Ena was rambling to you one day that she has motivation block and even when she tries to draw something, she can never be happy from the result or gives up half the way, and she has to draw song cover for her group! So of course with her birthday creeping around the corner, you couldn't leave your girlfriend like that.

Luckily for both of you, her birthday was at weekend so you didn't had to worry about her school and instead could relax while realizing your plan. You told her that you'll pick her up since you recently got your driving license (let's say you're 18 here) and you also told her to bring some of her drawing supplies she likes the most. Sure, it took some convincing since you didn't wanted to spill the surprise but it worked in the end!

"Hey, I'm here. So care to tell me what you needed my art supplies for?"

"Just hop in and you'll see on the way!"

"Alright... You better not make me regret my decision tho!"

And with that, you started and somehow you even managed to make Ena forget about what you may be planning and both of you just enjoyed your company and rambled on your way to the spot you had in mind.

Once you finally arrived to small field where you could take a seat without a problem and she had space to draw pretty scenery.

"How do you like it!"

"It's lovely! I'm sure I can take some pretty good photos and maybe even draw something! That's why you wanted me to bring my art supplies, right?"

"Exactly! But if you don't have motivation, I won't force you to draw!"

"Don't worry. I think I'm gonna do it either way out of my own will. But first, say cheese!"

As she said that, she turned on camera ready to take photo of both of you and shortly after, of course she took a photo.

"Hehe~ Are you gonna post it on your socials?"

"Hm? Ah, no. It's for me and you alone~!"

It got you a little shade of pink on your cheeks but you were glad that both of you have something to cherish this cute little moment of yours.

"You're amazing, you know~?"

"H-Hey!! Why are you saying stuff like that so randomly?!!"

"I guess I couldn't stop myself! Anyway, happy birthday, Ena."

Hanasato Minori - Newbie Idol wanting to inspire Hope in everyone

Shinonome Ena - Veteran Idol, Choreography. Wants to understand what it really means to be an Idol.

Tsukasa Tenma - Veteran Idol, helps with presentation and personality. Wants to be able to see his sister smile and have hope again.

Mochizuki Honami - Newbie Idol. Unsure of herself and what she wants to do, but finds herself strangely attached to the idea of being an idol.

SEKAI: Stadium SEKAI

Fairly similar to the Stage SEKAI.

A huge stage that adjusts to the song/routine.

The background is of a giant sunset. The colour of the stage reflects that, being a warm orange.

Hatsune Miku - Alot like MMJ Miku, she shines of the hope that Idol’s bring.

KAITO - Seemingly a Veteran Idol in his own right. He helps with every aspect of being an idol - from choreography, to presenting on TV, to projecting your vocals. Also seen as a father figure and he cards for the 4 greatly.

Order of Appearance (StC)

Kagamine Len - Aspiring Idol who looks up the KAITO and Tsukasa. Makes alot of mistakes but does not let it bring him down and will always try better, more and more! (Appears in Main Story)

Kagamine Rin - A carer. She always has snacks and drinks with her to give to the others so they don’t wear themselves out. Also offers alot of words of encouragement to the others but doesn’t seem to take it to heart herself. Seemingly has a dream of being an idol herself, but is not confident.

Megurine Luka - Represents the need for attention in a way. She takes pictures of everything, from the Stadium, to the crowd, to the Idols, to herself. Luka also seems to have creative side that she is not scared to show off, showing her own painting and art. Ena doesn’t like her.

MEIKO - Works backstage. Makes sure everything is going as it should be, from lighting, to stage effects. She won’t let anything go wrong but if it does, she will blame herself and promises to do better next time and begs the other to forgive her mistake.

THE NEW CARDS-

THEY’VE BEEN REVEALED AND I-

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA

So, I'm going to analyze each card to ensure that I get everything I want to say out of my system! I'll probably make more posts once the English translations come out for this event, but until then, enjoy my speculation!

Mafuyu - In the Warmth of Glowing Dusk When I looked at the art for the first time, I just put my phone down and stared into space for a minute. IT'S SO PRETTY AAAA! Mafuyu is actually my favorite character (I've been debating this a long time, and while I love every character in N25, I think I can most closely relate with Mafuyu), so I shrieked when I first saw that the next event would be focused on her.

I'm glad my theory was right - that Kanade was indeed the one pulling her hand. I couldn't be too sure just from looking at the event teaser alone, but it makes sense! (I'll talk about Kanade in a little bit) I love this theme of an abandoned hospital, with flowers and plants being the only thing that's thriving. It's interesting, as we know that Mafuyu wanted to be a nurse, but then her mother pushed her to become a doctor. It appears Mafuyu is a nurse, but she looks far from happy. Of course, I haven't been able to read the event story yet (I haven't read a lot of the event stories for the N25 events that haven't come to the global server yet--I need to work on that), so I can't say for sure what exactly the upgraded art is representing, but I can say that it is drop dead gorgeous.

Mizuki - There's No Need to Be Afraid

What do you know, Mizuki is wearing one of their fun alternate outfits! As cute as it is that they're comforting my boi (I'll get to him momentarily) I kind of wish they was the three star of this event. The attribute to this event is cool (so I believe), and Mizuki definitely is in a lot of mixed events as a four star--and those events are cool attributes a lot of the time. This card line up is virtually the same as Mafuyu's previous event--except it's Len instead of Rin. Can't get too salty, as this art is still top-tier, but just something that I wish they had considered.

I like the continued hospital theme in Mizuki's upgraded art; it was actually what made it fairly obvious that an abandoned hospital was the theme! It appears that they're looking at...a mannequin? I mean, you wouldn't have a random person in the upgraded art, and Mizuki does love fashion, so it makes sense. But they look great in both versions of the card!

Shyly Greeting While Hiding

*inhales* MY BOI MY BOI HE'S HERE! Len finally made it to the Empty Sekai! Say hello to your new friend, depression! I just love how they made him all shy and timid for this Sekai, I think it's just perfect! He's so cute...I can't wait to see his full design! And I know Len is the focus of this card, but Miku looks really good as well :D

You can actually tell pretty easily that the upgraded art is set in the Empty Sekai, with is interesting, considering all the others seem to be in this remote hospital. I didn’t realize this first of all, because I was so focused on how sad my boi looked......Len......it he seems so shy in this Sekai I love it—I hope he warms up to the others over the course of the story, as I’m sure they’ll love Len.

