my pov on malcolm and leandra as parents is like, they were bad parents. but i don’t think they were straight up abusive! i think they did try to be good parents but given the situation.

like imagine you’re a couple fending on your own for the first time and one of you is fresh out of a cult and has few real practical life skills because of said cult and the other is completely cut off from your family and experiencing poverty for the first time and also you’re on the run from the law and can never be entirely honest about who you are with outsiders and also also you kind of don’t know each other all that well because of the previously mentioned cult which is also a theocracy.

and then add three kids on top of that, at least one of whom is ALSO a fugitive who will be taken away from you if what she is is found out.

like i don’t think that is a situation conductive to good parenting! considering what we see from the younger hawkes i think they both were very bad parents! i think they were kind of overbearing and kind of neglectful of, and sometimes, even, lashing out at, the hawke siblings. but i do think they tried to do the best they could, even if they didn’t always succeed

For both Vaughn and Hawkes yes. They really love each other and they're willing to give it all to keep each other safe (Hawkes already lost a wing for Vaughn) Its in Hawkes nature to be very protective of the people he loves.

While for Vaughn, years of being treated like a curse and something vile made him holds the people he cares about especially tight. Especially, after Hawkes loses his wing which Vaughn still blames himself for even if it was an accident. It reminded him how easy it was to lose the little people he had and it terrifies him.
