Does Hokusai's kind of transphobic remark in the Imaginary Scramble event sucks? Yes.
Does the overall handle of Van Gogh's history of struggles with mental issues could have been handle A LOT better? Absolutely.
However, while the event has these and many flaws, we should talk about the good parts too:
-Xiang Yu.
-Guda having more dialogue that shows how kind, silly, asertive and screwed lose they can be after years of dealing with the grand order.
-Caster Gilles perspective about the Foreigner Class servants.
-The way swimsuit servants were brought into the main story and how half-serious, half-joke is treated.
-Fran's interactions with Goghie and Lambda.
-That one scene where Nemo calls out for Goghie, asking her to choose her own identity and that everyone in Chaldea will accept her no matter what. (I could talk for hours about that scene alone.)
Maybe is just me looking for the shiny amongst the trash but, while not a great event, it did have its moments.

Do you know what took me the longest time to realize playing Fate/Grand Order for at least 4-6 years now?
That Berserkers are weak to Foreigner servants because of their lack of sanity.
When you think about it, for a heroic spirit to become a berserker class servant they got rid of any sanity left in them to gain the power to defeat their enemies in the Holy Grail War. In some cases, a berserker class can be the weakest and strongest class because they are a power balance to weigh out the war from any other servants that might get a head start to fight them. In FGO Berserker servants and enemies gain a 2.0x double attacking power against any class of servant besides you know Foreniger class.
It’s crazy how the most cracked-out class unit of the game, let alone the fate franchise could be the most balanced by just selling the sanity for going berserk.
 But then Hercules exists.
To this very day, I am baffled that Hercules in his Berserker form is his WEAKEST form. It melts my brain just thinking about it because even in his weakest class he is a literal war machine let alone a straight-up beast doing unimaginable feats that question myself how insane the greek servants are in Fate.
Tumblr media
(Don’t get me started on his list of noble phantasms like his 12 labors, God's Hand, and Maine of the Nameaon Lion because we would be here all day.)
Long story short The Berserker class is insane, which brings us to the Foreigner class and why they upset the power balance of the Berserker class.
Foreigners at the time were a class of servants that made contracts with beings beyond the fabric of reality. They are what we know are the Outer Gods and Elder Gods from the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. These are creatures that no mortal human can comprehend exist. Just looking at them can burn your brain to mush and losing your mind. Berserkers are no exception. The Elder Gods, Outer Gods, and The Old Ones all consume chaos and insanity as their drive, berserkers lack not enough sanity to fight a foreigner. If we’re going by not only the lore of H.P. Lovecraft and Fate lore chances are the berserkers have a fighting chance, but then lies the problem.
While half of the roasters of berserkers do have sanity left in them to function freely they are limited by their madness enhancement. Even some of the Foreigner class servants currently in the fgo roaster are alien's life forms from our solar system and universes that aren’t in contact with any Outer God.
MHX, MHX Alter, Mysterious Ranmaru X- Servantverse
Voyager- Satellite of Pan-Human History
The Types/Ultimate Ones- Alien Life forms
The Olympians- Gundams
Mesoamerican Gods- Gundams but if they were spiders
Now we do have the Salem manga in the Epic of Remnant manga series being published so we might have a chance to see a berserker and foreigner fight each other. Unfortunately, I don’t where to read the translated manga online so I don’t mind waiting for the pages to be translated into English let's hope for the best!
(I would also add in the Mooncell since it is also alien in origin but my brain cells aren’t ready to go back to the Extra lore. I don’t wanna go back please.)

