they can’t figure out how to develop the ones they already have. Pyrrha is fine, but I’m already commited to team RWBY you know? Pyrrha is so OP compared to the others, it won’t be fun watching her just demolish every single foe ever, especially if she’s gonna have magic as well. It’ll just be her special story along with her romantic story with Jaune. She is going to overshadow team RWBY and then what, is Jaune gonna come along and do the same to her eventually?
With little faith left, I pressed on to episode 9, 10, 11, and... holy shit.
Tumblr media
HOLY SHIT!
Tumblr media
They really did that, didn’t they? They really made me think they were incompetent, cliché writers and all that. That they were gonna focus on Pyrrha and Jaune going forwards because they had no idea how to tell a compelling story with the girls they’d already established as “main protagonists”.
And then they a) Killed off the “ace student” promised for greatness and b) destroyed the High School setting and c) Allowed the bad guys to win and d) Introduced an actual competent villain AND e) Gave new depth to team RWBY and Ruby in particular.
Tumblr media
I was HOOKED. I realized RWBY is a show that allows its protagonists to take a backseat now and then, only to hit hard with the actual meaningful stuff. Developing and letting side characters shine as well, so that it doesn’t seem like team RWBY are the only characters with purpose in this world.
Cause no matter how special or strong or high on the political ladder they are, no character in RWBY has all the answers, nor do they have any means to actually stop Salem.
They still don’t!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby has her silver eyes, but they didn’t “save” Beacon, or Pyrrha, or Penny, or Atlas. Actually, they may be more a curse than anything, now knowing about the Hound and what Salem can do to silver-eyed warriors. Not even a meaningful curse in the “I’ll become a cool vampire” type of curse, but just... horrible! No! Do not want this! Actually bad curse!
Ruby can’t solve this alone. She’s not all-powerful, she isn’t the shounen protagonist who always powers up in a pinch, she’s not the Maiden of all Maidens, she doesn’t always have the answers, she’s not Ozpin’s host or Salem’s Chosen or any of those clichés. That’s not the point of her character and the story we’re being told.
Ruby, like everyone else in this story, has to train, and learn, and fail, and do mistakes, and be wrong, and correct herself, and try again, and do better next time, and trust, take risks, experience loss and helplessness, and we have not seen the end of her development. I’m hyped for V9 not because of new fights, power-ups or what-not, but because I’m excited to see what Ruby has learned from their failures so far, how they’ll pick themselves up, and how they’ll try to approach the defeating of Salem.
Because at this point in time, they have no idea how to do any of it, and that’s what excites me most about RWBY and Ruby’s character in particular.
Ruby does not have all the answers, but she’s trying anyway, because the alternative is to give up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s 17 years old and has been thrust into war against a foe that can’t die, into a role of leadership she has no grasp on how to handle. She’s trying to learn from those around her, imperfect human beings as they too are. She’s doing her best, and although she happens to have special Grimm-melting laser beam eyes, that won’t stop Salem. It won’t save Remnant from the gods.
“What are you?” is going to be a very interesting question to explore in V9.
Ruby is a rare type of protagonist because she’s not the answer to every problem, she’s not the Chosen One solely able to save the world. Yet she’s also not overshadowed or sidelined by someone else. Her story intrigues me more than anyone else’s, in any other show I’ve seen.

Anime I think each of the Host Club members would like:
Tamaki - Your Lie in April - Classical music, young love, the focus on the piano, and the touch of devastation? He’s grabbing the tissues and holding Haruhi extra tight the next time he sees her. He watches it every April.
Kyoya - Death Note - It’s secretly a partial autobiography, but the ending had to be changed with Light getting caught because if he wasn’t, then people would be on the hunt for Kyoya, and between Tamaki, the Host Club, and being the best in class, he doesn’t want the Japanese police force annoying him too.
Haruhi - Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san - This is a very lowkey and chill anime based on the real life experiences of the author. I think Haruhi would jive with the low intensity, big bookworm vibes, “are you shitting me right now?” experiences. Haruhi could probably relate on some level with being in the Host Club. It’s her favorite series to have on in the background while cleaning.
Hikaru - Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun - Hanako-kun is a little shit, and so is Hikaru. The colors are bright, the antics are funny, and there are also a few intense moments he would get wrapped up in.
Kaoru - Sword Art Online - Kaoru would enjoy the initial video game/virtual reality setup of the anime, and would get sucked in by the characters passing levels and moving through the game. He can describe in detail every arc to anyone who dares ask, and by less than halfway through, the person doesn’t bother to ask him if there are any other anime he likes. (Which is all according to plan, because he’s also a big romance fan, but he needs to keep up his image. He’s obsessed with Toradora)
Honey - Attack on Titan - Is it cute and cuddly? No. But does it feature a badass short guy who absolutely wrecks everyone’s shit and is known for being the World’s Strongest? Yes. Dispel the thought that Honey is only into cutesy things.
Mori - Demon Slayer! - The animation and the colors are insaaane, add to that all of the different fighting techniques? Mori’s hooked. He has a crush on the butterfly girl, Shinobu Kocho (but honestly, who doesn’t).
Bonus - Renge - Fruits Basket - She envisions herself as Tohru, though this girl would NOT be able to survive outside in a tent, bathing in the river. But all the male characters and very few female characters? Yaaaah, she’s happy with this show. Bonus x 2 - her favorite is Ayame.

Who the fuck is jaquie convent
Jaqie is mentioned a couple of times in the HP books, most notably, in Philosopher's Stone, on page 237. She was an accomplished beater, and James' ex (ah, those Slytherin/Gryffindor romances). She has extensive stage experience, and remains cool and collected under pressure. She's also dabbled in accounting at one time!
Oh, I almost forgot! She can also be seen in the Female Titan arc in Attack on Titan anime, in episode 21 at the 11:34 timestamp.

