haikyuu boys being emo

a/n: in honor of myself going to an emo concert soon ~ here are my thoughts.

includes: bokuto, kageyama, tsukiishima, kenma, tendou

bokuto:

okay despite probably not being full fledged emo, i feel like i had to mention him

bokuto would probably be in “life is only despair” mode after a loss

mans fully sits in the back of the bus and leans his head against the windows while blasting whatever comes up when he searches “sad emo music playlist”

no one is allowed to sit next to him except for akaashi - MAYBE

he blasts whatever spotify offers in it’s cumulative playlist with this big pout on his face

this leads to him mainly knowing medium to slow paced songs but those with clearly heart-wrenching lyrics

bokuto also probably just knows songs, compared to being an actual fan of the bands who wrote them

mans is on the verge of TEARS when iris by the goo goo dolls comes on and he remembers how he missed that one spike that probably could’ve turned the game around PLSS

kageyama:

so much of kags’ life revolves around angst man

and i mean, he does almost have an emo fringe going for him LOL

but at the same time, i don’t really think kageyama would be one to make his music taste too big of a part of his personality - that’s what volleyball is. so you probably could t tell he was a little emo from the way he dresses.

(outside of a school uniform, mans probably lives in athleisure).

ain’t no way he didn’t manage to cope with music

i think we’re not surprised that he gets kinda angry sometimes so i feel like he might turn to a lot of music with screaming

when he discovered it, something about it felt kind of cathartic, like ‘here’s some guy screaming and voicing out my frustrations for me’

he also found comfort in the isolation that this kind of music talked about

after a frustrating (but productive practice) he probably listens to pierce the veil to let off some steam

(hinata wanted to walk home with him once but mans just kept walking out the door bc the music was so damn loud in his ear)

tsukishima:

this guy lmao

another relatively aNgStY bOy are we surprised

i think he would delve a lot more into the music he listens to and he’d listen to the most bands out of anyone here

he’s also shown a lot with his headphones so it’s a bigger part of his life compared to others

he’s a man of culture- one of his favorite band being my chemical romance because of the band’s theatricality but also tremendously well-written lyrics

i feel like his music taste would lightly influence how he dresses too

tsukishima probably owns a wide variety of black band tees, somewhat fitted black jeans, one very worn in pair of converse

but i doubt he’d wear everything together, but it would be mixed with all of his other clothes

like if you paid attention, you’d probably be able to figure out his music taste

he thought about getting a piercing once but backed out after seeing a piercing video

kenma:

he’d probably have a pretty broad range of bands he listens to

i feel like kenma would enjoy paramore and it’d lowkey influence what color he’d dye his hair

he also found music as an escape that he needed sometimes

kenma probably doesn’t listen to so much screaming so maybe he’d gravitate towards fall out boy and secondhand serenade

OH and he learns some ukulele because he gets into twenty one pilots at some point

tendou:

maybe it’s because he’s my fave but i really think he’d get into all of this - the vibe would suit him SO WELL

he already has the red hair that he either styles up, but also looks SO GOOD when he just lets it hang down

he’s eccentric so i think he’s just hits shuffle and let’s spotify pick what he listens to

he just has a really big playlist filled with music from so many bands (and he’s still adding to it)

tendou isn’t so angsty but he likes how fired up music can get and how such a sick guitar solo feels like his bones are coming alive

my oh my do black skinny jeans look good on him - he cut the holes on the knees himself lol

DEFINITELY HAS PIERCINGS

mans got one of those side lip piercings and it’s over for anyone when he smirks he’s so damn hot

i think he’d go to the most concerts out of all the boys, he’s tall enough to be able to see the band wherever he is in the pit and he’s not so easily pushed when things get rowdy

definitely loves the feeling of the speakers blasting music into his soul and moshing with a crowd

(fun side fact: he gets ushijima to come to a concert once and mans sticks out from the crowd so badly. he doesn’t understand why the lead singer is screaming, is this music? whY did someone just push him? he ends up going to the back of the pit bc he can see anyway and it’s less violent)

I think the only obvious fact about sns is their apparent love for each other. Im a little confused on their possible homosexuality, but its not as obvious as you say it is. You need to look twice to catch them. I wish you would elaborate on where it is so obvious.

I have written about it several times. You can search SNS tags on my blog. For both Naruto and Sasuke.

You are misstating me a lot. I have always maintained that their sexuality is subtly shown, subtle as compared to the usual shounen tropes. But shown nonetheless. It has been obvious to me because I am quite exposed to LGBTQ+ cinema, I talk about these films often on this blog. So the usual tropes used in gay coming of age drama and love stories are obvious to me. I have never said that it is obvious to everyone. I am always talking about subtleties and layering. I don't know what content of mine you have been reading. Lol.

Look man, even if you weren't exposed to these themes, the story itself is written pretty intuitively and it certainly is written to encourage curiosity in the average audience. Sure, not everything is made crystal clear to the audience deliberately, but it's crazy how blatantly layered it is visually and narratively. Even during my first watch, i would get puzzled or hooked a lot of times and curiosity made me mad. While i could surely recognise the tropes, that it was shounen had sent me for a toss, it was certainly not easy to digest. But then I remembered watching Cardcaptor Sakura and I felt better lol. It was quite a strange experience to see a gay love story in what's practically a kids show meant for boys. I know how genres work. But I waited until the end to go looking for fan discourses, I wanted a watching experience unperturbed by extraneous things. Most of all, Kishi's storytelling hooked me, he is a hell of a writer honestly. He really knows where to strike and what to use to strike with. That brutal brutal beautiful man. Only a truly intuitive, empathetic and sensitive person can write something like that. And talented af to boot.

Anyway, honestly, many sensitive readers or viewers could tell that there was something not quite right with the way the romance was superficially set up in the story. Naruto and Sakura, Sakura and Sasuke, Naruto and Hinata. It was a subliminal response. It takes some time to dismantle it in your head, but you get used to it with time. When reading the manga, I did struggle initially because it was a new medium for me, i settled down soon enough. It was very enjoyable. And it only reinforced everything I knew with the anime even more acutely.

One of my fav fellow Naruto fans, clocked it out at the age 13. A child. Simply curiosity and an advanced sense of comprehension. And a looooot of others could tell in their first watch. That they are gay has been the running narrative since the beginning of this manga, many fans have been making memes and jokes about it, SNS communities and channels have millions of subscribers the world over. And they are not analysis bloggers like me, lol. You really think it's that unclear?

