My Journey with Fashion has been .. long

Starting from my parents not letting me dress how I wanted, being stuck in uniforms throughout my childhood, then even dealing with sexuality and gender identity. Fashion has been something I’ve had little to no relationship with.

Even when I was free from uniforms, I was still too nervous to explore how I actually wanted to dress, or wanted to look like - so I dressed in what I deemed safe.

I didn’t step out until I was 19. I grew enough courage and distance from my parents to explore my identity, to explore what I liked.

✭ What counts as 'non-conforming'? ✭

When I'm talking about non-conforming communities, I can really mean any collection of people that aren't perceived as the societal norm, at least by the standards of 'Western society'. This includes communities relating to:

LGBTQ+, MOGAI, etc

Alterhumanity and otherkin

Neurodivergence, disability, and plurality

Age/pet/object regression

Non-conforming adult-only spaces (of which will not be discussed here)

Other communities that form surrounding a shared non-normative ideology (shipping discourse, transid/para, blankqueer, -inclus labels, kin for fun)

I'll also be talking about how these communities mix with others and with things like fandom/internet culture, as well as community references/jokes, shared values/beliefs, and common discourses within those communities

They say that one of the things you need to do in order to re-wire your brain and callous your mind is do shit you don't like or just straight up hate.

Believe it or not, apart from applying for jobs I feel anxious at, keeping my room clean, taking cold showers first thing in the morning and doing light workouts (not out of laziness, but because of an untreated adductor tendinopathy I'm still dealing with that gives me trouble if I push myself too hard physically), I've decided to, for the first time in my life, listen to a Taylor Swift album in its entirety.

I know, you're probably thinking some shit like "but that's not even hard, everybody loves Taylor Swift". Not me. I've always been a mainly grunge/alt-rock/hip-hop guy throughout my life. Being a Kanye fan didn't help either. And I've always "hated" and disregarded Swift's music as some plastic pop bullshit only 14 year-old girls whose toughest experience in life was not getting the newest iPhone like, out of an unfounded, imbecilic sense of superiority that I was way too fucking good to listen to her music.

Oh well, here we are now. I picked evermore just because I saw in an astrology post that that's the one Taurus is related to (yeah, I also take interest in astrology regardless of not taking it too seriously and mostly just for fun, sue me).

Not gonna lie, there are a couple of songs in there I've genuinely liked so far. If only 2016 Me could see me right now he'd probably be either hiding out of shame or laughing his fucking ass off, but fuck that guy, he's the reason I'm such a fucking mess right now.

tbh I think that the worst thing that has happened to me concerning my butchness/being gnc is not having it being ignored, but unseen

I'll elaborate better: I go out with my closest friends and I know it's acknowledged, even if it isn't explicitly stated (like to the flea market they show me "masculine" shirts they find without a second thought, or we discuss formal clothes for particular occasions), which is obviously the best scenario. I hang out with acquaintances and friends and it's not relevant, ever, because simply they don't care, and that's great because I don't have to feel weird about it or judged. but it's happened to me before that people looked me in the eyes and went "oh, I'm fine with gay people. as long as they aren't flaunting it", "no I don't have a problem with homosexuality, but I am bothered when they act like the other sex, like guys who wear make up and skirts or women who are really masculine, hang out with boys and curse like sailors" completely serious as if they simply could not see me
