*breaks into ur askbox through a plaster wall* hi i am genuinely fascinated by how you do patterns/ornaments in your art. I don't have like, the slightest bit of patience to do those, but I'm still hella interested to know how ppl do them. Do you plan them out or is it 'fuck it we ball' type of process? Do you usually go into more symbolic meanings (like with the floral ornaments) or add whatever fits aesthetically? Also are there any particular artists that inspire you when drawing them?
("good luck getting to me i'm behind 7 firewalls" meme voice) good lucky getting to [my blog] i'm behind 7 [layers of bricks]
hiii ok let's get serious now
while it'd be easier to tell me about my #process on a case by case basis (so if you have an image/images in particular you'd like to know how i did the patterns of i could likely be more precise in my response) the Vast Majority of the time truly i am ballin. at most I might sketch out where i want Big Pieces, and where i'll fill out with smaller things However Comma there are motifs that keep coming back. and i'm sorry to tell you this. one of them is The Patience To Do So. in no order whatsoever:
floral motifs. i never go for something that Actively Looks Like A Real Flower on purpose: the language of flowers is very dependant of era and place, and a flower that means [x] in 1910s Russia might not mean the same in 1870s England.
vegetal motifs in general, so leaves, vagyuely ivy-looking stuff, stuff inspired by mushrooms & fungi, etc
animal motifs, typically associated with the characters i'm drawing. i might draw stylized birds, wings, horns, serpents/snakes, scales, etc.
eyes, mouths, wounds, or anything that looks kinda ()-like. it can also. look quite yonic depending on the context so. yeah you could say i draw those motifs.
anatomical motifs, inspired by scientific diagrams of the epidermis, of cells, of different organs and body parts, etc. i rely a lot on [this] (Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body) because you have a lot of engravings for every body part you could think of.
random motifs: spikes, spirals, dots, waves, curls, blobs, "ladders",...
i do equal parts symbol & vibes. as mentioned above i'll often fit in animals that i associate with the characters i have drawn, add more anatomical stuff depending on the characters,... but a lot of the "filler" squiggles are pure vibes. i use them to connect symbols together. also most of the characters i draw with these types of patterns are in equal parts anatomy of the body and anatomy of the vegetal so truly i'm tailoring it here.
as for artists i'm inspired by those are the two i always mention:
Ernst Haeckel especially his Kunstformen der Natur (<- link to the Gallica digitalization, but if you google search that you'll also see plenty of good images). He was mostly a biologist & his KdN is drawings he did within his research, a bunch and i mean a buuunnnnccchhh of very beautiful drawings of so many lifeforms on earth. i often reuse his drawings of hexacorallia in peterstakh artworks. those types of artworks if you see what i'm seeing.
i'm also incredibly inspired by Solange Knopf's artworks, and routinely joke that i keep being inspired by her art. i loooove how she does it very freeflowing, packed with so much details
again, i'd probably have more to say if you pointed to an image in particular, but for the most part this is it chrewly!
you must learn patience... you must learn to enjoy doing the squiggles... this is the only way... THANK YOU FOR QUASTION

I'm so glad you liked the rough draft of my take on Cannibal for your ruination au. Saw the other artist's rendition of Cannibal and was blown away, and wanted to try another approach. As someone who plays a lot of Monster Hunter, creature design is my jam. And having outward elongated horns for Cannibal gives the impression that he can, has, and will gore his enemies. But rest assured there will more details like scars, and a green underbelly and wing membranes. Haven't decided on a tail design
(2/2) Tail designs either being something of a fin like someone the others, or having a spiked tip. This boy has a body of a weapon and uses all parts as such. I guess I wanted to give him a very distinct warmonger and vicious appearance, almost like a devil, like how Caraxes is very distinct as a serpent, and Vhagar as I affectionately dub her the Swamp Hag dragon. Also with a chipped horn there's the tiniest cute thing about Cannibal that his head is usually tilted from weight displacement.
--- -- --- -- ---
I love the creativity! Having horns to gouge and rip into his enemies / prey is so extra of Cannibal but I 100% think it's an evolutionary trait that's working in his favour 😂
But describing his whole aesthetic as a 'warmonger' is spot on. You just know Cannibal would get into fights purely because he's an asshole and likes to win against other dragons.
