What’s special about guardians of the galaxy as well is I think it manages to walk the fine line of having death be present and something that could very much happen to our main characters but also choosing to keep them all alive at the end of the trilogy. Not only is it nice to see finished arcs but I’ve never once felt as if the stakes were not high in these films and could not result in a main character death. James Gunn does a good job at showing he isn’t afraid to go there with what happened with Yondu at the end of gotg 2 (and providing a very meaningful death to him beneficial to his arc) and to an extension even shows this with rockets friends (lyla teeths floor) in the third film. I 100% felt as if multiple guardians would die I’m this film and whilst it did come close everyone made it out okay! This is a change from what we see in previous media where the line has pushed to one side too much where it can get annoyingly repetitive and boring because there is no tension or, death can happen too frequently that it’s a joke.

not to talk about Star Wars on main and I'd fight Dave Filoni in a Waffle House parking lot as much as the next burned out former Star Wars fan, but also it is so funny to me when people blame Dave for stuff in TCW that comes directly from George Lucas. Ahsoka being Anakin's padawan was George Lucas's decision, not Dave Filoni's.

text: A teenage Togruta Padawan, Ahsoka Tano was a completely new character. "Ahsoka came out of an earlier idea for the series when I didn't think we were going to have Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi in it," says Filoni. "Henry [Gilroy] and I came up with a concept about two Jedi, a Master and a Padawan, assigned to the black market."

Though they jettisoned the concept once Lucas made it clear that the series would feature Skywalker and Kenobi, Gilroy and Filoni stuck with the idea of a girl Padawan. "Dave and I figured that Anakin was a Jedi Knight very early in the war, so we thought it would be interesting if we gave Obi-Wan a replacement Padawan," recalls Gilroy. "But George wanted her to be Anakin's Padawan."

"We added the idea of a Padawan so that we wouldn't be stuck in the same relationship dynamic between Anakin and Obi-Wan," says Lucas. "This is a way of explaining Anakin's rise to being a full-fledged Jedi, and at the same time the growing relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan as friends, as equals. In order to do that, we needed someone to take on the role of the younger person who is being taught in these stories."

"We were as surprised as anyone that Anakin had a Padawan," laughs Filoni, who got the task of figuring out how to work a major new character into the Star Wars saga. Filoni and Gilroy developed her character as a mix between Anakin's brashness and Obi-Wan's measured judgment, reflecting the shift between the Republic and the oncoming Empire.

"Anakin is in favor of a stricter type of government. Obi-Wan represents the Old Republic," explains Filoni. "Ahsoka's in between them, looking back at what was, looking forward to what might be."

Happy HFTH season 4 day! I'm so excited for the new episodes, and I want to celebrate by recommending some books I think some of the main characters would love.

Diggory Graves - Unwieldy Creatures

I have a feeling that Diggory might be interested in a nonbinary Frankenstein retelling...

Percy Reed - The Spirit Bares Its Teeth

A transmasc protagonist, ghosts, a t4t love story - Percy would relate to this book so much.

Nikignik - This Is How You Lose the Time War

Even aside from the whole Bigolas Dickolas thing, I think Nikignik would really love this book. It's an epic, complicated, super emotional love story, written in a way that almost feels like poetry - I have a feeling that Nikignik would like that.

Lady Ethel Mallory - Lady Susan

It's short, it's funny, it's a classic, it's from the perspective of the villain and said villain uses the title "lady"? Lady Ethel would love this book.

Riot Maidstone - Gideon the Ninth

It's about a butch lesbian with a sword. That alone would probably convince Riot to read it, but I think she would love the story, too.

Olivier Song - Infinity Alchemist

This book is about an alchemist who is rejected by the magic school he tried so hard to get into, and one of the love interests is genderfluid - Olivier might relate to it a little too much.

Clara Martin - The Grimoire of Grave Fates

It's a murder mystery set at a magic school that moves around the world, and it's told from 18 (!) different perspectives. I think Clara would love reading about all these different types of magic and trying to solve the mystery.

Polly - Good Omens

Polly reminds me so much of Crowley sometimes - to quote this post, they're both "demons sent on a celestial audit of earth and catching more feelings than they signed up for" - so Polly would probably either love or hate Good Omens, no in-between.

