Odessa woke to the soft glow of morning light filtering through the delicate curtains of her room. At twenty years old, she had blossomed into a woman of striking beauty. Her silver hair cascaded like a waterfall, shimmering with an ethereal glow, and her amethyst eyes held a depth that spoke of both mystery and resilience. The curve of her features, delicate yet determined, painted a portrait of grace that belied the scars of her past.

The room that surrounded her was a sanctuary bathed in muted hues. Soft lavender walls embraced her with a sense of calm, and a simple wooden dresser held trinkets and mementos that whispered tales of a life lived in the shadows. The bed, adorned with lavender and silver linens, cradled her like a cocoon, a refuge from both the physical and emotional storms that had shaped her journey.

Odessa's hand reached for a leather-bound journal on the bedside table. As she opened its pages, the scent of aged paper and ink filled the air. The blank canvas before her awaited the ink that would weave the tapestry of her thoughts and dreams.

Her pen moved with a fluid grace, capturing the remnants of a dream that lingered in the recesses of her mind like gossamer threads. The foggy images of Sylara's battle against Malachar danced before her, elusive and fragmentary. She could recall the ethereal glow of flames in Sylara's hair, the clash of magical forces, and the haunting laughter that reverberated through the battlefield. The details, however, remained just beyond the reach of her conscious understanding.

It's been thirteen years since my clan sent me to Umbral Haven, she thought as her pen danced across the pages. Thirteen years since Tristan stole my True Kitsune Blood. Was it a lie? Was it truth? I still can't be certain.

Odessa's thoughts meandered through the labyrinth of uncertainty. The journal became a vessel for her introspection, a mirror reflecting the complex tapestry of her existence.

Umbral Haven, she mused, the name heavy with both sanctuary and exile. A place where shadows converge, and secrets are woven into the fabric of our destinies. But what about the truth that eludes me? Tristan, the mysterious figure from my dream, the theft of my Kitsune Blood... Was it all a prelude to something greater?

The pen lingered on the page, a pause in the narrative of ink and introspection. Odessa's amethyst eyes, filled with a quiet determination, gazed into the distance as if seeking answers in the ethereal realms beyond her grasp.

As she closed the leather-bound tome, the gentle creak of the door heralded the entrance of Elara, her chief maid. Her chestnut hair cascaded in elegant waves, and her eyes, a warm hazel, held an intuitive understanding that transcended the boundaries of servant and mistress.

As they conversed, Elara effortlessly transitioned into her role as a companion, blissfully unaware of the dreams that had woven themselves into Odessa's night. Together, they embarked on the ritual of preparing for the day.

Elara, with practiced ease, assisted Odessa in removing the vestiges of sleep and dreams. The water, warmed to perfection, cascaded over Odessa's silver hair, tracing rivulets down her skin.

Odessa took a deep breath, regaining her composure. "No need to worry. The Crown Prince's visit requires our attention. We must ensure everything is prepared for his arrival."

Elara, sensing the unspoken complexity, nodded. "Of course, Lady Odessa. We shall attend to the necessary arrangements."

Odessa, with a resolve that betrayed the lingering tenderness in her eyes, declared, "But first, I need to delve deeper. I need to understand if the contents of this notice are the sole reasons for the Crown Prince's visit. There might be more to this than meets the eye."

With her words lingering in the air, Odessa turned her attention to the twins. "Soren, Elowen, go get ready. We have preparations to oversee."

The twins nodded in unison, a synchronous acknowledgment of their duties. As they exited the room to attend to their tasks, Odessa turned to Elara, her trusted confidante.

"Elara," Odessa began, her voice steady yet carrying an undercurrent of concern, "there might be more at play here. I need you to keep a close eye on Soren and Elowen. If anything seems amiss during the Crown Prince's visit, ensure their safety above all else."

Elara, ever loyal, nodded in understanding. "I'll do my best, Lady Odessa. They'll be well-protected."

"Good," Odessa replied, her gaze unwavering. "And, Elara, I need you to understand something more. Something I've kept from the Nightshade Clan."

Elara's hazel eyes widened slightly, a subtle sign of surprise. "What is it, Lady Odessa?"

"I've legally taken the twins in as my own," Odessa confessed, her tone measured. "The Nightshade Clan, my family, is not aware of this. I need to ensure they remain safe, especially if the Crown Prince's visit involves more than what's written in that notice."

Elara absorbed the revelation, her features maintaining the composed demeanor that befitted her role. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep them safe, Lady Odessa." As Odessa prepared to embark on her reconnaissance mission, an emotionless veil seemed to descend upon her. The tenderness that had lingered in her eyes moments ago was replaced by a cold determination. It was as if she had drawn upon the shadows that veiled Umbral Haven, embracing the stoicism required for the challenges that lay ahead.

OUaT: Finding Fate

((For the 2020 Rumbelle Secret Santa, using @dorkone's prompt "castle flirting vs. storybrooke flirting”. Hope you like it!))

Regina racks up enemies like it’s the latest fashion. At least she doesn’t task Rumpelstiltskin with conjuring her wardrobe as well as resolving her current vendetta. Someday he’ll enjoy making her understand that she was never more than a means to an end for him. Until then, he sits at his wheel and ponders how to make things difficult for a certain mermaid.

He nearly jumps off his stool when the doors to the hall fly open and a voice that has no business sounding so cheerful within the gloom of the Dark Castle rings out, “I did it!” Belle strides straight for him, a broad smile on her face and a silver platter balanced on her palm. “I knew I’d get it eventually. I wasn’t sifting the flour enough. Thank the gods I figured it out- this batch is the last of the almond stuff!”

As she circles around to stand at his side Rumpelstiltskin catches the scent of something baked and… minty? He stops the wheel and inquires, “What strange act have you committed in the kitchens now?”

Belle rolls her eyes at him, “If you wanted a cook you should’ve dealt for one. But you got me, and I’ve just made a breakthrough in my culinary practice. Here, try one.”

The platter swings toward him, revealing a number of bite-sized macarons tinted an alarming green shade. The smell isn’t actually bad, now that he’s a had a minute to get used to it, but he curls a lip anyway. “No thank you, dearie. I have no need for… whatever this is.”

“‘Whatever this is’ is a delicacy from my village. We made them every midwinter. I thought I’d never get to have them again, but with a little experimentation and perseverance, you can hardly even taste the difference!”

Rumpelstiltskin blinks up at her, then returns his attention to the wheel. “Right, well, congratulations then.”

Belle lets out a soft snort of indignation before saying, “Won’t you try one? Here, I’ll go first.” She picks up one of her creations and pops the whole thing in her mouth. The instant her pink lips close on it her eyes slip shut and she moans in pleasure.