Look I am not taking away from anyone if they cannot get it at first glance. Some can, some cannot. There are several factors. Depends on how sharp your comprehension is or how experienced you are, or how exposed you are to gay tropes and narrative devices. But the good thing is, one can always develop their senses, train them, discipline their eyes and ears and mind, to focus more and pay attention, ask questions. It's how you enjoy media in all its glory.

Naruto inspires so much in people, so many from the queer community relate to Sasuke and Naruto, so many closeted folks see themselves in Naruto and Sasuke, and are comforted by it, inspired even. Representation matters. So much empathy to go around. I am not even the first person to have started talking about it lol, how come you missed all the others? It has been the topic of hot debates for years all over the world man. They have been talking about how obvious it has been from almost the get go. You can't measure everyone with the same lenses. Not everyone would have the same skill sets.

The short of it is, lol, it's obvious if you know what you are looking at. It's a little confusing and you have to look twice if you don't know what you are looking at but are curious nonetheless so you invest and then find out that way. But if you are closed off and unreceptive, you probably won't have the benefit of this lovely story in all its radiance. Or any story.

Hello!! Stumbled across your blog while binging Cod content. I absolutely love you writing. My favorite is the medical history of 141. I did an internship at a pharmacy for a few months and seeing drug names once again was pretty cool (ciprofloxacin is my fav but that's a conversation for another time lol). I really like how you inculcate pharmacology in your writing. This is my first time making a request since I'm fairy new to tumblr. I would like to request a pairing if that's fine. I'm 20, islander thus I have tan skin ,dark brown eyes and extremely long hair but it appears short since it's very curly lol. I am 5'3, wear glasses and on the curvier side but fairly muscular since I do my best to go to the gym daily. I'm have a blue belt in karate and love martial arts. I'm also very good at yoga and try practicing it everyday since it's relaxing and energizing for me. I have a dark academia, fairly unique and elegant style. I dress modestly and LOVE coats, trousers but I love dresses as well. I love designing my own clothes. I recently got a black ,mermaid cut floor-length dress with a leg slit and pearl sleeves (basically it looks like the dress it held up by a chain of pearls)stitched. MBTI- INTP Zodiac - Scorpio

I love reading, drawing and playing cards. I play cards nearly everyday-my favorite games include gin rummy, go fish and Uno. I like drawing surreal and horrific designs such as monsters and nightmarish things lol. Despite drawing terrifying things, I am IN LOVE with goofy and cute things. I have a collection of cute erasers and stationary shaped like tiny dinosaurs, fruits, vegetable and cacti. I am an avid reader. I will read anything that piques my interest. My house is filled with books. There's at least a book in each room. I generally enjoy fictional books. I also love cooking and baking. I LOVE spicy food. I am always trying new recipes and cooking techniques. I love trying new food that I see on menus despite not liking lots of stuff sometimes (I don't mind though. It's part of the experience :D). How you met: You had vaguely known of the scotsman when you found out he was joining your group on vacation. You and your friends had planned a trip to New Zealand to accomplish a few bucket list items such as bungee jumping, zip lining, skydiving, and parasailing. It just happened that you and Johnny hit it off as you overlooked the Nevis River Valley and prepared for a once-in-a-lifetime jump. "Shite," he swore as you looked at him, "higher up than I thought." You laughed as your guide checked your rope and restraints. "That makes it even better," you said with a devilish smile as you looked at the frightened man. "I've jumped out of planes before but this is crazy," he exclaimed as you began to see your friends start to jump off with screams of adrenaline. "You can hold my hand," you offered as you stuck a hand out, "I've done this before and it's a great rush." He took your offer as the person to your left jumped. "Here we go," you yelled as you both walked off the platform and dove head first into the ravine. Your ears were immediately filled with his screams as you laughed and took in the gorgeous view. You smiled as you looked up at him and saw the hairs of his mohawk hand upside down. "Yer aff yer heid," he swore at you as the adrenaline began to wear off. "You think that now but you should see me when we go skydiving later," you joked and gave him a wink as he mentally prepared for the next extreme activity.

A peek into your relationship: Despite the distance, your boyfriend loved coming to your house. Whether it was a new book, a clothing project in the works, or the smell of spicy food from a new recipe, there was always something to entertain him. This time, he was having you do one of those drawing challenges were you practiced different illustrators styles. "Johnny hold still!" you giggled as he posed for your portrait. You lightly kicked him with your foot as you sat on opposite sides of the loveseat. "You done yet?" he kept asking as you shook your head and sketched out his face with pen. Eventually after what he said was "forever" you unveiled the finished paper. You could see his eyes travel from each one of the sketches until he set the paper down with an unreadable look. "What?" you questioned as you inched closer to him. "I love it but," he trailed off, obviously for the dramatic, "I don't know if I should be concerned that the Tim Burton and Junji Ito styles are horrifying good." You took a moment to laugh before pecking him on the cheek. "Just because I'm good a horror, doesn't mean anything," you replied and he took the opportunity to hold you in a hug on his lap. He kissed your forehead before replying. "You're a crazy one," he joked and you rolled your eyes. "Yeah but at least I'm yours, Mactavish. And don't talk about crazy when you're the one with a mohawk and no rock band in sight!"

This week’s Monday Philm is PSH’s only animated feature, the Australian claymation Mary and Max (2009), dir. Adam Elliot. Big year for animated!Phil—his episode of Arthur came out just a few months later!

I think this is only the second or third time I’ve watched Mary and Max, but I always need a bit of an adjustment period to get used to the style. I enjoy animated films and I especially appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating these lengthy stop-motion pieces (especially after watching the little “making of” doc with director Adam Elliot), but I don’t mesh at all with Elliot’s self-described “chunky-wonky” style. Visually one of the more challenging films for me to watch (probably because I am a bit like Max!).

A very good story, though. Ugly and beautiful, I said last time. Both Mary and Max’s stories dig around uncomfortably deep in my own head and childhood and memories. A lot of themes I connect with but don’t really feel like elaborating on right now. I’m listening to the late, great Daniel Johnston as I write this and Max reminds me of him, lol.

I was going through some old interviews this morning and found one where Phil said he recorded basically everything for Max in a single day, from a recording booth in London while Skyping with the director and crew in Australia. I’ve been thinking about that all day—he put in a few hours of work one day in 2008 and 15 years later it’s still having a deep, visceral impact on so many. I’ve read a lot of reviews from people who really cherish this film and honor it as the underrated gem it is. It’s not my favorite movie but it does represent autism and anxiety and loneliness and depression in a surprisingly real way, which I suppose is one of the advantages of animation. Maybe it’s easier to be truthful with complicated themes when you can literally shape them frame-by-frame with your bare hands.