The Best Angle for the Perfect Shot

I remember taking one look at this and just going, “hang hang hang hang on I—hang on I need to make that my wallpaper for like a billion things there’s all four of them I need this!!!" While I’m glad this card is practically free, this shot of them is so golden, so it’s incredible that it’s only a three star card.

I’m actually really interested in what’s going on in the upgraded art, as it seems to be a hallway.....but with like a ton of IV drips?! Maybe it represents the lives that could’ve been saved but were just around the corner....I honestly have no clue, but it is just as interesting as all the other cards! Ena my beloved....

As to Not Let Go of That Hand

Aaaa I love Kanade in this card! She seems happy, which isn’t always a given. But, I did mention earlier that I was a little bit salty about the gacha combination. I guess it just seems strange that Kanade is the one who is pulling Mafuyu’s hand, and....she’s the two star? Well, it is what it is! I’m still in love with all the card art. Sometimes Kanade is just so wholesome to me and I love her ;;;; And hey! At least this art makes it easier for me to draw these designs now :D

On that note, I think I’ve gotten down everything I wanted to (for now)! Bug sounds incredible, and the little snippets from the 2DMV look really cool too! Enjoy to those who are playing on the JP server!

Hello Mr. Jade Prideoftheline, you may be reconized me as @Susan363 who's often posting hcs, incorrect quotes and ideas on Olivia's blog. I send this message to you because I wanted to say that I really adored your Anpanman oc, Kaitojishaku. Despite not knowing much about him, I can see that he's a very funny character, and the idea that he and Horrorman are just a "dumb@sses in love" couple? Mwah! Chef kiss. 💋🤌

I really wanted to know more about Kaito, I would like to resquest that you put on his design, I know that he is suppose to be a magnet but I can only picture his head as a U size magnet. I hope that this isn't much to ask!

Oh yes yes of course! I can give a whole damn infodump about good ol' Kaito!

For posterity's sake, though, I'm slappin' this under a readmore. This is a long dang infodump!

Name: Kaitojishaku... or, that's their alias as a thief. Their real name is... last name Jishaku, given name Kaito. How creative. However, each "Kaito" is spelled differently in Japanese. The "Kaito" in their alias means "phantom thief" and the "Kaito" in their actual name is spelled in the way a given name might be spelled. Different kanji.

Pronouns: he/she/they. Albeit I think they'd be open to more. In Japanese, I think they'd tend toward the neutral and formal watashi for their "I" pronoun, just to amp up their dramatic phantom thief vibes.

Kaitojishaku was conceptualized to fill in a niche I didn't think was filled in the Anpanman 'verse: a gentleman thief/phantom thief archetype!

And of course, what's better at grabbing shiny things than a magnet? So, Kaitojishaku was born! And I started by making them the very fun flavor of morally grey that the Anpan-verse tends to lack. It's very black-and-white there, so I thought, let's throw some well-intentioned light grey in there!

Now onto design. Here is the very first piece of Kaito art, I'd say circa... August o' 2022?

Their design has changed a little since then due to interpretations from my good pal @olivias-hyperfixation-corner. Olivia interpreted their thiefy mask as cat-eye glasses, and I loved the thought of these being sorta... both! Kaito's metal body that isn't made of magnets and just metal got reinterpreted into a turtleneck sweater. So they just... kinda don't wear pants, ig.

But I did once draw them in an alternate outfit to show further limb motion and further establish their disproportionately long arms as intentional!

Oh, and their eyeshadow(?) changed a bit.

Kaito's two-tone design was definitely inspired by ENA.

Now, onto lore!

Kaitojishaku was created by a smithing fairy (think about how Uncle Jam is a baker and a fairy) named Anvil in a steampunky city that'd be a solid sleeper train's trip away from the main town in the show.

She was given two powerful gifts by Anvil. One was a jacket filled with pockets upon pockets. He can basically cartoonishly pull larger objects outta 'em. Bag of holding style.

The other gift he was given was a staff/cane of sorts in order to help him push off from any metal surfaces he encountered, but he didn't really seem to get it, instead getting frustrated with the world around him being something he just kept getting stuck to.

She left in the night, climbing up a nearby mountain as a thunderstorm raged. Yelling to the heavens on a cliffside, they were struck by lightning.

They fell down the cliff. For months, they were just... dead. In pieces. Magnet bits. All that was found of them when the town looked for them was their cane.

But... THEY LIVED. Kaito's pieces clicked themselves back together, but when they came to, their memory was scrambled, only a vague visage of a shiny city left in their thoughts alongside their name.

Their first place of residence was an abandoned baikin-lair they turned into a bunker of sorts. They decided with their name and their tendency toward shiny things, their purpose in life must be stealing. So, that's their thing for a little bit. Until it starts upsetting people. So now their thing is stealing and then immediately giving it back if they weren't supposed to take it.

Their first encounter with Anpanman involves her just grabbing a piece of his head very casually, and then when Anpanman's rightfully confused and distraught, she's just all "oh, did ya want that back? Sorry, here ya go." And then she just presses on. Anpanman says something along the lines of "How strange... nobody else just takes like that except... Baikinman."

Upon hearing this name, Kaito decides that this Baikinman fellow is worth meeting. A fellow thief! They make their way to the Baikincastle and introduce themself to both Dokinchan and Baikinman. Baikinman tells Kaito of his plots against Anpanman, and Kaito thinks it's all in good fun, so he agrees to help. He wants Kaito to go steal an anpan head so he can screw it up and replace Anpanman's head with it.

Kaito proceeds to leave and take WAYYYY too long at the bakery just having pleasant conversation with the bakery gang. They even end up politely asking to take some bread with them!

And they do! Off they go sneaking an entire head of anpan and not sneaking some additional bread for their new friends Baikinman and Dokinchan!

By the time they get back, it's been hours. Horrorman now pops in calling to Baikinman and Dokinchan because he made lunch and he's the only competent cook in this house, before he goes "oh, who's this, hora?"

