With that, you finished discussing his schedule as well.

August 15th, 2023 🎀

My university resumes classes tomorrow! I am so excited to really begin and solidify my morning routine and get back into the school mindset and grind. I'm really planning on being successful this semester.

With the new semester starting, I figure it's time to set out some new goals and things I want to accomplish this semester.

Fall Semester Goals 🌸

🩷 Academic Goals -

Pass every class with an A, no exceptions. I took on an easy class load for a reason.

Join 1 or 2 clubs. There's a club related to my major that I'm looking into, as well as a kpop club and a Japanese club that I'm looking into joining if I have the ability to.

Put effort into my classes. Don't miss class without a solid, valid excuse. Actually study and review class material outside of lectures. Ask questions in class and don't be afraid to go to office hours or tutoring.

🩷 Personal Goals

Stick to a consistent morning routine! Workout, journal, read, make my bed, skincare, etc. Consistency builds confidence.

Pamper myself regularly. For me, this means the occasional retail therapy moment and getting my nails done every 4 to 6 weeks. I don't normally get my nails due to the nature of my job, but if I keep my nails short and not too flashy, it'll be great! My first appointment is at the end of this week, and I'm excited! The picture of nails I included is actually how I'm getting mine done!!

Routinely attend appointments. That includes lab work, therapy, psych, dental, and general physician appointments. My health is a priority, and I want to make sure I stay on top of it this semester.

🩷 Social Goals

Attend study group sessions when applicable

Again, join a club or two. It's the best way to make friends with similar interests.

Attend social networking events on my campus. They have career fairs and professional fairs all the time. As a junior in university, I think it's time I start building some connections for future internship and career opportunities.

I also have some physical goals, but I will not be including those here as to not accidentally trigger anyone. I don't have particular deadlines for any of the goals I mentioned, but I feel like it's important to have these goals so I know the direction I want my semester to go in.

I'm really excited for this semester. It's time I put my best foot forward and succeed. I know I can do this. My GPA will increase, I will recieve more scholarships, and I will pass everything with high marks. I believe in myself.

Reviewing Every UKISS Release: By Unpopular Demand ~ New Generation

Oh the great psychic damage I've inflicted on myself to do this. I was so excited, thinking about how this would let me gush about Bran New Kiss or Inside of Me, but unfortunately, I must start at the dreaded beginning: New Generation.

I will admit that this wasn't as bad as I expected. There was a lot of cringing, a lot of "oh baby what are you doing?" being whispered, but not the total trainwreck I had built up in my head. To be totally honest, I think that these two songs could've been pretty decent with better packaging and fully embracing the campiness, but I digress.

Just for funsies, I've also noted the YouTube and Spotify streams (if applicable) from the day I did the review. Dunno what to make of it yet, but I'm sure it'll be interesting.

(Also I like how I slowly become more and more unhinged as I type this review out.)

New Generation - 1st Mini Album | 2008.09.03

So I was already listening to Kpop around this time, but like most people, paid like zero attention to this because I liked the bigger and more popular and better packaged boy groups at the time. I was also just developing my logical reasoning when this came out, so I don't really remember much about this. No idea what the general feel/reception for this was, and I think the first time I listened to this was probably late 2009 after ManManHaNi, and somehow I remember really liking this at the time.

Obviously, time soured my opinion of this mini album, but now as an adult with a mostly functioning prefrontal cortex, I can say I don't really hate it? I hate the packaging of this mini album, but it's oddly endearing in how poorly it's aged.

Another thing I noticed while going back over this is how hard Soohyun, Kevin, and even Kibum carry in these first two releases. I'm not knocking on the others, and it makes sense since Soohyun had been a trainee the longest under some bigger companies, while Kevin and Kibum had both already debuted. They just seem a lot more polished in all aspects, and a lot more committed to the cheesiness. I'm probably not gonna rank them for later releases, but for this one, I think I'd put them as Kevin > Soohyun >> Kibum >>> Dongho > Eli/Xander.

While I don't have my personal rankings of them from that time (based solely off of how much I liked them, irrespective of ability, commitment, etc), I think based off of how I viewed them in 2009, it would be probably Dongho > Kibum > Xander/Kevin > Soohyun/Eli. Yeah, I was a delusional kid who had a crush on Dongho since he was closest in age to me, Kibum and Kevin were both flower boys and good dancers, while Xander was a fellow Canto speaker with an accent I could understand, plus he was funny. Soohyun and Eli were really victims of poor styling at the time, but who wasn't?

The Kibum-Kevin-Soohyun verse is kinda interesting, and by interesting, I mean it feels like they did Kibum dirty by drawing that comparison, but like also there's no other way to structure it since he is their next best vocalist

Soohyun, bless his heart, is kind of both actively ruining and saving this song

Like he's hard carrying too, and that "You gonna be my lady, yoohoo~" actually goes so hard, but his voice just sounds...way too mature for this

Which makes me wonder if this was a directional problem, or if he just wasn't able to do it at this time because he nails this concept 7 years later for Action (spoiler I guess)

Really love that first prechorus, I don't know what it is, but that Kibum-Soohyun-Kevin buildup really works well

Lyrically, I think the YT comments actually sum it up for me - "We're the new kids on this block" vs. "Stop treating us like kids" - which is it make up your minds

Also shoutout for being their first and only noona-chasing song they really never revisited this concept ever again

Really funny that Dongho is the only one at the right age to make this concept work (and maybe Eli and Kevin too, possibly Kibum if we're being generous) but he gets like 3 lines

I also found a super old live radio version of this song from their promotional period, and yes it's in the crunchiest potato quality imaginable, but it was insightful

Soohyun and Kevin sound great as always, Kibum's voice actually felt much stronger than in the actual song or in music shows, and the rap line was there

Hard carried by Soohyun and Kevin, Kibum did his job, Dongho was there, and RIP to Eli and Xander for that awful last verse (80% not their fault)

Kevin's hair and outfit are peak 'flower-boy-wannabe-bad-boy' like we all thought that hair was soooo hot, and you were either drowning in your own clothes or cutting off your circulation with no middle ground, and this was a cross-cultural phenomenon

Honestly, I feel like you could just go to a local school and see a bunch of boys dressed like this

Xander's Ronald McDonald hair I'm so sorry you had to go through that

The High School Musical-esque dance scenes have me in tears like those basketball jerseys are so goofy and Kevin's legs are lost in the fabric

This is honestly so confusing I don't get it, but I guess I'm not galaxy-brained enough. Like did they not have enough footage or something? Is there a scene change quota they had to meet or what?