“He had the most beautiful voice of any modern American actor. (Really, listen to it—it's amazing),” Tom Carson wrote about Philip in 2014. Whether it’s Lester Bangs’ vocal fry or Allen Mellencamp audibly caving in on himself or Lancaster Dodd’s commanding speeches or Phil’s own real voice—sort of slow, low, mumbling, gears turning in his head, until he catches the thought and it practically bursts out of him, chasing after it, voice raised, often booming, easy to laugh, a slight New York accent, such a unique inflection you can hear his tongue punctuate certain words and sounds so clearly—it’s one of his most outstanding trademarks. That’s what really makes Mary and Max special to me, is hearing PSH use that deep, lovely voice to explore a new medium. It’s almost easy to forget it’s him and I totally understand how people watch it without realizing he’s in it. Tbh I might love what he does in Arthur even more—it’s so camp—but he’s got such a rich voice, so good for any kind of voice acting, and it’s neat he got a taste of it doing this film.

Always thinking about that Esquire interview when Phil said, “I don't think I've made anything my kids can watch until they're like 40... It's funny, because I did a voice in an animated movie called Mary and Max. And a guy, like, kills himself in it. The one animated movie I make is for adults.”

life feels hard and unforgiving sometimes so here’s some highlights just from a single day from last week to remind anyone out there that life is still worth living and enjoying, and there are plenty of kind people :)

I stopped at the grocery store (different from where I work) to kill time waiting for my second bus. I found some jeans in the clothing section, but wanted to know how much they were, so i went to the dressing rooms where two older women working then had a friendly battle to see who could log into their scanner first to check the price, it was really fun

After the second bus, theres a short half mile walk to my work, and as i was passing by businesses on the way (it was like 9:30am), one fast food worker opened her window (the drive thru was empty) and waived for me to come over. I ran over and she said she loved my outfit and asked where I got my stuff so I told her the goodwill I go to and where the best clearance stuff I find is. It’s also been heavily raining recently so I told her where the best raincoats are in town

I’m at work doing my (retail) job, and a lady asks me for help. She starts apologizing (a lot) because she couldn’t find an exact photo of what she was looking for, and I told her she doesn’t need to apologize at all! I said if she wanted to stop reflexively apologizing all the time, she can change up the words she uses like I do. When I’m doing something and it takes a while, I say “thank you for helping me/ thank you for waiting,” and it usually works really well. It’s also my job to help people find things in the store so there’s no need to feel guilty about asking for help! In the end I found the bookshelf she wanted and she said that it was good advice that she wants to practice more

Whenever I find something broken or unusable, i bring it up to the front desk and put a sticky note on it saying what’s wrong, usually with a little frowny face. My manager saw me doing this finally and said “so its YOU who’s been leaving this stuff up here!” And i was like oh no! Do you want me to stop? And she replied “nah, honestly I think it’s funny and I like finding this stuff up here. Just wish people would stop breaking our shit.” This new note was on a open bag of chips and said “someone was eating me like a feral animal and then decided to leave the bag :( “

Sometimes when someone breaks an item, especially glass or ceramic, they feel bad and start to try to clean it up themselves. I, trying to be as friendly as possible but still firm, go “NOOO nO don’t touch it, sTOPP >:0 its sharp you need to stay safe” in the most silly way possible to try to distract from the fact that they feel bad. I call for someone to grab a broom and guard the broken pieces while looking at the customer like 👀 dont you dare touch any of the pieces this isn’t your job LOL. I know how quickly one small thing (dropping & breaking something at the store) can really hurt your mood (speaking from experience) so Im very over-the-top silly when it comes to cleaning these accidents. Dropping shit happens! Don’t feel bad lol im rushing in to clean it up >:)

While at the front of the store I was approached by an older man and he said, “I’m sorry if this comes off as rude, but where is the nearest real grocery store?” And when I tell you i SNORTED and said “nah that’s not rude, I don’t get any of my meat or produce from here,” and told him the nearest store with actual fresh produce and meat was a little bit further down the street.

Whenever I’m working and friends come in, they pretend not to know me to some degree so I can put on my retail face for a moment and “help” them while they tell me briefly about their day :) and then I actually tell them wherever the stuff they’re looking for actually is located in the store lol

I get asked pretty frequently how I do my hair and how I get it to stay like that, (medium length curly hair that actually holds its curls), to the point where I made a little diagram i keep on my phone of my routine + products I use and recommend, and show it to them to take a picture of or airdrop it to them :)

It was close to closing for the front cafe department (i am trained for multiple departments and switch during the day sometimes lol) and one of our last customers for the night was very unsure of what she wanted to drink. Since we throw out most of the tea for the night, i broke out the little sample cups and let her try allll of them so she could narrow down her choices. Halfway through trying them, she asked “do you do this all the time?” And I was like “no, usually it’s too busy, but we’re about to close and I want you to get a good experience & drink out of this” :) she laughed at that and decided on a peach tea lemonade w/ another fruit drink mixed in it.

Leaving work I went to say goodbye to a handful of my coworkers, as per my routine, and my one coworker always gives me a cup of whip cream and a fork. I never asked her to do this but she’s started it as part of her routine so I’ve accepted it into mine. I take the cup home with me and put the whip cream on a little bowl of fruit every night :)

Can you explain to me the point of music reviews? Like that one white YouTuber guy who does them lol. I get movies and tv shows because that's more of a time investment and I think there's a more technical understanding of how a movie or TV show is ""good"", but isn't music more subjective? I don't get how people can listen to a song and not know whether or not they like it enough and they have to listen to someone else's opinion to tell them what to think. It's just a song, what do they lose from a song being "bad" besides not listening to it?

What's the point in any type of art review, really? Movie reviews, TV reviews, visual art reviews, music reviews, video game reviews, they're all kind of doing the same thing, right? They're not really telling people if they'll like a piece or not. They're looking at the technical aspects of the piece, the meaning of the piece, the larger cultural context for the piece and how it fits into that context, the aesthetics and emotions of the piece, and overall, they try to help people understand how to engage with the piece. Regardless of the medium, it's not really about whether the reviewer personally enjoys the piece or thinks that other people will enjoy it. It's more about the external cultural value of the piece. That's how you can get 13 hours worth of cultural criticism about the Nickelodeon TV show "Victorious", a show that got generally mixed reviews for its entire run. To reviewers, it doesn't matter whether people liked it or not. What matters is the show's cultural legacy and what we can learn about our culture through the lens of this piece.