You're bored?? You know what that means? ✨Interview time✨
At what point in the anime/manga did you start shipping AruAni and what drew you to this particular couple?
OHHH HI THANK YOU FOR ASKING UWUWUWU
I started shipping them as soon as I watched the first season of the anime with the female titan arc 😊 I loved the characters individually because:
- armin: super insecure, the weak one, feels like a burden... baby that's me... also cutie (I fell in love with him so much)
- annie: misfit, mysterious, emo vibes... stunning gurrrl 🙏 also I am very self conscious about my nose and it felt great to see a bit of diversity in her still being so pretty
as soon as I started seeing aruani fanart online I became super obsessed haha I had them as my wallpapers, profile pics and banners... I bought an Armin plushie that I still have ❤️
I love that they're both broken in their own way (I don't love that they suffer but I love that kind of characters ok??? hsgdddhs) They are very different but they understand and complete eachother and the dynamic is so cool and cute and the tension and !!!! probably the same reasons that everybody has to love them hahaha
Thanks again 😊😊

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks...
Omg hi! First of all thanks for asking! I haven’t answered this question before and I absolutely do not mind answering this. This is a tough one though because I’ve consumed so much media and love so many characters it’s so difficult to choose but I will give it a shot nonetheless. Also these ten characters are not in any particular order.
Laurent Of Vere: Laurent is introduced as the frigid and dangerous prince of Vere in the book 1 of the captive prince trilogy. I HATED this man on my first reading but as the trilogy progressed, I just fell in love with him. He had an astounding amount of growth and character development. Not to mention his qualities and traits make him an all around admirable character. I may not be putting the characters in this list in order but Laurent is definitely my favourite character of all time.
Fleabag: Fleabag from Fleabag is another character I deeply love. She is funny, she is selfish, she is a tragedy of her own doing. It’s the way she is so deeply flawed yet so damn loveable at the same time that gets me. We are all fleabag at the end of the day aren’t we?
Baz: Baz from Carry On trilogy had to be here like the list won’t be complete without my poor little meow meow. He is one of those few characters who is very very close to my heart and it so hard to not love this dramatic gay vampire. Just love his snark and he is so funny??? I love it so much. Not to mention he truly is one of the kindest characters I’ve read.
Penelope Bunce: Another character from the Carry On trilogy. Penelope means the world to me because as a brown person, I don’t get to read a lot of books which feature brown characters. So seeing a character who is the best friend of the protagonist and has a major role in the series, it’s very refreshing and reassuring to me. Penelope is smart, stubborn, never admits she might be wrong but her growth over the three books is amazing. I will always love her.
Eren Yeager: literally one of the most tragic characters I’ve seen till date. As the protagonist (antagonist? anti hero? Idk anymore) of attack on titan, Eren is one of the most iconic characters I’ve come across till date. His unconditional devotion for his friends and his character arc from being the righteous hero to someone who becomes completely disillusioned by the end, it’s fucking amazing.
Geto Suguru: I have a beef with Jujutsu Kaisen and the reason is that Gege Akutami came up with absolutely amazing characters only to under-utilise and shit on their character arcs with his half assed plot. Surprisingly though, Geto’s character arc is amazing. I love it when heroes lose the sight of their goals and become the villains instead and Geto does that. His character development is really good and I love him for that. Incredibly realistic and refreshing to see.
Jiang Cheng: Jiang Cheng from MDZS remains one of the most relatable characters I’ve come across ever. Like I feel him on a spiritual level. The complexity and depth of his emotions, his actions, being so fucking good but never being good enough… good lord my heart straight up bleeds for him. I will always love Jiang Cheng.
Xue Yang: Hear me out okay. I know Xue Yang from MDZS is a psychopath. I’m not a Xue Yang apologist either. What he did to Xingchen was appalling to say the least. But Xue Yang is undoubtedly an incredibly well written character. He loved or should I say obsessed over XXC in such a sick and twisted way, it made for a very interesting read. The way he deluded even himself into believing that his extreme actions were all to torment XXC and not because he enjoyed his company and liked him… like girl be ffr right now who tf are you kidding. But yeah love me an insane psychotic gremlin.
Violet Evergarden: Violet from Violet Evergarden is one of the most heartbreaking characters I’ve come across and also one of the most unique. I’m a sucker for stories that tell the most human stories and Violet as a child soldier discovering these emotions, thoughts and vivid lives of people while coming to terms with her own trauma really gives her a special place in my heart.
Howl: Howl from Howls Moving Castle is one of my favorites because he is a hot babygirl. As simple as that.
Thanks so much for asking! Sorry it took me a while to get back to you but I hope you liked this list 💗💗💗

FMAB / AoT Comparisons and Contrasts
I was holding off on making this post because I didn’t have enough evidence to compare EVERY aspect from both franchises, but I feel like I have enough evidence to at least explore the similarities between a majority of the main characters and a couple locations. That said, I reserve the right to make a second part to this post if I feel like it.
OKAY! SO!
Because I am an avid, hardcore fan of both Attack on Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist, I began to look compare and contrast characters from both series and oh my goodness the similarities are uncanny- like, y’all, I’m so convinced Isayama took inspiration from FMA, I’d be shocked if he didn’t.
Before I get into anything, I should point out that someone has already made a couple of these observations already in a Reddit post, but I’m just adding onto these findings. Link to the OG post is below.
SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT FINISHED EITHER SHOW!!
Alright, so to start off in terms of characters, we’ve got Edward Elric and Eren Jaeger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’re both hot-tempered kids who lose their moms and see her suffer in horrific ways.
Their dads also technically walked out on them early on in their lives.
They also lose body parts but get them back at some point.
The deaths of their mothers trigger their character arcs, starting with how? Enlisting in the military.
Then there’s Winry Rockbell and Mikasa Ackerman:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Childhood friends/love interests whose parents died at a young age.
They care deeply about the protagonists.
They’re also terrifying when angry.
Alphonse Elric and Armin Arlert:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blonde, smart, sensible characters who are almost always by the protagonists’ side.
Got an absolute GLOW-UP as they got older.
Trisha Elric and Carla Jaeger:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mothers to the protagonists who have the signature “dead anime mom” hairstyle.
Died while the protagonists were young.
Their deaths prompted their sons’ character arcs. (If not the entirety of both series.)
Unaware of their husbands’ past.
Van Hohenheim and Grisha Jaeger:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fathers to the protagonists who walk out on their families at an early age.
Both wear glasses and have somewhat? long hair.
Both were either directly or indirectly responsible for murder at some point.
Under the heel of a higher power too. (Grisha with Marley and Hohenheim with Xerxes.)
Jean Havoc and Jean Kirstein:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are literally the same characters, just different shows.
Same first name, same haircut, same mannerisms, SAME ENGLISH VA-
Also kinda got a glow up as they got older.
Once again, if I had a nickel for every time Mike McFarland voiced a character named Jean with an undercut and playboy tendencies, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right??
Roy Mustang and Levi Ackerman:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cool, collected and unbelievably badass heartthrobs with black hair and high military ranks.
Also terrifying when pissed off.
Riza Hawkeye and Hange Zoe:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second in command that’s usually by their superior’s side.
Also unbelievably badass.
People may or may not ship them with their superior.
Erwin Smith and King Bradley:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I honestly could not find much similarities between these two except for the fact that they’re both leaders of their military division?
And they both die in the end I guess.
Maes Hughes and Marco Bodt:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kind, gentle hearted ally of the protagonists who find out the truth about their enemies before anyone else and dies because of it.
Lust and Annie Leonhart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Female antagonists that get dealt with early on in their series.
Capable of regeneration of their body.
Brings harm to the protagonist’s ally at one point. (Lust with Hughes and Annie with Marco.)
Gluttony and Bertholdt Hoover:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Male antagonists who are usually around or involved with their female partner one way or another (Bertholdt with Annie / Gluttony with Lust).
Care for their female partner a lot.
Both are killed by being eaten by someone (Bertholdt is eaten by Armin / Gluttony is eaten by Pride), but not before desperately crying out for their female partner (Bertholdt cries out for Annie / Gluttony cries out for Lust).
Scar and Reiner Braun:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scorned men and enemies of the protagonist who eventually come after them to get revenge for their homeland(?).
Turn around and become good(?) in the end, fighting alongside the protagonists’ allies against a common but VERY different enemy (Reiner with Eren / Scar with Father).
Truth and Ymir Fritz:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beings from another realm that interact with the protagonist one way or another.
Aid the protagonist realize their full potential, for better (Edward) and for worse (Eren).
Homunculi and Titan Shifters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mysterious beings with regenerative properties and unique powers.
Their powers can be transferred to new users if the previous users dies(?) (Ex. Greed with Ling / Eating a Titan Shifter as a pure Titan).
I swear I am not crazy, I just have an unhealthy obsession with both of these shows. Making a part two shortly.