And then Horrorman and Kaitojishaku hit it off immediately. Horrorman's willing to be nice to literally anyone and go with their plans until it turns out That's Bad and Kaitojishaku is willing to steal from literally anyone until it turns out That's Bad. They've a lot in common in that way, lol. This Is Relevant Later.

Baikinman baikinsciences the anpan head into a messed up one. He lures the bakery gang out and gets Dokinchan and Horrorman to guard all the entrances so Anpanman can't get a new head.

But this Messed Up And Evil Head is... not working as intended. It kinda just gives Anpanman an existential crisis. It was supposed to, y'know, make him evil for a bit, maybe.

Kaito realizes, hey, wait, that's just a dick move! Ain't that, like, psychological torture. So, time for a bit of counterstealing!

They go to the back door and... just ask Horrorman to let them in, because they need a favor. And "every good thief has a few accomplices!"

So he does. And Kaito gets a new anpan head! But Dokinchan notices and tries to put a stop to this. And her and Horrorman bicker a bit over this before Kaito throws a smoke bomb and with their epic phantom thief skills, scurries off.

They replace Anpanman's head after asking a very "distracted with trying to figure out how to improvise an anpan head" Jam and Batako if they would rather do the honors (and is ignored because they're absolutely frantic rn), they chuck the head onto Anpanman, typical genki hyakubai, anpunch, baibaikin.

Things calm down, and Anpanman says they really don't have to steal.

But Kaito argues that it's his purpose in life.

Anpanman says it doesn't have to be.

Kaito just asks why Baikinman is allowed to have his purpose be defeating Anpanman, if that's the case.

The truth is, Anpanman thinks Baikinman's too dead-set, but Kaitojishaku seems more receptive to change.

But Kaito's not ready just yet. They say that maybe their stealint will benefit everyone next time, and with another smoke bomb, they disappear.

Then the Hoshi story ensues! You've already seen that, but I'll link it for everyone else reading.

During that, Kaito has resolved to their new "stealing with permission, mostly" outlook, such as... "stealing" free samples. Or rocks off the ground. Or Hoshi back from Baikinman.

After that, there's the plotlines Olivia mentioned such as sleepovers, but I also have plans for another plot where Kaito meets their maker - literally! In Anpanman movie fashion, heheh. Good things happen there, worry not.

Oh. And I forgot Kaito's houseboat. Alongside their bunker, they have a houseboat they found abandoned and took up after realizing how big the world is. They name it the Kaito Go after the Anpanman Go, but, Sailorkun tells them most boats usually have SS before their name... so now it's the SS Kaito Go. It's just a tidy little vintage houseboat. Cozy!

But lastly, let me talk about their personality. Kaito tries to be very cool and sneaky and stylish, but they're also just silly at times. Their magnet hands will get stuck to their magnet body, for example. They have a knack for dramatics and tend to be very bombastic and energetic. But they also have a more caring, calmer side. That's the side that tends to get philisophical and all that. And in truth, they're more naive than one might think. They were created an adult, but barely had anyone to teach them... a lot, really. they don't have the basics down. They have random strings of advanced concepts known, though, so it's a big ol' scramble of things.

Kaito tries their best, honestly, and they don't mean harm. But they do wanna go grab loot and break into places and look cool doing it. And who can blame 'em?

Zellard

-Having lived for who knows how long, Zellard’s got some knowledge under his belt. He may not have a lot of personal experience, but he’s certainly read a lot (mostly lustful/romantic novels, but hey whatever works).

-He worships you like a goddess, seeing your both your mental and physical prowess as a work of art. However, he really loves your hands (I’ll leave it there).

-This man doesn’t get turned on very easily, but has a lot of hidden kinks. You don’t even know for sure what they are. You just do something you might find absolutely ordinary, but then he’s suddenly all up in your space.

-However, one thing you know for certain that he enjoys, is when you run your fingers down his spine. 

-The wyverian is a respectable man, and will not try or do anything without your permission. He also likes privacy. Zellard won’t provoke you out in public (that doesn’t mean you won’t do it to him).

-I feel like Zellard is a dominant man by nature. The two of you just kind of fall into the habit of letting him take charge. You rarely get to be dominant unless you somehow manage to take advantage of the situation.

-He also doesn’t have a high need for sex. It’s a rare occasion that doesn’t happen very often. However, when it does, it’s a passionate scene.

-The two of you did it the first time when you came home injured after some quest. He was so angry and then you got angry, and let’s just say you took your frustration out in other ways. Kind of a bad way to start things off, but everyone’s different.

-Making out isn’t really his thing. He’d rather have his hands roaming and exploring your body as your hands did the same to him.

-Zellard is one for romantic words. He would think of the most romantic and sappiest things to say during intimacy, causing your face to light up a lovely shade of red.

-He is diligent when it comes to aftercare. The wyverian tends to you like a mother hen, seemingly having no after affect of the night’s activities.

Alwin

-Alwin is by far one of the most respectable men out there. He doesn’t take advantage of the situation and does anything to ensure your happy and enjoying yourself.

-Despite his long years, he has little to no experience. Of course, he understands what’s suppose to happen, but it’s kind of cute that you two get to figure things out together. 

-Even though he’s new at it, you’d be surprised to find that he doesn’t make it awkward. In fact, his take charge attitude is kind of a turn on for you.

-Despite that, the only thing that is awkward is when you do things like make a dirty joke and he doesn’t get it, leaving you to try and explain it with a red face.

-The wyverian is a soft dominant type of guy. He’s very gentle, and taking in every sound and face you make to ensure your not in any pain. He is a protector at heart.

-Alwin is so touch-starved. This man can’t help but react when you do things like stroke his back, cup his face, or touch the back of his neck. However, one thing that turns him on is when you touch his jawline right below his ears.

-Also, he's got a decent ass, just saying.

-One place he loves to kiss is your neck. He loves that you trust him so much to give him access to that spot. Sometimes he gets lost in the moment and bites your neck, leaving some visible marks. He still feels quite guilty about that.

-I’ll be honest, your guy’s first time was after Alwin saw you take down a royal tigrex to protect him. Let’s just say, he was really impressed and grateful. This led to other things.

