it's a supernatural delight 🌙
Hexenlied is an original modern fantasy magic academy for witches and witch halflings alike. It is a safe haven for those gifted with extraordinary talents. A place where everyone speaks the same tongue, where library books fly to you the moment you think of them, where protection wards blow up in your face if you try to venture inside the catacombs, Hexenlied fosters a welcoming and eccentric community for witches from all over the globe. But even amidst an eclectic student body and the strict Witch Council, ever-shifting magic can still threaten the delicate balance between the sacred and the mundane. Especially if it falls into the wrong hands.

A Sword Through the Fog
Scene 6: The Knight of Fog
Y 227 2nd Unity,9th of Thermidore
The morning fog was dense and Juhn sat in the pilot's cabin of his auto-carriage seething. "Damned mists," he muttered as he slammed his gloved fists on the steering column. His tank of flummogsten had just been filled and he'd have to drag out the ol' girl. She needed a rest but the weather was forcing his hand. With two hours of prep later, Cinnamon was steadily pulling the non-functioning auto-carriage along. With Gregory guiding the old girl, Juhn sat himself in the back beside his sister and their closest friend in Feygard.
Up on top inside one of the storage chests, sat Dorathi. Hidden from her cousins, she contemplated the mission the WSE had assigned for her. A thud broke her concentration as her head bumped against the side as an auto-carriage wheel ran over a pothole with enough force to knock all of the group's supplies overboard. Dorathi had to hand it to Juhn; he knew how tie a good knot, he and his sister. But what would you expect from veteran adventurers? In all honesty, Dorathi had never been on an adventure herself. Mainly assignments - but they were straight forward. She'd teleport in and out, with no opportunity to explore or experience the many landscapes and cultures. She ruminated on the many assassinations she'd took part in. Mainly novice necromancers or those who worked with them. Sometimes the undead themselves. Dorathi chewed on some seeds. Pumpkin, sunflower, flax, and walnut chunks. It made for good birdseed. Especially when you added bits of stone. She listened closely, waiting for a sign that the carriage was rolling to a stop. Sensing that it was slowing down after what seemed like five minutes, she opened the suitcase and crawled out. They had arrived at the international skyport, off in Baldwin Port, a large city in the northernmost edge of Inthal. Rolling off the back, she clutched the bottom axle, making sure her cloak didn't drag onto the mud. She heard a mix of clicking and laughter.
Abstoanarchuud (Aahb-sto-ahn-R-cood), the occult language of the Palkites. It was especially effective at banishing evil. It was especially loud. Dorathi allowed the clicking and loling inside her head to continue unanswered. Her fellow operatives knew what she was up to; they were planning out their patrol of the airship yard. It was their job to make sure none of the Vashtnal cult operatives were able to get near or at least harm any of the three elven adventurers headed to Brightspire. Wöd had done his part to make sure that Raina had gotten to Aquilheim. It was Dorathi's job to make sure they got to Brightspire and through Brightspire. All without garnering the attention of the two cults that had sprouted there. She had made sure Raina got the owl, but it wouldn't be enough protection until they got to Eirstead. Added to the threat that the cults in Brightspire were the Adrubbahkites and their spy network. It was annoying and effective enough to keep up with Lialka's movements without her noticing. What had their attention wasn't her potential to thwart the Q'dauruhk, but her connection to Dreyus, a man they wished to manipulate. A man Dorathi feared they knew how to control. A man Dorathi knew only thought about control. An actual five minutes passed, and finally the auto-carriage door opened. Juhn's boots were the first to hit the ground. Lialka's came next followed by a more gentle landing from Raina. He must have lifted her off of the carriage. Juhn, you make it so obvious, she thought to herself. Tsk, tsk, at this rate you might as well assume the position. Dorathi waited a good two minutes as she watched the three walk off. When she was certain they were too far to reasonably hear, she started clicking and cackling...'Eagles gone nest,' Dorathi clicked and hahed. 'Ok. I go stalk them now.' Wöd. 'Lialka knows I'm here. But she not go tell. She seek hard.' 'Ok. Hide hard then. I ask thing.' 'Ask thing.' 'Why Lialka not know more.' 'Plan not work if she know.' 'Ok.' Dorathi crawled back up to the back of the carriage before climbing down. She waited before the baggage handler arrived. It was Gusc, a gnome.