Hello, Ninjago fandom, while we impatiently wait for the second half of Crystalized to be released, may I interest you in some good old nostalgic shows with familiar Canadian voice actors to pass the time. Ironically, Sam Vincent (Lloyd’s VA) is in every single one of my suggested shows and in 3 of the 4, he’s got a lead role. XD
Also, I need more people to revive some of these old fandoms! Please hear me out while I info dump! The options get better as we go along since I firmly believe in saving the best for last. I hope you like my long ramble.
First off, we have Slugterra:
Tumblr media
This show had a pretty good run with multiple seasons and specials. It’s a good action show and enjoyable for passing the time. I binge watched it while reading through my driver’s training stuff. A solid Saturday morning-esque show.
As far as notable characters and voice actors go, we’ve got:
Eli Shane voiced by Sam Vincent (Lloyd’s VA): he’s the main guy and very comparable to Lloyd since he’s got daddy issues. Poor guy spends forever trying to locate his dad while at the same time filling the role as hero and protector of the Caverns. Also, he’s the reason this show got so many female viewers. Those simps.
Dr. Thaddeus Blakk voiced by Mark Oliver (Garmadon’s VA): he’s the typical big bad villain type. A bit bland but it’s hilarious to listen to if you’re a Ninjago fan because all you end up hearing is Lloyd vs. Garmadon half the time.
Kord Zane voiced by Andrew Francis (Morro’s VA): he’s a troll and the muscle and mechanic of the main group. Not much to say about him. He’s a sweet, protective dude. Also, I just like that he’s got the name Kord Zane since I’m a huge Zane fan.
Trixie Sting voiced by Shannon Chan-Kent (Racer Seven’s VA): she’s neat and seems to be the second in command to Eli. She’s you’re typical strong female character type. Good news is that there’s no annoying trope that she is in love with the main guy though.
Pronto voiced by Lee Tockar (Borg’s VA): he fits the comedic relief trope really well. Unfortunately, he’s borderline annoying for me. I don’t have anything really notable to say about him. You just gotta tolerate him. Occasionally he has his uses.
Junjie voiced by Vincent Tong (Kai’s VA): he’s not a main character but I really love him and the Asian influence the show goes through when he’s around. Cool dude that also has so much trauma packed into him when you think about all he went through. You’ll understand if you watch.
Burpy is the iconic slug of the series. A 10/10 character. Loyal as ever and super adorable. Sassy when he wants to be.
Pros of this show:
Adorable side character slugs with awesome powers
Elemental slugs!!
a whole arc about trying to free a place from an evil emperor (sound familiar?)
Teaches against animal cruelty.
Shadow creatures that for once aren’t evil villains.
So many other familiar side characters with Ninjago VA’s. It’s honestly just fun to see how many familiar voices you can pick out.
Interesting concept, lore, and world building if you dig deep enough and overanalyze everything.
Cool fights and slug shootouts.
Action with a side of found family is always a plus.
Solid team dynamics and brotherly teasing.
A bonus is that there’s very little romance in this show. Very refreshing to see.
Next we have a forgotten classic, Class of the Titans:
Tumblr media
This show had two seasons and had a decent ending. It definitely deserved more run time because there really aren’t that many animated shows about Greek Mythology that are kid friendly. A big main crew with a few familiar Ninjago voice actors sprinkled in for the fun of it. Another Saturday morning-esque show but with a better feel of having an overarching plot than Slugterra did in my opinion.
They have so many character tropes that create the whole main crew so I’m going to try to go through them quickly.
Jay voiced by Kirby Morrow (Cole’s VA): the level-headed leader. Very similar to how Cole started out as team leader. Also, it’s just funny for Ninjago fans to see a character named Jay be voiced by Cole’s voice actor.
Theresa voiced by Kelly Sheridan (Gayle Gossip’s VA or better known for playing Barbie): a psychic seer who is Jay’s love interest (reminds me of Barbie and the Nutcracker solely bc of the voice actors). I wish I liked her more, especially since she’s a seer like Zane. Honestly, neither girl characters really stand out to me but they’re nice to have around.
Atlanta voiced by Meghan Black in season one: the action archer girl who has super speed. She’s neat and very strong-willed. (Side note: I find it funny that every main character girl I’ve mentioned so far are all redheads.)
Odie voiced by Doron Bell Jr. (Griffin’s VA): the smart tech guy. He has his uses and sassy moments. It’s also funny to see what was considered high tech back in the mid 2000s.
Herry voiced by Ty Olsson: your typical strong, protective, big brother guy trope. He’s got a really awesome, scrappy grandma.
Neil voiced by Ted Cole: the self-absorbed guy who serves as comedic relief a good portion of the time. Some might find him annoying but he has his high points and is genuinely funny. He’s not a fighter at all and is dubbed “the lucky one.” And boy, is he lucky indeed.
Archie voiced by Sam Vincent (Lloyd’s VA): my personal favorite. He’s an occasional jerk but he’s genuinely an adorkable guy. I relate to his whole “wonky ankle” thing, but he’s a great warrior regardless (and the second fastest on the team? How?). He’s got a huge crush on Atlanta which is amusing and sometimes cringy to watch.
Cronus voiced by David Kaye: the main villain of the show. Typical wicked guy who wants to end the kids who are prophesied to defeat him. I know there’s a good number of simps for him. It’s hilarious how much this god loathes this group of kids but is also genuinely terrified of them, especially Jay.
Pros:
If you’re missing Cole’s voice actor, this is the show to watch.
The entire show is free on YouTube Very imaginative spin on some of the Greek gods like Dionysius to make it kid friendly. And wait til you see Hades.
Still, they aren’t afraid to show the gods can be petty and vengeful.
Greek mythology! What more could you want?
I personally love the way they showcase so many Greek characters and creatures. Is it sometimes off? Yes. Is it still enjoyable to watch? YES!
Interesting battles and solutions.
Will show death and the occasional bloody injury. (Not overtly graphic though so don’t worry.)
The poor kids, similar to Lloyd, are prophecy bound to defeat the evil villain and thus have their lives turned upside to become heroes fighting monsters. Theresa eventually throws a somewhat justified hissy fit over this.
Enjoyable characters and team dynamics. So much sibling teasing between everyone and it’s so relatable to watch.
Also, they’re just teens being teens so they do stupid stuff sometimes and that just makes it all the more fun to watch.
A bonus, there’s two girls on the team rather than your stereotypical one main girl trope.
A big favorite of mine, Storm Hawks:
Tumblr media
Oh look, another red head character with green eyes. And he’s the lead character voiced by Sam Vincent! XD Here me out though, this show is actually great. If you can get past the funky character designs and animation, it’s a genuinely fun show. It’s so imaginative and for me, it ticks all the right tropes. I would like to say that if you’re a Ninjago fan, you just might be able to like Storm Hawks. It’s a show that I rewatch again and again and still enjoy it. Fans of it will say it ended to soon with only two seasons and an open conclusion that leaves room for more adventures. I wish there was more. The flow was good and I felt it followed a decent overarching plot with quirky filler episodes thrown in to establish the characters more.
Now as far as main characters go, we have a good mix of interesting ones. Yes, they fall into stereotypical archetypes but for some reason, I really like them:
Aerrow voiced by Sam Vincent (Lloyd’s VA: the young, ambitious Sky Knight of the Storm Hawks. He’s your typical, altruistic hero/leader/chosen one. I love how you can really see how much he cares for his team. He’s got a big legacy to live up to and you know what, he’s absolutely demolishing everyone’s limited expectations of him. This boy survived multiple fights with the supposedly deadliest warrior in the world.
Piper voiced by Chiara Zanni: she’s the intelligent one of the bunch and typically possesses the one brain cell they all share. She’s the navigator, crystal expert, and the second in command. In short, she’s an adorable nerd and my favorite despite having some out of character moments. I also like the little something something she’s got going on with Aerrow. Yes, it’s cliché but it’s open enough that you can interpret it romantically or platonically. And honestly, the way Piper is written, you could almost say she’s bi. But holy cow, that finale with her and Aerrow was everything! Love it.
Junko voiced by Colin Murdock (Ed’s VA aka Jay’s dad): the stereotypical gentle giant type. He’s sweet and strong but constantly doubts his ability because he was bullied. He’s similar to Kord from Slugterra in that he’s got muscle but also serves as the airship’s mechanic. He has a couple of spotlight episodes that do his character justice.
Finn voiced by Matt Hill (Hyper-Sonic’s VA aka that random disco head racer from Prime Empire): on the outside, when paired with Junko, they typically serve as the meat headed comic relief. However, when it comes down to it, Finn is selfless and will make the right choice as episodes have shown. He can get annoying but I highly appreciate that he knows how to buckle down and get a job done and he truly is a great sharpshooter.
