teen wolf x original pinoy music, no. 1 — thiam and mundo by iv of spades

an idea that's been bouncing around my head for a while! i'm filipino (hence the opm crossover), and i think that opm should have a bigger presence in fandom spaces :D that's all <3

translation from tagalog to english via me and spotify's weird translation feature :) (it's not the best, but you can't really capture the nuances of tagalog in a single line, so i'll do my best to explain my translation edits under the cut!

disclaimer: i am not a professional tagalog to english or english to tagalog translator! i'm just bilingual :>

1. AKING SINTA — my love

sinta is a term of endearment, equivalent to love, darling, sweet, etc. aking is a possessive, like my or mine. i just took "my love" from the spotify translation, but i think darling flows better :)

2. IKAW NA ANG TAHANAN AT MUNDO — you have become my home and my world

tahanan means home, and mundo means world. gramatically, i've taken some liberties, since translating sentences like this into english is actually really difficult: it directly translates to "you are now home and world", without any possessives, but i thought adding "my" would work well in this context, even if the direct translation is beautiful as it is

3. SA PAGBALIK — when i return

here's another example where there's no subject or narrator. this directly translates to "when return", without specifying what or who returns. i've written out "when i return," even though the translation for that would be "sa aking pagbalik."

4. MANANATILI NA SA PILING MO — i will remain by your side

the direct translation is "will remain/stay with you", i just decided to take some creative liberties so it fits the context a bit better. (also thank u spotify translation)

5. MUNDO'Y MAGIGING IKAW — my world has become you

another tricky one. this one is directly "world will become you" or "you will become world" again, without any possessives or narrator. magiging is in future tense, but hey, creative liberties ! it would've been weird for me to switch the tenses in the middle of the gifset (see point 10)

6. LIMUTIN NA ANG MUNDO — forget the rest of the world

this one's gorgeous as it's direct translation: "now forget the world" which makes me go insane. to flow better in english, i modified it a little bit :D

7. NANG MAGKASAMA TAYO — when we are together

"when we are together." (direct) NO NOTES.

8. SUNOD SA BAWA'T GALAW — following every move

"following every move" (direct) this line doesn't usually have an apostrophe, but i think it makes sense :)

9. HINDI NA MALILIGAW — no more getting lost

directly: "no more getting lost" or "[you're/i'm] not getting lost [anymore]". i prefer the first translation, since it really fits in this context, but the second one is still so good i love this song so much

10. MUNDO'Y MAGIGING IKAW — my world has become you

i originally thought that the lyric went "nagiging", which is past tense, (which would make the translation "world has become you," which would've made me cry and bawl) but i decided to stick with the official lyrics just this once. even though i'm a little pissed about it

Cop Car !

Pairing : Carlos × fem!reader.

Warnings : I don’t think any apply, other than a mention of a killer.

Plot : You and Carlos had been dating for five months and now Carlos had offered to take you on a date. However, this doesn’t exactly go to plan at all. And the police know that they shouldn’t mess with you.

Pronouns used : He/him for Carlos, she/her for reader.

Note : I am not a Spanish native and I don't know any Spanish, all Spanish nicknames mentioned in this story are translated from google. If anything is wrong PLEASE let me know and I will correct it.

Info : This is inspired by this song here! Also, this fic is kinda modern and there is also no magic in encanto at the time!

Carlos watched you from the alleyway, flicking his knife open and closed, as you crouched down and laughed with the children.

“You look adorable, Juancho.” You poked the little boys nose.

Carlos headed over, his slender shadow scaring off the group of seven year olds. You cocked an eyebrow, staring at your boyfriend, “You know, you really need to stop scaring the kids.” You said, standing up.

“It isn’t my fault. If they’re used to chico de oro, that’s not my problem.” Carlos shrugged.

You had begun dating him around five months ago, on his eighteenth birthday. Nobody expected it, you were the sweet good girl and he was the town's bad boy. It was a shock to everybody.

You planted a kiss to his cheek before grabbing his hand, intertwining your fingers with his as the pair of you walked together. “So, I wanted to ask you something.” Carlos began, ignoring the stares from the townspeople.

“Okay, go on.” You nodded, glaring at the townspeople as you noticed their stares.

“Would… Uhm… Would you want to go on a date tonight?” He asked.

“With you?” You questioned.

“No, with Isabela! Of course, with me!” He responded, cocking a brow at you.

A giggle escaped your lips, “I’d love to.” You grinned, staring at him before planting a kiss to his cheek.

“Meet me at the fountain tonight, after your chores.” He smiled, planting a quick and soft kiss to your forehead before disappearing off into the shadows, leaving you standing with a soft pink tint painting your cheeks.

You met Carlos at the fountain after all of your chores were over, you folded your arms over your chest as he approached you, grabbing you by the waist and placing a quick kiss to your cheek before dragging you towards his car.

“Where are we going?” You questioned, sitting in the passenger seat as he began to drive away from the small town.

“You’ll see.” He smirked, as he drove. You quickly noticed a sign that said ‘no trespassing’ and you were currently trespassing. Your eyes widened slightly as you looked over his features, his signature smirk still stood cockily on his lips.

He soon parked the car, the pair of you climbing out as you both sat on the bonnet and began to watch the planes take off. He had brought you to an airport, to a place where you could watch the planes take off. He knew you’d always had a fascination for planes.

He thought you’d have all night, there was no need to rush… However, it wasn’t long before the sound of sirens and flashing blue lights filled your ears. Carlos threw his head back, “Man, ain’t this some shi-” Carlos groaned.

You cocked a brow, “We could always run for it, that’d make the best story!” You grinned. Carlos smiled, shaking his head slightly. He was too busy watching you going wild, to be worried about going to jail. The blue lights shone, illuminating the freedom in your eyes.

The police approached the pair of you, you eyed them. They weren’t playing at all, they were quick to slam the cuffs onto both you and Carlos. Carlos watched as you tried to talk your way out of it with the police, one looked younger and the other much older. The younger one was definitely a rookie. Your mouth kept moving, trying to sweet talk them, they didn’t fall for it but Carlos? Oh, Carlos did, big time. Hearing your sweet words would always make him fall for you over and over again.

Carlos was pushed into the car, the rookie then pushed you in, reading you your rights. “Yeah, I understand. I just have one question.” You asked, the police officer stopped at the door giving you a pointed look. “Do you have a light? I’m due a smoke any moment now.” You questioned.

Carlos eyed you, biting back his laugh, knowing that you didn’t smoke. You smiled sweetly as the officers face contorted in anger before he slammed the door. Carlos watched you as you leaned your head back against the headrest of the backseat, a smile still painted across your lips.

“I swear your dad’s gonna kill me.” Carlos groaned.

“Maybe so, but if it makes you feel any better, you won’t be the only one.” You grinned.

“That doesn’t make me feel better.” Carlos chuckled slightly, shaking his head.

“Look Carlos, I want you to know that if we do both survive tonight, I wouldn’t change one thing.” You let him know, smiling as you tried to adjust your hands in the cuffs. It was the most uncomfortable sitting position, your hands cuffed tightly behind you.

“Not even this part?” Carlos cocked a brow.

A laugh sounded in the back of your throat, “Not even this part.” You grinned.

Carlos watched you as you stared out of the window as the police conversed with one another. You were so innocent but you were stealing his heart. Carlos couldn’t help the feeling within his chest as he watched you, something felt warm and sweet; a feeling he wasn’t used to.

The older officer soon approached the car, opening the door and allowing you to go. “You’re free to go.” He spoke.

