CHRISTMAS EVE, 2018

The snow drifted down over the streets of Tokyo like filler in a snow globe.

Giyuu had always liked the snow — he liked the quiet it brought, the way it seemed to illuminate even the darkest corners with its soft glow.

But he knew, deep in his heart, that the time to let her live and exist peacefully was quickly coming to an end, and that he would have to become a stain on her life once more.

A mixture of anxious excitement tugged at his gut. What did she look like, in this final life? She’d always been beautiful — no matter how she looked in any of her past lives, Giyuu always thought she was the greatest beauty ever to Grace the era. He was sure this time would be no different.

More importantly, what would she think of him? She hadn’t been particularly fond of him in her last life — she’d had the same general attitude towards him as Muichiro: utter indifference.

Across the street, a door to a small restaurant dinged open, and a group of friends spilled out onto the sidewalk, cheeks flushed and smiles warm from laughing as they talked animatedly with one another. The girl up front turned her head around to face the street, her eyes sweeping the pavement to ensure the group wasn’t about to barrel into any unsuspecting pedestrians, when she landed on him.

Giyuu’s breath lodged in his throat as his eyes blew wide.

Somehow, in a city with millions of people, she’d managed to find him, even if she did not know there was anyone to find.

Because one look at her, and suddenly it was 1121 and not 2018.

Made it to chapter 16 today which means Feyre and I have both had our first impressions of Rhysand's Inner Circle and ohhhhhhh boy

Its hard to pinpoint why exactly, but theres something so discomforting about watching them interact. I think the main thing is that for all their "casual-ness", theres still clearly a rigid hierarchy between them and they all seem to 'know their place' so to speak, its not at all like Lucien and Tamlin's relationship in the first book which genuinely felt like a friendship that was unburdened by their status or positions. Like, theres this one moment where Mor and Amren are like kinda bickering with each other i guess, and Feyre remarks that Mor is probably super powerful if she dares talk back against Amren (in an incredibly minor matter Im pretty sure but I already forgor ngl) and because this is the book where Feyre's perspective starts being Objectively Correct all the time, I guess that's true, I guess the only reason someone would dare voice their opinion on something to this friend group is if they were physically more powerful because otherwise you just level a fucking mountain during an argument

Anyway, Im gonna switch topics for a short moment but I promise this diversion is relavant to the point above. So, sometimes when I go into the anti-tags on here looking for criticisms or complaints of the books, I instead find anti-ship posts that are mainly just about trash-talking some ship, mostly ones relating to that whole Elucien/Elriel/Gwynriel shipwar, which I already have thoughts on but I'll save those for later. In any case, one day I stumbled upon this pretty long anti-elriel post about how the gifts Elain gives Azriel on winter solstice arent actually cute and it describes how she gave him like, herbs that help with headaches "because his friends are always giving him headaches" apparently. And then that post went on a whole rant about how insensitive that was of her and that she doesnt actually understand Azriel's dynamic with his close friends, but honestly, judging from this chapter Elain was absolutely spot on

And I usually wouldn't say this because yknow, its only one chapter and we're probably gonna get the nuances of their relationship later, but this is a book written by Sarah J Maas, her characters and their relationships are rarely particularly deep and, more importantly, her writing is incredibly unsubtle. If Azriel was in any way fond of his friends shenaningans I wouldve noticed it, because Feyre wouldve noticed it like 15 times during that whole dinner. But she didnt.

Its especially bad for Cassian and Azriel because it feels like Cassian thinks they have this great rapport but Azriel just genuinely kinda dislikes him. Not to mention that whole fucking mess with Azriel and Mor and Cassian and Mor having sex so she wouldnt get married off or whatever, good god how is every conversation between them not insanely awkward

Even beyond that, idk man, theyre all just so insufferable. I dont understand how Amren, ancient eldritch being trapped in a fae body that she is, can stand to be around them, I wouldve left them 5 centuries ago if I was her. I guess the explanation is that she finds the government position interesting but its like, youre SECOND to the most boring and annoying man on the planet only kinda ruling over a court that you dont even actually care about from everything Ive heard. Again, if I was in Amren's position I would not be hanging out in an APARTMENT in a boring ass city at the behest of a quartett of stupid bozos, I wouldve weaseled my way into being the personal advisor of Beron or some shit so I could watch the Vanserra Family Drama unfold live

There was one good thing about this discomforting dinner though, and that was how inexplicably gay Cassian was for Rhysand. He was really out there, looking at him with such love, calling him pretty twice in like two minutes being all "I knew I wanted a piece of him the moment I first saw him, the high lord's pretty son" like okay. You’d built up a small barricade for yourself in the park, snow piled high and sturdy enough that you could take cover behind it. For a moment, he panted, and looked up to you with a soft thanks. “I saw Seungmin and Jeongin further away. If we take down Hyunjin quickly and bring him back, they won’t spot us.”

Minho frowned, thinking over the idea. “It’s risky, but…” He looked up at the two of you, “I can distract them while you bring Hyunjin back here. We’ll decide who stays with him once we take him prisoner.”

You craned your neck up, looking out to where Felix had disappeared—presumably with Chris, too, since you couldn’t spot his jacket anymore. Minho laid out the plan: he’d go until he could see Seungmin and Jeongin, and signal you and Jisung to go after Hyunjin once he caught sight of them. Everyone knew Minho has the biggest threat of the entire group, and therefore they’d go after Minho first. With the plan set, the three of you set off, moving through the trees as you spotted Hyunjin just standing in the middle of the snow. He’d bent down to gather another snowball, and you glanced at Jisung with a firm nod. The two of you could handle anything, including Hyunjin.

Minho edged forward little by little. The moment you saw him give a signal, the two of you took off.

“Hyunjin! I’ll protect you!”

