Tis The Damn Season
Tumblr media
Summary: You return to home around the holidays, bringing up some unresolved feelings between you and your best friend Nolan. This was highly inspired by the song Tis the damn season but Taylor Swift. I highly recommend listening to it (its amazing) and it really sets the ~vibe~. Word count: 5.3k
a/n: this is my longest one shot ever I think omg. but I love it so much I think this is my favorite fic I have ever written. let me know what you think and please Enjoy!
Warnings: smut
You walked down the street of your hometown, accompanied only by your breath going up in smoke. You were surprised that you were barely even registering the cold. You had assumed when you left Winnipeg for LA, your body would completely lose all its defenses to these frigid temperatures. However, as you were beginning to learn, the Canadian cold was the kind that seeped into your body and made a home out of you. It never truly left.
You almost forgot how silent Canadian nights were, the blankets of snow soaking up nearly every sound. If it wasn’t for the crunch of snow under your boots, you imagined it would be silent enough to hear your heart thumping in your chest. Especially now, as your heart began to realize where your feet were taking you. Nolan’s house.
You’ve been back at your parents’ house for a few days now as you got ready for the holidays. You hadn’t so much as seen Nolan once since you returned. In normal circumstances that would be absolutely unheard of, but considering you haven’t heard from Nolan in months, circumstances were certainly not normal.
Ever since you returned home, you’d been going on these nightly walks, as if trying to retrace your steps to that night where it all went so wrong. It felt like years ago thinking back to it now. It had been an oddly mild March night - nothing like the weather now - and you were home for spring break. It was your last semester at school and you had made probably what was the biggest decision of your life up until that moment. Instead of moving back home from your school in California after graduation, you were going to stay there. It was bittersweet, you loved your hometown and all the family and friends that inhabited it, but you also felt like you were meant for something more. Something bigger.
You were sitting with Nolan on your porch, enjoying your last night before you would return to school when you told him.
“What do you mean you’re moving there? Like permanently?” Nolan had asked, brows stitched together in confusion. His response had taken you aback; you expected him to be surprised but he seemed genuinely upset.
“I mean I can’t predict where I’ll end up forever, but it would definitely be permanent for the foreseeable future,” you had explained.
“I’m never going to see you,” Nolan had replied, his voice barely above a whisper. There was genuine hurt in his voice that was creating an ache in you that you couldn’t quite place.
“Nols, we barely see each other now. Remember that team you play for? In Philly? That not exactly close to home,” you had tried to sound light, but the joke fizzled and died in the tension between the two of you.
“You shouldn’t do it y/n,” Nolan replied, shocking you with his lack of support. You were rarely ever angry at Nolan, but this sparked annoyance in you. He was your best friend, why wasn’t he happy for you?
“It’s not up to you,” you replied, more defensive than you intended. You couldn’t help it, everyone you told had been questioning you and you had built up frustration. You’d thought about this for a while, and it felt right, you didn’t understand why everyone was acting like you were making some crazy impulsive decision. No one questioned Nolan when he went after his dream of playing in the NHL, so why was this suddenly so crazy to all your friends and family?
“And what are you gonna do there? What friends do you have?” he had fired back.
The anger in his voice made the words sting more than they should have. “I have a job lined up after graduation. And I have plenty of friends, thank you very much.” Anger was bubbling up in you - you were notorious for letting yourself get to a boiling point and just explode at someone. Nolan was getting dangerously close to being the unlucky victim.
“Right, your LA friends how could I forget,” Nolan muttered, rolling his eyes. Nolan had visited you once while you were in college. Let’s just say he didn’t exactly get along with your friends there. He hasn’t visited since. Partially because of his busy schedule, and partially because you knew he thought they were… not his type of people (to put it nicely).
“Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean they’re bad people,” you snapped. What did he know? “And why are so pissed about this? I didn’t throw a fit when you moved to Philly.”
“That’s completely different.”
“How?”
Nolan stared at his hands, and you knew him long enough to know that what he did when he was something weighing heavy on his mind. He opened his mouth a few times before finally speaking, “I don’t want you to be that far from me.”
You were taken aback again but in a completely different manner. “What do you-”
Before you could even process what was happening, his hand cupped your face and his lips found yours. That was the closest you had ever been to a heart attack. Nolan was your first and best friend. Your parents had met in college, their friendship being the predecessor to yours. You were born pretty close together, so you’ve literally known him your entire life. There was no one you were closer with, no one who knew you better. You’re not exactly sure when your feelings grew beyond friendship. You supposed the seeds had been planted early, blooming over time into something you couldn’t control even if you tried.
Having a crush on your best friend is about as fun as it sounds, especially when you don’t think they feel the same. That’s why it shocked you so much to feel him kiss you. It was something you’d wanted for years, though you had never thought it would ever be a reality. You were speechless.
Nolan must have sensed your shock when he pulled away. He mumbled something that sounded like a goodbye and left in a hurry. You should have said something. You should have gone after him. But you didn’t, you sat there, weighed down by surprise of a dream coming true in a nightmarish way.
And then silence.
Nolan didn’t come to see you off the next day. He’d never missed you leaving for college, even when it was just returning after a break like this. The two of you rarely went more than a day without speaking and now there was nothing. With every day that passed that you didn’t hear from him, the ache that started that night you told him you were moving grew. Now that it had been months since you last spoke to him, it practically consumed you.
You knew how ridiculous it looked. He was your best friend, you should have been able to reach out to him. But that kiss had left you in a vacuum. Nothing made sense after it. Besides, he kissed you, shouldn’t he be the one to break the ice? Maybe that was a silly way to think of it, but with the more time that passed without speaking, the harder it felt to reach out. Now that it had been months, it seemed like an impossible bridge to gap.
Every night since you returned, you had walked the block that your homes share. Deep down, you knew your feet were on a mission to get you to his place, but it wasn’t until today that you were able to get close. You had always pulled yourself away before you could really get a good look at it. Today, however, you were finally standing in front of it, basking in the familiar, warm glow.
Your heart began to pound, realizing at any moment someone from his family could look out and see you standing there. You were about to turn around and hightail it home when the front door opening caused you to freeze. Your breath caught in your throat. It was Nolan.
His head was down, a grey beanie pulled down low over his forehead. He almost didn’t notice you; his eye only catching you when he reached his car. He stopped in his tracks, looking at you as if trying to decide if you were real.
“Y/n? Is that you?” he asked, his voice somewhere between confusion and conservative joy.
“Yeah, uh- hey,” was the only thing you could get out. You suddenly became aware of just how cold it was.
“Hey,” he replied, his voice seeming to be just on the crest of a quiver, “Where you… what are you doing out here?” It was clear he didn’t know what to make of you standing outside his house, and you didn’t blame him. You probably would be equally as shocked if the tables were turned.
You searched your brain for something to say. Nolan was someone you could talk about anything with, so it was killing you now to feel like you couldn’t find the right words to say to him. “I was just going for a walk I guess,” you answered finally. It was partially true.
“Clearing your head?” he guessed.
You nodded, allowing the smallest of smiles. He still could read you after all this time. “Yeah, I guess that’s exactly what I was doing.”
“Me too,” Nolan replied, motioning to his car. There was a quick silence before he asked, “Do you wanna join me?”
You could feel your blood coursing through you, spreading sweet warmth spiked with nerves. You missed him so much, and even though you didn’t know if it was smart to spend time with him when you didn’t even know what you wanted to say to him, you could not resist getting into his truck. You desperately needed something familiar.
You nodded and Nolan gave you one of his infamous half-smiles, punctuated by the click of his truck doors unlocking. You silently slipped into the passenger seat, something you’ve done a million times before, breathing in the scent you knew would be there. Mint and clean leather. Somethings never change.
It was weird going through the motions as nothing had ever changed. You could almost pretend that things hadn’t. However, the thick silence that settled between the two of you prevented you from reveling in that dream. It was so foreign to sit next to Nolan and feel uncomfortable. You never felt awkward around him - well there was that one time when he walked in on you in your bra but that was short-lived. He went out and bought a bra just so you could walk in on him in one so the two of you were even. It was ridiculous but it made you laugh and forget about your embarrassment. That was one of your favorite things about Nolan, he always knew how to make you feel better now. You could use that Nolan.
“Where were you planning on going?” You asked when you couldn’t stand the silence anymore. You tried to sound casual, but you heard the nerves fraying in your own voice.
“Somewhere we both know well,” Nolan replied. Cryptic as always, but you didn’t push. You had a feeling you knew where he was going anyway. The dark road sprawled out before you, illuminated only by his headlights and street lamps that were losing a fighting battle against the darkness of a December night in Canada.
You didn’t expect Nolan to say much as he drove, and you were still at a loss so the silence continued, heavy and suffocating. It felt like the two of you were fighting to breathe in the last bit of oxygen the small space had to offer. That made it all the more of a relief when you recognized the turns Nolan was taking. He was going to a park the two of you spent a ridiculous amount of time in as children. Even as you grew, it continued to be a place the two of you enjoyed, whether it be hiking the trails in the summer or sledding down the giant hill in the winter. It also became the location of many of your heart to hearts when one of you was going through something. A fitting spot for whatever was about to happen.
Nerves fluttered through your stomach as he pulled in. You knew a talk was coming, but you had no idea where the two of you would stand when he drove you out and that terrified you.
Nolan parked by the playground, buried under a thick blanket of snow. It stood like a relic to a lost childhood, a sense of freedom and possibility that was lost under burdens it wasn’t meant to bear.
“I would say we should go to our bench, but I don’t think you’d survive the trek,” Nolan joked lightly. The bench he was referring to was the one you always had your talks at. It was tucked away beyond the playground under a large maple, which you could see peeking out above the climbing walls. Somewhere on that tree “NP + Y/I friends 4 evr” was carved into the trunk. You weren’t sure how many summers ago the two of you did it anymore, but you do know you wished you’d carved a heart instead of just friends. Regardless, it puts a smile on your face every time you see it.
“Me? I didn’t know you were suddenly immune to frostbite,” you replied as playfully as you could manage.
“I’m better off than you. I haven’t been spending the last few months in LA.” You knew it was supposed to be a joke, but it came out with an accusatory edge. Any response you could think of died on your lips. A fight was the last thing you wanted to start right now. Back to silence.
Both of you kept your eyes trained ahead; it was a lot easier than facing each other. That didn’t stop you from stealing glances from your peripheral, trying to get a read on him. Nolan had an infamous poker face, but his energy was palpable. He was buzzing like a fluorescent.
Suddenly you couldn’t take it anymore. “Why?” You broke through the wall of ice between the two of you. “Why did you disappear on me?”
“I’ve been here the whole time. Technically you disappeared on me,” Nolan replied.
“I told you I was going,” you shot back.
“Yeah, the day before. More of a warning would have been nice,” he mumbled.
“Oh, so you could have a few extra days to ignore me?” Your words came out more venomous than you intended. Months of sadness were being compressed into a deep, hurting frustration.
Nolan finally looked at you, hurt etched into the blue of his eyes. A street light shined behind him, giving him an ethereal glow. Even though he was upset with you, he still took your breath away. “Talking is a two-way street you know,” he fired back, “You never picked up the phone either. I thought… I don’t know.”
“What?” you pressed.
“I thought you forgot about me.” His voice was barely audible, his eyes falling away from yours.
You couldn’t help but let out a strained laugh since it was the absolute opposite of the truth. “Nolan I thought about you every single day since I left,” you admitted without thought. You quickly added, “As pathetic and weird as that sounds, it’s the truth.”
“I thought about you every day, too,” he replied, looking at you again. Some of the hurt has dissipated in response to your statement.
“So why didn’t I hear from you?” You were less accusatory and more curious in tone this time. The anger was leaving you, now you were just confused and sad over the time you lost with him.
Nolan, taking off his beanie for a second to run his hand through his hair. “I guess I thought I fucked up,” he replied, pulling the beanie back into place. He added sheepishly, “By kissing you, I mean.”
Your heart ached. “Did you regret it?” you asked, trying not to show how much of a blow it would be to you if he said yes.
“No,” he replied, “I mean I would only regret it if it pushed you away, which I sort of feel like I did. You just looked so shocked and upset after, I thought I crossed a line. Then when I didn’t hear from you, I thought you were mad.” He paused, looking down at his hands, turning words over in his head. “I guess I was kind of embarrassed, too,” he said finally, “I’ve wanted to do that for so long, and then it kinda blew up in my face.”
You couldn’t believe what you heard. He wanted to kiss you? For a long time? You covertly pinched yourself to make sure this wasn’t some cruel dream. “You have?”
Nolan let out an embarrassed laugh. “Yeah, I have. I was just scared if you didn’t feel the same it would completely fuck up our friendship. Which it looks like I succeeded in doing.” he sighed.
You shook your head. “Nolan, you could not be more wrong,” you replied. He cocked a brow at you and you continued, “I’ve had a crush on you since- well- forever. I’ve wanted to kiss you for the longest time. I was just so shocked that it happened I sorta shut down.”
“Seriously?”
“Seriously,” you confirmed. “God I feel like such an idiot.”
“That makes two of us,” Nolan half laughed. You joined him in the short laughter, fueled mostly by shock. A short silence returned as the two of you digested the weight of the revelations you just had.
“So… where do we go from here?” Nolan asked finally.
You let out a long sigh as you tried to collect your thoughts. “I’m not sure,” you replied honestly. “I mean hearing that you feel the same way as I do as you is the best news I’ve gotten in like, well ever,” you paused laughing at yourself, “But these last few months… they’ve been so hard. It’s hard to digest all this.”
“Was it all bad because of me?” Nolan asked, concernedly.
“No, not entirely,” you replied, not wanting him to feel guilty. In truth, he was only part of the equation. You had a ridiculous stubborn streak so it was hard for you to admit that maybe moving to LA wasn’t a great idea. You quickly learned that going to school and living/working somewhere were two totally different things. In school, you knew your friends were available every weekend; there was always something to do and people to be with. Now, everyone was weighed down by jobs and responsibilities that far outweighed term papers. Not to mention the job you thought was perfect was looking more like a dead end every day. Plus, Nolan may have been right about a few of your friends not being so great.
You continued, “It’s just, well it’s hard for me to admit, but LA isn’t exactly what I thought it was going to be. It was definitely hard without you, like so many times I wanted to reach out to you, but I didn’t because I was scared and confused. I feel pretty stupid about that now.”
You half expected Nolan to tell you he told you so, which you wouldn’t even blame him if he did, but he said, “I wish I was there for you. I’m sorry”
“It’s okay, it’s not your fault, we were both kinda stupid,” you replied as lightly as you could, “But if these last few months have taught me anything, it’s that I need you in my life. If we were together and something went wrong and I lost you, I don’t even know what I’d do.”
Nolan nodded in agreement, “You’re my best friend, I never want anything to come between that.” You both believed the words you spoke, and yet it felt like things were unfinished. You both weren’t satisfied with going back like nothing had ever happened.
“What if,” you began slowly, “I mean I’m here for a few more days, what if we just gave this - us - a shot during that time. We don’t tell anyone, it’s just for us to explore. If it doesn’t work out we can just go back to being best friends and forget this mess. But if it does… well I guess we will go from there.”
“I think that’s perfect,” Nolan agreed, joy creeping into his voice for the first time since you began talking. You couldn’t help but fling your arms around him in a big hug. It’s been so fucking long since you got to do that; it brought you an indescribable level of joy just to feel his arms around you again.
You both pulled back, smiling at each other, the hurt of the last few months melting away. Nolan brought his hand to your face and pulled you in for a soft kiss. Your head was spinning.
“As much as I wanted to do that the first time,” he said with a smile when he pulled away, “I wanted to do it a million times more now.” You giggled, pulling him back to your lips. You were never going to get tired of this.
“Take me home Nols,” you said breathlessly when you were finally able to peel yourself away. Nolan smiled, quickly shifting his truck into gear. You loved that you didn’t have to specify his home. He knew you, better than anyone.
Silence returned, but of a much different variety. It was now charged, alive with the promise of what was to come. You kept your hand firmly laced with Nolan’s, not wanting to give up touching me for a second. You’ve wanted this for so long, you had lost time to make up for. Years of it.
You’ve never been more glad that the basement of Nolan’s house had been turned into a little apartment for him. You absolutely adored his family, but you didn’t want to be seen by any of them sneaking into his room at this hour. That would be hard to explain.
Nolan helped you out of the truck, lifting you over some large piles of snow. After just a few steps over ice and banks of snow, Nolan decided it was easier to just carry you. You didn’t protest, letting out only a muffle shriek-giggle as he hoisted you on to his back. He navigated the tundra that was his yard with you clinging to him like it was nothing.
The warmth of his little place enveloped you the second he opened the door. Your lips found each other with a newfound excitement as the door closed behind you. You breathed in his familiar scent - mint and cedar - and realized why you had bought so many cedar candles when you moved. You’d been trying to replicate Nolan’s scent subconsciously, but nothing compared to the original. You began pulling off each other’s outerwear, trying to keep as much contact as possible. Within minutes coats and snowflakes were surrounding your feet.
You continued to kiss and peel off clothing as you half walked, half stampeded to his bedroom. You’d been in it plenty of times before when you guys hung out, but it felt so much more intimate this time around. You fell backwards onto his bed, his sheets greeting your back like a soft kiss. Nolan climbed on top of you, a heavy, lusty grin painted on his face. You took in each other, both only in your underwear. Rationally you knew it was no different than seeing each other in a bathing suit, something you’ve experienced countless times, but it still felt worlds apart. You couldn’t help but blush under his gaze.
Nolan’s hand came under your chin, tilting your face so he could look at you in the eyes. “No need to be shy, love,” his voice was smooth as honey, “It’s only me.” He punctuated his words with kisses down your neck. He to plant extra slow, sweet kisses around the edge where your bra met your skin, before removing the garment from your body. “So pretty,” he breathed against your skin. You tangled your fingers through his hair as his kissed and sucked lightly at your delicate skin.
“Nols,” you breathed as you felt his length brush against your clothed core. There were two too many layers of fabric between you. “Please.”
“I got you baby,” he cooed. He shed the final bits of clothing from the two of you and you sucked in a breath. He was bigger than you thought (because yes you had thought about it more than you care to admit), but moreso, you couldn’t believe this was happening. For so long, Nolan had felt like a dream to you, beautiful but always just out of reach. But now he was here in the flesh, touching you and kissing you and fuck you don’t know how you got this damn lucky.
“God you’re perfect,” he sighed, reverent.
“Look who’s talking,” you replied, running your hands down his body, truly feeling him. “You’re like a god or an angel or something.” You were tripping over your words, completely flustered by having him like this. So flustered, that you didn’t even notice his hand trailing up your thighs until two fingers slid into. Your head fell back, a moan melting from your lips.
“Now that’s angelic,” Nolan smiled, returning his lips to your neck. You weren’t sure if it was because you were so into him or if he was a master with his hands(probably both), but he had you worked up in minutes. Your body reacted to his every touch, arching into him to get as close as possible.
“Nolan I’m gonna-” the words died on your lips as a wave of bliss flooded your body. You let out breathless gasps, feeling a pleasure you have never previously experienced.
“Fuck that was hot,” Nolan said almost to himself. The way he looked at you made you feel like you could cum all over again.
“I need you Nols,” you said, greedy for more. He didn’t skip a beat, fishing out a condom from his bedside table before returning to you. Your heart was pounding with nervous excitement and you silently told it that you would never forgive it if it gave out before you got to finish this experience.
Nolan seemed to sense your nerves and pressed a soft kiss to your lips before saying, “We’ll go slow. Just enjoy it.” You nodded kissing him back before positioning him against you. You were so slick from your first orgasm that he slid in easy, though it didn’t make the feeling any less intense. Your back arched and Nolan gripped your hips into place, hissing at the feeling of you around him.
It wasn’t until he was all the way in that you both let out a breath. You felt so full and satisfied you’d be fine if he stopped there. Of course, he had other plans in mind. True to his word, he went slow, drawing out every thrust to let you feel each other. “You feel fucking amazing,” the words tumbled out of his mouth. If you weren’t so blissed out you may have been able to muster a reply.
Slowly, his pace quickened and you knew you weren’t going to last much longer. It was crazy what Nolan did to you, the way he was able to make you feel this good. And he knew it too. Sensing you were close again, his thumb found your clit, rubbing circles over the already sensitive spot. “Come on baby, cum for me,” he purred, licking his lips.
It was all  you needed to succumb to his euphoria. His name left your mouth in a moan as you came for the second time. You barely heard his curses through your fog of bliss, but you couldn’t mistake the feeling of him twitching inside you as he came along with you. This blew everything you ever imagine out of the water by a mile.
“That was…” Nolan’s voice trailed off as he collapsed beside you. He pulled you on to his chest, peppering you with kisses.
“Amazing? Mind blowing? Perfect?” you offered.
“Perfect,” he confirmed, kissing you once more.
*** The next few days passed in a blur of pure perfection. There is nothing more that you needed after your disastrous few months in LA than to be surrounded by the people you love at the holidays. And being with Nolan made it all the more better. Truly, it wasn’t much more different than when you were friends, except there was a lot more kissing and touching under dinner tables.