Stork voiced by Scott McNeil (VA for many villains in Ninjago): one of the fan favorites for his doom and gloom sort of attitude. He’s the pilot and gives off emo vibes to me. A very relatable character for most pessimists. He’s the oldest of the crew full of kids but he sticks it out through all their wild adventures even if he is completely terrified while trying to survive. Still, he’s got a beserk button so don’t you ever think of touch his precious ship, the Condor. He can and will take out a complete armada.
Radarr voiced by Asaph Fipke: he’s Aerrow’s co-pilot and animal companion of the show. He’s very scrappy and has good intuition. A valuable member of the Storm Hawks. He even gets a couple of his own episodes to shine in.
Now, I gotta mention the villains too since there is a quirky handful of them:
Cyclonis voiced by Lenore Zann: she’s the lead villain and ruler of her kingdom at just 14 years old. She’s very powerful and very intimidating when she wants to be since she’s got a bunch of wacky crystal powers like Piper. I find her interesting just because she’s a young girl who serves as the main big bad villain versus previous shows where it’s a broad-shouldered middle aged guy in a black suit. I wish they showed more on her backstory but a decent villain nonetheless. Comparable to Harumi in that she’s a female kid villain who is deep down broken and lonely and in desperate need of therapy and a friend.
Dark Ace voiced by Sam Vincent (Lloyd’s VA): is the second in command to Cyclonis and is extremely loyal to her. He’s constantly getting beat by Aerrow and can never manage to exterminate him much to his annoyance. It’s hilarious watching their fights because it’s just Sam Vincent alternating between tones. He’s got cool red eyes and I do believe he also has a bit of a following among the female fans.
Ravess voiced by Cathy Weseluck (Patty Keys VA aka that random sales lady): she’s an archer who has a penchant for the violin. I love her leitmotif whenever she comes onscreen. Ambitious but still scared to turn on her 14 year old boss. She does play a helpful role I towards the finale.
Snipe voiced by Colin Murdock (Ed’s VA): he’s the brother of Ravess and serves as the big dumb muscle guy. I don’t really care for him but his sibling interactions with Ravess are funny.
Raptors voiced by a bunch of familiar VAs: I just had to mention this reptilian group because they are reminiscent of the Serpentine from Ninjago.
Pros:
Great side characters and fun episodes.
Good action and adventure vibes
The whole show is free on YouTube.
Again, world building and lore is very imaginative. It deserved a larger budget and more seasons.
Has your typical chosen/prophesied one narrative that we’ve all come to either love or hate.
Crystal magic (kinda like how we’re now on the season Crystalized)
Adorable main cast who all get a chance in the spotlight, and even the annoying ones do have their high points like I mentioned.
Ninjago VA’s are everywhere in this show too. And with the limited voices they have, they really make the most of it but it’s hilarious to see VA’s essentially talking to themselves onscreen.
And once again, there’s top notch team dynamics in this show with good sibling-like interactions between characters. They squabble but still make up and really care for each other’s wellbeing.
Found family trope is in this and it’s great and I’m a sucker for it. It’s heavily implied the three human kid heroes are orphans so there’s that lovely dose of angst I always love.
Something about Aerrow being a leader just hits right. He’s a great one even if he is just 14 years old.
Good balance between high stakes and humor. The main characters are kids and heroes and it shows with all the shenanigans they manage to throw themselves into.
Great finale. Trust me. The show gets better as you continue to watch it and the episodes get less disjointed.
Friends to lovers or just really close friends trope between Aerrow and Piper. I cannot stop gushing about how natural their dynamic feels and how they play off each other’s energy beautifully. They communicate openly and really well with each other. And if romance isn’t your thing, their bond can totally be seen as platonic.
Cyclonis is a curious villain character that is different from your stereotypical guy cartoon villain. I like her and her powers.
Huge bonus that Ninjago has struggled with doing well, love triangles. Storm Hawks has no place for that. In fact, it subverts that trope entirely! Piper does not act all jealous whenever there is another girl character around and this is a huge breath of fresh air from the pettiness many shows contain. Aerrow occasionally acts wary and annoyed when Piper gushes over stuck up guys, but it’s proven justified and he isn’t overprotective or obnoxious about it. Just cautious and comforting when things do go south.
And lastly, this underrated masterpiece, The Deep:
Tumblr media
Great news, this show is still ongoing and recently released their 4th season. It’s got a decent overarching narrative of searching for a lost underwater city Lemuria. There are many filler episodes, but trust me, they are fun. Not gonna lie, I’m a huge sucker for any ocean animated shows. This one is just so funny and relatable. It’s got great family dynamics with many familiar Ninjago voice actors. The adventures and creatures are all so cool! It ties myth, mystery, and science all into one great show. The sci-fi fantasy vibe is amazing. But basically, my liking of this show is hugely centered on not just the creativity of it but the strong family dynamics that glues the entire show together. Unlike most shows where parents are absent or there’s only one, this cartoon portrays a lovely married couple and their kids. Seriously, how often does the chosen one/protagonist of the show actually get a decent childhood with loving parents?!
With characters, we have a small main cast with a handful of recurring side characters. This means, you gotta love the main characters:
Antaeus Nekton aka Ant voiced by Vincent Tong (Kai’s VA): he’s the excitable main protagonist child and chosen one of the family. He’s extremely curious and gets into trouble often, but fortunately for him, he’s got an intelligent engineering mind that helps him get out of trouble… most times. Fortunately for him though, he’s got a great family backing him up. I find him to be a likable character as far as protagonists go and good representation of annoying younger siblings.
Fontaine Nekton voiced by Ashleigh Ball (Sally’s VA aka that pink-haired girl from Crystalized): she’s the older sister character. Sometimes she acts as the only voice of reason onboard the ship. I find her extremely relatable. It’s clear that although Ant annoys her, she still very much loves him and will do anything to protect him and that is so wholesome. She’s got a crush on Finn who’s a slick teen pirate voiced by Sam Vincent (Lloyd’s VA) and most of the fandom really loves the flirty dynamic they have. I gotta admit, they are pretty cute together.
William Nekton aka Will voiced by Michael Dobson (VA for many Ninjago side characters): he is the dad and the muscle of the crew. Still, like everyone else, he’s smart. He’s super reasonable and a really great example of a good father and husband. He has his funny moments and craziness too though.
Kaiko Nekton voiced by Kathleen Barr (Misako’s VA): this woman is my personal favorite and I could gush on and on about how totally awesome she is. Unlike Misako, Kaiko is the most awesome mother ever to her kids and is fiercely protective of them. She has a wide skill set from being a submarine pilot, mechanic, and marine biologist. In short, she’s amazing and I’m a huge simp for her.
Jeffrey: he’s the adorable animal sidekick. He’s an intelligent, expressive fish and has helped saved the Nekton family on multiple occasions. Very relatable because he is cookie-motivated. Smarter than your average wannabe pirate.
Nereus voiced by Lee Tockar (Borg’s VA): he’s your typical mystical old dude with a long white beard. Essentially he’s the Wu of this show. Funny but infuriatingly cryptic at times.
Pros:
This show was based off comics so you can go read those. (Kaiko gets an awesome moment in those that I really wish they would have kept in the tv show.)
Vaguely based off the Incredibles.
Non-absent parents who are top notch and actually parent their kids fairly.
Submarines and marine life are always a plus in my book.
Family dynamics are on point. Seriously, this is top notch stuff right here. Also, sibling dynamics are so sweet.
Representation of a good solid marriage. Bonus points because it’s interracial, making their kids mixed. All-round good representation.
Good musical score. (Not as good as Ninjago’s but still pretty good.)
The whole family is smart and super skilled but it shows that they still make mistakes and are flawed humans just like everyone else. Even the parents aren’t shown to be completely infallible and land in their own sticky situations plenty of times and I find that super neat and good of the writers to do.
Great mind-boggling adventures.
The villains are wacky yet endearing sometimes.
There’s villain that is reminiscent of Morro. He’s even got the same voice actor and goes through the same arc of being all jealous of the chosen one.
”Have faith in the fish.” Jeffrey is great animal companion. Who knew you could actually make a fish work as a good character.
Just huge bonus overall with this show because of the solid family representation we’ve got going on here.
Basically, to sum everything up, GO WATCH THESE SHOWS! And let me know if you enjoy them, I would love to hear your thoughts on them.

