the thing that truly Truly unhinges me about infinity on high is that it is not simply an album about the horrible stomach-wrenching rollercoaster of fame and it is not solely an album about wrestling with your demons but it is a marriage of those two it is very much about fighting the worst parts of yourself in the most public avenues available. it's an album that all but rattles with the amount of references there are to medication. every seeming bout of narcissism is undercut with a sardonic twist and the snap of subtle self-loathing brimming beneath.
and the worst part of it is how that isn't even the worst part of it. the worst part of it for me is the fear. the fear of becoming something other than what you are. the fear of getting better. because this is how the world likes you - broken and stripped down to your ugly parts and embittered and exposed. this is how the world wants you, consumes you, because it's in your brokenness that they pick out such pretty patterns like finding rainbows in shards of glass. it's your wrecked-up brain with all its sporadic misfirings that draws everyone to you like moths to a faulty porchlight. i only keep myself this sick in the head 'cause i know how the words get you off. infinity on high. van gogh, the poster child for the ethos of creating something even at your lowest points. the poster child for the speculative, horrifying ethos of how your flaws and faults and fuck-ups are the only things worth keeping. how often have we seen that rhetoric. if van gogh wasn't depressed, we wouldn't have gotten starry night.
on september 15th 2006 at 9:08pm est pete wentz answered a fan question about what accomplishment of his he is proudest of.
I don’t really think about success or accomplishments too often. I guess just being around. Letting myself move past who I used to be- because that person was continually unhappy. Or at least trying to get to that point and not feel like im “changing for the worse” just because im letting myself feel ok. 10 years ago I didn’t listen to anything anyone said ever for the most part.
on september 18th 2006 at 2:36am est pete wentz wrote on one of his blogs how infinity on high was beginning to feel like a "nocturnal record" as it began to take shape.
somehow the things we say mean more in corners of dancefloors and we focus on love below the waist and outside of the head. "dont you want to get better"- i just dont want you to worry. "dont you want to get better" - tonight i do. the way they say "youre committing slow suicide" when someone lights up or cuts loose. but arent we all. everything we do just shortens our life, every breath is one less. but its what makes everything so treasured. in my head. it aint a funeral babe, i just want the headline to die. recovery is the new drug.
it hurts sometimes thinking about who he was in that moment. someone so fucking scared of getting better and desperate to get better, committing every flaw and insecurity he had to paper and trying to make art out of how desperately he fucking hated himself. as if his pain was the only compelling thing about him.
that's what kills me about this record. truly. it's not just about the perils and pitfalls of fame and renown. it's about how it feels, really feels, to think that your fame is reliant on you fucking hating yourself and how that is killing you.
and yet. infinity on high. a title taken from words written in 1888, from van gogh to his brother, as he talks about how his improving health has had a positive effect on his art.
Be clearly aware of the stars and infinity on high. Then life seems almost enchanted after all.
van gogh did not give us starry night because he was depressed and suicidal and falling apart. van gogh did not make incredible works of art because of how much he was suffering. van gogh created in spite of that, because he had a brother who loved him and reasons to keep going.
pete wentz did not write some of his best lyrics on infinity on high because he was depressed and suicidal and falling apart. he wrote them in spite of that, because he had people in his life who loved him and over 15 years later he is still alive, he has 3 kids, he has his band who have been together for over 20 years and still love making music together, and at least externally, he no longer feels the need to self-immolate so the onlookers can make pretty patterns from the ashes left over.

Todays rip: 12/01/2024
9来4s
Season 2
Featured on: THE SILVAGUNNER CHRISTMAS COMEBACK CRISIS ORIGINAL SOUNDTRAXX: vol. 1
Ripped by dante
youtube
Uh, so, hi, everyone. I'm going to apologize ahead of time if this post reads a bit more shakily, a bit less structured than what it maybe usually does. I always have a timeline of rips to cover over the week laid out ahead of time, and was really not expecting to cover 9来4s as part of it - I thought, naively, that today would just be a day like any other, one more on the pile. I wake up, get dressed, check the SiIvaGunner YouTube feed - and almost collapse onto the floor in shock.
The Christmas Comeback Crisis is back. Ten hours from the point of writing this sentence, the eleventh episode of the main SiIvaGunner storyline will premiere on YouTube.
I don't think I've ever done an effective job of conveying to people just how much the Christmas Comeback Crisis means to me. Sure, rips that I love are one thing, with those you can understand what I'm talking about with just a listen yourself. But the Christmas Comeback Crisis series is so difficult to truly appreciate without the knowledge, the memories and attachment to the channel from having been with it the whole time. To me, it marked the point where all of SiivaGunner's potential as a narrative, all of the loose threads of lore and jokes, all of those feelings of joy and sadness and comradery that flew like sparks throughout Season 1s 9-month run, were distilled into a streamlined narrative. It felt as if a bunch of stray thoughts were finally put to paper, a world envisioned by all of SiIva's viewers finally envisioned with an engrossing conflict and beautiful art. And it felt to me like the team themselves knew just how golden the idea they'd landed on was, as the scope of the storyline quickly expanded from just Christmas of 2016 to eventually enveloping the entirety of Season 2's run.
The final core episode of the Christmas Comeback Crisis released at the tail end of Season 2, on Christmas Day. That is to say, December 25th, 2017. It is currently January 12th 2024 - six years, two weeks, and four days have passed, as the main story of the channel has remained in limbo. When I watched that episode, live on the date of upload, I was still a teenager. I've followed the channel since, still immensely invested, still closely following and paying attention to the lore introduced since - the Side Stories and Haltmann's Archives of Season 3 and Season 4: Episode 1, the King for Another Day Tournament and its fallout across both episodes of Season 4, the many misadventures of Wood Man across Season 5, having seemingly left the Christmas Comeback Crisis canon altogether to explore different worlds where he could have fun with little consequence - only for it all to come crashing down on him in Season 6. After all of that time, all of that buildup, after Season 7 has already been one of the channel's all-around, best-ever years - the cherry on top has landed. Episode 11.
Beyond the lore, the world, the artwork, the storyline, the characters, and the community that's supported it all, what has held the Christmas Comeback Crisis together for me and many others has been the sheer passion present in all those aspects - including, of course, its outstanding soundtrack. I've talked about it before with voiceless, with 時の回廊 <ver. CCC>, with vlEP, and now here - but dante is, genuinely, an *exceptionally* talented musician, possibly my favorite amidst the entire SiIvaGunner team, and he has been completely outdoing himself on the Christmas Comeback Crisis' soundtrack since the day it first began - his music, remixes, arrangement, and overall sound direction has breathed a kind of energy and life into the story that's immersed me in ways I could never have expected.
9来4s plays during Episode 8 of the Christmas Comeback Crisis, An Acrimonious Assault - which sort of marked a point of no return for the series. After the 6th episode, Advent of Hell, just barely managed to release during Christmas of 2016, and the 7th episode, Loves the Ladies, released four entire months later due to expressed production issues, it felt like the team had officially realized just how big the project was getting. Yet, despite the woes that the 7th episode had presented, the team pushed on - and the series continued until the end of the year. That energy, that hype and love for the channel, is echoed all throughout 9来4s, and it's a feeling I haven't truly felt since that Season that the series once ended during.
At least, that's what I once said. Because now, *we are so fucking back.*

What is Star Trek: La Sirena?
Most fans and more-than-casual viewers of Star Trek: Picard would probably agree that the three seasons of the show form something of an anthology. It was never officially called that, and some of the characters appear in (almost) every episode. Even some events and backstories do get referenced across season boundaries. But at the end of the day, each season is very self-contained, and many themes, storylines, and characters are limited in scope to one or two of them at the most.
Even the characterization of recurring characters can differ between seasons, from more superficial details (Agnes Jurati going by "Agnes" in S1 and "Jurati" in S2) to some deeper shifts (Elnor seeming more concerned with honour than candour in his brief season 2 cameos).
As such, some of us fans were thinking it would be helpful to have a shorthand with which to differentiate between seasons. Say you're interested in reading Saffi stories that centre the characters, themes, and characterization from season 1. It might be difficult to filter for that, since the "Star Trek: Picard" fandom tag on AO3 will contain fic that is set throughout all three seasons, and it won't always be clear where in the anthology it fits.
Or you might be writing stories about season 1 Agnes that you know won't sit right with people who expect season 2 Jurati when they filter for "Agnes Jurati", and you want to make it clear which version of the character you're writing about without using convoluted tags.
Enter Star Trek: La Sirena (suggested abbreviation: LAS). In essence, this is a shorthand to describe the first part of the Star Trek: Picard anthology. ST: LAS stories, art, gifs, meta, memes, etc centre around the characters, events, relationships, and themes from PIC season 1. They can be prequels, set during season 1, or take the end of season 1 as a jumping-off point to spin new stories from there (think: the sort of art/meta/fic/... you would have made before season 2 came out or if the show had been cancelled after season 1).
Tumblr media
A Few Examples (or: is it Star Trek: La Sirena?)
A fic about the crew of La Sirena going on wild adventures after the end of season 1? That is basically what this tag was invented for! A gifset of Elnor and Soji's outfits throughout season 1? Absolutely! The story of how Seven came to join the Fenris Rangers, exploring her relationship to the work and what it means for her characterization post-Voyager? Yes please! Meta about how Hugh would have survived the crash of the Borg Cube and what the protected status of Coppelius and the defeat of Oh's armada mean for his work with the xBs? We'd be lucky to have it! A fic about how Raffi and Rios met that involves six OC's and a bunch of semi-sentient holograms? Sure! A Victorian AU, where Jean-Luc Picard, Duke of La Barre, has to navigate the uncertainties of (near) fatherhood when he suddenly finds himself with a young ward, Dahj Asha, after the mysterious disappearance of her parents overseas? Hell yes! (Also: Zhaban is his butler and Laris his housekeeper. Just saying.)
On the other hand: A discussion of how season 2's evil!La Sirena compares to her prime-universe counterpart? Doesn't really fit. A fic about Agnes and Shaw meeting at the academy and becoming fast friends? Also not really, since Shaw is very firmly a season 3 addition. Meta about Seven's changing hairstyles from VOY to season 1 to seasons 2 & 3? That is more general PIC territory, rather than LAS specifically. A gifset comparing the Troi-Rikers from TNG with their appearance in Season 3? Probably not. Not even if it also includes season 1.
All of these things are wonderful and we're lucky to have them in the Picard fandom! But they don't necessarily fit the brief of "Star Trek: Picard, if it had been cancelled after season 1."
Of course, none of this is an exact science! Say you wrote a post-canon story back in 2020, before we got any details about season 2. And say, by sheer coincidence, it includes Agnes breaking up with Rios and going off on a diplomatic mission with Soji, while Rios and/or Raffi join Starfleet. Does that fall under the LAS umbrella or not? At that point (and many, many similar ones), I'd say it's up to your own best judgement.
Where do I find/post Star Trek: La Sirena Stuff?
A bunch of people have started tagging their tumblr posts with "star trek la sirena" (or "star trek: la sirena". I'm afraid the variability is a cornerstone of the Trek-tumblr tagging experience 😅). It's not much yet, and a lot of things are reblogs, so they won't show up in the regular tag search. But hopefully, we can get this tag into more wide-spread use to make it easier for season 1 enthusiasts to find stuff they're interested in. (If you tag this blog in the replies to a post you think fits the brief, I will reblog it!)
Some writers have also added "Star Trek: La Sirena" to the fandom tags of their relevant fics on AO3. It's usually in addition to "Star Trek: Picard", since it falls into both categories, so it's more an additional filtering option/sub-fandom.
Tumblr media
I'm not entirely certain this tagging is going to be permitted by the AO3 tag wranglers. I have written to AO3 support about this and am currently still waiting to hear back. I think there are precedents for similar sub-fandom distinctions, but I'm not sure what the logistical considerations might be behind canonizing a new fandom tag. If AO3 comes back asking people to re-tag their fic or deciding they won't be able to canonize the "Star Trek: La Sirena" fandom tag, we'll decide on a different tagging convention. I'll post here if and when I get a reply to my email.
Speaking of:
A Quick Note on the Role of this Blog
I'm not the fandom police. At the end of the day, this is an entirely made-up category, and how you interpret its boundaries is up to you. My goal here is not to exclude anyone or tell people they're doing fandom wrong, it's to make it easier for fans of one specific part of a very heterogeneous show to find art and stories and discussions they're interested in.
I want to really emphasise this: I'm not the high priestess of this fandom tag. I'm not the authority on what does and doesn't count. If you have a story or post that you think might be well-suited to be tagged as "Star Trek: La Sirena", but you're unsure, I'm happy to chat about it and give you my take, and/or to reblog it here and hopefully open the floor to others' opinions. If you think something I posted or reblogged doesn't really fit, please let me know, I'd be happy to hear your thoughts!
Mostly, I just want this blog to get the ball rolling for people in this corner of the Picard fandom to find each other and have an easier time sharing their work and their passion with each other.
So, that's what I'm doing here. If you have any ideas for events we might get up to as a community (I still dream of one day having a fanfic book club :D), posts you'd like me to reblog, meta you'd like to share, or anything else that might bring your fellow fans joy, I'm always eager to hear about it!
Thank you for coming along on this ride on our little speed freighter! I hope we'll all find community and a lot of fun with Star Trek: La Sirena!