Rumpelstiltskin locks his gaze on the wood grain of his wheel, the only thing that might save him from the in all ways unwelcome heat rushing through his body. This is made more difficult when something green bobs into the lower right corner of his vision.

“O-pen u-up…” Belle sing-songs as he resists the urge to lean into the fresh, bright scent of the treat. When did I summon mint oil to the cupboard? “You know food tastes better when it’s shared, just try one.”

In this second, he snatches for his seer’s sight in hopes of some guidance, receiving silence in response. His own imagination offers the possibility of slapping her hand away- perhaps throw her totally off balance and send the lovely tray of treats clattering to the floor. The thought of the cold glare she would cast on his back sends a chill through him. Perhaps not. So, he could go the other way. Do as told, and open up, let her set the macaron on his tongue. He could even close his lips quickly enough to catch her fingertips, and taste her skin along with the delicate crunch and zing of mint.

Rumpelstiltskin shakes his head to clear these imaginings- one far too cold, the other far too hot. Belle’s hand retreats. “All right, never mind then,” she begins, but he reaches out and cups his palm under hers, taking the macaron with his other hand and bringing it to his mouth.

He grinds through it with brisk efficiency. “A triumph, dearie,” he announces after swallowing, “Well done.”

She smiles, nods. “Thank you. It’s good to know I can feed you something. I don’t care what you say about being sustained by magic, it’s just not healthy to not eat.”

The briefest accidental glance in Belle’s direction reveals a look of warm concern beaming down on him and in that instant a thick, heavy sob swells up in Rumpelstiltskin’s chest, tightens his throat, and makes his eyes burn. She’s right. He lets the magic feed him, and it feeds on him in turn. Sometimes he must call up a gallery of memories of Bae in order to keep the darkness from consuming him. Once or twice, he’s had trouble recalling the exact shape of his son’s face, which causes frigid fear to blast through him.

Remembering that fear, joined with the horrific likelihood that he might start blubbering in front of Belle, drives him to his feet, and he utters pardons a second before whisking himself off to his tower.

Belle is of course the problem, he decides while pacing stolidly and aimlessly and sighing away the ache in his chest. He swore an oath to love no one as long as Bae is lost to him. But she’s here, and she is… That’s not to say he actually… It’s his old spinner’s heart, the foolish thing. It still hasn’t learned- the people he loves, they leave. He needs to show it what comes of entertaining silly little hopes. He must look ahead, and see how Belle will free herself from him. He’ll be calm then.

This is easier said than done. As proven moments ago in the hall, the seer’s sight is finnicky at best, coming and going as it pleases. And when he can grab hold of it, it sometimes rattles through more possibilities than Rumpelstiltskin’s mostly human mind can comprehend. But perhaps he can channel it, focus it in one direction. Indeed, his focus is clear- it’s Belle’s future he seeks.

He shuts his eyes and extends his awareness to find her walking back to the kitchens, and so takes the opportunity to transport himself into her room and pluck a strand of hair from her pillow. This he carries back to his tower, then flicks through a dense tome of spells on a desk until he comes to a powerful divination spell. With his eyes screwed shut as he mutters the words that will drag his seer’s sight to heel, he does not notice a hair from his own head come loose and drift down to join Belle’s in his palm. But as unremarkable days of caretaker duties unspool within his mind, a mysterious golden haze drifts through, and he feels time speed up to a blur.

He tries to haul back on imaginary reins- he has no interest in zooming all the way to Belle’s eventual death. Slowly his awareness settles on one point in the future.

The first surprise is that he isn’t a ghostly spectator in this random moment to come. He feels himself present in the space. Looking down, he finds himself wearing, not his usual silk and leather, but rather loose-fitting wool trousers matched with a jacket and a shirt fastened by a simple row of buttons. His only silk is a thin strip tied around his neck, discretely folded under the shirt collar.

His second surprise are his hands. They appear as those of an ordinary man, a state which is anything but ordinary. His right wraps comfortably around a gold-handled cane- in this peculiar vision he’s aware of his maimed ankle as a distant stiffness. His left hand holds the bow and neck of a violin. He doesn’t have much time to study the instrument before the sounds of an opening door and a ringing bell come from beyond a curtain hanging in the doorway of the room he occupies, which appears to be the storage space of a small shop of curiosities.

After a moment, the curtain is pulled back to admit his third and biggest surprise- Belle, carrying what appears to be a sack made of paper and wearing a skirt far shorter than anything Rumpelstiltskin’s ever seen on a woman of her station. She doesn’t seem at all bothered by this, smiling wide as her eyes fall to the violin. “Unearth something interesting?” she asks before setting down the sack on a small table nearby. “You might want to wait until after lunch to tell me about it. Ruby said Madame Mayor was snapping at everyone when she got coffee this morning, so we may not have long to eat.”

None of that makes sense to Rumpelstiltskin- or, at least, the Rumpelstiltskin of the present. The Rumpelstiltskin to come replies with ease while his past counterpart observes from within, “If she requires another lesson in patience, I’m happy to provide it. Come have a look at this.”

She comes to stand before him as he holds out the violin. Its body is decorated with wood inlays depicting two people in profile with their arms outstretched. Magic curls away from their hands, meeting at the strings. “Lovely. And powerful, I suppose?” she inquires with a raised brow.

“Versatile, more than anything. Play a certain tune, achieve a certain magical effect, assuming you play well. Shall I?” Rumpelstiltskin lets the cane fall against his hip and transfers the bow to his right hand, setting it on the strings but pausing there with his gaze on Belle.

She nibbles at her lower lip, but soon says with a sparkle of mischief in her eyes, “Why not?”

“Very well,” Rumpelstiltskin says with a grin of his own. He closes his eyes and searches the enchantments laid upon the violin, and finds something that might actually be familiar. An old tune his Aunt Iph used to play for Aunt Im. The melody slowly emerges as he draws the bow along the strings.

It’s not long before he hears a soft gasp and then a bright giggle. Belle’s hands fall on his shoulders and he opens his eyes to take her in as she floats about an arm’s length off the floor. Light shining through a nearby window gleams every part of her it touches. He maintains the tempo and volume of the song, which keeps her from drifting any higher. After a moment’s uncertainty, she lifts her hands, swaying and bobbing slightly to the beat, turning a slow circle in the air. Rumpelstiltskin can’t say when he’s seen anything more beautiful, and his heart melts with love.

When she faces him again her hands return to his shoulders. Beaming down on him, she murmurs, “That’s the tragedy of musicians- they don’t get to dance.”

