Okay I'm watching a Kingdom Hearts let's play, and I have gotten to the point where Sora is about to do the Ansem/Riku boss fight, and I was looking at the Dark Mode suit and going, "Okay I know they reuse it for Vanitus, but I swear I've seen something else like them before." And then it hit me, Darklings.
In Union Cross we were introduced to the Darklings, which is a breed of heartless born from when keyblade wielders fall to darkness, and in Kingdom Hearts 3 it's heavily implied that Aqua was in the midst of turning into a Darkling.
Now, if we look at Riku's Dark Mode, we can see some similarities between the two, for one the end of Riku's gloves are a red just like the Darkling's claws and the ends of Aqua's fingers in the GIF above. The dark blue of Riku's suit actually goes with the dark blue that we see form on Aqua's skin, which I think is the replacement for the Darkling's black in this case.
Now I think we need to take a look at Darkness himself, Vanitus.
Vanitus color scheme is a lot closer to that of the original Darkling design which makes sense, as it was basically confirmed in Dark Road that he is the one of the 13 original True Darknesses, which Ventus sealed in his heart in order to give Darkness a form that they could actually beat.
Now let me make this clear, Aqua was in the process of transforming into a natural Darkling, so she would not have had the heartless symbol, as the emblem bearing Heartless are the artificially made ones.
Darklings don't have them, as they are naturally formed Heartless.
However, that begs the question, why does Riku's Dark Mode suit have the Heartless symbol but have similarities to both Vanitus and the Darklings?
I think Riku was forming into the very first artificial Darkling.
As at the time Riku was not a true keyblade welder, as he had not forged his own but he did have the potential.
Not only that, there was abundantly more artificial Heartless in the worlds then natural ones at the time, also Maleficent gave him the ability to control the Heartless, now that ability probably is not limited to the artificial ones, but that's probably a good catalyst as one of the reasons that he at the beginning of the transformation into.
One of the other reasons he could have possibly been turning into a Darkling, was the fact that he was exposing himself to so much darkness, but I think the reason why he would not have been a true darkling but an artificial one was because of Xehanort's Heartless, Ansem The Seeker of Darkness had intervened with the process.
As Riku was supposed to be his new vessel in order to gain access to Kingdom Hearts, but as we all know that's not how things turned out.
Now could I be wrong? Yes very much so, but it's a good possibility I could be close. It's really up for discussion at this point, because honestly I'm convinced that's what was happening.

Step 1: Sit down to write lore for the Black Arms.
Step 2: Decide the Darklings are a separate species and write intense lore about them instead.

Something bad’s about to happen to me…

I can’t recall if I’ve posted about it before, but I have been working on an original story called Darklings for a couple months now. The story has recently undergone a lot of changes so if I posted anything on here about it before it is no longer relevant.
The only context I will give you for this is that is is supposed to be the prologue to the story, and yes the actual written story’s prologue will be this vague and mysterious as well…enjoy :)

Felt like posting some of my older art from almost 3 years ago. I'll just do it in batches to keep it simple :)
All are OCs for one of my stories. I've had them all for a while, and though I considered changing Pekinaso's name a few times, she's one of my special few OCs and I can't bring myself to do it lol
Batch #1: Pekinaso, Torux, Arix, Darklings, Darkling Leader, Virus Dragon

Garbage at The Mann Philly 7/14/23
Shirley! Butch! Duke! Steve! All still rocking it after all these years. I saw them open for Alanis Morrisette at the Hollywood Bowl in 2021 and they were as good as ever so no missing them on this co-headling tour with Noel from Oasis. (Confession: I did not stay for NG so this was really the headliner of my night!)

Shirley came out in a flowy white and red ensemble that really just added to the otherworldly nature of her performance. Yes I peeped set lists before the show and was ECSTATIC to see that their cover of Siouxsie's Cities In Dust was on the list. I mean this set would have been great without it but this was what made the show extra good. I think nostalgic me gets really caught up in what these songs meant to me back then. It's a good feeling. Shirley was (and still is) a great voice for women in rock and she continues to inspire.
Video on my insta if you want to check it out.