“We won’t be so easy on you next time.” The rookie officer shouted out, causing you to stop walking.

You slowly turned back, “You should know better than to threaten me, Officer...” You glanced down at his badge, “Diaz.” You snarled. “Officers like you have gone missing for less.” You let him know, turning on your heel and heading towards Carlos’ car. The pair of you climbed in.

The rookie attempted to follow you, anger crossing his every feature but was held back by his partner. “Don’t.” He spoke.

“She just threatened an officer!” Diaz argued back.

“And legally, we can’t touch those kids.” The officer let him know.

“Who the hell are they anyway, Hernandez?” Diaz questioned.

“The boy? That’s Carlos Madrigal, he’s the grandson of one of the most powerful people this side of Colombia. The Madrigal’s are the most powerful family this side of the country.” Hernandez let the younger officer know.

“And the girl?” Diaz questioned.

“You don’t recognise her?” Hernandez asked, earning a shake of the head from Diaz, “That’s (Name) Fuentes. You might recognise the name. Her father is the biggest crime boss in all of Colombia.” Hernandez told him.

“Not Sergio Fuentes?” Diaz asked, his eyes almost bugging out of his head.

Hernandez nodded, “Yeah, Sergio is her father. We can’t touch those kids, many officers have gone missing or turned up dead due to Sergio.”

“Why hasn’t he been arrested?” Diaz asked.

“Nobody’s ever been able to prove it was him. He never gets his hands dirty, but myself and every other officer this side of Colombia know that it was him. We’ve been off his radar for a while, since his wife’s death. We stay off his radar, he’ll stay off ours.” Hernandez explained, watching as the headlights from Carlos’ car disappeared from view. “Sergio Fuentes is a dangerous man, and let me tell you, his daughter is just as dangerous.”

Carlos parked the car back up in the town, a smile plastering across his lips as the pair of you climbed out. “I hope you’ve been treating my daughter tonight, young man.” You suddenly heard your fathers voice.

Carlos jumped slightly, turning to the older man, “I did, sir.” He mumbled.

“I mean, we spent most of our night in the back of a cop car, but it was fun.” You laughed.

“WHAT?!” Your father yelled, his anger making Carlos jump as he turned towards him.

“Dad! Dad!” You yelled, grabbing the man by his shoulders. Your father scared everybody in town. Everybody, that was, except you. The older man stared at you, his eyes softening slightly, “It’s fine, they let us go. Plus, it wasn’t Carlos’ fault, okay? Now, go home and think about your cholesterol.” You told him, smiling slightly.

“You sure you’re okay?” He asked.

“Positive. Now go.” You told him. He nodded, planting a soft kiss to your forehead before sending a nod to Carlos and walking away.

You turned to Carlos, grabbing his hand and beginning to walk the street with him. “That was one of the best nights of my life.” You grinned, swinging your joined hands back and forth, “Watching the planes, getting arrested, messing with the cops…” You grinned.

“Falling in love in the back of a cop car.” Carlos mumbled, instantly stopping you in your tracks. Freezing.

Carlos was yanked back, almost dislocating his arm in the process as he turned to you, his eyes immediately widened as he saw the unreadable expression on your face and quickly realised what he’d said. You’d never once told each other you loved one another, in your five months of dating. “(Name), I’m so sorry. So, so sorry. I didn’t… I’m not… I-” he stuttered along his words before you lunged forward, throwing your arms around the taller boy.

He stumbled back slightly, quickly regaining his balance once again before wrapping his arms around your torso, “I’m in love with you too.” You smiled into his neck, running your fingers through his curls as you did.

Carlos stared down at you, a smile making its way onto his features as he leaned forward and planted a chapped kiss to your lips, “You’re my forever girl, (Name).” He let you know pulling away.

You grinned, dragging him along the street as you did, “And just think, if I’m not, we’ll always have the cop car.”

Carlos stopped, yanking you back into him so that your body collided with his, kissing you roughly on the lips, his hands gripped your waist so tight that they were bound to leave bruises,

“Don’t ever say that again, not even as a joke.” He snarled.

DOYOUNG ALBUM THOUGHTS

ok welcome to my album review rant today we're reviewing doyoung's album. it's a quite lengthy album too. tbh surprised at the amount of songs i actually enjoyed because ballards are usually a hit or miss for me, because i don't like hearing just straight vocals.

not going to review every song on the album bc i tuned out some of them... 😭

little light

upon first listen, i lowkey almost tuned it out, i'm sorry... but second time listening to it, since it is the title track, i'm paying more attention to it. the song is very j-pop coded?? in my opinion, the ballad-rock kinda vibe does fit doyoung and this was what i expected, but a teeny tiny part of me was hoping for a little bit more sm core style of music, with the experimental stuff, but this works too. havent watched the mv yet but i'll check it out soon, maybe look up the lyrics translation, cause songs have more meaning when you understand the lyrics too.

from little wave

tell me why it's giving mario kart... imagine listening to this while driving on rainbow road damn. no but this is such a car cruising driving song, and i pretty much liked it immediately upon first listen. the chorus is SO GOOD??? like doyoungs vocals shine on the whole album cause he's that talented but this one really demonstrates it i think. you can disagree with me lmfao idc. it's kinda giving 80s love ballad, and that's such a beautiful vibe of music i really like it a lot...

time machine

lowkey was a surprise to see mark and taeyeon featured on the album, but i actually really like this one. the vocals hard carried obviously, but mark + doyoung combo really hits hard lowkey they should do more stuff like this together. i'm a sucker for male-female vocal duets, so this one was so cute and sweet. i know why mark considers himself an "ARTIST" not a rapper lmfao. (also im waiting for mark's solo album...... SM PLEASE)

THIS IS THE SONG I WILL BE REPLAYING OVER AND OVER THIS MONTH I THINK. hello it's so good why wasn't this the title track? it reminds me of "i don't think that i like her anymore" by charlie puth and that song hits hard. also the vibes are immaculate. seems way more sm core than ballad so obviously i prefer this lmfao... love the little harpsicord instrumental too that was so neat. sm pick ur title tracks better thanks.

rest

i got more appreciative of the song after the chorus came on, but it gives like jpop vibes?? jpop really has that hard metal/rock aspect, and this album has quite a few songs like that. all in all, this wasn't really a favorite favorite, but it definitely stood out to me because it wasn't a ballad lmfaooo. didn't add this one to my playlist but i do think it's pretty good.

dallas love field

this is so country coded guys...... and guess who actually listens to country? me anyways neat cause it's called dallas love field... but regardless i quite enjoyed this a lot, and seeing the country core vibes radiate off of this... like damn im gonna make doyoung cowboy edits soon just watch. (for legal reasons thats a joke im a doyoung stan don't come for me) the only weird part is the bridge, with all the voices chiming in, but other than that i like the phillips phillips vibes that remind me of my 2010s era.

Maverick drummed his long fingers against the bar top, the soft thuds echoing gently in the empty bar. The pilot had come early to visit his good friend Penny, seeking friendly advice on his upcoming date with you. He was currently waiting on the barmaid to return through the kitchen doors, his eyes anxiously darting between the double swing doors and the hard, wooden top beneath his fidgeting fingers. Impatiently, he blew out a short breath of air through his mouth, quickly glancing at the digital watch that rested on his right wrist.

"Need to be somewhere, Pete?" Penny's amused voice called out from behind him, making the older pilot jump in his seat. A grin reached his lips as he chuckled at her question, turning to face the woman in question.