Her brow furrows slightly and her hold on him tightens, and he actually feels the magic he’s emitting flow through her back into him, settling in his feet as a lightness that almost tickles. Then he’s rising, rising up to meet her. Belle’s arms slide around his neck as the distance continues to close between them. Her lips brush his and in that instant there’s a blinding flash of gold light behind his eyes and the vision snaps out of existence and Rumpelstiltskin drops hard against the desk, knocking the tome of spells into a mess of fluttering pages on the floor.

He grips the edge of the desk, feet and lips still tingling, trying to understand what just happened. Because it can’t be the future, what he saw. It’s not possible. Him and Belle, together, really quite unmistakably in love. True love. No, it cannot be. Anyway, in that world it didn’t seem instantly apparent where Bae was, and therefore it was no world Rumpelstiltskin wants to live in. Not at all.

He crouches down to pick up and turn the tome over and check for damage. The spell on the page it falls open to is something to do with happy dreams. Ah, clearly he misread earlier and cast this instead of a divination spell. Of course. He should try again. Ensure he’s on the right page, and figure out what fate of Belle’s will take her away.

Doctor Craven studies the paper. The hanging bits, the remnants of the page being pulled from a spiral of metal, had been meticulously removed. There are no errant tears or crumples, just the straight crease right down the middle of the paper, bisecting the pale blue lines. Upon the lines sat smooth, flowing cursive, written in safe, non-lethal marker pen.

Renowned serial killer Victor Zsasz sits in a stiff metal chair at a small desk bolted to the floor, his legs chained to a metal hoop jutting out of the floor, his right hand strapped to his side. His left hand, mishapen with vertical and diagonal scars, is free. His long thin scarred fingers twirl the marker pen. His face is a mask of scars and an uneven, predatory smile. His eyes are impossibly dark.

”A, mm, a bit of an homage to Whitman,” the patient purrs. “I’ve always liked Leaves of Grass, you know, his sentence structure and generous use of the ellipse...” Victor taps the marker pen on the desk, tap tap tap, to produce his own ellipses.

”I told you to write about your killing.”

”But I didn’t want to,” Victor sighs, petulance staining his voice. “I wanted to write a love poem- Lord help me, Doctor Isley must have snuck a little, ah, friend into my cell.”

”Mister Zsasz-“

”Now, I’m not saying I love anyone,” Victor continues, thoroughly finished engaging this weak opponent, “but I feel such a turbulent je ne sais quoi for him, you know, Doctor?” He moves the marker pen in his hand, conducting an orchestra only he can hear.

“What is it the Greeks would call this, hmm? This non-romantic sort of love that makes you want to, oh, I don’t know, feel every drop of blood leave their body and run over your skin? It’s hell to clean off, but nothing quite compa-“

”MISTER ZSASZ.”

Doctor Craven crunches the paper and throws the ball over gis shoulder. He slaps another clean piece down on the desk.

”Your killings. The most recent ones. Now.”

Victor groans and stares through the doctor.

”You’d best work on your bedside manner, Doctor.” He uncaps the marker pen without assistance. “I always have places for the recent hires who need salvation.”

Pulling up to the proper curb, Hinata pauses and takes a breath, hands still on her steering wheel. She really has no idea why she feels so nervous about this. During her career so far, she’s interviewed hundreds of people. From the mayor of the city to small business owners. So why does the prospect of talking to this guy seem so...daunting?

Sure, his little shop is...odd. And so is he, come to think of it. There’s just something so...mysterious about both. Like he’s hiding something, but...what could he be hiding? It’s just a little antique shop, right?

Though he mentioned something about some kind of specialty goods, and...a back room, with customers by appointment. Does he...dabble in collector items that are more valuable than random knick knacks? Or maybe something more...shady. But he acts like he doesn’t have anything to hide when it comes to his business, so what has her so convinced he’s keeping something to himself?

...either way, she doubts he’ll admit to it, or slip up just because she’s interviewing him. While Hinata is good at what she does, she’s not that kind of good. Not very skilled with “gotcha” kinds of questions and lead-ups. So while she’s unendingly curious about this man and his goings-on, she has a feeling she won’t wriggle much out of him that he doesn’t have intentions to admit.

But...sitting in her car isn’t going to get this done. Hopefully no one else has gotten here ahead of her - she’d prefer to do this without an audience. Hers is the only car along the curb, but foot traffic is indeed a thing. So, she gathers up her supplies (which amounts to her phone to record the audio of the interview, and a pen and pad of paper for notes) before slipping out of her car and locking it behind her.

Stepping up to the entrance, Hinata can’t help a small pause. Something feels...off. Like she walked through a cold spot, but she didn’t notice a change in temperature. But she’s come this far, there’s no going back now. A hand takes the handle, and twists it to open the door.

At a glance, the shop seems empty, and she can’t help a small sigh of relief. But that same glance also shows no Sasuke. Maybe he’s in the -?

WHUMP.

Colliding back against the door in shock at the sound, Hinata’s eyes go round and her heart nearly leaps through her chest. What the hell was that?! A rapid turn of her head shows no one in the same room as her, but...it sounded like it came from the wall behind the counter?

...the back room…?

More sounds reach her ears, muffled compared to the impact. Like things clattering to the floor. Is he being robbed?! For a moment she considers withdrawing her phone and calling the police.

But something stops her. Instead, she hurries across the room and pulls open the door in a sudden bid of boldness.

Normally she’d never dream of stepping into what is clearly a private space. But something is nagging at her, like a pull at an invisible collar around her neck, urging her forward. So as she sees into the rear room, it seems to threaten to choke her.

...it’s...on fire?

Staring in shock, Hinata flinches as something crashes against the wall just beside her, erupting into so many pieces she has no idea what it was. Then she catches sight of two figures. One, clearly Sasuke, is...is...throwing fire from his hands at the other. Long dark hair and a pale face give Hinata a creeping feeling along her spine, as though she shouldn’t be looking at them. They seem to twist and curl around Sasuke’s efforts like a ribbon in the wind.

...she should be in shock. This...this isn’t something normal. And yet Hinata simply realizes that Sasuke is in trouble. Sasuke might die. And while she can’t really call them friends, he did help her the other night. And now she has a chance to help him in return.

And with that realization, something in her seems to break, like a dam unable to hold back water any longer. She gasps, a feeling flooding her insides and washing over her like she’s been thrown into a bottomless lake. Flowing, tugging, drowning unless she retakes control.

So she reaches. Feels something she’s never felt before. And she pulls with every ounce of her strength until her head comes up above metaphorical water.

And with it, she finds what she grabbed hold of.

From an urn not far off, a torrent of water erupts like a geyser at her command, seemingly without end. It sprays and arcs like waves against a cliffside, putting out the fires threatening to consume the shop.

It draws the gazes of the other two occupants of the room - one in shock, the other in fury. Like a specter, the pale figure makes to strike, slinking forward like a bolt of lightning.