I love that every single part of this MV can be carbon dated, and not one bit aged well, and I just think that's so iconic

So I've come up with two different ratings for this MV

12/10 if you take this completely unseriously like this is so funny, so poorly aged, so cringe, it's amazing. Even while cringing, I still had fun

3.5/10 if you take this seriously, like wtf was NH thinking (spoiler, they were not)? Like even when I first watched this as a kid (and within their target age demographic!!! I, a young elementary school girl who was entrenched in East Asian media and came from a similar cultural background!!!!) it was pretty cringe. I'm giving it pity points because Soohyun was so committed to this and the funny Kiseop cameo.

Honestly, I feel like you could just go to a local school and see a bunch of boys dressed like thispoorly aged, so cringe, it's amazing. Even while cringing, I still had fun

Again, I never watched these when they first came out, and I also don't think I watched any of these very much prior to doing this

Not gonna talk about their actual debut stage because that's like 8 pixels total

Also not doing all of their stages, just Music Core because it's actually in really good quality

Look at those fits that was peak fashion in 2008

Dongho's silly little cardigan and bowtie, Kevin's goofy polka dot sweater vest, Soohyun with the plaid vest and random sweatband, Kibum with a random tie, Eli wearing a hoodie I swear every boy had it's a real time capsule

Yeah, I'm grabbing screencaps on mute I'm not subjecting myself to this psychic damage

The multiple bracelets is so real that was such look back then

I remember I used to collect those cheap rubber bracelets to try to recreate that look

This is such an unserious part of the choreo but I will admit it's very cute in a stupid way

Also, all I can think of is the other members talking about how they think his hands are freakish and alien-like, and I think that's just foul of them, but also not undeserved considering how snarky Kevin was in those early days

Oh Soohyun, I'm so sorry they did you dirty like this

Like it's incredible how he de-ages himself a few years later when he gets decent hair and styling

And he was so committed to this like he's literally beaming while everyone else is just smiling

He also winked right before this Soohyun is the cutest I swear

Eli's comically large chain

The dance is cute, but also insanely cringy because they're kind of taking it too seriously and not as full-on campy cheese

Like I said before, Soohyun, Kevin, and Kibum really stand out here as being much more polished and cleaner in their dancing, are clearly committed to the character, and have a good eye for the camera

Dongho is also a standout because wow I forgot he had that je ne sais quoi stage presence

There's a lot of moments where the dancing doesn't quite sync up, and I think it's fairly obvious that they're still very new as a group

They have backup dancers, though not in this particular stage, but I think they had them for their actual debut stage and Music Bank

So I lied, let's check out the Music Bank stage

This actually is from before the Music Core stage (MuCore is listed as 2008.09.27, while the MuBank is supposedly from 2008.09.12)

I didn;t mention this before, but I'm fairly certain the MuCore stage is lipsynced, but the MuBank stage is definitely live

Terrible quality pic, but these were some other peak 2008 fits

I knew so many guys who had Kevin's hoodie

And not Soohyun's trash bag jacket

Soohyun and Kevin are already very good and stable at singing live and making it seem easy, while Kibum definitely struggles a bit

Honestly, I wonder if NH invested in more singing lessons for him, if Kibum could've ended up where Kiseop is now - a solid subvocalist who can also hold his own and step up to being a vocalist

I just watched this dude pull his shirt up over his head for this and no, I don't understand this part of the choreo

I don't really know much about rapping and don't have many particular thoughts on it, but Xander and Eli can be heard clearly, so that's a good thing, right?

Honestly, just ranking both of these stages as 4.5/10

MuCore stage was in better camera quality, sharper and more coordinated group dancing, but probably lipsynced and no funny backup dancers

MuBank is like 360p max and kind of a mess, but I always love hearing Soohyun and Kevin singing live, and there are funny backup dancers

So if Not Young is borderline age inappropriate for being too immature, Give It To Me swings wildly in the opposite direction and teeters into being too mature

Xander, Soohyun, and arguably Kibum are old enough for this song, while Dongho is way too young, and Eli and Kevin are either barely old enough or still young (my personal opinion, based off of some of the lyrics, but the stage of this song is actually fine)

Honestly should've been the title track, they 100% would have had a fighting chance at debut and be remembered as either 'cool new rookie group' or 'wildly inappropriate rookie group', but both are better than 'cringe rookie group'

This is like a proto-Quintessential UKISS™ song - dance beat, Soohyun doing adlibs like rent's due, Eli dropping horrifically funny one liners, and the singing dominating the rapping in all aspects

Now if only this song was a "baby I love you even though you cheated on me pls come back" song

Hard carried by Soohyun and Kevin, who are both surprisingly singing lower than what they usually do, and also do not have a shouting match at any of the song (!!!)

Does that count as early installment weirdness?

Special shoutout to Kibum who actually sounds really good for his two lines. Dunno if his voice just suits this kind of song, or if this is just a more comfortable range for him, but he sounds much better here

It's hard to tell if this is sung live or not, but what I do know is Soohyun is making his singing expressions, so I think it's live, with slightly off audio? It's hard to tell honestly, maybe the mics were bad?

