Heather Says: Back in 2017, Wolf 359 changed my life. I relisten to it every year. I reread fic. I sometimes write it. And THIS year, I was blessed with one of my favorites writing my favorites from Wolf 359. It's honestly exactly what I wanted out of a Wolf 359 fix it/coda.

“Do you have a secret teenage son?” Stiles demands, as soon as Derek opens the door.
Heather Says: I did NOT watch the Teen Wolf movie this year. I did, however, relentlessly stalk reaction posts and (very select) gifsets. I also read this fantastic fic, which is now the movie in my brain because since I didn't see it, I'll never know.

A man with spider-themed superpowers accidentally breaks into Wade's apartment.
Heather Says: Deadpool is one of those fandoms that I'm technically a part of because I like it and I think Spiderman and Deadpool is both hilarious and hot, but it's always just on the edge of my peripherals. But sometimes Steve's fic just kind of creeps on me and demands my attention. This was my feel good fic this spring.
4. By the Laws of Magic by Lenore | The Sandman | Dream/Hob | 32k
It’s 1959, and Hob Gadling is working at a London auction house, amazing his colleagues with his uncanny knowledge of art and artifacts from the 14th century on. When he gets the assignment to catalogue a family library at a place called Fawney Rig, he looks forward to a working vacation in the country. What he finds is a house with a preternatural chill where odd disturbances happen daily, an ornate carved door with a secret clearly hidden behind it, and visions of his mysterious stranger every time he turns around.
Heather Says: I honestly love this ship. The fairy tale elements combined with the very compelling idea that in another universe much like this one, Hob Gadling ends up saving Dream from his glass prison made for some truly great fiction.
5. Dawnshot Through the Heart by @sirnotappearinginthisblog | Wax&Wayne series | Wax/Wayne | WIP | 80k
Ten years ago, Wayne fled instead of letting himself get arrested for murder. He’s been an outlaw ever since, keeping one step ahead of the lawkeepers who want him dead or alive—especially Dawnshot. But his luck was bound to run out eventually, and he knows how it always ends for the Bad Guys in stories.
Heather Says: I think that this is the only WIP on here but I cannot rightfully leave it off because I LOVED this fic this year. I love the Mistborn series, but I've never really sought out fic for it before. This one though, this one found me. The writing is SUPERB and I wish it was a bigger fandom because it deserves so much love, you guys. It's so so so good. I love Wax and Wayne's dynamic in the series. They're great. But also- what if they had an enemies to lovers thing going on that turned poly? WHAT IF?!
6. One Size Fits All by @entanglednow | Stranger Things | Eddie/Steve | 65k
Steve just wanted to do something nice for a friend, he doesn't mean to get Eddie's ring stuck on his finger, and it's definitely not his fault that everyone he knows is jumping to conclusions.
Heather Says: This is not the last time that you will see this author or this ship on this list. I really would have thought that Steddie would have crept out of my brain right now, but NOPE. And part of that is because every couple weeks entanglednow drops an absolute BANGER of a fic that obliterates my brain for anything else.
7. you are spring by @wildehacked | Supernatural | Castiel/Dean | 20k
God makes a wish. His parents work some things out.
Heather Says: I got very close to leaving this one off the list, not because it wasn't good or that it wasn't one of my top 25 but purely because I've been out of the Supernatural fandom for so many years. I mean, c'mon. I didn't watch the last FIVE seasons. However, getting to follow along wildehacked's rewatch journey on twitter was a blast from the past and then THIS lovely shining fic that they churned out lured me back in for one last nibble at this ship that took over my life for the better part of a decade. It is so incredibly amazing and since I never finished the series, I will happily go on pretending that this is how it ended.
8. Interim by starkraving | BotW/TOtK | Ganondorf/Link/Zelda | 95k
She has no throne. Girls without thrones should not have knights, but hers won’t go. Princess Zelda – the girl who killed Calamity – would love to fade into legend, but Link’s bought a house, he’s fighting off monsters, and he’s selling giant horses to strangely familiar Gerudo men. She'll never have any peace now.
Heather Says: This fic. THIS FIC. Is so richly built. Is so intoxicating. It leans into found family. You spend chapter after chapter watching Zelda and Link traverse Hyrule with the hot Gerudo that they met along the way after the events of the first game. And it is so fucking compelling. Honestly, while I'm happy that they smooched, I would have been completely fine reading another 100k of just these three wandering Hyrule together, being absolute goblins. 10 out 10, will read again.
9. one hundred years past by tciddaemina | BotW/TotK | Ganondorf/Link | 38k
Link wakes up a century early. It changes everything.
Heather Says: Can you tell that playing Tears of the Kingdom left me desperately thirsty for any and all Ganondorf content this summer? I'm a sucker for all sides of the poly triforce but I'll admit that Ganondorf and Link scratches that enemies to lovers itch PERFECTLY if it's done well. And this one is done well.
10. Step Right Up by entanglednow | Stranger Things | Steve/Eddie | 3k
Steve had mostly given up on trying to meet anyone new after everything, but it's been six months and his friends had started giving him pointed nudges to get out there again.
Heather Says: Told you it wouldn't be the last you saw of entanglednow. I actually think that this might be my favorite fic that they've written? Which is saying a lot because I will scream it to the rafters that any Steddie fan should read their fic. But this is FUN HOUSE MIRROR MAZE and MISTAKEN IDENTITY KISSING. Guys, I have no chill about this fic. I have no chill about Steve's hands in Eddie's hair, or the sounds that he makes, or the smell of strawberry. It is just so so good.

