Silence is broken by the mechanical hum of the test table rising from the tank.

The subject gives a high, hoarse gasp as her face emerges from the frigid water into the warm air.

Shivers wrack her soaked form. The threadbare clothes they provide her with cling to her blue-gray skin.

Emmeline begins to cough up water, her convulsions so sharp and violent to her frozen-stiff body that her spine fractures.

When she finally settles, several pains set in at once. Pins and needles at the tips of her fingers and toes, pounding in her head, burning lungs, a dull ache in her lower back that grows sharper and sharper.

-gasp-

A familiar low hum fills the room. With it comes a rush of warm air from above and Emmeline cries with relief.

Every time they leave her in a little bit longer. Every time they pull her out and dry her off she heals slower and more painfully as she grows weaker and weaker.

This time it takes her nearly twenty minutes of frostbitten skin thawing, cracked bones mending, a weak pulse regaining strength, soreness subsiding.

Then, for five blissful minutes, she is warm, dry, free of pain, and so worn down that she is asleep almost instantly.

The doctors watching from above furiously type notes and adjust settings.

"That was twenty minutes. Thirty next?"

"We have that meeting soon. Let's do an hour so it's done when we get back."

The first man feigns shock. "But won't that kill her?"

His colleague rolls his eyes and presses the button. "Let's go."

At the whirring of the machine Emmeline startles awake. Her blurry vision lands on the two figures in the window turn and walk away.

No...no...

Emmeline shrieks at the first sting of icy water to her warmed, healed skin. Within seconds she is fully engulfed, and the room goes silent.