"Sorry," He sighed. "It's.. it's just been a long time." Maverick shrugged, his tongue coming to poke at the inside of his bottom lip in mild frustration. Penny couldn't help the smirk that came to rest on her lips as she strutted behind the bar, placing her palms down on the top of it, leaning against it.

"Pete, I've known you long enough and I know you well enough to know that you shouldn't be fretting over a first date. You must've had what, like... a million of them?" Penny teased, a quiet laugh leaving her lips. Maverick joined her in laughing and let his head fall back as he sighed.

He shook his head and swallowed. "I know, but, Y/N... they're different." Maverick's brows knotted together, shrugging. In all honesty, he was nervous - a complete and utter wreck. He had no idea where to take you or what to do. The man was desperate for it to be the best date you've been on - because that's what you deserved. The last time he really went on a first date was definitely more than a few years ago, so he wasn't really up to date with what the current... 'trends' were.

"Is it because... they're younger?" Penny quietly asked, her curious eyes trained on the experienced pilot that sat anxiously in front of her. She knew he was worrying about making a good first impression with you, and she also knew how he felt about you. It wasn't anything like his previous flames. Maverick didn't answer her, fearful of what she might think. "Alright," Penny smiled kindly, her straight and white teeth poking out from beneath her pink lips. "What do they love to do? Or what's one of their favourite things?" She questioned and cocked her head at the pilot as he cast his gaze downwards in an attempt to rattle his brain for an answer.

"They love sunrises and sunsets." He replied, a faint smile crossing his features as he reminisced on a warm summer morning where you had woken up extra early to watch the sun rise and called him, eager to make sure he had also witnessed it at the same time.

a month ago

Your phone buzzed to life, the theme song to The Big Bang Theory blaring out into your bedroom. With a heavy groan, you flung your hand down onto your bedside table, half-asleep, your fingers fumbling against your phone screen in a weak attempt to silence the headache inducing music. Despite it being your favourite show, the theme song soon got old and it made you want to get up - hence why you had made it your alarm clock sound.

You raised your phone to your eyes, squinting at the bright screen as you glanced away for a moment, giving yourself time to adjust to the sudden change in lighting. Five fifty-two in the morning. Rubbing the sleep out of your eyes with heavy hands, you swiftly slipped out of your dishevelled bed; the cold, brisk morning air hugging your half-dressed figure. A brief shiver plagued your body and you turned around quickly, grabbing the duvet and cocooning yourself within it like a caterpillar. You rushed to your bedroom window, a goofy smile reaching your lips as you eagerly ripped open the curtains, eyes falling on the red and orange hue that was slowly growing over the horizon.

"Mav," You mumbled to yourself, reaching to the side of your now-naked bed for your phone. Feeling the cool, glass material against your fingertips you pulled it close to you, opening it quickly. You scrolled through your contacts before you found his, and dialled it, your smile widening.

The shrill trill of Maverick's phone rang out in his bedroom and he stirred awake, a frustrated groan reverberating from his bare chest. "Who.. the fu.." He grumbled, clumsily turning over in his bed as he grabbed his phone with an exasperated huff. This better be important, he thought. "Hello?" He answered with a husky voice.

"Mav?" Your sweet voice squeaked quietly, and Maverick felt his previous frustration melt away instantly. A content smile spread across his cheeks.

"Hey, Y/N, everything okay?" Maverick asked, quickly checking the time. Five fifty-six in the morning. His brows furrowed and his concern grew slightly.

"Yes," You bit down on your lip, nibbling anxiously. "Go and look out your window." You quickly said, earning a confused grunt from the man on the other end of the line. "Mav, just do it." You laughed.

"Alright." He sighed, unable to hide the amused smile playing on his lips. The older pilot stood up slowly, a hand coming up to rub his face to try and wake himself up a bit more. He pulled open his curtains, the bright morning blinding him momentarily. "What am I looking at?" Maverick asked, quite obviously confused. He expected you to be standing there with a boombox like John Cusack in the film Say Anything, but instead he was only greeted with nothing.

"The sunrise, isn't it beautiful?" You gushed, letting your head rest against your fisted hand, which was leaning against the windowsill. Maverick, still being half-asleep, stared confusedly before he realised what you were talking about. His gaze lifted to the coral sky, watching the clouds part like the Red Sea as the sun gradually rose from it's resting place, below the horizon.

"Oh, yeah, it's stunning, Y/N," Maverick agreed, his heart feeling full. He had just realised that you had called him so he could enjoy the beautiful sunrise with you, and it made him ecstatic. "I've seen something better, though." He admitted, a gentle laugh escaping his grinning mouth.

"Really?" You asked obliviously.

"Yeah, you." He replied smoothly, making you blush. You let out a shy giggle at his words.

"That was cheesy, Mav."

"You need some cheesiness in your life, otherwise it's boring, trust me." He said, still staring out at the rising sun. He hoped you were doing the same.

Your lips had twisted into another bashful smile. "If you're the one saying it, then I think I can tolerate it." You giggled.

"Pete?" Penny called out to her old friend, an amused grin on her lips.

"What?" Maverick blinked.

"I said why don't you take them to see the sunrise or sunset in your plane?" She laughed, clearly amused by the fact that the older pilot had just totally and completely zoned out by thinking about you. Maybe you were special after all.

"Oh yeah, that's a great idea, Pen." He was pleased at Penny's suggestion - for one it included flying, and two, it involved flying with you. "You think they'd like that?" Maverick asked, just needing a little bit more reassurance.

"Definitely. They're always beaming whenever they talk about you flying. I think Y/N'd love it." Penny grinned, tapping the bar top with her palm as if she was securing the deal. Maverick thought it over for a moment, his gaze falling to his fidgeting fingers.

"Alright, I'll give it go." He shrugged, standing up from his seat. "Thanks again, Penny. I'll let you know how it goes." Maverick threw the barmaid a grateful smile, and she returned it, waving him off.

Right Down The Line by Gerry Rafferty was playing out in Maverick's hangar as he was making some last-minute adjustments to his plane before you arrived. "You know I need your love," He mumbled to himself, his foot tapping rhythmically against the concrete floor. "You've got that hold over me." He quietly sang to himself as his skilful fingers worked in the engine of his P-51 Mustang.

"Long as I got your love, you know that I'll never leave." You sang back, poking your head over the wing of the 1945 plane, and Maverick almost lost his footing from your sudden presence. The man stumbled backwards as he sucked in a sharp breath. "Sorry," You giggled as you watched his shocked face twist back into a happy smile.

"Jesus," He chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "Don't worry about it, I'll get you back once we're in the sky." Maverick teased with a wink as he stepped forwards again, finishing up on the engine.

"Once we're where?" You repeated, utterly surprised.

"In the sky." He said, grinning. You couldn't hide your excitement.

Your mouth fell agape, eyes lighting up with elation. "You're telling me, that I, Y/N L/N, get to fly with the Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell?" You gasped quietly, glancing between the old model plane and it's owner.

"I suppose so, yeah," He laughed lightly at your reaction and he couldn't disguise the happiness that was currently shooting through his body. Maverick was thrilled that you had a positive reaction to his suggestion - deep down he was worried that you'd be terrified and you'd refuse to fly with him. "Have you ever been in a plane before?" Maverick asked, honestly a little curious and nervous.

"Um," You swallowed. "Once or twice, but commercially, not like this." A nervous giggle escaped you and it warmed Maverick's heart.

"I think you'll love it."