But like her hands are puppeteered by another, Hinata lifts them of their own accord. The torrent follows her guidance, beginning to wrap her foe in a twisting, ebbing sphere of liquid: the current battering them and rendering them unable to control their movement.

Sooner or later, they’ll drown.

Glowering at her with puffed cheeks of air, they then lift a hand, a dark hole opening at their command and letting them slip through, like some kind of...portal.

With the threat gone, Hinata’s grip releases...and the water drops to coat the floor before draining into a grate nearby.

...silence, save for the heaving of breath from the pair that remain.

Soaked, Sasuke stares at her in utter disbelief. No longer is she a rounded-eared el’tahl. Instead, they’re long and pointed like his own, glamour lost with his concentration elsewhere. And where her eyes had been a pale lavender before, they’re now a more blue shade, seeming to glow and dim as she lets her energy fade.

...is she…?

Turning to him, she seems to sway slightly, as though suddenly lost and simply watching as he approaches.

“...well...I guess that answers my question, at least in part,” Sasuke offers, mopping water from his face. “...I had a feeling there was el’ven buried in you somewhere, but...I haven’t seen someone like you in a long, long time.”

“...I…?”

“That was ven you just used. Magic, as people call it nowadays. Gives you control over an element. Yours seems to be water. Like mine is fire. Somewhere in your bloodline is a source for it. Seems you’ve woken it up.”

She just...stares. “...who...who was that?”

“An old enemy, here to steal from me,” Sasuke mutters. From the front of his garment he draws a kind of chainmail shirt. “I was repairing this for someone else when they heard I had it. Still not sure how. But...with your help, they were forced to retreat.”

“...s-sorry about the...the mess…”

“This place has seen worse, believe me,” he replies dryly. “Water isn’t about to hurt anything in here.” He lets his eyes flicker over her face, which are now an open and unhidden red. “...are you all right? I’d think you’d be pretty shook up.”

“...I’m...confused. But…?”

He sighs. “...maybe we best sit and have some tea. Then...I suppose I have a lot to tell you. Though, as I’m sure you can guess...it won’t be anything you can print.”

At his flat joke, she manages a wispy laugh. “...no. No, I...I guess not.”

So I know I promised to do two drabbles today BUT it ended up being FAR busier than I planned :’D So tomorrow SHOULD be my last day: I actually have days 30 and 31 done, but I need to write 29, of course. So that’ll be that! This is another followup piece, and sadly I’ll be leaving this one here. Getting a bit too far into lore-type stuffs. And I’m out of days xD Basically, Hinata has magic water powers, woo! Which is what Sasuke was sensing, and what was making Hinata “sensitive” to Sasuke as a fellow magicky person, lol Anywho, I best be off for the night. I might, might do 29 tonight but I honestly doubt it, I’m sleepy =w= So I’ll see you guys tomorrow for what SHOULD be the last day. Spirituality in islam: The Horizon of “the Secret” and What Lies Beyond

I am aware that I am not able to write and speak about this topic as it should be written and spoken about. My pen and words also tell me this. I suffer from keeping silent and not writing anything, while writing or speaking about a matter that is beyond my capacity of perception and expression is a venture that I take on with trepidation. However, I have been able neither to keep silent nor be relieved of the anxieties that my writings have generated in my spirit. Having always regarded my inability and neediness as a call for God’s help, and my venture as a signal to incite people of endeavor and devotion whose hearts dominate their tongues, whose tongues translate their “secret,” whose “secret” is open to their horizon of “private,” and whose “private” is connected to their “more private,” I have uttered “In and with the Name of God,” and “from God,” and “toward God,” and I advance asking for God’s extra grace.

For those who can understand, I have always admitted that I am not a person who is able to write or speak about this profound topic and similar, other simpler ones. But I am convinced that these topics, which have so far formed three published volumes and will possibly form a new fourth one, should be discussed. During all my daring attempts to write about them, I have wept with my pen, sometimes with yearning, and sometimes shuddering. While my pen has breathed with the ink it pours forth, I have breathed with my tears. It is the Creator Who knows my heart and has perfect knowledge of my “secret;” it is again He Who knows the truths of “the private” and “the more private,” and Who makes them known by whomever He wills, and it is He Who graciously protects and helps those who narrate what they read and hear.

Literally meaning something kept hidden, sir (“the secret”), which was discussed before, is a heavenly faculty belonging to the heart. The secret has the same meaning for the heart as the spirit for the body. Meaning something concealed and imperceptible, khafi (“the private”) is another deep dimension of the heart which is turned to the realms and truths beyond those to which “the secret” is turned, and another observatory from which we can look on the truths. As for akhfa (“the more private”), which literally means something more hidden, more obscure, and more profound for perceiving, it is a window which is open to further and further realms and truths and through which God’s gifts pour.

According to some friends of the Ultimate Truth, “the spirit” is an element through which one loves and has a relationship with God Almighty; “the heart” is a storehouse of the knowledge of God; “the secret” is a system with which we can observe more abstract and profound truths by His grace, while “the private” is a design or map of Divine mysteries, and “the more private” is a mysterious key with which to open the Hidden Treasure. Without God’s grace and assistance, it would not be possible to know the true nature of these faculties. Although with his secret, private, and more private every believer has the potential to have certain knowledge of the Attributes and Essence of God, as well as the Divine mysteries and the Hidden Treasure, it is not possible for human free will to set these faculties in action without Divine leave or help. Human beings are able to see by God’s causing us to see, to hear by His causing us to hear, and to feel by His causing us to feel, and are not able to do any of these actions by themselves; in the same way it is impossible for a human being to say anything concerning the Attributes, Essential Qualities or Characteristics, and Essence of the Divine Being without God’s help or grace. God Almighty has perfect knowledge of every human being, including their spirit, heart, secret, private and more private. He has perfect knowledge of everything, be it of particular or universal character. He enables whomever He will to know whatever part of His knowledge He wills to be known, while He keeps unknown whatever part He wills to remain unknown. Concerning His Knowledge the Qur’an tells us: He knows whatever is in their hearts (48:18); Surely I know all that you do not know (2:30); I know well all that you reveal and all that you have been keeping secret (2:33); Know that surely God knows whatever is in your souls (2:235) Do they (the hypocrites) not know that God knows what they keep concealed and their private counsels and gossips, and that God has full knowledge of the whole of the Unseen? (9:78). Without His making known, human beings would not even be able to know themselves, let alone know what lies behind the secret.

Since the creation of humanity, it is only with God’s special guidance and assistance that humanity has been able to read whatever is to be read correctly concerning the outer and inner world. Whenever humanity has remained indifferent to His guidance and illumination, it has continuously faltered and been dragged into hesitation, and it has not been able to say a true word, particularly about the Divine Essence, Attributes, and Names. Whenever people have opened their mouths to utter something, they have only been able to utter nonsense.