"Dorathi."
"Mr. Areh. If you could hand me my suitcase."
"Of course, milady," Gusc replied. He clapped his hands as two robed figures jumped out from the shadows.
"Get Ms. Einthael her equipment for this assignment." The two men nodded as they grabbed the suitcase Dorathi had hidden herself in. Bringing it to her, they waved their hands over it. Dorathi opened the chest and pulled out a crossbow.
Alongside it were cold-iron bolts.
"Good against Arnd'thuul. But be wise with them. The only known Cold-iron deposits exist on the continent of Chianglong. In a land known as Hylsphan." Dorathi nodded. She equipped her items, taking two canisters sitting in the chest as well.
"For taking on large groups of opponents. We'll make sure to drop you some more every 2 months. Use them wisely. They can't be made where you're going."
"Understood," Dorathi replied. She strapped the cobalt grenades onto her belt. And walked off.
Have yourself a good shift," she told Gusc as she calmly walked towards The Crossheart. She climbed up the side and undid a panel, crawling inside before sealing herself inside and redoing the insulation.

Girl by Moonlight
Girl by Moonlight is a multi-genre tabletop game about being magical girls, or mech pilots, or dream travelers. Girl by Moonlight is about transformations, feelings, and queerness, but it's primarily about magical girls, doomed, or hopeful. It's gameplay is fairly basic FITD stuff if you're familiar with it, but it's still very fun. Check it out if you need a game where magical girlisms are an allegory for queerness

I'm trying to figure out why, specifically, the game shop I went to in my middle/high school years' used TTRPG books section (pile of boxes under everything else, basically, that I sorted in 4 hours for $10 in store credit and a free book) was nearly 2/3s by title and half by weight, old Palladium sourcebooks, as I know nothing about the system in question and thought you might be able to shed some light.
Bear in mind this was ~2009-2016, if that helps.
Okay so I don't know for certain why there were so many used RIFTS books, and I have never actually played RIFTS, so a lot of this is going to be me relaying information I've picked up via reading.
RIFTS is a multi-genre RPG set in our world but post-apocalyptic. It wasn't the first multi-genre RPG, but to my knowledge it is and still remains the most multi-genre RPG. Like, it's a real everything and the kitchen sink post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting but also magic is real.
What I know about RIFTS is that the system is at best okay, but at worst doesn't seem to agree with itself and changes its mind about how specific rules work from one supplement to the next. The lead designer, Kevin Siembieda, is very protective of his IP to the point of sending fans cease and desist letters for making fan sites, but based on what I remember he's also been so protective of his setting staying true to his vision that he's pretty much just thrown out work done by freelancers for supplements and written over it later.
Anyway, it's the type of game where you can find Glitter Boys (mech pilots so named because of their special mechs with, like, some type of glittery armor?), Juicers (drug-fueled supersoldiers who have a limited lifespan after character creation), and other such nonsense. Apparently one of the best ways to increase your Strength is to train the Boxing skill. It sounds weird and I kinda wanna try it some day.
(A lot of the above is half-remembered and based on having listened to a lot of the System Mastery podcast back in the day! I recommend their episodes on RIFTS if you want to know more! Jeff and Jon are funny guys.)

I do not care about The Game Awards since they focus on AAA games, and I mostly play indie games and rarely play new AAA games any more for multiple reasons.
Cassette Beasts is the Game of the Year of 2023 to me. There are other indie games came out this year that I love, but Cassette Beasts offers such a refreshing take on monster collecting RPGs, a genre that is thoroughly dominated by a multi-billion dollar franchise (Pokémon), that it deserves more attention.