Yay finally I got Hokusai! So I have 2 foreigners now. Just like Abby, she has a mesmerizing np! Her np is actually her drawing the infamous painting called "The 36 views of Mount Fuji" specifically, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. Compared to Abby, Hokusai can loop! So you can easily access her np better.
Interestingly, the girl is not Hokusai but rather its the daughter Oei. Hokusai is the octopus one next to her. So no gender bend! It also kinda makes sense since they use the same pen names so they are quite synonymous with each other and are great artists.
Also they are the ones that started the tentacle porn. So you're welcome
= w = )
Since they are foreigner class, they are being possessed by Cthulhu (This is visible on her third ascension shown below)
Tumblr media
Third Ascension. Note that his father actually merged and took control of Oei's body hence...the alienish appearance.
Tumblr media
First Ascension. Oei and his octopus father Hokusai.
I'll send her normal attacks and her noble phantasm!

I didn’t know anything about Elvis before seeing the Elvis movie, but in retrospect, saying in my Foreigner Class Servant post that Elvis became famous because he made a deal with a malevolent entity was shockingly appropriate
And the implication that Colonel Tom Parker was a guise donned by an Outer God is also just really funny

It’s so funny when liberals lecture communists about not knowing how anything works, that we need to grow up and face the real world etc, while publicly demonstrating that their political imagination is so deeply impoverished that they genuinely believe the only thing the leader of the most powerful country on the planet in all of human history can do is block a slightly more fascist guy from taking his place every four years

i wish that there was more time between the day of black sun and sozin's comet bc zuko's official desertion from the fire nation would have the most insane ripple effects (and it would be nice to see the gaang interacting a bit more than we got but hey i'll take what i can get)
zuko's desertion would have been essentially impossible for the fire nation to bury since it was such a big deal that he returned at all. so i imagine the smear campaign against zuko would have been craaazy. i think it would have been interesting for the gaang to try and deal with that when navigating the FN. zuko would be very recognisable i think at this point, and it would have made staying hidden much harder. would they still have chosen ember island? maybe the kids didn't recognise zuko and azula during The Beach , but with the prince of the fire nation committing treason would there be more wanted posters? would there be more talk around the island? would zuko have to remain hidden while the rest go out and get food?
i wonder if zuko deserting and very meaningly committing his loyalty to the avatar influenced other soldiers in the FN to also desert? or would it have had the opposite effect and made people feel more patriotic since zuko was banished, returned under the guise of having killed the avatar, and then left when aang announced his survival to world during the failed invasion?
SPEAKING OF THAT!! the rumours around this would be INSANE. we know what really happened, but the public don't. did zuko and the avatar plan this so that there would be an inside man during the invasion and then zuko used that chaos to escape? what really happened in ba sing se if zuko didn't kill aang, but azula thought that he did? (again: we, the audience know the truth, but the general public don't). if zuko and the avatar where working together... for how long? was iroh involved somehow since he also disappeared the same time that zuko did? did iroh get captured on purpose to be close to zuko to possibly help him if needed? did zuko break iroh out of jail or did one of the guards or was iroh alone? you could spiral on this as just an average person in the avatar world for years like. if youtube existed in atla imagine the video essays breaking down all the conspiracies
its a kids show so obviously Nothing Bad Happened BUT in the Boiling Rock, zuko getting found out as not only an imposter (already, a very bad situation), a traitor (extremely bad), AND the traitorous (ex) prince of the fire nation (devastatingly terrible) would have been... incredibly dangerous for zuko. in zuko and iroh's original wanted poster, the official translation says “Permission is granted to kill them on sight” and this was before zuko has gone right ahead and committed Treason On Purpose. the warden is not going to be nice. when the warden visits zuko in his cell he literally tells him "If these criminals found out who you are, the traitor prince who let his nation down, why they'd tear you to shreds." the boiling rock would be hell trying to survive. it also puts a lot more weight on zuko refusing to leave sokka in their first escape attempt. also ozai obviously knew that he has his son was in prison bc he... broke in to the prison bc azula was there but then zuko manages to escape with sokka (another imposter) and suki and hakoda (POWs) and chit sang (a prisoner) and two of azula's trusted friends end up in prison for treason as well i just. that is literally insane for the average person to hear about. again, THE CONSPIRACIES!!
when zuko eventually does take the throne there's a lot of conjecture around what zuko did while he was banished and moreso, what he did the second time he left, this time voluntarily. i think zuko's loyalty would be questioned a lot; by other world leaders who are understandably wary about the fire nation and its motivations, but also by its own people - some who believe that zuko is a traitor to his country and is trying to sabotage it since he helped end the war.
idk these are all just me rambling but it would been so interesting to explore the implications of zuko leaving the fire nation and how that would have impacted the gaang and how they interacted with others in their travels. there are so many fic where zuko joins the gaang early, but neither myself with the aus that I have written, nor many that ive read have explored this very much or at all.