God Almighty has kept us informed about His Essence, Attributes, and Names by means of His distinguished servants, known as “the perfectly purified, chosen ones, the truly good” (38:47). We have tried to perceive these transcending matters in keeping with their instructions and thereby have been saved from falling into hesitation or conflict. During times when we have remained deaf to the instructions and enlightenments of the true guides, such as the Prophets, saints, and the purified, saintly scholars, we have been neither able to grasp the truth nor preserve the balance concerning the matters of transcending character. It is the Divine Being Who knows Himself, while others can have knowledge of Him only to the extent He makes known. Confirming this point, our master, upon him be peace and blessings, declares: “I know my Lord by my Lord.” This Prophetic saying is of great significance, particularly in respect of teaching us that the Divine Being is beyond our scope of perception or knowledge, and it is the Divine Being alone Who is the unique source of all true knowledge.

Returning to our main discussion, the secret is, as mentioned before, the initial point of observing and studying the truth and what lies beyond it. According to their capacity and the horizon of their knowledge of Divinity, every believer can read, evaluate, and interpret the mysteries concerning the Creator and the created through this depth of their heart by God’s leave and help and with the signs, markers, and signposts that He has laid out.

The private is a horizon of observing the realms of existence and non-existence together from above; it is a receiver for those who are elect for special regard and favors, and a particular depth of the heart that will enable them to look through on the mysteries of Divinity and the things or beings that have not yet been brought into or have been sent from the physical existence. It is an exceptional gift of the Unique, Eternally Besought One to humans.

As for the more private, as an incomparable gift from God’s grace it is the most important dimension of a heart which is open to the Hidden Treasure, a heavenly faculty.

Those favored with the secret and those distinguished with the private and those honored and exalted with the more private receive the gifts flowing down onto their horizons, the presents offered to their highest point of perfection, and the showers of inspiration that descend to their atmosphere; they consider them and reveal whatever of these and to whatever extent they are allowed to reveal to those who are qualified to receive them; the rest they keep concealed, without giving any secrets to those who cannot understand or keep them. This is what the Prophets and the purified, saintly scholars of verification have done. They are the captivating translators of the Divine will; they depend on the eternal Criterion in all their words and actions. As for those who confuse the rulings and commandments of the Name the All-Outward with the mysteries of the Name the All-Inward, even though they are among the heroes of nearness to God, since they depend on their own vision and unveilings in interpreting the truths, and are content with their own sensations and experiences, and since they are therefore not able to weigh up the results of their visions or observations in the balance of the Sunna, they not only fall but also cause others to fall into confusion; they cause others to make faults by revealing certain Divine mysteries which they are not allowed to reveal due to oblivion and intoxication, eventually losing their life or becoming the targets of severe reprimands or being condemned in the public view.

It is true that God Almighty has sometimes revealed certain mysteries of His Essence, Attributes and Names. But He has done so within the framework of certain causes as a requirement of His Dignity and Grandeur, and He has offered them from behind certain veils. For this reason, what befalls the loyal servants at the door of the Ultimate Truth is not to manifest whatever vision or unveiling with which they have been favored, thus avoiding throwing the masses into confusions and wrong actions. There is safety in silence and respect for the Ultimate Truth in not revealing Divine mysteries. A time comes for one who has reached the end of the path when all Divine Attributes and Names are eclipsed by the lights of the Divine Essence. This is the horizon of All things are perishable except His Face (28:88). Like everything else, the corporeal existence of the servant, which is entrusted to the servant, is also eclipsed and becomes invisible. This transient, death-bound design is completely surrounded by the lights of the All-Permanent Existence and only the signals of the manifestation of the Divine Essence are experienced. This spiritual experience has been described as the Ultimate Truth making the hidden manifest.

The favors that emerge on the horizon of the private depend on one’s freedom from selfhood. For this reason, those who are at the beginning of the spiritual journey are not able to be familiar with the manifestations of the True Existence unless they are freed from their “figurative” existence. Those who see themselves as their own owners can neither reach the horizon of “the private” nor rise to the peak where the mysteries of Divine Lordship can be observed nor receive the fragrance of the Hidden Treasure. The mysteries of the Hidden Treasure are revealed on the horizon of “the more private.” This mysterious realm that is beyond the realm of mysteries is a horizon which is particular primarily to the one who is the nearest of all to the Divine Being, upon him be peace and blessings, and then to the other servants at His door in accordance with their adherence to the Prophetic way. Those who have not experienced the secret or drunk sips from the cup of the private can never rise to this peak. Just as those who have stuck fast to the wording can never discover the meaning, neither can those who only concentrate on the meaning ever attain familiarity with the essence or arrive at the truth. Supposing the impossible, even if they do arrive at the truth somehow, they can never get a glimpse of the Truth of the truths.

The Truth of the truths is the unique source and foundation of everything. Those who feel and experience It have grasped everything, while those who cannot find It continuously suffer tiredness and spend their life in vain. The Hidden Treasure is another title of the treasure of the mystery of Oneness and the absolutely Unseen, which cannot be grasped not only by ordinary people but also by those who have reached the horizons of the heart and the secret, and even for those who are the more advanced in experiencing the private. Everything in the name of existence and favor originates in this all-transcending horizon and descends downward, developing branches until it reaches us. It is the original beginning, because everything ends in It, while humankind, which is the fruit of creation, is the result. This may also be called “the manifestation in the form of descent.” Our horizon as corporeal beings is the start of the journey realized toward the Hidden Treasure through further and further realms; this is achieved by setting the systems of the heart and spirit into action, while the more private is the end or end point. This journeying is the ascent or ascension.

God’s saintly friends usually say: “The womb is related to or has connection with the realm of Knowledge.” This may be interpreted to mean that everything has an original existence in Divine Knowledge, and that these known entities or elements of Knowledge proceed toward external existence through certain, pre-ordained stages of identification or specification in order to function as mirrors of the All-Pure Existence. In other words, everything has a hidden existence that is free of time and space in the Hidden Treasure. In the initial stage of existence, they are individually identified in Knowledge, and then they are honored with spiritual existence. Finally, they are favored with the garment of subtle and corporeal existence. These are roughly the three stages of coming into corporeal existence. This process is described as a favor of descent, while the spiritual journeying upward through the heart and the spirit, or the heart and the secret, or the secret and the private, or the private and the more private is called ascent or ascension.

