So, it can go much worse than crochet.

Next to it is a band that I wove previously (cotton bamboo rayon blend), and while the selvedges are a mess and it would have looked different under tension, it is enough to see that this is not going like it's supposed to.
I think the issue is it's not compressing like I'd expect, because it's so rigid? But I'm not actually sure.
I'm going to have to think about how to approach the rest of this. That might be researching to see if there's a good fix, or it might be unpicking everything and using it for something else.
At least it failed quickly.

dark academia stationary tips? ideas? please? i beg of you.
Deepen Your Dive into Dark Academia Stationery:
Tumblr media
Crafting the Canvas:
Paper: Embrace the tactile – rough-edged parchment, marbled sheets, hand-dyed linen paper. Seek antique ledgers, vintage score sheets, or maps for a truly timeworn effect.
Ink: Let your words drip in history – deep emerald greens, rich burgundy, charcoal grey. Discover shimmering gold or silver for elegant annotations. For an extra flourish, explore calligraphy inks and vintage fountain pens.
Beyond the Basics:
Washi Tapes: Forget the neon, embrace botanical prints, celestial patterns, and antique library stamps. Layer them for depth, use them to seal letters, or decorate journal edges.
Stickers & Tags: Pressed leaves, dried flowers, and ephemera from library archives add a touch of natural mystery. Vintage anatomy diagrams, constellations, and old library catalog cards offer an academic flair.
Sealing Secrets: Wax seals & ribbons elevate simple letters into heirlooms. Choose deep green wax, embossed with a raven, a quill, or your own monogram. Tie with silk or hemp twine for a finishing touch.
Unleashing the Scholarly Spirit:
Journals & Notebooks: Opt for leather-bound volumes, with aged paper and ribbon bookmarks. Decorate with antique maps, pressed flowers, or handwritten quotes from your favorite poets.
Organizing Knowledge: Index cards, vintage library pockets, and antique file folders help categorize your studies. Label them with elegant script and adorn them with botanical sketches or scientific diagrams.
The Scholar's Tools: Antique brass compasses, vintage rulers, and magnifying glasses add a touch of academic ambiance to your desk.
Whispers of Antiquity:
Poetry & Letters: Handwrite in a flowing script, penning sonnets or letters to fellow scholars. Let foreign languages add a touch of mystery, or slip in quotes from forgotten classics.
Ephemera & Found Objects: Tuck pressed leaves, antique botanical prints, or ticket stubs from forgotten museums into your notebooks. Let them spark inspiration and evoke past journeys.
The Art of Storytelling: Create your own dark academia-inspired stationery. Make vintage-themed envelopes from maps, decorate boxes with constellation patterns, or craft your own wax seal stamp.
Remember, dark academia is about embracing an atmosphere. Let your creativity flow, curate your collection with intention, and transform your stationery into a portal to an enchanting world of forgotten knowledge and secret societies.

New Moon in Capricorn - January 11, 2024
This post was posted 8 days early over on my Patreon! Be sure to follow me on Patreon for free to be notified when I post new content, or when I make important announcements!
This is a successful period for career development and long-term planning. You may be feeling extra ambitious to tackle new projects, or finally gather the courage to go for the new promotion or job you’ve been looking for.
Your emotions will be moved to the backburner during this time, however. You may be feeling more guarded and there will be a breakdown of communication between your heart and your head – try not to dwell on these inner turmoils, and be wary when spending time with others who may not be understanding of this emotionally-absent period.
Your energy is best spent on patience and self-control, and investments and long-term plans. Plus, a little self-care never hurt anyone!

What does “success” mean to me?
How can I re-evaluate my finances to better suit my goals?
What is a project I’ve always wanted to start, but was too scared to? What small steps can I take to begin that project?
Spells, Charms, Rituals & More
Successful Growth Jar Spell
This spell is a lot like a sourdough starter – keep feeding it and as it grows, so will your success! This is very similar to a money bowl, but in my opinion, it’s more like an altar that you can constantly work on and change. Plus, it kinda looks like those vases from the 90s/2000s filled with neon sand art, so… that's a plus.
Materials
A large, tall jar (I'm using an old pasta jar)
Rice for abundance
Bay leaves for wishes, luck, manifestation and abundance
Coins and/or dollar bills for abundance
Ground cinnamon or cinnamon sticks for success and abundance
Pecans and/or walnuts for success
Paper
Pen or pencil
Permanent marker
Instructions
Take your rice and layer a good amount at the bottom of your jar, maybe an inch or so. This will be the “foundation” of your spell, and represents the beginnings of your success.
Next, write on a few bay leaves what the “seeds” of your success will be. For example, “time”, “energy”, or “commitment” – things that will grant you the success that you want. Bury them in the rice.
Sprinkle ground cinnamon on the rice (or, shove sticks of cinnamon into the rice). This will represent your efforts to grow your success.
Lastly, sprinkle walnuts or pecans on top. These pieces will represent the “buds” of your success; the beginnings of your rewards.
Now, as time goes on, with each accomplishment you make, write it down on a strip of paper, fold it up, and place it in the jar. With patience, the jar will continue to grow until it is overflowing with accomplishments and successes.
Walnut Charms for Prosperity
Materials
Whole walnut(s) for prosperity
Whole cloves for prosperity
Bay leaves for wishes, luck, manifestation and abundance
Rice for abundance
Super glue or twine/string
Golden metallic paint and a paintbrush (optional)
Instructions
Carefully open your walnuts and clean out the shells.
In each shell, place cloves, crumbled bay leaves, and a few grains of rice.
Charge each shell by meditating, with a candle, or however else you see fit.
Once charged, carefully superglue or tie the two halves of the shell back together.
(Optional) Paint your walnut with gold metallic paint.
Leave on your altar and carry the charm with you when you feel the need for some extra prosperity. Once you feel it has done its job, you may bury the charm in your backyard.
Other Ideas & Considerations
Paint your nails gold or green
Carry cinnamon sticks and/or bay leaves with you or in your wallet
DIY your own wind chimes to carry in good luck
Great time to begin any long-term workings you might be considering