Your concepts all sound so good! I'd love to see anything else you come up with! And the whole head-tilt thing is amazing!

What exactly is connection between Angra Mainyu/Ahriman's and Samael in Nocturne?
The connection between Samael and Ahriman is I think largely thematic and not evidence of a substantive comparative myth relation, if that's what you mean to ask. Reason associations are distinct from traditional alignments, and since the Shijima faction is represented by proper demons and fallen angels, Samael happens to occupy a place of pride among them.
To say why these are aligned with Hikawa and his pursuit of stillness in the first place would require more attention than I'm willing to invest at the moment, but it is certainly of a piece with Yosuga's more evident aesthetic/value/alignment subversion (i.e angels in favor of an anarchic, darwinian world vs. demons vying for a perfect stasis).
Tumblr media
You could also draw more tenuous connections to Ahriman as the prototypical advesary, his association with the Manichean function of the Christian 'devil' and thus the serpent in the garden, the creation of Azi Dahaka etc. as parallels to Samael, and certainly Ahriman's great curved red horns project a devil quality, but I'm not confident about the intention behind it.

name : Sabrina Inez Garcia
meaning : 'from the River Severn' 'holy' 'brave in battle'
hometown : Scarsdale, NY
family : Miguel Garcia (father), Hecate (divine mother) Katherine Garcia (stepmother), Archie Garcia (half-brother)
origin : Sabrina was born to the goddess Hecate and Miguel Garcia on 25th December. A Christmas miracle was what his family called her but it wasn't long before the pressure of raising a child alone got to him. Often Sabrina would see him come home from work completely wasted and it caused an uproar when her aunts and uncles found out she was being starved four out of seven days a week.
Sabrina encountered her first monster while returning home from elementary school, a full-grown manticore. Intrigued by the strange hybrid creature, the six-year-old stepped closer to touch it and it attacked. She was saved by her satyr protector and brought to camp half blood.
The camp was a foreign place and all she wanted was to go back home. But when Chiron successfully contacted him, Miguel was more than willing to let her stay there. Her aunt Sophia, a clearsighted mortal, insisted on Sabrina receiving a proper education and got custody of her instead.
From then on, it was back and forth between Long Island and Scarsdale every year. Despite her initial doubts about the camp, she came to love it and accepted it as her second home.
Sabrina rarely meets her dad anymore and even when she received an invitation for his wedding, she didn't care enough to show up. She heard he got rid of his addiction and turned his life around. The only time she saw him in over ten years was the day Archie was born.
Sabrina has nothing against him nor Katherine and keeps in touch with them. But her relationship with Miguel, that's one thing she's fine with leaving in the dust.
position : Vice Counselor of Heacte Cabin, Head Alchemist
weapon of choice : Metavlitôs {a bracelet enchanted to transform into whatever gun she desires by rubbing the serpent engraved on the charm}
trivia :
Sabrina is one hell of a troublemaker and gets along quite well with the Hermes Cabin. Chiron had to ban her from teaming up with the Stolls during camp activities lest they unleashed mayhem again. They swore they had nothing to do with the pest infestation in the strawberry fields!
Sabrina often helps out in the infirmary and supplies them with healing potions and whatever medicinal substance she can concoct.
Despite her petite figure (bless her, she is barely 5'5), she's known around camp for having a no-nonsense attitude when she's focused. Legend has it that she managed to scare a few Ares kids to the verge of crying when they kept interrupting her shooting class.
Sabrina can't, for the life of her, fight. Well, she can, but not hand-to-hand combat. This is one of the reasons why she chose a gun to be her primary weapon. When Hecate saw this, she gifted Sabrina the Metavlitôs.
Sabrina has a talent for painting and her dream is to have her own art gallery one day.
She adores shiny things and aesthetic knickknacks and has a hoard of them in her little storage trunk in her Cabin (a Harry Potter flair added for the sake of representation and all that shazam)
Nobody knows where she runs off to during Capture the Flag, she's just never seen. Don't tell them but she just curls up comfortably on the branches of a massive tree until the conch horn wakes her.
Sabrina's arms and legs are often convered in ancient runes because she's afraid they might fall off from the amount of running she does—both around camp and on quests. They are products of dry-erase markers.
She has two familiars—a blue and yellow Macaw named Pablo and an American Cocker Spaniel called Aspen.
