summary: Makkari has been distant ever since the events following the emergence

You feel your heart ache as you look over at Makkari. She’s sat in her favourite chair in the Domo again, rapidly flicking through her favourite book collections. It was the same routine ever since the emergence. Waking up before you, moving to the chair, reading her books and playing with her trinkets, then eventually heading to bed way after you were ready asleep.

Despite living with Makkari for years you suddenly felt as she’d become a stranger. She hardly spent time with you anymore, hardly spoke with you, barely even looked at you. You knew she’d been shaken up by finding out the truth of the Eternals’ existence, you know she probably just needed some time to get to grips with it, to get to grips with herself and who was. But you were reaching a breaking point and you weren’t sure how much more of this you could take.

Makkari looks up from her seat, finding you standing in the doorway.

“What’s wrong?” She signs at you, letting the book rest in her lap.

“I’m surprised you even noticed I was here” you huff.

She looks at you quizzically.

“What do you mean?” She signs again, moving to sit up in her chair and face you properly.

“I mean, it’s been ages since you’ve even really acknowledged my presence. You’ve been holed up in here with all your precious trinkets for weeks, Makkari. I’ve barely seen you let alone spoke to you. I just-” you sigh, trialing off at the end. “Am I not important to you anymore?” You squeak, tears stinging your eyes.

At that Makkari gets up and runs over to you. She puts her hands on your shoulders, giving you a light squeeze until you lift your eyes up to meet hers.

“Of course you’re important to me. You’re the most important thing in my life” she signs at you earnestly.

“It doesn’t feel like it” you feel one tear escape down your cheek. “You’ve been spending so much time in here with all your treasures it just feels like there no time, or place, left for me” you sniff.

Makkari shakes her head, sorrow etched on her face.

“I’m sorry, I'm sorry if I’ve made you feel that way. After finding out the truth of my existence I've been searching for some kind of meaning amongst Earth’s history, like all these artefacts would somehow show me my place in the world, or who I am or who I’m supposed to be” she sighs deeply, taking a deep breath before carrying on. “But I didn’t need to. My place has always been wherever you are. You are my meaning in my life. Who I’m supposed to be is whoever I am when I'm with you” she smiles gently.

When you don’t answer she looks at you earnestly, her eyes desperately seeking yours. You don’t take your eyes off the floor, almost too overwhelmed to look at her, so she gently cups your face in her hands. She wipes away your tears before she lets you go.

“You are and always have been,” she signs, “my greatest treasure.”

Druig first sees her when he starts hitting the gym. It's an early six, he's tired as fuck and he's waiting for his sister in law, Thena and his temporary coach, to arrive. Normally it was Gilgamesh but he was in Fiji ... for what, Druig can't remember.

This woman ... is a goddess, red leggings over powerful thighs, a cropped shirt over toned stomach, earth curls braided down her back, swinging in a steady tempo and he can't help but stare from his perch in the boxing ring – especially when they're the only two in the gym.

Get a life, Ajak would chastise. Well, about that —

She has to be an professional athlete, he decides, because she's currently sprinting an ungodly pace that would've winded him and she – god, he needs to find out her name – makes it look incredibly easy.

He watches her chug down water and she snaps her head into his direction. Druig doesn't look away, unashamed, cheeks and ears feeling hot at her attention and smiles at her. The woman raises an eyebrow and practically glides over to him, a granola bar in hand. He watches her break a piece in half and hand one to him.

Well, how can he say no to free food?

("Thought we could stay in tonight," Druig had told her over scrambled eggs and bacon, arms wrapped around her waist, tucking his chin into her shoulder. "Have a little dinner to ourselves, like. Treat ourselves." A dark eyebrow cocked. "I'll wear that shirt ya like."

Her heart soars, butterflies lining the pit of her stomach. The spatula sets down, nonstick. "Why, Druig, are you asking me out?"

A Cheshire-grin splits his sharp face, the tip of his nose brushing against hers. His breath fans against her face, his hands lifting to sign. She pays no attention, too attuned to him like always, her eyes fixated on him.

"Indeed that I am."

He snickers, his chin jutting out. She follows his eyes and sees she's on the verge of burning the bacon and shoos Druig away with a push, laughing as he saunters to the dining room table.)

Living in the relative quiet of the jungle had eroded Druig's defenses; his villagers knew how to put up their own mental walls, allowing him to relax his more and more as the decades trudged by. It wasn't an intentional move, just the softening of a survival instinct as safety descended and he no longer needed to keep out the screams of battle.

Now he's back in civilisation, however-

Makkari finds him curled in his room on the Domo, hands buried and tugging in his hair like the sharp pain at the roots could distract him from the turmoil of his mind. They're due to leave to search for the other Eternals tomorrow and it isn't a moment too soon; he longs for the empty black silence of space, where the only other minds nearby will be Thena and Makkari who are basically programmed to block him out. He should have been more diligent, kept his walls strong but instead he's become complacent and not patched up the cracks with fresh bricks for years.

"What's wrong?" Makkari signs immediately, dropping to her knees next to him.

He almost laughs, because how can he explain? How can he explain that he can hear the entire population of South Dakota, all talking over each other with their petty human problems? Every thought he hears leads to another, until he's drawn back into every word he's ever heard a person think, loud and obnoxious. They're all blurring together, fears over droughts and crops warring with complaints over the latest tinder date, panic over missing buses colliding with plans for hunting for the upcoming feast.

"I can hear them. All of them." He whimpers pathetically, sees her face soften with understanding through his blurred eyes.

In the early days, before he'd gotten used to the noise the humans made, she'd found him in this state a few times. Eventually, after several sleepless nights fussing and soothing, she'd realised his mind was fracturing and needed something to pull it back into one place, so he could climb out of the pit of other people's thoughts and find his own once again.

"Druig," she signs to him, keeping her actions slow and sweeping so he can follow them around the pounding in his temples. "What was the first thing you said to me?"

The question triggers a new onslaught of thoughts in his mind, other people's memories piling on top of his, shouting over each other to tell him the first thing they said to their beloved, generations of star-crossed lovers trampling over his vague recollections of opening his eyes on the Domo to meet Makkari's around the statue of Arishem.

"I can't remember." He gasps. "I can't-"

"Yes, you can." She signs firmly. "I'll start. You saw me signing to Thena and came over.”

He grasps onto the image, hazy among a million other people’s memories, but slowly becoming sharper, clearer.

“You said-"

"What's the sign for beautiful?" He quotes, the picture she's painting for him cutting through the clamour in his head of first meetings and missed chances.

She smiles reassuringly at him. "You said you thought you might need to know it."

She replaces his hands with her own, trailing cool fingers over his scalp before smoothing over the pounding of his temples. He covers her hands with his, focusing on her touch until the voices ebb away - not gone completely, they're always there, like an itch on his back he can't quite scratch, but more manageable now.

"And I did." He says, unconsciously matching his breathing to hers until its slow and steady and the oxygen chases away his panic. His hand trembles a little, but he still raises it to fan over his face in the sign she showed him thousands of years ago. "Thank you, my beautiful Makkari."

Druig, Thena, and Makkari are joined on the Domo by fellow eternal, Eros, and his companion Pip in their mission to rescue what is left of their family from the wrath of celestial, Arishem the Judge. However, in the absence of Gilgamesh, Thena's bouts of Mahd Wy'ry become increasingly more frequent and difficult for her to control, and in the confines of the Domo with no Ajak to heal them, they must find a way to manage it before the unthinkable happens.