Why was this not their actual debut? This is literally what was considered so 2008 cool, the outfits were peak bad boy fashion, and the choreo is very much a product of its time (not derogatory)

Also got a good chuckle with Soohyun being the centre for the dance break while flanked by Kevin and Kibum, it's what he deserves

7.75/10 much better than Not Young in terms of dancing and coordination (makes sense, this is dated 2008.11.06), the outfits are 2008 stylish, and they all seem so much more comfortable with this?

That concludes this review of New Generation. You know, there were a lot of emotions going through this, a lot of "why does NH not think?" and "oh my god sweetie, I'm so sorry they did this to you", and "what were we all smoking back in 2008 to consider this cool?", but I think I had fun while doing this.

I have most of the notes for Bring It Back2 Old School written out, so now it's just a matter of editing and collecting screenshots, which honestly pains me to think about. If New Generation was a dark time in UKISS history, Bring It Back2 Old School is purgatory.

So fun bonus fun fact, if you've made it to the end:

I don't know how many people know this since I also found this out not too long ago while digging around, but XING, the old group that Kevin and Kibum were a part of was an absolute disaster in like every possible way. I got some of this info in English, and the rest in a bad KR-EN translation (so possibly inaccurate), but apparently the XING CEO was actually a former SM CEO who worked there around 2000-2003ish before getting ousted by the board of directors, and was responsible in part for the famous slave contracts.

So out of spite, said CEO took a bunch of SM-affiliated trainees (from my understanding, they were sort of on a shortlist to get into SM) and founded his own company to compete with SM with these new trainees and his new boy group. XING was an absolute disaster for only being around for 4 years with 5 different lineups and 18 total members having been involved. Kevin and Kibum were part of the original lineup, but Kibum bailed after a few months with the excuse of 'focusing on his education', while Kevin stayed long enough to go from maknae to leader, before dipping after the third lineup (also, according to the article I read, he was the CEO's favourite because he thought he had star potential lol). A bunch of the guys who left sued the company around 2008-2009, and got their contracts terminated.

It's hard to understand what the contracts said exactly because of the shitty translation, but it was something like exclusive 10 year contract that will be extended if a member takes personal breaks, goes to school, enlists in military, and/or goes on health leave and profits would only be paid out in fixed amounts after selling 500k (or 250k I can't remember but it was some crazy amount) units (unclear if this means total albums, or just for one release).

Apparently in 2010ish, the CEO was talking about having a 'XING family reunion concert' and asked all the guys about it and got left on read, so then he finally let the name die and moved on to terrorizing more boys (no for real, he allegedly threw a bottle of alcohol at one of the XING guys when he told him about wanting to leave).

dumping a lot of annoying thoughts abt hui and ptg right now

it seems like the only thing i can predict correctly are music show wins, which, to be fair is just math and rigging patterns, but im going to do some serious handwaving and guesswork again becausei cant let things go so

according to shinwon, everyone’s decisions right now, “hoetaek hyung too and jinho hyung too” were made because they love pentagon so much. (from about 1:09 in this video translation by twitter user taeksite covers most of what this guess is based on. this is also related to the jinhui instagram thing btw). nothing about individual desires or wants for oneself (which would be fine, mind you), unlike yujin from clc who said gp999 was her last shot at performing on stage because clc had been formally dismissed, since people keep saying the situations are equivalent. not to mention the fact that hui spent his entire enlistment period accompanying pentagon to various schedules and practice, and constantly wrote about wanting to meet universe again. (and i really don’t believe this to just be “”fanservice””, or whatever, if outsiders want to interpret it as that. there was no need for him or pressure on him to accompany the members everywhere and write letters like that.)

hui’s competition profile states pentagon’s “just do it yo!!” is his favorite song; the song he and shinwon wrote together which is titled after shinwon’s/pentagon’s catchphrase, about their many struggles predebut and still then in 2018 when it was released (english translation). (as non-universe discovered two days ago, it was the first pentagon bside to be streamed to #1 on bugs for pentagon’s fifth anniversary celebration project). further implying that this is something done for the group. his purpose on the show being “rather than rank, it’s about proving” also implies that the main purpose of this might not be redebuting, but once again proving to cube (🙄) they’re worth giving the bare minimum support. that said, i definitely think supporting hui as much on the show as possible is the right idea, since we have no idea at what point they’ll have considered him to have “proven” himself. unless people are told to not vote for him, at this rate he could be #1 in the debut team...(and is that something we’re supposed to try to achieve or not?)

pentagon were initially supposed to have a comeback instead of this. in august, kino and jinho apparently stated that the comeback period had been decided. in september-october, there were many pictures and stories of members recording or being in the studio. there were even press articles (based on information given by companies) that pentagon would be coming back in the second half of 2022. i believe (once again just guessing) that changgu’s ‘pop rocks’ asmr video and kino’s appearance as ‘heavy metal’ on masked singer were both pre-comeback promotion and concept spoilers. (..two very different genres, but, in kpop theyd both just be considered ‘rock’ anyway). in october it went as far as another idol, kwon eunbi, wishing pentagon luck on their upcoming album. at the end of hui’s post-enlistment vlive, he tells us to look forward to pentagon’s comeback. (currenly unable to find a video or link of this as the keywords are so common)

