Drew this a while ago but just now getting to post it!! Here's a sketch of Silvia's Parabola reflection. I'm calling her "the Daffodil Maiden." For an overexplanation of the Yucatec Maya, Welsh, Spanish, English, and Catholic visual references-- look below the cut :)

Also I *am* working on the OC gouache portraits (got one done and two sketched out) but my hip is injured or something?? making sitting down painful so I can't paint :/ As soon as I can, I will get to work on those again!

The majority of the reflection's garment is based on the huipil of the Yucatec Maya, specifically the versions worn in the jarada, the national folk dance of Belize. Silvia's is embroidered with daffodils, the national flower of Wales. The flared hem is ruffled and gathered, trimmed with ribbon, a nod to European textiles/sewing techniques and Spanish folk-dance costumes. The ribbon sash thing is also part of the jarada costume--here I want it to constrict Silvia a bit.

The long unstyled hair is taken from the pre-Raphaelite painters, who depicted idealized versions of Victorian youthful femininity. Specifically I'm thinking of Waterhouse's 'Lady of Shalott,' because that poem is about a mirror and a forbidden glimpse of a desired reality. It's too perfect for Parabola! The halo, though, moves us into the more austere Catholic ideal of the virgin saint, most notably Mary the mother of Jesus.

I specifically took inspiration from the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico and the Americas, who legend states appeared to an Indigenous peasant, St. Juan Pablo. There is a lot of debate among Latin Americans about how the story of the Virgin of Guadalupe should be interpreted. Is her apparition the Church's attempt to redirect and control Indigenous goddess-worship? Or does it represent an important step toward inclusion in Christianity for Mary to appear to an oppressed non-white person? Does she represent colonial control, or the resistance to it? Although Silvia was never Catholic, Catholicism is one of the most recognizable impacts of Spain's colonialism in the Americas, so I wanted to visually depict that tension in this design.

The daffodil rod references iconography of St. Joseph, Mary's husband. Legend states that his walking-stick flowered with lilies to show everyone that he would be Mary's husband and Jesus's legal father. Joseph is the patron saint of fathers, immigrants, exiles, and workers, so that's also relevant to Silvia's backstory.

With this design, I'm trying to convey Silvia's complicated relationship to her cultural identities, as well as her deep desire to be seen as morally pure and good. I think she would be uncomfortable with how European and maidenly her reflection is--because it would force her to confront the fact that her moral code, no matter how radical, still smacks of European philosophy and Catholic ideals of "purity."

Hmm I really had to think about this, and go looking through some of my fics. There are a lot of lines I really like from my fics, but do you think I can remember them all???? Here's a few I could find/remember...

+ It felt so unbelievably good that it brought tears to his eyes, “Uhn, fuck,” he choked out, hiding his face in Aziraphale’s shoulder, feeling too exposed, too vulnerable, like he’d cracked open his ribcage and displayed his heart to his angel.

+ The way Aziraphale caressed his body made Crowley feel delicate, like he was something worth keeping, worth looking after, as if he were a favourite trinket, handled with utmost care, cherished since the beginning.

A Happy Accident (OMFD) -

Voices drifted on the slight breeze, and Ed pussy footed his way over a few rocks, intending to just sneak on by, and continue to his destination, and Stede. Something about the voice caught his attention though, and he carefully trod closer, staying hidden behind shields of green, but managing to peak through between a gap in the leaves.

He spotted two men in the moonlight, walking rather uncertainly down a path. A glint of metal, and Ed knew a pistol when he saw one, it was pointed at the man in front, who seemed to be whimpering quietly. Blonde hair looking almost white in the moon’s rays, the white shirt on his back almost glowing, vibrating as he trembled, the posture and gait of the man was familiar also.

Nepeta is obsessed with mcyt but she's mostly normal about it, especially in comparison to some of the other beta trolls. She isn't on Twitter, and she doesn't get involved in discourse very much.

She's one of those people who's somehow following half a dozen smps simultaneously, and writing fanfic for all of them. A lot of people vaguely know of Nepeta, even though she isn't more than moderately popular, just because she's seemingly everywhere. Her username is in your favorite streamers chat. Your mutual has reblogged a few of her Tumblr posts. You search a rarepair on Ao3 and she's written three of the four fics about it. Etc etc.

Nepeta ships everything from the really popular pairings to the rarest of rarepairs. A decent amount of her followers are there because she's one of the only ones making content for a certain pairing.

She gets very invested in lore, and can be pretty intense about MCC. She enjoys competition and murder murder stab. Nepeta doesn't get to the point of arguing though, she's just gleeful about violence.

Equius dislikes mcyt but Nepeta is always able to make him watch MCC with her. She infodumps about lore to him a lot.

One day he accidentally clicks on a link she sent him. It was for a Joel Smallishbeans video. After that, Joel videos start popping up in his recommendations. He's only vaguely annoyed, until he finds out about Joel hating and killing horses. He is outraged.

He hatewatches all of Joel's videos and leaves a bunch of weird angry comments on all of them. Many keyboards are broken in the process. Equius soon becomes somewhat infamous in parts of the MCYT community as "that one weird Joel hater".

Equius is entirely unaware of this because the only websites he's on are Trollian, Troll YouTube, and a half dozen or so extremely obscure and specific specialized slam poetry websites.

Happily, Nepeta also remains unaware of the unintentional consequences of her actions.