You and Maverick spoke for a little while, and he was even kind enough to teach you a little about his P-51 Mustang, which you were - of course - delighted to listen to. The two of you now sat inside his plane as he taxied it to the runway, and you felt your heart begin to race at the anticipation. "Ready?" You heard Maverick call from in front of you, the reflection of his grinning face mirrored in the acrylic canopy. An eager smile reached your lips as your hands flew up to adjust the headset atop your head that he had given you.

"Yes!" You replied back, voice full of enthusiasm. Maverick smiled to himself as he pushed the throttle forwards, the plane beginning to race towards the end of the runway. As it caught enough speed, Maverick pulled back on the centre stick, the plane beginning to lift off from the ground. You sucked in a breath as you felt your stomach drop slightly from the sudden change in altitude.

"Talk to me, Y/N," Maverick said from the front seat with a small smile on his lips. You were absolutely stunned by how gorgeous the world looks from up here, that you almost didn't hear him.

"Wow," You breathed out, pressing your hands against the canopy like a child at a candy shop. "It's beautiful up here!" You gushed, eyes darting all over the Earth below you. Bright, luscious green trees dotted the ground, sandwiched between small and big white houses, the red roofs creating a stark contrast.

"Yeah, it really is." Maverick smiled, his hand coming up to push his aviators back up onto the bridge of his nose. He angled the plane at a sharp, almost vertical slant, and you squeaked at the instantaneous action.

"Mav!" You laughed, squeezing your eyes shut, your hands flying up to grab a hold of the headset that was slipping off of you.

"I told you I'd get you back," He laughed at you, returning the plane to a horizontal position. As you reopened your eyes, slowly, the sky was painted a beautiful shade of peach and pink, with a mix of lavender smothered above it. "You seen it yet?" He asked quietly, looking out of the window to admire the natural phenomenon.

"Holy shit..." You breathed out as your eyes widened like a doe, staring at the breath-taking sunset taking place in front of you. Maverick grinned at your reaction, holding back the happy laugh that was scratching at his throat to escape him. "Mav, this is beautiful!" You gushed, mouth falling agape as he turned the plane once more, and another squeak left your lips. "Mav!" You exclaimed.

"I'll stop now, I promise." His chest bounced from the hearty laugh that escaped him, his cheeks beginning to feel a little sore from the constant grin stuck on his face.

Maverick had landed the plane and was currently taxiing it into the hangar. As he parked the plane in it's spot, he shut off the engine and glanced behind his shoulder to look at you, who currently had the world's biggest smile on your face. "We have to do that again, please!" You demanded, your smile growing into a toothy grin. Maverick chuckled at your enthusiasm, and he nodded at you.

"Of course." Maverick assured you, his hands clicking open the canopy with a soft thud. He climbed out onto the wing, shuffling the front seat forwards so you could slip out of it as well. As you crawled forwards and out of the cockpit, he offered you a hand and you gratefully accepted it, gripping it tightly. If anything, you were afraid you'd slip and fall off of the wing of the plane. "Careful," He mumbled, watching your feet. You felt your cheeks burn as you stared at his face, a little awe-struck if you were honest with yourself.

"Thanks," You choked out as Maverick kept your hand in his, his feet stepping back to the edge of the wing. As he let go of your hand for a split second, he hopped down and held out both of his hands this time to encourage you to jump down. "Please don't drop me." You giggled nervously as you bent down to plop your bum on the wing, legs dangling off of it.

"I've got you, I promise." Maverick assured you, a kind smile reaching his lips. You blushed at his handsome face, biting down on the inside of your lip as he moved toward you, his hands landing on your waist. "One, two, three!" He counted, slipping you off of the wing on the last number, his grip tightening around your waist as he pulled you flush against his body.

"Thank you," You said quietly, utterly breathless at the close proximity between the two of you. You let your eyes fall to his parted lips, quickly flicking back up to meet his curious blue eyes. Maverick noticed your timidity and he smiled at you, releasing you gently from his grasp. You felt sad at the loss of contact from him, but you pushed the feeling aside, smiling back at Maverick. As much as you wanted to kiss the man in that very moment, you didn't want to be too forward.

"I hope you're hungry." Maverick suddenly said with a shy smile, and you quickly frowned, quite obviously confused at his words. Before you could ask what he meant, he lead you round the corner of the plane, your surprised eyes falling onto a candlelit dinner set up on a makeshift table.

"Oh my gosh," You gasped. He had placed a classic red and white gingham cloth atop the table and adorned it with white china plates; a simple, long and slender white candle sat lit in between the two dishes. Steam billowed up from the spaghetti that was neatly arranged in a spiral-like fashion with a piece of basil placed nimbly atop of the Italian staple food. "Oh, Mav, this is just..." You trailed off with a shaky voice, feeling a little emotional at the set up. Nobody had ever gone to these lengths before for a first date, and you were definitely feeling special. Turning your body toward him, you felt tears begin to bubble against your waterline. Maverick's once-smiling face fell at your sad one, and he rushed to you, his hand coming up to cup your cheek. A small smile instantly warmed your face as he touched you.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know-" He shook his head softly as he watched a tear spill from your glossy eyes. Oh god, he did too much.

"No, Mav, I love it. It's just- no one has ever done this for me before." You laughed through your tears, a weak grin growing on your lips. His sad look faded and he smiled at you, his large hands sliding from your now-tear-stained cheek to your hands, the soft pad of his thumbs caressing the back of your palms gently. "Thank you so much." You whispered, unable to meet his eyes. God, what a mess you were.

"You're welcome, Y/N, I just wanted our first date to be special... I was worried that you'd be disappointed." He admitted with a sheepish smile, leading you to the table. You shook your head at him, completely in shock that he thought such a thing. How could you be disappointed to go on a date with the 'Maverick'?

"You're joking, right, Mav?" A soft, incredulous laugh left your lips and he stared at you, obviously serious. "Well, first, I would never be disappointed to go on a date with you. If the date was to sit in a field and stare at each other, I'd be thrilled." You giggled at him. "And second, I'm honoured to have even been offered an opportunity like this." You teased him as you sat down opposite him, the soft, amber glow of the candle illuminating his smiling face. "Thirdly, how the hell did you set this up when you've been flying a plane with me?"

"A magician never reveals his secrets." He replied cryptically, unable to hide the smirk that was picking at the corners of his lips. You rolled your eyes at him with a bashful smile, your hand reaching forward to grasp the glass of wine that sat to the right of your plate of spaghetti.

"A pilot and a comedian, boy am I lucky." You joked, grinning as you took sip of the refreshing red vino; a satisfied hum leaving your pursed lips as you savoured the sweet taste. "Thank you again Mav, for all of this, it was a dream come true, honestly." You said with a soft voice, gazing at the man in question. He shook his head at your words.

"It's my pleasure, Y/N, I wanted to make you feel special." Maverick stared at you with a besotted smile.

"Well, you definitely did just that!" You laughed, feeling the tears return to your eyes.

Ah, Precure dance endings. A series staple. Whether you consider the First dance ED to be "You make me happy" or "Ganbalance de dance" or even the very first "Get You! Love Love?!" the point is they've been around for a while. Generally speaking nothing but a simple fun time, but rarely has had anything to do with the show proper. Nothing wrong with that of course, but the very first Precure ED was a bit more than that.

Futari wa, as opposed to every other season, only has the 1 ending. Sure, it changes visually halfway through to accommodate Pollun and the new villain team, but that's it. (Which is more than the OP which doesn't change at all, which is also unusual). But I think people often miss the relevance of the song in between all the less relevant eds, and the iconicness that is the OP.