Taking movies as an example, "The Godfather" is widely recognized as one of the best movies of all time. Personally, I don't care for it as a movie. But I can still accept that it's culturally valuable- that it's "a good film". It transcended and reinvented the gangster movie genre, it was both commercial and artistic at the same time, it took a cynical look at the American Dream, it used innovative shots and filmmaking techniques, it managed to be captivating for the entirety of its 3 hour long run... I don't need to like it to see the appeal or to "get" why it's important.

Similarly, with music, you don't necessarily have to like a song, album, band, or musician to be able to appreciate its cultural value. For example, a lot of people don't like The Beatles. But I think it would be hard to argue that their music has no cultural value. They made a huge impact on music, both when they were making music and in their legacy. They have the most #1 hits of any band, which showed that they could be commercially successful, but also wrote very complex and artistic songs that are valuable from a composition and technical standpoint. They made huge innovations in artistic presentation, recording techniques, and production techniques. It's hard to overstate the impact they had on culture, not just in terms of music, but also in terms of 1960s counterculture and political activism. Generally, I think music reviewers exist to help us understand the cultural value that music has more than they exist to tell us whether or not we "should" like a piece.

On a kind of separate but more practical note, music reviewers are holdovers from a pre-internet world. Before you could easily listen to an album on Spotify or find a rip of it on YouTube, you had to decide whether or not to buy an album before ever hearing it. Up until 2000, when LimeWire and Napster started allowing people to illegally download music for free (or 2008, when Spotify launched and this practice became legal), there was real money on the line. Each album cost about $33 in today's money. Music reviewers helped people to guess whether they would like an album or not so that they could make better decisions about whether it was worth it to spend their money to be able to listen to the album.

These days, I think the practical value in music reviewing is helping people narrow down the content that's available to them. There are 70 million songs on Spotify. Assuming each song is 3 minutes long, it would take you 400 years to listen to them all if that's the only thing you ever did. And of course, the music on Spotify isn't even all the music that exists; Taylor Swift, The Beatles, Coldplay, Adele, and other big artists have pulled their music from Spotify. And there are millions of other indie artists out there whose music is only on TikTok or BandCamp.

Music critics can help us to decide which out of those 70 million songs are worth paying attention to, and which we might enjoy. Sure, that's not super helpful if you're trying to decide if you like Billie Eilish's latest album or whatever, you'll just listen to it and decide. But it's really helpful if you're trying to find new artists to listen to since otherwise you would never be exposed to the musicians they're talking about. For example, right now I'm looking at NME's list of 100 Essential Emerging Artists for 2022. I never would have heard of any of these artists otherwise, but now I know that I might be interested in Anz, whose music is "kaleidoscopic dance music from a club culture polymath", and that a good song to start with is "You Could Be" (update: this song is actually a bop. Glad I looked it up). Or I might be interested in Eades, because NME suggests them for fans of the Talking Heads and they describe themselves as “David Byrne and Lou Reed’s dyslexic child playing out of a Motorola Pebl”, which sounds like a vibe I would like (update: it is).

Of course, you don't have to like music criticism or care about it. If you prefer to discover music organically and make your own assessments about whether it's good or not, that's totally fine. But I do think it has a point, both in terms of the larger culture and just practically speaking.

I find it intriguing that in the AD/Kylo fandom with so many people on social media becoming published authors, it’s hurting readers when the fanfics are purged. We experienced that in droves when TRoS was released where people who were known for being top tier suddenly became anti Kylo because Disney told them to and all their fics were purged from Ao3 and everywhere else without a trace. Instead of anyone else acknowledging that they ceased to exist, when asked around, no one could say who the writers were to begin with, like a glitch in the Matrix. It’s a shame because a lot of the stories were very entertaining and you could tell they were written with love. Now it’s considered that you are not “quality” or valid to even try to get to know unless you have a publishing contract which also means deleting all traces of the original fan fics that people loved without warning. Regardless of the actual quality of the fics, which is in the eye of the beholder, it would be like the fandom a person grew to enjoy the talent and camaraderie of coming to a screeching halt because SafariGirlSP decided she wanted to attempt making a living from fanfic, which includes deleting all fics ever written and any contact with said readers. Why should that be what we (collectively) as Kylo fans strive for, when that only hurts the fandom in the end? It sends the message that (general) you don’t matter to anyone as someone worth taking the time to read and enjoy your creativity unless you are getting it monetized full stop.

I have absolutely no experience with the Kylo fic phenomenon, and I wasn't really active on here until covid, but I'll take your word for it. So, I don't know what other fans or writers strive for, or really even what they get out of writing. I can only tell you what it means for me personally, and I am happy to do so.

My personal goals with writing fics here have always been utilitarian and twofold. Firstly, I work in a writing intensive area and when covid hit, my workload slowed and then has since converted to different mediums, which has been wonderful! But my initial reason for taking prompts and writing fics was solely to keep myself in shape for writing 5k words a day on a topic that was dropped on me last minute. So, it was fun to be sure and topics I enjoyed, but the point for me was to keep those writing muscles in shape for work. Then, I decided that I wanted to try to pursue writing professionally, and since then, my stories here have been simple practice and skill-honing. The best way to get good at something is practice, and that's how I view this. In the last year or so with this in mind, I've been taking my writing and stories more seriously in terms of trying to create something that I feel is of quality. That has been exponentially more productive and rewarding for me than anything in the past.

I do love my ridiculous stories, of course. But frankly, it's all the same to me if these stories just live in my head and play out over and over in my mental reels, because they certainly do. I don't need to write them down for my personal enjoyment or fulfillment, and I really don't care about faceless notes and interactions.

The actual mechanical writing is work, plain and simple, and for me, there needs to be a tangible reason to put in work that will, ideally, yield dividends. Writing requires an investment of time, and I put a lot of time and thought into my writing. I work full time, have relationships, pets, and a fairly full life, and this is how I choose to spend most of my free time instead of watching TV or goofing off online or even just vegging out lol. I don't spend my time writing just to say that I've written some stupid story, I do it because I hope it will benefit me in the future in tangible ways. I'm inherently very lazy lol, so if I'm putting in effort, I want to get something out of it other than a warm and fuzzy feeling. I can go to the gym for that and be better off lol. Like most people, I hate my job, even though I have a fairly good one, and I would love to make money writing instead! Two of my great friends here have similar goals - to write professionally - so, this seems like a very normal goal to me. The idea of all of us becoming published authors one day is very exciting and motivating!