so I found myself thinking about Byleth
I should make myself clear: Byleth is not a character that I find interesting or compelling. thing is, though? the more I think about it, the more I realize that there's a point of view from which to argue... that making Byleth a boring character was a feat. an accomplishment in shitty writing that defies the sheer potential of the premise.
I'll start rambling under the cut
let's get one thing out of the way promptly: I am not, whatsoever, referring to the way that Byleth's Mute Protagonist Syndrome is diegetic and woven into, even justified by, the plot. this is not a new thing that Three Houses did. it is, in fact, an observable and increasingly common tendency in games these days, because audiences still generally like their silent protagonists, but not if they don't have some spark of actual character somewhere to distinguish them from the myriad other silent protagonists that the medium is peppered to the gills with. this is even, in fact, one of the things that draws comparisons to/accusations of bandwagonry of Persona 5, whose Joker is as silent his two predecessors in the series, but absolutely oozes personality through motion alone -- and is, multiple times in the story, described by others as quiet, but determined.
but if this isn't the part of Byleth's character that I'm referring to, then, well... what's left? but again: what I'm increasingly finding mystifying is the empty space that ended up where something more substantial would very easily have been. and it starts with this: Byleth is a teacher.
we never thought much of this idea, did we? the premise of Three Houses is that this is Fire Emblem, but (partially) in a school setting. obviously, if you're going to be inserted into that story in the role of strategical leader, a la Robin; if you're going to have mechanics that turn this school setting into the ultimate unit customization gameplay -- then making the player insert character a teacher is such an obvious idea, it borders on braindead, right.
well... is it actually that obvious?
there's an endlessly immense amount of media that takes place in a school setting -- but very little of that media is about school. which makes sense. school is, famously, not interesting. school is something that the primary target audience for media with school setting is actually looking for an escape from. school settings are relatable, but relatability without adventure is, what -- a sitcom? not even that. even mundane, slice-of-life stories draw their adventure from somewhere -- but studying for midterms is not an adventure that can trivially be rendered exciting to watch.
(in fact, even if we once again look at FE16's ostensible inspiration in Persona 5, we're not really looking at a school story. the first arc of Persona 5 is about school; after that, though, the plot's scope expands, and school becomes a small appendage of the game. Joker stops attending school altogether in the final arc (as he goes into hiding), and the only difference it makes is the removal of three minuscule and intermittent mechanics -- of which one is the commute.)
all of this is to say -- despite all of the school settings, how many modern stories do you know, where the main character is a teacher?
I'm not saying there are none, but I'm just saying, I can only think of three off the top of my head, and I never actually watched the other two.
makes sense, after all -- teachers are almost invariably satellite characters. if the story is absolutely only using school as set dressing, it will make the teachers uncomplicated and competent, the sort of person you can imagine putting in charge of children without scratching your head, barring maybe one funny quirky to prevent them from being completely boring. if the story does want to dig its fingers into the school life somewhat, then the natural move is to take a look into when relations between students and teachers are tense, whether it be because the teacher is in fact a cartoon villain, or because the teacher is not readily well-liked but has hidden depths. in every piece of this equation, though, the teacher is an Adult as seen from afar, and not the Human who must embody this Adult in spite of all the adversity.
Byleth, of all people, is put in the unique position of embodying that struggle. and that's not a peculiar reading of the text or a fanonical backfill; it's something that the game actually tries to pitch as a conflict, for a brief lull.
say we forget for a moment that Byleth is Byleth, and picture this: a story about a young manwomanthing, given work as a teacher because of the, let's call her that for simplicity, headmaster's ulterior motives. work that our womanmanthing keeps being told they can do just fine, because they have a relevant skill that they've honed and could instruct the students in -- but they're sheltered and inexperienced in much outside of that one skill, so being a guide to others is not something they ever imagined themself doing. as the days go by, though, they take to the role with a natural affinity, finding it even to be something of a true calling; indeed, the longer they put in the work, the more alive they feel. by teaching others, they become enlightened.
how did intsys manage to make that story suck?

I know you post mostly Rain Code related content, but I wanted to touch upon a thought I had with Danganronpa.
When Asahina tries to get everybody killed, we know it's because she sincerely believed the survivors all deserved to die. Who can blame her? Asahina believed that her best friend has committed suicide due to the actions of the other students.
When Komaeda tries to get everyone, except the innocent Nanami, killed, we know it's because he sincerely believed the rest of the class all deserved to die. Who can blame him? He doesn't have much life left and he wants to contribute to the world, and in his eyes by getting rid of the Worst Terrorists in their world, he can do just that, change the world for the better.
The only difference is Asahina is easier to understand, more empathetic, and relatable, while Komeada is one of the most complex characters in the entire franchise.
Neither of them are right, but you understand why they responded that way and did what they did. Which is why it's so annoying to me when people use it against Komaeda as a character, if you have issue with it, then you should have issue with Asahina as well.
Feel free to talk with me about Danganronpa as well! I've played through the mainline trilogy twice and UDG once (and never again), and I've completed Ultimate Talent Development Plan and have grinded through a decent amount of Summer Camp by sheer willpower (I've also watched the Trigger Happy Havoc anime adaptation and DR3). I'll definitely need to brush up on some aspects of the more minor details of the games, but overall I think I'm up to snuff to tackle this discussion!
Nagito definitely gets a bad wrap for his actions post-Octagon. People may look back and not realize that he pulled the whole mass-murder suicide scheme all because he gained the god awful information that all of them were sickeningly horrible people except for Chiaki who was made to help redeem them. In his eyes, the people he once thought were vessels for hope were all beyond redemption after being touched by the tainted hands of despair incarnate, and decided the world would be far better off without any of them in it. It's not a necessarily good thing, by any means, but it's understandable why he thinks the way he does.
Aoi's thought process is just as intense, but it comes from emotions that people tend to sympathize with more (the feeling of wishing you could've done more to save the ones you love and pushing that onto others), along with it being a moment that doesn't really require retrospect. It's more palatable to the average player/reader, while Nagito's actions really make ya have to do a few loop-de-loops to really get a better grasp about why he does what he does throughout DR2. And neither of those writing techniques are wrong! Simple or complex character writing doesn't mean one person is written worse than the other. They're both explored in ways that make sense for the grander scope of the story being told and how they fit in it.

What’s your All or Nothing AU about? I’m pretty curious about it, IK it focuses on Dr. Venture (had hair LOL) and Dr. Orpheus. Srsly I am interested about it and its lore. 👀
I'm really gonna try hard to be brief here.
The basic gist is that after Season 2 Ep. 10 "I Know Why the Caged Bird Kills", Byron and Rusty start dating. Their relationship is rocky at first for various reason, like the fact that Rusty is kind of a terrible person and has a lot of internalized homophobia and Byron's unresolved trauma following his divorce along with his rather lawful personality clashing with Rusty's chaotic nature. They do fall in love, of course. I'm not in the business of writing a slowburn with this one. Dr. Henry Killinger showing up during Season 3 Ep. 2 "The Doctor Is Sin" is a major turning point for Rusty in the fic. Upon the revelation that Rusty is in love with Byron, Killinger switches from setting Rusty up as a supervillain to setting him up for superscience success. Ya know. Because Byron wouldn't like dating a villain. It's hard work, but by following Killinger's 'Action Plan', Rusty's able to go from literal joke to a superscience powerhouse. The fic is split into two parts. The first part is a pretty straightforward romance that goes over Rusty and Byron's relationship up to and a little ways after them getting married during the events of All This and Gargantua-2. The second part is more of an action-thriller that goes over Rusty's fight against... well... everybody. First it's just Guild, but after Rusty gets shot in the head during a protest in NYC, he declares war on the NYPD. Not like, actual gunfire and bullets war, but when you're a billionaire living in the USA, you can do a lot of shit that makes life difficult for people and Rusty is nothing if not petty. By sheer unbridled spite, he starts threatening to tip the balance of power that the OSI has carefully maintained so Hunter declares him too dangerous to live. Turns out, though, that it's incredibly hard to kill Rusty now since he has been training to not be hit and also is married to a dude who can bring people back from the dead. But while Hunter is concerned with Rusty taking over the world because he's too petty to stop and think, Rusty's concerned with something way beyond the scope of governments and Secret Governments. Aliens. Okay, okay, hang on, now - Aliens are canon to Venture Bros. In Season 2 Ep. 5 "20 Years To Midnight" we actually see two different aliens. One of them happens to be one I quote all the time with the wonderful line "IGNORE ME!" But like... if Jonas Sr was communicating with aliens to the point where 20 Years To Midnight happens and he maybe felt like the construction of Gargantua-1 was necessary (this is just me speculating) then why don't we see them again? (Probably because the series was cancelled i'm fiiineeee :'''3) but I think with both Rusty and Byron advancing their respective talents in leaps and bounds to the point where OSI considers them too dangerous to be left alone, then a threat from outside Earth makes perfect sense.
Plus, this way I can also write "Hyper-Competent 21, The Monarch, and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch Threesome" because The Monarch always steps up his game to match Rusty's EMA (Equally Matched Aggression Rating) and I love that also sooo But why does Rusty have hair? During the events of the fic, Rusty takes a look at the DNA sequences his dad left behind and realizes that his genome is fucked up. (This is canonically confirmed in Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart, but is something that you can glean through other episodes/seasons.) In fic, he goes in and uses gene therapy to patch things up a bit which causes some minor physical changes.
Don't get me wrong, I also love canon Rusty. He's a pathetic lil meow meow, a totally wet lil bastard, and I love him. I have nothing wrong with his bald headed-ness, but this way you/I can see the progression of him in fic from Pathetic Bastard to Hyper-competent Alien Fighter depending on how much hair and which facial scars he has. Same thing with Byron and his scars and how pointy I draw his ears and teeth.