But the ED is also iconic and a crucial piece of the Futari wa Purikyua experience.

Episode 45, the last episode before shit hits the fan, features this song heavily. This song isn't really my favorite ed, and the episode isn't a particular favorite of mine (Futari wa has so many good episodes), but it utilizes the ed effectively, and the song that you've been listening to all this time hits harder.

Nagisa immediately falls in love with the song. The song speaks to her looking at the lyrics of course its no surprise. But it's not just "song that Nagisa would like". Though I would be remiss if I did not mention the inclusion of sweets in the lyrics. Nagisa loves chocolate. It's the go to simple important part of life for her.

They have the girls sing it. Sung by a chorus, not just Nagisa and Honoka (but they do get solos), but the whole class, many of whom appear in the ED. Because of Futari wa's small main cast the side characters hold a more important role than they do in many future series, so these are characters we know, even if just from an episode. There's a weight to the music being diegetic.

Of course the episode ends sweetly, with Nagisa, Honoka, and the fairies, singing their heart out with the rest of their class. But for a moment that wasn't a guarantee. Nagisa and Honoka being unable to sing with their class highlights the toll that this fight has taken on their normal school lives. They have to fight against someone who fully intends to kill them, and then destroy their loved ones, alone while every one else is.

Made all the more poignant by the subject matter of the song.

First of all, the title "Get you! Love Love!" is in English, and a bit nonsensical in English. But "Love Love" in Japanese, means more "lovely-dovey". It's VERY much so in your face romantic. A word used to describe Mepple and Mipple. The song is about the joy of teenage romance. While I don't really want to call it frivolous, next to world saving it doesn't hold the same weight.

Now, I recognize that may seem counter to my point that the song is important to Futari wa. I mean there's no canon romantic relationship. Closest is Nagisa's crush that she never actually confesses to. But putting aside all of Futari wa's romance elements (which is an entirely different discussion), the lyrics are still very relevant to Futari wa.

The Opening holds the iconic line "even wearing school uniforms we're unbelievably tough" and features scenes of them fighting evil in their school uniforms. The opening is an ode to how badass they are in all aspects of their life.

But the ending is the other side of the coin. It tells us how frustrated they are with the villains encroaching on their everyday life. While I don't speak Japanese, and have seen it translated a couple of ways, the reoccurring "datte yatte ran'nai jan", is either "because you can't make me do this", or "because I can't do this". IDK which is right, but either way, this is in regards to fighting, stress, and trouble, which stands in stark contrast to the opening which is very much so about how much they can and do fight. "For the sake of the earth, for the sake of everyone That's fine but isn't there something that you're forgetting?! Now!" They aren't even being subtle about the Pretty Cure part about the girls lives in the song. How much that they don't want to do it. "My heart is pounding and throbbing like a dreaming teenager An original daily life is something I won't get rid of" The lines of Nagisa and Honoka's solo. The most thematically important lines in the whole song imo. While the importance of the everyday is important in most Precure seasons, it is especially emphasized with Futari wa. The main theme of the story is about how precious day to day things are, and how unfair it is for the girls to have to fight for that.

Because ultimately that is what Futari wa Pretty Cure is about more than anything. I think it's important to view Futari wa Pretty Cure through the lens of a slice of life first. It's tone a lot of the time, focusing on poor grades and unfinished homework, lacrosse, errands, sleepovers and family. A relatively grounded slice of life from the perspective of magical girls. The value of the normal events highlighted by the desperation Nagisa and Honoka have fighting to defend them. The ED highlights it by focusing on the more "frivolous" aspects of the girls lives.

The visuals of the ED are pretty simple, but effective. They showcase the different circles the girls interact with. Their families, their classmates, their clubs and of course the villains. Because of Futari wa's focus on their community, the presence of these characters in the ED is deserved. A fun lighthearted focus on their day to day lives to contrast the OP.

Also, I'd like to point out the ED visuals humanizing the villains. While Futari wa's villains are easily among some of the franchises worst, having the unforgivable flaw of being forgettable, the show doesn't do a completely terrible job of humanizing them. And the ED contributes to that. The dancing of the villains, just being the goofy people that some of them are when not, trying to destroy the world. While I wouldn't call the behavior canonical, it really isn't off base for characters like Gekidrago and Regine. The villains, for all that they are generic, are primarily motivated by their desire to continue existing: the same motivation that drives the Cures. (Gotta love their goofy dance).

Also a guy screams at the end of it. If I have to hear it now so do you.

#also I think the ed was used as an instrumental insert once but I do not remember the episode and can't find proof #futari wa precure #precure #I do have thoughts on Fujipi's presence in the show #that ties into the sheer amount of romantic motifs in this series including the ed #Those really do get glossed over #I mean its even more of a motif than fruit is in fresh #i rewatched futari wa & max heart recently if that wasn't evident

Anime Year in Review

Last year I made a silly post ranking the three shows I happened to watch. This year, I got way more into anime (and manga), so let's do it properly this time

Revue Starlight* - Easy top star spot. This anime was flawless. I watched it twice this year and will be watching it again. The story, the animation, the music were all impeccable. The music, oh my god; I listen to the soundtrack every day. Some of my other favorites on this list I'd only recommend based on your personal tastes, but this show should be watched by everyone. (The sequel and spin-offs, not so much. They all use the revues in a way that completely undermines the premise of the main series)

Heavenly Delusion - So fucking good. Second on this list, but I think it's the best show that came out this year. Deeply traumatic, but in such a satisfying way. The horror elements were so brutal and so well done, and I love that the man-eating monsters were the least gruesome part of the show. If it wasn't for the stinker of the ice monster episode, I think this could've been my favorite anime

Call of the Night* - Adored this show. Yes it's a celebration of the hedonism of vampires, but it's so earnest and down-to-earth with it that it feels so good to watch that I did it twice (sub and dub). I also got into the manga, which is sadly wrapping up next month, but hopefully that prompts an announcement about season 2

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - Super chill show, which is a great way to wind down the week. It's such a cool concept too, following the adventurer after the adventure is over. It's just a reflection on life and I love it

The Witch from Mercury (cour 2) - Given that I run a sideblog just for this show, it might be surprising that it's so low on my list, but the second cour was a lot weaker than the first. Not nearly enough of Suletta and Miorine interacting, and way too much chaff following Guel's B-plot. I've said it before, but I think the worst part of this Gundam show is that it's a Gundam show. A+ epilogue though, and Suletta is still my favorite character this year

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off - I enjoyed the original comic and the live action movie. I didn't realize this new adaption was really a sequel, but it ended up being a great way to bring the old story to the modern decade. (Two decades later isn't much, but it was very of-its-time)

Spy x Family (cour 2) - Very fun show. Following several viewpoint characters means the individual episodes might be hit-or-miss (as much as I love Anya, the episodes at the school are relatively bland), but the overall package was sweet and enjoyable

Nimona - Another comic I really enjoyed. The movie was strong, although it cut a lot of parts out that I thought were important to the original story

The Orbital Children - Directed by the same person who directed one of my long-time favorites (Dennou Coil), the first two acts of this really felt like a modern update. Stunning visuals, great sci-fi, thrilling adventure. Went totally off the deep in the third act, though

Joshiraku* - As the characters pointed out, adapting a manga that takes entirely inside the green room of a stand-up comedy club is an odd choice. It was off-the-charts hilarious, though. Considering some of the scripts were entirely pun-based, it must've been an immense amount of work to translate, but they absolutely pulled it off

Oshi no Ko - The only reason I watched this show was because the OP was such a banger. (Several fantastic anime songs by YOASOBI this year, and Idol is easily my favorite.) The first, feature-length episode was incredible and I literally cried at the end. If it was a stand-alone movie, it would be a couple of spots higher on this list. The rest of the show was fine, but not really what I was here for. I'll probably still watch season 2 though

Arknights: Prelude to Dawn* - I bounced off the gacha game immediately, but the worldbuilding and character designs seemed cool, so I wanted to give the anime adaptation a chance. The plot was very thin but serviceable enough. At least it looked nice to watch.