When you weren’t enjoying these magical moments, your mind was going a mile a minute. You were trying to figure out all your options and navigate all the paths you could possibly take in your mind. No matter how many different possibilities you came up with, they always lead you back to Nolan. After these few days you couldn’t imagine your life without Nolan, and not just as a friend, but as a lover. Not just a lover, the lover, the only one you’d ever need. Or want.
Making that revelation both excited and terrified you. If he didn’t feel the same it would crush you. Those feelings came to a head on your last night, sitting out on your porch with Nolan like those many months ago. You could hear Christmas music and laughter of your families floating out from your house.
“So,” Nolan began.
“So,” you echoed, feeling the weight of the moment pressing down on you.
“I’m just gonna cut to the chase,” he began, “I don’t think I’ve ever been  happier than I have been in these past few days. I love you, y/n. I always have and I probably always will even if you don’t feel the same. But I want this. I want us.”
You practically jumped on him, giving him a long kiss and not caring if anyone inside saw. “I love you too, Nolan,” trying to fight back tears. They were happy ones, but they’d probably freeze on your face. Nolan beamed brighter than you’d ever seen him.
“I have a sort of crazy thought though,” you admitted.
“What’s that?”
“I know I want to be in a city and all this time I thought LA was my perfect fit. But it’s certainly not,” you huffed, “But I think I know what would be. Philly.” Nolan looked at you like he was trying to decode if you were joking. You were most certainly not. What if he thought it was crazy? Or too much too soon.
Your insecurities disappeared as quickly as they came as he said, “There is nothing I would love more.” You hugged him tightly, wondering how it was possible for one person to feel so much joy.
“There’s just one more thing we gotta do,” Nolan smirked, “Tell our parents.” His head tilted to the front door.
“No offense, but I think your mom is gonna love this more than the necklace you gave her,” you teased, standing up and dusting some snow off of you.
Nolan chuckled, “You say that as if this hasn’t been on your mom’s list for years.” You giggled because he was absolutely right.
You took his hand as he led you back into your house. The warmth of both your home and all the people in it hit you the second the door opened, embracing you in an overwhelming sense of joy. There was absolutely no feeling in the world like loving Nolan, and you were so glad it was your feeling to keep. Forever.

first snow (heeseung)
summary: you make a promise to confess to heeseung on the day of the first snowfall warnings: slight slight angst at certain parts (๑ ˊ͈ ᐞ ˋ͈ )ƅ̋ wc: 2.2k a/n: for holiday hearts; this turned out to be a little longer than i intended but i’m not mad about it ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ (belated) merry christmas and an (early) happy new year to everyone! <3
Tumblr media
❄️❄️❄️
“on the day of the first snowfall, we confess. okay?”
jake’s eyes are wide open as he looks at you, his hand gripping your arm tightly from where he is sitting beside you on your bedroom floor. he’s serious about this, you can tell, but you can’t help but sigh at his proposition.
“jake, are you sure about this? it could literally snow tomorrow. would you be able to confess tomorrow?”
“yes! i would! and you should too! what’s stopping you?”
well. what’s stopping you is the thought of your best friend hearing your confession and then looking at you like you’re crazy. that’s how it always goes down in your imagination—you confess, heeseung freezes, and then he looks at you like you’re insane before turning you down gently.
you always picture him to have a slight look of pity in his eyes when he hears your confession—a look that says i wish i liked you too, but i don’t. that look from your imagination is what’s stopping you.
one day you’re going to turn around and dropkick the infuriating little voice in your head that always comes up with the worst possible scenarios for you in any given situation.
“it’s okay, y/n. it’ll turn out just fine, trust me.” jake says, as if reading your mind.
and as much as you fear the possibility of rejection, it’s even harder to live everyday wondering what could be if only you were that much braver.
“fine. but only if you confess to her first. text me that you’ve confessed, and then i’ll do it.”
“deal!” jake’s entire face lights up as you give in. “besides, they say if you confess on the day of the first snow, the two of you will stay together for a long, long time.”
❄️❄️❄️
you spend majority of the next week making sure that you’re always in view of a window, eyes anxiously looking out at even the slightest hints of movement outside in case it’s a snowflake falling. you spend the rest of the time with your eyes trained on your phone, afraid that somehow snow had fallen and you hadn’t noticed and jake had texted you that he had confessed to his crush and you would be up next.
luckily for you, neither of those things happen.
in fact, the only notification you get on your phone is a text from heeseung himself.
just stole my brother’s netflix account. wanna come watch smth?
hanging out with heeseung on his couch, his feet on your lap as you give him the stinky eye for having his stinky feet so close to your nose, both of you laughing at the low-budget horror film that’s playing on the tv—none of this feels new to you.
actually, it’s the farthest thing from new. the both of you have been best friends for years now, and you like to think you know almost everything there is to know about him by now. spending time with heeseung feels like the easiest thing to do.
“is there something on my face?” heeseung asks, launching a popcorn at your head. “why are you staring at me like that?”
but of course, nothing is actually easy when your best friend is oblivious and you like him and you don’t know when it’s going to start snowing or what you’re going to say once it does.
“i’m not,” you reply, although you quite obviously are.
you push his feet off of your lap as he aims another popcorn at you. “get your stinky feet off my lap, for god’s sake.”
“hey, hey, don’t bring god into this.” he sits upright and scoots next to you on the couch. the both of you turn your attention back to the film before he speaks again, his eyes not leaving the screen.
“anyway, what are you doing on christmas eve?”
“nothing much. dinner with my family, i think. what about you?”
heeseung takes a moment to answer, his eyes trained on the television so closely that for a second, you think he hasn’t heard your reply and is actually back to watching the film.
in that same second you also wonder if maybe he’ll ask you to spend the evening with him instead, but you stuff that thought back where it came from before you start forming any real hope.
“yeah, i think i’m spending it with my family, too.” he finally answers, and as if on cue, the girl from the horror movie lets out a horrifying scream.
❄️❄️❄️
jake sends you a screenshot of the weather report the next week. it reads: first snow of the season expected to fall today. total snow accumulation predicted to be 2 to 5 inches.
“prepare your confession speech,” he texts you. “we have to do it today.”
somewhere in the back of your mind you wonder why jake is being so dramatic about all of this. if he was so ready to confess, he could just do it now instead of waiting for snowfall. or maybe he just really believed in that “if you confess on the day of the first snow you’ll last longer” theory.
either way, The Confession was fast approaching and you have yet to come up with a concrete plan about how you’re going to confess. you have been actively trying to avoid thinking about it for the sole reason that every time you do, that nasty voice in the back of your head begins pushing you down a spiral of anxiety. but not thinking about it is just making you nervous in its own way.
so naturally, to take your mind off heeseung, you text heeseung.
twenty minutes later he’s on your chair, aimlessly rolling around your room as you lie on your bed.
“what do you wanna do?”
“i don’t know, anything. i’m so bored.”
“me too. my brother changed his netflix password so i can’t use his account anymore.”
you chuckle, turning your head to face him. he looks absolutely breathtaking in his hoodie, the soft pink hue of the fabric a charming contrast against the rich colour of his skin.
“let’s come up with new year’s resolutions for the new year.” you reply. it’s a conversation the two of you have together almost every year-end, and you want to know what is on heeseung’s mind this time.
“hm… okay, the first one for me is to exercise regularly. i’m gonna be swole this time next year.”
you snort. “isn’t that what you said last year?”
heeseung can’t help but laugh at that, but his tone is indignant as he replies. “this time it’s for real!!!”
“fine, fine, what’s your next one?”
“next one… would be to learn how to play the guitar?”
you nod at this-unfortunately you can’t bring yourself to tease a music prodigy about his love for music.
“that’s nice. you’ll have to play for me once you learn.”
you stare up at the ceiling, wondering what your new year’s resolution should be. you wonder vaguely if heeseung will still be by your side to have this same conversation with you next year.
“actually, i have one last one,” heeseung says, rolling over languidly to your table to fiddle with the stationery you have strewn all over the tabletop. “i’m going to confess to my crush next year.”
you freeze. his crush?
“you look like you’ve seen a ghost,” heeseung says, giggling softly at the expression on your face. “what’s so shocking about that?”
“your crush? you never told me you had someone you liked,” you say, unable to keep the tone of surprise and slight betrayal out of your voice.
this changes everything, doesn’t it? if heeseung has someone he likes, you can’t just confess knowing that he definitely does not return your feelings. your mind is going a mile per minute, and all you can do is sit and stare at heeseung, who looks as gorgeous as always as he doodles absentmindedly on your notebook.
“i do,” he replies quietly, a small smile on his face as he looks up at you. wow, he must really like whoever it is if just the mention of them makes him smile like this. “you know this person, too!”
great.
“who…—” but before you can finish your question, heeseung suddenly gasps as his eyes widen almost comically, peering out of the window that is directly above your desk.
“y/n! look!” heeseung says, parting the curtains fully and gesturing you to come over. “it’s snowing!!!”
oh my god. it’s like the snow gods are laughing at you.
you make your way over and watch with your mouth open as the snowflakes twirl and fall, softly piling up upon one another on the concrete pavement. it isn’t heavy, and the snow on the ground is quickly melting, but there’s no denying that it is, in fact, snowing. the one damn time the weather forecast is right and it’s for this.
“it really is snowing,” you mumble, leaning closer out the window to get a better look.
“this is so pretty! do you think we’ll get a white christmas this year?” heeseung presses up against the window right beside you, turning to look at you with an expectant look in his eyes. lee heeseung, whose eyes sparkle at the mere thought of it snowing on the most festive day of the year. your heart squeezes painfully in your chest.
honestly, you think to yourself. just because he likes someone else doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to tell him what you feel, right? you don’t expect anything back from him, you could just follow through on your promise with jake and get it off your chest and continue with life as per normal. heeseung wouldn’t be weird about it-he’s heeseung.
“y/n?” heeseung asks, waving an unsure hand in front of you. “is everything okay?”
there’s a confused smile on his face, and his warm brown eyes look concerned as they search yours.
“heeseung, i think i have something to tell you.”
“suddenly?” his brows furrow in confusion. “you can tell me anything, you know. what is it?”
“i know you just said there’s someone else you like, and i know this seems like it’s out of the blue, but i have someone i really like too.”
heeseung’s eyes widen just a fraction, but he maintains his expression. “what? who is it?”
you take an unsteady breath. there’s no turning back now.
“it’s you, heeseung.”
“…it’s me?”
“you don’t have to say anything. i know you already like someone else, i’m just confessing because i made a pact with jake. we can just forget what i said and move o—”
“a pact with jake???” heeseung looks confused, his mind racing to keep up with your words.
“yeah, we had a promise. it’s nothing big, actually, it was something about the snow and. never mind, i shouldn’t ha—”
you cut yourself off when you suddenly feel heeseung’s hands on either side of your face. his hands are warm, slightly rough because it’s the winter and he never uses hand cream even when you tell him too.
“you don’t get to confess and then just move on like that,” he says, his face a mere few inches away from yours as he turns to face you.
“aren’t you going to ask me who the person i like is?” he asks, and your mind goes blank. what does it matter who he likes now? when you’ve just confessed to him?
he sighs slightly at your silence. “i thought i was being fairly obvious. it’s you, y/n. i was going to confess to you in the new year.” he smiles unsteadily as he says this, eyes sparkling the same way it did at the mention of a white christmas earlier. “now stop looking so upset, i just told you i like you, too.”
he pats your cheek playfully as his smile widens, watching in amusement at the shock on your face.
you had come up with a hundred different ways in which this could have ended, but none of your scenarios ever looked like this. suddenly the heat from his hands on the sides of your face feels a bit too warm.
“really? are you sure?”
“of course i’m sure, y/n! why wouldn’t i be sure?” he asks with a soft chuckle. “i’ve felt this way for the longest time now.”
for the longest time now. your stomach does a funny flip at the words, your heart stuttering as the reality of the situation dawns upon you.
you confessed and lee heeseung confessed right back. lee heeseung likes you and he says he’s sure about it.
everything’s falling into place, just like the soft, white flakes finding a home on the broad, sturdy branches of the oak tree outside.
maybe jake is right-something about the first snow really does feel magical.
(the moment is broken by the violent buzzing of your phone from where it is on your bed.
jake: y/n look out it’s snowing!!!
jake: it’s time!!!
jake: wait actually i’m not sure about this
jake: i don’t even know where she is right now
jake: i’m scared. this is scarier than i thought
jake:
jake: y/n are u there???)

can’t help falling in love with you

christmas movies and cuddles with a hint of falling in love along the way
okay so the timeline is like they met in the fall, got together the next spring, and this is the christmas after. so like they’ve been dating 9-10 months
it’s 5 a.m. hahaha fuck. it’s a 4+1 format though!
(warnings: cursing, drinking, zero editing)
You had two problems.
The first was something you noticed early on. It was Isaac’s tendency to make himself small. Maybe not physically, but it was like he hated being too needy. You weren’t sure if it was because he thought it would bother you or if it was just a habit of trying to not take up much space, but you wanted to get to the root of it.
It took you a few weeks to figure out how to bring it up, and you really only did because of his reaction to a goodbye hug. You squeezed him tight when he left, and he full body shivered. Pulling away quickly, you gave him a concerned look, “Everything okay, did I hurt you?”
He smiled wryly and shook his head, “I’m good. Just needed a hug more than I realized.”
You’d had suspicions that physical touch was pretty high up on his preferred love languages, but he’d never said anything about it, and he kept his personal space relatively well, so you’d pushed the thought away. Maybe you should’ve just pressed it anyway.
That afternoon you promised yourself that you were going to be better. If he was too scared to ask, you wouldn’t make him, you’d just look for it more. Luckily, it was pretty obvious when he needed it.
The second was Isaac’s lack of experience with holiday movies. One afternoon, the two of you met for lunch between your classes. It was almost finals week and you’d started listening to Christmas music for the serotonin boost.
“You know,” you started when he sat down across from you, “Carol of the Bells hits so nice when you’re speed walking across campus. Reminds me of Home Alone and I feel like I can do anything.”
He hummed thoughtfully, nodding along, “Yeah, I bet.”
“You know what I’m talking about right?”
Isaac shrugged, “No, but I believe you.”
Your jaw dropped, “You’ve never seen Home Alone?”
“I never really watched Christmas movies growing up. We didn’t really do much of anything for the holidays. My dad worked a lot and my mom wasn’t there either.”
He avoided your eyes, and your heart sank. Over the months of dating, he’d pointedly avoided talking about his family. You weren’t really upset, it was his business and you figured he’d tell you when he felt comfortable, but the little references made you sad when he made them.
“We should watch some this year. It’s like a family tradition at my house to watch a bunch leading up to Christmas.”
You couldn’t help but notice his face soften a bit at the word family, and you were determined to make this first Christmas together great.
One: Klaus
Isaac cooked dinner, spaghetti and meatballs, with little to no help from you. Your greatest contribution was easily keeping his wine glass topped off. He was beautiful, face flushed from the heat coming off the stove and from the alcohol, and you couldn’t help but poke his cheek, giggling at the disgruntled face gave you.
“Cute,” you told him, pinching his cheek gently.
“Stop distracting me and put the garlic bread in the oven.”
“Yes sir.”
Rolling his eyes at your reply, Isaac turned the eye under the pasta off and took the pot off to drain it over the sink. Before pouring, he took a clean mug out of the dish drainer and scooped out some of the water.
“What’s that for?”
“Always save pasta water for your sauce,” he answered, pouring the rest out.
Steam billowed up in his face and you laughed, “Nice facial I bet.”
“Felt great,” he deadpanned, turning back with the strainer full of spaghetti noodles.
Nodding enthusiastically, “I was gonna suggest face masks for tonight, but you might be fine without.”
“No,” he was quick to correct, “I still want a mask.”
Chuckling, you held your hands up, “Fine with me. We can put them on before the movie.”
“Thought we were going to eat while the movie is on.”
“No, I haven’t seen this one before so I want to give it my full focus.”
Isaac shrugged, used to your weird requests, and went back to focusing on the food. You hoped he would hurry, you were hungry and you didn’t want to drink anymore until you had some food in your system.
After what felt like forever, he flipped the stove off and pulled the garlic bread out of the oven. He handed you a plate, “Want to fix yours first?”
“No, you cooked, I’ll go second.”
Bending down, he pressed a kiss to your temple, and stepped away to start piling food onto his plate. You filled yours after and followed him over to the couch where he was sitting, waiting on you to start eating.
“You could’ve started.”
“Wanted to wait, it’s polite.”
You rolled your eyes, “Guess chivalry isn’t dead.”
“Damn straight.”
-
“Okay but you really do need moisturizer,” you told him after he dried his face post-mask.
“Skin feels fine,” he told you, stroking his cheek a few times.
You sighed, knocking his hand away, and rubbed moisturizer in, ignoring the face he made in response. When you finished, you grabbed the hand you’d knocked away and pulled him back to the couch to start the movie.
“Dishes?” Isaac asked, sounding a little worried.
“Later, I’m ready for the movie.”
“You’re going to fall asleep, wine makes you tired,” he warned.
“Never.”
You pushed him down first and tried to position him the way you wanted. After a few seconds, and some amused looks from Isaac, you sat down on the couch, leaning your back against his chest, both of you’s legs stretched out across the couch.
Isaac always ran warm, and you tilted your head, pressing the side of your face into his chest to see the TV. He huffed out a laugh, “Comfy?”
“Very. Can you hit play, pretty please?”
He did and the movie started. It wasn’t noticeable how tense he’d been when you first laid down, but as time ticked on and he got more into the movie, Isaac relaxed. One of his arms wrapped around your waist, fingers pushing your shirt up and stroking rhythmically over the exposed stripe of skin on your hip.
You couldn’t stop the shiver and his chest rumbled with a laugh. Grabbing the hem of his shirt, you tugged gently, wrinkling your nose at the image on screen, “Bet those fish smell bad.”
“Bet she smells bad.”
Pausing for a second to think, you said, “You know, that whole town gives onion vibes.”
“Onion vibes?”
“I feel like it reeks. Bad vibes equals onion smell.”
Isaac laughed, tilting his head down to brush a kiss across your hairline, “Can’t argue with that logic.”
“Furthermore,” you held a finger up to emphasize your point, and he snorted, “it feels musty right? Like I bet it feels damp.”
“Well it is covered in snow.”
“But like, humid almost. Dank, maybe?”
Humming, he answered, “I think I know what you mean.”
You watched as the main character convinced the kids to pay him to send their letters with a frown, “I’m not sure how...ethical that is.”
“The evils of a capitalist society,” he said, and you nodded, chin hitting his collarbone.
“Ouch,” you muttered, rubbing it. Isaac brushed over your chin gently as if to soothe the pain before he brought it back down to your hip.
His warmth combined with the blanket covering the two of you, the wine you’d drank, and the movie playing quietly in the background lulled you to sleep, just like Isaac predicted. The music startled you awake once, eyes fluttering as you watched the sleigh almost teeter off the edge of a cliff, but his rhythmic breathing knocked you back out.
It didn’t seem like much longer later when Isaac squeezed your hip playfully, waking you back up fully.
“Gotta do the dishes, sweetheart, let me up.”
Yawning, you reluctantly sat up, stretching, “I’ll help.”
“You can go to bed, I’ll be there in twenty.”
“No, you cooked, I’ll help.”
He chuckled as you stumbled, reaching for his hand in your half asleep state. The kitchen light woke you up fully when he flipped it on, and you blinked a few times, bumping your hip playfully into his when he took up all the space in front of the sink.
“I’ll wash, you dry,” he told you, handing over a dish towel.
“Fine.”
It took less than 20 minutes with both of you working, and he held his hands out for you to grab after turning the water off. You took them and let him pull you through the living room to your bedroom.
Pulling the covers back, both of you climbed into bed. He brushed some hair out of your face and kissed you gently, trailing his lips across your cheek to your forehead where he moved back to whisper, “Goodnight, lovely.”
Two: A Christmas Story
The weather was miserable and you felt so bad for dragging Isaac out in it. It wasn’t quite cold enough for snow, an unusual “warm” snap, but it was cold enough for the rain to leave a deep chill in your bones.
“Fuck,” he muttered, shivering, “we should get some coffee on the way home.”
“Yeah, something warm sounds fantastic right now.”
He drove to the nearest drive-thru near your apartment, and you cradled the latte to your chest as he drove the rest of the way home. The rain picked up as soon as he parked and you sighed, “Wanna run for it?”
Isaac nodded, “I guess. We can always change.”
Unfortunately, there were no close spots near your building, so both of you ran, splashing through puddles carelessly, just wanting to get out of the rain as fast as possible. He laughed at your disgruntled face, and you wrinkled your nose, “Gonna be miserable for the rest of the day.”
“You won’t. We’ll crank the heat up and watch a movie. Didn’t you have a list?”
“I do,” you brightened considerably, “we should watch A Christmas Story. It’s my dad’s favorite.”
“Deal.”
The inside of your apartment was dark and cold, and you flipped on a lamp, shivering. He walked to the thermostat, and you went to your room to dig through the drawers for clothes. Isaac walked in soon after you and you handed him a pair of his sweatpants and a sweater.
“Thanks,” he mumbled, starting to struggle with his wet jeans.