Except Changbin barreled out of the trees with a yell, startling Hyunjin as he jolted up. You saw him immediately move to take off, only for Changbin to tackle him into the snow. Before you or Jisung could turn back, Seungmin and Jeongin had rushed out from where they’d taken cover. Logically, you should have focused on getting out of there and regrouping with Minho and Jisung. Except for the fact that during the last road trip you took with Jisung, Seungmin, and Jeongin… only one of them ate the rest of your fries while you were driving, and that meant death.

You’d already scooped up snow, compacting it as you planned to get revenge on Seungmin. Only to see that he’d set his sights on Jisung instead. Sure, you two could probably dust the snow off and get back into the fray… but you liked admiring Jisung for a moment instead. The two of you were only officially out of the game if you were taken captive, and Seungmin must have not cared enough to drag you two back to his team’s base. When you looked back at Changbin, you watched as Hyunjin lead him away by the hand, no doubt taking him hostage… although Changbin seemed completely fine with that, loudly saying something about how Hyunjin could just let him go and they could have a secret alliance.

You turned back to Jisung, who was smiling at you. You curled your gloved hand around his. “Hey?”

“Thank you for sacrificing yourself for me,” he giggled. “My hero.”

It earned a snort from you as you crawled over, stealing a kiss from him. “Anything for my Jisungie,” you giggled, too. “We could go find Seungmin and get revenge.”

Only Friends: "Hot Take - Do Not Fuck Your Boss"

Credit to @chalkrevelations for the title, that part of your post made me giggle and pointed out an undercurrent of a theme that's running far in the background of the show.

Hot Take: DO NOT FUCK YOUR BOSS

We actually see this concept in four pairings on the show (sort of).

Starting with Sand and Ray (yeah, they did start as an employee/employer relationship). Ray was paying Sand to hang out with him. He paid Sand to drive him home that one time. Now, since episode two, when they slept together, based on Sand's "If I like you, I'll do it for free" line (paraphrasing), we can assume that Ray is no longer/hasn't paid him since. Essentially though, Sand fucked his boss and now look where he is. Ray still thinks he owns him, that Sand is a possession.

They've explored this with Top and Mew, too. Technically, the Fab Four are/were Top's bosses. They employed him (and are/were presumably paying him) to redesign the hostel for them. Top ends up sleeping with two of his bosses (Mew and Boston). He's actually manipulated into sex by his boss (Boston) and when the news gets out, Mew and Ray essentially fire Top. Boston, as one of the bosses, is loosely exiled from the group but not the project. In episode three, Plug and Yo talk about Plug being at the bar so much because he's a bartender. In episode 8, Plug says that Yo flirted with him for like a month before they got together. What that says to me is, Yo hired this guy has a bartender, thought he was cute and proceeded to PERSUE HER EMPLOYEE. Now, they're broken up. Does that mean Plug no longer has a job? Is Yo out an employee as well as a boyfriend?

It's an interesting exploration of power dynamics that a lot of shows, even ones that are office/work based BLs, don't quite seem to focus on the bad outcomes of. It's literally saying this is a bad thing, it can mess up your life.

Dream Journal Time

A world heavily controlled by powerful young magic users and elites, who were filtered out every few years. It was a very corrupt system that valued totalitarianism. The society was heavily focused on training children from a young age and assigning them societal duties when they either proved themselves or didn't. I thought of myself as one of the best. I was heavily indoctrinated and very skilled in physical activities. Things began to start after I overheard my upperclass friend group talking about one of the middle-class boys, Freddy, who was assigned a low and disgraceful position. The boys told me he started to cry after this and everyone laughed. I didn't think too much of it, but I had known him better than the other boys so I chose to try and find him. I found him crying in the back of an old storage unit and when I approached I could tell something was off about his behavior. No normal boy would hide away from the watchful eyes of the order, and so I immediately assumed he was a traitor. A peace-keeper member of the order showed up and assumed we both were conspiring. He took us away in a careless attempt to murder us, but me, Freddy, and a few other children were able to escape.

Then some things about a Mafia and other things came up but I can't recall all of it. Some time traveling too.

Eventually though, I was able to outgrow my taught beliefs. Wild dream ngl.

Sunny and Basil are best friends! They're shown to be very close to each other, closer than they are to the rest of their friends. They rely on each other to listen when they need to vent, and like to read books together! Before the events of the game, Sunny and Basil become involved in an incident that basically tears their friend group apart. Basil keeps the secret of their involvement from everyone because he cares too much about Sunny to let him get in trouble. They then don't talk for four years, and spend the entire time pining for each other!

Basil hopes for four years that Sunny will finally come back to him, meanwhile Sunny has retreated into a perfect dreamworld he uses to cope. All of his friends are there, and everyone is happy, and the dreamworld is full of things Basil loves. The most common food item is tofu(Basil's favorite food), there's an entire race of plant creatures that adore tofu(Basil likes to garden + his favorite food), his garden in the dreamworld is huge and has lots of flowers that represent each of his friends! Also, an important NPC says this abt Sunny and Basil's relationship: "He is special to you. A string of fate ties you together." A string of fate you say? Hmmm, I wonder why they phrased it like that...

Also, when Sunny and Basil finally do start talking again, Basil says stuff like this: "W...Wait... P-Please, SUNNY... Don't leave me... Not again..." "After all this time... you've finally come back for me. But... tomorrow... you're going away. H-HOW COULD YOU DO THAT!?!? That's mean, SUNNY. That's so mean!" Yeah... he's not doing too well...

But don't worry! After a year or two of therapy I'm sure these two can have a happy, healthy relationship!

Obviously I have a lot more to say abt them but it's all literary analysis and context clues and stuff, I just wanted to point out the more obvious stuff!