The horizon of the more private is an exceptional rank or realm that is particular to the way of Prophet Muhammad, upon him be peace and blessings. Those who do not follow this way cannot reach this peak. The final point that they can attain is the secret or the private. This is the end point of their rise that their capacity allows them to reach. Each of the steps at these peaks is also the point where the genuine nature of a Prophet is projected and marks the line of his spiritual journeying. Those who journey along the same line or are favored with the observation of truths from the same horizon seem to be the representatives of some basic qualities particular to that Prophet. It is because of this subtle reality that there may appear among those representatives ones who confuse the original with the representation and therefore claim to have a part in the Prophethood of that Prophet; or some of the followers of those representatives may attribute to their masters partnership in the Prophethood in question. However, how can the light of the moon or the reflection of the sun in bubbles can be compared with the sun itself?

According to the Sufis, the original owners of the highest ranks in question are the greatest of the Prophets, such as Prophet Adam, Prophet Abraham, Prophet Moses, and Prophet Jesus, upon them be peace. According to the Sufis, the sole, unique master of the horizon of the more private is the Seal of the Mission of Prophethood, upon him be perfect blessings and peace. The rise of the Prophets from the beginning to the end was through a sudden, instantaneous Divine attraction. Others have to follow their way, even when they are favored with Divine attraction. Believers advance on the spiritual path in adherence to its disciplines, sipping at knowledge of God with a new observation with every step from the spirit to the heart, and from the heart to the secret, and from the secret to the private, and from the private to the more private. They are cooled by being washed in the most profound and enjoyable of spiritual pleasures; they experience new types of intoxication through the mysteries of Divine Acts; they observe different manifestations in the horizon of Divine Names; they encounter surprise after surprise in the atmosphere of Divine Attributes of Glory; they undergo changes and transformations through the mysteries of Divinity; they ultimately reach the final point in their rise according to their capacity.

The perfections acquired along the path through the realm of the initial manifestations of Divine Commands are preliminary to the gifts and ranks that are to be obtained in the realm of creation. The former journey (which is in the realm of the initial manifestation of Divine Commands) is the path of sainthood, while the latter (which is realized in the realm of creation) is the ascension of Prophethood. This also shows that sainthood serves Prophethood and it was a step toward it in Prophets. A saint advances and rises in order to find a new thing at every step, and thus deepens in what they have found, while a Prophet stands at the intersection of the realms of the initial manifestation of Divine Commands and creation in order to lead others to find what he has found according to the individual capacity. He lays paths from multiplicity to unity and weaves a lace of spirituality from matter. Although his mission encompasses all the peculiarities of the realm of the initial manifestation of Divine Commands, it fundamentally relates to the realm of creation. With the exception of the pillars of belief, which originally belong to the realm of the initial manifestation of Divine Commands, all the orders and prohibitions of Islam, the bounties of Paradise, the punishment of Hell, the happiness of the vision of God in Paradise, and the delight of relationships being established with those near to God constitute the essence of the basic messages of the Prophets and relate to the realm of creation.

All the acts incumbent on the Muslims in the age of responsibility, and all the principles of being advantageous or disadvantageous also relate to the realm of creation and are the fruits and greenhouses provided by the horizon of Prophethood. The regular, optional recitations, and the actions of the heart, such as self-criticism, self-supervision, and reflection, which are regarded as provisions on the way of sainthood, support the basic commandments of the Religion and the essential duties of the religious life. The negligence and failure in the latter is the cause of the deprivation of the blessings of the former, while those who fulfill the latter completely do not make lasting faults in the performance of the former. The nearness to God which the way of Prophethood enables through the fulfillment of obligations is essential, while the nearness obtained on the way of sainthood through supererogatory acts is of a secondary nature. If something essential is fulfilled accurately, that which is of secondary nature is subordinated to it.

O God! Revive us through obligatory acts and duties and make us alive in them. Adorn us with supererogatory acts and duties and make us near to You. Bestow blessings and peace on our master Muhammad and on his Family and Companions, altogether.

This book already feels like a daydream. Quick and fleeting but something I can’t get out of my everlasting thoughts. (review under cut)

First off, I wanted to mention that I plan on doing singular reviews for each of the books in the Raven Cycle series rather than one collective review of the whole series. If the rest of the series continues to be anything like the first book, I feel like it does more justice to write about the books as I read them. The story takes you in so many different directions that it feels correct to write about them as you discover the mysteries of the series rather than after you know them.

That being said, all I could say when I finished this book was what the fuck. Not to be crude, but I was so absolutely blown away the entire time I was reading this book that I truly had nothing else to say by the end of it other than to question what the hell I had just read. But like, in the absolute best way possible.

The setup of the book introduces you to Blue Sargent, a normal girl whose life and family is anything but normal. Blue is not only the daughter of a psychic, but is completely surrounded by them in her small house at 300 Fox Way. She herself, however, isn’t a psychic but rather enhances their power whenever she is around. Ever since Blue was born, every psychic around her has told her the same simple fact.

Whenever she kisses her true love, she is going to kill him.

This was never really a problem for Blue until she met Gansey. Or rather, Gansey’s spirit.

Because during Saint Mark’s Eve, while out with her aunt to discover the names of those who are going to die within the next twelve months, Blue finally sees a spirit for the first time in her whole life! But spirits only show themselves to non-seers if they are their true love or they caused their death.

I’m sure you can see where this is going.

On the flip side of this story, Gansey, a rich boy attending Aglionby (a prestigious all-boys boarding school) is on a search of his own. He and his eccentric group of friends are looking to discover the secrets behind Henrietta, Virginia. Specifically, he’s looking to learn more about the ley lines that run through the city and their connection to a mystical ancient Welsh king who may still be living after all these years.

If this description doesn’t make any sense to you, welcome to the club. I find it really, really hard to accurately describe this book in an easy way for people to understand and if anyone has a better way to do it, please let me know. Honestly, even the official description for this book doesn’t do it justice. I’ve been likening it back to Twin Peaks, not because of the actual content of the story but in the way the book spins a very normal, realistic group of people and their lives into something magical in ways that just absolutely whips you around every twist and turn. The story holds so much more than what is shown on the cover and every time you think you’ve figured something out you get launched into a whole new situation that creates a whole new solution to a problem you’ve already forgotten you were dealing with.

At one point while reading, I had to stop and text my best friend to tell him that this book made me wish I had one single creative bone in my body because I was so blown away by the writing. The words flow together like a witches spell, poetry that wraps you up in your own little magical world, while still somehow conveying how it feels to be a teenager desperately looking for answers about life and trying to find your own family. The imagery the book uses to pull you in is one thing but the symbolism is on a completely new level. In a book where tarot readings are a very important story element, the use of the story’s own symbolism reminds me very much of reading my own tarot decks and deciphering their meanings. Just little things like Gansey’s Epi-pen sitting in his car or Blue’s face on the Page of Cups. You can tell interest in a character runs deep when you can reference an everyday object and yearn to know the history behind it.