i’ve previously stated that the timeline is very confusing. the boys planet 999 application period ended in august, and the final lineup was decided “mid-november”. hui’s military discharge was november 18th. it appears that he was specifically added without auditioning, within days after returning from the military, which, obviously, makes me wonder why. here’s where the serious guessing that could be very wrong comes in. i’ve already presented that his purpose is “rather than rank, it’s about proof”, and that when shinwon discussed the recent events, he did not once use phrases like “hui wanted” or “the members wanted” in relation to any of this. it’s about “choosing, for the sake of pentagon”; possibly that cube has specifically demanded this. cube has a track record of always doing mnet’s bidding, sending contestants to almost every season of their survival shows, and doing nothing about chowon getting rigged out of izone, for example. btob were invited to kingdom and seem to have not been 100% sure about participating (?). monsta x declined their invitation to join, and after that, starship entertainment artists were no longer allowed to promote on mcountdown or similar mnet activities for a year, and it’s suspected these things are related. so, my guess is, mnet were aware gp999 underperformed and kepler aren’t getting the massive results produce groups got; the novelty of the revamped show and the lower public interest in boy groups won’t help them get numbers, and yujin’s arc last year did pull in a lot of viewers, so they tried to create a scenario that’s even more extreme. cube always does what they’re asked of mnet anyway, and it’s not like they put any effort into pentagon, as they’re always holding back their music and keeping their releases sparse when they have thousands of unreleased songs ready to go. (not an exaggerated figure. kino recently said he has 300 unreleased songs and he’s just one member.)

based on shinwon’s words (and how people describe hui’s audition videos. both fans and non-fans. i personally haven’t felt able to watch and analyze yet.) it does not seem like it’s something hui as an individual really wanted to do, and more like something he was talked into doing. he seems to have no interest in leaving the group currently, nor does it seem to be happening, as he’s still in their seasons greetings, performs with them on awards shows and festivals (during the boys planet 999 training camp...lol) and on the 28th he released a demo together with wooseok calling himself captain of five senses, captain being what pentagon members occasionally call him instead of leader and five senses beiong their second mini album. he appears in the new years’ greetings they just released, saying the time spent together with universe in 2022 was too short, and he hopes there will be more of it in 2023. i’m still wondering how hard cube pushed this and if mnet specifically asked for hui (why though) or any pentagon member would’ve done and hui said he’d do it. i’m also entertaining the possibility that he chose to be the one participating because, regardless of whether 100k+ sales per album, #1 on digital (gaon/circle/bugs/genie/itunes) and physical (gaon/circle/oricon), sold out concerts and merch, famous songs are considered “enough” in today’s kpop industry hui is the most famous and recognized out of them, and him in there makes it look completely absurd.

(absolutely just opinions in this paragraph)

i still think this treatment is absolutely disgusting. if cube is so done with them, why can’t they just let them sit out their contracts instead of humiliating them like this when they don’t appear to want it? but then, i guess idle would lose their mama privileges they don’t even want next year, so it’s not worth the risk to them xx or they want to keep hui longer while the rest make it out somehow... i assume theyve been told theyll be given a comeback if hui proves whatever cube wnats proof of.

there’s more to be said about all of this, and, as you may be able to tell, i’m spiralling a litle. it’s mostly speculation. feel free to tell me what you think is going on!

Synopsis: Uh basically it’s the written version of a crazy dream series I had a while ago. I’m tired of not updating here but I also don’t have any requests so here we are 😀

"Hi are you interested in Korean culture and Kpop? Do you want to get to know the Idols you've come to love? This is the place for you! Fill out the application and see if you're qualified for what it takes to be an Idol!"

I quickly pull up the online application and fill it out. I have been into Korean culture for 8 years (it’s been over a decade now currently 😀) and it's time my knowledge be put to the test. I answer all of the requirements and send my application in hoping I'll get a response.

"Girrrrrrrrrrrlllllll, I'm LIVING!! This is our chance to meet our ultimate biases and if we're fortunate....marry them!" My best friends are on a Group FaceTime call screaming. "They specifically said they don't want Koreaboos and fangirling on campus. We'll have to work on it."

"Don't our acceptance letters come today if we get in? We already did our interviews so hopefully we all get in. I personally can't wait to see Mark."

The rest of us look at her. "We know Kayla, we know." The doorbell rings and I tell them to hold on. A Korean man was standing at the door with an envelope.

"Hello Ms.Diamond, you're formally invited to attend Idol High, your flight leaves in the morning. Your ticket is inside along with the itinerary for your first day and check in for your dorm room. 안녕히 가세요!"

My friends and I arrive at the airport along with our luggage. "So do we order an Uber or...do they provide us transportation? Wait...I see a sign that says Idol High." We head towards the man holding the sign and he looks really familiar. "You girls attending Idol High?"

"MINHO?! I mean um yes we're attending Idol High. Ahaha..." He smiles and gestures for us to follow him. "Girrrrrllll we hit the jackpot!" "I know we are finally living like a kdrama!" "I wonder how the dorms work!"

"Ladies are you coming?" We stop whispering among ourselves and run after him.

We arrive on campus and it looks like we stepped into what looks like Boys Over Flowers and My Hero Academia had a baby. "Wowww we're going to live here?!" Minho chuckles a bit at our reactions. "Well yes of course. Your luggage will be taken to your room while you attend orientation. Well it was nice meeting you ladies, enjoy your time here."

We exit the limo and step foot on campus for the first time. As we enter the Admin office we are ushered to the orientation center and sat at a computer desk. "Welcome to Idol High, please insert your full legal name into the appropriate section."

"Welcome Mina to Idol High, you will now take a quiz to decide who your roommates will be. The dorms are co-Ed."

"Your results are in. You are best matched with BamBam of Got7 and YangYang of WayV. You can not be matched with your biases. Please head to your dorm to continue orientation."

Of course I wouldn't be paired with my biases...I knew it. I check to see that my friends are finished with their quizzes. "So who did you get?"

"Yugyeom and Hendery."

"Hwasa and Yuta"

"Wooyoung and Zuho"

"Wooseok and Shownu."

"Oh cool. Well I'm going to head to my dorm, I'll catch you later." I walk to my dorm and bump into someone. "Oh excuse me beautiful, are you okay?" I look up to see the man of my dreams( 🥴) Jackson Wang. "...um oh uh no but I'll be okay later...." He smiles and presses the elevator button. "Sooo do you like Got7?" The doors open and we walk inside. "Absolutely, that's my...favorite group...floor 7 please."

"Oh me too, what room are you in?" I look at my sheet and back at him. "4..." I'm so nervous I hope I'm not sweating. "I'm in 5, that's across the hall. I guess I'll be seeing you around. Can I see your schedule?" I pass him my paper and our hands touch slightly and I feel my stomach fill up with butterflies. Oh good god.

"We have the same morning classes, maybe we can walk to class together." He smiles as he hands me my paper back. "Oh okayyyyy, I wouldn't be opposed to that idea." The doors open and we step out together. "Oh I think our rooms are this way." I follow him and we find our dorms. "Well I'll let you get settled, maybe later we can go to the café together?" "Oh sure that sounds good. Just knock on my door ..."

I open my door and wave to him before closing it. If I stayed in his presence any longer I think I would've burst. "How am I going to control myself around him?" "Around who?" I jump because I know that voice all too well, BamBam.

"No one...hi I'm Mina." He shrugs and waves. "You already know who I am, Double B!" YangYang pops out his room and smiles. "Hi Mina, it's nice to meet you!"

"Awww you're so cute in person, it's nice to meet you too!" He blushes a bit as he smiles. "Well go settle in, we'll hang out later." I smile as I open the door labeled Mina and close it. I let out a breath of relief and see that my bags have been placed at the foot of the bed. I think I'll have a lot to get used to but I think I'm gonna like it here.

I believe doing it this way provides a better context and contrast.

Also, my observations won't really take their other content into account that was happening around the same time. I might say something that contradicts a Bangtan Bomb that was released roughly around the same time, for instance, so just be advised. Anyone is more than welcome to chime in with interesting tidbits from other content (if it's relevant).

If the episodes are short enough, or I don't feel like there's much going on, I'm going to fit several in a post.

Episode 4

Practical Joker Jimin strikes! You can already tell he's so charismatic in front of the camera.

Yet another episode where we can witness the group dynamics, which is entertaining to watch. There's a shamelessness among them to sabotage or push one another under the bus, and it's almost like watching a bunch of rowdy brothers having fun. Again, it's one of the likable things about them.

Episode 5

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but I am in awe of how their personalities mesh well with one another. Obviously, the differences in their personalities are expected to make an appearance in high-tension scenarios and occur off-camera, but the relative ease they have in one another's company and how organic it is, is almost unparalleled. Admittedly, this is more than likely a bias at play. There was a 2nd generation Kpop group whose relationship almost reminds me of theirs, and that was DBSK as I knew them. I saw them on a lot of Japanese variety shows, and in hindsight, their chemistry was unusually soft and sweet at the height of their popularity.

One of the best things about this episode is how well they support each other's strengths and will take a step back from their initial roles if required. This is hardly surprising when considering their professional work ethic even to this day, but it's always nice seeing it play out in situations outside of their work.

I still can't get over how much of a Leading Man energy Jin possesses.

I also want to point out that Yoongi is consistently unlike the grumpy character that he's often associated with. I understand where it originates because he doesn't sugarcoat anything, he's straightforward, and his deadpan tone is almost like the cherry on top of his Grumpy Cat appeal. He's an interesting character study in this way because he's otherwise very colorful.

And Slytherin Jimin makes his first appearance: “It's not my life.”

I think this applies to all the members, but so far, Jimin is so unintentionally funny.

Episode 6

This is going to be a common theme, but I am so livid with myself that I wasn't automatically OT7 from the get-go. I can confidently say I am now, of course, but the reality was that it took a while for me to like each member individually. Taehyung was the last member for me, and I don't understand why because his personality is so easily on display in this episode (

show that cemented my love for them). And the dynamic between Taehyung and Jimin is so transparently adorable with the level of comfort they have to playfully rib each other. The

“이 자식아”

has me in tears because I love when people are playing a role and cheekily slip out of character. This is Vmin in their element, and I love it.

Finally, a real exchange between Jungkook and Jimin.

I still wouldn't have shipped them had I been around at this time, but watching this scene alone, I can see why people would have started to. Right off the bat, Jimin is complimentary, really laying it on thick. Even if it's for play, it's glaringly obvious that Jimin is essentially playing favorites or is at least showing an affinity for Jungkook. I think what makes this striking for a lot of people is that he doesn't do this for anyone else (granted, he's absolving sins of only three members lmao), but at the same time it's a bit hard to make any sort of firm declarations without seeing the other members in Jimin's role and how they might improvise if Jungkook was sitting in front of them. Although I'm sure anyone could argue that watching them in Bangtan Bombs around this time, Jimin leaned into this more than the other members.

I guess one could argue that Jimin is very doting because Jungkook's the youngest, but he's also not that much younger, and they're both not that young here. It's not like they're 15 and 13, where that hyung-dongsaeng relationship might be markedly more different than at 20 and 18. Because they're older, there's that nuance that can influence how a dynamic is perceived, and it doesn't help that Jungkook doesn't affect a traditional maknae vibe (and, as we all know by now, has a predisposition towards enjoying playing into a hyung-like role).

It's well-known that all the members love Jungkook, but Jimin consistently shows it differently. Even when they're supposed to be "in character," Jimin veers off-topic to alter the focus on Jungkook. It's... interesting.