Every camper adores them and Sabrina spoils them rotten with the finest toys, food and even jewelry for fun. And yeah, they can talk.
Sabrina has access to a joint bank account through which her father sends money every month. She spends almost all of it on clothes and on gifts for her friends.
Sabrina is an avid fantasy and sci-fi novel reader. She is a vernian.
She is not a morning person. Though, it's her own fault that her sleep schedule is so wacky, she stays up reading, building puzzles or trying (and miserably failing) to solve a Rubik's cube.
Sabrina's magic overflows more often than she would prefer. It's mostly when she loses her cool after a long day of touring new campers, spending hours on end overlooking sizzling cauldrons and supervising three activity divisions.
Thankfully, her siblings are there to help, as their magic resonates with each other's and they can absorb her outburst to minimize the damage.

Homestuck Dragon-Trolls
Since Ive been lacking motivation as of late Ill just go ahead and post the only 8 dragons Ive managed to finish rough draft concepts for. Will work on finishing Equius, Gamzee, Eridan, and Feferi when I have the time been doing them in order. Reminder these are mainly sketches I've been doing since I got sick, so what works in my brain might be horrible when Im feeling better.
First off: Aradia
Tumblr media
Concept is that shes a type of Kirin-esque dragon, where they're typically domesticated for wool but when they escape into the wild they seem to undergo some kind of 'transformation' and can be seen mostly at night by the glow of their energy and have been seen 'flying' by which if they walk off a cliff they remain floating in the air casually continuing to walk along a given path. Roughly they're the size of big horn sheep.
Next: Tavros
Tumblr media
Concept is somewhere between a fairy-dragon, a kirin, and an asian serpent like dragon where magic maintains flight despite small bug like wings. Also a domesticated breed of dragon, these are roughly the size of a cat and drink nectre from flowers but if threatened can still create powerful fires to act as an escape method.
Then theres: Sollux
Tumblr media
Two headed/two tailed dragons are an aesthetic and also the mix of a fairy dragon but no kirin to this one, much more reptilian legs. The fairy traits manifesting in Wasp/Bee like wings. This species has a propensity for going blind so from a young age they use electric charges and snake like tongues to help sense the world around them. Roughly id say the size of a komodo dragon, maybe a bit bigger.
Heres: Karkat
Tumblr media
I couldnt figure out how to draw his face in a way I liked, but this species of dragon is based on things like Lobsters, hermit crabs, etc. where the wings are connected to the forearms like a wyvern, and despite the hard carapace, they still prefer to live in large shells for self defense. Because of how small they are (Half the size of a cat), they make great food choices and likely humans have been keeping them as pets if not older dragons who like keeping them around for entertainment.
Next is: Nepeta
Tumblr media
Inspiration coming from Manticores, Sphinxes and griffins, this beast is still capable of burning your meat off if you offend them while similarly ripping you apart with their claws. Roughly the size of a lion, they have yet to be domesticated, and are often seen traveling with herds of more kirin-like dragons, out of a need for hunting or companionship is unclear but one has been documented attacking other predators that aim to hunt the more prey like dragons nearby.
Next up is Kanaya:
Tumblr media
how to tell I couldn't figure out what the body shape should be like at the moment. A mix of a vampire bat and moth like wings of a fairy dragon, this is a mostly nocturnal species that has been seen drinking the blood of other dragons in their sleep. Larger than a horse, this species has been known to hide from the sunlight most of the time.
You know who to expect: Terezi
Tumblr media
Maybe got a little lazy and drew a classic European dragon about the size of a small house. This beast has been known to light villages on fire for fun or out of a sense of retribution if it has been offended. They similarly have a habit of going blind as they get older but no documentation has been found on how they manage to survive when the inevitable hits. Knights who befriend this dragon have been known to complain on sniffing noises and the amount of smoke coming from their nostrils.
Finally of the ones Ive finished, tumblr woman winner in our hearts: Vriska
Tumblr media
Reptilian in nature with the tails of manticores, this species of dragon has been known to prowl shorelines feasting on the weak and vulnerable. Just as large as a house, they've been seen having an incredible healing factor despite having more fragile wings and scales than most, or maybe its just luck on their end. Though they have a fin like sail on their back and an incredible swimming ability they can not breathe underwater and use their tails to catch whatever drifts nearby.