Yaretzi - The Salt Grows Heavy

I can't really explain why I think Yaretzi would like this book, but she would. Something about the main character being a murderous mermaid, probably.

Mort - All Systems Red

Mort would definitely want to be friends with Murderbot.

Hector Mendoza and Jonah Duckworth - Silver in the Wood

This is my go-to "Read this if you like Our Flag Means Death" book because the main characters remind me a lot of Stede and Ed, but the book also reminds me so much of Hector and Jonah, especially with the magical sentient forest setting.

Zelda Duckworth - The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher

This book is about a 83-year-old Chosen One who has to save the world armed with nothing but gumption and knitting needles - I think Zelda would enjoy that.

Mx. Morrell - What Moves the Dead

I think a fungal horror book with a nonbinary protagonist would be perfect for Mx. Morrell.

Danielle O'Hara - Pet

Pet is about a trans girl who has to reconsider everything she's been taught and save her friend with the help of a terrifying creature - everyone should read this book, but I think Danielle would especially like it.

Human deaths in movies affected every monster differently, in varying intensities.

Toriel and Asgore often reacted most viscerally, considering. Undyne might get hyped in the heat of the moment and then balk, backpedal. She didn’t really mean it but…old habits. Alphys was inevitably too attached to the doomed character(s) and got her heart broken. Papyrus tried to avert his gaze or chatter to distract himself. Sans’ poker face was nigh unbreakable.

But watching human heroes so powerful turn to dust like their own kind…Frisk sensed that their Marvel marathon would be put on hold for a while.

wait guys i just realized something

so yknow rocket’s line of “boo hoo, we’ve all got dead people. that’s no excuse to get everyone else dead along the way!” and how it connects to his backstory in gotg3. he said this in gotg1 when drax was determined for revenge and risking everyone else’s safety because of it

when *rocket* chose revenge in a critical moment, by attacking the High Evolutionary out of anger when Lyla was killed, he lost his chance to help Floor and Teefs to escape and they died too.

not only does this give so much more weight to the original quote, it ALSO makes what Peter did in Infinity War make so much more sense, narrative wise.

like ik we’re all (rightfully) angry at peter for punching thanos when they were *just* about to get the infinity gauntlet off him and *so close* to winning. and because of his actions in that moment everything went to shit.

but now im still mad at him but im less “why would this character do that” mad at him bc IT MAKES SENSE NOW. he chose revenge over losing someone he loved in the most critical moment instead of and he lost so much more because of it. The parallel between that and rocket!!! it gives this moment so much more and makes it feel more intentional and significant to the characters’ connected stories rather than just a throwaway to drive the plot to make thanos win.

December 1977. Given how much Marvel has since pushed Adam Warlock, Thanos, and the Infinity Gems, it's somewhat ironic that Jim Starlin's original Warlock series was rather ignominiously canceled before the story was complete, leaving the conclusion to play out in THE AVENGERS Annual #7 and MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE Annual #2 in the fall of 1977, both magnificently illustrated by Starlin and Joe Rubinstein. Continuing the story into the latter Annual required Starlin to frame his finale as, improbably, a Thing/Spider-Man team-up, but it's Mar-Vell (whose series Starlin had also written and drawn for a while) who delivers the full-page eulogy for Adam Warlock, a minor Kirby character whom Roy Thomas and Starlin had transformed into a tortured cosmic figure, driven by truly existential angst.

Given that Thanos' plot in this story had involved using the combined power of the six Infinity Gems (here still called "Soul Gems") to blow "every star out of the heavens," leaving Adam's vampiric Soul Gem just lying on his grave seems a trifle irresponsible, but at this juncture, Warlock is dead, Thanos has been reduced to a literal monument to his own folly, and none of the survivors understands the full power of the gems. Also, they don't know that the souls of Adam Warlock, Gamora, and Pip the Troll, taken by the Gem before their deaths, now reside in the idyllic landscape of Soul World.

Starlin would subsequently write the end of Mar-Vell in the memorable THE DEATH OF CAPTAIN MARVEL graphic novel in 1982, which returned Thanos as a kind of psychopomp. Alas, Thanos subsequently became too commercially important a villain (in the comics and later in the dreary live-action movies) to ever stay dead or truly learn from his mistakes.