I'm not saying this is specifically the case for him because I don't know him personally (the usual disclaimers apply, etc.), but some people will manifest their feelings quite differently when they don't fully recognize it. With regards to Jikook, and if I wanted to be overanalytical about it, I would question the authenticity of Jimin's hyung role because his behavior calls it into question. There are always exceptions, and Jimin may have just been expressing intense adoration for Jungkook in the same way anyone can aggressively love people they know are cute but don't like past a certain threshold. Certainly possible, but not something I would immediately conclude going off of first impressions.

Side note: A lot of early signs that denote attraction and/or chemistry begins subconsciously, and what happens a lot of the time is that other people will recognize those signs before the people involved. We don't receive a visual feed as comprehensive as others who can see us do. None of this has to indicate anything romantic, by the way, but there's a reason why (in general) other people might sense something about your relationship with someone before you can.

I love that Hoseok is right after Jungkook because you see the hyung-dongsaeng dynamic flipped upright and how Jihope contrasts with Jikook. Hoseok's drama when he's talking Jimin up lends itself to playfulness, which is where their main dynamic is present and why that feeling is much more different than when Jimin was singing Jungkook's praises.

In all fairness, however, if this was the advent of Jihope, I'm not surprised.

Attractions?

As a teen I assumed I had crushes. There were definitely guys that I thought looked good and were nice, this was in the early friendship stage. I found once they had become a friend and I knew them well, those initial "crush" feelings disappeared. Once I learned more terminology in later years I just assumed they were "squishes".

Romantic attraction took me a while to figure out, especially because these initial feelings disappeared when people became solid friends. I read something along the lines of "If you're wondering what romantic attraction feel like, that's your answer", so at the end of the day I chalked myself up to being "Aromantic".

Haven't found that to have changed so I think it's still applicable. If anything I resonate with it more now. I'm more drained than I used to be so any sort of "squish" is few and far between lol.

I think it's easy to be confused for a long time when you love the romantic comedy genre. I will RELISH in romcom fiction. Spent a decade immersed in shojo anime and manga, kdramas, jdramas, tv/movies/books. I still consume all this. It's exciting, makes me happy, I get so absorbed in their worlds, I will fantasise being in it. But with people in reality, those romantic feelings are just not there.

My eyes really opened a couple of years ago when I discovered the Lesbian MasterDoc and learnt about Compulsory Heterosexuality. Quite a significant portion of that read really resonated with me. I don't think I have any Lesbian-leaning feelings, but I realised very quickly how legitimate compulsory heterosexuality was.

This lead to a new set of hurdles though. Had I had all these squishes on guys(at the time, but their genders aren't all cis men now) because that's what I was "attracted" to? Or was that compulsory heterosexuality?

The first good half of my kpop journey was definitely focused on boy groups. I did listen to girl groups too, but the ratio definitely favoured the guys. I also had a guaranteed bias in the male groups I listened to, whilst I didn't give that same energy to girls. This also applied to outside of Kpop. I definitely had favourite band members or actors and they were guys. At some point close to, but before discovering CompHet, I started liking girl groups more. I didn't necessarily have more biases, but my eyes were far more drawn to the girl groups visuals than the guy groups. At the time I thought that was purely aesthetic and was being influenced by being so immersed in Kpop where fashion is a big component of it.

Through more learning I realised I could feel aesthetic attraction VERY strongly. Sometimes I thought this meant I liked the person more than a friend, or that it meant I might be bi-romantic or homo-romantic. Sometimes I'm still not sure, especially now that in the last year or two I really gravitate towards women more. But any feelings still don't really exist beyond becoming friends. Then I'm also aware that I feel more comfortable doing any sort of physical exploring with a woman than a man, but then there's still something about a man(but maybe that's the CompHet speaking and anyone masc-presenting could be appealing lol).

At the same time as the aesthetic attraction to women grew, the general disdain for men also grew. It's definitely not all men. The men I know are good, but any sour encounter I've ever had and any time I've felt an uncertain/vigilant/unsafe energy from a stranger, it has been cause of a man. So has that unsafe feeling redirected me towards women?

Once I really looked into aesthetic attraction it made me look back on people while growing up. Were those characters in the tv show I liked my favourite JUST because I thought they were cool? Or was this the early version of feeling attraction as an ace kid. Was I just mesmerised because I liked the characters or were they the ace kid aesthetic attraction version of "An awakening" haha.

Currently I'm sitting with "Aromantic with strong aesthetic attraction". It's just that sometimes it's really strong, to the point where I wonder if it's an actual relationship-type attraction. Is this person just amazing to look at or would I be open to physically exploring if they asked me?

Another thing is that all the grief I've gone through over the years has left me...feeling like the outer husk of a human. I do feel lonely but it's not an intimacy lonely. It's a loneliness for losing the past where things were easier and where I was happy and hopeful and less stressed and unbothered by most things.

Sometimes I want "a person", sometimes I'm curious and wonder what physical interactions I'd be okay with if I trusted and felt safe with the person.

Keeping in mind I hate being touched. But sometimes I don't mind reciprocating a hello/goodbye hug, but then sometimes I don't want a person touching me at all(whether there's a reason for that particular person or not), but then there are people where I don't mind touch. Like if our hands brush when walking, or our shoulders touch when we both look at a phone etc. Casual touches like that are sometimes okay. Sometimes once I'm touched, even accidentally, I need that person to move away and stay in my line of sight until my flinching at movement settles down.

hi, honey bee! 💕 thank you so much for bringing this to my attention. I had reached out to jenovious (formerly jensrose) via dms to sort this out originally. I want to apologize beforehand that she asked that I don’t post the ask and before I could even respond, she deactivated. But I think it’s important for other writers to be aware, so that they can also protect their own works.

I would like to preface that should she create a new blog, do not send hate. This is never okay, and we should all know better than to do something that despicable.