-Contrary to what his image portrays, this man is a sucker for make outs. You guys try to keep yourselves in privacy, but people can catch you both in some private corner in Rutoh in just the most heated make out session ever. 

-Ena still hasn’t recovered from seeing that (poor girl).

-Alwin is not one to initiate sex. Instead, he waits for you to start something. He doesn’t like feeling like he’s forcing himself on you.

-You guys see this intimacy as a privilege because he’s so busy most of the time. So, you cherish every night you get to do this. That, and hence why you guys do hidden make outs in Rutoh’s crevices and corners.

-Zellard is still disappointed.

-The wyverian can last for a surprisingly long time, which is good for the both of you to have a good time. However, this sometimes leads to him sleeping in when he should be out on patrol.

-Alwin is so doting on you with aftercare. He sometimes forces himself out of bed just to tend to you. You, on the other hand, just want him to come back and cuddle.

with shaky breaths, your tongue darts out to wet the dry planes of your lips— nervous building up as the pressure your teeth use to sink into the swell of your bottom lip. you shouldn’t be nervous. this is keigo, kei, the guy who sung songs about chicken wings and moved so fast his brain couldn’t catch up with his words. the guy who held you tight in his arms while you shook with fear, who stared at you warmly to calm your nerves on set.

keigo takami was the guy you’d fallen head over heels for.

you shift from under the blankets, the sight of your phone screen lighting up pulling you from your flurry of thoughts. the darkness of your room is brightened by keigo’s contact photo flashing before your eyes. 

it was a picture of him that you’d taken on a lunch date one day— his golden avian eyes that held nothing but the sun were focused on the delicious meal in front of him, a small, earth shattering smile painting his sweet lips. you could look at the photo for hours; but choose to answer the call before your mind can get away from you.

“kei,” his name falls easily from your tongue, tasting of familiarity and comfort, as if it were the only name you were made to say. you could never get tired of saying it, hearing it. “i missed you...”

keigo chuckles from over the line, the sweet melody reminding you of the songbirds that play their tune for you every morning. sinking into your oversized sweater, you suppress the urge to squeal like a school girl and roll over into your sheets— even the simplest things about him have you reeling from the other end of the phone. “missed me? baby bird it’s only been a few hours since you last saw me,” his timbre voice fills the air in your room, resting in every inch and every corner— surrounding you as if he was right there with you. “what is it about me that you miss baby? is it my eyes? my voice? my touch? my...”

which each suggestion, his voice drops an octave, making your heart thump louder in your chest to the point that you’re afraid he might hear it. an embarrassed heat burns at the tips of your ears, flustered without him even being there with you. “keigo takami,” you scold him gently, knowing that if he could see, the smile that spreads across your lips would betray you. “don’t you dare go making me flustered, i’m trying to tell you something important!”

“i’m all ears baby bird.”

he falls quiet, nothing but the sound of ruffling sheets and static between you. you know what you want to say, you’d practiced every word for hours with eiji over the phone before; but now that you were face to face or rather— voice to voice— you couldn’t even think straight. your palms are sweating, heart rattling against your rib cage and now your throat is dry. 

what can you say? what can you do? you don’t want to leave him hanging but you don’t know if you can form a proper sentence but it seems your mouth has a mind of its own; speaking before your thoughts can catch up with it.

“yn? baby?”

“keigo takami, i think i have feelings for you.”

you smack a hand over your mouth, just hard enough to send you flying back into your bed sheets and pillows. you had a whole speech prepared, a confession that could win oscars if you really wanted it to but of course, you’d gone and messed that up too. 

the silence that crackles in the air causes your mind to race with anxiety, how much of a fool you’d look if keigo didn’t feel the same. after all, he was the hawks, a pro hero who was just as good as anyone out there. number two on the ranks and at the top of the game, he could have any girl, any guy, any person he desired. so why on earth would he choose you?

“you think, or you know?” the pro whispers into his device and you could almost hear the smirk entangled with his very tone. he’s teasing you. hawks was always one for jokes and humour; one thing you loved about him was his ability to keep any situation light hearted— but for a second you wished that he took the situation seriously.  fumbling with your fingers, you debate on whether or not you should ask keigo to forget you ever said anything, you could deal with the repercussions after drowning yourself in mina’s ice cream later, but keigo seems to have other plans. “i like you too baby bird, i know i do.” he mumbles as if he’s gone shy, now he’s the one waiting anxiously for your response.

you release a breath you hadn’t realised you were holding, clutching at your chest as fresh air fills your lungs. “that makes two of us then,” you hum warmly, feeling your body warm up at the idea of your favourite pro liking you back.

but keigo doesn’t stop there, it’s almost as if he’s gripping the phone tighter— desperate to convince you that you’re everything that he needs. “i have for some time now yn, i don’t know when or how it happened, but i’m glad it was you. your heart and your soul are kind, half of me doesn’t want to taint it but the other half of me is a selfish bastard,” the hero you’ve come to care for pauses, mulling over his next words in a way that has you sitting up to prepare yourself. “that selfish side of me, that half of me needs you, wants to make you happy. that’s if you’ll let me, songbird...”

you find yourself nodding over the phone and it takes a second for you to realise that keigo can’t see you. desperately you wipe at your eyes, cheeks stained with tears you hadn’t noticed were falling and heart feeling more full than it’s ever been. 

you feel set free, cut from the restraints of your past love for bakugou— ready to make new ties with keigo.

“i want you too kei, more than anything.”

hawks lets out a contented sigh from his end, mumbling sweet words to you not long after. “then you can bet your ass i’m taking you on a date as soon as we’re both free, i’m gonna show you how much i care about you. how much i desire you, baby bird.”

the rest of the night is spent full of giggles and blushes and teases, keigo’s words burning a smile into your cheeks. eventually, he sends you to bed with the promise of a kiss as soon as he sees you next, hanging up the phone shortly after. 

plugging in your phone, you situate yourself amongst your pillows, ready to sleep with a smile on your face— when your phone lights up with a tweet notification from none other than the bird man himself.