Snowbird Ann here: x_x I have Fennel growing in my front yard. That stuff...it tastes like black licorice and it's stringy like celery. But when it goes dormant, it leaves stalks that would be great building materials. Med cat/builders could get a fresh stalk, soak it in water to make it bendy and shape it into whatever. If I remember I'll go out and snap a picture of the dormant Fennel tomorrow.
Fennel is actually suuuuuuuuper useful for dozens of reasons. It's related to parsley and has been naturalized all over the world because humans find it so useful.
The cats could use it for:
-Funerals This herb can be STINKY. This could absolutely be one of the funeral herbs that elders rub onto the deceased, especially since it's non-toxic.
-Cooking It's full of fiber meaning it can be a good supplement even for cats, if not consumed in excess. It's also got potassium, manganese, calcium... They can't taste sweet but that licorice-y flavor would come across just fine. It's actually used in sausages a lot.
-Alcohol If your Warriors drink responsibly. And know how to distill. Mead made from honey would still be easier but fennel was used for health tonics in the middle ages... and then eventually got used to make absinthe.
-Insect repellent This one's actually huge because the OTHER big bad bug buster is mint... and all mint is toxic to cats. This is a really good non-toxic insect repellent for warriors next to lavender.
-"Toothpaste" Not like, a PASTE but, a sort of... sticky mouthwash poultice. Fennel's actually super good for oral health, eliminates bad breath, and fights plaque buildup; and remember, Our Friends Mint & Co is toxic to cats. You can make it into an oil and help a warrior with a gum problem. It's especially good at fighting streptococcus, which is one of the most common infectious bacteria in wild cats.
-General medicinal purposes Helping clean eye infections is just one medicinal use, fennel is useful for all sorts of ailments. It's anti-inflammatory, it's antibacterial (but not as good as honey), can help with digestion...
Historically it's also been associated with helping to treat colic in babies and estrogen-related issues like menopause and milk production, which is actually NOT proven with modern studies... but I think the idea is just cool enough to hand wave the science away, I would use it just to have an herb for colicky kits. It's weird that colic has never shown up in canonical kits before!
But...
Building use?
Probably not. You've noticed it's stringy-- that's actually where fennel gets its name. Fennel = Foenum = Latin for Hay. It's more like hay in consistency than twine and would be too soft to build with.
For strong material, you're just gonna want plain old wood. Twigs, branches, anywhere you can find fennel you're also going to find bushes or trees that'll make better beams.
For twine? Skip the fennel entirely with its short stalks and just get some tall grass. Or, if you've got long-haired cats, they can make yarn out of shed fur if they collect enough of it. Better yet, if you've got access to flax? Then you're REALLY cooking with fire, that bad boy can be made into fabric, rope, clothing... Don't even get me STARTED on industrial hemp, you could weave reality itself out of that popstar. Paper, clothes, canvas, shampoo, lamp oil, rope, bombs, you want it? It's YOURS my friend--
Anyway
TL;DR stick to the herbal uses for fennel. You're better letting dormant fennel re-grow because it's better in the paws of your medcats than your warriors.

So I've taken up a new project.
Tumblr media
This is hemp twine (#20, I think) on an inkle loom. I've wanted to try working with the stuff, well, since I got my rigid heddle early last year. Never got around to it, warping it up with cotton or wool yarn has been a bit too intimidating most of the time, trying with hemp was a complete non-starter.
Picked up this inkle loom off craigslist, and since it's much quicker to warp, figured I'd finally give it a try.
Not expecting it to go well, it has a lot less give than normal, and I'm bad at tensioning. I probably should have read up on weaving with it.
Tumblr media
But trying to crochet the stuff didn't go too bad, so what's the worst that can happen?