Sixteen years after the world didn't end for the last time, Max Mayfield showed up on Steve’s doorstep and said, “You gonna walk me down the aisle in May or what?” Or, it’s 2002 and Steve Harrington attends a wedding, a funeral, and a birth.
Heather Says: I genuinely do not think that I have words for this one. It is one of those all encompassing fics that sucks you in and just won't spit you out again. It hurts, an ache just under the breastbone. But god, it's so beautiful.
12. Fight Night by @rlnerdgirl | Teen Wolf | Derek/Stiles | 12k
Stiles starts fighting in college. He doesn't tell anyone.
Heather Says: There are three...? Yeah, three Teen Wolf fics on this list. Three. Like it's 2015 again. Like my brain broke and time went ticking all the way back to when I was ridiculously invested in these characters. But honestly? All three Teen Wolf fics on this list are incredibly therapeutic. They get to be the ending for me instead of whatever clusterfuck good ole Jeff tried to pull. This one in particular is fantastic because it's canon-divergence after SEASON one. Yes, we have Erica and Boyd. Yes, Stiles is BAMF. It's a good read.

“Can’t believe a pretty thing like you has to come begging to the Red Hood,” he says against Tim’s neck. “Thought they’d be lining up down the block for you. Thought Daddy would need to get the shotgun.”
Heather Says: Oh look, another ship and fandom that I was only peripherally aware of that had me in a chokehold for a good month and a half. I don't even like DC that much.
14. Silver-Tongue by starkraving | Baldur's Gate 3 | Astarion/Karlach | 9k
Astarion fast-talks an abnormal number of enemies into killing themselves in the shadow-cursed lands and the team makes idle (then less idle) conversation about it.
Heather Says: Okay, so I STILL have not finished this game. I have however very carefully consumed as much content as I can get my hands on without being completely and totally spoiled. This was the first fic that I really loved in this fandom. It's no surprise that I ship Astarion happily with everyone, but damn is he good with Karlach in this one. Their characterization is perfect.
15. A Sign of The Morning by ToEdenandBackAgain | Stranger Things | Eddie/Steve | 86k
Vecna is dead. The Upside Down is cut off from Hawkins yet again. Steve is trying to go back to normal, whatever that is. He's also trying to figure out exactly how Eddie Munson has managed to fit so easily into his life.
Heather Says: Honestly? What can I say about this one? It has 19,000 kudos despite being published last June. It's on a ridiculous number of collection/rec lists. The tension is exquisite. The found family? Even better.
16. Phantom of Truth by Haiju | Danny Phantom | Maddie Fenton & Danny Fenton | 58k
Locked away in a secret government lab with Phantom as her sole object of study, nothing stands between Maddie and the truth... except, perhaps, herself.
Heather Says: Oh look, another fandom that I have never ever been a part of. I saw this REALLY NEAT and angsty tiktok (tw for ghosty gore) and basically immediately was sucked into a show that I've never even watched before. The comments lead me to this fic which is perfectly gen, angsty, and honestly absolutely perfect. I cannot get over how much I loved this.
17. Manacled by senlinyu | Harry Potter | Draco/Hermione | 370k
Harry Potter is dead. In the aftermath of the war, in order to strengthen the might of the magical world, Voldemort enacts a repopulation effort.
Heather Says: I did the thing. I read the incredibly dark fic that I've been avoiding since 2018. I typically steer-clear of anything that is overly bleak and I do not tiptoe into non-con waters often. But one of our groomsmen who isn't even involved with fandom read this so that his girlfriend would watch Star Wars with him and then spent a good portion of a Halloween party talking it up. So I gave it a shot. Over all, it is too bleak for me. That said, I finished it in a weekend. I loved it. I hated it. I wish I'd broken it up over a longer period of time because the emotional bleed off of it was intense.
18. Ready for Love by @idiopathicsmile | Singin in the Rain | Cosmo/Kathy/Don | 12k
Don and Kathy would move in together. They would have a dog or two and then inevitably, a small parade of adorable little brats who would call him Uncle Cosmo, and they would spend less and less time with him, not on purpose but busy with the rest of their lives, and ultimately Cosmo would learn to make his peace with it because he’d have no other choice and he would have to try to move on and not live too much in his memories. He could picture it so clearly, he figured if the songwriting gig with Monumental didn’t pan out, he could always return to the backwater circuit with a new act: The Amazing Cosmo of the Cosmos—ladies and gentlemen, he sees the future, he reads the stars, he silently pines for his best married pal and all the while tap dancing!
Don and Kathy inviting him along on their honeymoon, though—that part was a surprise.
Heather Says: I LOVE this movie. It is one of my biggest comfort movies. I watch it to feel happy. I watch it when I'm sad. And I have always shipped these three but NEVER read fic for it. And honestly? I'm glad I waited for a good fic to find me because this one was perfect.
19. A Series of Forgettable Events by @trensu | Stranger Things | Steve/Eddie | 27k
Steve wanted to be a dad more than anything. Unfortunately, he was a single dude in his thirties which meant no adoption agency in the world was willing to give him a chance. Or at least no human adoption agency.
Heather Says: Honestly just a delightful little jaunt in a world where Steve wants to be a dad, Eddie is a very overprotective siren, and the kids are, well. Little horrors. I love it. There's a sequel now which I am very patiently waiting to read it until I am less busy in RL.