Unpopular AOT Opinions
Not that I have ever held much in common with the rest of the AOT fandom, especially as someone who has called themselves an Ex-Fan for the last five years.........Nevertheless, a few thoughts that sure to leave the typical AOT fanatic a bit salty.
* Eren Yeager is actually one of the worst anime protagonists. Even back when I was on his side, I never found him to be an especially phenomenal character. There was a time I liked Eren Yeager, but I was never ever enamored by him. And you know a character is bad when he has his foolish fans insisting that he was completely in the right to wage genocide on the earth and should have finished the job.
* Likewise, Mikasa is still one of the worst anime female protagonists. While not an outright awful character, she is far too one-dimensional due to her singleminded fixation on Eren. Even after he goes off the deep end. I don’t give a damn about her feelings about Eren. And you should not either, Eremika fans.
* Attack on Titan’s worldbuilding is crap. We don’t even know the name of some districts of the Walls yet and there’s much of them still unexplored. We know about the nations of Paradis, Marley, and Hizuru, the last of which NEVER made an onscreen appearance. And we certainly didn’t get enough development of Marley as the main enemy faction, they never felt like a fully fleshed out plot point. They’re one-dimensional. And never grew beyond an explanation for the Titans’ origins. That’s to say nothing of the world beyond Marley, or of other Eldian survivors worldwide. Or the Mid-East Aliiance!
* Erwin should have inherited the Colossal Titan. Armin doesn’t utilize his nearly enough to justify his possession of it. Erwin almost certainly would never have wasted such a powerful advantage.
* Annie was revived too late. Far too last minute for her motivations to feel organic and her arc to feel properly played out. She should have died in Season One and her Titan consumed by one of her captors. Plus her popularity is unwarranted, especially once we learned how unremorseful she is over her crimes.
* I don’t care about Onyankopon. I’m not saying he’s a bad character, he’s not even a character with any characteristics we can really hate. But I can’t be bothered to remember he’s there half the time. Probably because there’s little he can do to balance out the many bad elements of the final arcs. He’s hardly a critical player.
* NicoSasha is one of the WORST pairings ever conceived, mostly because they got zero onscreen time together aside from a single flashback. See this is the stuff you idiots need to consider before you kill off one half of a pairing you want to push as a relevant plot point.
* The Uprising Arc is largely irrelevant. I can’t be bothered to even look at that part of the story with more than passing acknowledgement. Why do you people get your rocks off at the sight of Kenny Ackerman, anyway? Is he somebody I was supposed to care about either?
* The Warhammer Titan, as I touched upon in an older post, is a total waste of time. If you’re gonna round out the Nine Titans, you can’t afford for any one of them to be a footnote in the story. And that’s all it and its wielder Lara Tybur are; a footnote in the story. Does it honestly even need to exist in the narrative? Kind of makes me wonder why Liberio was even a part of the story. Could’ve saved us a TON of grief on that one.
* I hate Mikasa’s S4 redesign. She looks far too masculine and not in a good way. I have no problem with such things, but in her case she just does not look good. And Sasha’s S4 look is one that sits poorly too with me now. Probably because of its obvious association with the miserable events of that season.
* Falco..........More on him later.
* Ymir Fritz is one of the LEAST engaging plot points of the series and I think a shoddy explanation for the Titans’ origins. It’s already a needlessly complicated story as it is, but I feel nothing for this walking little spoiler. And don’t get me started on this idiotic revelations in the finale.
* Lindsay Seidel’s performance as Gabi is every bit as abysmal as the character she agreed to play. And I never want to hear her voice in anything to follow her work on Titan ever again.
* And that goes equal ways to Bryce Papenbrook and his overrated ass.
* They did Hange Zoe dirty in Season Four. I am PISSED they framed her as such an inept commander as they did. It definitely hurt my otherwise warm opinion of her. Fucking disrespectful that they’d waste her like that.
* Fuck this grey morality BS the fans keep pushing. I do NOT appreciate being made to hate Paradis by the end of the series, the faction we were supposed to be rooting for early on. I am REALLY not kosher with this at all. Not having any true heroes to root for by the end destroyed my ability to hold on to even a speck of genuine investment.  * I did NOT approve of Artur Braus and his family forgiving Gabi Braun. You do NOT place the murderer of your child above said child. That wasn’t a show of moral integrity. That was failure to honor the memory of the person who they owed justice to. Treating them in the right for how they handled that situation is not as noble as Isayama frames it as. Anyone want to try to disagree?  * The Thunder Spears are actually pretty pathetic weapons, rarely ever landing an outright kill.  * The Rumbling by SiM? DOGSHIT. I hate it because of the season and opening it’s attached to. You can’t polish a turd with this grunge crap.
* My War is also an extremely forgettable AOT theme.
* Hiroyuki Sawano’s music is the only consistently good element of the series aside from the aforementioned. And it too is poisoned by its association with this. Guilt By Association.
* Jean Kirstein isn’t nearly as interesting as fans have been making him out to be in S4. I dare say I stopped caring if he would die well before that disastrous finale. The same goes for Connie Springer, who had no business surviving this due to having zero plot. Does that count as an unpopular opinion? I know some people tire of Sasha’s potato gag, but Connie’s hardly a funny character on his own.
* Hajime Isayama is DEFINITELY a closeted fascist.
* Studio MAPPA’s animation is hideous compared to WIT’s.
* People like Yelena. I do not. Why does she exist again?  * Eren’s descent into villainy is one of the worst bad calls in anime history, right up there with everything involving Gabi Braun. Both of these characters brought down AOT.
* Gabi Braun’s fanbase represents some of the biggest fucking ASSHOLES I’ve ever put up with. If you’re a fan of this character, fucking get help, because I’m not listening to your pathetic attempts to defend something so unnecessary as if she’s the second coming of Christ. The fanaticism from her end is incomprehensible.
* Pieck Finger is a wholly unnecessary character. She’s not even that cute. She’s just there. No plot, no point.  * Ymir’s reasons for leaving Historia and getting eaten for her troubles? Total horseshit. Like this was an egregious waste of someone set up to be a much bigger presence in the story. This was when the fanbase should’ve deserted the entire thing. Just the first of many abandoned subplots and character arcs. Is that an unpopular stance? I don’t know, but I’m going to count it anyway.
* And finally.........THIS STORY ENDED WITH THE OCEAN.