And, let’s be real here, the characters carry this book. Not because the plot is bad but rather because you have to love the characters to get the plot. While the plot takes its twists and turns, you have to understand these characters lives, their feelings, and their motivations. And Stiefvater definitely delivers. I couldn’t help but truly fall in love with every single one of the main characters, from Blue’s need to save everyone, to Gansey’s ability to get lost in what he loves, to Adam’s constant internal battle to be independent, to Ronan’s dealings with grief, to honestly practically everything about Noah. Sure, it’s your stereotypical gang of adventurous teens but there’s something so particularly magical and inviting about this group of teens that it’s one of those where you just can’t help but love all of them.

Truly, though, it’s hard to complain about a book that feels like it was written with all of my tastes in mind. I’ve never been big on fantasy but I love realistic magic and fantasy worlds that mold themselves around real, modern life. I love stories that are so outrageously crazy you don’t know what’s happening 99% of the time until you finally find that 1% and can put the pieces together only to realize that the story you thought you figured out was a different story and you actually don’t know anything at all. I’ve been interested in the paranormal and ley lines my whole life but more than that I love divination and tarot cards and using the future to understand the present. I’m also a sucker for a book with multiple POVs, which I wasn’t even expecting when I picked this book up but I’m so glad it had. This book kind of literally has everything.

I don’t know why this book started popping up in my circles so much recently, but I’m very glad it did. I’m also not sure how I missed this book when it first came out either, but without everyone constantly talking about it around me for some reason I definitely would not have picked it up. I’m very glad I decided to give it a chance while knowing absolutely nothing about it (LOL) and I can’t wait to continue to learn more about these characters and their stories and uncover more of the mystery of Henrietta, Virginia, and the strange, wonderful people who live there.

Starscreamian Correspondences: Part One

This is Part One of a two-part series. The topic is so large that I couldn’t cover even half of it! This first post is a general discussion of correspondences as they relate to Starscream, while in Part Two, you will find an exercise to help you develop your own personalized set of correspondences for Starscream.

What are Correspondences?

Correspondences are things that people tend to associate with… well, other things. In magick, correspondences are used to evoke the power of certain entities, or weave certain energies into your ritual or spell. A correspondence can be almost anything, from plants, colors, weapons, planets, constellations, elements, musical instruments, animals, numbers, crystals, days of the week, and so on.

Roses, for example, are sacred to Venus. So are apples, copper, the color green, the number five, and Friday. If you were to create a ritual that taps into Venusian energy, you might have it on a Friday, Venus’ sacred day, and make an offering of five roses, a green apple, or five copper pennies; you might light a green candle and write your intention using a pen with copper-colored ink. By using these correspondences, you are anchoring your working in Venusian energy, which will help you realize intentions associated with Venus, such as love or abundance.

Starscream has correspondences too.

Quite a lot of them, in fact! His classic colors of Silver and Red are obvious correspondences, as is the Eagle, since his G1 alt-mode is that of an F-15 Eagle. Numerologically, his name equates to the number 36 (or 9), so I consider those to be his sacred numbers, and his signature weapon, the Null-Ray, and coronation crown are also very much associated with him.

In addition to these ‘canon’ correspondences, I also have a large set of personal correspondences for Starscream. Some I can back up with evidence, while others are idiosyncratic. For example, I can make a reasonably solid argument for why I think Starscream is a Scorpio, but my reasons for thinking of the Thistle as one of his plant totems are more personal.

Below are my thoughts on some of the more canon-supported correspondences for Starscream. These are just suggestions. Take what resonates, and leave the rest. Your path with Starscream is yours, and it's ultimately up to you, and him, to decide what's best.

Starscream’s Weapons

Starscream has a number of weapons, ranging from deadly (his cluster-bombs) to comical (the slingshot he uses in *More Than Meets The Eye, Part 2*). But of course it’s his signature weapon, the Null-Ray, that’s always held the greatest fascination for me. Marvel's *Transformers Universe* comic series describes the null-ray as being "able to interrupt the flow of electricity in any circuitry... for periods of up to two minutes."

How cool is that? Not only does it interrupt the flow of energy through circuitry, but it also appears to stabilize or neutralize energies that have become unbalanced. It has even been shown to have healing properties. In the episode Auto Berserk, for example, Starscream fired his null-ray at Red Alert, causing his logic circuits to stabilize. Magickally speaking, the Null-Ray has so many potential applications that I ended up writing a separate post for it, complete with a meditation. See The Null-Ray: Magickal Uses.

Starscreamian Colors

I love how colorful the Seekers are! They are like splendidly plumaged birds, each with his own vivid color scheme that's uniquely his. I have some headcanon regarding color in TFs. For example, I like the idea that a character's outward colors aren't paint, but are created by chromites—that is, specialized nanites that create the color and finish on the character's frame. I also like the idea that the chromites respond to the character's spark in creating his or her signature colors and patterns, and so there is often a correspondence between a character's frame color and the color of their spark.

Color is a fun topic. There is no doubt that color has a potent psychological, and even physiological effect, on us, and I wear Starscream’s colors a lot. For this reason, it makes complete sense to use it in magick. It can be incorporated into your workings in countless ways (too many to list!), but here is a quick run-down of colors I associate with Starscream, and what their magickal associations tend to be:

Red: The color of human blood, red is associated with vitality, life force, passion, instinctual drives, survival and sexuality. It’s also thought to be the color of the Root, or Base Chakra, which is located at the perineum and is associated with survival and security.

Silver: The metal silver is associated with the Moon, with night, feminine forces, yin, intuition, the deep subconscious, wisdom and secrets.

Blue: The color of Earth’s sky, blue is also thought to be the color of the Throat Chakra, associated with mind, science, reason, speech, writing and other forms of verbal communication. It’s also the color most associated with water, and has connotations of purity and cleansing.

Yellow: The color of our Sun, yellow is thought to be the color of the Solar Plexus Chakra, located between the ribs and the navel on a human. This Chakra is associated with ego, will, drive and aggression. It's interesting that the only yellow part of Starscream is his brilliant golden-yellow cockpit canopy, and that when he's in root mode, it's located in roughly in the same location as the Solar Plexus Chakra would be on a human. It's as if his Will or Ego center is hugely overblown and exaggerated - which is actually true! In fact, his French name is Ego).

Gold: The color of Starscream’s crown is, as you might imagine, the color associated with extravagance, wealth, riches, and excess, though it is also associated with illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom.