Arthur is married to Eames for the better part of a decade. Then he wakes up.
Heather Says: This fic left me ACHING for the Inception fandom circa 2010-2012. When livejournal was still a thing and the fandom community was alive and thriving. It is so achingly tender and perfect. I had forgotten how much I loved them.

Ten years on, in a town in Nova Scotia, on the edge of the Atlantic, Eddie finds Steve again, and also maybe himself.
Heather Says: Maybe that's my thing this year. Achingly sweet tender pieces that leave you reeling in the aftermath. This fic is SO incredibly beautiful.
22. What Made Milwaukee Famous by synthetica | Danny Phantom | Vlad/Danny | 30k
Ten years after establishing a tenuous truce, Danny crash-lands at Vlad's Milwaukee lakehouse with a particularly nasty wound, three days recovery time, and absolutely nothing to do but talk to his long-lost archnemesis.
Heather Says: I'm told that this is something of a rarepair. However, from the limited information that I have from the series I can say with full certainty that two ghostly beings locked for years as enemies growing up and meeting in the middle? Fully my thing.
23. then now and always by @raisesomehale | Teen Wolf | Derek/Stiles | 13k
Stiles is stuck. Stiles is stuck in the fucking snow in the middle of bum-fuck-nowhere at night with a broken down car three days before Christmas, and the nearest tow truck company—over fifty miles away—doesn’t open until morning.
Heather Says: And here we have the promised third Teen Wolf fic, the most cathartic of the bunch. I am so so sweet on future fic particularly in this fandom with missed chances. And this one is just so syrupy sweet. It's winter! There's horses! Derek's an alpha! They smooch. Anyway, this is how I cope with a series finale that didn't happen and a movie that doesn't exist.

Heather Says: What do you mean you didn't spend all three replays of the Loki series finale weeping into a pillow? What do you mean you didn't spend the next few days trying to find the perfect coda? What do you mean that you didn't find this fic and positively expire from the sheer fucking tenderness in Mobius' voice? What do you mean? What. do you. mean? Anyway, I know I'm not supposed to have number one favorites. This list exists because I cannot condense it further than 25. But guys, this was my favorite fic this year.