🥺✨🤩💔 ask game
🥺(Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels?)
I'm just a sucker for hurt/comfort. Not even in the purely whump sense just like...you know. Keet feels bad, Keet gets comfort/love/whatever. But the whole gambit - anything from just feeling bad to actually being injured and everything in between. Those kind of scenes never miss. It's definitely not the only answer, but it's the first and strongest that comes to mind. Gets me kicking and flailing and crying and all of the above. ✨(Give you and your writing a compliment. Go on now. You know you deserve it. 😉)
I don't know anything about my writing. What is writing? I forgor.
Okay okay. I DO think I'm pretty good at writing visceral detail - like, literally. Physical sensations, thinking ofc of the especially gore-heavy pieces as it tends to be easiest/most fun in those, but I like to think this is a strong suit over all. 🤩(Who is your favorite character to write?)
I think it's got to be Keet. My attention obviously fluctuates to the hyperfixated character of the year, but Keet still holds a special place in my heart (in other words, all my projection). He has a bit more freedom of expression than Hazel does, just by nature of their personalities, so he tends to be just a little more fun. I do also find most of the limes really fun though. They're just all so...different, but also they're not all that different? It's fun to play in different spaces (Sleet's cool, calm, collected. Sheer's simplicity. Fleece. Jolene. You know) 💔 (Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart?)
This is usually a little bit outside of my emotional scope about my own writing, tbh. I'm too close to it to put me into my own feels most of the time...BUT, that being said, I think I do have an answer to this one, which would be 'Suitable' in the royal au.