I have always read a lot of novels, my favorite genres are action, adventure, and horror. After writing here for a while, I realized that I can write just as well if not better than most of my favorite authors whom I have loved and idealized for years. None of these are new authors I would expect many here to know, and most are frankly old men who have been dead for years lol. But with the practice I've gotten through writing fics here, I feel that I can now go toe to toe with most of my favorites, which has been the most gratifying feeling I've ever gotten from writing.

The idea of thinking myself capable of writing novels and choosing not to pursue it does not resonate with me. If there are people that upsets, that is unfortunate, but it will hardly change my personal goals. Conversely, the idea that anyone would not want to encourage someone to fulfill their best potential seems odd and contrary to me. I also think it's unrealistic for me to bank on 'making it' in any sort of entertainment venue that relies on other people wanting what I'm selling, but it's still worth a shot.

Most of my stories here are not things that I consider worthy of trying to turn into a novel, so if that's a concern, it's misplaced. I only have two or three stories that I've posted here that I think are both original enough and of substantial enough quality to consider novelizing. So far, the novel projects I'm working on are original ideas that use the skills I've developed here and of course, the characters I love for templates.

Some of my stories are still purely for fun here too. Like my Mills fic, Maneater. It's a total fan fic hack job of Jurassic Park that could never be published, although maybe I could scavenge some isolated scenes here and there. I still want to structure it well and write it well with what I consider Grade A work from me because it still serves as practice, but that's an example of something I just wanted to write to scratch an itch and post for fun. I'm revamping a pirate fic now that's similar because it's too close to POTC, and man am I kicking myself for not making it more original initially lol. I think it's turning into one of the better things I've written.

Lastly, I mean this as no offence to anyone in particular and certainly not to you and your kind message, but I really don't understand the concept of the fandom to which you're referring. I personally don't feel like I'm a part of any fandom at all, aside from having similar taste in men to other people whom I don't know at all. I have a few friends that I've made here for whom I am very grateful. But I only know about twenty-five or so people who have ever even talked to me off of anon. So when people talk about fandom, that's really my exposure to what feels like a fandom to me - about twenty-five people here who I know and deeply appreciate, and about three-thousand more people who follow me but whom I don't know and who have never said a word to me or left a comment about one of my fics. I don't even know if I have 3k humans or bots following me lol! So, if you're asking if I feel loyalty to hordes of people who read my stories but never send me so much as a comment or an ask about them, the answer has to be No lol. I might feel differently if there was more genuine interaction here, but it seems to be trending in the opposite direction for all of us.

I've thought very seriously about taking all my stories down across all platforms regardless of whether or not I ever get published because I really don't like the idea of people just reading my content and not even feeling inspired enough to send a comment. This might sound strange, but it feels a little bit like stripping and parading around nude in front of an open window, knowing that there are a lot of people who are going to see something that is of value to me and personal to me, but also knowing they don't care enough to say a word about it to me.

I've also thought about creating a private blog and only sharing my content with the people who have interacted with me currently and in the past, and someday I may do just that. Honestly, the only thing that stops me is sheer laziness.

The taste of modern fashion and music seemed outrageous to you. They were way too flashy and you never really understood the purpose of creating additional noise and disturbance. It was why you chose to pursue the field of classical music. It gave you the peace and quiet that you so desperately need, especially after that one particular encounter.

Many others have criticized you for studying something that is not highly recognized by the public.

“Classical music is so dead these days. No one ever listens to them anymore.”

“Right? Like they’re so boring. I doubt you can even make that much as a career.”

“That’s why ‘starving artists’ exists. Y/N, you have so much potential. You could have totally done something else.”

You ignored all their comments. Deep down, you knew that there is nothing else other than music that makes you feel alive and worthy. It is your best subject and the very medium that can express your true self. No one can take that away from you. Not even Hwang Hyunjin.

“Alright class, for your next assignment, I would like you all to analyze a piece of music that you enjoy. Because we are still in the history of music, it would be best to limit your options to classical music only. That is all for today.”

Packing up your belongings and exiting your lecture hall, you went straight towards the music library. The unfortunate aspect of your current lecture room was that it was a bit far from the music library. You picked up your pace and sped walk towards the building, hoping that the manuscript to the very piece of music you were looking for was still there.

“Hm… Doesn’t seem like it’s in our system.” The librarian looked up from behind her glasses. “Sorry about that.”

Of course it was not in the system. Could the day get any better?

With the assignment due in a few days, there was no time to wait for the manuscript to be returned to the library. You decided to consult the local bookstore, situated a few blocks away from campus.

It was an older bookstore that sold mostly second handed books, with a specific section in the basement dedicated to manuscripts. You always found it to be a nice and calming place, especially on days when the weather is slightly chilly and the leaves of deciduous trees have changed their colours. The emerald green paint of the storefront gave it an overall vintage look.

There was a familiar sound from the windchimes as you opened the door to the bookstore. A brown-haired boy wearing a blue sweater looked up from behind the counter. Kim Seungmin, a tenor from the vocal department, also your biggest crush, greeted you as you entered. You had to thank Changbin for introducing you to Seungmin. In the hours after class, you often visited the bookstore, hoping that you would see him. His father owned the store and Seungmin would be there to help. But there were days where Seungmin was away.

“Hey, Y/N. Long time no see.”

His presence caught you off guard. You did not expect to see him that day and felt extremely self conscious to face him in a disheveled state. It was all Hwang Hyunjin’s fault.

Fearing that the silence might have been a bit too long, you blurted out a quick yes before scuttering away towards the basement to look for your manuscript.

You took the stairs carefully, as the ceilings were a little too low for your liking. Even though you were not a particularly tall person, you have accidentally hit your head in similar environments.

Voices emerged from between the shelves as you walked towards the manuscript section. The mention of your name had your ears perking up.

“Did you hear? Y/N actually lost her first Piano Battle today!”

“It’s about time that she loses a round. Who does she think she is? Thinking that she’s better than everyone.”

You hid behind one of the closest shelves away from where they could see you, but close enough that you can still hear them.

“Agreed. And she lost to THE Hwang Hyunjin. This proves the fact that she’s not the best and that Hyunjin is truly a God sent gift. Not only does he have the looks, but he also has the talent! What a prince.”

“Oh my gosh, totally! He’s so boyfriend material. I’m planning to ask him out sometime.”

“Yes, you totally should! There’s no way he’ll reject you.”

Their footsteps drew further away from where you were standing, eventually disappearing from the basement. It seemed like the two had left the bookstore.

You took a moment to recall what you have heard.