Either my angsty harringrove fic I wrote for Mona - we've made a graveyard out of the bone white afternoon - or my Merlin fic where I made The Darkest Hour worse :) - the weight of one man's grief

It's gotta be this steddie fic, I think this is one of the fluffiest things I've ever written - and in the darkness you will see the sun

Nope! Thankfully I'm not popular enough to get hate on fics, the most annoying thing I get is people being a bit too demanding

Oh god, I have this huge Stranger Things steddie fic that was originally meant to be for the big bang before i dropped out - i only have like 20k? 25k? written and my estimate was like 80k or something....god i'd love to finish it, the plot is Fantastic, but I really just don't know if I'll ever get back to it.

Probably prose and uhh someone told me once I was really good at like, narrowing in on the small details, also writing grief

writing fluff! the struggle is real and that's mine

Tag: 2022 Writer Wrap-Up!
I was tagged by @whimsyqueen! Thank you! And please ignore that I’m filling this well into February.
I think these were originally for fanfic writers or writers who write short fiction, so my answers might be boring lol. Also please forgive if I reference things from 2021, as time has congealed into a giant ball since mid-2018.
Total number of completed works: uhhh none? oops. I’m very much a long form writer and I have a full time job so finishing things takes me a while
Total number of WIPs worked on this year: maybe 16? but most of them were just a few lines or developing ideas.
WIPs neglected this year: Indigo Wars Book 1 😬 sry bby. and Remnants which hasn’t been touched in a while.
Fandoms I've written in: none :( all og fiction
Total word count: oh god probably over 80k? maybe over 100k? i should really start keeping track
Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you expected? definitely less. i moved back in with my parents in early 2022 and had a lot of trouble writing after that. i’m hoping to turn that around in 2023 (or move out again to protect my free time).
Did you take any writing risks this year? i started a new wip that centres around a love triangle that becomes a poly triad, and i have genuinely no idea how to write that! the risk did not get very far as i’m now stuck on the set up for the actual plot lol
Do you have any goals for the new year? write more! as i said, 2022 and the first part of 2023 have been really hard in terms of writing and i want to turn that around. i’d also really like to FINALLY finish editing the current draft of Indigo Wars 1 and prep it for querying, then start editing Remnants
Biggest disappointment? probably my overall productivity, i really wanted to write more and it just didn’t happen
Biggest surprise? i started another new world with multiple stories set in it, which i said i wasn’t going to do after how much of a headache the vario world has given me. ah well!
Most popular story of the year? lol Remnants!! people love that story even if i didn’t write anything for it this year
What's your own favourite story of the year? also Remnants i honestly think it might be my best project to date and it makes me doubt all of my other projects
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Indigo Wars!! non of y’all seem to like IW and i don’t know why
Most fun story to write: hmm Just Jane or Open Seas, they’re both absolute delights
Most unintentionally telling story: tbh they’re most telling as a whole, when you realize that almost all of them are about women who think they’re full of rage but are actually full of grief
My favourite part of writeblr this year: my friends!! honestly they’re the reason i stick around even when my creative output is subzero
i’m not going to tag anyone bc of how far into 2023 we are, but if anyone wants to do it, feel free to steal it!
(this also made me realize i finished Remnants over a year ago which is absolutely wild)

portfolio review debrief (I met with 4 people) (this is really long):
#1: reallyyyyy nice, she graduated 30 something years ago and was actually the mom of another one of the reviewers there. she has her own design agency and said my portfolio was exactly the type of thing she looks for when hiring people out of college :-) a great start to my day
#2: very recent grad, our time at cal poly overlapped some years. she doesn’t really focus on the same type of design i do rn BUT she worked for a theater poster production company for a while and said she could recommend me to them because my illustrative work would be perfect (as a real job or freelance).
#3: oh my god this is the one I really wanted to talk to. she works in publishing and when I stalked her before reviews I found that internship i got rejected for (lol). I am so pleased with how that meeting went and she had some great insights for me. plus she loved one of the projects I showed and said it would be something she would hire me on the spot for. everyone actually liked that specific project but its also a wip sooo im going to email her when im finished with it to show it off :) BIG MOMENT FOR ME
#4: this guy is like a renowned ceramicist (80k followers on insta?????) (he’s also a graphic designer) but i didnt get a chance to talk about his ceramics because he just systematically gave me feedback on every project I had. definitely had the most criticism on my presentation which I appreciated, though it is odd to get some feedback that directly contradicts advice given by other people lol. but im going to remember everything he said 🙏

there seems to be a revolution where people are finally realizing how silly high poly cc is. and with high poly we're talking stuff that's like 30k polygons and more. keeping one or two items above game ready (10k) poly in your game is fine, just don't put it on every Sim or in every build.
but when there's ppl who's cc is always disgustingly high poly, it's gonna fry your pc eventually. that's items that are always 30k and more. 1 (one) top at 50k. a pair of shoes at 30k. a hair at 80k. now say you have 20 pairs of shoes and 20 tops and 20 hairs. that's 20×50 000, 20×30 000 and 20×80 000. I don't math well but I'd say farewell graphics card. and this is just an example. that and the fact that people charge real actual money for it.
of course, this is just my opinion. but unless you hate your pc, check the poly count using sims 4 studio before you add things to your game.