‘sleep well, my baby bird, dream of me.’

it reads and despite the likes and retweet that flood the poor tweet, you know keigo wrote it especially for you. adding it to your bookmarks, before sending one of your own and drifting off to sleep.

‘goodnight bird boy, see you in my dreams.’

Notes: Written for Hatsune Miku's 14th birthday! This was not inspired by the official birthday art that Project Sekai released, since I wrote this back in July. What a happy coincidence that the art ended up featuring Nightcord Miku though!

Miku hummed a tune with no name, the very same one that had left her throat when she’d come to realise her existence in this colourless world, and that had continued to fill this wide space in the months that had passed since then. A song with no lyrics, only a melody that had slowly evolved, from a hopeless, flat loop to one with crests and peaks, able to bring a smile to the girls of Nightcord and elicit a warmth within her heart, which did not beat.

Miku appeared to be completely alone, standing in the middle of the nameless Sekai. Rin was nowhere to be found. Perhaps she was hidden in one of the many corners or behind one of the countless walls, as she usually was. No matter the case, there was no sign of her.

But the silence that pressed on Miku’s shoulders was made all the more conspicuous by the lack of Meiko or Luka. The boisterous pair loved to argue, having done so nonstop ever since Luka’s arrival. This place hadn’t been quiet since then, their raised voices carrying all through the Sekai, giving her and Rin no respite from the noise. They’d had to resort to sitting behind a wall, which helped to muffle the sounds somewhat.

Rin had complained many times while in that position, but Miku thought that the other girl likely felt the same as herself - happy, that it was more lively here, the air no longer cold and dead. She just didn’t know how to say it out loud.

Without Meiko or Luka around, the silence that had once been the norm was now rather... overbearing. How had the two put a stop to their arguing for once? Had they simply grown tired of it? What were they doing, then? In fact, what was everyone doing? Rin, Meiko, Luka… Where could they be hiding?

And… why?

Were they hiding from her?

The familiar sound of someone entering the Sekai broke Miku out of her reverie. She stopped her humming, turning to face the visitors, wondering which of the four girls from the real world had come to visit today, and for what purpose. Sometimes they didn’t seem to have a purpose, stating that they were here “just for fun”, as Mizuki liked to say. She didn’t understand why anyone would want to do such a thing, to come here “just for fun”, when she and her companions weren’t what was considered good company.

But she never spoke up. She liked being in the presence of the girls. Surely, her fellow Vocaloids felt the same.

If the girls had come to seek help or assistance, then Miku would render it, to the best of her power. She would do anything that she could, even if she struggled to comprehend the complicated issues and emotions that these girls toiled with. Kanade’s guilt, Mizuki’s uncertainty, Ena��s lack of confidence…

For that was her purpose for existing. In her first second of consciousness, she had held the knowledge that she was meant to give Mafuyu as much comfort as she could. A wish that had come to extend to Mafuyu’s three companions.

She could not save Mafuyu on her own. She did not possess the necessary power, or even a physical body to protect the vulnerable girl. Her own emotions confounded her - it was that rare that she could put a name to the currents of her heart, let alone tell Mafuyu the best course of actions to soothe her pain. She could only give what she deemed was the best advice possible. To truly help Mafuyu, she needed the help of kind Kanade, determined Ena, and sensible Mizuki.

Miku didn’t know why, or how, any of this had come to be. Other than by the strength, or perhaps more accurately, the absence of Mafuyu’s feelings. It did not matter. She would gladly perform her purpose.

Miku expected to see one girl. Perhaps even two. Instead, the sight before her shattered all expectations.

All four members of Nightcord stood before her: Ena, Mizuki, Kanade, and even Mafuyu. Ena and Mizuki were sporting matching mischievous grins on their faces and holding back laughter; Mizuki holding a ribbon-adorned box by the corners while Ena gripped… unfamiliar cone-shaped hats with polka-dots on their surface. Kanade had a small smile on her face, and even with the blank expression on Mafuyu’s face that she always wore, she came off as strangely jovial. Kanade had a giant stack of paper decorations balanced precariously in her arms, while Mafuyu held what seemed to be a folded banner.

Confused, Miku cocked her head to the side. What was all this for? The last time all four girls had come was when Kanade had played her new song for everyone to hear, and Mafuyu had broken into a small, true smile for the first time in a long while.

At that very moment, the memory of Mizuki telling her about birthdays surfaced. She was fairly certain they had mentioned all the “equipment” here were involved in celebrations.

So all of this was presumably to celebrate a birthday… But whose? Nightcord had already celebrated Ena’s, and Mizuki’s, just a few days before… Hm, she supposed she could wait for them to explain, for she didn’t know the dates that everyone’s birthdays fell on.

But none of the four said a word, only continuing to stand there as if waiting for something.

All of a sudden, a ribbon revealed itself over a nearby wall, swaying slightly. It was quickly followed by a familiar head of golden hair, blue eyes blinking as Rin stepped out, black-and-white dress fluttering around her knees. Meiko and Luka were not far behind, the two already glaring at each other, raring to go.

So the three of them had been close-by all this while? Why the need for concealment, then?

What was going on? She couldn’t help but ask that question to herself again.

No answer presented itself, and she could only watch as her three fellow Vocaloids walked up to Nightcord. Materials passed between eager hands, fingers pointing in every direction as everyone split up to the four corners of the Sekai. The atmosphere was festive, conversations held in airy tones to coordinate where to position decorations.

In no time at all, the Sekai was bursting with colour. Banners hung from the remnants of overturned lighting trusses, now fulfilling their original purpose of holding objects, though rippling fabric was a far cry from spotlights. The cone-shaped hats sat securely on everyone’s head except her own, the mysterious box safely stashed by a wall.

She was still frozen in the centre of the hubbub, hands clasped over her heart. A faint thought whispered in her head, tickling the corner of her mind like a feather.

She was the only one not being involved in the preparations. And just days ago, Mizuki had been spared from expending any effort on the day of their birthday, left to lounge in a corner and watch with a smile.