I am posting this to spread awareness for other writers as well because a similar plagiarism issue happened in nctblr in the past in which someone used bts fanfiction and changed it to nct. They were not caught immediately because of the fandom differences. The current writing in question by jenovious was for enhyphen, and my fic I’m referring to is challenge accepted: asking your boyfriend to buy a feminine product that doesn’t exist, which is for nct dream. I would never have caught it if an ask wasn’t sent in because I don’t follow enhyphen. It really sucks that this would have flown under the radar because the writing was for a different group.

Additionally, she never admitted to nor apologized for plagiarizing my writing. I’d like to think I deserve at least a proper apology. She apologized because she “should have done research before posting it”, which I do not understand because why do you need to research other writers’ fics ahead of time? If you write them yourself, there would be no need to research other writers’ fics because they shouldn’t end up so alike. She also called it a mistake and said it was because she asked her friend for ideas for her fic and her friend said they got ideas from my reaction. She then sent me a text as proof. However, please see below for more details regarding the text message because it really seems a little bogus to me.

And now look at this text I created on ifaketextmessage.com. Additionally, as someone who codes and has created a GUI / worked on apps, I have a very hard time believing her classmates can create a fully functioning messaging software application absolutely identical to this website down to the spacing between each message and the battery usage, not to mention the copyright and trademark issues they’d be up against apple.

Her texts are on the left, and the one I created is on the right. I also did an overlay of it in Picsart to show how they match up and included a video below.

I have compiled the screenshots I sent her showing the comparisons of our reactions side by side. I know this is a tik tok trend, so they’re bound to have similar reactions given that she said she used the same video (linked here) for inspiration as me. However, the dialogue, especially the bits about not calling mark by his nickname and the “uterus” / “anti-climatic” in haechan’s portion, was written entirely by me. It is not found in the video at all. Moreover, I did not write my reactions verbatim from the video; I was inspired by the video and wrote my own dialogue. So why is her dialogue so similar to mine?

She wrote four reactions for four members of enhyphen. All four of them had similarities to my own reactions, which I have highlighted below.

I also saved full screen recordings of her reaction post before she deleted it and our DMs for more concrete proof. HERE is also a link to evidence of her copying my fic formatting and fic summary, and she never asked for permission to do so.

She copyrighted plagiarized work. She took my work and claimed it as her own. She was an admin of a kpop writing network where one of the rules is that plagiarism is not tolerated, and any member who commits it is terminated. She had asked me in the past if she could use my masterlist format as inspiration and credited me. She had also asked me how to disable the highlights and right click function on tumblr blogs in order to stop people from copying. She knows what plagiarism is, and it’s not fair or legal for her to claim my writing as her own. It’s just even more disappointing that this wasn’t done by a stranger since I know who she is and she has sent me very kind and wonderful asks about my writing in the past. I really wish she gave me an actual genuine honest apology for what she has done.

Do you know what the origin of the "sold to One Direction" thing is? I know it's a common trope (or was), but, I have no idea where I first heard of it, where I learned it was a thing. How do weird tropes like that get started, anyway? Why do some concepts take off and become huge parts of a particular fandom, but others don't? (And does this particular premise show up in other RPF contexts as much?)

tl;dr - Wattpad circa 2013, probably

I'm only familiar with that from doing Wattpad research. I don't think it's a major RPF thing, at least not under that exact name. Horny f!sub is kind of the Wattpad way, so a lot of the popular tropes there make sense from that perspective. I've definitely seen plenty of badtouch sexy slave/kidnapping victim/stalk-ee stuff with BTS and other music groups. But maybe somebody reading has more specific 1D history knowledge?

As for why one thing takes off and another doesn't, the big answer is:

Historical accident

We can look for patterns, sure, but a lot of it is ultimately survivorship bias. That's the thing where we look at what's remaining (successful companies, popular fic tropes), and we assume they have some special property that made them survivors and then extrapolate from that. But maybe it's coincidence, or maybe it's a different type of causality than the one we're looking at.

For example, a trope in a popular fandom will spread farther faster than a trope in a dinky little fandom, so maybe fandom size is what matters and not the nature of the trope. Most analyses assume it's the trope itself that matters.

On an individual basis, many specific tropes get popularized by a particular famous author or fic that other people imitate. Some get popularized by a fanworks exchange or fest. (That's how 5 Times fic spread.) But why do they stick around long term? Why do they gain traction elsewhere?

Aside from random chance, it's probably something to do with broad applicability and easy entry points.

So, for example, the show The Sentinel doesn't actually have Guides as such, but the AU added an official role for the other dude to make the two of them super destined. Sentinel AUs took off across a ton of fandoms. (Less so these days, but I've even seen them in BTS, so they're definitely not gone.) The AU version is basically soulmates + potentially codified top/bottom roles + superpowers. People like fantasy AUs. They like frameworks to fit their ship into. The trope isn't highly specific otherwise, so it can be tacked onto many settings, both real world and sff. It fits two-person ships easily, which is most popular ships. One can do some worldbuilding about whether there's One True Guide for a given Sentinel or whether the bond is more a matter of choice. Guides might be equal in numbers/prestige/public visibility to Sentinels or not. The existence of all this can be openly known by everybody or a secret like in the show.

A/B/O has a similar level of "proof my ship belongs together" stuff with room to play around with worldbuilding. It also overlaps heavily with prior popular tropes people like for pretty obvious horny reasons. Same with plenty of tropes. They're often a slight remix of already popular stuff.

Sense8 AUs, however, never really took off as a thing. I saw some fans sadfacing about this, but in this case, I think we could have predicted it. Why? Simple: the concept involves OT8, and that's not going to apply to most people's fandoms unless they happen to like a kpop group or a superhero team with 8 people. The 8 also don't have specific roles that would make this simpler to write. If you're going for less OT8 and more of a complicated network of relationships, that's a complicated story to write and it has much less of a template to work from. So low applicability + high barrier to entry.