You snorted at his frustrated face, “Told you to just wear sweats.”
“Never,” he swore, “only in the comfort of my home.”
“Oh,” you teased, “you consider this home?”
“Of course,” he answered, eyes looking slightly watery, “you’re home.”
Your smile softened and you held your arms open for him to walk into. Squeezing you in a tight hug, Isaac buried his face into your hair. You mumbled, “Good, because you’re my home too.”
He pulled back and started shimmying out of his jeans again. You were finished changing way before he was and sat on the edge of your bed to wait. There was a furrow between his eyebrows as he finally kicked his jeans off, and you stood to grab the pile of wet clothes to wash.
“Start up my laptop and we can watch the movie,” you told him, pulling the door shut behind you in case your roommate was home.
You started the laundry and walked back to your room, sipping the latte you’d left in the kitchen on your way in. Isaac was scrolling through your movies when you walked back in the room, propped up against your pillows, blanket over his lap.
The rain had picked up again outside, beating against the window near your bed, and you sat down next to Isaac, his arm coming up to wrap around your shoulder.
“Ready?” he asked, hovering over the movie title.
“Born ready.”
Isaac hit play and you rested your head on his shoulder, legs crossed in front of you. You couldn’t drink your coffee at the angle your head was tilted against his shoulder, but you liked feeling him laugh too much to care if it was going cold.
His arm around your shoulder went limp as he fully relaxed into the movie. At the tire changing scene, Isaac snorted, “Well isn’t this relatable.”
Biting your lip, you winced, “Sorry.”
“All good, hon. Not upset, a little funny even.”
Taking a deep breath, you nodded, “If you say so.”
Isaac’s other hand dropped to hold yours that was closest to him, and you smiled as he brought it up to his face to kiss the back of it. You squeezed his hand and laced your fingers together.
“You know,” you interrupted, “hand holding is the most underrated way to show affection.”
He hummed, “I think I agree.”
“You like holding my hand?” you asked, cheeky smile on your face.
“I do.”
“Good. Now you’re obligated to keep holding my hand forever.”
“Forever, huh? You sure you want to keep me around that long?”
Untangling your hand from his, you held out your pinky, “Promise, bub.”
He linked his pinky with yours and shook it. Before you could say anything else, he tapped your nose, “Now hush, I’m trying to watch the movie.”
Scrunching your nose, you grabbed his hand again, “Don’t shush me.”
“I thought you wanted me to watch this.”
“I do.”
“You’re distracting me.”
You huffed, “Fine. Just rewind.”
Isaac snorted and did as you asked, leaning back against the pillows when he finished. Cuddling back into his side, you couldn’t help the little sigh of happiness that escaped.
Three: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Isaac had apparently been having trouble sleeping. It took you a few days to notice, but he came over for dinner one night and the bags under his eyes were incredibly pronounced.
“Hey, everything okay?”
He sighed, “Scott and Stiles went home so the apartment has been lonesome to say the least.”
“Bad dreams?” asking was a tossup, you were unsure whether he’d actually be forthcoming with the details he was usually so tight-lipped about.
You were unsure if it was because of the lack of sleep or he just decided to let you in, with a hum, he answered, “Yeah, this time of year isn’t the greatest. Everyone’s with their family and I’m just alone.”
Nodding, you held a hand out for him to take, “You know, one of my comfort movies is on the list of holiday movies, if you want to try it out.”
“I’d like that. I like learning about your comfort things, makes me feel closer to you.”
You smiled, “I’d like to learn more about yours someday.”
“You will,” he said so matter of factly that you believed him.
He let you pull him over to the couch and sat down normally, legs out in front of him. You put the movie in the DVD player and sat next to him, stretching your legs across his lap.
“You know,” you told him as the snowman started talking, “I kinda forgot what the fuck happens in this movie.”
“I thought it was your comfort movie.”
“It is. I watched it a lot as a kid with my sister.”
Looking thoughtful, he went quiet and started watching again.
“The island of misfit toys,” he said, chin resting on his hand, elbow propped on your shin, “kind of dark for a kids movie.”
You laughed, “Just wait.”
Not too much longer later, he flinched as Yukon fell over the cliff, “The fuck?!”
“It’s alright, Isaac,” you told him, reaching up to ruffle his hair.
Pouting, he slumped forward fully on your legs and pressed his head into your hand. You took the hint and started running your hand through it, scratching his scalp gently. His chin stayed resting on your shin as he finished the movie out.
“I can see why it’s your comfort movie. Happy ending, familiar tale, and a little bit of romance.”
“Yeah. My mom used to play it while we decorated the Christmas tree.”
“You’re a big traditions person, huh?”
“Definitely,” you confirmed, “something to look forward to.”
“My dad wasn’t around much,” Isaac confided, “and when he was, he was mean. I wish I had siblings, but my mom left before she could have another one.”
“Have you talked to your dad much since moving?”
His laugh was humorless, “Fortunately, no. I moved and I left for good. I have no interest in going back to Beacon Hills.”
“So that’s why you decided to stay, huh?”
“Rather stay here with you than go someplace to see people not worth my time.”
“Do you ever talk to your family members?”
“No. I don’t think I’ve ever really forgiven my mom for abandoning me, and my dad is a lost cause. I lived with a guy named Argent for a while after my dad kicked me out, but he’s been abroad since I left for school.”
“How’d you know him?”
“His daughter Allison was my good friend. She’s at school abroad.”
You paused your scratching and cradled his chin, turning his face to look at you, “So you’d go if they were still in Beacon Hills?”
Isaac frowned, “Maybe.”
“Family is important, no matter if it’s blood or not.”
“I guess that’s kind of a moral in Rudolph isn’t it.”
You laughed, “Yeah, I guess it is.”
He sat up and leaned forward to kiss you. When he pulled away, Isaac smiled, “Thanks for listening to me.”
“Thanks for opening up.”
Four: Elf
“Okay but how often do they have free drive-in,” you pleaded, “and it’s a Christmas movie, and they’re giving out eggnog.”
“Personally, not a huge fan of eggnog.”
“Hot chocolate too.”
He paused, “You might get me with the hot chocolate.”
You snorted, “Well, you don’t have much time to decide because it starts in two hours.”
Inhaling sharply, he stood, “Let’s go.”
“Yes!” you cheered, grabbing two blankets off the couch to bring for when he turned the car off.
“It’s going to be cold, sweetheart,” he warned, looking at your leggings and hoodie.
“Yeah, don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
“Mhmm,” he raised his eyebrows, “we’ll see if you say so in an hour.”
-
It was cold, and part of you didn’t want to admit how cold you were, but eventually the shivers won out and you smiled sheepishly at Isaac, “Can you turn the car on?”
“Nope,” he popped the p, “I did warn you.”
You pouted and he rolled his eyes, an amused look on his face. After a few seconds, he lifted the console up and slid across the seat, arm out for you to squeeze close.
“Thanks, bud,” you told him gratefully as the movie started.
“I think I have a sweater in the back seat,” he offered.
“Nah, it’ll be cold anyway.”
He nodded and wrapped the blanket around you, “Offer’s open.”
Isaac was a movie talker, not that you ever minded, you were too, but you could tell he really liked Elf because he barely spoke the whole time.
Leaning into his side warmed you up, and you watched silently, aimlessly playing with his hoodie strings.
“I know it’s not the most prominent theme in these holiday movies,” he said, “it seems that shit dads are pretty common. Like, Merry Christmas to you and all your daddy issues.”
“Oh my god,” you snorted, “I guess you’re not wrong. You elbowed him, “Merry Christmas to you and all your daddy issues.”
“Thanks, sweetheart,” he told you, kissing your cheek, “I’d rather be here with daddy issues than be in Beacon Hills with a dad.”
Clapping a hand over your mouth, you laughed loudly, “I’m not sure if that’s the truth, but I appreciate the sentiment.”
“It’s true. You do mean the most to me.”
Your eyes widened, “Wow, I love you too.”
Isaac’s cheeks turned red and he jumped in surprise at the sudden yelling on screen. You pinched his cheek, and the best way you could describe the look in his eyes was fond. He sighed, “I don’t-”
“Don’t worry,” you reassured, “I know.”
“You’re too good to me.”
“Too good? Nah. You deserve all the good things.”
“So,” he trailed off mischievously, “if I deserve good things, does that mean we can eat only from the four main food groups for the rest of the break?”
“What?” you were lost.
“Candy, candy canes, candy corn, and syrup.”
“Fuck no. I know that you’re joking because I think the lack of cooking would do you in, but I still can’t stand the thought.”
Isaac laughed, “No, I wouldn’t, but I do really like this one.”
“Good. More found family content.”
“It is a theme.”
“The best theme.”
“I know you aren’t the most fond of reading, but I have some books really heavy on found families that I think you’d really like.”
It wasn’t the first time Isaac had recommended you books before, and you hadn’t ever taken them, but you’d thought, with all the opening up he’d been doing, the least you could do was take a suggestion.
“Give me a list, I’ll check some out.”
He smiled softly at you and squeezed your hand, “I will.”
Plus One: Home Alone
Isaac stumbled out of the Uber, and waited for you to climb out, “Come on, babe,” he slurred when you took a few seconds.
“Coming, can’t find my phone,” you told him, patting around the backseat.
“I’ve got it in my pocket,” he told you.
“Oh, shit, okay.”
He threw an arm around you and the two of you walked toward his apartment, “Fucking hell, they spiked the fuck out of that cider.”
You giggled, “To be fair, we both had a lot.”
“We did.” Isaac fumbled with the keys and managed to get his door unlocked after a minute of missing the keyhole. He grinned proudly, “Let’s fucking go.”
“Wow, a genius,” you mocked and he rolled his eyes.
“Just go change so we can watch a movie.”
Luckily, you and Isaac were both floor people when drunk. You went into his bathroom to take off all your makeup and change, and by the time you finished, he was flipping through TV channels and laying on a pile of blankets and pillows on the floor.
“ABC Family probably has a movie on.”
And when he managed to find the channel, Home Alone was playing. Isaac squinted at it, “I think I’ve seen this one.”
“It’s my favorite,” you gushed.
“We’ll watch it then. Lemme go change.”
Isaac left and you slumped back on the blankets, eyes shutting a few times as a wave of tiredness hit you. On screen Kevin screamed, and you jumped, waking up fully as Isaac flopped down next to you.
He laughed, “Comfy?”
“Could be better,” you answered, pulling at him until you could lay your head on his chest. He laughed and you tossed a leg over his. When you finally stopped squirming, you poked his chest, “Now I’m good.”
“What if I’m not comfy?”
“Tough.”
Isaac snorted, “I guess I’ll just deal.”
“Thanks for your service, bro.”
He focused on the screen, “How are these assholes not dead?”
You blinked a few times, trying to focus, “I don’t know actually. Like I would’ve just wanted to die after a certain amount of pain, right?”
“Head on fire? I’m noping right out of that. Fuck the houses.”
“Absolutely, hit me on the head with an iron and I’m gone.”
Isaac laughed, “Weak pain tolerance for the win.”
He picked up his hand and held it up limply, you picked yours up to high five him. It was sloppy and you missed most of his hand, but he grabbed it and refused to let it go. Kissing it sloppily, you smiled at him.
“Sap,” you teased.
“Only for you, of course.”
“Of course, I’d hope so.”
He fell asleep pretty soon after, and you took a minute to reflect. For a while into your relationship, Isaac refused to sleep over. You weren’t sure why, and it kind of hurt your feelings at the start. Eventually he did, but he always waited until you fell asleep first.
Home Alone played in the background softly as he slept, eyelashes fluttering, and you smiled at him. You traced over his cheekbones and across his brow bone, pausing when he made a face before tapping his nose.
“Stop,” he mumbled.
“No.”
You pulled him closer and entwined your legs with his. He huffed, “What if I have to pee.”
“Hold it, I’m trapping you here.”
“You can’t trap me, I’m bigger than you.”
“You can carry me if you must.”
He hummed, “Fine. Hopefully I don’t drop you.”
“You won’t,” you told him, confidently.
“Oh yeah, you trust me that much?”
“Mhmm, obviously,” you tapped his lip.
Nipping at your fingers, he laughed, “Why?”
“Because you love me, you wouldn’t hurt me.”
He froze under your fingertips, and you stayed quiet to let him work through it. Tracing mindlessly, you smiled at him, his brows furrowed.
“I do,” he spoke eventually, “I do love you.”
Your eyes filled up and you bit your lip, “Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
“Good, because I love you too.”
“Good.”

Usual let’s-ignore-finale’verse, pre-relationship, PG-ish (Lucy is miserable but somehow swears LESS than I usually write her), and also on ao3.
cuddling out of necessity
This has got to be a level of hell.
January 29, 1881, somewhere in… honestly Lucy does not knowwhat state they are in, or where they parked, or why exactly she needed to tagalong on this little excursion to several days before one of the worst weatherevents in US history. She has never seen this much snow in her life, and on topof everything else the group has gotten separated as per usual and that meansshe is, also as usual, stuck with the only person on the team who apparently hateswinter more than she does.
When she figured this out, a few months ago, it was kindafunny. Her own cold-weather aversion can be blamed on her physical buildcombined with the fact that she grew up in California – fluffy white bullshithas always been a novelty for her at best, and she’s had no baseline for howthat’s changed since the whole time-travel complication led to her being forcedthrough all the weather-related hangups a person could ever have. Flynn,on the other hand is… well, Lucy is trying not to think about his body morethan she has to, but she’s got eyes and he is A Lot. Sufficient to say, wayless likely to get frostbite in some awkward place. And he’s lived a far moreadventurous life than she has, and-
“Get over here,” he growls, snapping her back to the physicalsurroundings of her anxiety spiral. Yep. She’s trying not to think about any ofthat more than she has to.
The entire upper Midwest may be covered in several feet offrozen misery, and the entire fate of Western civilization may or may not rideon whether Wyatt can successfully fake a Norwegian accent this time (Lucy istrying not to think about that either), but at least they have managed to getthe equivalent of a hotel room. This is why she gets stuck with Flynn, becauseout of all the possible combinations they are least likely to kill each otherwhile pretending to be married. She trusts him enough to know he won’t doanything more than hold her hand to make their disguise convincing, and hetrusts her enough to know she probably won’t stab him in his sleep. The bar isset so low.
But more than that, this pattern is becoming a comfort toher. Even if it is a best-case-scenario of a lie, she can see how he’d be adecent husband to… someone. Not her, her brain makes very clear, she does notthink about that man in that way, she does not-
“You’re going to freeze.”
A bit ago, whenever they’d gotten up here – Lucy’s sense oftime has been a little off on this mission, the lack of normal outside visualcues is throwing her off – she’d decided she’s sleeping on the floor this time.Normally he does, gentlemanly instincts distracting from the fact that thefurther back in time they are the less likely a hotel bed is going to becomfortable for all six-foot-whatever of him, but they are in a time and placewhere furniture is designed for nice Scandinavian farm boys and that’s adifferent situation than usual and-
“I’m fine.”
“You look… not fine,” he says too slowly, like he is tryingto be tactful and clearly having a time of it.
“I don’t-“
“Lucy.” He says her name different than anyone else everdoes, like it’s both blessing and curse, and she’d hate him for it if it wasn’talso somehow really hot. (Yeah. She is avoiding a lot right now.) “Do youtrust me?”
She rolls her eyes. “I’m voluntarily alone with you. Is thatenough?”
That part is maybe the most normal thing going on here, shehas to admit. Back home – in the space that is not fully home yet, the newsafehouse that will eventually stand within daytrip distance of wherever thehell they are right now – she hangs out in his room more than she’d happilyadmit if anyone asked. It’s quiet. Other people leave her alone when she’s upthere. He somehow found an overstuffed armchair and she’s spent a few nightscurled up in it, always woken up with a quilt draped over her and coffeewaiting. It’s enough to make a lesser woman develop a bit of a crush.
“Then get up here.” Not quite a command but damn close. “Youknow how important body heat is.”
Yes, and she’s done everything in her power to avoid thatsituation with him, but here they are. Might as well.
When she was planning to sleep on the floor, sleeping in allher clothes had sounded like a good idea, but it’ll be a different situation ona questionable mattress with a body twice her size curled up around hers. She undoesher outer dress with about as much gracefulness as she can manage, then hercorset, except it’s stuck, this is what she gets for thinking she can do this onher own, she-
She’s unsurprised he’s behind her, undoing the knot in thelaces before she even had the chance to ask.
“Thank you,” she murmurs, turning to face him now that thedifficult garment is off her body. Chemise and several petticoats will keep herwarm enough, even if the former is a little see-through in current light, and-
“Make yourself comfortable,” he says, motioning to the bed. “I’llfit where you don’t.”
Lucy is half tempted to point out that given the sizedifference this really should be done the other way around, but on the otherhand he’s being legitimately sweet and that’s both too normal and uncommonenough to make her feel weird and-
Yep. Questionable is not enough of a word for this mattress.It is at least above the ground and may have been soft at some point in itsexistence, and there is a blanket pile waiting, and-
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable,” which is a phrasehe absolutely should not say with his lips that close to her ear but she’s notin the mood to call him out. “Say something if-“
“You’re fine.” She lets him wrap around her from behind,lets his arms encircle her waist. Almost sweet, really. Nothing for her to bescared of.
And honestly, she hasn’t been this close to another humanbeing since her bad-life-choice spiral of about a year ago now, and it is veryeasy to let herself want. To be small and to be held, and to know that she willbe safe. Flynn does not run as warm as one might expect from looking at him,but his size more than makes up for it, and the blankets carefully draped formore coverage on her side will protect the rest. This is, for their circumstances,as good as it’ll get.
She lets herself have this. Warmth without too much skin onskin, awareness of what lines they are not ready to cross. She’s not sure ifthe heartbeat kiss on the side of her head is even real, but the sound of hisvoice on her neck is harder to ignore.
“You can rest,” he murmurs. “It’s alright.”
She closes her eyes and tries to believe.

BB: welcome back everyone! So good to see you all here today! We're back for a 3rd time here on BB Channel! Like before we're joined by the lil cuties of Ed and Mari. But this time their parents have come to join!
Rex: hello...
Quetz: Hola!
BB: that wasn't a very strong greeting Rex!
Rex: I'm tired right now. Can't this wait?
BB: time waits for no one and neither does BB!
Mari: already this is super annoying! *sigh* so why'd you decide to bring them into this anyways?
BB: the people who follow this blog need to see how they're doing so long after Chaldea too! You two have had the spotlight for a while, so now you should share.
Ed: I mean... guess that's fair.
Mari: should anyone be dealing with this?
Rex: I'd rather not be here either.
BB: aaaww, don't be like that! This will be fun!
Quetz: that's a very hard sell BB.
BB: just humor me at least.
Rex: ...fine
Quetz: what are we even doing anyways?
BB: some of your interdimensional buds have sent in questions about how you guys are doing, and I'm here to get those answers for them!
Quetz: that actually sounds nice...
BB: what'd I tell ya!?
Rex: yeah yeah, pls get started.
BB: fine. First few are from my precious bombardier beetle! First one she asks: do you have any pets?
Mari: oof! Do we!
Rex: currently we have four dogs: 1 German Shepherd named King, a Pitbull named Sparks, a Dogo Argentino named Duke, and a Corgi named Marshmallow.
Quetz: but also we have a habit of adopting older dogs who aren't likely to get a home because of their age or rescues to give them a nice place to stay.
BB: aaawww, well ain't that wholesome?
Mari: we also have mom's bigass pterosaur!
BB: less wholesome. Next one from my dear yellowjacket: favorite foods?
Rex: PIZZA!
Mari: CAKE!
BB: whoa! Pump the brakes you two! No need to get too excited!
Quetz: ...honestly? I don't really have a favorite food. Just a bunch I like to eat and some I don't. If I had to choose, I'd say chocolate.
Ed: I'm a steak man myself.
BB: 2 sweets, and 2 savories. Next up! Who wakes up earliest?
Rex: Quetz
Ed and Mari: Mom
Quetz: ...I guess it's me... hehehe.
BB: honestly I'm not surprised. She's so damn athletic and even used to be a professional.
BB: next! Where do you all like to go for vacations and such?
Ed: mom and dad have a vacation home in Alaska.
BB: Alaska?! Why?
Mari: when warm weather is the norm for you it's nice to go to the cold to change things up.
Rex: yeah, it's actually very nice. Not too many people and beautiful nature sights.
BB: well to each their own. Another from my dear antlion: how long does it take to pick a movie or TV show to watch?
Quetz: hehehe, we're all so indecisive it takes ages to pick. It's not uncommon for us to give up after taking so long.
BB: you should work on that. This next one's interesting. My precious army ant also suggests a round of common household jobs and the like from each member.
Rex: hmmm
BB: she gave an example of like, who does the cooking?
Quetz: well it's both me and mi amor in that case. The kids aren't very creative.
Ed: hey! We're plenty creative!
Mari: no we're not, don't lie.
Rex: we only really ask that the kids clean their rooms and any messes they make. We handle most everything else.
BB: they should really show some independence tho. Can't coddle them forever.
BB: in the next one, Cadence asks about a house tour and if there's a jacuzzi.
Quetz: a house tour feels like it should be it's own thing.