“Who does she think she is? Thinking that she’s better than everyone.”

Was that how others saw you from their perspectives? Arrogant? Well, you never did smile much without purpose and that you were always so immersed in your studies. But you were never rude to others. Maybe they were just jealous. Over what? The fact that you competed against that prick? Gross. They can have him. It was none of your business whatsoever.

You tried to push the negative thoughts out of your mind. There was no time to dwell with gossip, even if they were about you. Finding the manuscript for your assignment was the main task and also the entire reason you were there in that basement.

The manuscripts were ordered alphabetically by the composer’s last name. Finding the first letter brought you a step closer to the composer and the very manuscript that you were looking for.

The composition you chose that day strongly reflected your mood. There was no better way to portray emotions than to analyze the piece and eventually, perform it for your monthly evaluation. It was a perfect opportunity to regain your points on the scale. You will beat that Hwang Hyunjin.

“Here we are. Beethoven sonatas.” You found your section and continued to browse for your copy.

Manuscript after manuscript you looked and at last, tucked in the very corner of that shelf was Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 23, Appassionata.

Just as you were about to retrieve the music, a long arm swooped down and snatched it right before you had the chance to reach it.

“Hey, I was looking at that!” You exclaimed.

“Tsk. Y/N, you gotta be faster next time. You know, we do live in a first come first serve society.”

The voice alone sent you into fury. Turning around was not necessary for you to know who the voice belonged to. You heard it more than enough on the same day.

“Give it back.” Your teeth were clenched tightly as you enunciated each syllable with precision.

“It’s mine now.”

“No it isn’t.” You tried reaching for the manuscript in his hand but of course, he was too tall.

The quarreling must have caused quite a disturbance because Seungmin came down to the basement to see what was happening. He just had to catch you while you were in a rather embarrassing situation. You were too short to reach for the manuscript in Hwang Hyunjin’s hand as he held it above his head.

“Is everything alright? Y/N?”

You returned to your composure as quickly as possible, smoothing down the wrinkles of your coat. You gave Seungmin a smile.

“Just looking for a copy of Beethoven’s Appassionata. Other than that, everything’s swell. No need to worry.

Seungmin gave you a look of concern before retreating to this place behind the counter.

“Okay. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to ask for help.”

You stood there, frozen in your spot. You could not believe that you embarrassed yourself in front of your crush of three, no, nearly four years. Not once did you ever behave immaturely in front of Seungmin. You always made sure that he saw you as the best pianist in the faculty, a guaranteed first place for the graduating piano competition. But thanks to Hwang Hyunjin, the flawless reputation of yours was shattered. Seungmin would never see you the same way again. He might even end up with those girls who were gossiping about you earlier. The very thought scared you so much that you ran away from the shelves, up the stairs of the basement, and right out the front door. The sound of the windchimes signalled your exit.

Of course, it just had to rain the moment you were outside. You did not bring an umbrella and the size of the droplets were not doing you a favor. Great. Just great.

You were thoroughly soaked when you returned to your residence. You might as well take a shower to wash away the dirt that had built up throughout the day. Closing the door to your dorm, you realized that you had completely forgotten about the manuscript. It meant that you had to go back to the store and risk the chance of running into the jerk and embarrassing yourself in front of Seungmin all over again. Or, you could just download a copy from the web and print it out from the library. Either way, you had to head out again. Oh well, you will go after your shower.

You took some time in the shower, letting the hot water soak away your fatigue and annoyance. It was also to give some extra time to wait for the rain to clear up. You washed and dried your hair, hoping that you have gotten rid of the grime from earlier in the day.

Finishing up, you got dressed and prepared for your trip to the library. The rain has not quite stopped from earlier and this time, you made sure that you had an umbrella in hand.

Before you could step foot into the hall, something greeted you from the ground at the doorway of your dorm. It was a package, wrapped in kraft paper with the words “To: Y/N”.

You tore away the wrapping paper curious to see what was in it. Sure enough, a familiar cover emerged with bold letters that read:

Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 23, Appassionata.

DETROIT: BECOME BETTER

(Part 2: Markus)

Hello! This is my 2nd DBH plot critique: markus!! A few days ago, I did a complete reimagining of kara's character, so if you want to see that, it's a few posts down from this.

I'll be doing the same thing today, and I think it will be half plot-critique and half complete-reimagining since that was what the other post was. I'll format it the exact same as the other one, with general notes first, then the overall story afterwards.

As always, I have to put a disclaimer: this post is just what *I* would like to see from the characters in Detroit: Become Human. If you have a different opinion, that's fine!! Feel free to share it with me or others.

I also want to apologize, like last time, for the long post. I don't have the option to do a "read more" button, so you'll have to scroll if you don't want to see it.

Anyway, let's get into it!

So as you saw in my last post with kara, Markus is connected with her in terms of Jericho and RA9. Overall, his story isn't as different from the original, (since I feel like his story in general was okay) but there are certain things that I can add or take away that could make it even better.

First, I want more lore with Markus and Carl. In one ending for the confrontation with Leo, Carl dies. Markus runs over to him, throws himself onto his dying owner, and calls him dad. I can tell you right now that that line was very jarring for me, and probably others. It felt out of place, like we needed to expand on their relationship before he could see him as a father so early in the story. So, I would probably show them having a closer bond than what we saw in the game. Maybe have them banter, or have them discuss Carl's life when he was young. Just show a bond with them in general that's more than caretaker and owner.

Secondly, since this new version of Markus is NOT RA9, I would expand on that. In the game, the characters usually are consistent with their decisions and how they play out in the grand scheme of things. Kara, for example, has always wanted to help other androids - She helps alice, ralph, and luther with no hesitation. Her being RA9 would make sense in the context of her caretaker personality and her natural drive to help others in need. Connor, as another example, has always taken a backseat stance on things. He is not a natural leader, and that is reflected in the amount of time it takes for him to deviate. He, of course, wants Android freedom, but wouldn't become RA9. I feel that this is the same for Markus. In-game, his storyline doesn't match up with his character.

What DRIVES him? WHY does he want to free androids? What make a him DIFFERENT from any other deviant android, who obviously wants their people to be free? We don't see any events in-game that influence his decision to become the leader of Jericho, and I feel like this is a mistake. Therefore, I don't WANT him to become the leader of jericho, or RA9. He would definitely have enough ambition to be second-in-command, though.