“Here!” The exclamation attracted her attention to a waving Mizuki, who ran up and came to a stop in front of her - the first person to approach her. With the additional height they had on her, Mizuki was easily able to plop what Miku now realised was a pink party hat on her head, gently adjusting the strap so that it ran under her chin. Miku could do nothing but blink and stare at Mizuki, wondering if she was dreaming, if any of this was actually happening, or if the Sekai had somehow collapsed and sent her into an illusion.

“Perfect!” Mizuki commented, grinning and stepping back, their hands clapping together with a resounding sound that knocked Miku out of her speechless daze. “You look so cute, Miku!”

Upon spotting everyone else calmly walking over, she finally opened her mouth, fingers tightening over her chest.

“Is it…?”

Those were the only words she managed to get out before she clammed up. She couldn’t articulate the thoughts racing through her mind, nor the conclusion she had arrived at.

It couldn’t be fake. That was the only thing she was sure of. The colours, the sounds, the people and the expressions on their faces, their true emotions… It was all too vibrant, too real, too much.

Kanade nodded, seemingly understanding everything she wanted to say from her shaking words alone. Ena did the honours of cautiously opening the cover of the box with a steady hand, revealing a beautifully crafted cake, swirls of whipped cream artfully forming the border, strawberries topping the vanilla.

Written elegantly on its surface in red cream were the very words that left Kanade’s lips now.

“Happy birthday, Miku.”

“Yeah! Happy birthday!” Both Mizuki and Ena chirped, reaching into their pockets and throwing out handfuls of confetti that caught in her hair.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done for us,” Kanade continued.

“Yes.” Mafuyu nodded. “Happy birthday,” she said in her usual flat tone, face displaying no sign of emotion. Perhaps Mafuyu was only saying it to go along with what she’d been told to do, to avoid angering Ena. Perhaps she meant nothing by those words, was truly incapable of packing any scrap of emotion into them.

Yet Miku could sense… that same smile from the time before, hidden behind the pale, unmoving expanse.

“I…” Miku murmured. Something was choking up her throat. Her heart both felt like it was soaring, and like an invisible hand was squeezing it, something intangible filling it up to the brim. It was so full that it hurt. Not a sharp pain, but an ache, one that consumed her whole chest.

Something wet slipped down her cheek, salt hitting her tongue.

“You’re… crying,” Mafuyu said, eyes a little wide, just a little hint of awe in her voice, where there should have been none. It was, after all, nothing but an observation.

Miku reached up a trembling hand to press against her cheek, bringing it away stained with tears.

Ah. Mafuyu was right. The impossible had happened, emotions making their sudden, mystical appearance when they should have been kept away, blocked by an unbreakable lock.

“Miku…” Mizuki muttered, gaze sympathetic, a small smile on their face.

“Thank you,” she finally managed to force out, breaking into a smile larger than any that had come before, stretching from one corner of her face to the other, even as tears continued to leak from her eyes.

She knew now, why her heart hurt.

As she enjoyed a wonderful day in the Sekai with those that had become her friends, a day that she would never forget - eating the delectable, sweet slices of her birthday cake; being subject to Mizuki’s hairdressing as they tried their best to tame the unruly tangles of Miku’s massive locks with an assortment of ribbons; receiving birthday wishes and the strangest of presents from everyone... she finally came to understand.

The answer had arisen, making itself crystal clear.

Her heart hurt from happiness. True happiness, which could shatter just as easily as it could uplift, could stab just as much as soothe, when one was not used to it.

True happiness, from her friends remembering her birthday.

True happiness… from someone finding her existence worth celebrating.

And there were still some questions that couldn’t be solved, the answers to which were not in sight, and may never be.

But that was alright.

She would simply eke out her existence, moment by moment, taking what may come and enjoying the company of her friends.

Happy New Year everyone! I'm actually kinda excited for this one! This is my final upload for 2021, and it happens to be a request from Reddit! The request is from www.reddit.com/user/No-Measure… , with inspiration taken from www.reddit.com/r/ENA/comments/… I had a lot of fun designing what I think would be ENA's room, I have a lot of weirdcore/dreamcore ideas, and luckily a lot of it fits for ENA's world. I'd like to think it'd be a lot like 80s vaporwave stuff, and something simple. I was going to add a lot more things to her room (such as posters on the wall and books on the shelf) but I had no time to imput them or they would've been too difficult (mainly for the books on the shelf 'cause perspective's a bitch). I'd love to draw more of her if she wasn't so difficult to draw. I feel like anything weird/dream core I make would be applied to ENA's universe since it fits so well. I really tried to go for a lineless art piece, since I feel like I was to drift away from that sort of style (at least a little bit). I really like doing lineless pieces because they remind me of paintings, which is what I do try to go for in these types of pieces. However, I am aware I did cut corners with the shading, which tends to happen with said pieces. I wish I also did a better job with ENA's hand and body form (under the blanket) since it feels so...sloppy. I put way more effort into the background than I did the actual character, and it does make me feel a bit guilty. Overall though, I like it! Could be better, but it isn't horrible! ladies and gentlemen the annual post you never asked for

summoning plans!! (2024 addition because man I have a mild addiction and as a f2p I cannot afford to be broke over banners I do not actually care about that much and-)

feel free to use this as well, I have found that it is rather helpful!

here's the initial layout (subject to change per the usual)

My ramblings under the cut :) :

Cutting down from last year's eleven banners to five?! insane. this is due to a) really thinking about what cards are actually the most appealing in my mind and b) time constraints. I really only play prsk for half an hour a day (at most, sometimes I may go a few days without due to having a life (a shock)), so I realized this year that the time required to successfully acquire the cards I wanted was nonexistent. so we're being reasonable! I think I had to cut out little bravers, the valentines event, both of the Kohane focus events, the toya dragon event, the Kanade Zamza (so excited for song btw) event, light up the fire, holy shit this is a lot, the latest akito event, and the third-anniversary event?? I mean, that last one should have the dream pick, so obviously, I'll try to pull a little, but we'll see how the savings are.

A reminder that doing these is kind of just a way for me to personally organize my thoughts and that anyone is welcome to try this!! visually this just helps me a lot.