We need to support indie monster collecting games as much as we could, especially great ones like Cassette Beasts, to combat the stigma of such games being dismissed as "Pokémon clones" by the general gaming audience regardless of how similar or different those titles are to Pokémon.

Any RPG system recommendations for people who like the character creation of GURPS but want something a little less clunky to actually play? Genre wise something that can do space opera or high fantasy would be of interest.
It depends on what you like about the character creation of GURPS. Anything that has as many mechanically relevant bits and bobs in its character creation process as GURPS does is necessarily going to be quite fiddly to play, especially if it's à la carte point-buy, so those priorities are pulling against each other a bit.
If it's the baroque, multi-layered complexity of GURPS-style chargen that you're after, and don't mind if the end result of that process has a bit less game-mechanical greeble, you might have a look at Sarah Newton's Mindjammer. The character creation process is tightly wedded to a particular transhuman space opera milieu – in brief, picture Iain M Banks' Culturre circa Consider Phlebas in a cold war with Warhammer 40000's Imperium of Man – but offers a great deal of flexibility within that remit, accommodating characters ranging from baseline humans to sapient starships.
If it's point-buy character creation specifically that you want, you're going to have to go further afield; GURPS' gameplay is pretty baseline for RPGs of the type, and most of the exceptions are oriented toward playing as superheroes and/or anime characters, which cuts against your genre preferences. Wild Talents may be worth a look; it's part of the aforementioned superhero-oriented strand, though it's easier to reskin for fantasy or space opera than most, as long as you don't mind playing relatively high-powered characters.

if you have the time, what are your favorite ttrpgs? I'm interested in getting into the genre but dnd is kind of hard to break into. Again, you don't have to answer if this would take too much time to explain. Thank you!
So I’ve played about 35 different games, mostly one shots. I’ve had the benefit of playing with people I trust which can greatly influence game play. Below I’m going to include the full list of games with brief descriptions, but favorites first.
I definitely prefer non-traditional, narrative, and gmless games, so that will be a running theme.
Tales From the Loop has to go first because it’s the game that made me fall in love with ttrpgs. This game has Stranger Things vibes. You play a preteen in the 80s in a town where weird shit is constantly happening. This game is more on the traditional side. There’s a GM running the story, you roll for skill checks, there’s probably a specific story playing out that your gm will try to hook you on to. This game uses only 6 sided dice. There is a sequel listed below for teens in the 90s.
Tumblr media
Fall of Magic is a narrative rpg with at most 3 dice rolls in the entire game. FoM is played on a beautiful, handmade map. Your characters progress through the cities on the map as you collaboratively tell the story of your journey to the birthplace of magic. Every city on the map has locations in it with a narrative prompt. Each player decides what location to visit and acts a scene at the location answering the prompt. Anything you say becomes true. There are no rolls. Nothing makes me want to write an epic fantasy more than a good game of Fall of Magic
Tumblr media
Pasión De Las Pasiones is a PBTA game, which is one of my favorite systems. In it you play a character from a long-running telenovela. I suggest only playing with a gm familiar with the genre who can do justice to the setting. There’s lots of scandal and intrigue. In fact one of the possible characters to play is the secret evil twin of any of your fellow players. PBTA gamesone are closer to traditional with dice rolls and a gm, but emphasizes the narrative more. Rolls are based on you committing to certain tropes and are boosted by narratives rather than any sort of character skills. (I also suggest checking out other PBTA games.)