Memories (a piece of a story I am writing)
The godess of subconsiusness gently picks up the memories of the boy, with soft hands that smell of lavender. She looks at them with the curious interest of someone who looks at something for the first time. Like a child that, for the first time in its life, encounters a butterfly in the field.
She looks at them from all sides and shows them to the nymphs surrounding her who, at the sight of it, shrink back, their hands over their mouths, their eyes wide open and their wings turned down sadly. She desides the boy won’t be needing these memories for the time being. Carefully she packs them in a clean leather cloth and binds it all together with some twine of braided hemp.
In his consiousness she finds a spot high enough for him so he can’t reach it, so he can’t be disturbed by the horrible content of it, and puts the package there in between the other forgotten memories, like the first time he breathed, the first time his father held him in his strong hands and the forestlike smell of his beard and those times his mother comforted him in her bed, between the hides, to protect him from the thunder in the black night.

RaR Musings #14: Spheres
As I continue to try to build out my extensive list of possible ability influences in Road and Ruin, certain spheres begin to emerge, which helps to recognize what might need a sub-resource.
In the first place, Road and Ruin operates on associations. Where other games ask that you make up the circumstances, twists, or even whole setting out of whole cloth, the aim, at least, is for Road and Ruin to appeal to each player's personal experience of popular culture, in a part-tarot, part-rorschach test. The pros of this is that mechanics will assist in players getting to experience what they've come to expect of a story from their genre, with some twists along the way, as well as fulfill any genre. The cons, of course, are if people aren't already familiar with a genre, or have any desire to recreate the tropes from one, then they won't be learning about them here except from other players.
Because Road and Ruin operates on associations, there needs to be certain tropes and recognizable themes in play. The sphere of [ANIMALS] might mean a pet dog, birds, or a tiger, or hunting; in fantasy, it might mean speaking to animals, gaining their powers, or transforming into one, or omens, and in sci-fi, it can mean alien creatures. The sphere of [ELEMENTS] means a lot more to a fantasy player than to sci-fi or the unfamiliar, but likewise, [TECHNOLOGY] can be an entire sci-fi story with very little fantasy applications.
The sphere of [COMBAT] having sub-categories, [FIREARMS], [SWORDPLAY], [MARTIAL ARTS], and [TACTICS] mean a wider variety of playstyles for players who are interested in those, but overly fixating on that sphere means an equal drop in features that don't involve combat in some way. But, if non-combat can lean on what's quickly ballooned out to 60+ proficiencies and counting, for a system where skill checks use up to two in combination, then perhaps combat does need the lion's share of "I use this special ability".
Spheres of [CRAFTING] are both unlikely to be widely used, while also extremely popular for a small niche of players who actually like that sort of thing. Such action can mean anything from specific crafting stations, to sourcing and processing high-quality materials, applying techniques, repair and upkeep, having a catalogue, and simply being able to avoid the service costs of having someone else do it, or making sure it's done right the first time. This sphere relies heavily on the 'associations' of people interested in such things already; rather than have unique recipes for everything that ever has, does, or could ever or never exist, we reduce components and projects down to properties. We don't need specific instructions on how to craft rope, just that if we need something long, flexible, and strong, we need something with the [[Strands]] property, of a certain durability. [Twining] as an action involves weaving things together, to increase durability. People can figure it out from there, twining hemp, vines, even the hair of giants or spiderweb to make ropes. It doesn't matter if it's possible or makes sense, all that matters is the players understand how to come to those conclusions.
________________
I run into the issue of cost.
I run into a very tilted problem where another, 'better' game might have universal 'Special Points', that you can use on any ability. Fireball? 1SP. Fist Flurry? 1SP. It'd allow players to pivot from their otherwise heavily-invested build, as well as be only a single resource for new players to learn, but it comes at a price.
Having multiple difference resources helps to keep divisions between spheres in a way that simply learning new abilities doesn't breach, but it also makes it harder to learn. The connective tissue between different kinds of resources is vast and sprawling, such that a player might not understand what their options actually are, but it also indicates visible connections that are easily searchable with CTRL+F. Not having universal points means the existence of a Battery to power electrical devices, without worrying about a packet of SP being sucked up by a monk looking to punch an extra ten times. In fact, those "what if" scenarios give me the benefit of design space, where "what if a monk COULD absorb the energy from a battery? That's something out of 40k or something" actually becomes a fun and unique ability combo.
I feel like I can use the mentality of a universal ability currency, and have conversions between skills, without actually having a universal currency. Such an 'apples to apples' conversion chart is a little unfortunate, because I have to make sure that there isn't a feedback loop where someone can spend 1MP to earn 3SP and 2SP to earn 1MP, but I think that's something I can chart out early and then balance for account.