Purple: The color of Starscream’s coronation mantle is purple, a color which represents the sythesis of blue’s calm stability with red’s fierce energy. Purple is associated with intuition, the psychic realm, royalty, creativity, luxury, power, pride, homosexuality, ambition, mysticism, independence, magic and… wouldn’t you know it… resurrection. (And, of course, Decepticons.)

The Mantle

Okay, confession time: I’ll admit that I felt embarrassed and vaguely uneasy the first time I watched the coronation scene, and as we all know by now, it turned out my sense of unease was fully justified. Whenever things go well for Starscream, it’s pretty much always because the writers are setting him up for a fall; and what a fall this was.

*pauses to sigh again*

But in seriousness, there’s a lot to be said about the symbolism of these clothing items. A mantle represents authority. In fact, when we say that someone is ‘assuming the mantle’ of something, it means they are taking on a specific role or position, along with any associated responsibilities.

Perhaps the presence of the mantle in the coronation scene was intended to underline the idea that Starscream was overstepping his assigned role in life, and that he was unprepared, or unfit, to take on the responsibilities associated with the role he’d just usurped.

There is, of course, another way of looking at it, one that is especially suitable for Ghost Season symbolism, which can be summarized by the saying, ‘fake it ‘til you make it.’ Our goals and ambitions *should* be a stretch for us. They should be a challenge, and they will almost certainly push us into taking on new roles and responsibilities for which we may feel unfit, or unprepared. That’s how growth is.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is brazen things out. Put on your mantle, wear it with pride, and prepare your acceptance speech. “Fellow Decepticons! As your new leader…” In time—and with practice—your new mantle will begin to feel as much a part of you as your null-rays.

Until then, my friend, fake on! (It looks so damn good on you.)

The Crown

Crowns, as you can probably guess, represent royalty. They correspond with the Crown Chakra, the energy center which connects us to universal energy (aka God), and thus symbolizes a monarch’s ‘divine’ right to rule. This is a very ancient idea. Throughout history, rulers have been viewed either as gods themselves, or as divinely appointed.

The Transformers series is fully on board with this notion, presenting the Autobot Matrix as a stand-in for the divine force that confers kingship upon those it deems worthy. In other words, those who possess a special, mysterious quality get divinely appointed to rule over the rest of us. Call it… the Touch. But Starscream, in refreshingly iconoclastic fashion, upends this whole paradigm.

Sure, he could wait around for a sparkly rock to decide he’s worthy to rule, or he could take matters into his own hands. Of course by doing so, he violated the established ‘natural order’ of the Transformers universe, and because of this, he was swiftly put back in his place. One does not simply appoint oneself king! You must stand around and wait until the sparkly rock chooses you. (Obviously!)

In light of what I’ve said above, you may already have guessed that you can invoke the symbolism of the crown as a means of activating to your Crown Chakra and connecting to the divine, especially your own divine nature. The crown can also symbolize the act of choosing oneself; of reclaiming one’s personal and spiritual authority.

Starscream’s crown has four prongs. In numerology, 4 represents stability, rationality, structure and rules. It’s linked to the Emperor card in the Tarot deck—which is interesting, since the Emperor, in Tarot, is the king of kings—and it’s also associated with the Death card. In some cultures, 4 is considered an unlucky number due to its association with death, but the Death card in Tarot is actually a positive card which symbolizes transformation. Starscream’s crown is an excellent symbol to employ if you are seeking to take charge of your life through your magick, or to transform it in a deep and powerful way.

The scarlet gems which adorn Starscream’s crown are another obvious bit of symbolism. We’ve already talked about the symbolism of the color Red, and we could speculate about what type of gems those are (rubies, perhaps?), but since this is getting long, I want to draw your attention to that central, hexagonal gem that sits directly on the forehead of the crown.

That is a Third Eye. It actually looks like one of Starscream’s own optics, but turned sideways—a classic depiction of a Third Eye. The Third Eye is the Sixth Chakra, which on humans is thought to be located on the forehead, above and directly between the eyes. It governs intuition and psychic abilities, making Starscream’s crown a wonderful symbol to employ in psychic development or awakening one’s intuition.

In one of his manuscripts he penned the following words: All the mysteries are focused in the infinite Price of our Redemption like the radii of a circle converging in the center. In this devotion all the truths of faith are summed up. For this reason we say in the consecration of our chalice: the "Mystery of Faith." In a letter to Pope Leo XII he wrote: The other devotions are all aids to Catholic piety, but this devotion is its foundation, support, and essence. Devotion to Mary, in particular, took on a special hue as he beheld it irradiated by the Precious Blood. He considered the Precious Blood the source of Mary's singular privileges: her Immaculate Conception, her Divine Motherhood, her Assumption, her Queenship; while, on the other hand, he looked upon Mary as the fount of the Price of Redemption as well as the dispenser of its infinite merits. Not only the mysteries of the Church, but also its glories bore a special affinity to the Precious Blood. They flowed forth from it as a torrent of water from a spring. "Oh fount of every mercy, grant that my tongue, purpled with His Blood in the daily celebration of the Mass, may bless you now and forever!" "The Divine Blood is the Price of our Redemption, healing balm for our souls, tender consolation in our labors; . . . it is the source of all the good we possess. Let us be bold and let us place our confidence in the merits of the Precious Blood." Along the "Ways" In his favorite devotion Gaspar found a unifying theme for the story of all mankind. Promised in the Garden of Eden, prefigured throughout the Old Testament, consummated in the New Testament, the Precious Blood runs like a unifying golden thread through the tapestry of mankind's relations with God. "Other devotions," said the Saint, "which are products of various times have holy and praiseworthy beginnings, but they go back only so far; this devotion is so ancient that it goes back to the moment when Adam sinned, for which reason Jesus was called, 'the Lamb who has been slain from the foundation of the world.'" Since adoration of the Precious Blood was the bloodstream of Gaspar's own personal spiritual life, he quite naturally considered it a sure and attractive way of salvation for others also. In a treatise entitled The Most Precious Blood, Fount of All Spiritual Riches, he describes how the devotion is able to lead a soul from the foothills of the purgative way to the mountain heights of the unitive way. While in the purgative way, the soul, through meditation on the Price of Redemption, is led to abjure its past sins, to do penance for them, and to begin in earnest the practice of virtue. As the soul grows in the knowledge and love of the Divine Blood and advances to the illuminative way, it yearns to imitate the virtues manifested in the bloodsheddings of Christ: obedience, humility, resignation to God's will, abiding love for God and neighbor. Progressing still further under the sanctifying influence of the Eucharistic Drink, the soul gradually attains to that sacrificial love for God characteristic of a Theresa: Aut pati, aut mori. It is led to cry out in the words of Gaspar, "Jesus has given us His Blood even to the last drop. What is there left to do? Jesus is a victim. Behold I am ready, O my God, to be a victim of love!"