Tumblr media
A Quiet Year is a map drawing game. All you need to play are a deck of cards, a printout of what the cards mean, and drawing materials. You tell the story of a community rebuilding after a harsh winter, answering prompts from the cards for each week of the year. As you build the village and create the story, you draw a map to show all you have done. No artistic skill is necessary. You do not play a character in this game. There is no gm. There are no dice rolls. This is the map from my last game. (I prefer to use wrapping paper for more space)
Tumblr media
Dialect is a language building game in which you collaboratively make up new words that become completely normal to you through play. You play as members of an isolated community of any sort (lost mars colonies, online message boards, a thieves guild) which breaks down over the course of the game. You play out the evolution and eventual dissolution of your joint language. Each turn comes with a prompt for which you create a word and then play a scene. This is great as a stand-alone but I love the idea of using it as worldbuilding for a larger campaign.
Tumblr media
I will hopefully do another post talking more about someone games tomorrow
(Warning for q slur used once below cut)
This is a list of all the games I’ve played with a short description for each. I do not recommend all of these, but feel free to ask more about any of them. I’ll talk more about some of these in future posts.
Masks (teenage super heroes. PBTA)
Paranoia (dystopian bureaucratic comedy horror)
Weave (app based multi genre. Left very little impression for me)
Tales from the loop (80s teenage horror mystery. D6 based game)
Things from the flood (90s teenage horror mystery. Sequel to above)
Descent into Midnight (map drawing game. psychic underwater entities in a community fighting an influence. PBTA.)
Dream askew (queer enclave as society falls PBTA. Book also contains a jewish companion game set in a shtetl, Dream Apart)
Rippers (dark Victorian. supernatural hunters)
Pasion de las Pasiones (telenovela the rpg. NDNM)
Fall of magic (map based, gmless, story telling game. High fantasy. I own but have not yet played their second scroll game City of Winter)
-
Fiasco (multi genre heist-gone-wrong game. Gmless. D6 based)
Inspecteres (ghostbusters-esque, bureaucratic comedy. Some mockumentary elements.)
Dnd (we all know this one)
Quiet year (map drawing, gmless game on the growth of community)
Dialect (linguistics based game telling the story of a collapse of community)
Microscope (world-building game played over the course of an era. Great for works building for a larger campaign)
Lady blackbird (single scenario game- helping a noble escape arranged marriage. Steampunk)
Lasers and feelings (Star Trek, basically. One pager. Great for new players and gms. Good system to build a home brew based on)
Castle falkenstein (steampunk+fantasy adventure)
Headspace (cyberpunk, anticorp. Emotionally intense/triggering)
-
Mouse guard (mouse fantasy adventures)
Numenara (science fantasy adventure game. Earth based, 1000 years off)
Manifest (sci-fi western)
Damn the man save the music (employees try to save their dying indie record store and achieve their personal goals. 90s)
Ryutaama (npcs travel and experience the joy of existence)
Dead Halt (a hotels AI has gone rogue. You work there. Try to survive. Horror-ish but in a campy way)
Knave (a very simplified fantasy adventure game)
Thirteenth Age (similar to dnd with a few unique interesting features. Made by creators of dnd 3&4)
Anomaly (tarot based gmless game about a sinister organization investigating supernatural anomalies)
Visigoths vs. Mall goths (conflicts and romance between the warriors who sacked Ancient Rome and 20th century spooky teens. Takes place in a mall in 1996)
-
Arcana Academy (magic school game. Don’t play with strangers because they will fall into HP tropes)
Alice is Missing (silent game played over discord or similar. A mystery is solved through texts and group chats
Worlds Without Numbers (large world fantasy adventure game. OSR. Similar in concept to dnd but with plenty of differences. More human centric)
Nahual (Mestizo shapeshifting angel hunting underdogs)
Sign (sign language building game. Deaf children develop their language collaboratively in a new school setting. Played silently.)

Gods need a chance to play too.
This is the concept that drives the existence of Revenant. Created by a group of deities and Eldritch beings who wanted a place to play together. Like children with a dollhouse they built themselves a world for all their favorite toys, and now these deitous beings pluck their favorite individuals from the vast number of worlds out of those worlds in which they were created to come live in Revenant. Placed by Gods themselves there is no way out of Revenant for those chosen to reside here, though of course that doesn't mean some won't search.