How did you get into AoT? Did you first get into the anime or the manga? And when did you start watching/reading? Was Levi always your favorite character in AoT?
Hi there,
I started out watching the anime, haha, and then somewhere after I think the first part of the final season ended, I picked up reading the manga to see what happened, because I simply couldn't wait, and then I re-read the manga from beginning to end. I remember always hearing about AoT and it being a hugely popular show, but I skipped over watching it a few times because the concept seemed weird to me at first, lol. Giant, man eating monsters and our hero's having to fight against them. It seemed silly on it's face.
But once I started actually watching it, I became pretty much immediately hooked. It's one of those stories where the summary doesn't do it any kind of justice. You have to actually watch it.
Anyway, yeah, Levi was my favorite right from the start. I thought it was immediately apparent that he was this incredibly kind and caring man who simply had a gruff personality. It always confuses me when people say the anime makes Levi seem less caring, because I never got that impression. I thought it was always pretty obvious. It especially became clear to me during the Female Titan arc. I remember, during that scene when the one scout leads a pack of titans to them because he couldn't leave the body of his friend behind, when Levi starts walking toward him, I thought he was going to chew that soldier out for endangering all of their lives. I remember being taken aback, then, when instead he gave that soldier Petra's patch and told him it belonged to his friend. That level of compassion and genuine kindness really shocked me, not because I didn't think Levi was capable of it, but because it really threw into relief the uniqueness of his kindness in such a bleak and harsh world. This same soldier had lambasted Levi earlier, accusing him and Erwin of being heartless and cruel because they said he couldn't go back for his friend's body. But Levi didn't hold that against him at all. He instead did all he could to comfort him. Levi himself lost the bodies of his own squad because of this same soldiers fuck up, having to dump them, including Petra's, to serve as a distraction to save the rest of the scouts, and yet still, Levi had nothing but compassion for that soldier. He wasn't angry at him, or disappointed. He didn't yell at him, or dress him down for endangering all their lives. He instead understood his grief, and that it was his grief that made him act foolishly. And he understood the last thing that solider needed was a harsh word. That he needed kindness. That was extraordinary to me, and made me realize Levi was really the hero of this story. He showed a compassion that I know I myself wouldn't be capable of.