Rex: yeah, but we do have a jacuzzi dude, so don't worry.
BB: next one's from Reen: she asks what would life be if you weren't in chaldea,
Rex: y'mean like now? I mean... it's a relatively normalish domestic life? With less work tho.
Quetz: si, I've made plenty from my lucha career before retirement we don't have to worry about money much. But mi amof still makes money just in case.
BB: well after that she asks: how was your life before and after meeting each other?
Rex: ...kinda sad. Aside from chaldea and saving the world, I was kinda just... stagnant. Go to work, go home and so on. Not much to my life before then.
Quetz: ...honestly, for me it was the same. After the age of Gods ended we didn't do much of anything. We mostly watched over humanity, I've been summoned in modern day before but that was rare and infrequent.
Rex: ...after I met Quetz tho... I dunno things felt... better? She kinda forced her way into my life after I summoned her and... I was more then ok to accept her... before long we had something beautiful...
Quetz: aww, mi amor! I'm so happy to hear that!
BB: ain't that sweet? Like me and my dear centipede. Final one from Reen: if you could build a dream home then where? (Can be in fantasy)
Rex: I mean... where we are now is good.
Mari: yeah, right at the border of a huge rainforest in the Yucatan sounds fine.
Ed: but what about the fantasy bit?
Quetz: hmmm... we don't really look at fantasy much. But maybe a castle of some kind?
Rex: or a Mayan temple? But with electricity and Wi-Fi.
BB: that's fair. Need those memes in your life. Now some from Kaz! First she asks: what kind of gifts do you give each other?
Rex: uuhh, well I like getting mi corazon custom things. Like some personal clothes, or even a portrait of the two of us.
Quetz: ehehehe, I like to spoil mi amor with extravagant things! Golden treasure and the like!
Mari: concerning...
BB: next, how would you spend the day if it's raining outside?
Rex: I actually enjoy rainy weather, so I like to chill near a window or even on the porch listening to the rain.
Mari: it's very soothing.
BB: how quaint. Last one from Kaz: whose good at cooking and baking?
Quetz: hehehe, that'd be me. Tho it might be considered cheating since I use my goddess power to help.
Mari: well no one else is the greatest normally so it's fine.
BB: a good 'ol better then nothing kinda attitude! Now we're back to Cadence but with more relaxed questions: what's the current house look like?
Rex: ....big.
Mari: like three stories tall with a DEEP basement.
Ed: like... 5 rooms too many.
Quetz: we also have an indoor pool.
Rex: the outside looks almost gothic, but partially taken over by nature.
BB: all this near a rainforest?
Quetz: si! Despite the size, all the nearby trees still tower over it.
BB: nature can get scary. I've seen worse and have been worse but still. Another one: how do family events function? Any specific holidays?
Quetz: ...most family events are just us... going somewhere nice to eat nice food...
Rex: do they mean bringing extended family? My family lives too far to visit often
Quetz: ...and I'd rather not speak of mine... things have gotten rocky as of late.
Mari: right, well for holidays we celebrate most standard one, like Easter and valentine's and such. For October we kinda try to combine Halloween and Day of the dead.
Ed: but Christmas is the most important for us! Mom and Dad always make the biggest celebrations for Christmas!
BB: gotta love the holidays! Especially when your mom is santa... still weird to say that. Next one! Any plans for the future?
Rex: eh... not really? I mean I want to prepare Maria to continue the family magecraft, since Ed has no interest.
Mari: someone has to continue on this lost practice.
BB: good to know it won't be lost to time like we thought. Next one! Daily life?
Rex: I wake up, eat, work on magecraft, spend family time, spend time with Quetz, go to bed.
Quetz: I wake up, workout, eat, workout, spend time with mi familia, lovely time with mi amor and then I sleep.
Ed: I wake up, take a walk, eat, practice soccer, spend family time, sleep.
Mari: sleep, sleep again, dragged to breakfast by mom, eat, eat again, mess with magecraft, eat, sit with everyone else, scroll thru my phone for hours, sleep.
Quetz: *sigh* mija, you need to change your priorities.
Mari: mmmmm... No.
BB: bad habits there Mari. Next they'd like to know if your in contact with anyone from chaldea? Other then me!
Rex: here's a real quick list: Marie, Mash, Kiara, Penth, Astraea, Martha, Ishtar, Gorgon, Jalter, The twins, your kids BB, etc etc.
Quetz: too many to list...
BB: nice you haven't lost contact! Next! About that Wedding?
Rex: well... it was eventful to say the least. Not long after completing the china LB. Most of the servants were invited, and most of Quetz's family showed up.
Quetz: si, Martha officiated it for us. Most of my family were so nice at the time... too bad that hasn't lasted.
Rex: let's not mention that...
BB: it was such a nice wedding! You two were so "nervous" you had trouble with your vows! How adorable!
Mari: why the quotes?
BB: no reason... now we're at the home stretch! Good 'ol Ash has some for stuff that technically hasn't happened yet, but you should still be able to answer! What responsibilities will Rex take on when he joins the pantheon?
Quetz: ...well he'll be largely a guardian of life on earth. Authority over things like the jungle itself, volcanos, and even snow... for some reason.
Rex: well it still snows in mexico... occasionally.
Quetz: and we'll be sharing authority over Venus! I wanted to share it with mi amor!
BB: cute! Hmmm, not sure if you cananswer this one just yet? Adjusting to God hood?
Rex: well I got to try it out a bit. Summoning lava and snow is... interesting. But also... my mind felt... odd... but also clearer? Not sure how to put it...
BB: I'm sure when you get there you'll get it... took me a bit after servant fest. And how did the other divinities react?
BB: actually I have some recordings of that to answer, so play the clip!
A screen appears showing recordings of some servants, one at a time.
Ishtar: eh! She's turning you into a god!? ...I guess you've earned it master...
Eresh: what!? Can you do that?! ...guess I won't see you in Kur... then again I don't think you have any link to Kur anyways.
Kama: do you really think your cut out for it? I mean... if it's just for you two to be together then I guess it's fine.
Astraea: godhood is a very big responsibility master. Are you certain you're up to it? Saving humanity is also a big task but at least that has an end point. This is... eternal.
Qin: oh! So you have decided to go for immortality after all?! Tho not the same as my methods, it is still good to see you two will be happy together!
Scathach: immortality? I've strived for death for so long... to see you go for immortality... Hopefully you'll find happiness, where I couldn't...
The screen turns off.
BB: very interesting! Most seem hesitant of it all... I for one think it's cute! Imagine in a thousand years you guys have a double date with me and my dear stag beetle!
Rex: ...a thousand years...
Quetz: still having trouble processing it all?
Rex: yeah... maybe when I get there... it'll be easier.
BB: now for today's final one! A scenario! One of you two goes berserk! What does the other do to calm them down?
Rex: well that has happened before... usually a nice hug is more then good enough.
Quetz: si! I've almost destroyed a few servants a few times until mi amor caught me in a hug! I can't bring myself to harm him... so I stop!
BB: sounds too easy... but I've seen that before so... I'll let it slide.
BB: well that's all the time we have for now! Hopefully you all are satisfied by the answers! We'll be doing this again, seeya!
Screen cuts out, the show's over.

“You’re Cold.” (So Let’s Cuddle)
@tdbkweek21 / Entry 1: Cuddly/Handsy
Pairing: Todobaku Warnings/Tags: Cursing, Pre-Relationship Word Count: 991
A/N: So, here’s my first entry! I’m pretty excited to share all of these with you guys! <3 Hope you enjoy ^^
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Goddammit!" Bakugou growls as he stares out the window, wishing for a moment that he could gain another quirk and melt all the quickly falling snow outside.
"I know," Todoroki says softly, frowning as the snow piles higher and higher outside. "This will make our mission a bit more difficult."
Bakugou rolls his eyes. "A bit? Yeah, sure. Even with your quirk, it'll be hard finding the villains' hideout once this calms down."
Todoroki hums and moves back, going over to the fireplace and inspecting what supplies they have. When he checked the weather before this mission, there had been no warning of any kind of storm, much less a blizzard in the middle of March, so they hadn't thought to gather wood beyond what the cabin already had stocked.
After a quick assessment, he looks back up to see Bakugou still glaring out the window. "Glaring at the storm won't make it end any faster, you know."
Bakugou whips around to glare at him instead, Todoroki looking at him impassively, raising a single eyebrow. Bakugou growls and stomps away from the window, throwing himself down onto the couch. "I know that, IcyHot."
"Hm. Well, we should have enough firewood to last us a little while, but I doubt it'll be enough to stay warm the remainder of the mission."
Bakugou grunts in response, pulling out his phone and scrolling through the texts he received that day. There's quite a few expressing concern about the blizzard, guess they found out due to the news or something.
While he's assuring them that they've got everything under control, Todoroki's doing the same with his group of friends. After they're done doing that, they eventually settle on watching a movie since they're not going to be leaving the cabin any time soon.
Around halfway through the movie, Todoroki glances over at Bakugou. He always has the best reactions if you know how to read him, so Todoroki's merely curious about what he thinks of the movie. But he notices something that makes him frown slightly.
Bakugou's shivering. It's not much and it wouldn't be noticeable if they weren't on the same couch, but it's there.
Todoroki himself doesn't feel that cold, though he's not surprised that the other is. He's used to adjusting his internal temperature without thinking as a side effect of his quirk. It's second nature to him at this point. But Bakugou doesn't have that luxury…
"What?"
Todoroki blinks at the question, realizing that Bakugou's looking at him now. "Huh?"
"You were staring at me, idiot. What is it?" Bakugou crosses his arms, a fairly common gesture for him, but Todoroki doesn't miss the way he's slightly rubbing his arms.
"You're cold." It's not a question. Not when it's so obvious to him.
"What? No, I'm not!" Bakugou's eyes look around and Todoroki huffs softly, scooting a bit closer to Bakugou.
"Yes. You are. Stop denying it." Todoroki narrows his eyes at Bakugou, honestly wishing he'd just give in already. Why protest something that's so obviously true?
His only response is a quiet growl. Todoroki raises an eyebrow and Bakugou scowls at him, though it's honestly closer to a pout than a true scowl. "Fine. I am cold. What of it? There's a damn blizzard outside! It'd be weird if I weren't cold."
"Mm, true," Todoroki says, scooting even closer to him and pressing his left arm against Bakugou's right. He subtly activates his quirk enough to send a soothing wave of heat over the two of them and Bakugou lets out a soft sigh, almost slumping against Todoroki's side.
"Fuck. Why weren't you doing that earlier?" He asks, fighting the urge to curl into Todoroki's side and bask in the warmth.
"I assumed that if you were cold you would say something, but I forgot who I'm dealing with," Todoroki says with a wry smile. "Mr. I'd Rather Explode Than Emote in Front of Other People."
Bakugou growls and Todoroki chuckles softly, the sound dampening Bakugou's annoyance like water putting out a fire. "You're one to talk. So can we go back to watching the movie now?"
Todoroki glances at the screen and something in him melts when he realized that Bakugou paused it when he was spacing out earlier, clearly wanting to watch it together. "Yeah."
During the second half of the movie, Todoroki shifts to have his arm around Bakugou, his face heating up a little at the gesture. Bakugou cuddles into him, though he'd deny it if anyone asked. Obviously, he'd want to be near the source of heat. No other motives here whatsoever, no way.
As the credits roll across the screen, Todoroki looks down at Bakugou, melting a little when he realizes that Bakugou is asleep holding onto him like he's a stuffed animal. He glances at his phone for the time and nods to himself, turning the TV off and shifting a bit to lift Bakugou into his arms, shushing him softly when he grumbles some.
"Come on, darling. Let's get you to bed." Todoroki mumbles softly, carrying Bakugou into his bedroom. They did have two for this trip, but if he puts Bakugou in his own bedroom, he'll just get cold again and come seek out the warmth. And he really can't deny that he'd regret missing a chance to cuddle Bakugou.
Todoroki tucks him in before going to get ready for bed, sliding in and pulling Bakugou into his arms. "Goodnight, Bakugou," Todoroki says softly, hesitating for a moment before kissing Bakugou's forehead softly, thinking him too deeply asleep to notice.
Once Todoroki falls asleep, Bakugou shifts some to brush his thumb over Todoroki's cheek, his heart still pounding from the way Todoroki called him 'darling.' They definitely need to have a talk, but for once, Bakugou's not quite so sure that Todoroki will reject him. And that thought alone sends him into the sweetest sleep he's had in quite some time.
Hi! Could I request literally anything Whittaker!Master please?!
Also justt want to say that I love you’re writing and that you’re incredible 💕 have a great day
Aaaaaw, that's so nice of you! Thank you so much. At one point, I thought about stopping writing altogether, but you proved me wrong. Unfortunately, this took me longer than I thought (I was out of writing and fandom), but I hope you enjoy it. This is my present for you on my birthday :)
Dealing with the Devil
---------------------------------------------------
Another morning of another day. A normal morning. That's an odd word for you, considering you've been traveling with the Doctor, but not anymore. You'll have to get used to this word, to a new lifestyle and daily routine.
You didn't have an argument with a time traveler. You just outgrown these endless adventures. Of course, travel in time and space is wonderful, but it seems you're tired of constant stress, concern, anxiety, waiting for danger. From this point of view, it's not as exciting as it used to be.
Besides, you're tired of helping people all the time, risking your own life. Sometimes people have to overcome difficulties and let them save themselves. Maybe you've become more selfish over the years, but no one is perfect, so you weren't too worried.
The day was clear, almost cloudless, with no bright sun. Peace and tranquility. At such moments, you liked to go to a cafe, take your time, drink coffee with a bun in a pleasant and cozy atmosphere. In addition, it was where you made friends for the first time with a girl who works in cafe and is not associated with traveling in a blue police box. For that, you appreciated this place even more.
When you arrived at the cafe, waiting in line, you met the eyes of Lucy, your friend, who greeted you, but somehow without emotions, which wasn't like herself. Maybe she was just tired. Or was it just the morning? It's only 9 am.
You decided to look around for now. In the farthest corner on the right sat a man with an orange cap, typing something on a computer. And in the middle sat a lady in a big black hat, looking out of the window and holding a cup in both hands.
When your turn finally came, you ordered everything as usual, namely coffee with a croissant. You tried to start a conversation with Lucy while your coffee was being made, but nothing much came of it. Your friend didn't answer much, just smiled.
Everything would have been fine, but something was clearly wrong. Your instincts told you that and one thing you've learned from your adventures with the Doctor is that you can't ignore your instincts.
Your friend were just smiling, nothing suspicious or strange, but for some reason you felt uneasy, your back went all goosebumps. And you couldn't explain why.
'Please, Y/N, stop. Why do you always have to think about the bad things? It just seemed to you, stop looking for a catch' you thought. And it was true. What makes you think you're a trouble magnet and not the Doctor? The answer is obvious, isn't it?
After receiving your order, you sat down at a table and sipped some coffee, which was as always delicious. Well, the robot definitely couldn't make such a divine drink. So all your previous doubts were disappeared, dissolved in a fog of pleasure.
But something inside you said it was worth coming here tomorrow. God knows why. Maybe the coffee was so good or something else...
The next morning. The weather got a little worse, but that didn't spoil your mood. You were lucky to have two days off in a row. You didn't have to get up early and do anything special.
This time you were late - you left the house at 11 am. It was because first you decided to stay in bed and not get up, then you took a long time to get ready, and then you went to the cafe on foot, and not by bus as usual.
Once inside, you took a couple of steps forward and looked at the entire cafe, out of old habit. It was just like yesterday. Nothing changed. Also noisy and cozy, Lucy with a cold face, all the same people at the tables - at the farthest corner man with a computer and an orange cap, and in the middle a lady in a big black hat... Stop! Nothing changed at all! You have a photographic memory for faces.
'Okay, that's weird. Should I leave? Yeah, I think it's a good idea' you couldn't help but agree with your voice of reason and calmly, behaving completely normal, turned around and headed for the door...
But unfortunately, you didn't have time to get out - you ran into some big man. You were hoping you could get off with a quick excuse and sneak out, but he grabbed you by forearms hard, spun you around and pushed you forward a little. Everyone in the cafe looked at you with cold, unfeeling eyes, like robots.
At that moment, you had no doubt that something was wrong. Why do these things happen to you? Maybe it was a new version of Cybermen with invisible armor? Or Daleks masquerading as humans? If only the Doctor would arrive here, as usual, at the right moment...
"Oh, don't worry, I did everything I could to keep him out of our way" oh no, it was even worse than the Daleks and Cybermen put together. You knew exactly who said that. How could you not notice her blonde head and smug grin with red lips? Right now, you were just cursing yourself with every possible word and wanting to sink through the ground.
"Master..." you said it through clenched teeth, almost growling her name, which makes you weak, defenseless and annoyed you. And surely, the blonde grinned even wider, showing snow-white teeth.
"It's nice to know you haven't forgotten me yet, sweetheart" now the Master stood in front of you with all her arrogant majesty. She was watching you closely, waiting for your reaction. Her gaze seemed to look into your soul and ignite something in you, thus adding fuel to the fire.
"Don't call me like you and I are old friends" you barely restrained your anger, not to spoil a difficult situation, from which you still need to somehow get out. At least alive...
"Aren't we?" the Time Lady was feigning surprise. "Didn't you enjoy our moments together?" her lower lip pushed forward, as if offended, though you didn't even need to know the Master to know she was secretly exulting.
Not to say that you didn't stay alone with her, but the Master certainly didn't show any special interest in you. Just as a Doctor's companion, that's all. At least, that was what you thought.
You chose not to answer her question. It wasn't even you didn't want to please her. You just didn't know the answer to it. The blonde just gave you a toothy smile. She was having too much fun. You couldn't even remember when she was like this.
"What do you want from me?" you had enough of this. The sooner you found out what this arrogant Time Lady wanted, the sooner you'd turn her down and maybe be able to return home. Although knowing the Master, the last one was unlikely.
She walked around you like a snake encircling its prey and, standing behind you, whispered in your ear:
"An offer you can't refuse. But before I tell you about it, I suggest you sit down" the blonde pointed to the table with her hand. You didn't have much of choice: anyway, you'd end up at that damned table and listen to her. Voluntarily or by force.
So you reluctantly sat down at the table. A few moments later, the Master was sitting across from you. You tried to read her face to see what she was going to offer, but you couldn't. But you noticed something else.
The Master behaved somehow differently. Well, arrogant as always. Well, Time 'What is personal space?' Lady. But there was something else and it was eluding you, but it was clearly bothering you... Why did it bother you at all?
"What's the deal?" to be honest, you were really curious to know. Of course, your answer would remain unchanged in any case, but what exactly prompted the Time Lady to come to you and not just to annoy the Doctor.
"You can travel with me" she said, perfectly casually and serenely, glancing at her fingernails.
On the opposite, you were like being struck by lightning. Wow! Were we really talking about the same time traveler? Because it didn't really look like a Master.
Usually, she always laughs at the whole thing about companionship. But here we were, Master asking you to travel with her. Well, that was something you definitely couldn't predict. And what should you do in this situation?
"Do you want me to be your companion? Why?" there was a clear surprise in your voice, but you didn't try to hide it (her suggestion affected you so much). You could even feel your eyebrow go up and not down.
"I would say a partner. And to answer your question, why not? Not only the Doctor can have companions. Besides, he doesn't suit you at all" if that was even possible, your eyes widened even more. The second eyebrow rose to the first at the top. "You're more like me..."
Ha! A nervous laugh escaped from your throat. This was already out of the realm of science fiction. If you're impulsive and don't control your emotions well, that doesn't make you a psycho killer.
"That's not true!" you leaned back from the table, arms crossed defensively, and your nose wrinkled in displeasure.
The blonde looked up at you with her hazel eyes which glittered with mischief and pleasure. She got up from her chair, obviously coming up with something. The Time Lady came and stood behind you, her heels clacked on the floor with each step.
"Then tell me, why don't you care about these people?" the Master leaned toward you, her velvety voice sounding in your ear, like the devil was whispering in your ear. "If you did, you'd immediately ask what is wrong with them or beg me to fix them."
You turned your back on the Master and particularly on the people in the cafe. As much as you hate to accept it, she was right. Not to say that you didn't care about them, but now you were trying to get yourself out of this situation. You are not the Doctor, who can save everyone (or many people). You're only human, and of course, if you can save these people, you certainly won't mind.
"I'm still waiting for an answer. I hope you understand that otherwise these people will die, right?" well, of course, how can you do without blackmail? Now you understand very well the Doctor who has to make difficult decisions in such moments. That sucks, actually.
It's strange, but somehow you wanted to say 'no' even more than before. Not only to annoy the Master, but something told you that she wouldn't kill these people. Something has clearly happened to the smug Time Lady, something beyond your comprehension... For now.
And what if... It's very risky and may cost you dearly, but you had to try. What if it works? Actually, two can play this game, can't they?
"No" it's a good thing the blonde was standing right in front of you now, so you could see her really surprised face. It's worth a lot.
There was a grin on your face, which certainly couldn't please the Master. And it wasn't even followed by any weapons pointed at you or anyone nearby and that confirmed your assumption.
"What?"