Equius I plan on drawing like a kirin to go with the Nepeta dragon, Gamzee will be like a kirin mixed with a seal, Eridan and Feferi are what I plan on redrawing mixing elements of sharks, asian dragons, barracuda, and other aquatic predators and will be large given their status as sea serpents. Just need the motivation and to stop coughing my lungs out.

DESIGNING THE BLADE
on these days i started on trying to design the main components of my blade; such as the actual blade itself (including the cross guard), the hilt and the metal ring that sits between the hilt and bade. and with each part, trying to design them to 1:1 scale ready for moving onto other materials. in instances of the hilt and metal component i made multiple designs of my ideas do that i could see how they each compare to each other and which works the best with the other design aspects, keeping in mind the Damascus pattern along the edge of the blade.
before the designing i did some further research into a articular aspect of the myth/ legend that i am basing my hero weapon off of. at the end of this tale the cursed blade has killed seven people and so gets cast out into the sea, in which the blade turns into a dragon.
i wanted to include this part of the tale as a motif for my design, and for there to be a dragon within the design. looking regionally, at the aesthetic for what is perceived as a dragon changes in different areas of the world. in South East Asia, where the myth and blade originate from, dragons are called Naga. Naga's appearance can be anything between a half-serpent half-man beast, to a multi-headed serpent like beast, often with an odd number of heads. Naga's are commonly associated with water, and can also be a demon-spirit or a worshiper of Buddha and often there are statues of Naga's placed by shrines to protect and guard scared texts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to try make sure i got the proportions of the blade as accurate as possible i traced an image of a kris blade then created measurements for the distinctive points of the design and scaled (scale factor of x1.8) this up so that the length is the same as the design for my hero weapon:
Tumblr media
designing my blade to scale on A2:
bottom design made first, middle drawn second, top design made last; i like the proportions the most of the final design for the shape.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
found the first design to be too narrow, and wanted the width to be slightly wider. i repeated the process of tracing and scaling up a design, but with a wider blade as reference:
Tumblr media
still found this design to be slightly too small so drew out a design that i followed the same pattern in measurements as the previous designs but added a few mm on the width to draw out another new shape; i am a lot happier with this size and scale. i traced this outline onto another piece of paper to be able duplicate the shape if i want to do a number of different designs.
ended up with a design for the blade that i like. the Naga dragon follow the centre of the blade with some South East Asian influenced designs along the cross guard and to centre the dragon at t he base of the blade. this design will be duplicated for either side of the blade, with the Naga and cross guard pattern being in gold leaf?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for the design of the handle i used the measurements similarly to the blade; of using a reference to scale to a approximate shape but for this on because it is an irregular shape of the handle tried to draw roughly four profiles that i could duplicate and work on top of for the detail of a design. i did the same for the metal component. i made a total of three designs for the hilt.
1st hilt design:
a thai motif inspired design for the curve of the end of the hilt, that interweaves with the naga dragon along the side and along the top and bottom there will be a continuous line motif that follows the centre line of the hilt. i quite like this one as the design feels quite subtle, fills the space and appears as if it would be comfortable to hold for the user/owner.
Tumblr media
2nd hilt design:
have the hilt as the head of a Naga dragon as a complete reference to the myth. i like this design but it doesn't feel right in context with the blade design, as it feels too obvious and in your face especially for a cursed blade, and the ornamental horn atop the dragon doesn't appear to look comfortable to be able to hold for the user.
Tumblr media
3rd hilt design:
for this design i wanted to illustrate a Naga constricting around the handle, like a snake, with its head resting at the top of the hilt. in the empty space i added a circular water design to reference the connection between the naga and the sea. i like this design however, there is a decent amount of free space on the top of the hilt that i think makes the hilt look unbalanced in design, with all detail on the base of the hilt
Tumblr media
l like my first design the most, however i decided to explore different designs that could run along the centre because the original design doesn't fill the line that it follows as well as i would like.
exploring different possible designs; sketching them out next to each other:
1st design: feels too complex and on a small handle, difficult to get to the correct scale to not cut the design off mid way
2nd design: i like this one, its a floral design but kind of reminds me of scales, like a dragon. the design isn't too complex but fill the space of the line well, but is subtle and not too in your face. (have picked this design for centre line of my hilt)
3rd design: original design on my hilt design, doesn't feel as if it fills the space well enough
4th design: i like how these interlock with each other, but i still don't like the area of empty space between it.
