We just started our new campaign-- this one is old western-themed!! From left to right, we have: Josie Hayes (my PC) the half-elf warlock, Bon (NPC) the satyr fighter, Lyric (Mia's PC) the changeling human bard, and Thistle (Jake's PC) the fairy gunslinger. These four idiots were chosen by the gods to go investigate a new god, so we'll see how that goes!! +Individual references under the cut to show off their extra details
I'd pay good money to talk to the makers of Laramie (1959-1963). They wrote a show about two roommate cowboys who, completely on free will, legally adopt a child.
I'm sure Mike was supposed to fill (Slim's brother) Andy's absence, but their dynamic with him is totally different from Andy. Wikipedia describes Mike as "an orphan allowed to live on the farm," but he's not just "allowed" to live there...They sign adoption papers. They're his PARENTS. They hire a nanny!
Also, according to IMDB, Laramie was the only western show of the time where the characters are seen doing actual chores and realistic upkeep of their farm.
What were the writers/directors going for? Did they know how homosexually domestic it would come across?
Did they cast specifically for actors with unique physical chemistry? Or was this just a stroke of luck?
Were they intending to spit in the face of the rampant toxic masculinity of their era? Feel free to share your thoughts. I could talk about this all day.
Give me old western, run away, saloon girl Beth meets most wanted Dixon brothers.
Preferably with a big number scene using ‘Fancy’ by Reba McEntire, specifically the Dave Aude remix. Or at least use it for inspiration. I’ve listened to it 12 times while vividly daydreaming.
Ah! how strange it is to come back to a place I frequented in my early twenties.
I know this is a long shot as no one really likes to read blogs anymore. But I'm hoping to find the few of you who still enjoy it. This is as much for me as it is for socializing with others about the same interest. I need a space to dump all my ideas-- my love for cinema, books, vintage and all things kitschy.
I spent all night obsessing over this idea and could not wait to start it. But when I woke up, I realized I had a heap of chores to get done, before sitting down and starting this. I ended up rearranging my furniture around in my bedroom and I'm pretty happy with it for the time being. See, I have this thing; I love to rearrange my furniture around every few months. It makes me feel like I have a whole new place. I most likely learned it from my mother since she is the same way. My husband thinks it's funny and my kids like it.
Music:
What I am currently listening to
I love Marty Robbins ("The boy with the teardrop in his voice").
I guess I should clarify; I love the Gunfighter Ballads album. My favorite song from the album is "They're Hanging Me Tonight" What a song! What a voice! It was during covid when I first discovered his music. I am hanging on to hope that Orville Peck will one day cover this song.
Can you believe this cowboy singer was also a NASCAR driver!? I guess it makes sense-- It's very "American" ha!!
I'll sign off with this photo of the badass Pearl Hart. The Wests' last bandit. This girl cross-dressed as a man to throw off the police. Of course she was later found out and caused quite a stir in the media. You might have heard her famous quote "I shall never submit to be tried under the law that neither I nor my sex had a voice in making."
What a statement! Crazy that we are still having this very same conversation when it comes to women's rights. If you want to know more about her you should read Wildcat: The Untold Story of Pearl Hart, the Wild West's Most Notorious Woman Bandit (which is how I heard of her)
And also the podcast My Favorite Murder did an episode on her.
In a scene removed for unknown reasons from the STARZ collection, Jess Harper talks about the fate of the majority of the Harper family at the hands of the outlaw Banister when Jess was only 15.
A few scenes were removed from this episode, I'm assuming to create a more cohesive storyline that focused on Men of Defiance more than Laramie. I might post others if anyone is interested.
The other day I was absent-mindedly watching TV whilst waiting for my mum so we could go out and there was this old cowboy show and I was just. Staring at this guy's wife. Thinking that she was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen on earth. Like, with full on heart eyes. And the dumbass smile.
She was average, but also so so so beautiful and stunning and I just... I couldn't take my eyes off her. I fell in love with an actress who's probably dead or very old by now. Wow.