"No" you repeated, getting up from your chair and slowly making your way back to the exit. "I am not the Doctor, who falls for your provocations. I'm not their savior and certainly not a babysitter," you pointed to the cafe visitors. "It was nice chatting, bye!"
You turned around and walked confidently and quickly to the door. Maybe you could still get home before the Master came to her senses. Although you certainly couldn't anywhere in the universe (and even more on Earth) hide from her...
But by the Murphy's law, things didn't go the way you planned or wanted them to. Just before you raised your hand to the doorhandle, you heard a soft, but definitely unexpected word:
"Please" if you didn't know the Master, you would have said her voice trembled.
You were supposed to keep going to the door, just keep going and get out of here. But your feet betrayed you. They just stopped and refused to go.
'It must be some trick or I just imagined it... Anything, but it can't be true' but that thought didn't stop you from turning around and asking:
"What?"
"Isn't that a word you say when you want something?" even from where you were, you could feel the irritation and... embarrassment? Your surprise was boundless.
"Yes, but I'm just surprised. This is the first time I've heard you say that"
Apparently, your mind was too clouded by emotions, because you really started to consider the offer. Your heart skipped a beat and you felt sorry for the Master. You never thought about it, but she doesn't have anyone. No one deserves such fate, not even the most dangerous person in the Universe.
"Fine..." surprisingly, the word just came out of you as if you had replayed this situation hundred times.
Before you got it, the blonde had already closed the distance, grabbed your arm and led you with quick steps to the TARDIS, which you just noticed. After all, the Master had the chameleon circuit working.
Before you put your foot in the time machine, you pulled your hand away. You had something to say. If the Time Lady wanted to travel with you, it would be on your terms. Well, as far as it was possible.
"But I have two conditions: first, no killing, I hate it" you didn't really believe that the Master would be able to contain it. But at least, in most cases. And that was worth something.
"You ruined all the fun..." the blonde rolled her eyes, but didn't respond further.
"What did you want from the Doctor's companion?" a smug grin appeared on your face, and the Master couldn't but just grin. "Second, bring these people back to normal."
Apparently, the Master assumed you would forget about them, because she snorted with displeasure, disappointed with your request. But she kept her word - after a snap of her fingers, all the people in the cafe seemed to wake up from a dream and began to look around, not understanding what had just happened.
The next thing you got, you were in the Master's TARDIS. And this is where a new chapter in your life begins. It probably won't end well, but who cares? You were willing to take the risk. Maybe this will be the best period in your life...
how to write a horror/mystery/gothic novel that takes place in Washington State:
General:
Kent is a shithole, no one goes to Seattle unless they absolutely have to, the beaches are not for swimming really it’s almost always too cold, and Yakima calls itself the Palm Springs of Washington and whoever decided that should be shot. It’s not the Palm Springs of anything. Palm Springs of depression and murder maybe.
our weather is moody and unpredictable, use that. The other day it went from brilliantly sunny to hailing in a few minutes. It just does that. Monday can be 75 degrees, Tuesday it could snow. Especially in spring.
Western half:
It doesn’t matter where your characters live, if it’s not the absolute heart of a big city your characters WILL have convenient access to woods. Maybe not a lot, but there will be, within fifteen minutes of brisk walking or eight minutes of driving, there will be trees and bushes enough to explore. There are narrow walking trails in green belts between suburban housing developments, undeveloped awkwardly shaped plots of land between grocery stores parking lots, and woods at the edge of parks that may or may not be part of the park.
1 in every 8 houses in the average shitty suburb is full of cultists. The cults have splinter fringe cults. It’s cults all the way down. If your neighbors go to ANY church that isn’t like, one of the big well known branches of Christianity, it’s generally assumed you should cut contact with them cause they’re not worth trying to save. My town had people who pretended to be Mormons to get away with even worse shit. If your characters are in high school, they WILL be accosted by people holding signs and spouting slurs outside the school gates at least once a year. It’s just a thing that happens.
Conversely: everyone knows a couple witches. It’s just a thing. If you go to a community college there’s like a 1 in 10 chance any student you talk to practices witchcraft, and the chance goes up exponentially if they look gay. In my friend group there’s only one non witch, somehow. Stick with the witches, they’re usually pretty cool.
Other gothic genres would have you believe that forests and fields and wild places are scary, don’t be fooled into believing that’s always the case here. It’s not. In fact, the forest is often a place of refuge from, yanno, the weirdos outside of it.
You may think I’m exaggerating but I had neighbors who boarded up their own house and tried to poison the rest of our street when they moved in and spent all Halloween trying to Indoctrinate children. And there was a group of like ten people who faked being from a nearby church as an excuse to harass high schoolers and nobody knew they were fakes until I accidentally told the story to someone who ACTUALLY WENT TO THE CHURCH and was like “uh no we don’t do that wtf???” And that’s how we found of that there were people to fucked up for even the Mormons, and got kicked out and started their own operation! So what did we all do? We started walking home through the woods behind the highschool!
Basically tl:dr if you’re writing on the western half of the state, frame it like there’s scary paranormal goings on in the woods only to plot twist that the villains are humans and the forest’s paranormal activities are helpful, not harmful. Nothing in the woods is scarier than what’s outside of it. Except like, bears and stuff. But usually bears aren’t actively trying to fuck your day up.
Eastern half:
FUN GEOGRAPHY LESSON: rain shadows! We got MOUNTAINS! And when you go over the mountains there’s a huge closet wasteland cause the water gets trapped in the west side! But, between the mountains and the wasteland there’s this beautiful strip of pine forest and meadows called Central Washington it’s beautiful, it’s heaven on earth, once you go there you’ll never want to leave.... except the people there are horrible. It’s like you took a chunk of the Deep South, shook all the actual good stuff out of it, and plopped it in the PNW. Everyone is so up their own asses with politics. trump signs everywhere. So many of them are those godawful rich people who think they’re not rich cause their four story log mansion happens to be in a rural area. I can’t believe I’ve never been hatecrimed over there for how damn gay I look. THE EXCEPTION TO THIS RULE is Ellensburg. Ellensburg my beloved. It’s the best town on earth. Most pedestrian friendly location I’ve ever lived, everyone is super nice, and it’s a college town so there’s always something fun going on!
Tri cities has a bunch of nuclear plant related stuff, do with that what you will.
Back to the fact that half this state is uninhabited due to being completely dry and barren: holy shit the east is scary. It’s just nothing. Rolling hills of nothing. A three hour drive of nothing, then you get to nothing (Idaho edition).
Wine country is its own beast and I would have to make a whole post waxing poetic about how much a vineyard has to give as a gothic setting but here’s the cliff notes:
very isolated, far outside a small town where all the locals know each other, lots of big machines, old dusty barns with cluttered lofts, for straight lines of grapes you can EASILY get lost in the fields, sometimes they scare crows with LOUD AIR CANNONS, hot as hell all the time, people are on the verge between “your cool uncle with money” and “this person has never existed on the same plane of reality as you”, every house has trained hunting dogs for some reason, there’s weird mysterious birds, possibly venomous snakes, and SWARMS of bees and wasps. Oh and everybody and their brother does vineyard weddings. I’m sick to death of vineyard weddings.
Don’t let the maps deceive you. There may be a bunch of town names out there, but that doesn’t mean anything’s there. One time to go camping we drove out into the middle of the state on I-90, took an exit and turned left and kept driving for another hour on completely abandoned roads with no sign of life (but dozens of abandoned rotting houses in the distance) just to get to a “town” that reeked of “we’re getting murdered here cause half of us aren’t white and one of the 3 white people has neon pink hair”. If people wanted to go anywhere they’d have to drive an hour just to get to the interstate. They had one school building for k-12. One gas station, one tiny store, one restaurant. I could lap the entire town in thirty minutes walking. And the first building we saw was a church. Just one. As if the townsfolk weren’t given much of a choice. And there are probably 50 identical towns scattered across the east of the state. Completely isolated.
Tl:dr: want a fresh spin on the “small town full of weirdos” story? Don’t set it in the rural south! Set it in Washington, where you get all the same archetypal weirdness except they think because they’re not in the south they have some kind of moral superiority, and also your lead has nowhere to run cause the landscape is so barren you can damn near see the curve of the earth, where are you gonna hide when the tallest plant goes up to your ankles?
What Grows in Winter
Rating: T
Length: ~4500 words
Pairing: Felix Hugo Fraldarius / Byleth Eisner
Tags: Mistletoe, Hand Warming, Kissing, Holiday Tropes, Fluff, Pining.
Summary: Fodlan’s coldest winter and a gruesome war greet Byleth upon waking from her five-year slumber, and while an improvised winter celebration is in the works, she’s more drawn to a familiar stability. Surely, whatever grows in the harshest seasons can survive anything.
This is my Felileth Secret Santa gift for Rex a.k.a Smoke n’ Milk! Check out their art twitter if you’re craving some Felileth. I hope you all enjoy, and have a very Merry Christmas!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Snow made sparring more challenging. Byleth already knew this, but to do so with Felix only a month after she’d awoken from her five-year slumber was much harder than she’d imagined.
It didn’t help that the weather had been relentless that year, and missing Red Wolf Moon meant missing wolf-hunting season, which would’ve supplied their soldiers and allies with the pelts and meat they needed to survive the cold. The guilt tugged at her mind at all times. So many from both the church and the Kingdom had quickly joined the cause with her name, yet she had nothing to show for it besides barely fending off an Empire assault.
Perhaps sparring Felix grew difficult because he’d grown stronger, or that Byleth had just grown weaker. No matter the excuse, her chill-stiffened muscles struggled to stay mobile against her opponent’s relentless strength.
“You’re slow.” He lunged swiftly, barely giving her time to parry his sword to the side and force an opening. His body pivoted with the movement, however, and their swords clashed before she could move forward on the offensive.
“It’s called a warm-up, Felix,” she panted.
“Maybe you’ll finally buy a coat, or make actual use of the one you already have,” he smirked and sliced at her sleeves that dangled unused from her shoulders. “Or admit that I’ve finally surpassed you.”
“Nah,” she said. “Match isn’t over, Fraldarius, and I doubt you’d accept victory that easily.”
“You’re right,” he chuckled before assuming a ready stance and waiting for her to move first.
Byleth almost accepted his bait out of spite until she felt something tickle her hair. Old habits kicked in, and she spun towards their intruder, which in turn startled Felix. Her sword swung for whatever had snuck up on them, but met only empty air, then a small fishing line. The culprit, a small tuft of twigs, leaves, and red berries, fell to her feet.
“Woah, woah! Easy!” Sylvain yelled from above. The paladin had somehow managed to climb to the roof with a fishing pole without alerting either Felix or Byleth to his presence. Maybe Byleth really had lost her touch.
“Sylvain, what the hell is wrong with you?!” Felix shouted.
With that, Sylvain leapt from the roof, dusted himself off, and held his hands up in defeat. “I wasn’t trying to sneak up on you! You two must’ve been really distracted.” He eyed the severed end of his fishing line. “How did you cut this with a wooden sword?”
“What do you want?” Felix asked. “We’re busy, if you haven’t noticed.”
Byleth’s eyes drifted to the small green shrub lying in the snow. “And what is that?” she added.
“Oh, this?” Sylvain smirked and picked it up, twirling it in his fingers. “Glad you asked. Annette and Merci tasked me with getting everyone into a more... festive ...spirit.”
Right, the mages’ mission to lift everyone’s spirits with an improvised winter celebration. The Lions had reunited, as had many of their allies, but Dimitri was far from a kingly state, their supplies ran short, and the monastery’s defenses were unprepared for another Empire incursion. The millenium-old walls had been worse for wear after five years of war and neglect, but their fortress, like their resolve to carry on, held together.
Mercedes and Annette had immediately called for a celebration of Byleth’s return, though she argued they had many more reasons to celebrate. The Millenium Festival marked their reunion, but the decorations, the music, the feasts, and the bright firelight that contrasted with the white snow had been absent. The two women were making up for that now, and most of the Lions had agreed to help.
“Sylvain, you know you’re supposed to hang up decorations, not flail them around on a fishing rod, right?”
“Ah, but this isn’t a decoration, my good friend.” He tied the bundle to the freshly-cut end of the fishing line and wiggled it between Felix and Byleth. “This, here, is a mistletoe.”
Byleth didn’t know what any of that meant, but if Felix’s reaction was any indication, it wasn’t any good. His annoyed narrow eyes flew open, and his cheeks that surely must have been freezing in the falling snow flushed red.
“See? Felix knows! I knew you’d-”
“Get lost, Sylvain.” Felix ducked away from the plant as if it was a deadly poison.
“Not until you two follow the tradition.” Sylvain’s unyielding grin told Byleth that he wasn’t leaving anytime soon. Few were immune to Felix’s sudden outbursts, and Sylvain was likely the most seasoned in navigating the swordsman’s temper.
Despite the dread hanging in the air, Byleth was curious. “What tradition?”
Felix spun around and pointed his glove in Sylvain’s face. “Don’t tell her!” He didn’t address Byleth directly, but nodded to her. “Trust me, you’re better off not knowing our stupid traditions.”
“Great idea, Felix, why don’t you tell her!” Sylvain nudged his friend as his voice nearly sang. Their moods couldn’t be more opposite, but Byleth knew whose taste aligned more with her own.
Felix grunted. “Let’s just get back to training.”
In their brief repose, Byleth’s muscles had only stiffened by remaining stagnant. And she couldn’t deny her curiosity. “I’m not participating in any weird Faerghus traditions, but I should still know what they are.”
Sylvain’s smile grew all the way to his eyes while Felix scoffed with a look of betrayal. Maybe he wished that she’d push Sylvain to drop it. After a few tense moments, however, he yielded and turned back toward her. Even so, he kept his face turned away from her.
“When two people are caught under a mistletoe, the dumb tradition says they have to...kiss.”
“Oh,” was all Byleth could say in response. If Sylvain was watching her for a strong reaction, he wouldn’t get one. But that was only because her insides were imploding.
Sylvain wanted him to kiss her? Had he chosen them on purpose, or had it just been coincidence?
Did she... want to kiss Felix?
The man didn’t give her time to ponder the sensation any further. “But like I said, it’s dumb, it’s cold, and we’re busy. So get lost, Sylvain.”
“Oh, you’re busy . I see how it is.” He reeled in the mistletoe and swung it over his shoulder. “You two are the first to refuse, you know. It doesn’t have to mean anything. It’s just a sign. A mistletoe is an omen of peace and protection from death. They grow even in the harshest winter. The fact that some began sprouting on the shrubs throughout the monastery is good, no?”
Felix’s face flared red, either with seething anger or pure embarrassment. “Then go find more willing participants and tell Edelgard the war’s over because of some weeds. Leave us.”
Sylvain threw his hands up in defeat. “All right, all right, I surrender. Consent is important, anyways.” Before he pushed the training ground doors open, however, he turned and gave them one last of his dazzling smiles. “You never refused, though. All I heard were excuses.” And with that, he shrugged and moved through the doors.
“Don’t waste that fishing line, Sylvain, I’ll need it later!” Byleth shouted before the doors slammed shut. An awkward silence hung in the air for a moment. Byleth was sure her fingers had fused to her sword hilt. “My hands are freezing,” she said in an attempt to break the tension and turn the conversation elsewhere.
When his eyes met hers, however, he almost looked apologetic. He’d never apologized for his outbursts in the past, so why did he look so regretful now?
Oh.
Oh.
Her attempt to pull his attention away from the awkward situation appeared to work as he strode over to her and removed a glove. Atleast, it worked until his bare hand touched hers, and her cheeks flared with heat. Maybe it was just because his hand was exceptionally warm compared to hers, or maybe it was the sudden close proximity. Regardless, their brief reprieve from recent events was short-lived.
Felix pulled his hand away quickly. “Well, damn, of course they are. You’re gripping a wooden sword in the freezing snow, bare-handed. Will you buy some gloves already?”
“I suppose I’m not used to the cold.” She leaned her sword against a nearby pillar. Relieved that it hadn’t frozen stuck to her palm, she rubbed her now-free hands together for warmth. “It’s worse this year than I remember. Gloves are hard enough to come by, and I can’t...” she paused, recalling how many at the monastery were even less equipped for the cold. “I can’t let myself get comfortable yet.”
Felix sighed, still keeping arm’s distance from her. A moment later, he offered her both of his gloves. She was in the middle of exhaling warm breath against her hands and froze at his sudden gesture.
“Here, you’ll get warmer faster, then we can get back to work.”
He’d never demanded that she borrow anything of his before - not his coat, his gloves, and certainly not his sword. But she knew better than to leave him hanging for too long.
“Thank you,” she said before taking them. Her hands already felt warmer just holding the thick hide fabric. His gloves outsized her hands noticeably, and she didn’t miss the chuckle that came from him when the tips of the fingers flopped over.
But they were extremely warm. Instinctively, she clasped her hands together and brought them close to her face, and she inhaled the scent of pine and sword oil.
Was this how he always smelled?
“Felix?” she asked. He was doing everything in his power to not watch her, but his head turned toward her curiously. “You were right. Traditions are stupid,” she smirked.
His shoulders relaxed, and a half-smile to match her own replaced the scowl that had been present since Sylvain’s provocation. “I get why people have them, but there’s no point to just follow them blindly.”
“Even if they’re just for fun?” she asked.
“Sylvain should know better than to ask me to do something for fun .”
She smirked, “Yes, but he doesn’t know better than to push your buttons. There, I’d say he succeeded.”
Felix scoffed and turned away. As Byleth’s hands warmed, she realized she’d never really taken the time to notice how much her former students had grown. The one before her certainly had. He was taller and stronger, sure. She knew that enough from training with him, but he’d grown in his own mind as well. He’d hardened himself, likely from the war, yet at the same time his gaze had softened towards her and the other Blue Lions, save for Dimitri.
Maybe his vindication, knowing he’d been right all along about the prince, had brought with it a tragic sense of peace.
Back when the prince’s demons had begun to show themselves, Felix had been the only one she could approach about it without getting excuses or looks of pity. That was five years ago, though it still lived freshly in Byleth’s memory.
Five years. She’d seen the growth of her former students, but how had their view of her changed during her absence? How had Felix’s? If he’d thought her to be dead, perhaps he’d simply tucked away memories of her next to Glenn and sought out another rival to overcome. If he’d thought she lived, maybe he’d searched for her and had become more concerned and angry as time went on. Felix hadn’t volunteered which side he’d leaned toward yet, and truth be told, it didn’t matter to Byleth whether he’d believed her to be alive or dead. The fact that he was sparring with her now was enough of an answer.
She learned one more crucial piece of information - that the thought of kissing her made Felix absolutely flustered, not annoyed or irritated.
Despite how everything had changed, Felix remained a source of stability for her. Training with him brought her down to her humanity again, away from the realm of the goddess, nobles, and crests. A second thing she learned - the thought of kissing Felix made her flustered as well.
Amidst the realization, her hands had regained feeling. The growing impatience of her opponent made itself known in the way he paced with folded arms and tapped his bare fingers. Or maybe similar thoughts refused to leave his mind as well.
There was one way to find out.
When Byleth returned to Felix his gloves, she raised herself onto her toes, leaned in, and pecked her lips onto his cheek. He immediately pulled away like she’d just stabbed him, with an eyes-wide look of shock. His cheeks flushed red, and his sword fell from his grasp.
Byleth had seen Felix do many things when caught off guard, but she’d never seen him drop his weapon.
“Wh-what the hell was that for?!”
She retreated a step, doing her best to maintain her calm exterior. “As a thanks, and a way to fulfill that stupid tradition.”
He didn’t respond again, which made her second guess her own judgment. He’d looked like he’d wanted to kiss her, right? She hadn’t imagined the way he let her borrow his gloves, the way he watched her when they sparred.
“I-I’m sorry. I just thought that...you know what? Nevermind. I should go eat. The cold’s obviously getting to me.” She began to back away, but his bare hand caught her wrist. When she looked back in shock, his gaze was still fixated on the ground.
“It-it’s fine,” he croaked and cleared his throat before finally meeting her gaze. “But that’s not how the tradition goes.”
Byleth paused. Why did Felix suddenly care about the rules?
Unless…
“It doesn’t work with...just that.” He stepped closer, keeping a hold on her arm. “You have to…”
Oh.
Did he actually want to kiss her? The way his eyes held her screamed yes , with a taste of caution and a lingering question floating within them. So she answered with the smallest nod she could muster, afraid that moving too quickly would break whatever trance they’d found themselves in.
He didn’t move to touch her anywhere else, but heat flooded her every fiber as he leaned closer and tilted his head to the side. Her eyes closed themselves, overwhelmed at the sight, and then a warmth brushed across her lips. It was brief, if a little ticklish, and she responded in kind before the sensation quickly retreated.
Her eyes remained shut for too long, afraid of the image that would greet her. Would he look happy? Angry? She feared that he may have already turned his back and walked away before his calloused grip on her arm reminded her that he was still within reach.
Finally, her eyelids gained the strength to open, and indeed the sight would’ve made her heart race if it hadn’t been permanently unbeating. Felix watched her intently, searching her for emotions. Her self-expression was still muted, but he’d become one of the few people who could read her subtle changes, and she hoped that his intuition had remained with him after all those years.