I had said before that the number 108 can be unlucky. It wasn’t unlucky at all for My Hero Academia: Vigilantes. But 108 is kind of unlucky for this episode: not only are we focusing on the Villains, but we just aren’t giving their story the structure and emotional weight it deserves.
(I either opened with those remarks or just made a bunch of corny jokes about how “Meta Liberation Army” can be abbreviated as MLA--and I’m saving those jokes for a future review.)
“My Villain Academia,” My Hero Academia Episode 108 (Season 5, Episode 20)
An adaptation of Chapters 220, 221, 222, 223, and 224 of the manga, by Kohei Horikoshi, translated by Caleb Cook with lettering by John Hunt and available from Viz.
My Hero Academia is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Funimation.
Spoilers up to My Hero Academia Chapter 325.
When I teach literature, I refer to the plot as a problem: it is something that the protagonist is trying to solve. This problem can take various forms, but it is often as an antagonist that the protagonist confronts. When this episode has the Doctor refer to a “villain” as someone “who turns nonsense into action,” that’s kind of the point: the villain is here to get the plot rolling. Without them, you don’t have a hero, you don’t have a story.
It has been long accepted by a lot of fans and scholars that superheroes tend to uphold the status quo. I think the first time I gained awareness of this popular argument--although likely not the first time I encountered it--was Dr. Horrible’s mangled remark that “the status is not quo.” More recently, however, I have been reading academic books on superheroes, and not only does that argument persist--that superheroes represent law, order, and upholding traditional norms even in the face of new evidence or out of sheer obliviousness to the need for systemic change--but the argument has become that, if a superhero story does not have the heroes doing something to effect systemic change, then it’s not a good story. I may be misunderstanding that argument, but if I don’t, then it’s not an argument I can stand behind.
The argument is that superhero stories tend to reduce complex issues to having avatars for each side of the issue--the good guy and the bad guy--get into a fight, where we are focused on the spectacle rather than on seeing actual people engaging in the actual work needed to address problems not on the individual level--again, one good guy physically fighting one bad guy--but on a larger scope.
I am oversimplifying this argument, as even those same scholars will point out that, initially, of course there were superhero stories that had the protagonist taking the fight against the system. Superman is one of the ones named most frequently, whether in his initial comic book premiere doing what police and media would not to face down a corrupt senator (a sign of things to come in his later fights with Luthor and in Justice League Unlimited) or fighting the Klan (in the meta sense, fighting their analogue on the radio show and, more recently, literally in the comics). It kind of makes Superman look like one influence on the Peerless Thief in My Hero Academia, but we’ll get to him far later in these episodic reviews.
Even with that exception of Superman, it’s not hard for me to agree with the argument that heroes prop up the status quo. That has been the plot point for My Hero Academia and why this war against the villains has been incoming: a system that depended on just All Might, now depending on a wife-beating abusive father like Endeavor with his crimes not popularly known, has a level of corruption that cannot stand up with just one man’s shining example of honest goodness and integrity to be the Symbol of Peace. It was why I appreciated the manga eventually showing that, yes, there was an entire network of assassins within the Hero Public Safety Commission to keep All Might’s hands clean--and, in retrospect, while Lady Nagant was our first named example, given what Hawks ends up doing to Twice, deadly force may be frowned upon by law in MHA but has to have been something Hawks was told he had legal authority to do. (Also, as I will never stop pointing out, Endeavor unintentionally and unknowingly killed another Pro Hero in Vigilantes, and we’re just supposed to pretend that was fine.)
But going back to this academic argument, about how superhero stories tend to stick to one-on-one battles and don’t let the heroes effect systematic change, I’m ambivalent. There have been a range of superhero or superhero-adjacent stories that have the protagonist making on-page, on-screen, obvious work to not just get into fisticuffs with the bad guy. I already pointed out Superman’s first appearance and his fight against the Klan. I can also identify other examples, some hamfisted like Captain Planet, others more nuanced like Korra reaching out to Kuvira in The Legend of Korra. While the scholarship I read bristles at the idea of reducing these fights to just avatars for good and evil, I shrug and say that kind of comes with the territory of a superhero story. I hate justifying tropes: it’s like saying “this fanservice is acceptable because that’s part of the genre”--which leads to its own set of problems, especially when I hear fools defending sexualized fanservice that is just not needed for the story and is abusive by gender and representation. Heck, The Brave and the Bold animated series had Equinox and Batman battle as giants representing the avatars of chaos and order--which is confusing enough, with Equinox having a vaguely yin-yang motif that debunks any clean separation between chaos and order. And yet, here I am, arguing that this kind of fanservice of a hero and a villain beating each other up is to be expected: you have a debate about ideals of what a hero should do when you see Iron Man and Captain America each representing a side in a fight, whether the poorly handled comic book Civil War or the better film version, and even then, that film also lets the individual personalities get in the way of saying anything meaningful about government oversight and individual agency, ideas better handled in that other Captain America film, The Winter Soldier, and even then that film also gets stuck in just being about Steve and Bucky’s relationship.
All of this is me saying that, when you add a superhero to the fight, you’re going to feel disappointed that almost nothing systematically changes in its setting, not only because, as I’m hinting, these are stories about individuals fighting each other and not stories about the individual against society or nature, but also because a superhero can only change so much of their world for the better before that world no longer looks like our own or a new societal problem has to emerge to create the problem that is the plot itself for wherever the story goes next. Once a hero makes the setting into a utopia, either a new problem emerges to show the fiction of that story and that a dystopia is always married to a utopia, or the utopia is revealed to be hollow (Shigaraki’s word of the day) and fake. My Hero Academia already showed the utopia of a world where people get to live with their Quirks is fake, not only by (largely necessary) regulation of those Quirks but also, as we’ll see more with Spinner, Compress, Toga, Gigantomachia, and others, looking different, or being socially aware, or having disabilities, or being the “wrong” size, excluded you from that society.
What I’m trying to say is that, once you add superheroes into a story to fix the problem, you can’t show what systematic change looks like. How do you write a story where it makes sense that no hero came to save Tenko Shimura from becoming Tomura Shigaraki? What’s a story like My Hero Academia supposed to do to show the problems with a society, if you have superheroes who can fix those problems by beating up the bad guys?
Solution: You have the bad guys beat each other up.
In this corner, the League of Villains, people who were made outcasts because they did not fit in--which reveals the flaws of a society that is not accepting people who may not be able to change their past or their bodily conditions.
And in this corner, the Meta Liberation Army--which reveals how society breeds people in business, media, and politics who abuse laws and societal norms to elevate themselves and create a social Darwinist nightmare.
Granted, these are some foolish schmucks for starting up this fight in public, but I’ll address how the MLA just doesn’t work in a later episode review.
But for now, let the fight begin. No matter who wins, at least we see how society at large allowed these Villains to emerge--and we can either see All For One’s dictatorial forces get wrecked, or see Re-Destro’s fascistic oafs get wrecked.
Unfortunately, no matter who wins, the Pro Heroes are going to lose, too.
I am overly impressed with myself for realizing all of this. And I say “overly” not only because this is arrogant of me but also because I’m pretty sure just about every other person following this series already came to this conclusion: if you want to show actual systematic change, you have to show what the villains are up to, because they are the ones showing the holes in our society that need to be fixed. Either a villain exploits those holes to cause damage to people, or the villain is themselves representative of unfairness in the system and, by breaking the law to save themselves and others, are unfairly maligned as villains.
That being said, I’m not a big fan of the “[Insert villain’s name here] was right” arguments. Yes, Magneto is justified in his goals and ethics, and the debate is the means he takes to them, so his existence is to show why the X-Men are screwing up and need to be more radical. Yes, Killmonger is right that Wakanda’s isolationism is reckless and allows for travesties to persist, but his choices are largely out of individual desire for vengeance, so he’s an example that T’Challa can follow. Taken too far, though, and you get people who preach anti-establishment notions without having an alternative or are just trying to sound edgy rather than actually pointing to the actual problem: it’s someone who celebrates the Joker without recognizing that, no, you don’t want to be that asshole, or who celebrate villain-turned-hero Vegeta just because he looks cool and without appreciating what steps he took to change and what fall he experienced before he got to the point of being a villain.
In all these cases, if done poorly, you have the same tired trend of a villain existing only so long so that the hero changes for the better. It’s as tiresome as I unfortunately sometimes feel reading post after post celebrating how complex and sympathetic the League of Villains’ members can be when, still, a lot of them are just assholes using empty excuses to defend atrocious behavior (primarily, just All for One) or, for the most part, are people put into desperate situations (Shigaraki, Toga, Spinner, Dabi, Twice) who are doing the best they can (Twice, Spinner) even if their actions are not defensible (Toga) or also out of line (Shigaraki) due to their own refusal to seek the legitimate help they need to work through their issues (Dabi).
It’s hard to read posts online calling the League members sympathetic when we have not had a chance in the anime to know their full story. And as with the slow revelation that this setting is not really as welcoming of people of all shapes and sizes as initially hinted, so too do the villains’ backstories show that they were justified in some actions they took, except for those that led to deaths. Too bad none of that really pops up in a meaningful way in this episode that would rather tease out Shigaraki’s back story, keep dangling the obvious answer to who Dabi really is, and short-sells what should be a meaningful friendship between Twice and Giran but is just dropped as fast as Shigaraki takes off Twice’s mask. Jeez, Shigaraki, that is a dick move to Twice…
But I’m already on Page 4 of this rant, so let’s get to the episode already.
Pulling back the curtain yet again, these reviews tend to follow a pattern. Since I first wrote about the MHA anime, my process would be to first re-read the chapters, then watch the episode in Japanese, then watch the episode in English, so as to retrace my steps in how I first encountered most of these stories, as well as to see any patterns in the production process moving from manga to anime to localization. But with this episode, that practice was made nearly impossible given how prevalent the hostility towards this episode, this arc, and this season have been, especially when a friend shared numerous reactions from other viewers about this episode. Seriously, for all the whining I just did the previous four pages, you could read this person or this person who are much better at explaining why the introduction of Re-Destro to the anime sucks, for more than one reason.
So, I had a different approach: I already had the flaws to this episode shared with me by other viewers, then I listened to the English dub, then I re-read the chapters, then I watched the Japanese dub with English subtitles.
And, boy, am I grateful I took that approach, because this episode is a ton of talking--too much talking. For an anime adaptation that cut so much of Spinner’s Leonardo from Ninja Turtles narration, I’m shocked that they kept the boring parts of his narration and cut the only good parts, including the very opening that had a lot more action and gave us a reason to sympathize with these Villains.
I know I’m a snob regarding animation; I have expressed before how, despite my love for animated works, I tend to appreciate them more for what they do with storytelling rather than the spectacle of the visuals. I really dislike works where the value of the work is in the animation alone: I am here to see a story unfold, and if there is no narrative, no plot, no beginning-middle-and-end, then what I’m encountering is a museum piece, not a work of cinema. (Feel free to bash me for that hot take: I’m still railing against Patty Jenkins’s ridiculous argument from this week.)
And as with most forms of karmic punishment I experience, I pay the price: if I rail long enough about works that are only all about the animation and not the story, then my punishment is an episode where all we get is a lot of story and not much in the way of animation. Yet I can’t even say we got a story here, so much as back story, exposition, needless narration--it’s Blade Runner only bad. As much as I have loved how this anime’s storyboards stick so close to the manga panels, the pan over the League listening to Shigaraki’s vague back story felt like the least interesting way to handle this scene, especially when it excises so much of Spinner coming around from questioning Shigaraki to sympathizing with him. Who would have imagined cutting so much of Spinner’s initial narration and the opening from Chapter 220 would screw up how to adapt Shigaraki’s back story from Chapter 222.
The anime cuts how this arc begins in the manga: Chapter 220 starts with Spinner facing off against an extremist group that hates him for his reptilian appearance--a moment that would have garnered more sympathy from the audience for these Villains than this episode is exhorting. We needed a scene to get behind these villains and agree with them, before we are shocked to hear Shigaraki say what we have long expected, that he just wants to destroy everything and make everyone as miserable as he has felt, to wake us up that, no, you may sympathize with these outcasts (to use Twice’s one-word self-description), but you shouldn’t agree with Shigaraki’s goals. (I know Shigaraki relents somewhat when asked by Toga, but it’s hard to backtrack from “destroy it all” to “destroy it all but not the stuff my friends like.” How on Earth is Shigaraki going to destroy Izuku when Spinner somewhat admires the guy and Toga...well, yeah, best left unsaid.)
While watching this episode, I also was reviewing other topics about anime and manga I’m going to go into more detail about later this month, and one topic of discussion is the assumption that anime and manga, by their visual style and story tropes, especially shojo and shonen, tend to be about big expressions--emotional outpours in words, movements, facial expressions, and actions to more easily communicate what is happening, regardless of context.
I hate to keep repeating “ambivalent” in my reviews (another academic word I need to expunge from my lexicon for a bit), but I’m ambivalent about that argument, that anime and manga, especially shojo and shonen, are better at communicating. If your character is unreadable, that likely has an intentional reason: we don’t get much of a read on the Doctor in this episode, not helped by his mustache and glasses, but we also don’t get a read on what Shigaraki is up to.
This episode only heightens my regard, not just about anime, manga, shojo, or shonen, but in animation and comics at large, that not everything is readable in what a character is planning.
On the one hand, I do agree that visual works tend to make ideas easier to comprehend for some people who can engage with such visual works. As someone who teaches English literature and writing in a United States setting, I use comics in my teaching to cross language and cultural barriers, especially for students for whom English is not their primary language or who are the first in their family raised in the United States. And this teaching approach also helps in reverse: I include manga and anime in my teaching to show how not all details cross language and cultural barriers in a one-to-one correspondence, hence the challenges of translation and localization, and how all of us struggle to make ourselves understood within our own primary language to someone else who is fluent in that language, let alone trying to translate into another language or to present ourselves in a different set of cultural norms.
On the other hand, anime and manga are not a fixed genre. Yes, I agree that the images tend to emphasize big eyes, big expressions, and big motions--but that’s like saying all animation is Looney Tunes, or all animation is Disney, or is Dragon Ball, and so on. Likewise, as I’ve discussed elsewhere, shonen is more than just one type of storytelling, and the same goes for shojo. This arc of My Hero Academia is placing focus, after admittedly far too long, on the Villains as the protagonists--and their behavior pokes holes in the idea that things are obvious, when the Villains are themselves such liars, so crafty, have their own hidden agendas, are keeping secrets from each other. It’s as if their behavior is a commentary on this plot and how BONES is adapting it: the Villains are keeping secrets, so this plot is going to keep its secrets for just who Re-Destro and the Meta Liberation Army are, what their personalities are like, and what Shigaraki and the Doctor have in mind for getting what he wants. We’re even kept in the dark as to Shigaraki’s full back story; we’re in the same position he is, knowing just little bits and able to make assumptions from a handful of visual cues and memories, without fully knowing who the hell Tenko is. Add to that Spinner’s struggles to narrate all of this and to get into Toga’s mind and Shigaraki’s mind, as well as Dabi’s own secrets and agenda with Hawks, and we have a story that blows up the notion that anime and manga are easier for reading a character’s mindset: no, they are not always easier, not when the creators deliberately mislead the audience or keep them in the dark for a surprise.
By keeping so much of the audience in the dark, so that we become aware of how deceitful villains can be, and we are put into Shigaraki’s place of not knowing where he came from. This should be a set of brilliant choices by BONES to adapt this arc in this manner. But the problem is, no, almost none of this gets anywhere close to brilliant. It’s not brilliant--it’s frustrating, because we already know what is going to happen. You can just pull up the manga at low cost with a Viz account and read all of this in the order it was originally presented and get the answers ahead of time. And if you’ve been reading the manga all along, you already know how this arc ends, and you know stuff from the next set of arcs so that you do know already what Shigaraki’s back story is, what Dabi was really up to, who survives, who dies. You even learn more about Compress’s back story--stuff that really should have been hinted at much earlier in the manga, and could have been hinted in this adaptation but as of this episode has not.
Maybe that is why the anime removes Re-Destro murdering his assistant: it’s such an odd moment that it is challenging for me to get a read on Re-Destro, as he alternates in the manga between being very friendly and devoted to his comrades but also violent and heartless.
It may be obvious that I didn’t like much of this episode. I think when I stopped taking this episode seriously was when I heard the voices. Like I said, I tend to start with the Japanese dub first before getting to the English dub. And I have nothing at all against English dubs: I would not be listening to them as much as I have, often first before I ever hear the Japanese, and I would not be a fan of so many English-speaking actors in dubs if I had any animosity to the craft, their work, and the benefit they provide for creating a larger audience for these stories. And nothing against Larry Brantley and Sonny Strait, but some of this casting feels off. I wasn’t able to take this episode seriously as soon as I heard the voice distortion that was used for Re-Destro’s phone call: that took me out of the story. If I had the chance for localization, I would really need Twice or someone to call out how freaking ridiculous that Mickey Mouse voice sounded. You have freaking Sonny Strait here: use the Krillin voice, use the Chibi Ragnarok voice, use the Usopp voice--use something, really go bizarre here, it’s just a voice distortion device! And as I said, nothing against Strait, but when I hear Re-Destro when I read the manga, that’s not the voice I have in mind. For right now, HIroaki Hirata in the Japanese dub is closer to that smoothness I expected for this character. But I have no doubt Strait will do excellent as Re-Destro’s empowered form: think Strait’s role in The Intruder II from Toonami. It’s just that Re-Destro in the English dub is lacking that odd refinement I was expecting.
Granted, it’s the same problem for me when I hear Brantley as Spinner: I am making unfair assumptions that don’t suit the goals of the creators when it comes to this character. It is sadly not as obvious in this episode as it is in the manga: this arc in the manga starts with Horikoshi invoking Laird and Eastman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by having Spinner, who is already a sword-wielding reptilian martial artist, narrating just like how Leonardo narrating at the beginning of the very first issue of TMNT. I wanted a voice for the English dub that is like Leonardos, a little higher pitch and more youthful, like what Brian Tochi brought in the live-action Turtles film or what Cam Clarke and Michael Sinterniklaas bring in the animated versions. I think, for the Japanese dub, Ryo Iwasaki’s performance as Spinner is very close to what I expected. But that also may seem too obvious: Spinner may be young, but giving him an older-sounding voice can belie his inexperience, youthfulness, and naivete, similar to how people make assumptions about him by his reptilian appearance. The anime is putting me into my place--I think of Spinner one way other than who he really is, so I’m no better than the people around him who have discriminated against him for his physical appearance.
Just as I have a set of assumptions that unfairly influence how I would cast Spinner, I also think Re-Destro should have sounded more refined and less graveley in the English dub. But my expectations belie that, just the Joker whom he resembles, Re-Destro puts on this cultured facade to hide that he is just another violent gangster thug, someone who would kill his own assistant. I know I cited examples above about how complex Re-Destro is, but it’s hard for me to see him as sympathetic just because he’s crying over something he did out of his own volition: he coldly killed his office assistant Miyashita, his tears and kind words don’t suddenly make this a warm and cuddly death, we don’t get to think of him as our woobie. It only makes it more irritating that BONES so far has cut not only that scene of Re-Destro killing Miyashita but also Re-Destro’s TV commercial: it would clue us in that the reason he has that gravelly voice is because, no matter how much he tries to present himself on TV, he is not that kind of a man.
But since I invoked the Joker comparison to Re-Destro, yeah, I’m disappointed we didn’t get Troy Baker as Re-Destro, as unlikely as I imagine that would be to happen, regardless of Baker’s previous work with Funimation. It does lend a bit more to conspiracy theories on my part, though, given casting director Colleen Clinkenbeard telling Twitter followers to stop expecting Mark Hamill in MHA, it’s never happening--we can’t even get Troy Baker doing his Mark Hamill Joker.
(I’m not being fair to Baker: I’m not saying his Joker is at all bad--it is not, he has been excellent as Joker, especially playing him and Batman in the Ninja Turtles crossover film, but it is obvious Baker is performing the kind of Joker that came out of Hamill, so I’m trying to say he’s doing the “Hamill Joker,” rather than the “Nicholson Joker,” the “Ledger Joker,” or the “Caesar Romero Joker”).
It’s also a challenge to sympathize with these characters when we aren’t getting what this arc should give them: a re-introduction. I hate approaching this episode in a post-James Gunn The Suicide Squad world, but seeing how much MHA owes to not The Suicide Squad of the comics but that motif in so many superhero comics, there is that missed opportunity to reacquaint the audience with who are the members of the League of Villains. So, where the hell is my freeze-frame re-introduction to each League member? There was that fan theory a long time ago that Giran was really Present Mic in disguise: imagine doing Present Mic’s introduction of characters by name, Quirk, and pithy comment, only it’s Giran in the announcer seat this time.
(Don’t even get me started on how annoying it is to have Izuku handling the post-credit preview: give that to Spinner.)
Again, maybe it is brilliant for BONES not to include some re-introduction scenes, whether narrated by Giran or happening naturally in conversation between these characters. These Villains barely know each other’s back story, so there’s no artifice where they would believably share their back stories to each other in conversation in this context. And as I said, Shigaraki does not know enough about his own past, and Dabi is hiding his real identity. But when we’re stuck with Spinner as our half-hearted narrator, who seems not to know why he and Toga are still here with Stain being gone, and when Toga is this dull in her answer about what keeps her going after Stain’s arrest, and when Spinner himself seems not to know what he’s still doing here, all of that does not communicate a reason for us to keep going with this story.
I know this arc is going to get better, storywise at least, just based on how it went in the manga. I can only hope that the animation can capture the chaos that the original manga illustrations showed. But I am trying to think what a new viewer is going to do if this is their introduction to this series. I’m not invoking the Episode 7 Rule, I’m not doing a hypothetical experiment to gauge which episodes are the best to bring a newbie into this series--I am asking, honestly, if a fan was already into this series, and was watching it one Saturday morning, and a friend or roommate or relative saw them watching, they would be utterly lost about why they should care about this. Even the explanation for why Twice is indebted to Giran is presented as such an afterthought that does disservice to a potentially emotional moment, to what is supposed to be a pretty deep friendship, as deep as it can be for a weapons trader like Giran and an outcast-turned-criminal like Twice, so that, when Twice helps rescue Giran, we feel that emotional payoff.
It is honestly shocking that, for all the throwbacks, recaps, and flashbacks we get, including how Giran’s fingers match up to previous places where the League fought, that this still leaves a new viewer in the dark. And the problem lies at the feet of MHA arriving at a fifth-season slump: the series has gone on so long that things feel lazy and making far too many assumptions on what knowledge the audience is bringing. You’re not getting a bigger audience if you keep appealing to the diehard fans and the people reading the manga. After all, why would you keep doing ridiculous recaps and flashbacks if the fans already know what happened?
But speaking of the recaps and flashbacks, that should have been how this episode redeemed itself. As I said last time, if you re-worked the order of episodes to start with the Oboro Shirakumo story, that would be more shocking. But what if this episode could have been the very first episode of the season, and following the trend of previous seasons, make it a recap episode? We already had Izuku narrating a clip show, Class 1A at the pool, a photojournalist visiting the UA Dorms--it would be so much more interesting seeing “League of Villains camping in the woods while in the background Shigaraki gets squished by a giant.” Have the Villains tell campfire stories about how they got here: it would be a great excuse to re-use the animation and save on the budget. You could fit in a few gags, as Toga starts telling a really gruesome story but gets distracted by all the blood in it, while Twice’s story bounces between sugar-sweet happy and grim-and-dark chaos, while Compress and Spinner are stuck trying to keep them focused. It’d be a hell of a lot more interesting than how BONES somehow screwed up a potentially emotional volatile moment between Izuku and Amajiki that would put into question whether Izuku is going to have to kill a Villain and just how devastated Amajiki feels after Mirio lost his Quirk.
And speaking of whether Izuku is going to have to kill a Villain: obviously, this arc is setting up how much more dangerous Shigaraki is than UA gave him credit. Back in Season 2, I hated how Nezu and UA staff referred to him as a “man-child,” given the connotations that have surrounded masculinity and being a man. I wrote that before 2016; in this post-2016 atmosphere, and the increased prevalence of toxic masculinity, I am, once again, that annoying word ambivalent. I am likewise ambivalent how well this series has shown Shigaraki to be able to form the plan he does by episode’s end. We’re only told by Spinner how much faster Shigaraki is getting and how much slower Gigantomachia has become--but the animation doesn’t show that. And we’re being told how great Shigaraki’s plan is--when it sounds ridiculous.
By cutting so much of Spinner’s narration from the manga, we also don’t get a scene where Spinner confronts Shigaraki to ask him what is his plan. Up to that point, Shigaraki has said that, with Kurogiri gone over the last month and the computers at the old League hideout destroyed, they can’t reach the Doctor. Spinner is insistent: what is the plan? Shigaraki responds that he just told them--as Gigantomachia crashes through their hideout. The other characters explain for readers like me who aren’t following: Shigaraki just said Kurogiri was gone; to contact the Doctor, Kurogiri sought Gigantomachia; Gigantomachia would sniff out where Shigaraki is and bring him to the Doctor. Brilliant--that shows more attention to Shigaraki’s planning and scheming, and now, it’s not even here in the episode to make me think this guy is that smart. (This episode also had Shigaraki reveal his plan to have Gigantomachia attack the MLA, whereas it was Spinner who predicted that was going to be Shigaraki’s plan--so, again, we’re not letting Spinner stand out as smarter than we expected, either.)
I know Shigaraki is supposed to be our chessmaster, given his association with gaming, especially when he was faking his ignorance about shogi to lower Overhaul’s guard before defeating him and stealing his Quirk-cancelling bullets. But I’m having the same problem I had when following All For One throughout this anime: it just feels like these two antagonists are getting ahead out of sheer luck and because everyone else is a fool, not because either of them are that great as villains. Give me a Xanatos, give me a Luthor, give me a Norman Osborne (not Clone Saga Osborne, a different one). Show me Shigaraki is more than a pawn for All For One and the Doctor, because I don’t feel anything here, not even when we’re supposed to feel that Shigaraki has some legitimate concern for All For One that just isn’t getting communicated to me, whether by my stubbornness or because the content is not giving the animators and actors what they deserve. Eric Vale can sell the hell out of a scene, but Shigaraki’s talk about All For One is not giving that opportunity to the actor.
My remarks this time are a lot more disorganized and doesn’t really arrive at any conclusion. I have more to say about how this arc works and doesn’t work, especially when it comes to how ridiculous the MLA comes across in underestimating the League, but we’ll get to that next time.