Howdy!
I have a friend that really wants to get into other games that aren't just mostly combat like pathfinder and dnd but they're a shitpost kinda player so they aren't fond of horror or angsty games.
Do you have any good suggestions for more light-hearted/comedic rpgs? They like Risus if that helps, just it's a bit too light for me to run it.
Sorry if this is a lot.
THEME: Shitpost Games
My friend, this is not a lot, there are plenty of great shitpost-style games out there of all kinds of genres! Let’s see what I’ve got that might be up their alley.
When it comes to the “lightness” of Risus, I’m not sure if you mean that there aren’t enough rules or if there’s not enough setting. These recommendations will have much more specific settings, although shitpost games tend to be pretty light on rules all-round, so hopefully there are some rules systems here that still appeal to you!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pride and Extreme Prejudice, by Grant Howitt.
A hand-created one-page RPG about proper ladies of a marriageable age and their giant robots powered by a malign eldritch intelligence. Will you find a suitable husband? Will you repel the French invaders? Will your eternity reactor leak and drive you and your sisters irrevocably mad, haunted my whispers from the dark between the stars?  And - will you be late for the ball on Thursday eve?
Combining Regency styles of flirting with giant multi-pilot mechs is a game that I didn’t know I wanted until I found it. It involves 4 players and a GM, with each character embodying one of four young women, all looking for a husband while also fighting off giant French clockwork dragoons.
Each situation will be a combination of a social outing and a military action taken by the opposition. Each turn, your players will have to figure out how to pursue true love while also redirecting power, how to unleash hell with a shot cannon while also coming across as cool, calm and collected, and how to charm someone with your earnest opinions while also charging an enemy before they can shoot the gentleman you’re flirting with.
I think the only thing more hilarious than playing this game, is playing this game absolutely 100% seriously. Go ham.
Never Send A Barber to do an Assassin’s Job, by Silver Hoof Games.
You are a professional. You are a…  Confectioner, Architect, Fisherman, Gravedigger, Barber or Actor. But you couldn't find proper employment for yourself! You had no other choice, or perhaps by mistake, you became none other than an assassin.
You would need some d6, friends and no DM!
As a GM-less game, this might be a great way for the person who usually runs the show to get in on the action with everyone else. Using only d6s, you’ll find ways to use your confectioner’s bag of sugar or your barber’s strong perfume to play as assassin’s who are just trying to pay the bills. Something about using a round peg to fill a square hole - right now it’s just a page with rules, but the designer is hoping to use whatever funds they raise with it to turn it into something more complete.
OSHA Violations: The Game, by Alex Kingsley.
Regulations are in place to keep workers safe. But c’mon, in this economy? The goal of the game is simple: commit as many OSHA violations as possible without getting caught. The player with most OSHA Violations at the end wins-- unless they get shut down by the Safety Inspector!
This game selects one person to play the role of Safety Inspector, while the rest of the group will present themself as Site Managers. The Safety inspector will create a tragic backstory, a dirty secret, and their favourite OSHA violation. The Site Managers will design their construction sites and roll a d6 to determine how many OSHA violations they MUST have on site (although they may have more). What specific violations those are will be determined by a roll table.
This game heavily relies on improv, but there’s a win condition: the Inspector must guess who has the most violations. If they guess correctly, the player with the second-most violations is the winner - if they do not guess correctly, the player with the most violations wins the game!
Games I’ve Recommended in the Past
My Silly Games Post.
My TragicComic Games Post.
Something is Wrong with the Chickens, by Elliot Davis.
Clown Helsing, by Planarian.
Untitled Ghost Game, by Alice V.
Everyone is John, by Gamer Nation Studios.