What his eyes communicated, on the other hand, was as clear as day to her. Though he watched her, his gaze was soft with his eyelids hanging lightly. She cursed the snow that fell between the few inches of space between them, interrupting her view. She’d never denied that he was handsome in the same way she’d never deny his skills with a sword, yet now he looked to her almost as a lover would. Not quite open and comfortable enough to freely steal hazy glances, but enough to ask another question.
Is this really what you want?
A question that went unasked, as the words that came from him brought her thoughts to a halt. “Now it counts,” he spoke plainly, as if he were commenting on her sword technique.
They avoided one another's gaze once again, with his eyes darting down and hers upwards. She scanned the roof, suddenly paranoid that their prior company hadn’t completely left, and swore she saw a second, fresher disturbance in the snow that blanketed the roof. Whether the redhead would earn himself a few more weeks of stable duty wasn’t on the forefront of her mind, however, compared to the man retreating from her.
“I thought you hated traditions.” She turned her wrist in his grasp so she could return his hold, telling him he could stay if he liked.
Or possibly ask for more.
The thought of kissing him again, fully aware and able to better-prepare herself, erupted butterflies in her chest. She wondered if this was the closest she’d feel to a racing heartbeat.
“I do.” He kept his tone, but his expression held the same question as before. His voice dropped when he spoke again. “But I don’t...hate you.”
She tried to stop the snort that escaped from her nose to no avail, so her free hand came up to cover her face. Now Felix just looked offended, but the way his face continued to redden as he turned away told her that he wished he’d chosen his words better.
But she didn’t. Felix wasn’t the type of man to overthink his words. It was one of his traits that allowed him to be honest and insightful, even if his words stung. Regardless, she knew that I don’t hate you from Felix meant more than the words themselves.
Her grip on his wrist held firm, and she ran her thumb along the fabric of his sleeve. “I don’t hate you either, Felix.”
He seemed to just notice her touch, for his attention turned to their interlocked arms. Facing her again, he made her the flustered one when he slid his fingers down to take her hand instead. It surprised her how quickly he could turn the tables against her.
“Byleth…”
Familiarity hit her as he stepped closer again, only now his other hand caressed her shoulder, his warm gloves discarded somewhere in the snow. The gaze in his eyes, however, had shifted drastically. Where previously he approached her like a stray cat, now his eyes resembled a wolf - hungry and knowing exactly what he wanted. Her breath hitched, and she managed to rest her free hand against his waist. He was warm as always, but she swore he was shivering. No, trembling.
“Felix…”
Whatever words tried to spill from her were stopped, but not with the crashing of his lips against hers like she’d imagined. Instead, the doors to the training grounds burst open.
The wolf-like expression before her switched from hunger to anger. He pushed her away sharply, but she took no offense as she’d probably have done the same. Her attention turned to the entryway, where she expected to see Sylvain. She was partially correct, but the paladin wasn’t alone.
Ashe ran to the front and nearly collapsed into the snow, out of breath. “You aren’t going to believe this, Professor! I was scouting and-”
“Slow down, Ashe, you’re hyperventilating!” Mercedes patted his back and offered him water. Indeed, his face was beet red, and his breathing short. He panted as if he’d just run several miles up the mountain, which would be true if he’d been scouting.
“Let me finish.” He took a deep breath and stepped forward. “Professor, we won’t have to worry about blankets and pelts this winter, because a herd is approaching! A herd of...llamas!”
The surprise threw Byleth in many different mental directions. She suddenly became aware of her and Felix’s state. They’d tried to appear as if they’d just been sparring like any other day, yet their bare hands, long-abandoned swords, and fresh shoeprints in the snow gave away their close proximity only moments ago. She quickly scanned the crowd to see if anyone had picked up on those details. Ashe, though a skilled scout, was too winded and had let his senses drop within the safety of the monastery. Mercedes and Annette hadn’t noticed. So that just left-
Sylvain didn’t even try to hide the grin plastered on his face. He stood unnoticed in the back of the group, just so only Felix and Byleth would catch his gaze. Byleth felt heat rise to her face, but retained her well-practiced stoic facade. Felix, however, failed to hide his flustered annoyance, and his face grew brighter with every second. Luckily for him, the other students were only looking for their former professor’s reaction.
“We’ve never hunted those before,” Byleth said.
“You don’t hunt them!” Annette jumped to gain everyone’s attention. “You shepherd them and use their fleece to make blankets! They can even protect themselves and other livestock from wolves!”
“I don’t recall llamas being around when I was teaching.”
“They’re native to south Fodlan, where the climate is a little more friendly to them.” Sylvain finally broke his painfully teasing silence. “I guess the combination of the war in Alliance and Empire territory with the thinning human population around here drove them this far north.”
“That’s great news.” Byleth managed a small smile. One of her burdens - helping her friends and comrades survive the brutal winter - had been lifted.
“Yes!” Annette beamed. “No one will be cold this year!”
“Does this mean we’ll have to cancel our winter festival?” Mercedes asked.
For whatever reason, they looked to Byleth for an answer. She found the gesture sweet, that they still looked to her for guidance or permission for things she was barely involved in.
She already knew her answer, yet still scanned their faces. Annette and Mercedes begged with their eyes, and she resisted chuckling at their collective adorable nature. Ashe was beginning to regain his strength, seeming to just notice the other people present. It wouldn’t be long before he’d realize the awkwardness of the situation he’d just barged in on.
Sylvain looked to her curiously. She and Felix had practically cursed holiday traditions earlier, though Byleth had nothing against holidays or celebrations themselves. He was scanning her to see if she’d prioritize fun or practicality.
Well, why not both?
Finally, she turned to the man beside her. Felix waited for her reaction as well, though he’d probably only taken in half of the conversation. The flush of his cheeks had begun to subside, and he shot her a half-smile with folded arms. He knew the answer she was about to give, and was savoring the wait as much as she was.
“Of course not.” She could practically feel the collective sigh and smiled before facing the rest of her audience. “There are plenty of hands looking for busy work. I don’t see why we can’t handle both. Marianne is good with animals, so I’ll appoint her to lead.”
“We should clear a pasture for them, so they’ll know where a safe place is,” Annette added.
Ashe just laughed, seemingly still in disbelief of the day’s events. He definitely wasn’t the only one.
“Oh this is wonderful!” Mercedes clasped her hands together. “I hope they’ll come back next year, and the year after that! Imagine if it were safe enough to let children see them!”
“If they do, we’ll make it a-” the last word caught in Byleth’s throat, and her attention was immediately drawn to Sylvain’s smirk, somehow even larger than earlier. She swallowed and cleared her throat, looked to Felix, then back to Sylvain, and finished her thought, “-a tradition.”
Sylvain snickered, which confused everyone but the swordsmen. Felix’s flush quickly returned. It really wasn’t that hard to get a rise out of him, was it?
“Changed your mind on traditions, Professor?” Sylvain asked with his hands on his hips. “Could it be because some of them might work-”
“We got damn lucky,” Felix interrupted, letting loose his thoughts for the first time in this conversation. “You said it yourself: the war, the low population - that drove them here. Not your stupid mistletoe.”
“Oh, you took out the mistletoe!” Mercedes exclaimed. “You’re the best, Sylvain!”
“Just doing my duty.”
“Wait.” Annette tapped her chin. “Did Felix actually kiss someone!”
Byleth had done her work to keep the attention off of Felix thus far, but now he’d thrown himself to the wolves. Even Ashe’s eyes lit up. Byleth couldn’t help her amusement.
“No!” Felix shouted and stomped off to gather his sword. No one stopped him.
Sylvain, despite the endless dancing on Felix’s thin ice, came to his friend’s aid. “Alas, even I cannot get Felix to kiss anyone.” It wasn’t technically a lie.
“What about you, Professor?” Mercedes asked. “Did you kiss anyone?”
“I’m not kissing anyone who still calls me ‘Professor.’” Also not a lie, since Felix hadn’t addressed her by that title since their reunion.
“Good point,” Mercedes giggled. “I just can’t bring myself to call you by your first name yet.”
“Yeah,” Annette said. “You’ll always be our professor, first and foremost.”
“Well, someone’s kiss brought survivability to the monastery, that’s all I’m saying.” Sylvain shrugged his shoulders and shot both Felix and Byleth winks from the back.
Byleth could practically feel the heat radiating off of Felix, compared to the chilled falling snow around them. Luckily for them, Sylvain pushed it no further. Unluckily for them, the rest caught on.
“Felix, are you okay?” Mercedes asked. “You look like you’re catching a cold.”
“I’m fine,” he grumbled. “Just want to get back to training. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re in a war.”
“I suppose we should go count the herd’s numbers,” Ashe said, “and start learning how to use their fleece.”
“Oh! I’ll come!” Annette skipped after him.
Mercedes eyed Felix suspiciously, not in the way Sylvain had, but like a concerned mother. She looked to Byleth, almost to communicate, make sure he takes care of himself , and Byleth affirmed her with a nod. Sylvain was the last to leave, simply offering the pair one last wink and a salute before closing the doors to the training grounds.
Being alone with Felix once more, they couldn’t ignore what had happened. Her exposed skin suddenly forgot all about the cold, and the supposedly fearless Ashen Demon couldn’t bring herself to look in the eyes of the man who’d kissed her.
“I should go, too,” she said. “I need to ask Marianne to take on her role and...other things.”
Felix was silent as she retrieved her training sword and hung it on the weapon rack where it would be protected by the roof’s overhang.
Perhaps he was still as flustered as she was, or he’d lost his courage to act. Or perhaps...he’d regretted it all.
Before she reached the large double doors, however, a firm hold pulled at her wrists and spun her around. Amber eyes met hers again, with a familiar hungry expression.
“Before you go,” he hummed, only audible by their proximity, “just know that I…”
He took a moment to search for the right words, his darting pupils betraying his thoughts. In the end, he gave up on talking and simply kissed her. Damn him for catching her off-guard again, but she wouldn’t hesitate a second time. She pulled her wrists free in favor for grasping his fur collar. Soon she felt his hands at her waist, and knew he wouldn’t retreat.
So warm. He was so warm, and suddenly surviving the harsh war-torn winter didn’t feel so improbable.
in the lane, snow is glistening | Stucky | Canon Divergent, Winter Fluff, Pre-War, but also Post Endgame | 2.3k words | Ao3
Summary:
Two times Steve and Bucky take a walk through the snowy park.
based on a one-line holiday prompt - "if you throw that snowball, you’re declaring war"
A/N: It’s funny you said you’re in the mood for some winter fluff cause this one is specifically for you. Thank you so much for the prompt, my love  @its-tortle ♥ The summary it's basically what the fic is about lmao You just need to add two dumb boys in love, loads of fluff and bickering and a good helping of emotions.
Also - my seventh fill for the @stuckybingo2020 ♥
The Prospect Park looks beautiful covered in a thick layer of white fluff, sparkling in the morning sun. It only started snowing last afternoon but there's a good two inches of snow everywhere. The park is relatively empty. The hour is late enough for most people to be at work or whenever they need to be but also cold enough for most people to stay at home if they don’t need to be anywhere. Bucky has no idea why he and Steve are outside. It was probably one of Steve's stupid ideas that Bucky has agreed to because there are only a few things he is able to deny when it is Steve who does the asking.
So here they are. Strolling through the snowy, almost completely deserted park on a Wednesday morning. Both shaking slightly in their worn coats, too thin for such weather. Bucky curses himself in his mind. He shouldn’t have agreed to this. What if Steve catches another cold? Even a light one always completely wears him out, tying him to bed for days. At least he agreed to take Bucky's scarf in addition to his own. He didn't go down without a fight. It took almost half an hour of arguing before Steve finally gave up and took the scarf.
So what if Bucky is now trying not to shake too visibly. At least Steve is warm. Ish, considering the temperature, but it's still comforting.
"Steve, come on," Bucky sways to the right, nudging Steve lightly. "We should head back."
Steve nudges him back, pressing his arm into Bucky's for a bit too long. The alley is wide enough and yet they still walk with barely an inch of space between them.
"Just a minute," Steve looks up at him. "It's the first snow of the year, let's enjoy it without your nagging, shall we?"
Bucky rolls his eyes, annoyed. But he doesn't press any further. Damn Steve Rogers and his stupid ideas. And damn his stupid, beautiful blue eyes. Just one look into them and all of Bucky’s common sense flies out of the window.
“I wonder if you still will be such a punk if you get sick again,” Bucky mumbles. Still, instead of taking the left turn that’ll take them home, he goes right, to take another leap around the park.
“Probably,” Steve grins.
His smile is as bright as the sun. Bucky feels warmer already, just looking at Steve’s happy face. Steve’s eyes are sparkling and he looks content and healthy and Bucky really hopes it’ll stay this way for the rest of the winter. Or forever, preferably. And maybe Steve’s right. The times they live in aren’t the easiest and it’s important to cherish all the little joys they’re able to find.
“I don’t know why I still put up with you. You’re horrible,” Bucky says. The way he looks at Steve says something entirely different, though.
“You’re horrible, too,” Steve points out. “So we’re even.”
A fond smile still in place, Bucky only rolls his eyes and quickens his pace, just a bit to get ahead of Steve in pretend annoyance. After just a few seconds he glances over his shoulder and sees that Steve is crouching down. At first Bucky thinks he’s just tying his shoe but he’s proven wrong soon enough.
“Oh no. Don’t you dare,” Bucky says as he turns around quickly. “If you throw that snowball, you’re declaring war.”
Steve cocks one of his eyebrows up as if Bucky just challenged him. Which Bucky didn’t, he’s not stupid enough to challenge Steven Grant Rogers. But that’s probably what Steve thinks has happened.
So — of course — before Bucky can say anything else, a snowball hits him right in the chest. After a second the hurriedly-made soft missiles are criss-crossing over the park alley. Steve’s not bad but he’s no match for Bucky and his perfect aim. In the last heroic and desperate measure, Steve runs across the alley with a fierce scream and tackles Bucky. Completely surprised by this sudden course of action, Bucky tumbles to the ground and a surprised laugh is knocked out of his chest as he falls.
Steve hovers over him. He has his arms braced on both sides of Bucky’s face. His bony knees are pressing gently into Bucky’s sides.
Bucky looks up. He looks at the joyous sparkles in Steve's eyes, at the satisfied grin, the dishevelled hair and cheeks reddened by the cold and exertion. The midday sun is right behind him, making it look like there’s a bright halo surrounding him. He’s the most beautiful sight and for a moment Bucky feels like he can’t breathe. This is the sight he wants to store carefully in his memory and take to his grave when his time comes.
In a split second something around them changes. The world turns, a minute ticks by but the atmosphere changes from joyful to something heavier. Bucky’s perfectly aware of Steve’s gaze that flicks to his lips once, twice, before skipping back up to his eyes. It makes Bucky go crazy. There’s nothing that he wants more than to lean on his elbows and kiss the remnants of Steve’s cocky grin off his face. But he doesn’t. The cold ground under his body, the distant voices of the city make him regain control.
“We should—,” Bucky starts, his voice hoarse all of sudden. “There’s people— We should head back home, yeah?”
Steve lets out a small sigh but he nods shortly before scrambling to his feet. When he pulls Bucky back up, their fingers remain intertwined for a moment longer than necessary.
***
The Prospect Park looks beautiful, covered in a thick layer of white fluff, sparkling in the morning sun. It’s the middle of the winter but only recently it got cold enough for the snow to stick for longer, instead of melting the moment it hit the ground. Despite it being almost midday, there are many people hanging around the park.
It was Steve’s idea to go outside and wander aimlessly through the city. His ideas of fun are a bit different than Bucky’s. If it was up to him, they’d stay in their warm flat and do things that didn’t require getting cold. But after all this time, he still has a hard time saying no to Steve.
Bucky is not a big fan of the cold these days. Sam always laughs that he’s just a big, mean cat that will hiss and scratch everyone who looks at him the wrong way. He calls him the Winter Panther and actually asked T’Challa to adopt him at one point. Sam is ridiculous sometimes. It’s not Bucky’s fault that he doesn’t like to be around people sometimes and that he really enjoys having his hair pet — but only by Steve and Nat. And maybe Clint. Or Sam, but he’s rarely willing to do that. And Bucky does tend to pick the warmest, sunniest part in any place he’s at.
After everything, Bucky just has a pretty bad associations with cold.
Today is fine, though. He doesn’t mind wandering arm in arm with Steve. Bucky’s safely tucked up in his long, warm coat and he has two scarves wrapped around his neck. When they left home he had only one but after walking for a while he confiscated Steve’s. The idiot had it hanging loosely around his neck anyway, didn’t even bother to wrap it once. It’s a miracle that his coat is buttoned up. This man has turned into a walking furnace after the serum. Bucky is convinced Steve’s leeching his warmth to fuel it.
"You want to head home, already?" Steve asks, looking at Bucky with a soft smile.
There's a tiny hint of concern in his eyes. It's easy to miss but after all those years and everything they've been through, there's almost nothing about Steve that gets by Bucky.
"I'll be fine," Bucky grumbles. They both know it's more on principle. "We can freeze my butt off for a bit longer, no problem."
Steve only rolls his eyes at Bucky, shoving him to the side but doesn't loosen his grip on Bucky's elbow.
"Ah, you're incredibly cheerful today, my love," Steve says, voice dripping with sarcasm.
"How could I not be? My partner always has such splendid ideas for our daily activities," Bucky answers, with an overly sweet smile.
"You're such a jerk," Steve laughs.
After a moment, he extracts his hand from under Bucky's elbow and crouches. Assuming that he needs to tie his shoe, Bucky doesn't stop. When he looks over his shoulder a moment later, he audibly gasps and turns around.
"Fuck off, Steve! Don’t! If you throw that snowball, you're declaring war!"
As soon as those words escape his mouth, Bucky frowns. He looks to the side, trying to decipher that weird feeling of deja vu. A memory appears in his head.
It's a memory from a life long gone, from a park much like this one, from a winter that ended ages ago.
"Bucky?" Steve asks, dropping the snowball and taking a step closer. "You're OK?"
"Yes, it's just—," Bucky hesitates and when he looks back up at Steve, he sees that the concern in his eyes is as clear as a day now. "I've just remembered something. An old memory," he clarifies and smiles fondly. "I believe it was about a snow fight I've had with some little punk in this park. I said the very same thing to him back then. It's not a very detailed memory. And who knows if it actually happened?"
The smile on Steve's face grows gradually with every word Bucky says.
"Oh, it did happen. I actually might know the punk you're talking about," Steve jokes. His hands come to rest at Bucky's waist as he continues. "I'm pretty sure it was him that persuaded you to take a walk and since you've always been lazy, you've had a lot of complaining to do before you agreed."
"Oh, of course. It's not like I tried to keep the little punk from dying of pneumonia or something," Bucky rolls his eyes but he's smiling.
Steve completely ignores his comment. "The two of you walked for a while, didn't talk much but enjoyed the day. At some point he made a snowball and you said the same thing you did a moment ago. It didn’t make an impression on him, though.”
"Because he was a little shit," Bucky smiles softly, pressing the palm of his hand to Steve's chest.
"Maybe," Steve says with a chuckle. "The snow fight took some time and even though you weren't kids anymore it was the most fun you had in awhile. And then he took you by surprise and did this."
Before Bucky properly registers Steve's words, his legs are swept from under him and he tumbles to the ground. Steve goes with him, an arm behind Bucky's back cushions his fall. If it wasn't for Steve Bucky’s habits, both the Winter Soldier and the army ones would already kick in. But Steve is and always has been a calming presence for him. His anchor. So the only thing Bucky feels right now is surprise and a bit of annoyance, probably. No sight of feeling unsafe so he is able to remain calm.
Steve's face hovers over him, a mischievous sparkle in his eyes.
"He easily knocked you down. You stayed like this for a bit, just staring at each other," Steve's hand comes to brush against Bucky's cheek.
The look in Steve's eyes is both tender and heated and it makes Bucky forget all about the people around them, about the cold ground underneath him.
"He couldn't stop thinking about how badly he wanted to kiss you, right there and then. Just for a moment he wanted not to care about the people who could see you and how dangerous that could be. It would have taken so little effort to do so," Steve's voice is down to almost a whisper.
As if to prove a point, he leans down and presses a sweet, chaste kiss to Bucky's lips. Bucky smiles into it, feeling the tell-tale prickle of tears in his eyes.
"Who knows if he managed to do that after you'd gone back home."
"I think he might have," Bucky says quietly, swiping his thumb across Steve's jaw.
Steve's face is soft and filled with pure happiness. Bucky's heart feels like it's about to burst simply from looking at him, from all the emotions he tries to store inside. Steve’s beautiful blue eyes crinkle at the corners, his lips spread in a big smile. The December sun is shining high on the sky behind Steve, surrounding his body in a bright embrace. He's beautiful. Even after all those years, Bucky still thinks Steve is the most beautiful sight he'd ever seen. Breathtaking. And when Bucky's time comes again, he knows that that is the memory he is going to take with him.
Since the mere sight of Steve is enough to have saved him from desolation once already.
"Come on, Buck," Steve says, getting to his feet. "Let's go home."
Feeling a bit hazy from the sudden tide of emotions, Bucky let's Steve pull him up. He leans forward, pressing another kiss to Steve's mouth. Even if no words are exchanged, they both know what the other thinks.