The Magical Revolution of ... - Not typing that whole thing out. It was a cute show. The yuri stuff was nice, but I wish for a show about a magical inventor, there was a non-zero amount of magical inventing shown on screen

A lot of shows I really loved this year. Looking forward to next year, the anime I'm most hyped for is obviously Dungeon Meshi. It looks like it's going to be incredible. The second season of Arcane is also scheduled to come out late next year, which is also very exciting. Technically Frieren has a second cour in January, but they're airing both cours as basically a single 24-episode season, so that doesn't really count

For older shows I mean to catch up on, YouTube has recced me clips of probably every single joke from K-On!, and it's really grown on me. Definitely going to watch that soon. I'm also in the mood to watch Bocchi the Rock! again. I should also make myself watch the first couple episodes of PMMM. Nothing I've seen on Tumblr has grabbed me for that one, but it's right in the middle of some of the other shows I was gushing about here and it would be dumb not to try it

K-dramas to brighten your day:

Shopping King Louie (romcom): Ridiculously fun and lighthearted romp following a spoiled and useless chaebol with amnesia who is being taken care of by a country bumpkin in the city. Very low stakes, super adorable couple, and as many tropes as you can fit in your bag, this one is one of my favorites to recommend.

Extraordinary You/ A Day Found By Chance (fantasy/romance): This magical k-drama has my heart. It plays with all of the predictable tropes and then just goes crazy! While not perfect towards the end, I give this show bonus points for being super creative AND inspiring me to read a LOT of fan fic. I think about this drama more than any other.

Soundtrack #1: (romance) A short drama about two friends. One of them is helping the other write a love song (while also being in love with her). It’s cute!

Hit The Spot: rom/com-ish: Just a heads up this is legit rated-r and has graphic sex scenes. I don't usually go for that (and actually the scenes are pretty funny to me personally - the first episode starts that way but I swear you can just skip those scenes) but the actual drama was soooo good (and maybe sponsored by a sex toy company?) Hani delivers (i love her so much) and the sex positive messaging and just two ladies getting what they need?? So funny and so fun!! But take care if this isn't for you.

Run On: (rom com) This show follows four people in their daily lives: An athletic, a translator, a CEO and an artist. Soft soft couples!! Y'all know I love this slice of life rom com for so many reasons, but you might not know that Kang Tae Oh’s character (the painter) is like one of my dream boys. BLORBO FROM MY SHOWS.

Have a Nice Dessert (another cute web drama): If you’re looking for low angst and a super soft boy, this is your drama!! It’s a web drama (youtube) about a girl who loves photographing desserts and the boy who likes her. Like all web dramas, it’s short, and there’s really no time for angst and breakups :)

The Best Hit / Hit The Top (romcom): A famous 90′s boyband dude travels into the future and meets up with his family and friends in this really cute drama featuring Yoon Shi Yoon. I LOVE Yoon Shi Yoon in pretty much everything but this role was made for him - he is hilarious. It’s a slice of life but features the k-pop music industry so the setting is unique.

Into The Ring (workplace/romcom): The perfect slice-of-life rom com! Goo Se Ra has trouble holding down a job due to her passionate personality so after she loses her latest job working for the ML, she decides to run for a small government office position because it pays a salary. Literally she does it for the money which is just *chef’s kiss.* The show is about her dealing with local politics and it’s SO FUNNY and smart and the OTP is the best!

Eulachacha Waikiki / Laughter In Waikiki: (ridiculous comedy) I hope you’re ready for a crazy amount of unlikely situations and nutty hijinks because this show is probably one the most silly ones I’ve ever watched. It follows a group of friends who own a hostel so it’s a slice of life drama. At certain points I was like “this is TOO silly” but I’m glad I stuck with it cause it was so hilarious. Plus, the baby is a star!

Light On Me (web drama bl): I absolutely adored this simple and sweet drama! One of my favorite korean BLs EVER! Because it’s longer than the average Korean BL, it actually has: *cues triumphant music* Character development!

Fight for My Way (romcom) I love this drama! The couple is one of my OTPs and it’s really funny and a mostly lighthearted story of a group of friends. It’s down to earth and adorable - I’ve never had anyone complain about this one!

Wok of Love: (romcom) Despite the fact that the show was shortened by two episodes because of sports, this drama is a funny and quirky show worth watching. Many people dropped it because it was SO crazy for the first couple of episodes (it has a talking horse people!), but it does settle into a really sweet and fun story about a chef, a gangster and a rich girl and her family. If you love food, this show is for YOU!

Splash Splash Love: (short drama) Featuring a girl struggling with her studies and magically ends up in an ancient land working for a king! It’s awesome!

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo: Super cute and fluffy drama featuring a female weightlifter lacking confidence, and a popular and good looking swimmer. Romance & great friendships!

Top Management: Adorable mini drama about a girl who can see the future and becomes the rookie manager for a kpop band. Fun and easy (plus they seem to be setting it up for another season…)

***J-drama rec*** Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!: (romance, fluff, represenation!) If you’re used to k-dramas were everything could go wrong at any time, you’re in for a real treat! Cherry Magic is my absolute favorite drama of last year and this year combined (even with a silly name like it has!) - It’s the ONLY show I’ve ever given a 10/10 rating to. An introverted guy finds out a seemingly popular and confident co-worker has a crush on him. This drama is so so soft, so so sweet and it has not one but TWO ace characters and a lot of gay panic! I’ve rewatched it recently and smiled the ENTIRE time. Plus there’s a valentines day special that’s really fun.

Together they create something beautiful, because we all know that the city of Paris has a different energy when the sun goes down. The name of the fragrance also seems very evocative to me: Phantom. I'm still trying to guess what it can mean!"

What does seem to be clear is that Let's Dance, David Bowie's song that serves as a leitmotif for the entire campaign, "should be considered one of the best in history. It would have to be on all the lists! During the shooting we didn't stop listening to it in a loop, so part of that energy is present in the images."

A familiar face

Since Stranger Things was placed in our lives seven years ago, Heaton experienced a transformation overnight. Suddenly, the young interpreter was a celebrity who, due to his unmistakable features, was going to be very difficult to go unnoticed. How have you lived through that whole process? "I think I have a very good relationship with the fans. I especially notice it when I'm traveling, and you have to keep in mind that, due to my work, I travel a lot to different parts of the world. I have been to Spain many times, for example, but the truth is that most of the time I spend it between the United States and my native country, England."

I am aware," he continues, "of having appeared in a series that has been seen so much in so many parts of the world has made me a recognizable face wherever I go, which gives me an opportunity to meet very different people. I'm lucky, because it has been a genuinely positive experience in most cases. It has allowed me to live very sweet moments with the fans, so I can't complain."