So I decided that for my day nine, I’d do a list of some of my favorite fics to give the fandom authors some recognition. Of course, all of our fanfic authors are amazing and I’m so grateful that they do what they do, but these are just a few of my favorites.

Phenomenal fic, I’ve read it so many times and I adore it

Time Travel AU!!! Starts after s6, but resets back to s1 canon divergence. The hundred all wake up on dropships and they all remember up until their deaths, and then it’s this thing where the mains all take charge and start herding up their crew. I just read this one recently and g o d is it amazing. After being left alone during Praimfaya, Clarke finds herself becoming desperate after being alone for so long. I just found this fic a few days ago and holy shit is it a piece of art. I finally went through and read the entire 80k fic last night, it’s absolutely enthralling. Basically, there’s this gene called HTS and Clarke ends up having it, and so does Bellamy, and it’s just a beautiful story from both a romance and a plot standpoint. Such an interesting concept

Basically Clarke gets severly injured and ends up with augmented limbs, and Lexa, thinking Clarke dead, has some pretty severe reactions to it all. Kind of an enemies-to-lovers, but it’s set after the s2 finale
Clarke Kom Azgeda by FMLClexa (WIP)
This fic combines so many of my favorite ideas it’s amazing. Coming back after a long hiatus, basically Clarke gets sent down to Earth alone and ends up in Azgeda territory. She’s tortured and trained into Nia’s top assassin for years, and eventually gets the order to infiltrate Polis and kill the commander. You can guess how that goes
A Riffle and the Sea by Follower_Of_Mania (complete)
I will say it’s been a while since I read this fic but it’s amazing. Another Clarke gets sent to Earth alone AU, but she gets adopted by Floukru and trained to be a seriously badass killer grounder, like even Lexa is pretty put off by her. Clarke and Lexa develop this really interesting relationship where half the time you can’t tell if they love or hate each other and it’s amazing

So this isn’t entirely clexa, it’s also clarke x luna but it’s clexa enough. Basically Clarke and the hundred get injected with this solution before being sent to the ground, and it causes certain people to develop supernatural powers. But Clarke gets injected with a special serum that causes her to be extra-OP but like in a very very good way

Another Time Travel AU where Clarke kills herself and, after having a discussion with the goddess of death herself, wakes up back in time. She (and her accomplices) work out how to rewrite their story and make everything go better than it did last time. One of the best time travel fics, in my opinion

This has long been one of my favorite fics, I love AUs where Clarke turns grounder, and that’s exactly what this is. Basically Clarke has a healing talent, so she can heal herself and others on command, and during s1 gets separated from the 100 and ends up with Heda. Another fic that isn’t likely to get updated, but it’s 100k of goodness that you h a v e to read
Whispers In The Dark (Lead Us To The Light) by JadelynDeath (WIP)
This one also hasn’t been updated very recently, but it’s still 50k good words to enjoy. Wanheda!Clarke AU where Death is a real being and takes a liking to Clarke before she even touches the ground, and once on Earth Clarke is an absolute badass in leading the delinquents.

It took me so long to actually finish this fic once I started reading because oh my god the angst, it was actually too much for me. This is a beautifully written story, so many emotions, can’t recommend it enough. Basically, Clarke gets separated from the 100 and ends up temporarily mute while she’s taken in by Heda

Another big-time favorite, this has badass commanders Heda and Wanheda. The grounder culture is different in this fic, but in such a good way. They’re much more tribal than is portrayed in the show, preferring not much clothing, bloodthirstiness, but it’s amazing. Also Bellamy comes in and makes a fuss of things

Role Reversal AU where Lexa comes down with the 100 and Clarke is a BAMF Commander of the grounders. It’s been a really long time since I’ve read this one but I remember loving every second of it. Faintly follows the s2 plot, but it’s different enough that not a second of it is boring