I’m yours and you’re mine and there’s nothing that could make me stop loving you.
After shaking the snow off of each other, they head back to the same part of Brooklyn where they used to live in the previous life they shared.
Their fingers stay entwined the entire walk home.
@nojohi hey, I was your holiday exchange person! I made some puckabrina fluff for you!
The first time it kind of happened was when Sabrina is thirteen.
She had been up since 5 AM because Daphne had woken everyone up banging on a pot and screaming that it was Christmas like it was new information the rest of the family hadn't been privy to until now. It was nearly 1 PM now and most of the adults were getting Christmas lunch ready, meaning that Sabrina (and Puck, kind of) was in charge of making sure none of the younger kids did anything hospital visit worthy.
Red was coloring quietly while Pinocchio talked her ear off about the new books he'd received; Basil chewed contently on the ear of his well-loved stuffed rabbit: Daphne had received a Nerf gun from ‘Santa’ and was currently doing her best to make it everyone else’s problem. Satisfied with the fact that nobody was in the process of burning the house down, Sabrina settled against the arm of the couch to watch whatever cheesy Christmas movie was playing and eat as much candy as she could until she inevitably lost her appetite trying to eat whatever food Granny Relda was whipping up. Unfortunately, a grubby hand stole both her peace and her candy cane.
“Your face is gonna freeze if you keep looking at me like that,” Puck responded cheerfully to her heated glare. There was a loud crunch as he bit the end of his ill-gotten treat. “You know, you humans like to pat yourselves on the back for all that lame stuff like going to the moon, but really your best achievement are these right here.” He waved the candy cane for emphasis. “Delicious and easy to sharpen into a weapon to use against your enemies? Genius!”
“Glad you're impressed,” Sabrina grumbled. “Now give it back.” She made a grab for it, but he simply leaned out of her reach. When she tried again, he fluttered away and hovered in the middle of the room. He shot her a smug smile and she saw red.
Oh, it was on.
She chased him around the room, nearly knocking over several stacks of books in the process. He would occasionally slow down, allowing her to almost catch him before picking up his speed again and leaving her in the dust with a high-pitched giggle. He finally stopped and hovered a couple inches above her, but before she could snatch the damn candy cane out of his hand (and maybe punch him a couple times for good measure), a loud, giddy voice interrupted them.
“Ooh, Puck and Sabrina are under the mistletoe!” Daphne cried, momentarily  distracted from shooting Nerf bullets at the empty soda can perched precariously on a stack of books. Sabrina looked up and, sure enough, there was a sprig of mistletoe strung up above their heads.
“Mistletoe?” Puck flew higher for a better look. “What’s it for? Does it give you some kind of horrible rash or something?” He asked, looking at Sabrina like hundreds of new prank ideas were already streaming through his mind.
“No, it-" Sabrina started to say, but was swiftly interrupted.
“Nope!” Daphne bounced over to them. “It's just a regular plant, but if you stand under it with somebody, you have to kiss them.”
“Kiss them? But that means…” Puck trailed off, eyes locking onto Sabrina's, and she could feel his blush mirrored on her own face.
“Whatever. It's just a dumb tradition,” Sabrina muttered, furiously shutting down any thoughts of her and Puck's decidedly less platonic interactions and the weird, warm feelings they conjured up.
Daphne looked like she wanted to protest, but, thankfully Granny Relda called them in for lunch before the conversation could get any more awkward.
(Her and Puck still avoid making eye contact for the rest if the day.)
--
The second time it almost happened, Sabrina was fourteen.
The wind bit into her nose and whipped at the exposed bit of wrist between the end of her sleeves and the start of her gloves. Snow had made its way into her shoes and was slowly soaking into her socks. Her fingers felt like icicles masquerading as a part of her body. But, despite the miserable weather, Sabrina was having the time of her life.
Why? Because she was in the middle of a free-for-all snowball fight death match.
It was almost 10 AM and despite the inviting warmth inside the house, nothing could beat the adrenaline coursing through her veins. Snowball fights might be relatively tame for other families, but add in a couple everafters and Grimms, and it became a dog-eat-dog world.
Sabrina panted as she hid behind a tree, fingers curled as tightly as they could around a snowball without crushing it. From her vantage point, she had a clear shot at Red and Daphne's hastily constructed snow fort. But, before she could make a move, a twig snapped behind her, immediately putting her on the defensive.
It was Puck, hiding behind his own tree only a couple feet away. She raised her weapon, but he shook his head frantically at her and pointed at Red and Daphne's fort with a raised eyebrow. Two years of battle strategies and living together meant that Sabrina could read the look on his place like it was a book; he was proposing a sneak attack. She nodded, and then held up three fingers. On the count of three.
Three.
Two.
Before she could lower her last finger, Puck transformed into a polar bear and charged. He roared and the little girls shrieked in response. They tried to fight back, but it was in vain considering that Puck was literally a fucking bear. He knocked the their fort down and then swiped at the snow with his paw, sending it showering over the girls. It was then that Sabrina attacked from the left flank, pelting them mercilessly.
But, just when it looked like victory would be theirs, Daphne reached into her pocket and pulled out a small ring. Sabrina's world was upended as the snow she was standing on rose up and then dropped back down on her and Puck.
“Using magic is cheating,” Sabrina said as she wiped the snow off her face.
“You never said that,” Daphne chirped.
“She's got a point,” Puck pointed out. “Good one, Marshmallow.” He shot her a finger gun and she shot one back
“Don't take her side!” Sabrina said, shoving his shoulder. “She's the reason we lost!”
“Aww, did the wittle baby wose the snowball fwight?” Puck cooed, his baby voice dripping with sugary sweet condescension as he shoved her back
“You lost too, dummy!” She cried, nearly sending him sprawling with her next push. It continued like that for a little bit, playful and pointless fighting without any heat behind it. But, despite the lack of heat in their argument, there was still a warmth settling into Sabrina's gut because this, this was easy as breathing. It sparked something deep inside that she didn't want to name.
But, when Puck tripped over a buried tree root and fell onto her, the spark erupted into a raging inferno because suddenly with him on top of her, their faces hovering only a couple inches apart, Sabrina couldn't feel the cold around her through the abrupt heat pooling in her cheeks. Puck stared down at and for a eternity of milliseconds, the only things that seemed to exist were the two of them and soft sounds of their breathing.
The moment stretched out long, too long, and if it stretched any longer it felt like everything they weren't talking about was going to bubble to the surface and spill over so Sabrina found herself pushing Puck away from her with a shout of, “Get off me, you gasbag!”
That moment was quietly added to the pile of Things They Don't Talk About and Sabrina swore to herself that the redness of her cheeks was a result of the cold.
--
Sabrina was fifteen when it finally happened for real.
Her and Puck were outside sword fighting with the swords Charming had gifted her. They were dull and blunted training swords, but still a definite upgrade from Puck's old wooden swords. Veronica supervised from the porch as their blades clashed.
Puck thrust forward with his sword and she blocked it, quickly twisting her own weapon into a disarming maneuver. Puck's sword fell to the snow with little fanfare and she snatched it up before he could even move to pick it up. Puck seethed, but couldn't do anything; they'd agreed before the match that all forms of shapeshifting and other magic were prohibited. She smiled smugly about her victory and held out his sword for him to take back and his hand closed around the hilt before she could move hers off. A warmth that juxtaposed the cold air around them filled Sabrina's body.
She didn't know who started it. Maybe he stepped forward first, maybe she did. All that mattered was that they were much closer than before and the only things between them were their hovering, visible breaths and all the things they refuse to talk about.
This next part though, this was all Sabrina.
She kissed him.
She decided that she was sick of this, sick of all these what-ifs and should-haves and almosts. She was sick of this game they were playing where they flirted and teased but never made any real progress. She was sick of saying nothing when she wanted to say everything they both already knew.
So she kissed him.
It made it sound simpler than it was. If she had to describe it in clichés, she would say it was all of them. Fireworks and butterflies and the sun going supernova all at once in her stomach. In that moment, she didn't care about the cold seeping into her fingers or the layer of sweat covering both of them or the fact that her mom was still outside with them. The world could have exploded for all she cared.
The kiss lasted five seconds and an eternity at the same time. Their lips broke apart, but instead of pulling away completely, Puck simply rested his forehead against her own.
“I always knew you had a crush on me,” Puck teased softly.
“Shut up,” she said, struggling to keep a grin off her face and out of her voice.
It might have taken two almost-kisses to get here, but hey, third time's the charm, right?
Of Books and Strangers
NOTE: Here's a less dark story this time- this is one of my first attempts at a romance story (Help I didn't know what I was doing with this one) but it turned out ok. I do have a multi-chapter story that I'll start uploading next week or later depends but anyway enough from me- I hope you enjoy the story!
WARNINGS: NONE
Tumblr media
The cool air nipped at his skin. Cheeks flushed, adrenaline pumping, he raced down the street, continuously checking his watch as he went.
Five minutes left.
He could make it if he hustled.
The streets were mostly silent, only the occasional car or passerby but not much else. He checked his watch again. Two minutes. Almost there, keep going. The shops all blurred together, he was only focused on a particular sign ahead of him anyway.
Finally, he skidded to a stop in front of a wooden door, pushing it open. The musky smell of old parchment filled his nostrils as the bell rang, alerting the staff of the newcomer. It was calming, familiar. He quickly collected himself and scanned around for the nearest staff member. Bingo! Target in sight, he hurried over.
‘Excuse me!’ he all but yelled, ‘Where’s the dystopia section? I’m looking for a copy of ‘Monsters of Men’ by Patrick Ness!’ The staff member directed him to the shelves, notifying him that there was only one left in stock, the last of the signed copy editions. Thanking her, he dashed into the aisle.
‘Come on, come on!’ He whispered, eyes darting from spine to spine, brows furrowed, forehead dripping with sweat. Not this shelf. Whipping around, he scanned the next row. ‘Ah!’ he exclaimed. There it was, in all its glory. Pristine spine, copper decals, mint copy - and most of all, it was signed! Every book lover’s dream!
Just as he reached for the chunky book, a soft hand accidentally brushed against his, also reaching for the same thing. Instinctively, he flinched back, hand retracting, allowing the stranger to make their move and swoop in on the prize. They gently pulled it out of the shelf, proceeding with caution so as to avoid damaging it. Finally, someone who treats books right.
‘Ah, sorry. Did you want this?’ The stranger held out the book.
Their voice was soft yet strong, brimming with confidence. Examining their features, he came to the conclusion that this was a woman standing in front of him. She looked to be around his age, he noted. She was a head shorter than him, reaching just under his chin. He sighed, he had run here for nothing. His cheeks were still flushed, and his lungs hadn’t quite recovered yet. He felt oddly at ease, this woman respected her books, and he knew it would be in good hands.
‘You keep it, you deserve it.’ He cringed. You deserve it? Nice going, voicing out your thoughts. Well that was awkward. He could already predict her reaction, smiling awkwardly and slowly moving away - like everyone else that he encountered. The image of going back to his lonely apartment popped into his head - he already knew he’d be reliving this moment at ungodly times in the night, he just did. Shivering, he shoved his hands deeper into his pocket - at which point they felt somewhat clammy.
She smiled, clearly amused. At least she didn’t turn tail and run. He would, if he was on the receiving end.
‘Hmm, are you sure? This is the last copy after all - it’s sold out everywhere else. You seem like you made quite the effort to get to it-’ gesturing to his haphazard attire, she articulated her point- ‘and also seemed to forget how to wear a scarf.’ Her hazel eyes flickered to said scarf, squinting. She tucked the novel under her arm, then reached over and fixed his attire, straightening his coat collar and re-wrapping the scarf. Meanwhile he stood there, frozen stiff. What just happened?
‘Oh- sorry! I had younger siblings you see, so I had a habit of making them look presentable. They couldn’t dress themselves properly for the life of them.’ She smiled, fondly recalling a memory, most likely envisioning her family in their lively home - a stark contrast to his empty apartment. The only person he had over was the delivery man. But really, was he dressed that bad? He must’ve looked like a hoodlum, running around like that. Great, another thing to add to his ever-increasing list of embarrassing moments. Oh right, she asked him a question.
‘Please, keep the book. Think of it as an act of generosity from your local book-lover,’ he winked - might as well max out the weirdness. Well, he actually did want to be nice. After all, she had just spared him another 10 minutes of looking like an idiot. Luckily she was very socially adept and responded with tucking her hand under her chin in mock thought.
‘You know, mother always said to not accept gifts from strangers.’ Well, he hadn’t even paid for it so it wasn’t much of a gift, per say. This was awkward. What should he say? Should he say anything? She spared him another moment of internal panic, though, for she opened her mouth to speak once more. ‘But you won’t be a stranger if you tell me your name!’ She held out her hand for him to shake. Smooth.
‘Gerald, nice to meet you, uh-’
‘Meredith,’ she grinned, ‘Well then, Mr Gerald, thank you for the book. Say, do you visit here often?’ She opened her tote bag (It had ‘The Case-back Book of Sherlock Holmes’ on it. Cute) and pulled out her purse, making her way to the counter. As she was about to hand the cashier the change, he stopped her, paying for her instead. She smiled at him as thanks. He then proceeded to answer.
‘Yes, actually. This is my local bookstore, which I frequent every Saturday. There’s just something about bookstores - and libraries - that’s just so…’ He trailed off, waving his hands around, trying to emphasise his point. She laughed, agreeing with him, mirroring his gestures. That wasn’t so bad.
They exited together, instantly having to face the chilly, bitter air. Meredith’s nose became red, breath coming out in visible puffs as she stuck her hands deeper into her pockets. The book was carefully tucked away in her bag, safe for journey to its new home.
‘Well, it was nice meeting you, Gerald. It’s not everyday you meet someone who shares a passion with you. Thank you.’ She paused, the corners of her lips upturned.
‘You’re welcome, Meredith.’ He tested out her name on his tongue. It was strange and difficult to pronounce, him not being quite used to it yet. She waved goodbye and spun on her heels, walking away towards the bus stop. ‘See you soon,’ he whispered, though his words were lost in the icy wind. She looked lonely and cold, her figure slightly hunched to conserve what little warmth she had. The sudden urge to console that figure kicked in. She probably got on well with her siblings, with the way she talked so fondly. She probably wanted to get home quickly, feeling a little lonely without them. He grabbed the receipt from his pocket, along with a pen and hurriedly scribbled something down, hands quickly losing feeling in them.
‘Ah! Wait!’ He yelled, trying to catch up with her. His boots crunched against the snow, damn she walked fast. He held his scarf in his hand, face now exposed to the true extent of the harsh weather. Finally, he caught up, hunching over and catching his breath. She looked at him quizzically, watching him recover. He stood, firmly wrapping his scarf around her neck. ‘What’ll your siblings say if you catch a cold?’ He finished, admiring his handiwork. Nodding to himself, he spoke over his shoulder, ‘Take care of yourself, ok?’ With that, he left, humming to himself - he felt good, like a weight had been lifted. He had helped someone.
What he didn’t witness was her tugging the scarf down slightly, picking up the note which fell out. Tears slipped down her face as she read it, he was kind, so, so kind. She didn’t deserve that kindness. His note reminded her to take care of herself, so she could take care of her siblings too, with his number hastily scrawled at the bottom.
‘Thank you...' She whispered to the wind as her cheeks reddened, and this time, not because of the cold.
Cookies & Milk
Tumblr media
Pairing: Dean x British!Reader Warnings: Established D/s, mind you don’t fall down the crack Word Count: 2,172. Summary: Dean buys you some cookies. You call them biscuits. Arguments ensue, lines are drawn and restraints are required. A/N: Have any of y’all met @winchesters-meaty-feast? She’s my pal and partner in crime. We have extensive conversations about many a subject but one day the most important topic arose. Biscuits. I’m a dunker, she is not. It almost tore us apart but luckily we’re stronger than that. Anyway, I drabbled this Dom/sub biscuit thing in our chat and the following CRACK is what snowballed from that. (This is meant to be dumb ok. Don’t come for me over this weirdness.)
Ao3 if you prefer.
Tumblr media
You should close your laptop.
In the late afternoon—underground where the time of day doesn’t matter—even then the light it’s emitting is too blue. Sure, you could turn down the brightness but it’s too little too late. Your eyes are already starting to ache from the strain.
You're not even doing anything important. You started scrolling a few hours ago; a news story that might have been something, but turned out to be nothing. Less than nothing, it was mundane. Dull as dishwater, as your mum might say. You would have closed your laptop then if it hadn’t been for that link at the bottom of the page. To another article, this time about an unexpected cold snap. This leads you to look up weather trends in Kansas, which becomes reading the articles on weather.com. Who even knew weather.com had articles? Still, they do and they’re very informative. The problem is that their data all points to it being cold as balls soon (your term, not theirs). So, now you’re shopping, with a pair of snow boots and two winter coats in your basket. And you’re debating a new scarf to put you over the free shipping threshold.
It is really time to shut your laptop before you go ahead and checkout. Dean hates having to pick up your parcels in town. Always complains that you have a problem. Pretty hypocritical considering the number of breweries he keeps in business. Besides he doesn’t even have a reason to complain, Marta loves seeing him, she lights up like a Christmas tree for him. You walk into the post office and you get a ton of side-eye, plus a ten-minute wait, but Dean? Well, he’s always at the front of her line.
You’re so engrossed in shopping that you don’t immediately look up at the sound of the bunker door. It’ll be Dean, you know that much. He’ll have a couple of brown bags from his supply run and you don't want to insult him by insinuating that he needs help.
It’s for the greater good anyway, the longer you sit here the more chance there is of you buying him snow boots too. Maybe he'll let you buy him a hat too.
Once he’s finished stomping his way down the stairs he sets the paper bags down next to you. It just so happens that's the exact moment you finally look up at him. A grateful smile on your face and over the top fluttering eyelashes—to remind him how loveable you are.
He shakes his head at how obvious you are. “I didn’t buy them for just you.” His unnecessary emphasis is all the permission you need.
“Is that smoke?” You sniff the air, one arm sliding inside the nearest bag, “must be the fire in your pants.”
He tries. Bless his heart. He tries to hold out. You can see him chewing the inside of his mouth as your arm moves about inside the bag to liberally finger his goods. The haul from the supermarket anyway. But he cannot resist your lame jokes and it ends the same as always. He cracks. A twitch of his lip, shaking his head and then an eye roll even Sam would be proud of.
“Other bag, Sherlock.”
“Ah-ha!” You grin when you switch to the other bag. Instead of fresh fruits and vegetables, you’re treated to food of the more processed variety. Plastic bags filled with crisps, a pie carton and, oh he really does love you, biscuits.
You slink back down to your screen, tearing the package open with your teeth as you do. Revitalised by the imminent influx of sugar. Dean sighs but doesn’t say another word. He picks up the rest of the groceries and carries them away. Presumably to the kitchen by the distant sounds of him putting everything away.
It’s another five minutes when he returns with a glass of milk that he puts down next to you. With a determined thump of glass on wood, as if the sound is an entire explanation.
“Thanks, but you know I don’t…”
“Take the damn milk.”
Normally you’d be irritated for being cut off mid-sentence, but it’s his exasperated tone that catches your attention. You even deign to look at him again, ignoring the popup that’s offering an extra 15% off if you enter your email. “You ok?”
He scratches at the scruff on his jaw while he tries to internally talk himself down from the ledge. “Nothing, nothing. Drink the milk, please.”
You look from him to the glass and frown at the white liquid. There’s nothing wrong with it per se. It looks like a perfectly good glass of milk, the kind you might see on a ‘got milk’ ad from the nineties. It’s not that you hate milk, you just prefer your biscuits to have a little bite. Dean should know that by now but if he’s forgotten then you are more than happy to remind him. “You eat your biscuits how you want, let me eat mine how I want.”
In your attempt to be rational you have failed to notice the desperation in his, 'please'. And now you’ve managed to tick him off.
“Cookies,” he grinds out.
“What?”
“They’re cookies. Dammit, you’ve lived here long enough to call a cookie a cookie.”
The outburst is not Dean’s fault. He’s not exactly hoarding MAGA caps and asking you to go back to England. No, this outrage is the product of a very specific joke that you might have taken too far.
Ordinarily, you switched back and forth between American and British all the time. As easy as breathing. You’d lived in the good ol’ US of A for long enough that your brain simply picked out the first word it could reach. A lot of the time it ended up being American without much intention, people understood better.
And then a few weeks back you’d been on the way to a hunt, sprawled in the back seat. Despite the fact that you were still strategizing with Sam you were comfortable. You could have fallen asleep right there if Sam hadn't kept talking. The word had slipped out on a whim. You called Baby’s trunk a boot.
Dean—being an absolute drama queen—had slammed on the brakes and eloquently asked what the fuck you called his Baby. Apparently, it was the first time you’d said that particular British word.
If you hadn’t found his reaction utterly hilarious that would have been the end of it. Except you did find it funny. The way his face soured, that little crease in the middle of his brow, he was so offended by four little letters. It was beautiful.
Now it’s been a few weeks of very purposeful language choices. Asking to borrow his mobile to make a call, or to wear his hoodie. And you’ll admit the ‘pip pip cheerio’ as he left the bunker earlier had been excessive. That isn’t even a real thing people say.