NyxWeek Day 7: Its Always Worth the Wait
Hi Guys! Here is my submission for the Nyx Week Day 7!
Prompt: Fire, Camping, Sacrifice, Found Family
Warnings: Death, afterlife
 Hurt/comfort. I cried a bunch writing this.
Summary: Death looks different to everyone.  A path. A river. That tunnel with the light at the end. Nyx walked through a dark forest when the burning stopped. He stepped into a clearing, and was promptly tackled onto the ground.
“You idiot. You self sacrificing idiot. I’m so damn proud of you.” Crowe sobbed into his chest.”
Death looked different for everyone. For some, it was a path. A river. That tunnel with light at the end. Something to be followed. For Nyx, the royal violet fire burning his body mixed with the darkness blotting out his vision.
It changed into dark shapes- trees? Yes. Trees. A forest at night. A light through the endless trees, beckoning him. It no longer hurt to walk. Nyx ambled forward.
He broke through the trees into a clearing. There were several tents and chairs loosely surrounding a merrily burning campfire. Nyx had no time to process more as a body slammed into his, taking them both to the ground.
"You idiot. You self sacrificing idiot. I am so damn proud of you." Crowe sobbed into his chest.
“I did what I thought was right…” Nyx laughed wetly into her hair, crushing her to him.
They stayed like that for who knows how long. The sky did not lighten, nor did the logs on the fire actually burn down. Pelna eventually emerged from one of the tents and flopped over on them both, earning a squeak from Crowe and a happy shout from Nyx.
“Good to see you. Guess we are even now.” Pelna chucked as Nyx snatched him up in a bone crushing hug.
“Guess we are. I just…I wish…you guys…” Nyx struggled to get the words out, but his throat refused to cooperate. Crowe tucked herself under one arm and Pelna the other, and held him as he cried. So many lives lost. All their fighting. All their suffering. Insomnia was in ruins and Galahd was still in chains.
Crowe and Pelna let him cry for a time. But then they gently urged his back down onto the grass, forcing him to look up. Countless stars and galaxies danced above them, floating gently. The sheer scope and indescribable beauty of it all shocked Nyx out of his grief.
“That is the beyond, I think. Axis and Sonitus stopped here to apologize- they floated up there after we accepted their apologies.” Crowe stated, snuggling closer.
“Yeah. Really peaceful. Poor guys were so torn up about what happened, they actually floated away with relief.” Pelna chuckled.
“If up there is the beyond, where are we?”
“Not quite sure. Like a space between spaces for souls that are at peace but have not moved on yet.” Crowe murmured thoughtfully.
“Why haven’t you guys gone on yet?”
“Couldn’t leave without-” A crash interrupted Crowe. Tredd burst into the clearing.
He looked awful. Bloodshot eyes, tears dripping down scruffy cheeks, body shaking, mouth working soundlessly. His uniform was torn and bloody, covered in the dust of rubble. Nyx rushed over and hugged him tight, hearing what was actually coming out of his mouth. AllthatfornothingeveryonedeadwhywhywhywhyWHY. Nyx recoiled.
Pelna gently guided Tredd down to the fireside to sit and rest.
“Spirits that can’t move on get stuck in the woods. They wander, and can’t see the stars over them.” Crowe murmured, urging them to sit by the fire as well.
Nyx watched mutely. Tredd was a traitor. He killed so many of their own and yet was still here beside him. He could get his reasoning though. Regis gave their homes to be shackled under Nifelheim, and yet Nifelheim was also going to run over Lucis roughshod. It would be easier to side with your captors then try the impossible task of breaking the enemy. They had all died trying to keep their friends alive and to ensure the safety of their homes.
Nyx concluded that he could forgive that. They were dead after all. What was done was done. He sat next to the trembling redhead and wrapped an arm around his shoulders.
“I forgive you. You hurt many of our comrades, but did it for your home and people. I forgive you, Tredd Furia.” Tredd shook harder, crying into Nyx’s shoulder. Crowe and Pelna joined the hug, murmuring their assent. The redhead sobbed himself to sleep in their arms. The glaives tucked him into one of the tents and resumed their spots by the fire.
“Is..that what happens to people who…can’t move on?”
“Yep. They get a little crazy wandering the woods. Something holds them back. We, on the other hand, know what we are waiting for.” Pelna chirped.
“What are we waiting for?”
Crowe pointed to the fire and Nyx gasped. The flames painted moving images. Libertus climbing through the rubble of Insomnia’s outskirts with Lady Lunafreya. Others digging out of the wreckage. Libertus guiding the Princess to safety.
Another crash interrupted their musings. Luche staggered through the brush and into the clearing. Burn marks covered his body and angry crystalline fire licked the frayed edges of his bloodied uniform. He clutched at his hand, burnt to a neat crisp. Eyes half mad with grief met Nyx’s.
“The captain was supposed to keep us safe, protect our homes. No more friends would die. He promised, he promised…”
The blonde collapsed forward onto the grass, crying silently. Nyx and Crowe gathered him up and set him down at the fireside, making sure he was not alone.
“Hey. Hey- shhh. Its over now. Its all over. Its ok. You did your best.” Nyx soothed.
“I..I shot you and Crowe…I didn’t want…He promised…” Luche choked on his tears.
“It hurt like a bitch. But here…well. What’s done is done. You kept us going for so long, fought so hard with us. Its over now. Rest.” Nyx murmured, holding the blonde until he passed out, exhausted from crying.
The glaives tucked him in next to Tredd, hoping they would feel better with some rest. If ghosts could rest, that is.
They resumed their seats by the fire, watching Libertus through the flames. Nyx watched sadly as Libertus made his way back to Galahd. Waiting for him. Nyx couldn't come back, but could only watch.
Darkness and daemons encroached every nonlit space, forcing humanity to crowd into the havens and cities. Tredd and Luche emerged from the tents as Libertus took up the mantle of Captain of the Kingsglaive.
They both looked much better, wearing hunter’s tunics instead of the ruined uniforms they died in. The blonde and the redhead watched quietly, nodding at Libertus’s ascension. Tredd smiled, pointing out the few friends they had that made it through alive. Luche huffed, listing the logistics that Libertus was now in charge of, and chuckling as Libertus realized that himself and the resulting yelling that he needed a drink.
The glaives told stories and cried and laughed. They had been through so much together. Life in Galahd, fleeing to Lucis, training, deployments, living together. The little things. Pelna bringing fruit from his family’s greenhouse. Tredd’s pre battle pep talks. Crowe’s dominion on the training fields. Luche’s freshly baked cookies. Nyx’s inability to look the other way if someone needed saving. They flopped down onto the grass laughing at that last one, laughing until they cried.
Tredd and Luche gasped as they began to float. First in surprise, then in happiness.
“Guess we are ready now!” Tredd laughed, holding a translucent hand in front of his face.
“Somehow, yeah.” Luche mumbled, still stunned, trying to stand on the ground and finding himself being more and more incorporeal.
“Go on then. Find the others! Save us a spot.” Pelna cheered.
“Git! You had better save us a spot. And I demand a drinking contest when I get up there too, you hear me?” Crowe roared.
Tredd laughed and saluted. Luche nodded solemnly, then grinned as Tredd threw an arm around his shoulders and hauled them up further.
“Tell Thuir, Mahir, and Selena that I will be up as soon as Libertus gets here!” Nyx yelled.
Tredd and Luche shouted back their agreement and disappeared into the stars.
The glaives gazed up from their spots in the soft grass. Libertus whipped the surviving glaives into shape, defending humanity until the dawn returned. They could wait. It was always worth the wait.