Apart from meeting new people and traveling, Heaton declares that "my greatest source of admiration is, I would say, to see the people I admire work. I also love discovering a new movie, or just having conversations with my friends. I love being able to talk to them about acting, confess to them what my desires are within this profession and listen to theirs. So I would say that these are small day-to-day inspirations."

Before dedicating himself full-time to acting, Charlie Heaton was going to be a musician. In fact, he was in a rock group (as a drummer) and then joined another psychedelic, so we talked about something more than a hobby. "Many people know that my two great creative passions are acting and music," he confesses to us, "but lately I have also gotten into ceramics (laughs). Yes, it may have become a passion, although I still don't know how important it's going to end up being... At the moment, I'm very excited about it, so we'll have to wait and see."

Fashion too, of course," Heaton clarifies. "It has always played a great role in my life, I have always loved being able to express myself through the clothes I choose to wear. But I find it strange to talk about this, since I would never go around considering myself a stylish person... I don't think so, but at the same time I do know that I am able to appreciate good taste and good style in general."

As for whether or not he follows some style routine, the actor is more ambivalent: "It depends on what I'm going to do at all times. For me, the great thing is when you do these things for yourself and only for yourself, instead of to go to a gala or impress someone. Dress well just for you, because you feel like it. I listened to every song named after current f1 drivers (so you dont have to)

Max: some of these are hype songs a la pitstop boys, and most of the ones that aren't are pretty odd lowkey. A couple are literally just his entire life story rhymed and set to a beat which gives me Homer vibes so that's kinda cool. Some are...kinda weird. 6/10 Special mention to Max verstappen by Abad 33. Man wrote a biographical rap, amazing

Checo: the same 3 bands that write all the max stadium chants are also writing checo ones which is kinda sweet! a lot of these are directly about him rather than namedropping him--he has a higher ratio of these than other drivers. Also not just rap/dance tracks, some are more traditional Mexican music which is awesome. Overall no skips here, 9.8/10 Special Mention: Checo Perez by Alan Y Roberto

Charles: most of these are along the lines of "im sexy and fuckin cool and i feel like charles leclerc" but the vibes are there. have heard at least 3 that reference Max or make ver-stop-him type puns. Also several modern epic poetry vibes and a few kinda slow ones, very him. 8.2/10 Special Mention: Charles Leclerc by SAE. The one by Alexander Lewis is also kind of a mood but a little more hype

Carlos: some really lowkey beats here, kinda chill not too aggressive. The only issue here is I can't tell if theyre about him or his dad and they're more namedrops than bios so it's hard to tell. 6/10 for that reason but special mention for Carlos Sainz by teme

Lewis: can confirm Lewis Hamilton by geezy is a mood lowkey but based on the line "swear i drive like a ferrari, I'm all about the wins" I think maybe geezy does not watch formula 1. These are good though! Lot of bops in here. a LOT of songs abt this man. 9.5/10 Special mention for being the only one on this list to have a song he sang in, shoutout to Pipe feat XNDA

Pierre: he actually has a couple but some of them are weird as hell. Weirdly enough every one I've found is in English, maybe because Gasly is really easy to rhyme in English? not sure. 7/10. Special mention to Pierre Gasly by FeldaLeaf, featuring the classic line "Pierre Gasly driving the Tauri, bitch I'm the alpha I got people coming for me"

Lando: actually thought he'd have more but he only has a couple. One is a hype song and the other is his roller coaster one. Overall fun but not hits. 5/10 Special mention: Let's Go Lando! by Pitstop Boys

Valtteri: has quite a few which all have car noises and radio clips and are pretty heavy/hard rock. These feel like they maybe came from the Mercedes era because they're just generally full of rage but i kind of love that for him. 7.6/10 Special Mention: Bottas by Arcangel, which is only slightly about him but is heavy as hell

Fernando: please just go listen to El Nano by Melendi, this is the happiest fucking song ive ever heard in my entire life. It's from the Renault era and it sounds so 2000s and i had to translate the lyrics but theyre SO cute. when he gets in his renault? Magic alonso!!!!! <33333 he honestly has the best music so im giving him 15/10 hands down but please know its mainly because of El Nano

anyone who was not listed isn't on here because I found no songs named after them, very sorry (parody songs written from the perspective of certain drivers not included). Takeaways from this exercise: there is a lot of bad self-produced rap on spotify, some of it is pretty good, and in general people are writing music about this sport like its the fuckin Iliad or something which I think rules. K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Onew

Onew is one of the five members of 2nd generation group SHINee, and debuted with them in 2008 before debuting as a soloist ten years later with Blue. Here are my credentials: If you’ve ever read my blog before, you’ll know I’m a huge ShaWol (SHINee fan), and so I’m slowly making my way through their solo discographies before eventually tackling their huge discography as a group. I’ve done Taemin, Jonghyun, Key, and now Onew, but Onew’s actually the one I know the least well, so I’m excited to get to know more! (Also shoutout to @fallsouthwinter, who knows his work like the back of their hand).

Blue is a ballad if ever there was one, and usually ballads take a lot to win me over…but this one managed! I love dancing and beautiful production, but I’m a singer at heart, and so I couldn’t help but be won over by Onew’s absolutely stunning voice mixed with such light strings. I don’t know exactly which life experiences the song is about, but the way he sings it, it’s like he’s pouring his heart into every note, and it’s quite an affecting performance, even without a translation. The MV too is gorgeous, all in shades of blue, gray, and white, swirling around him in a vortex.

Voice is quite a melancholy EP on the whole, but I still enjoyed the gentle pull-back and rush-forward of Your Scent, the catharsis in the slow-building Illusion, and especially the sweetness and warmth in the lyrics and acoustic guitar of Shine On You (my hidden gem); I go “aww” at the “I love you” every time.

Dice is a song that, somehow, I hadn’t actually heard before? It seems kind of shocking, considering it’s his most popular song. It goes the precise opposite way from Blue, being much cuter, poppier, and stranger (the last mostly in terms of music video), and overall reminded me a little of Jonghyun’s laid-back R & B style, just with a peppier edge. Though the song itself is nothing incredible, Onew’s voice makes everything more enjoyable, and the music video had me very amused (especially when they run away together, lol). I also like the bridge a lot. From the EP, also called Dice, I enjoyed the building synths in the dancy, appropriately sunny Sunshine (my hidden gem), the vintage background beat in On The Way, and the vulnerability expressed in Love Phobia.

Kirakira, of course, is a Japanese release, and returns to the orchestral style of Blue, but with a far more upbeat feeling that I think works quite well with his voice. It has an excellent driving beat from its underlying guitar (which actually gets a solo, here), and a brightness that feels like it comes from deep within. And, that music video is adorable; I can never resist a cat! This is actually my favorite single so far, which is a surprise. Apparently it’s a cover of an older J-pop song by Odu Kazumasa, and “Kirakira” literally means “shiny”, which I hope was a choice made on purpose, because if so, that’s very sweet.

From the EP, Who Sings?, I loved the jazzier direction taken with the building strings in the slowly burning (seven-minute-long!) Everything, which feels like more of an epic or opera than just a song, so I couldn’t pick anything else as my hidden gem. But, I also enjoyed the feel-good orchestral pop of Uroko.

Life Goes On is also a Japanese title, and like Kirakira, features the story of someone other than Onew in its music video (though he does appear in this one). It’s peppier from the outset, and feels like the OST of a drama set by the beach, which makes sense for a summer track. I especially enjoy its central message of joy and its encouragement for the little trials that life puts us through, and I admit that, though I expected to be bored at first, it won me over. From the EP, Life Goes On, my hidden gem was made by the 60’s indie-soft-rock vibes of Yoake No Sekai and the pathos and comfort in his voice in Lighthouse.