see, the problem of being a non-native speaker is that, even if i know the language, i can't tell if something is wrong unless i really focus on catching my mistakes
for example, i had "writes IN ao3", instead of "writes ON ao3" on my blog for almost a YEAR, and i KNOW what the correct preposition is, it's just that it doesnt sound wrong to me unless i think about it

Adding onto my tags about wealth/class from that post yesterday, there is some really good interrogation of class in the earlier Dracula chapters -- specifically, the Jonathan trapped in the castle chapters.
Most obviously, there's Dracula's repeated scorn of the "common people." The common people are too cowardly and foolish to find the treasure; "the common people know [him], and [he is] master"; his bones (and body in this case) can't "lie amongst the common dead"; he must stand apart from them; they need a strong leader to guide them; he uses the royal "we" as if a king
He views the "common people" as lesser in every way (even as he's pretending to be his own servants)
And there's Jonathan. Jonathan, for the first couple days before he realizes he's a prisoner, doesn't complain about his unease or staying up until dawn because he "felt under obligation to meet [his] host's wishes in every way." He's not allowed to complain, because otherwise he may offend his client (until he realizes he's not allowed to complain for different yet frighteningly similar reasons)
The traits that Hawkins highlights in his letter are that Jonathan is "faithful," "discreet," and obedient in that "he will take [Dracula's] instruction in all matters." Essentially, all the traits one could want in a servant, and ones which Dracula gleefully tests as he gets Jonathan to submit to his "mastery" over and over again
(of course Jonathan agrees not from inherit obedience but an attempt to stay alive, but of all the ways one could describe Jonathan, it's still notable these are the ones that his employer chose to highlight -- the ones a client would find desirable, especially, perhaps, a noble one)
Dracula the eternal, monstrous nobility, who needs to keep conquering as he once did, who feels that it's not enough that he's preying on the people around him as the rich preying on the poor is taken from metaphor to reality, but that he must feel to be master of them, above them in every way, as well.
Unfortunately...the class criticism is bracketed by the xenophobia/antisemitism. While many core themes of the novel are xenophobic, this section may be one of the most overtly racist. We get the racist depictions Rromani and Slovaks, and the descriptions of Jonathan's travel in those first couple days are based on Stoker's research of travelogues, that were, of course, described through a racist British lens (Round About the Carpathians, mentioned in this post and another that I've having trouble finding because tumblr has an awful search function -_-)
Dracula's whole research into England and his expertise is meant to be unsettling because of the fears of reverse-colonization, that the Other will blend into ~English civilization~ and corrupt it from within. The Other will conquer the conquerors.
There's the sense that this terrible nightmare that's happening to Jonathan can only happen in a far-away place -- a place deemed Other, "this cursed land, where the devil and his children still walk with earthly feet" -- and the fears of that place of Otherness brought to England
Added to that is that, later in the novel, the only matching high class English character we get is Arthur, who is of course presented as a good and noble man, who uses his wealth only for good, helpful things, as Mina points out late in October. Even Lucy, as a sign of fading nobility to some extent, is still portrayed as the perfection of white femininity. The strongest class critique is mainly aimed at Dracula within Transylvania, while coming down lightly on class and wealth within England (though not entirely absent).
It's why the novel is both enjoyable yet frustrating (which can be said about a lot of old literature). The good comes with the bad, and both are hard to ignore.