Okay, serious question professional critics have been and will be debating for decades to come, but I'm sure you know better than them: Are games art? This is not question of quality-most art in all forms sucks-the argument how we define art and its purpose, function. Some argue games themselves aren't, but may contain art within them. That in a narrative driven game, the story may be art, but that's seperate from the game itself. Would a puzzle count as art? Would Solitaire? A slot machine?
I keep trying to answer this question and then I keep putting it off cause I want to get it perfect and then it inevitably gets lost and I never respond so lets just go for it. Yes, Videos games are art, if we can identify any medium as art. The only arguments I can see that would deny video games as an art form would also dismiss Film as an art form. Now there are many differnet ways that a Video Game can be art, its a very multi facaded medium, but a few include
Story, the obvious one. Disco Elysium, Planescape Torment, the Baldur's Gate Series, Fallout New Vegas, the Witcher Series, Dragon Age, I have no Mouth and I must Scream, Legacy of Kaine, Undertale, God of War, are all good examples of this. (I like RPGS)
Mixing Mechanics and Story- Portal, Silent Hill 2, Bioshock, Deux Ex, Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2, Walking Dead, all of these are examples of narrative and story being mered on a fundemental level. The Soulsbourn Games by fromsoft do a really good job of illustrating some very buddhist themes in there mechanics.
Pushing the medium forward. Resident Evil 4 is a fucking stupid game but its incredible genre invovations and the fact its fun as fuck pushed the entire medium forward. Same with Dead Space, Half Life (which is also you now..good), Monkey Island,
Mechanics as a way of viewing systems, or to have a vibe. Mechanics can be used to make you understand the world different from a system level, Paper's Please is a great example of this, a lot of Civlization Games or TTRPGS do this, Far Cry tries to do this. Resident Evil 2 Remake really does capture a sort of panic which is very impressive, Princeo of Persia, the original Thief Games, Sympathy of the Night
Video games as expression. This Dragon Cancer, No More Heroes, Braid, Even Postal, an uttelry vile game does express a certain Alt Right attitude (fuck garbage)
Video games as system design, just the brilliance of seeing a bunch of systems override together.
Mood Pieces. The Zelda games are masters of this, but also Shadow of the Collosius,
Purely mechanical Design. Doom is a great example of this, but Missile Command, even tetris has a lot of soviet aethetics in there
I think a puzzle counts as art, or has the potential to count as art, if it can change the way your mind thinks. A good puzzle doesn't just have you solve it, your brain twists around in order to change the way you view things. Like Braid requires you to like...unstuck your brain to understand the puzzles, its incredible
SO yes, games are art....but not all games are good art

Hello there! As I said the last time, I’m working on a new game. And a demo is coming!
The Ash Black Cat and the Happy Ogre (Demo)
Italian version: 31th October (I hope).
English:  November 2022
Felix hates his birthday. In fact, the opposite also seems to be true: every year, on this date, the boy is haunted by bad luck. After a lifetime of trying to convince himself that he is not cursed, on his 18th birthday, he and his best friend Noelia remain locked inside the school. The situation soon turns out to be more ... problematic than expected. At this point, some doubts about his bad luck seem legitimate. Felix thinks he's cursed. Is this the truth? Or maybe this "unfortunate" situation will also turn out to be a good opportunity? On the other hand, fortune favours the bold. This is a story based on Italian and Latin myths, folklore and fairy-tale figures. Accompany Felix and Noelia on their little nocturnal adventure in a very safe and certainly not close to collapse Italian high school. Let them get lost, seek their answers and get out (maybe).
The Ash Black Cat and the Happy Ogre - Fortuna Favet Fortibus - is a game in development on RPG Maker VX Ace. In this game, you'll move Felix and Noelia as they search for a way out - or maybe something else. Plot and characters are the main focus, so you can expect a lot of cutscenes. The game is light horror with darker scenes from time to time. Also, dark humor (, because I need to exorcise nightmares about high school). In gameplay the focus is on exploration, choices and puzzles from time to time; there will be different kinds of small challenges. There are rare hidden game overs and the game is multi-ending, so saving often is recommended.