Okay so basically this story was discontinued, but the author left a summary of how it would’ve played out at the end, so it’s... complicated. But this is another one of my favorites!! Lexa was at the explosion on the bridge and got injured, Clarke brings her back to the dropship to care for her. A lot of sexual tension ensues

I love love love this fic!!! So basically the dropship landed in the sea rather than on land, the ship explodes, leaving Clarke stranded alone in the middle of the ocean. She’s rescued by a clan called Tseekru and after years of living with them, has a run-in with our one and only Heda and sets this whole thing going. Amazing fic, so many twists
Returning to Hell by ElseworldKara, littleraider99 (complete)
If you haven’t read this fic what have you even been doing honestly. Set two years after the s2 finale, Clarke leads the coalition beside Heda, and she’s returned to Arkadia to finally tell them to get their shit together or suffer the consequences. Very dark, a lot of character bashing on Abby, Bellamy, and others. An inspiration for many of my own fics

I haven’t read the most recent chapters of this, but it’s phenomenal. ABO universe where Clarke is the only omega sent down in the hundred (later followed by Raven), and they have to deal with the grounders and nature. It’s a lot more interesting than I make it sound, promise. Also very octavia/raven based too

Very angsty, very smutty fic. Clarke finds an injured Lexa while out of camp and takes her to the bunker to help her heal. Lexa pretends she can’t understand English, but even with the barrier, things get heated very quickly. You can imagine the chaos when Lexa’s secret gets out. Must-read

This is pretty short, only 16k words, but god is it good. If you like dark!clarke, this is the story for you. Clarke, Lexa, Octavia, and Raven are all a bunch of criminals who run around- saving people?? That makes it sound like a superhero story but no, they’re all badass. Clarke is literally a psychopathic ex-assassin. It’s just an amazing fic
Are You A Kidnapper? (Because You Abducted My Heart) by 707 (complete)
This isn’t normally the type of fic that I like to read but I’m so glad I picked it up. So Clarke and Lexa have this hatred going on between them that’s actually just hidden attraction, and they’re finally forced to address it when they get kidnapped and locked in a room together. This fic has it all, fluff, smut, angst, an amazing plot, it’s just all around wonderful
Make Two Halves Whole by awkwardrainbow, Lexawoodz (WIP)
This one I also don’t remember all that much about other than that it was amazing. It’s been years since it was updated, though, so I doubt we’ll get any more, but what’s there is 80k worth of goodness. Clarke and Lexa meet online through Twitter, living on opposite sides of the US, but still manage to fall in love with each other