Hogwarts AUs, on the other hand, are super popular. Why? My guess is that the biggest reason is that a million bajillion times more people know Harry Potter than know Sense8. Hogwarts also has some canned roles that are more obvious: which house is your Fave? Shit that could be in a clickbait-y personality quiz is easier to write fic about than something that requires you to make up everything yourself. But also, four houses are easy to keep track of in a way that all those Myers-Briggs types are not. Add too much mandatory complexity, and it gets too confusing.

If I had to guess about the popularity of Sold To One Direction, I'd say a lot of it is due to the problem of getting Mary Sue or y/n into the room with them. Why is she there? This fic concept provides the answer in one quick title or tag. Sexy slavefic and dubcon have had broad appeal since forever. There's room to go really dark or fluffier. Some of the fics are nothing but ravishment fantasies, while others are more abuse recovery stories (where 1D are better than whatever came before).

I don't think there's some simple answer for why this specific thing and not a closely related trope became such a known trope in 1D. Probably, if some BNF had posted a ravishment fantasy with a different pithy title at just the right time, some adjacent trope would be big instead.

As for why I've heard of this trope, it's absolutely due to 1D being a fucking massive fandom such that its popular tropes occur very frequently in a sample of Wattpad writing of the right eras. It definitely owes its lulzy memeticness to fandom size: lots of people care enough about 1D and 1D fic to know what the trends are and make jokes about them.

Here's Huffpo being dicks about 1D slavefic back in 2013. They don't mention the exact phrasing though. Here's a pretty standard specimen from 2013-14.

I presume this was also a big thing on Quizilla (RIP) and I see extant examples on Quotev. Sadly, these and Wattpad are fucking hard to study, and a lot of the meta-writing types stick to AO3, so I don't see as many good analyses of this part of fandom.

TAJ 🔍 Run BTS! • #1-3

If the episodes are short enough, or I don't feel like there's much going on, I'm going to fit several in a post.

Episode 1

First of all, it's very striking how young they are. Their youth and how early they are in their career plays a lot into this tenuous uncertainty and shyness with which they're presenting themselves.

If one were to compare their personalities then vs. now, the maknae line is showing flickers of the kind of people they are and will eventually grow into, but even without the comparison, they definitely have an awkwardness about them that's common in their demographic. (But it could also be nerves from starting this new piece of content.) The hyung line appear to be a bit more comfortable with themselves, which isn't unexpected to me. This isn't to say that they're at all finished with their self-growth/self-discovery, but it's evident in their demeanors where the divide is between the hyungs vs. maknaes.

There's nothing revelatory about this, but it's a little interesting watching this with "fresh" eyes and at the same time knowing more about BTS than I did when I first watched this content.

Episode 2

What's immediately noticeable is their group dynamic. This was what was most fascinating to me as I was discovering BTS, and this was one of the few pieces of content I watched that confirmed it.

I was never fully invested in Kpop but had been exposed to some of the 2nd generation groups, but from memory alone, there were instances where the chemistry was off or nonexistent between certain members, or there was a very distinct hierarchy that made it difficult for me as a consumer to enjoy their antics. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but I personally have a tendency to gravitate away from dynamics that feel stilted. The fact that BTS gets along the way they do was an added incentive for me to learn more about them instead of not giving them that chance.

Jin is also intriguing as the eldest because he doesn't overtly act that way. Again, my take is somewhat influenced on what I knew of Kpop groups prior to BTS, where the eldest (and usually appointed leader) would often flaunt their status to get a leg up on the others or there would be a very clear deferral to the oldest by (one of) the youngest. Yes, a lot of the time the hierarchy is played up for humor, but for some groups you had to wonder how humorous it actually was or if there was precedence. This isn't a critique on Korea’s cultural hierarchy, but it's an example of many reasons why BTS was a novel discovery for me.

Side note: Jin will forever be WWH–forget the "it boy," he's the "it man”–but Jin in his early 20s? Have mercy.

What's also really likable about BTS, as further exampled in this episode, is how uncaring they are about their so-called image. Sure, it's embarrassing, but the fact they willingly lean into it is very adorable.

I know, I know, there's no talk of Jikook yet, but they don't have substantial interaction until, I think, Episode 6.

Episode 3

I'm honestly kind of mad that I wasn't with BTS since their debut. I think this applies to anything I do within this fandom, but any commentary I make would be very different had they occurred in the time these moments were happening.

Not much to comment on, but it's always fun to watch them have fun.

Jimin is adorable in this episode. There's something so frenetic about his energy, most likely characterized by his youth, but I think it's a point of interest to me because I wasn't immediately drawn to Jimin when I was learning about BTS; he was the third or fourth member that I got attached to, and I don't really understand how I glossed over him the first time. Although one of the more confusing things I've always thought about is how Jimin clearly enjoyed himself on the amusement rides but later on doesn't seem to enjoy thrill rides of any kind. It's not a big deal, but it's surprising to me because given the nature of thrill rides, if you start off liking them, you are more than likely to continue having fun with them unless you encounter a trigger that completely alters that sense of enjoyment.

Anyway, we also must give props to the editing. I think this episode perfectly highlights the sense of humor the editors have.

Yes, I know. It’s quite anticlimactic. As much as I’d like to fast forward to the episodes with a bunch of things I could talk about, I do feel like it’s necessary to comb through everything from the beginning.

It’s hard to say how often I’ll be contributing to this series. It’s mostly a way to break up the content of asks/answers with more “original” stuff that fits the theme of this blog, so posts will happen... time permitting. In an ideal world, and if I were consistent, I’d do weekly or bi-weekly updates so I can move onto ITS or BV, but I’m extremely unreliable.