Features (some are planned for the full release):
🎂 Original artworks. 🎂 A fantastic and very safe building that could probably kill you, namely a classic Italian school. . 🎂 A story based on Italian / Latin folklore, legends and fairy tales. 🎂 Atmospheric sound design, with sound effects made expressly for the game. 🎂 Mack-style sprite 🎂 Post game scenarios. 🎂 Cats. In multiple senses. 🎂 Multi Endings: true, normal, extra ending and two mirror bad ends. Choices matter. the story will be clear and complete in each ending, however different choices will lead to unlocking different cutscenes and dialogues. All the endings will tell you a little more about the characters, the story and the setting.
DEMO ONLY:
* Genre: Adventure, light horror, vague dark humor, hints of romance * Estimated playtime: 30/40 minutes * Warnings: Swearwords (just a little bit).
* Some things in the demo will be expanded later. The title screen and title theme, for example, are not definitive. The demo is meant to introduce story, characters and the type of gameplay. Stay tuned!

One of a Kind Vamp Chapter 1: Multi-fandom Madness
Summary: A Rainy day at White Chapel is perfect for a lazy day of watching TV and indulging in hobbies with a good friend. Or Dakota wants to know what other interests Rory has other than Sci-fi.
(I know nothing about Star Wars and Star Trek so that's why this chapter doesn't follow the full prompt.)
“Hey, Rory, what are you into?”
Rory’s focus on the TV was shattered as he turned his attention to his best friend, Dakota Natalie. It was a mundane afternoon, a calming rainy day where Rory didn’t feel like leaving the house; not even Benny or Ethan felt like leaving the comfort of their warm beds. deciding today was a perfect lazy Saturday, and for once, Rory agreed peace and quiet was a rarity in Whitechapel. It was insane that the supernatural was living under their noses this entire time, and now that they got a taste of it, it seems it’s became unable to leave them alone—not that he minded. Becoming a vampire was one of the best things that has ever happened to him; however, that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten what it’s like to be normal like today.
Watching TV mindlessly: Check.
Popcorn and other snacks nearby: Check.
A best friend by his side who loves him more than anything: Check.
Dakota recently moved into town a few weeks ago and has become glued to Rory’s side since day one. He was very well aware of the younger girl’s crush on him, and if he was being honest with himself, he was thrilled to finally capture a girl’s heart with his irresistible personality, even if there was a ton the two didn’t know about each other yet.
“Sorry, I didn’t hear you. What did you say?”
Dakota, who was lying upside down, righted herself and looked at him. “I asked, What are you into?”
“Oh, that’s easy. I’m a huge Star Trek fan, though Star Wars is pretty cool too.”
“Well, that I know, you and Benny debate about it all the time; I rarely hear you talk about anything else. Surely you have other things you’re into.”
Rory smiled; he knew Dakota wasn’t a sci-fi fan or a Marvel or DC Comics fan. (To be fair, she always gave the blond Magical Girl vibes. He had to ask if she’s a fan of that genre.) But the fact she was interested in knowing what he was into made him grin ear to ear. It felt amazing having a friend who generally cared about his interests, even if she didn’t hold the same opinion.
Sure, Ethan and Benny did care; they’re best friends for a reason; however, they’ve known each other for so long that they know the ins and outs about their hobbies, favorite games, favorite shows, and even music tastes. So, it was nice to indulge in his latest obsessions with someone new, plus he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t interested in the things that caught Dakota’s eye.
“Well, you already know some of my top picks. I love sci-fi, superheroes, comic books, and video games. What else do you want to know?”
“What type of video games are you into? Shoot ‘em ups, RPG’s, racing games?”
“All of the above, really.” Rory replied, “Depends on the theme and controls, and I guess an engaging story helps too. But I’m normally cool with anything that catches my eye. What about you?”