Circle is the first single I ever really saw from Onew, and it made me fall in love with his voice, for good reason. It’s so light and airy, but holds so much warmth and inner strength in it, which makes it quite unique. Circle is at times peaceful and soothing, and at others a little haunting with how high his voice goes. As a Wiccan, of course I appreciate the idea of life going on in cycles of seasons, years, and elements, and the ending with the full choir behind him mixed with the gentle strings and slow beat gave me goosebumps.

From the album, Circle, I had so many highlights: the coffee-shop vibeyness and percussive guitar of Rain On Me, the easy charm of Caramel (which reminded me of IU’s Bbibbi with its bubbly beat), the spacey synths of Anywhere, the soaring vocals and bright acoustic guitar of Paradise, the tongue-in-cheek vocalizing in the groovy No Parachute, and the cozy warmth of Walk With You. I completely understand why Billboard named it their top k-pop album of the year. Well deserved.

Inspiration and Knock On My Door are Japanese singles, and I won’t spend too much time on them. Inspiration combines a very classic K-pop winter sound (those twinkling sound effects!) with a peppy underlying beat, and is pretty enjoyable, as holiday-sounding songs go. Knock On My Door is slower and more stripped-back, opting once more for an acoustic guitar and the strength of Onew’s vocals to create what’s quite a pleasant song, but a bit forgettable.

I’m glad I did this! Looking through Onew’s discography is something I’ve been meaning to do for a while. I gained a brand new respect for Onew’s beautiful voice and how well it fits with strings. I don’t have the same emotional connection to his work that I do with Taemin’s, Key’s, and Jonghyun’s, but I think it could really grow on me in time.

My Top 5 songs are Kirakira, Circle, Everything, Life Goes On, and Shine On You, with No Parachute as an honorable mention. Onew gets an 8.25 out of 10 from me, which is about what I expected. Like with Kim Sejeong’s work, I’m not a fan of an overwhelming amount of ballads, but I found that besides that, it had a pretty decent balance. The genres he delves into aren’t always among my favorites, but when he nails it, he nails it.

Here Is The Post Where I Have Really Specific Opinions About Bang Dream Covers

ok but i'm just saying they gave the YOASOBI covers to the wrong bands

to date, Bang Dream has covered 3 YOASOBI songs: "ano yume wo nazotte", "kaibutsu", and, of course, "yoru ni kakeru". the first two went to Poppin'Party, while "yoru ni kakeru" went to Pastel*Palettes. here is the post where i explain why bushiroad is wrong

"yoru ni kakeru" is a melancholy song with a distinctly dark bent (the story it's based on, "an invitation from thanatos", is more explicitly a tale about the positive embrace of suicide in a way that i found surprisingly uplifting). despite Aya (Ami Maeshima)'s voice being a good match for Ikura's, she adds a little too much sweetness to what should be a bittersweet song at most. while the arrangement is very typically Pastel*Palettes, it isn't a particularly interesting arrangement, and the keys are relegated to more of an ensemble role instead of the driving force behind the music. the pasupare arrangement, with its bouncy bell synth subbing in for the piano, effectively strips it of the melancholy air that makes it so compelling a song. (i think pasupare covers have a history of not always having the best or most interesting arrangements; i feel strongly this way about their "lum no love song" cover as well. seriously what is with that intro) also, i KNOW Ami Maeshima can put a lot more power into her voice, but i feel like her vocals on this track are a little weak compared to, say, "sobakasu".

"ano yume wo nazotte" is one of the two Poppin'Party covers (and notably, importantly, my favorite song off YOASOBI's first album), although it differs in that it features hololive's Tokino Sora as well. honestly... it's Fine. i don't dislike it, exactly. vocals-wise (like many popipa songs) it would've benefited massively from Aimi being allowed to step outside her Kasumi voice a little to use more of her vocal range, and Sora's voice sounds a little too similar to Kasumi for them to really pop as a duet (although they do sound really cute together). the arrangement is solid — Elements Garden usually does a great job arranging keys-heavy songs for popipa that incorporate the guitars without taking away too much from the keyboard. it's a fine cover. it's nice.

"kaibutsu" is the other Poppin'Party cover and listen. once again, it's fine. once again, it would've been better if Aimi could've flexed her voice a little more. i think the best part of this cover is really the arrangement — unlike the pasupare cover of "yoru ni kakeru", this manages to preserve the original mood of the song in Poppin'Party's own musical dialect. but it ultimately really suffers for the vocals, which lack the force behind them to keep the song really compelling. which is a shame because we all know Aimi is capable of SO much vocally. oftentimes her Kasumi voice is wonderful, perfectly suited to the music, but in this case, it feels like a mismatch.

Now If I Were In Charge, Here's Who Would Get To Cover These Songs:

"yoru ni kakeru" - Roselia ft. Mashiro. while i've talked in the past about how Mashiro (Amane Shindou)'s vocals can come off kind of weak, especially in Morfonica's early releases, she would be perfect for this song, actually? Morfonica already trends toward the melodramatic, and Amane Shindou's voice has a softness to it that cuts down on the sweetness. the only trouble is that Morfonica is, notably, the only band without any kind of keyboard or keyboard-sound-producing setup, and "yoru ni kakeru" is a very keyboard-fronted track. i think the keyboard melodies would translate beautifully to violin, but i also don't think a solo violin could carry the musical weight that the keys do for the whole song. what's another band with a bit more of a dark tone that is also notable for its use of keyboard? it's Roselia's time to shine, babey!! while i think Amane Shindou could carry this track on her own vocally, Yukina (Aina Aiba) would ALSO sound incredible singing this whole song. i think the two of them would sound even better together! there's a concern that Aina Aiba's incredibly Powerful voice might drown out Amane Shindou, but i actually think that together they'd really be able to bring out the best in each other's voices. also, i just think this song would be really neat as a duet! and a Roselia arrangement? darken up those guitars a little, mix in some of their hallmark synths with the piano, yes??? reblog to agree that i'm correct

"ano yume wo nazotte" is the cover that should have gone to Pastel*Palettes. wistful without being sad, sweetly nostalgic... i think Ami Maeshima would have no problem knocking this one out of the park. i have zero difficulty imagining the refrain in her voice. it would sound great! and there's always the hope of a more interesting arrangement. this song, at least, would benefit more from the idol pop treatment than "yoru ni kakeru" imo.

"kaibutsu" RAISE A SUILEN RAISE A SUILEN HOW DID THIS NOT GO TO RAISE A SUILEN. i think bushiroad owes me emotional damages from not getting to hear LAYER (Raychell) belt out this song. this feels like such a massive missed cover opportunity i'm still not over it. just devastated tbh. the synths-into-piano and dissonant vocal harmonies are RIGHT up RAS's alley. they could have gone really synth-heavy on the whole and it would have sounded really cool.

this does leave popipa out of the mix, which is obviously not allowed, especially since their artist tie-up was Ayase, and if i had to pick one of the three for them it'd be "ano yume wo nazotte". however i submit an alternative: Poppin'Party cover of "haruka". the mood is perfect for them, and Aimi has already done a wonderful cover herself. that said, although her lower vocal range is criminally underused in Bang Dream, i think this song would come out perfectly fun in her Kasumi voice.

anyway in summary im going to need bushiroad to consult with me when they decide who should get to cover "suki da" (the only correct answer is pasupare)
