What she says: I'm fine

What she means: in act 1 Macbeth and his wife are physically apart, they obviously don't hear each other's soliloquies but they always know each other's thoughts, they are quite literal partners in crime (and in greatness), which makes it all the more jarring when in 3.2 they are on stage together, talking to each other, and even assuming each other's language to a point where there's an obvious sense of déjà-vu, and yet their understandings are exactly opposite, marking the beginning of the end and the breakdown of communication between them. In other words arguably what destroys them is the role-reversal that makes each of them too much like the other and leaves them vulnerable to new flaws and fears, which in turn leaves room for the guilt and paranoia to filter in, and just like that the most intimate marriage in all of Shakespeare's theatre is done for. They will never be intimate again. I could just about scream.

What literature actually is

When you are an advanced level student studying literature without going to tuition classes, people have a lot to say to you. Most of the time, it’s something like,

You have to memorize entire poems and the biographies of the writers

Your marks depend on the way your teacher/ examiner thinks

It is very difficult to get marks and should be avoided if you’re attempting to get straight A’s

However, after studying literature for nearly five years, I can testify that these opinions are - in fact - rather correct, though there are certain things that I would like to clarify.

so, in short, literature is,

1. Understanding texts thoroughly and seeing society as presented by them.

2.Writing ALL the correct points rather than elaborating the ones with most examples.

3. Paraphrasing through most of the text because you can’t remember proper examples, then using certain words/phrases from the text in your sentences with the use of quotation marks.

4. Being open and frank about what you feel and sticking to one opinion.

5. Writing additional 2-6 pages yet still under the same time limit that you had in your junior years.

6. Being so invested in the text/question/argument yet being unable to savour it because you’re in a time crunch.

7. Just wasting pages and pages of what you think is the right answer just to get a handful of points.

8. Witnessing your confidence being torn to shreds while your teacher marks your paper.

9. Never knowing the right answer.

10. Never being able to predict anything; from questions to results.

11. Learning to never expect anything big out of what you write.

that’s all I can think of rn, but I still should the opinion that everyone should actively learn literature as it can impact humanity in marvelous ways.

22. Did you ever skip class in school?

Yes! 😂 Not so much in uni (the only time I can recall wasn't skipping but attending from home instead of in person and then not paying attention). In high school for sure, I barely attended English in my final year (with the teacher's blessing btw)... In uni I've only skipped an exam for a concert I got tickets for before knowing the exam date 💀💀

27. Do you believe in Astrology?

Nope! Don't get me wrong, I do love to indulge in magical thinking, but I don't actually believe in any of it (if that makes sense?). Fun fact: in the Middle Ages, astrology and astronomy were connected, and the idea wasn't to predict the future in a secular way, but that God communicated with people through the stars.

28. What was the last thing you Googled?

My username to find my Tumblr account to make this post easier (cause the app doesn't let me go back and forth between the post and the draft that easily) 😂 Then I found out someone has an insta w this username and lemme just tell you rn: that is NOT me. And because I got the ask before I googled that: the search BEFORE that was spinach tea, curtesy of @fyrogflamme

#I finished my final couple of years of hs in what I guess was adult education #Usually people who fail a few classes on their final exams redo it this way #I just took all classes there which isn't common #And which meant I didn't have mandatory attendance the way ordinary schools (even uni etc) tend to have #My teacher also knew I read and wrote a lot and that class wouldn't be beneficial #So while I skipped classes cause I didn't wanna go at other times the English example probably isn't the best lol #(keep in mind this is ESL English #not lit or whatever)#Meme #Ask and response #Bagelhagel #Ty for asking 😘😘😘