so i’ve been binging fics to cure my sadness, and i thought that these select masterpieces were too magnificent to not be plastered on every billboard ever. some tore my soul into shreds, while others melted said shreds back whole, but all of them made me feel some form of sheer, unadulterated love, so. please enjoy! 🥰⛅️✨
note: all of these fics are exquisite and you should read all of them, but if you’re short of time, those with ☆ are my all-time favourites!

Sugawara Koushi has no idea he's already in love with the man he's supposed to hate.
i lovelovelove how all the concepts tied in together like a perfectly wrapped gift
also very wholesome, made me feel so inexplicably warm. like, love can exist everywhere!!! despite everything!!! that’s just so inspiring
i revisited this many times, i think it was (one of) my first haikyuu fics and honestly. it set the bar so high and i have no regrets

“Oh. You're. Not Asahi.”
Calmed down enough that he can speak again, Daichi takes a deep breath, his smile settling on his face easily and wide.
“Not as far as I know, no.”

Suga accidentally calls a stranger instead of his best friend, tells him all about his burned batch of cookies before realising, and that particular mistake might turn out the best one he ever made.
major, major fluff
the buildup!!!
god this made my yearning for love so much worse

Overworked, over-stressed programmer Azumane Asahi works on the top floor of a Shinjuku skyscraper. Nervous around his coworkers and terrified of the long drop on the other side of the window, Asahi falls into a miserable routine, only to have it broken one day by a simple message on the outside of the glass.
PLEASE. so well-written it makes my heart glow and ache simultaneously
made me ascend into asanoya heaven
such a brilliantly unique concept i love it A+

Asahi wants to be a Master Sommelier. It's the highest honor in wine service, and the certification would allow him to live the life he's always envisioned for himself. Too bad the certification test is notorious for being the world's most difficult.
Most people fail their first time taking the exam, and Asahi is no exception, but he has more difficulty than most dusting himself off and getting back on his feet. Enter Nishinoya, a young man who shares his same dream, and who believes in their goals so fiercely it forces Asahi to embark on a delicious and sensuous journey of viticulture and validation.
AKA The Wine Tasting AU that literally no one even knew to ask for.
NOTE: You Do Not Need to Know About Wine to Understand This Fic!
another super unique concept!!! (´∀`=)
my god their chemistry is amazing

“I never thought I’d see the day that I’d envy a human,” Oikawa admits, showering himself in tiny suns, because he can actually feels those, like a fusillade of warm kisses on luminous skin that leave marks. To humans, they’d be freckles. Skin stars, Oikawa calls them. He didn’t make that up, a human did.
“Who created the rule that we can’t touch, I wonder,” Iwaizumi ponders, floating heedlessly through space.
“Maybe it’s because we can fly. Humans dream of flying, right?”
“I don’t think so.”

Iwaizumi blinked his gaze over to Oikawa, "Last time was supposed to be a one time thing," he said, voice low, lacking some conviction.
Oikawa's lips twitched into a smirk and he brought them hovering just over Iwaizumi's, "One time thing, Two time thing, what's it matter as long as it's not a Relationship thing?"
yes.
in fact, this entire series (breaking the rules) features daisuga, kuroken, asanoya and it’s SO GOOD. every single one.
but anyway, character development!!!!! plot!!!!!!!!! writing!!!!!!!! i’m here for it all

ahhh here it is. beautiful, heartbreaking, soul-emptying agony. you want angst? choke on this, and your tears later on.

There’s a picture. Kenma blinks, looking at the little calico cat, being held up next to the face of a guy with stupidly messy hair and a crooked grin.
Cute.
The— the cat. The cat is cute.
Just the cat.
-
Kuroo starts spending a lot of time at the flower shop Kenma works at. Kenma definitely isn't into him.
okay so i like it when authors unravel a normally stoic character’s full scope of emotion and give them depth, sue me.
anyway, back on the fluff train!
i absolutely f*ck with flower symbolisms, cats and bitchy best friends who have dirt on each other. the layers of romance, friendship and everything in between is so prettily developed 10/10

i could feel my lungs shrivel up and my chest cave in on itself. fatigue and rest are things i struggle with too so this whole story resonated with me from start to finish, and it broke me. in like, the best, most revitalising way

Could you explain why and how the Inferno/Aeneid etc and other transformative works aren't fanfiction? I swear I'm not trying to be snarky, it's a genuine question. I thought any work that takes elements, places, names, characters etc from another is transformative. Where do we draw the line at what counts and what doesn't? Does quality, a completely subjective thing, factor into that? Is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies for example fanfiction or adaptation or both? Is the Aeneid an adaptation only or something else entirely?
okay i will answer this ONE last ask because you were very polite and i appreciate that
it’s a difficult topic to really discuss because, well...whose definition of fanfiction/transformative fiction do we use? i think in a situation like this it’s actually helpful to take a look at the fanlore.org wiki page for transformative works, since it talks about things like actual legal definitions of transformative fiction as determined by the US supreme court
transformative work is actually much broader than just fanfiction, although fanfiction is a TYPE of transformative work. but to claim that every piece of literature that interprets another piece of literature is fanfiction is reductive and unhelpful
i guess if i had to give any one reason for the divine comedy and the aeneid not being fanfiction, it’s because they’re not written to be fanfiction. dante is not a “fan” of the bible any more than any other christian is. he didn’t write his poetry for the bible fandom or the vergil fandom. it’s true that dante really, really likes vergil, and he draws from a lot of different sources in his writing, but that doesn’t mean that he set out to write a fanwork. similarly, vergil didn’t write the aeneid because he thought the iliad and the odyssey were the best stories ever. like, maybe he did think that, i dunno. but he wrote the aeneid on commission to be a national epic for the people of rome with clear political undertones.
you could also bring the scope of influence into this. i mean, think about how important dante’s depiction of hell is to modern christian interpretations, or think about the sheer reach the aeneid had and still has. there are some fanworks that are immensely popular, but i wouldn’t necessarily say that every well-written, popular piece of fanfiction has cultural significance (although there is an interesting case to be made about fanfic like my immortal which DOES have some measure of cultural significance at this point)
i also have a bunch of people in my inbox right now claiming that i’m being, like....misogynistic because i think fanfic only refers to shitty smut written by women in fandoms? but you really cannot bring quality into this discussion. it has nothing to do with the quality of a piece. i have read fanfiction that i enjoyed way more than i enjoyed the 5th book of the aeneid, and i don’t think fanfiction is something inherently bad or that you should be ashamed of. i love fanfiction! i love reading it AND writing it. but i also don’t think it’s incorrect to claim that dante’s divine comedy is a more influential and important piece of writing than the vast majority of fanfic ever written. again, that’s not a point against fanfic. that’s just....the nature of literature.
that was a lot of words to say about whether vergil was a fanfic writer but basically: fanfiction and the divine comedy are both transformative works- but that doesn’t mean they fall into the same category of transformative
anyway. please stop asking me about this now i am LITERALLY dying