You’ve been torturing the poor guy with British slang. And because this isn’t the first time you’ve taken a joke too far, you’d usually hold your hands up and apologise. You’re good at apologising. He likes when you have to apologise because you always make it worth his while.
The problem is, biscuit had been an honest-to-god slip of the tongue. It had been the most natural word for your brain to conjure and so his anger seems a tad unjustified. Utterly out of proportion.
“It’s a biscuit.” You repeat as you take a bite, noticing the way his left eye seems to twitch at the crunch.
“It’s a cookie. It says right there on the packet. It’s a fucking sandwich cookie.” He points at the ripped plastic on the table for emphasis.
You sigh with the kind of effort that forces all the air from your lungs. “This country can’t spell half the time, why should I trust the packet?”
“Because you’re eating from it.”
He’s got you on a technicality. And he knows it. He knows it by the telling pause before you speak and the flash of panic in your eyes.
“So?”
It’s not an argument that’s going to win world-class debates but you couldn’t go ahead and let him have the last word.
Dean's problem now is he thinks he’s got you on the ropes, so he goes and gets cocky. He puffs out his chest a little and bites back a smirk.
“So? So… cookies and milk is as American as apple pie-”
“Invented by the Dutch.”
“-whatever. It’s a thing. Which means you gotta sit down, shut up and drink your fucking milk.”
You always love it when he does that. Argues his way to a conclusion whether he’s right or not. It’s kind of ridiculously hot.
Or at least that’s how you justify putting your half-eaten biscuit down. Slowly rising from your chair and crawling onto his lap. You lean in, slow enough to tease him, letting your breath settle over his skin as you whisper in his ear. “I know a way we could settle this.”
Tumblr media
“What’re you doing?” He manages between teeth that are grinding against each other. The muscles in his arms are tense where he’s pulling at the rope that holds him.
Any other night and you might calm him down at this point. Remind your good boy that he shouldn’t hurt himself. Or depending on the game you’d remind him who he belongs to, who he’s foolishly directing his anger towards. But there’s no soothing touches or harsh reminders bestowed upon Dean tonight. This game is different. This is a battle for dominance, unlike one you’ve played before.
For the first time, he wants to win as much as you do.
There’s no mutual satisfaction in the room because you’re both out for blood. Where blood equals being right about snack goods. And unfortunately for Dean, he didn’t figure it out before he let you tighten the ropes around his wrists.
“I thought that was obvious, baby. I wanted something sweet.”
His eyes flick between the glass of milk he’d seen you carry in and the cookies plated up beside it. Well, you’d call them biscuits but that’s not what this argument is about.
“Don’t you dare.” There’s a threat in his voice.
For a moment it surprises you and you’re quick to counter him, “I’ll do what I like.” Your tone is reminder enough for him to remember his place.
He retreats a little, gives an inch so that you can take a mile. A breath rattles through his chest doing little to calm his tightly wound body. At the very least, he switches anger for desperation. Dean knows you love it when he pleads, “please Princess. Please, I’m begging you. Dunk it.”
Your entire body glows a little when he calls you by your name. The change in his attitude only urges you onwards though, with a smirk turning up the corners of your mouth.
Your hand finds a treat, fingers picking it up with deliberate, delicate movements. His eyes are wide as he watches you hover the biscuit over the glass as if maybe you’ll appease him. The whimper he lets out when you bypass the drink is almost fulfilling enough that you’re no longer hungry. Almost.
The room takes on an eerie silence as you part your lips and take a bite. A loud, crunchy bite. Crumbs fall onto the table beneath you—probably in slow motion— and chewing only seems to increase the volume.
“Son of a bitch.” He mutters as you swallow, “you’re crazy.”
You hadn’t planned on it but you walk across the room then, half a biscuit in your hand and a satisfied smile on your face. He’s slumped in his chair a little. He’s defeated since he knows he won’t defeat the knots keeping him in place.
“Come on, try it for me.”
“Go to hell.”
It's your turn to roll your eyes, “don’t be so dramatic, you’ve been to hell. This can’t be that bad.”
As you reason with him, you slide into his lap again, which will be torture enough because he can’t touch you. Except you also hold the biscuit to his lips.
“Please. For me. Be my good boy.” You coo as if you're not toying with him.
His thighs twitch beneath you at the use of his nickname and, because he’s always your good boy, he opens his mouth.
KTO TbI? - Who are you
Peter sighed looking around the jet bored. They have been on the jet for a few hours and still have a few more till they reach their destination in Italy. Having to chase after a congressman that they think is working with Hydra or someone ,Peter wasn’t really listening in debriefing. They got tipped off that this guy and some other businessmen in the US are working with people about some type of atomic bomb. So him , Steve , Tony, Nat, Bucky , Sam , and Y/n are all going.  Peter was excited after not being about to go on missions for a while. But right now he’s bored out of his mind and can’t fall asleep. He looked around the jet and saw almost everyone was asleep. Laughing a bit at the fact that Sam and Bucky are passed out leaning on each other. He could hear the hush voices of Tony and Steve talking in the cockpit. Not understand why they don’t just shut the door to talk. His eyes then land on Y/n. She sat across him and nat reading, or that’s what he thinks. She's holding a book and her head is pointed down. But with her face covered it’s hard to tell. He thinks back to the year she has been with them, she never once was seen without her face cover. Sam told him she also always wears it when they meet her. But Pete wasn’t there for that so he doesn’t know much about it.
Year or so ago
Nat and Steve rush to the jet as people shoot at them. Tony and Sam were already there waiting for them. Tony had the jet ready so as soon as Steve and Nat stepped on he could take off. As soon as they jumped on Sam was yelling at Tony to go as he closed the door. “Everyone okay?”, tony asked from the cockpit. Both Sam and Steve say yes, But nAt yell out No clutching her thigh. As she jumped into the jet she was hit. Sam and Steve rushed over to look at her. Tony joined putting the jet on autopilot. “What happened?”. “I was shot jumping in. The bullet is lodged in my thigh.”, Nat says through clenched teeth. As Sam and Steve start to help her, an alarming noise from the cockpit brings Tony going back. “Guys! We have a problem!”, Tony yells as he takes over controls again. “What is it?”, Steve rushes to see the radar. There were two plans following them. Then the plain started shaking as the two plains started shooting at them. “What the hell is going on?”, Sam yells. “We have company! You two hold on it’s going to be very bumpy! You want me to take over Tony?”, Tony nods as they quickly switch so Steve can fly. Tony starts taping on a tablet looking through security stuff and sending shots their way as well. “Huh Steve?! They have a missile!”. “Damn! I won’t be able to out fly it and If we send one it won’t end well for us.”, Steve yells trying to think of something. “Shit it’s coming! Let's go, the cabin is strong and will have a better safety chance.”, Tony turns on auto pilot and grapes Steve rushing to the medical cabin with Sam and Nat. “Hold on!”, Steve yells just before the missile hit the jet, sending them tumbling down. The A.I of the jet Shut down the medical cabinet as the rest of the jet starts falling apart. Tony seals up his suit, as Steve holds Nat close using the shield to help protect her from anything that flies as they drop. Tony was right the cabin didn’t destroy fully as they hit the ground. The sides were crushed in some and the doors were crushed which meant that all electricity was cut off and destroyed to open the doors. Steve looked around after a bit of coming back to it. The crash knocked all three of them out. He moves around them to the crush door and starts to bang against it trying to get it open. But it wouldn’t bulge. Using his shield he finally got the door to slightly crack. Steve was able to shove his fingers through and push the door open enough to get out. He then drag each of them out laying them out of the ground away from the crash. They were supported by the pieces of jet on fire. In a snow forest area that looked to be surrounded by mountains. As Steve looks around he is meet with a blade to his neck. He looks up see someone standing on the other end of the blade but can’t really make them out. They wear dark jeans and a bag sweater type shirt. With a thick winter coat over it. They had gloves on their hands and a wrap that covered their face. “KTO TbI?”, they say. “I’m sorry I don’t understand what your saying.”, Steve says dropping his shield and holding his hands up. Showing the person he was no harm. The person tilted their head then looked down where his mask laid. “Captain America?”, They lower the sword but not fully putting it away. Not moving Steve nods. “Please help me. We were shot down out of the sky. I’m fine but my friends are knocked out. One has a bullet wound and needs medical help the other I’m not sure but the crash knocked them out.”. He points his head to the three body’s. The person looks them over and then at him. Seeing that the others were the famous Iron man , blackwidow, and the falcon. People they only heard about and saw glimpses of when having to go to town. They put the samurai away. “Y/n.”, A female voice says sticking her hand out to help Steve up. He smiles at her taking her hand. “Are you able to open his suit? He will most likely be easier to wake up and not have a concussion.”, Y/n says pointing to Tony as she looks over the other two. Steve works on getting the suit open , as Y/n looks over Nat’s injury. She takes her jacket off putting around the female as most of her suit is torn. She then checks over the next guy. Sam, as Steve told her. Y/n tries waking him up but he’s completely out and has a concussion. “Tony?”, Y/n turns to see Steve got his suit open and is shaking the man. She steps over to them checking him out. “He’s lucky, No concussion or brain damage. I have an idea to wake him up but you might want to back up.”, She says standing up. Grabbing the small bottle from her jacket , she pours the water on his face. Steve and Her stand back as Tony jumps up to the cold water hitting his face. “What the hell?! Where am i? What’s going on?”, He screams looking around till his eye’s land on Steve. “Sorry Tony. We had to get you up to make sure you're okay.”. Tony just nods looking around at the jet that’s on fire. “ It’s cold out here and it’s about to get colder as the sun goes down. We should really get them inside and warmed up. Especially her with the blood loss and the cold weather , it’s dangerous to keep her out here any longer. My cabin isn’t too far from here.”, Y/n says turning back to the other two , still passed out, avengers. “Wait, who are you?”, Tony asks, finally noting the person in all dark clothes standing next to Steve. “Tony this is Y/n. She’s helping us.” Steve says turning to Y/n thinking the best way to carry the two. “I’ll grab Sam. Tony got Nat.”. Deciding now isn’t the time to be asking questions he just nods. Y/n helps him pick Nat up making sure her wound isn’t touched and wrapped up. She then leads them away from the crash into the forest. It was about a 15 min walk to her cabin. From the outside it looks like a very old abandoned cabin. But inside was nice and warm and nicely furnished. Also somewhat modern. She had electricity. Lights , fridge, stove top, modern bathroom. A modern Cabin which you wouldn’t expect all the way out here. The only thing she didn’t have was tv or phone or anything like that. “ You can take him upstairs the room on the right. He’s most likely going to be out for a while. Her , set her on the table. We need to get that bullet out and sewn up.”, she tells them as she cleans off the table. Tony carefully sets Nat down and starts taking his suit off and reaches the Avengers Tower. Y/n rushed finding her first aid kit and getting some hot water. Once Steve gets back down stairs he helps her cut away Nats suit at her leg. He just watches as Y/n cleans the wound and starts to dig out the bullet.  Y/n worked quick as she got the bullet out and cleaned the wound out and put some medicine in it. Making sure no infection grows. She then sews up the hole and wraps it up. “Done. You can take her right down that hallway. Make sure you wrap her up in the blankets. I’m gonna go check up on the other one.”, Y/n tells Steve pointing down the hallway next to the stairs before grabbing a few things and rushing up the stairs. As she disappears upstairs , Steve walks out of the room to tony. “Are you able to get a hold of anyone?”. “No , the crash damaged the suit. The A.I is responding to the suit but not to anything else. But I think I can fix it from some parts from the jet and an internet connection.”, Tony says. “What’s up with this woman , by the way?”. “Y/n? What about her?”, Steve asks watching as Tony takes part in his suit. “You don’t think it’s weird that this person, in the middle of nowhere and who speaks perfect English, is just willing to help us and bring us to her house?”, Tony asks. “Actually I had your captain at the end of a blade before he asked for help. Also if you must know I’m actually from America original and know who the Avengers are.” Y/n says coming down stairs and joining them at the island in the kitchen/ dining area. Steve laughs as Tony lets out a sorry. “Are you able to contact for help or is there anything you need?”, she says looking over everything. “Just a few things I think I can recover from the Jet and you don’t happen to have an internet connection do you?”. “No, and the closest town doesn’t have anywhere with the best connection. Your best bet is to travel about 10 miles northwest there is a small hydra base on the border in Russia.”. “Russia? We aren’t in Russia?”Steve asked. Y/n Shakes her head , “No this is Kazakhstan. Like I said my cabin is about 10-20 miles from the border of Russia.”. Steve nods thinking of a plan, “Okay why don’t we rest tonight , get what you need tomorrow tony. Then figure out from there.”. They all nod agreeing. “If you move your stuff to the table I’ll make us something to eat.”, Y/n says, starting to pull things out of her fridge.
After dinner Tony kept working, stopping every now and again to sleep. But only to sleep for a bit before waking up and working again. Steve and Y/n take turns sleeping and checking up on Sam and Nat. Around 3 am Nat woke up as Y/n was checking her bandage. Seeing this person with their face covered Nat tried jumping up but found her not able to use her body till Y/n calmed her down and told her what was going on and even got Steve in the room. Sam didn’t wake up till 7 am and walked downstairs , oh high alert, to Tony Steve , Nat and someone else sitting at a table eating breakfast. Y/n introduced herself while handing him some meds saying they will help with his head. He then sat down to eat as they let him know what’s going on. Tony couldn’t help as his eye’s kept going to Y/n. She kept the wrap on around her face and to eat she lifted the bottom. But making sure none of her face showed. But What Tony didn’t know was that Y/n was looking at him too and knew what he was thinking. Feeling uncomfortable she puts the fork down and pushes her plate away.  After breakfast Y/n got Nat some clothes to wear and dug out some old clothes of her fathers for boys. Mainly pulling out winter clothes. They then all headed out to the site of the crash. “Are you sure you're going to be okay to go?”, Y/n asked Nat. “Yeah this is nothing. Pulse the meds are helping keep the pain down. Just can’t walk fast.”. Y/n just nodded and decided to stay with her just in case. Up a head a bite Sam , Steve and Tony were whispering to each other. “Are we sure we can trust this girl?”, Sam has taken a quick glance back to Y/n and Nat. “I mean if she wants to hurt us or anything she would have. I mean she had me at the end of a blade and all of you were knocked out. If she didn’t help there's no telling what would have happened to you or Nat.”, Steve says to Sam. “I mean she knows where a Hydra base is and knows that it’s easy to hack into.”, Tony cuts in. “Why don’t you ask her? And if you two are so worried just keep an eye on her.``, Steve huffs. Tony and Sam just nod. A few minutes later they get to the crash site. There was still lots of smoke from where a fire started. But lucky it was all out. “Okay we need to be careful of inhaling the smoke as well as that some of these pieces can still be very hot.” Steve says. “We need to find the cockpit and see if anything from it survived.” , Tony says, starting to move stuff around. Everyone jumped in looking around. Y/n stayed with Nat helping her, after all she is still a bit weak. “This looks like it’s the head of the plane.”, Nat points out to the crushed piece. They both start moving things out of the way. “Tony! We Found it!” Nat yells to Tony. She winces as she tries to move more things to fully uncover the computers. Y/n reach out to her ,” Hey , take it easy, you're freshly hurt. Here sit down.``, Y/n helps her to lean against a pile of the plain as the other three come rushing over. Tony starts taking part of the computer to see what was salvageable. “How long is it going to take you? We are going to need to get her back soon for some meds and a re-bandage.”, Y/n ask stepping over to Tony. “It’s going to be a bite. There's a lot of pieces to plain computers and I'm the only one who knows how to and what to look for.”, Tony explains not even slowing his movement once bite. Y/n gets on her knees next to him and starts taking a part more of the computer. “What do we need?”. Tony looks at her shocked , “You know your way around?”. “You really think i’d hack a hydra base , the second most secure place, if I didn’t”, Tony laughed at the smugness in her voice. He then starts to explain what he needs. Glade he didn’t have to dumb it down for her. With her help they got all they needed in about 20 minutes. Once they got back, Steve helped Y/n to get Nat laying on the couch and changing the bandages. Y/n then gave her some water and Advil to help the pain. Which ended up knocking Nat out. She then turned her attention to Tony and helped him with the tablet like comtraption to get a hold of someone. Tony was impressed with her skills and how she kept up with him. “Steve, Can we keep her,please?”, Tony asks as Y/n explains another better way to build it. Y/n and Steve just laugh at him. “I’m in too for keeping her, This is the best damn sandwich I have ever had.”, Sam jumps in as he chows down on a second sandwich she made for lunch. “Sandwich?”, Nat pops up. Y/n laughs softly grabbing the one she set aside for her and a glass of water and bringing it over to her. Nat to one bite and moaned at the taste, “I agree. We keep her.”. “I’m sorry about them.”, Steve says laughing. “It’s alright, it’s been nice to have you guys around.”, she says putting the dishes in the sink to be washed later. “You don’t have much human interaction due you?”, Sam asked getting up to put his plate away. “Since the passing of my father no. I had a small bite but they turned out to be bad people.”. It clicks with all of them, “Hydra'', Nat lets out. Y/n nods, “ I escaped them a few years back and have been running from them but keeping an eye on them as well. there for Hacking them. Lucky for me they are to stupid to think I'd stay close to them.”. “ A brain like yours I’m not at all surprised they are after you.”, Tony jokes. “Actually they want me for my ability to not only control the minds of people and their bodies. But also cause I can hold an object and see through the person's eyes if it belonged to or is special to. Sorry it’s hard to explain, basically I can see the danger coming.:”, Y/n explains. They were all shocked. They have heard of mind control and mind reading. They do have Wanda  you can read minds as well. But not someone you can see danger from the persons eyes with just touching something. “Sorry I didn’t say sooner but…”, Y/n starts. “It’s okay we get it. You were protecting yourself.”, Steve speaks up. Her opening up helped settle their trust over her a bite. “DOne!” Tony breaks the silence that fell over the room. “It’s done. Tomorrow we head to the base and hack some connections and then we should be home within 2 days”,Tony says, showing them all the tablets. The rest of the day they just sit around and talk as Tony and Y/n make some last minute touches to the wire they will need to plug into a computer. Over dinner/after they talk about a plan. “Needing to be plugged in we have to go inside. Y/n already told us that it’s a small base. So taking them out shouldn’t be an issue. Only thing left is weapons. You don’t happen to have any due you?”, Steve turns to Y/n. Y/n stands up going to the study she has. They all follow her. She grabs a remote looking thing. Turning back to them, “ I hope this means we all trust each other completely.”. They all nod, Y/n has given a single thing not to trust them. Hell she saved them and is helping them get home. Y/n pressed a button and two of the bookshelves that stood tall and next to each other, moved apart and forward came a wall filled with guns. “The bottom draws have ammo and bullet proof backpacks.”, she explains. They each prepare a bag, then decide to go ahead and get some rest and get up extra early to be able to scope out the area fully. As the others get settled , Y/n sneaks out to the back patio. She sits on the steps and watches the rest of the sun set and the stars starting to come out. “You okay?” Steve asks, coming to sit next to her. “Yeah, Just going to miss you guys. It was nice having people around again. I never realized how lonely I was before now.” Y/n says letting out a little laugh. Steve smiles at her watching her side profile that was hidden behind the face cover. But he can still tell she was looking up. “Thank you by the way. You didn’t have to help us but you did. And saved Nat. She probably wouldn’t have made it if she stayed out there in her consciousness any longer.”. Steve says and watches as the stars start to shine bright as they come out. “No problem, It’s not everyday some gets to say they help the avengers.”, Y/n jokes and they both laugh. A small silence settles before Y/n sighs. “My dad is probably looking down at me jealous as ever right now.”, Y/n laughs out dryly. Steve turns to her with an eyebrow raised. She turned to look at him. “You were his favorite superhero. He used to go on and on about ‘THE CAPTAIN AMERICA’.”. Steve laughs shaking his head. “That man I swear the way he talked about you I thought he was gay for a bit or just in love with you. He had all kinds of news papers about you. And action figures , all kinds of stuff. Hell even baseball cards.” . “Sounds like someone else I know.”, they both laugh softly. Then Y/n wraps her arms around her knees pulling them closer to her holding back her tears. “He passed before you were unfrozen. Didn’t even get to hear that you were alive.”. Steve turned to her and reached out, rubbing her back. “I’m sure he knows and his smiling down knowing his daughter risked herself to help not only me but other superheroes. I would even say being a hero herself.”. Y/n laughs standing up. “Come we should get to bed.” , Y/n holds her hand out to help Steve up. They head into their rooms.  As soon as Y/n entered her room she locked it and started taking off the face mask. Her hand went up and touched her checks which hurt from laughing and smiling. She hasn’t felt this way in years. Steve put a smile on her face , even though he didn’t get to see it, that hasn’t been on her face since that death of her father. She looks in a mirror seeing a rose blush over her face. The smile fell down as her eyes ran over the part of her face that made her keep her face covered around not only others but even herself.
Part 1 of 2! I Hope to have the second one posted tomorrow or the next day along with the next part of crazy in love hopefully. - MM