Okay, now some more reasoning (again half for my own benefit) to pull on each banner:

In the Corner of a Resonant Town (ALL OF THESE CARDS ARE SO PRETTY WTF)

Shiho: I technically have a limited of her among a couple of other four stars, but the theme of this whole set shot an arrow through my heart the moment I saw it. It's just??? I have no words

An: similar reasoning as Shiho, I have her fest card and two other normal ones, bUt HeY oNlY tHe LiM cAmE wItH a CoStUmE-

Ena: did I just say that I was skipping her fest because I gained a lim of her this year? yes. do I still want this one and will fight to acquire it? yes.

Miku: I actually have a couple of Miku four stars already, but I feel like seeing her on a rate up nowadays is becoming...rarer? probably due to the need to put other virtual singers on banners to balance out how many she had at the beginning of the game, but there's no doubt the frequency at which she's on banners is significantly less (unless she's the focus or smth). not to mention that because she has six versions of herself, it's even rarer for one that you might like a lot to be on a banner?? so far this is one of three Leo/need Miku four stars, and the only one that's limited, so you know damn well that if it's this pretty I'm going for it.

Our Escape for Survival

Mizuki: hot take the 3D outfit isn't that good but the art of it is AMAZING. I saw a comment somewhere saying "wow they look like k-pop idols" and as a fan of the genre my fate was sealed. while it is a mizuki banner, it's a limited one, so I feel like there's a bit more reason to summon. again, it's time dependent, so if I can't it's not the end of the world.

Mafuyu: MAFUYU. this card was my computer wallpaper for a period of time so it'd be a crime not to try for it. I'm trying to only get mafuyu lims/focuses as I have an abundance of her (as a mafuyu collector any mafuyu is accepted), and this one is really nice, and the hairstyle is refreshing imo.

Luka: partly out of desperation to get some of the newer virtual singer cards that release (many of the ones I have are quite dated at this point), but also this is so pretty hello?? easily one of my favorite Luka cards if not my favorite. k-drama set lessgo baby

Saying Goodbye to My Masked Self

Mafuyu: at this point I've come to accept that I automatically pull on Mafuyu focus banners, and that's been quite successful! the only mafuyu focus I still have not claimed is the intersecting melodies one (one day... one day...), so I can say that all normal rate-up banners have gone quite well. while I haven't been following the story very closely lately, I know that this event is very important for her arc, and as bittersweet as it is her trained card in this set is relieving.

Kanade: tbh her and ena are here because this is just a mafuyu focus that I will summon on, but hello they're actually pretty?? the cards in the Snow White set were mid outside of mafuyu (so basically just mizuki and rin), so I would happily pull more even if I already got Mafuyu. also. I currently only have one kanade card, and it doesn't have a costume, so I'd like to fix that.

Ena: same reasoning as Kanade (except I have a solid supply of ena cards and I just find this set pretty)

N25 World Link Event (oh boy)

Since all of these cards are fantastic (even if they're not limited (?)), I'll just come out and say that I love them all and I hope that they come home. Genuinely was at a loss for words when I first saw them and I'm very excited for the event when it comes to global.

Now, here I was thinking: man, with the Sanrio collab, I think that's a good amount of gacha for the year!

And then the new year banner came into existence. Not even kidding it has altered my plans so much, I won't go back and edit each thing as that's confusing but list them below:

Resonant Town will stay the same, I only need to do 200 pulls to spark for someone I want (as I have ten stickers, I'm assuming that's still how it works? I've never saved enough to spark lmao)

May skip Survival depending on how much I spend on the previous banner. It'll probably end up being leftovers from Resonant Town if I have any. But from here on out, it's hardcore saving time!!

Masked Persona will have to be a pull-until-Mafuyu-and-then-quit because as much as I could use a Kanade four-star, I'm hoping to get that from the World Link event. At this point, I make sure to summon on Mafuyu banners because I have all of her standard focuses, and I've been pretty lucky with not having to spend too much to get her each time (fingers crossed it stays the same).

World Link event will depend on what happens over the first ten months of the year (damn, they really had to put the best banners in the last two months of the year didn't they), but I hope to spend a bit on this one. Then again, there is the chance to get them on other N25 banners, so even if I couldn't get all of them I wouldn't be too worried.

Sanrio Collab (not pictured) is still a must!! If I have to limit the World Link event for this, then I shall! It presents the opportunity to pull for characters I don't usually want to (Saki, Airi, and Emu), so I'm looking forward to it!

New Year's Banner......all of these characters are stunning (and Mafuyu is a 3-star and an amazing one at that, literally better looking than some of the earlier four stars), so...I really don't have any words

Obviously, as the year goes on, I'll see how I feel about these sets, but I'm pretty happy that I managed I've managed to cut down on how much I want to summon (it's like a diet guys). Again, I put my thoughts down here not only because doing all of this rambling helps my thought process but also because I think it's helpful and encourages others to use it if they're unsure of what they want to pull on!! Happy New Year's, folks, I hope 2024 is a good one !!!

Reader’s Corner: Carole and Tuesday, SW Guardians of the Whills, and Laid-back Camp, Vol. 10

Laid-back Camp, Vol. 10

With the recent season long gone and months since volume nine was released, I’ve been suffering from Yuru Camp withdrawal. There’s nothing out there quite like this series, with the sense of peace and fulfillment that it brings (along with plenty of humor). Volume ten, which moves past the point where the second season of the anime finished, is no different. It starts off with a backyard camping excursion at Ena’s house (which means plenty of Chikuwa!) and leads into the new Ooi River arc, which begins by partnering an unexpected duo—Rin and Ayano, Nadeshiko’s childhood friend, who ride their bikes together on the first part of this trip as they await the arrival of their mutual friend, who will first be making a short solo camp. If that storyline sounds a bit of character for Rin and Nadeshiko, it’s not—these “uncharacteristic” endeavors are a symbol of how the girls have grown in the time they’ve known each other and joined with their other friends in camping. The steady growth of the characters in the series is what elevates it into something a bit more thoughtful, even as it never drifts far from a humorous tone (there are plenty of laughs in the volume—I found myself guffawing every few pages). It’s also reflected in drawings of the characters that demonstrate evolving looks, particularly with different hairstyles—a lovely touch that helps readers draw all the nearer to the girls as they grow closer to one another, and a nice surprise, showing that this series isn’t languishing ten volumes in—it continues to get better and better. ~ Twwk