Fuck. It’s hot in here. Too fucking hot.
Reconnaissance. That’s what you were doing. It was fucking disgusting. Everyone in the room was just as fake as the pleather belts that held their guts in. You had never seen anything more embarrassing in your whole life. Desperation was sweating off the walls and sunk into your skin. It made you feel sick.
You scoffed and took a long sip from your drink.
“One more?” An attentive maître d' asked you--if he could even been called that in a place like this.
You covered your hand over your glass. You refused to pay for any more of that cheap tasting shit.
Next to you a rapt group of men in suits wagged their tails at the view. She wasn’t even very pretty.
Rolling your eyes, you scoped out the rest of the room, adorned in red velvet and gold nearly everywhere. What was this? A high school musical? Even those had more class than this place.
You checked your sliver wristwatch lined by dainty diamonds. You always did like gifts. Too bad rarely anyone would get anything in return.
The girls on the stage twirled around, giving the audience the best view that they could, tiger-prowling to those waving bills in their grabby hands. They were tanned and fashioned into strappy and lacy pieces that looked like they all must have shared them. Pathetic.
“You come here often?”
He swirled some clear looking liquid in his crystal glass, the little string of olives clinking the side.
“Are you speaking to me?”
“No, I’m talking to them.” He head nodded to the same group of greasy businessmen. “I haven’t seen you here before.”
“It’s my first time...and likely my last.”
“Huh. Tough critic.”
He didn’t look like the rest of them. Younger, reeking less of starved attention. He had golden blonde hair, and a silk white shirt unbuttoned far into a deep V. He was toned: the muscles on his arms were visible under the thin fabric and his abs made a show thanks to the abandonment of buttons. He wore dress pants perfectly fitted for his thighs. He was...attractive...but not your type.
“What’s not to like? Beautiful people, drinks to make you forget your mistakes? Not your scene?”
You rested your chin in your palm. “It’s my scene, but not this scene.”
“Suit yourself.” He took another swing, pivoting his body towards you, legs spread wide. “I think I know someone who can change you mind though.”
“In this place? Unlikely.”
“Come on...just stay a little bit longer and they’ll come out. They’re the last act of the night for a reason.” He signaled to the maître d' and whispered something into his ear. “Drinks on me. If you’ll stay?”
“Free drinks?” You put down your empty glass. “I suppose I can’t say no to that.”
╚ ——————————————— ╝
It was thirty minutes till closing, and you had stayed much longer than you had liked. After all the drinks you had to pass the time, you were starting to feel a little buzz, but nothing much really phased you these days. You started to wonder if he had been pulling some kind of prank. Nothing you had seen was what he had hyped it up to be.
The lights dimmed behind you, making the room dark enough for the tiny white candles at the tables to provide the only light. Spotlights flashed on from behind you too, illuminating the U shaped stage. With the lights, the music faded into something much more sultry.
The first two girls stepped out, both of them wearing white sets that were nearly identical with sheer robes. Two others stepped out after them, this time wearing red and black. It was the same thing you had been seeing all night.
The spotlight tightened.
It was him.
He was wearing a button down and those same pants, everything seemed so tight on him, accentuating every curve of his body. Strangely, when he walked out, he was greeted with wolf-whistles and hoots. He winked back at his spectators, nearly falling out of their chairs to see him better. It was even stranger considering the audience was filled with men.
He walked around the girls on stage as if he was inspecting them, his eyes eating up every bit of their skin. He confidence was unparalleled. He would run his hands down their sides, digging his fingers into their hips. They circled around him until his body was covered with their hands, teasing the audience, just barely touching around his dick, which with his pants...there was little room for imagination.
Silent moans left his lips once they started undressing him giving him their full attention. The cheers grew even louder. Before long, he was nearly fully undressed swaying to the music. He wore nothing special, just some briefs, like any normal person would. It was...confusing.
He took turns “giving attention” to every girl, looking at them like he worshiped the ground the walked on. They would grind their bodies together, or he would pick them up in his arms, and they would wrap their long legs around him. He would pantomime fucking them from behind, screwing up his face as if he really was. Everyone went crazy for that.
It didn’t last for very long and the lights soon went all the way down, leaving the stage scattered with sweating bodies, panting as if they had just cum, entangling themselves all in eachother.
You were a bit unenthused, but it was different. There was something about him that was different.
╚ ——————————————— ╝
“Were the drinks enough for you?” His voice called to you just as you were about to leave. This time, he returned wearing the same silk shirt.
“I hope that I didn’t make you pay for too many.” You pouted with faux empathy.
“And the show?” He grinned a little.
“Interesting. Considering a place like this.”
He laughed a little. “I help with...the imagination.”
“So they pretend that you’re them. I’ll admit, it’s smart.”
“You’d be surprised, somedays I get more male customers compared to most of the girls here.” He bit his lip as if recalling a memory. “They pay well too, pay for whatever they aren’t getting at home. Who am I do deny them that when it’s my job?
“You sleep with them?”
“The ones I like.”
“Sounds exhausting.”
“Can be. In a good way.” He let out a sharp laugh. “So. Did I prove you wrong?”
“Hmmm. I could do better.”
He popped his brows up. “You could?”
He was intriguing. You decided to give him a bite. “I dance at La Rose Rouge.”
“You dance at that overpriced, snotty ass place?” His words turned poisonous.  What’s it like dancing for a guy who’s got a stick so far up his ass--”
“--The price is right, and you get what you pay for there...especially if its me.”
“How am I not surprised?”
“I need to go, I’ve seen all I could here.” You bowed at him a little.
“Wait.” He grabbed at your arm. “I’ve still got one more thing to show you. Follow me.”
 ╚ ——————————————— ╝
Your insides were on fire as he fucked into you. Every time that he thrust into you, he was relentless and unforgiving. He was going so fast you could barely catch your breath. You were bent over some dusty old sofa in an equally dusty dressing room. You would kill him if he left bruises on your hips from how hard he was holding you.
“fuck. shit.” He panted, then reached one of his hands around to rub at your sensitive sex, slick with your excitement.
He was so fucking cocky, but he knew what the hell he was doing. He bent over your back, sucking into your skin, wrapping his arms around you to tweak your nipples. He was wrecking you from the inside out, devouring you like he had never tasted anything like you.
He kicked your legs open even farther. “Fucking moan for me, slut.”
You had barely let him hear more than a few gasps, he didn’t deserve it. You wanted him to moan for you.
“Who are you calling slut?” You said with venom.
You shoved off of him, and he looked devastated. He was cute. He even frowned regretfully like he had done something wrong.
The metal of your rings dug into his neck when you grabbed it, squeezing as hard as you could. Your hot breath snuck into his ear, “No, you fucking moan for me...slut.”
You attacked his lips, tracing the insides of his mouth with your tongue. He moaned right into you and grabbed handfuls of your ass with his two hands. Your teeth bit his lip and pulled. His dick trembled between the two of you and he rutted against your stomach to get some kind of relief.
He took one of his hands to your hair before resting his glossy brown eyes on you. “I’d do anything for you.” His voice quivered. “You ruin me.”
“Get on the floor.” You commanded him, and he did as he was told without a question, laying his bare body on the cold concrete.
The chill of the stone stung your knees, but that didn’t matter, you just wanted to see him unravel. You straddled down onto him, taking him in as you sunk down.
“oh shit,” slipped off your tongue without you having much control over it.
You rolled your core over him, back and forth, circling yourself and bouncing up and down as he rolled his eyes back, licking his lips while you did everything that you wanted. As you bounced he held on to your ass, digging his fingertips in. You had your eyes closed, so you didn’t see it when he rose is hand to slap you hard. It burned beautifully.
“—Jisung? Are you done yet? The rest of us are going out.” A female voice called, and rattled the locked door.
“FUCK OFF.” He groaned, and held onto your ass even tighter.
You let out a unamused tsk. “Jisung? That’s your real name?”
He didn’t say anything, but instead swiftly took you in his arms to lay you down. The chill of the floor startled you into wince, but it felt amazing compared to how hot you were. He entered you immediately again, then slung your legs over his shoulders. His blonde hair appeared to bounce a little with each thrust.
You knew exactly what you were doing when you dragged your nails down his arms, waterfalling pink, perfect, lines. His whole body seized at the sensation, sending him into a fury. He licked his hand from palm to fingers, not breaking your gaze as he used it to rub relentlessly at you.
You were on the edge.
“Want my cum, you whore?”
You were close as well, and it clouded your senses--you felt yourself slipping into him after holding back for so long.
“ye-yes, I want it.”
He came in seconds, doubling over you when he did, panting like a dog, with you gasping just as hard from your own orgasm. He seemed to shake a little as he came down, nearly suffocating you with his body weight. You jiggled your hips just a little to get a rise out of him. You had guessed correctly, someone like him couldn’t take overstimulation.
“Fuck, wait, wait. I-I can’t take anymore.”
You laughed a little and stopped. “You’re no fun.”
“I thought I literally just proved to you that I’m loads of fun.”
“Mmm, I suppose.”
“You liked it?” He ran his hand through his sweaty roots.
“You made me cum, so...usually I have to fake it.”
“Really?”
You nodded.
“I’m honored.” He grinned a little pridefully.
You reached down to your hole to catch a few drops of his cum on your fingers, stretching it out a little and playing with it. He watched you as you did so, eyes wide. You stood to grab his jaw, sticking your fingers in his mouth which he eagerly sucked.
“Where have you been my whole life?” He looked up at you in wonder.
“I’m gonna pretend you didn’t just say that...Jisung.”
He watched you then as you dressed, careful not to forget your gorgeous silver wristwatch.
“I won’t be coming back, so don’t expect that this will happen again.”
“Wait--” He stopped you before you grabbed the door handle. “You didn’t tell me your name--”
“--That’s something you don’t need to know.”
╚ ——————————————— ╝
“Darling, is there anything that I can get you?”
Your manager swept a caring hand to hold you by the small of your back.
“No, thank you though, love.” You shone brightly back to him.
“Just let me know? So far we’ve got a queue for you. Four gentlemen and three ladies. I expect that the tips tonight will be generous...it’s payday.”
You politely nodded. “Of course.”
“Have you been having a hard time with any of the new faces?”
You took a sip of your brandy. “Some of them have some mouth, but I’ll make them dignified. You can trust me.”
“I always do.” He gently kissed your cheek. “Ah, I forgot to mention, one of your customers brought you a gift. It’s in your dressing room; he wants you to wear it for your dance tonight.”
“I do love gifts.”
“Go get ready darling, you haven’t got much more time.”
Once you were in your dressing room, a medium sized white box waited for you on your vanity. There was no labels; no indication that it was from a luxurious brand. You opened it, and the shirt was wrapped in light pink tissue paper. It was too short to be a robe, but it was silk and white with buttons that looked more decorative rather than useful. You figured it must have been your customer’s: many of them got off to you wearing their clothes. It wasn’t your usual style, but you knew how to make anything work.
╚ ——————————————— ╝
“And for our last act of the night: the wonderful, the illustrious...”
You walked out to the silent stage: meant only for you, the stage lights yellow, shrouding you in their brilliance. Your chest was bare, save for the silky shirt falling off your shoulders. They were cheering for you, throwing paper bills at you and calling your name, but you couldn’t hear them at all. You had never felt so whole in your life since being on the stage. It seemed like the rest of your days were just spent chasing some kind of feeling that merely resembled that.
Barefoot, you pranced along the stage, twirling like a ballerina even, letting the shirt billow up just so they could see your perky bottom. With all of their eyes on you, you felt like an absolute vision--like an ethereal being, desired, but impossibly attainable.
The jazz song played on by the live players, a muted trumpet and violins accompanied you. Your eyes swept across the blue velvet curtains of the booths, to every man and woman looking at you in awe. You let the shirt slip just a bit farther, revealing your back, winking. You never had to show them much. It was your charisma that they thirsted for--and that they could only get a small taste of.
╚ ——————————————— ╝
“Darlin’ you’re a catch, an absolute catch.” Your manager snuck up behind you taking your makeup off to hand you the ridiculously fat stack of bills. “You keep us afloat baby, you know that I can’t thank you enough.” He bowed.
“Stop flattering me.” You remarked with a smirk. “I know.”
Your manager left, then the curtain to your room screeched again. He slowly stepped into the light, applauding slightly.
“He’s right you know? Even I can’t get enough of you.”
It was him, cocky smile, swept blonde hair and all.
“You again? I’m surprised that you even made it in here at all. Considering who you are.”
“What? The competition? You didn’t tell them about me, did you?”
You patted some serums into your face. “Better leave soon before they rid you of that handsome face of yours.”
“You saying that I’m handsome?” He snarked.
“What are you doing here anyway?”
“Seeing you, I thought I made that clear? Isn’t that what you were doing when you came to my club?”
“Like what you saw?”
“I stand corrected.” He let up, advancing towards you at your vanity. “And you look just as stunning in my shirt as I thought you would.”
“Your...this is yours? How the hell did you mange that?”
“I have my ways.”
“I suppose you want it back then.”
“No...you can keep it...if you promise me one thing.”
“And what would that be?”
He reached out for your hands, which you tentatively took. He swept you up, pulling you into his chest with eyes dipped in lust.
“I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you.” He spoke onto your lips with heated breath.
You would’ve been lying if you had said his lips didn’t look appetizing.
“One more time.”
“Bold of you to assume that I’d want to fuck you again.”
“You haven’t been thinking of it too? My hands on your body...”He caressed your body down, “My lips on yours?” He pulled you in by the chin to carefully part your lips with his. “My dick filling you up?” He pulled you in closer to feel his pulsating dick. “You don’t think about it?”
“What do you want me to say?”
“That you want me. All you have to do is say it and I’m yours.”
“You’re looking to get killed if they know you’ve touched me.”
“I’d happily die for you.”
“I’ll pretend you didn’t say that...Jisung.”
His lips fell to your neck where he pressed slow kisses onto it. “Just say it...”
The cool of his saliva on your skin met the air, tingling. You couldn’t believe you found yourself considering...
“I know you want to...”
“This won’t be a common occurrence.” You got out, suppressing your moans.
“Is that a yes?”
“...yes.”
“And we’ll see about that.” He slyly grinned, meeting your lips once again.
He swept you up, and your legs naturally wrapped around him. He carried you out of the dressing room to the main hall, pulling you both into the nearest booth, drawing the blue velvet curtains behind him. His eyes devoured you, casting aside his silk shirt that loosely clung to you. You threw your weight onto the table, opening your legs for him, inviting him. He chuckled a little at the action.
“I can imagine you must’ve been thinking of this as well then.” He kissed down your stomach, removing what underwear you were barely wearing. He kissed and sucked at the skin in your inner thighs, kindling your excitement. Spit gathered on his tongue, which he let drip down to your sex which glistened for him.
Your core begged for that feeling once again, that feeling only he could give you: the one that made you feel alive, like you weren’t just chasing some impossibility.
He lapped at you slowly with his tongue, awakening your whole body.
“I fucking want you.”