“Well, as you know, I am a huge Kingdom Hearts fan, but I also love the classics like Mario, Kirby, and Pokémon. I never really got into Zelda and don’t like shoot-em-ups. However, I guess I’m like you; I like whatever catches my eye, regardless of genre.”
“What about TV shows? Have you ever engaged in any fandoms?” Rory wondered,
Dakota shook her head. “I lurk around at times and have dabbled in the fanfiction side of things, but I’ve never actively engaged in conversation over it. In fact, I tend to stay away from shows that have toxic fanbases. It ruins the show to the point where I can’t even touch it. As for the types of shows I like, it depends, but I prefer comedies. I hate crying in front of people, so I tend to stay away from anything that might be sad. The same goes for movies.”
“I feel you on the toxic fanbase thing; I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gotten into arguments online over the stupidest things. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t chat on those sites anymore.”
“What about fanfiction?”
Rory tilted his head side to side, “Sort of, I wrote a few self-insert fic’s when I was younger, but I’ve never posted anything. You should see my old stuff; it’s pretty cringe I don’t think I have the skills to write anything better. Plus, all my energy is focused on school right now.” The teenage vampire looked around to make sure his mother wasn’t in earshot and leaned close to whisper, “Not to mention keeping my vampire ninja identity a secret.”
Dakota burst out laughing. She knew how much Rory loved his new quote on quote superpowers; it was fun seeing all the creative ways he could take advantage of them. Not to mention, extremely adorable.
“Hey, do you know what cosplay is?” Rory questioned, forcing Dakota to calm her laughing fit.
“Yeah, I think I’ve heard of it; it’s like dress up but more detailed and expensive; do you do it?”
“No,” he stated simply, “I wish, but money for the material is way too expensive. Plus, with the DIY aspect of it, I could never I can’t even sew.”
“Emily or Cindy could help you with that. Emily’s really good at making clothes, and Cindy’s been known to dabble with it too; she’s great at the finer details, like smaller stitches.”
“Doesn’t Emily hate me?”
“She doesn’t hate you; she just hates the fact I have a crush on you."
“That doesn’t really help, but good to know.”
“Sorry.” She smiled sheepishly.
“Don’t worry about it; hey want to head up to my room and rock out to some music?”
“Sure! Whatchu got?” Dakota sang with a wink,
“Have you heard of the band Single Tear? They’re a heavy metal band I’m super into.”
Dakota grimaced, “Oh, I know them. Emily accidentally blasted one of their songs at three a.m. She was editing her vlog when the headphone wire fell out of the jack. Scared the living daylight out of us. Can’t say I’m a fan.”
And Rory couldn’t blame her in the slightest. “Yeah, their stuff isn’t for everyone. Do you have an artist in mind? I mean, aside from Alvin and the Chipmunks, which I’ll totally listen to if it means I can see more of your dance routines.”
Dakota blushed, feeling touched that Rory was becoming their biggest fan, but there was a different band she had in mind. “There is one band I wouldn’t mind listening to. You ever heard of the band Gorillaz? Emily and I stumbled upon them a while ago, and I’m obsessed. I cannot stop listening to them; they’re so good, man!”
Rory’s eyes lit up. How could he not know them? they were a favorite of his too. “Yeah, I know them; I didn’t think you’d be into that style of music.”
“Honestly, I didn’t either. But they’re so addictive, I can’t stop drumming on my knees whenever I listen to them.”
“Well, what are we doing sitting around here for? Ready to rock?” Rory asked, holding his hand out,
“Am I?! I’m ready to rock roll and lose control, my beloved.” She grinned, taking Rory’s hand, and he led her upstairs.
Sure, the two had different interests and may not have had the most in common, but Dakota never judged him for his geeky hobbies or brushed them off as weird or a waste of time. And for that, Rory was grateful to have such a chill and easy-going bestie.
Not to mention, knowing him better gives Dakota more reasons to add to her ever-growing list as to why she loves him.