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten, vol. 2

You know those Reddit posts where people try to figure out if their crush actually likes them? Those posts where they list out all the reasons why they think the other person isn’t into them, but it’s painfully obvious to everyone that the other person is, in fact, into them? Have you ever wanted to read the grand novelization of all those posts? Look no further than The Angel Next Door, whose slow-burn romance simmers at the speed of a Crockpot on low. I’m serious: volume two features Amane and Mahiru bridging the immense gap between “we’re not sure if we like each other” to “we like each other but we’re not sure if we want to confess it.” And it’s cute. But it also feels strained, shallow, and a little ridiculous–like Saekisan’s more interested in farming cute interactions than cultivating a tender relationship between the leads. True, there are some things to appreciate here, like Amane’s hesitance to confess because he doesn’t want to gamble what he has with Mahiru, and Miharu’s continual selfless care for Amane. I’ll definitely stick around for the next volumes. But at this point, the food’s been cooking so long that I’m despairing of ever actually enjoying it. ~sleepminusminus

Uncle from Another World, Vol. 2

Even though the characters and main gags are already known and firmly established, Uncle from Another World masterfully delivers unexpected laughs. In fact, I don’t think there’s a series right now that makes me laugh harder or for longer than this one. Takafumi’s uncle, who in volume one returned after 17 years in a fantasy world (while his body was in a coma here), has found his path in the modern world—as a YouTuber of course, using the magic abilities he returned with to create incredible videos and running through not-quite-expert gameplays of games from his youth. In the meantime, as he shows Takafumi’s childhood friend and his nephew memories of his time in the fantasy world, it’s clearer than ever that in friendship, life, and romance, this isekai’d hero doesn’t have a clue. The setup and art are both understated, and that sets a foundation for detailed explosions, fanservice, and over-the-top gags that sneak up on the reader, delivering a bounty of humor. And the series seems to be gaining steam, building upon with its unique execution and offering a multitude of directions that it can go both in its modern, earth timeline and in continuing to reveal Takafumi’s past interactions with love interests and would-be friends alike. I expect this wonderful blend of hilarity and smart writing to continue in volume three. ~ Twwk

Star Wars: Guardians of the Whills (The Manga)

Despite my affinity for Chirrut and Baze, the noble and caring men who protect the Kyber Temple on Jedha, and my further love of the movie in which they first made an appearance, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, I find it a peculiar choice that their tale received a novelization, much less this manga version of said book. They’re older characters, better suited to a supporting role than a starring one. However, the fluid and quick-moving adaptation by Jon Tsuei and excellent paneling and illustrations by Subaru changed my view as I read through the story. Chirrut, the blind guardian of the Kyber Temple, and former guardian Baze provide the same strong sense of character they had in the film, the earlier as a peculiar and wise warrior monk and the latter as an passionate and impatient gunner, as they are drawn into the rebellion by way of attempting to save an orphanage from violence and preserve the people of Jedha against the oppression and violence of the Empire. Again, just as with the film, the question of ends justifying the means takes center stage, and here, Chirrut’s philosophy is more fleshed out, providing plenty of food for thought without pushing an answer down readers’ throats. That contemporary theme mixes with a suitably tight story to produce a excellent adaptation for Star Wars fans that continues to extend the galaxy into reaches far away (but compellingly near to home). ~ Twwk

Carole & Tuesday, Vol. 1

This review is a bit backwards—even though I reviewed volume two of Carole and Tuesday already, volume one arrived at my doorstep recently, and it was a pleasure to get back to Mars and thes titular two girls and their dreams. For those who haven’t had the pleasure to watch the anime, Carole and Tuesday is about the two girls, who meet up in Alba City. Carole plays the piano and Tuesday can write lyrics, and when they meet by chance on a bridge, the duo decides to compose a song. Unfortunately, they have a hard time gaining attention on social media and even finding a gig to play. What keeps the girls going is their hope to play on stage one day like other famous musicians and make music that inspires people. The artwork in the manga is just as beautiful as the anime, even in black and white! Tuesday is ditzy and naïve but encouraging and helpful, while Carole is more street smart and has more life experience, so they both lean on each other’s strengths. I’m a fan of this duo and their journey demonstrating life’s ups and downs—and I think many of you will feel the same. ~ Samuru

Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga, Vol. 2

Do you love the 1960s Batman series? Did you already read my review of the previous volume? Well, that review still holds true for volume two. In thse chapters, Jiro Kuwata introductions his vision of Clayface as well as a villain named “The Outsider” who is a super-powered, undead version of Alfred. The entire volume is filled with BAM BOOM POW moments that feel like extended versions of the 60s TV series. Yet, they’re simultaneously quite different. The stakes are still at the level of “this will be figured out by the end of the arc and all will be well again.” Yet, the tone is definitely getting darker. One of the stories involves the death of Alfred and his inadvertent resurrection as a character reminiscent of Doc Manhattan from The Watchmen. But despite the darker feel of the stories is this volume, it still captures that same magic and fun that made me keep on reading the original volume. It’s still a lot of fun. ~ MDMRN

Strobe Edge, Vol. 10

After discussing in some detail my frustrations with Strobe Edge over the last weeks, in volume ten, the story is finally released from Sakisaka’s weaknesses—a plot driven forward by tunnel vision and frustrating inner monologues, as well by contrived events in the story—in this final volume, where the joys of the mangaka’s work rather shine: the lovely-hearted characters and the panels in which drawings move from realism to cuteness, and often from sadness to joy. There’s a lot of that as Ninako and Ren finally talk it out, with striking panels accelerating that doki doki feel of the final chapter. But that’s not all—there are several bonuses in volume ten, including after stories and a side story about Manabu, who is probably the only character in this series I actively disliked, though after spending an entire chapter with him, I came to appreciate him a little more (I’m always a sucker for oddball romantic combinations, which is at the center of his tale). All in all, volume ten is a strong, uplifting ending to a series that was inconsistent, but at its best a lovely work that’s foundational for one of today’s top shoujo mangaka. ~ Twwk