To be honest, I haven’t felt the most comfortable with all the attention on Cap’n lately. It’s one thing to talk about a stanbase in general, but the idea about talking about them here feels like it would just be giving the Stans ammunition to claim they are being victimized. Like, I’ve spent my time talking about internet weirdos with others and I know that’s what happens once it’s discovered and their victim complex kicks in.
But on the other hand, it’s not like we’re not a part of the Fire Emblem fandom. Through our blogs, we do interact with other fans. It’s just a case of us talking about certain bad apples from a different section of our fandom, and in this case the sheer scope of what this individual has done. How they have completely twisted the story and messages of Three Houses, and through their platform has only fueled the toxicity within the community.
This is an individual who claims that people are sexist because they don’t like Edelgard. However, I count myself as an Edelgard fan. She’s one of the best aspects of the game, tying into the stories and themes it presents. I wouldn’t say I like her for who she is, but rather what she is. I wouldn’t say Cap’n likes her either way though. He’s always out there, trying to reframe the events of the game in such a way that Edelgard is the heroine rather than the villain. And a chief part of this is how he changes her character into what she wants him to be.
It really says something to me how much he projects onto her. Rather than the idiot charging ahead without considering the consequences of her actions and instead turning a blind eye when she can rather than deal with reality, someone who has no idea how to actually reform Fodlan and instead has only focused on how to obtain power and wage this war, a social Darwinist, someone who lies to her closest allies while spitting venom at Thales, someone childish but still able to make others dance as her puppets, rather than all of that they turn Edelgard into a mess. Cap’n writes Edelgard, first and foremost, as the victim of everyone trying to manipulate her, including sexually. He doesn’t just try to absolve her of her sins, he tries to claim they weren’t sins at all and instead part of some insane master plan. But at the same time, he’s trying to claim she has no agency in anything, because that would mean she’s responsible in some capacity. He tries to make her seem maternal, opening up to her allies and...
No. Just no. He’s trying to turn Edelgard into his ideal waifu. That, how he keeps trying to add sexual abuse or characters really being lesbians but have internalized homophobia, and how he’s willing to maim Hilda because she doesn’t join Edelgard’s glorious crusade, all of that makes me feel he has some deep seated issues with women. He wants to come across as progressive and all that jazz, but in reality he’s comes across more as a phony. He even admits his fanfic is him being self-indulgent aka he’s writing it for his own gratification.
The second is something a bit more worrying for me. He glorifies violence, saying that the point of Crimson Flower is meant to make us reconsider it’s usage. He wants violence against the system to be good, but at the same time when it’s demonstrated that Edelgard’s system requires violence against the people in order to be maintained, being the most basic idea of the Hadou/Hegemon concept he thinks is so romantic, he thinks it’s cool. He demonizes the people Edelgard commits violence against while at the same time attempting to whitewash her actions, showing a clear sign he’s uncomfortable with what she canonically does, but in this case Cap’n is all for civies being killed by the secret police? Not to mention how he denies the facts of Ferdinand/Lysithea’s paralogue as lying to the player, despite the devs claiming that the game was written to support Silver Snow, because “Edelgard would never conscript her citizens under the threat of being executed. She also let Duke Aegir live, which shows how forgiving she is, so she wouldn’t blame him for things he never did.”
He wants to argue violence is good, yet he does this. He’s made it clear he’s rejecting the reality of what the game is actually trying to say, instead cherry-picking information he likes while ignoring the bigger picture. He’s desperate to maintain that he’s not wrong in supporting her, and that’s something I feel fuels people parroting his takes like they do. They do so because they’re desperate themselves, and don’t want to admit they’ve been played like a fiddle.
The guy legitimately worries me, and I really think the fandom needs to take a good, hard look at what he’s really saying if it has any hope of recovering. That we have to actually see the game for what it is, rather than what people want it to be (though considering some of the complaints against Fates and Echoes, this isn’t a problem exclusive to Three Houses). I feel like a lot of this should have been shut down a long time ago, but at the same time the game left things kinda vague and a lot of symbolism went unnoticed for the longest time. Not to mention how it definitely feels like the Japanese developers had different ideas for what the game was about than the English translation team.
Anyway, I just wanted to get that off my chest. Thanks guys for listening. Cheers.

Hi Annie, hope work is easing up. Would you ever consider writing a coda for HAHH? Or do you have any ideas left? That verse made me actually want to write a fanfic myself because of how good it was & how it stuck in my head for months after. Just love it. Know things are busy so please don't feel obliged, especially since I know you've answered several asks about this verse.
Hello! I wish work would ease up, too, really. 😒
About HAHH I really do feel like at this point I’ve answered as much about that ‘verse as I can (for now, anyway), plus I need to move on to my next Marvel Trumps Hate fic, but since you asked!  And it’s absolutely delightful that that fic inspired you. 😘 So that got me thinking, and here’s a little thing:
Coda to Half Agony, Half Hope, Steve POV (also on ao3)
Sometimes Steve dreams that he came back to an Earth where Tony doesn’t exist.
Not that Tony died while Steve was away, but that he never existed at all. Years of Steve pretending that Tony doesn’t exist has, in dreams, manifested as a reality in and of itself – where in sleep Steve returns and finally opens the eye he’d kept shut for so long, only to find that there’s nothing to see. Tony… isn’t. No one knows him, there’s no evidence he ever was, and whenever Steve tries to describe Tony to someone, the words can’t come.
It’s a nightmare, of course. Steve had them sometimes while he was away, but they tended to be about close calls in battle; never about Tony. When he did dream of Tony, said dreams were pleasant, though the details of them hazy, and Steve normally woke up annoyed and aching for a missing limb.
So it’s funny, really, that Steve only started having nightmares about Tony after he came back to Earth and actually did see him again. In fact, that first nightmare hit the night after he read Tony’s redacted personnel file, with all its colorful details of Stane’s betrayal and the surgeries that saved Tony’s life. The details of that night’s dream are gone, but Steve remembers the feeling of helplessness, and of Tony turned nebulous and out of reach, like smoke between his fingers.
They’re together now, he and Tony.
Back together, though it’s not really a reprise of what they once had. They’re different people now, and though they have a better understanding of who the other person used to be, they now have the wonderful nitty gritty work ahead of them to learn who they are now, and what they can be in the future.
Steve is happy, and thankful beyond words for the second chance. Hence the strangeness of him having recurring dreams of Tony not existing. Once, twice, a third time—
The fourth, he snaps awake from it with a gasp. Tonight his throat feels thick, as though he’d been about to shout something. But whatever it was, it’s immediately forgotten, because Tony is right here with him. Tony, who is possibly most real person Steve will ever know, is halfway under the covers, and is speaking to him.
“Just a dream,” Tony’s saying quietly. One of his hands brushes Steve’s face, and Steve turns into the touch so eagerly that Tony immediately starts petting him. The slow strokes along Steve’s temple and hairline has Steve sighing, and the sound almost drowns out Tony’s murmurs of, “It’s okay, you’re safe.”
Steve is far from fully awake, so it takes him a moment to realize that Tony thinks he must’ve been dreaming of war and violence. He should correct him, but he’s too shaken, too tired, too relieved – so all he can do is cling onto Tony’s wrist in trying to reorient himself to the world where Tony is here, with him.
“There we go.” Tony pulls the covers up to Steve’s shoulders, which is a feat in itself considering that Steve’s clinging onto Tony’s hand. But Tony manages, and makes himself comfortable underneath said covers with Steve, tucking himself close enough that his feet tangle with Steve’s.
A kiss lands on Steve’s cheek, close to where Steve’s lips are still parted around steadying breaths. It feels wonderful at the first, but that’s followed by the sleep-disoriented thought that he shouldn’t be asking for comfort from Tony. It’s wrong, somehow, to demand such things from Tony when Steve’s been… something. He can’t grasp the fine logic of it, but a sense of unfairness – and of justice not yet served – permeates the whole thought.
Steve says none of this out loud, but distress must be visible on his face because Tony makes a sound that’s fond and soft, and amused, maybe? It’s not an unhappy sound, which is the main thing. Steve finds himself calming, and calms even more when Tony tucks his face by Steve’s chin. Tony’s fingers – the set that Steve isn’t clutching to his chest – rub soothing pressure at the back of Steve’s neck.
“Tony.” Steve’s tongue is sleep-thick. “Move in with me? Here?”
“I don’t always sleep late,” Tony replies.
“No, it’s.” Steve tries to open his eyes, but the effort to do so seems insurmountable. “Feels more like home when you’re here.”
In the pause that follows, dismay slowly seeps into Steve’s brain – a remnant of the nightmare, maybe. He’s rarely been able to do things by halves, and that includes bearing the sheer scope of emotion that Tony inspires in him. That’s not always a good thing – he’d asked Tony to marry him before either of them were ready, for example, and there’s a lesson in there that Steve’s still trying to learn. Sometimes courage is in not taking the daring wild leap out ahead, but bearing the smaller steps right in front of you.
But Tony says, “Okay. I’ll move in.” He has that voice, the pleased one he uses whenever he’s tricked something out of Steve. Not that there’s any trickery involved here tonight; just sleep-addled honesty. “We can talk about it in the morning.”
“Thank you.” Steve exhales, and his breath puffs against Tony’s hair, which tickles his chin. “I appreciate that you’re real.”
“Oh, okay,” Tony says with a laugh, “that is going to be some conversation tomorrow.”