Tumblr media
made a few designs for the metal component:
1st design: found it difficult to draw the design i wanted to note down (same pattern as the 3rd design above) so i think would be too difficult to carve in such a small scale
2nd design: tried to simplify the design as the part is so small, it would follow a pattern of quarters around the circle. i quite like this one (chosen this one for my design)
3rd design: tried to follow a similar design to one on an actual blade as my reference, but didn't like this design that much
Tumblr media
putting together my designs to see how they would look together:

Silver’s Guide to Submitting an Aesthetic Request:
——
As most of you will be aware, one of the main things we do here at thedragonlair is take aesthetic requests!
The idea being that people request an aesthetic for a their dragon-selves so that they have something cool/pretty to look at that represents them.
That being said; anyone is welcome to request an aesthetic.
But please read the submission guidelines below before submitting.
Tumblr media
- We will only accept aesthetic requests for DRAGONS as this is a dragonkin blog.
- If you submit a request for an aesthetic for anything other than a dragon, it will be ignored and deleted from my inbox. Not to come off as harsh but this keeps happening
- This blog caters to all dragons and dragon-like creatures. This includes but is not limited to:
Dragons, Drakes, Wyverns, Wyrms, Basilisks, Hydras, Coatls, Artic Dragons, Sea Dragons, Serpents etc. They can have:
Any number of legs
Any number of wings
Scales/skin/fur (doesn’t matter)
From today, I’ll be turning off anonymous asks, as the vast majority have always been anonymous and It’s difficult to be motivated to spend time and energy making an aesthetic for a someone who is unlikely to ever see it as I can’t tag them. That means that I will only accept aesthetic requests from actual other blogs. (No anon)
Please include as much information as possible in your request. Things like requested colour scheme, anatomy of the dragon you’re requesting for (horns/wings/eye colour etc), habitat and hobbies would help me out enormously in creating your aesthetic.
And finally, no NSFW content in my inbox please. Thanks guys 👍

african wizarding schools
*i do not speak any predominate language of africa and i am not of african descent. i tried my best with the names of the schools, but if you have any comments or questions, please ask!
-Many African Witches and Wizards are either homeschooled or attend small Wizarding Academies in their hometowns, but each region has a Wizarding School. Students from one region of Africa can attend a school in another region, but it’s not overwhelmingly common
Uagadou - Eastern Africa
Thabane al Asad - Northern Africa
Mzantsi Afrika Academy O Umlingo - Southern Africa
Roulards Academie de Magie - Western Africa
Kazadi School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - Central Africa
-all african schools teach wandless magic as the main form of magic, but you can take a course to use wands. this is mostly because wands were a european invention.
-four of the five schools are located in rural areas, away from muggle civilization, except thabane, which is located in urban casablanca, morocco
-they don’t have uniforms, just color requirements as followed:
Uagadou: Royal Blue and Red
Thabane:  Purple and Gold
Mzantsi’s: Light Blue and Indigo
Roulards: Red and Black
Kazadi’s: Green, Yellow, and Red
-all schools are required to teach both modern wizarding and traditional wizarding
-each school competes in quidditch tournaments, and roulards has the best record of the five schools
-uagadou and thabanes have the best gobstone teams in the world
-they often host other schools for holidays and enrichment trips
-uagadou has the biggest campus of any wizarding school in the world
-the five schools are all apart of the african schools of wizardry and witchcraft
-african and north american relations are some of the best in the world
-mzantsi’s is known for it’s quidditch rivalry with beauxbatons in france
-the five schools are mostly harmonious, but there is a very gentle rivalry between uagadou and and thabane
-some of the clubs available are but not limited to:
Wands, Wandmakers, and Their History(A Basic Guide to Wand using and it’s history)
Language Clubs(A Club with Teachers for 59 languages)
Gobstone Teams(Gobstone Teams for Junior, Senior, and Mixed)
-every child is available for the exchange programs, and they can have opportunities at ilvermorny and all other north american schools, hogwarts, beauxbatons, durmstrang, and other european schools, all asian schools, plus more