Can I ask about the Heaven’s Official Blessing story featuring the four person polycule?
(And I will never stop using the word polycule, it’s too cute. 🥰)
In short it's me taking advantage of the MANY VERY THINLY VEILED EXCUSES FOR SEXINESS the author included in her worldbuilding to work around Chinese censorship (It's not kissing, it's CPR...on a ghost. They're just sharing spiritual energy...with their mouths. The villain wants to undermine the hero's purity...with sex pollen. And so on), except in my case they let me work around the Very Good Reasons these characters have for not getting together.
Like my polyfic tends to balloon out into extended emotional wrangling and I was like “what if instead I just throw as many tropes at these characters as it takes to make them kiss”.
Further explanation will require some context for anyone not familiar with canon. Spoilers ahead, along with discussions of sexy worldbuilding and a lot of rambling.
The polycule (agreed, very cute word):
He Xuan: Tsundere ghost who never admits to liking anyone, but plausibly likes all the others in his way. Ally/employee of Hua Cheng.
Shi Qingxuan: Flirty and good natured god, kinda innocent. Good friends with Xie Lian. Was shippy friends with He Xuan until [MASSIVE SPOILERY TRAUMA].
Xie Lian: Good natured god, DEEPLY sexually repressed after 800 years of celibacy. Good friends with Shi Qingxuan, falls in love with Hua Cheng over the course of the book.
Hua Cheng: A ghost who has spent 800 years single-mindedly, jealously, sexually, romantically, and religiously obsessed with Xie Lian. Disdainful of pretty much everyone else but is vaguely positive towards Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan.
So Xie Lian/Hua Cheng is canon, and I can see Xie Lian being ok with poly. It's not too hard to imagine all the subships being into each other, that's why I'm into the ship in the first place.
The tricky parts are
(a) Getting Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan past the MASSIVE TRAUMA.
(b) Getting He Xuan to admit to feeling anything positive towards anyone.
(c) Having Hua Cheng react to the idea of opening up his marriage with something other than murderous jealousy.
I'm 80K into a Shi Qingxuan/He Xuan fic still solving (a) and (b), so am inclined to just gloss over that part and say "go read Into Deeper Water" >.>
The best solution I can come up with for (c) is for Hua Cheng to become convinced that it would make Xie Lian happy.
Some key events in canon:
Everyone but Xie Lian has spiritual powers, which can be transferred by touching or bodily fluids. He borrows magic from Hua Cheng and Shi Qingxuan by touching hands.
Hua Cheng is clearly interested in Xie Lian from the start, and Xie Lian is interested back, but massively in denial about it all. Shi Qingxuan is largely oblivious.
Shi Qingxuan loses their powers, and then MASSIVE TRAUMA happens, and they and He Xuan vanish from the plot for a few hundred pages.
Xie Lian "sharing powers" with Hua Cheng gets increasingly sexy and eventually he admits to himself he's into it.
Shi Qingxuan returns! Hua Cheng gives them spiritual powers via magic candy instead of touching them. At one point Shi Qingxuan shares Xie Lian's consciousness while Xie Lian is naked, they're both ok with it but Hua Cheng is Not.
Xie Lian and Hua Cheng get together.
He Xuan, in disguise as Hua Cheng to fool the bad guys and avoid awkward conversations, gives Shi Qingxuan power by shoving them and then walking away very quickly.
Hua Cheng is extra dead for a year, and Xie Lian pines. He Xuan keeps to himself but is invisibly watching from the shadows.
Hua Cheng comes back.
Xie Lian has regained the hypothetical ability to have spiritual powers but since his cultivation path required chastity and he is Very Much No Longer Chaste he has to borrow powers off Hua Cheng a lot, sexily.
Shi Qingxuan remains at least partly oblivious to what’s going on with Xie Lian and Hua Cheng.
So! I feel like there's some way to combine Shi Qingxuan being into light hearted flirty teasing and Xie Lian being in a headspace of "Sexy touching while getting spiritual power can TOTALLY BE A NORMAL PLATONIC THING BETWEEN FRIENDS" to end up with them doing something mildly sexy before Xie Lian has realised how much he likes Hua Cheng. Possibly with Hua Cheng there, doing his best to stop it, but also having to accept that Xie Lian seemed pretty into it.
Then things mostly follow canon, but Shi Qingxuan hits on Xie Lian during the year Hua Cheng is extra dead. Xie Lian politely rejects them and Shi Qingxuan apologises for not realising the two are together but there is a mutual Awareness of the Possibility.
Once Hua Cheng comes back Shi Qingxuan and Xie Lian would never act on their mutual attraction...until some sort of Horny Worldbuilding Contrivance like sex pollen makes it very clear that they are both into each other, to them and to Hua Cheng.
Hua Cheng's response is to order He Xuan to stop invisibly stalking Shi Qingxuan and instead show up as himself as a distraction/other friend/source of spiritual energy, partly to distract Shi Qingxuan from Xie Lian and partly because he thinks it's genuinely what's best for the two of them.
Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan work through their trauma to return to being friends! This DOES NOT TAKE 80 THOUSAND WORDS. Things get shippy, and when Shi Qingxuan realises this started on Hua Cheng's orders thinks Hua Cheng ordered the shippiness too (which he did not) and is VERY ANGRY on He Xuan's behalf but Hua Cheng explains and the three of them get closer.
And then...somehow...Hua Cheng becomes convinced that Shi Qingxuan/Xie Lian is a good idea (more horny worldbuilding?? Something to do with helping Xie Lian work through his own BUCKETS OF TRAUMA? idk) Everyone else is less convinced, and He Xuan gets jealous in a tsundere way because that's everyone he remotely likes in a big polycule excluding him.
And then...the four of them work it out?? Somehow??? ...this is where I get stuck with tens of thousands of words of emotional wrangling again /o\
OH ALSO I came up with some NEW AND ORIGINAL sexy worldbuilding: spiritual powers are only transferred by bodily fluids. Most people would default to a tiny drop of blood, but this would make it easier to jump to kissing and/or sexy blood drinking. Still doesn’t fix the emotional issues, maybe I need some sort of Romantic Plot Contrivance like...idk...soulmates??
IDK. I will probably never write this. But this is the ideas I have!