The Real Anime Awards of 2023 part 2
Every year, I become increasingly disappointed in the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, so I started making my own Anime Award lists THAT ARE FOR THE ACTUAL YEAR IN ANIME! IF CRUNCHYROLL WON'T INCLUDE FALL SHOWS THEN I WILL! I've already done my silly version for 2023, so now it's time for my serious picks. But it's still just for fun, so don't take any of my nominees too seriously or get offended that I didn't include your favorites. Even I can't watch everything.
Full disclosure, I don't include all the same categories that Crunchyroll does (just most of them). These are also only for television shows, so I didn't include any movies (and I really don't watch enough anime movies on a yearly basis to include a movie category).

So that's why this is on here instead of another shounen of the week.)

Best OP (yes there are 8 nominations, I couldn't decide 😭)
Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 (“Specialz” King Gnu)- I really think this season’s OPs should be taken as a pair, but when it comes down to which OP will stand the test of time, I think this one will be more iconic.

Uemura, Yuuto As Thorfinn (Vinland Saga season 2)
Takahashi, Rei as Tomo (Tomo-chan is a Girl)
Satao, Gen as Ganta Nakami (Insomniacs After School) His laugh is so pure and genuine, I could listen to it forever!
Inoue, Marina as Armin Arlert (Attack on Titan the final season)
Tanezaki, Atsumi as Anya Forger (Spy Family season 2)
Nakamura, Yuuichi as Satoru Gojo (Jujutsu Kaisen season 2)
So there you have it! My picks for the real anime awards of 2023. Like I said, don't take this seriously at all, it's just something fun I like to put together every year. I always try not to nominate the same things, but it's easy to end up playing favorites. It's so hard to try to include a variety!

reijean v-day 💝⚔️
see vee's prompt graphic for this. i tag anyone in any fandom, i want to hear about your OTP!!
Tumblr media
💝 favorite canon scene:
these panels in the 57th scouting expedition right here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the anime the only internal monologue we get is from jearmin, which is a big rewatch tell of oh shit! why are reiner's thoughts private (armored hehe). but the ONE time, ONE time we get reiner's thoughts in this arc in the manga... it's about jean. and it's not like he takes over narration like armin did when he encounters annie alone, or like jean does once these three meet up. it's just one stray 💭 of "jean really... is different."
sure, other characters note jean's maturity since joining the corps, but recognition from reiner stands out here as a vote of confidence from marcel!reiner, AND four years later: when he still describes jean as "an irresponsible jerk who only ever thought of himself," even though reiner knows first hand that jean grew so, so much after trost. and it's his fault.
💝 a song that reminds you of them:
i previously posted SASAMI's I Was a Window, but another one that screams reijean to me is Till Death by Japanese Breakfast. briefly, it's about marriage, but she wrote a whole book about the context that this song and her relationship come from, which i highly recommend.
so many images in it are so post-rumbling to me: "get these days to go by like the swaying of a ship," (the studio recording starts with ocean sounds); "sing me to sleep, soothe this insomnia"; "your embrace healing my wounds / teach me to breathe, teach me to move." the beginning of verse 2, "steering on hostile waves of panic, like fighting a wheel that pulls to the right" makes me think of a later jbrekkie song, Slide Tackle, which IS reiner.

💝 favorite official picture/graphic:
back to back on the vol. 32 alliance cover baby!!
Tumblr media
💝 favorite fanfic:
i have to say two:
vermin by @oxygenbefore1775: delicious cadet days, delicious fucked up time in reiner POV, delicious, smart tangling with the technological/material/cultural gaps between the walls and the rest of the world. how much of RBA's deep cover is culture shock? the total lack of guile jean has while running roughshod over the land mines in reiner's head with just "bunny." god.
from shiganshina with love by @fromriches-tosin: this is really the one that lured me in. it feels like a locked room, three-hander play, when even being in the wide open air (well, not reiner) is claustrophobic because two characters are intertwined and dug into one another. and as someone who has inhaled shelves' worth of eruri fic and doujinshi, vee's levi is one of my favorites.
💝 favorite fanart:
oh, this and everything by @mikibagels. one thing about reijean that goes so hard is jean's growth spurt, cadet and post-rumbling reijean both have height difference. similar vein, @valmendy illustrating reiner's flirting from never let me go: "i feel like i missed out on my little brother growing up." hello???
💝 why i ship:
i binged the anime so late, just in time for season 4, and when the finale came out i could hardly think of anything other than "we're scouts, we don't know when to quit."
back in my day (i'm turning 27 this month), one dude beating up another in shounen launched a ship, a fleet of ships, and kept it afloat for years, but yams gave us their more obvious, huge interactions in the last... fifteen chapters. but there's so much history between them that screams to be noticed on initial reread and rewatch: the reijearmin (horrendous throuple name) date that was the female titan arc, that jean keeps his cool when the 104th hop on the armored as reibert and ymir try to flee, the whole return to shiganshina, the echo i come back to of "the jean kirchstein i know only thinks of himself."
with jean's OVA, they're the characters whose moms we see the most of besides carla jaeger??? the difference between karina and jean's mother is vast, yet their sons turned out so similar, despite it all. so caring, so haunted by that care. jean takes his leadership in the post-time skip survey corps so seriously, he agonizes over his field leadership in trost, while reiner feels like he killed marcel and bertolt and doomed annie, and in his lowest, lowest moments still manages to protect and worry for falco and gabi.
also, another big why: you people. this is such a cozy pontoon. 😘 happy valentine's day!!!