I also hate the romance with North, as I assume everyone else does. Markus has no reason to be with someone like her, because they always disagree with eachother. I genuinely feel like he would be better with simon, if the player chooses to have him in a relationship at all. Simon is the only other member of jericrew who is actual friends with Markus, and they always agree. Since, in my version of DBH, Simon doesn't die, he and Markus could have an opportunity to be together.

Alright, I think we've covered mostly everything. So, what would a new and improved Markus look like in DBH?

First, I want to see the altercation that he had with the protesters in "shades of color" to affect him more than it did. And yes, I know he didn't mind it because he wasn't deviant yet, but we never see it as something that drives him when he is RA9 in-game. Casual racism against androids would definitely be something that RA9 Markus would want to fix, and that doesn't happen.

I also want Carl to put more of an emphasis on the arts with Markus; Things like music, painting, cooking, and philosophy would be fitting. I personally feel like Markus would make an amazing philosopher, and he would talk about it for hours. Markus seems very, very intelligent, and he would enjoy things that have culture. Carl would enjoy talking about the arts with him, because he only hates the people who are only interested in them for money. Markus has no bad intentions, and as an artist, Carl would be eager to share his gift.

Markus being interested in human means of pleasure would serve him well in Jericho, and having someone in tune with humanity could aid androids in getting sympathy in the revolution.

Alright! I think i covered everything i want to change or critique, so onto the story as a whole!

First, I want to start the new story from when he returns home to wake Carl. When Carl asks Markus what happened to his clothes, he doesn't respond. Maybe he avoids the question by asking what he wants for breakfast. Carl would catch this, since Markus already has breakfast prepared for him. This would also solidify their bond to the player, because Carl knows Markus too well to be persuaded by something like that. He doesn't press the subject though, because Carl is polite. Remember, Markus probably wouldn't be comfortable with casual racism. This would influence him to go to Jericho, even if he didn't know it yet.

Practically everything in his story goes to plan in-game until he meets Kara, but with subtle differences. I maybe want carl and markus to have a few lines of banter or half-hearted argument about something trivial, like what the best medium of art is, or who the best author is. Maybe they could have this conversation after Markus serves Carl breakfast and is meant to find something to do. This would show the player just how familial their bond is, if they can just argue about something as simple as that. The scene where Markus gets shot by the cops, therefore, would have a greater impact on players.

So Markus gets to the junkyard. Everything remains the same, except that he doesn't find the "kara" tech demo model singing her Japanese song, since that Kara is the Kara in this story. (For clarification, this was an Easter egg the player could find, where the Kara from the tech demo was laying abandoned in the junkyard, singing the Japanese song.)

Markus gets the transmission from the dying android about jericho, and after replacing all his parts, escapes in the same way is it was in-game. I want him to lay low for a few days before following the trail to Jericho, to make sure his new parts are working well. This is where he meets Kara, who is on the run from Connor and Hank. She quickly explains her situation, and he decides that they need to flee to Jericho immediately.

On the way, (normally on the mission where the player has to follow the graffiti to find the abandoned freighter with markus) he explains his situation, and how he deviated. Kara tells him that she has always been deviant, and he is fascinated. I feel like, since Carl taught him to be very artistic and philosophical, he would have many questions about how this affects the nature of humanity and how androids and humans aren't so different. Kara agrees with this, and says something along the lines of "I'll have to use that sometime."

When they get to Jericho, look around, and do a brief introduction, I feel like both Kara and Markus would be asked to visit Lucy separately. Markus goes first, and it goes how it does in the game. When Kara goes in, he sees Simon waiting for him just outside the door.

I want Simon to take an interest in both of them, and try to become friends. Maybe he's lonely. The only people he really had to talk to were josh and North, so he's probably excited to see new people.

He asks Markus to sit down, and he wants to do a more in-depth introduction. He's optimistic that the newcomers are friendly, and wishes to make a good impression. He's also very curious about Kara, but doesn't want to bother her with questions.

I don't know exactly what their conversation is about in detail, but I want them to be more in-depth about their origins and how they deviated. I want them to become friends. (I also really like the idea of Kara and Simon being best friends too, because I like their dynamic lol)

Over the next couple of chapters in the game, Kara and Markus work hand in hand to free androids. They stage protests, marches, and Kara accompanies them on their mission to steal supplies for the dying androids in Jericho.

When the time comes for Kara to visit kamski, Markus wants to go with her. I feel like he's taken a liking to her since they met; since they both met eachother when they were alone and scared. They were eachothers first real allies, and they want to protect eachother. Markus had heard of kamski from Carl, and from what he knew, kamski might not be able to be trusted. Kara said she wanted to go alone, and Markus warned her of this.

While she's gone, I wanted Markus to hatch a plan to stage a protest and march bigger than what they've done before. He tells the rest of jericrew his rough plans, and north is all for it. She's been wanting to take charge for a long time, but Markus doesn't like her methods. He tells her flat out that there will be no killing or hurting, even if the humans get violent. North is angry at this, but Simon is glad. Being the optimist, he wants everyone to be happy, and he conveys his gratitude to markus. Josh also tells him that he's willing to participate, and says that north will too even if she's angry about it. They both leave, and Simon stays with Markus to talk.

Again, I don't know yet what they would talk about, but I want it to increase their relationship. They definitely aren't ready to reveal their affection, or even acknowledge their attraction, but they are still friends. I do know, however, what Markus will gain from their discussion. Being the caring figure that he is, he's moved by Simon's sad story about how he deviated, and it makes him angry. Before this, he hasn't had many personal run-ins with unsavory humans, but hearing how they've treated the people he cares about makes him want to do something. After their talk, he starts planning the android march. (And, he doesn't know it yet, but he starts subconsciously planning the whole android revolution.)

Kara returns, and Markus is curious about her visit. When she brushes it off and says that she didn't really learn anything, Markus is unsure if shes telling the truth. North arrives behind him and tells him to tell Kara about their plan. He does, and she's all for it.

Later, though, a few days after maybe, Kara asks him to sit down with her and talk. She tells him that he should be the one to free the androids in the march alone. He's utterly confused; why, as leader of Jericho and RA9, would Kara want to sit this one out?

She answers his questions by saying that she has a plan to hyjack the television feed at Stratford Tower. Since its extremely tedious, she asks if she can take the rest of jericrew with her to assist. He's confused once more, and asks if she's sure. What if he needs help with the protest? What if he gets into trouble?

She reassures him. She says that she believes in him wholeheartedly, and that she knows he will be safe. I also feel like it would be comforting to markus to mention Carl in some way. Maybe it would be nice for him to see Markus, standing alone in front of and humanity and not backing down. It would be nice to see his son doing something like that.

This, I feel, is what would make Markus say yes. He misses Carl, and likes that he could instill some hope in him.

I don't quite know how the protest would go. Obviously it would go well, but I want there to be stakes. Markus has multiple opportunities to die depending on the player's ability to do the QTE's, as does every other android participating in the march.

In some way, I also want Connor in this scene. He isn't directly against the protest, but he and hank had gotten word of it and decided to attend undercover, and would hide in the crowd. Kara had previously told the jericrew what Connor and hank looked like, so markus recognized them immediately. He ends the protest shortly after seeing them, but luckily he still achieved his intended effect. He made a small speech, and increased public opinion. As he is retreating back to Jericho with several other newly recruited androids, he sees Kara's robotic face on a tv window display, live broadcasting her speech. He smiles to himself. He doesn't even have to listen to what she's saying because he knows it would have achieved it's intended effect, he just hopes that the media wouldn't take her words as a threat.

They all return to jericho to regroup. I have absolutely no idea how this would be written, but I want this to be the moment that Simon and Markus acknowledge their feelings. They both just had events that ended better than they thought, so they're feeling excited. Under any other circumstance, they wouldn't have gotten together do quickly. Maybe they interface to show eachother their feelings, or maybe they just embrace, like humans. I don't know. All I know is that they are a team; Simon is an important asset to markus when making plans, and their relationship will just make that easier.

After this is the fall of jericho. Markus and Kara are talking about plans when Connor arrives, threatening them with a gun. Both Kara and Markus try to convince Connor to deviate, but the noise of a helicopter overhead interrupts them. Connor gets away, and Markus escapes with kara. This whole scene goes as it does in the game; every character has the possibility to die.

When they recuperate afterwards, (the scene where Markus talks to connor and makes a speech) Kara is the one to talk to connor while Markus goes to talk to his people. (He says exactly what the player chooses to do in-game.) I wanted Kara to talk to (now deviant) connor because she was the one to see him on the highway. She needed closure, and Markus was happy to let her have it while he brings comfort to the other androids.

I believe after this, the next time we see Markus and jericrew in DBH is during the altercation with the police and the dirty bomb; but I want Markus to have his closure with Carl.

So he visits Carl alone, because nobody else knew him as well as he did. This probably will go as it's done in the game, but I want it to be more affectionate. In the game, the only thing that Markus visits Carl for is to seek advice, but that isn't enough for me. Maybe they would hug, or say "I love you" to eachother. It wouldn't be TOO affectionate, because neither of them are very cuddly or touchy, but it would get the point across. Carl would still give him the advice he needs, and Markus decides not to use the dirty bomb.

When it comes time to confront the police, (the scene where the player could choose to either kiss north or sing) he kisses Simon, confronts the police and refuses to back down. Kara makes a speech to the humans in a last ditch effort to gain their sympathy, and it works. The game ends with jericrew, kara, connor, and hank all on the same side, happy and content with their efforts.

As for a post-credit scene, I still have no idea what that would be. Maybe it's Markus and Simon, sitting peacefully together and in love. Maybe it's Markus and Carl watching tv. I don't know, but it should be something happy.

That's my second DBH plot critique!! I haven't read this over before posting, so the writing may be choppy or there may be typos. But anyway, I hope you enjoyed!! Next up is Connor, and that will be posted shortly. Thank you :)

I’ll gladly give some advice. (This all has to do with my personal experience but everyone is different!)

I’ve been drawing for my entire life, and only recently have I begun to really be happy with some of my art. Some people only need a few years to get really good and be proud of their work, whereas others, like me, take much longer.

So my first piece of advice: Don’t beat yourself up!!

Your art journey is particular to you and each stroke of a paint brush or a pencil is a step closer to where you want to be.

Secondly: observe and “steal” techniques!!

To clarify, definitely don’t plagiarize lol. When I say steal, I mean to observe what you like about other artists’ pieces and the real world and practice doing that.

There’s a book called Steal Like an Artist. I haven’t read it, but from what I can tell, it asserts that “stealing” other people’s’ techniques will help you get to where you want to be. It’s truly some of the best advice I’ve ever followed.

When I was younger, I couldn’t draw feet for the life of me. But my best friend, also an artist, could. So what did I do? I looked at how she did it and practiced mimicking that, and also asked her how she did it and if I could try copying her other techniques for practice. I also looked up photos of foot structure online and tried to copy that.

What ends up happening as you do stuff like this is that you eventually develop your own way to draw/paint things. All the different aspects from all the different styles you study eventually mesh (after lots of practice) and you begin to add your own details without even thinking about it. The way you draw/paint noses becomes a practiced habit. The figure of a chair is on your page with a few strokes of your wrist. “Stealing like an artist” is taking inspiration from around you and using it to create your own style.

(Again, to anyone reading, you should NOT copy a piece of art and post/share it, especially without credit, and ESPECIALLY without permission. Ideas and inspiration can’t be copyrighted, but the actual art itself can.)

P.S. taking inspiration from old works like renaissance and period paintings is a great way to get a grasp on anatomy!

Now. This next one is very important.

Not every art session has to result in a masterpiece, or even a finished piece.

This is one that I struggled with a LOT and still struggle with to this day!! When you sit down to paint/draw/create art, sometimes you may feel a pressure to create exactly what you envisioned or at least come out with a beautiful, finished work.

But realistically, most the time that doesn’t happen.

Most of my best pieces come when I least expect them. Other people can sit down with a vision in their head and execute it perfectly. That’s not me. Whichever you are, you are doing amazing just by creating art.

If you grow frustrated and want to stop, then don’t force yourself to continue! Art, though it can be hard and frustrating at times, should overall be something you enjoy! I don’t draw because I feel an obligation to draw. I draw because drawing makes me happy. Whatever medium you may use, you should enjoy creating as a whole! Humans are dumb and sometimes make themselves suffer even when there’s no good reason for it. So don’t force yourself to do a hobby you hate, because then it is no longer a hobby.

Lastly, be patient.

This is one that frustrates just about every aspiring/learning artist. Myself included—I’m still learning and improving every day.

It took me two years just to learn how to draw a human figure right. It took me longer than that to learn to draw facial expressions or clothes wrinkles.

These things take time. The trick is this: rather than frustrate yourself thinking about all the work it takes to get where you want to be, just... create. And enjoy it. Enjoy the work. Again, the work is the fun part! And when you do something great, be proud of yourself!! Applaud yourself!!

Like I said, everyone is different, but I sincerely hope this advice was general enough that you, Anon, and anyone else reading this can take something away from it.