When Azula is nine, she becomes an only child. She hears the Fire Lord call for Zuko’s life, and in the morning, her mother and brother are gone. Azula may be young, but she isn’t naive. She knows what happened to them.
Which makes it all the more surprising when Azula tracks the Avatar down and fights his group of peasant friends, only to find herself staring into an eerily familiar face.
Drarry (Harry Potter)
7. *The Mirror of Ecidyrue series* by starbrigid | Draco is dark and that’s not a bad thing - a lot of Uncle Sirius feels - time travel - oblivious Draco - 5+ parts
All it takes is one look in a mirror and an ill-advised attempt to shatter it, before an embittered Draco Malfoy fresh out of Azkaban is sent back into his body on the day he gets his Hogwarts letter.
Suddenly, Draco has an unwanted second chance, with a Sorting Hat that doesn’t know what to do with him, a certain Muggleborn who won’t leave his study table alone, and green eyes he just can’t get out of his head. And then there’s his new wand, whose choice of him could just mark him as every bit as dark a wizard as his name means he should be.
8. Cauldron Full of Hot, Strong Love by @aibidil | have you ever wondered about the ethics of love potions and why they’re taught in school?? - hero Hermione - Romione are out there doing kick-flips while Drarry are chasing their tail - amazing worldbuilding, Rowling is an asshat - 80k
In which a group of wizards’ rights activists goes on the offensive after a prohibition against love potions, forcing the magical world to confront the horror of magic’s role in sexual assault and the murky legal nature of consent. Ron, Hermione, Harry, and Draco are swept together to solve the case, and in the process they’re made to confront their own love and lust—with and without potions.

August 2020 recap
Welcome to the first of the monthly recaps of what I’ve read and enjoyed this month! I’m going to format these posts a little differently to my regular ones, since I think it would get a little long and overwhelming otherwise. I’m also going to split it into new reads and rereads, just for the fun of it. Fair warning, some or all of these are likely to be fics that I’ve recced on here before, so keep that in mind!
New reads
an interlude by silklace (jihope, 1k) - jihope is a ship which is underloved, and this fic is short and sweet and has a lot of domestic sweetness in it. Would highly recommend!
We Kiss The Stars by hardheartcafe (minjoon, 18k) - this has such an interesting concept and good worldbuilding, and there’s a lot of interesting action packed into a small package. There is a small amount of violence, but otherwise it’s not too angsty and involves jimin overcoming prejudices!
full of flavor by stickyrum (namjinmin, 14k) - I really love a good poly story that doesn’t involve angst or cheating, and this does that very well. There is a little angst, but otherwise there’s just a whole lot of good urban fantasy, with good worldbuilding about the place of vampires in this imaginary world.
this is your life by blimpish (jinkook, 80k) - I stayed up til 4am finishing this fic. I read it all in one sitting because I literally couldn’t put it down. That might not be enough of an incitement to read this, but I really would recommend this if you want domestic awkwardness with the smallest amount of angst imagininable. It also does a good job of exploring demisexuality, if that’s what you’re about!
A Taste So Sweet by mi3likki (namgi, 14k) - namgi is one of my favourite ships for a reason, and this fic really encapsulates why that is. There’s so much softness around them, even in a situation like this where they’re doing their best to navigate each other while being minor celebrities.
Dream Glow by ratherunnecessary (jikook, 57k) - there’s only the loosest amount of multiverse stuff in this, so if that’s not your thing, you’re fine! Watching jungkook get to know all the boys while looking up to them s is interesting, and there’s a lot of cuteness involved! It also totally confirms that bts are meant to be 7.
happy that we met each other by misspamela and pearl_o (jinkook, 14k) - dad seokjin! dad seokjin! it’s very cute! seriously though, it’s a very cute fic about jungkook dealing with jin being a dad and developing a crush on him.
Rereads
I included this section because I’m a chronic rereader. I will come back and read fics over and over again, and I’m pretty sure this is just a small selection of the fics that i’ve reread this month.
Can't Let You Slip Away by edi-neil (jinmin, 10k) - I love this fic so much. There’s so many good relationship feels packed into it, and there’s good worldbuilding around the red string of fate concept! They aren’t soulmates but they love each other so much anyway!
a little house on the hill and children's names by brightlight (namjin, 27k) - The kids in this fic are ocs, but that doesn’t make it any less cute. All of the boys have their kids, and there’s just a whole lot of fluffy goodness.

That doesn’t surprise me at all - I’m so soft for dads namjin that that number feels about right. I finished my latest reread of this about half an hour before I sat down to make this post, and I have no regrets. There’s just the right balance between fluff, angst, and namjin goodness that you want from a fic like this. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I can confirm it is very cute.