Attack on Titan
Tumblr media
In her article titled “Growing up in Magical Time: Representations of Female Growth and Development in ABC’s Once Upon a Time'', Katherine Whitehurst emphasizes the use of flashbacks and emphasizes how they allow for the audience to see character change in a nonlinear fashion. Flashbacks are also used to compare and contrast the way the certain character is in the moment. The audience can better see how much a character has progressed by looking at them in the past. This idea is used constantly throughout the show Attack on Titan.  Not only are flashbacks used to unearth important information at the right time, they also are used to show character growth coded by physical appearance and attitude. Whitehurt writes that “In addition to providing a back story and guide to the characters’ development, the flashbacks rationalize characters’ behaviors and relationships in the present.” (7) The characters in Attack on Titan are better fleshed out through flashbacks that provide the audience the ability to see the personal growth a character has undertaken.
How does the series form and content inform the relationship of female physical and emotional growth and development?
Attack on Titan as a series has many important female characters that round out the ensemble and have been praised for their contributions to the story. Isayama has been praised for his depiction of female characters as well rounded and multi-faceted in an anime considered to be shonen/seinen. One of the characters who has very apparent development throughout the story is the character of Hisotria Reiss. First known to the viewer as Christa, Historia is a good example of the journey from timid, obedient girl to one with her own agency and ability to be selfish. In season one, the audience is first introduced to Christa during the training arc in which we are able to learn more about the ensemble cast of characters. She is shown as kind, and selfless, with her personality almost too good to be true. She goes out of her way to help Sasha (one of the cadets) with food and water after her punishment. This moment establishes her type of character to the audience, and for the remainder of season one we only see Krista as a pure character.
Throughout the show, the audience becomes more aware of the way things work in this world. You must be cold and use everything to your advantage in order to survive. Season 2 moves her to a more central role and strengthens her relationship with Ymir.
youtube
The clip shows that Christa is not saving Daz out of the kindness of her heart (the persona that she wants others to see). She wants to die a hero. Ymir knows Christas true identity and makes her promise that once she reveals her true name she will live her own life and not someone else's. After a sacrifice from Ymir, Christa reveals her name is Historia. This is her taking one step into accepting herself and not hiding behind the idea of someone. In season 3, Historia is revealed to be the true queen of the walls and the current king is a fake. With Ymir gone, she is forced to finally accept that she's been putting on a persona. She states that she will now be showing her true stupid self. This change makes her feel more lifelike and relatable and shows that she is no longer hiding. Because of her royal blood, Historia is able to take control of the Founding Titan.
youtube
In what ways does the series use cinematic timing to chronicle character transformations?
The series often uses flashbacks to provide more information or reveal plot twists in a non-traditional way. These flashbacks are usually important background information that fleshes out the characters experience and explains why they are the way they are. Oftentimes, the audience doesn’t know what exactly has happened throughout the story until a few seasons later when there is a big reveal through a memory/flashback. Most of Historia's backstory and growth is shown through flashbacks, sometimes through different characters' perspectives and sometimes her own. This allows the audience to slowly uncover why a character is the way they are. This is true of almost all the other characters in the show. Attack on Titan is full of mystery so the use of flashbacks and memories for continuing and fleshing out the story is particularly helpful.
How are the primary characters' ages and development coded by the characters around them?
Most of the main cast of characters are teenagers and experiencing the horrific events of being a cadet for the first time. The main characters start out as young and inexperienced and the audience watches as their youthful drive and optimism is crushed the first time they actually face the titans. As the story progresses and the characters age and start to grow up, their experience in fighting the Titans contribute and shape their growth. During most of the flashbacks in the series, the character that is the main focus, is often the only one who is young. They (especially Historia) are often surrounded by adult figures which tend to emphasize their youngness and naivety. The time skip towards the end of the series is also a big way that age is shown in the show.
In what ways does the series reflect narratives of youth represent narratives of adult functionality or dysfunctionality?
In the beginning of the show, the main cast of characters are young teenagers and display youthful idealism in the way they try to fight titans. They are not aware of the horrors that wait outside the walls, believing that their training is enough to keep them alive. This idealism is contrasted with the older characters of the series who continuously emphasize the harsh realities of the situation. The world inside of Attack on Titan is full of adults perpetuating a dysfunctional system of living. They've built society up to be full of secrets, corruption and power struggles showing that adult authority figures aren’t portrayed as functional or effective. The idea of youth rebelling against a corrupt and oppressive adult society is used often in Attack on Titan and is a driving force for many important plot points.
How does the series use the fantasy genre as an area for framing virtue and villainy?
Attack on Titan challenges the traditional narratives of good vs evil and blurs the lines between virtue and villainy often. It shows the worst parts of being a human and what war does to a person and their morals. The series is filled with morally ambiguous characters and the characters that we come to see as “heroes” commit morally reprehensible acts for the sake of “the greater good” while the characters are labeled as the villains often have redeeming qualities and justifiable motivations for their actions. The story is interesting to follow as a viewer, because there is a big shift in the side that the characters view as “the right side.” At the beginning of the show there is a clear source of evil and villainy. The titans are portrayed as horrific creatures who don’t have any ability to think and feel. They are driven by the simple thrill of the kill; killing and eating people despite having no need to consume food to live. However as the show continues, more and more is revealed about the titans and the strict line between good and evil begins to be blurred. However, while the titans pose an extreme threat to humanity, the series also highlights the internal conflicts with humanity. The actions portrayed by all sides of humanity and the morally questionable decisions made by the characters show that the conflict is not black and white. Even the humans (who should be considered as virtuous in this context) commit despicable acts in the sake of self-preservation and ideology.
Discussion Questions
In what ways does the fantasy genre allow us to relate to characters in unexpected ways that stories set in real life do not?
Does animation make it easier for characters to be one dimensional or represent a specific trope in television?
How does the form of animation contribute to the fantasy genre? Are some stories better when they are told through animation?
