It feels like every day I read attempts to debunk the social model of disability that fundamentally misunderstand what the social model of disability is and who the people who developed that model were, including what the nature of their disabilities was, and I want to scream.

But I don't, because yelling at people on the internet is basically pointless. Instead I check to see that I'm not mutuals with whoever reblogged said misunderstanding and vague about it.

#'but [x impairment] would still exist and have [y implications] even if the world were completely accessible!' #okay well yeah but equating impairment and disability is explicitly the opposite of the social model of disability #the union of the *physically impaired* against segregation who developed this model #*were* by and large privileged in ways many other disabled people are not‚ yes #mike oliver who wrote the fucking book on the social model of disability #(social work with disabled people‚ published in 1983) #was a white man with a phd who pioneered an academic field‚ for one #and there *are* criticisms about the limitations to a purely social model of disability to be made #but like... our pal mike oliver was also a wheelchair user who broke his neck in a swimming accident as a teenager #which caused paralysis that affected his upper and lower body #not a clueless 'physically abled' autistic who didn't understand how physical limitations work #he lived the first 17 years of his life as a physically abled person #so I think he was aware of the difference between what his body could do before and after his accident #and like 'disability is socially constructed' #is not saying that differences between people and what they are able to do or do easily do not exist?? #my eyesight is so bad that if I could not access corrective lenses I would be functionally blind #and even with glasses my myopia and astigmatism cause a lot of tangible effects on my body #e.g. migraines‚ eyestrain‚ so many floaters that even looking through pristine glasses is like the lenses are scratched to hell #but my eyesight is not considered a disability #because the accommodations that enable me to participate in society fully in this area are so standard as to be invisible #can I magically see without corrective lenses? no #does wearing glasses not being considered a disability mean that I do not get migraines and eyestrain? no #so the arguments the thing I am vaguing are trying to debunk are not what is being argued! #well seems like I screamed about it after all #oh well

#thinking how you never get the time back... #im hyping up my mum to finish her novel (first draft of which was shortlisted for an unpublished manuscript award in a literary magazine) #and she used to write short stories and often have them published like when i was little #but its like . shes never going to get all that time back... #even though shes aware now and whatever she'll never get the time back she spent just endlessly cleaning up after children and a useless #husband and being an unpaid therapist and working and and #and its all just... transient work that leaves nothing behind #like housework is not a legacy. but its there invisibly in everyone elses achievements #that they got to do because of ur silent invisible constantly erased (in the literal sense bc clothes get dirty again and new meals need to #be made) work #which in an equal society where everyones doing some housework is sort of lovely #but when all these talented women are fading into nothing to make their sons and husbands into Great Men it just makes me want to throw up

From someone who's almost always writing and has done plenty of editing work on their own stuff and other people's stuff, I am here to tell you, fellow writers; You will never catch all your typos and grammar mistakes in your own writing.

2022 In Review

2022 was not a particularly fruitful year for my fictive life, somewhat intentionally; I had meant from the get-go to take some time away from the round of writing/revising/submitting short work that is endless once you've started it. I'd hoped that not sending things places would provide space for new things to percolate and bubble up, but that wasn't really the case (I suspect it wasn't for many of us). 2022 was difficult in a lot of societal and personal ways. The short fiction I had published this year were pieces sold in the previous year. A piece of 2021 work, "This Deviant Flesh," was part of a Shirley Jackson Award win for Unfettered Hexes.

I did feel freer to pitch nonfiction pieces, most of which were just predicated on a simple concept: I think this thing is cool, would you let me talk about it? I recommend it. There are a lot of well-edited websites and journals for independent entertainment critique out there. There are also a lot of cool indie presses and labels who will send you review copies for free!

I also felt freer to DIY whatever I felt like myself--this resulted in some of my longest-term and most personal projects emerging into the world. I built up my itch.io page, switching fully from Gumroad for various reasons, and added a Chill Subs profile for highlighting my work and future submission tracking. The 2022 item with most future significance was an acceptance from Queen of Swords Press for my alt-history novella of Weird Horse Girls and their barmaid girlfriends. More details to come! For now, 2022 in listicle:
