In light of discovering that today is Bi Visibility Day I just wanted to chuck out a couple of book recommendations in case anyone is looking for some bi rep in their TBR

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

- let's get the big one out of the way first. The book follows Evelyn Hugo, one of Hollywood's most famous actresses for more than half a century, as she tells her incredible life story to an up and coming young reporter... with the big question being - with seven husbands to choose from, who was the true love of Evelyn's life? I flew through this book y'all, its not even a genre I generally read but I genuinely couldn't put it down lol.

Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender

- We follow our boy Felix as he seeks out love and his place in a world he feels marginalised from. Being black, queer, trans, and desperate for his first love, he finds himself in a complicated web of unhealthy relationships and poor choices as he enacts his plan for revenge on his online abusers. Not gonna lie, this was a haaaard read for me. You just want Felix to be happy and watching him go through the ringer and make some terrible choices along the way is a trial lol. I would highly recommend seeking out the trigger warnings for anyone who has issues with identity, from dead naming to catfishing, this book has a lot of hurt in it.

Ghost Wood Song by Erica Waters

- a YA southern gothic that follows our girl Shady Grove. Sad, poor, and desperately in love with her best friend, all Shady wants to do is play her music, but when her brother is accused of murder she believes the only way to prove his innocence is to use her music to call up the ghosts to learn the truth, just like her daddy used to, as she follows him down the path that may have led him to his early grave. Absolutely chock full of bi pining.

Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson

- the story of Constanta, Dracula's first wife. What happens when the person you love is capable of terrible things, and where will you find comfort? It's only 250 pages, it's a dreamy and atmospheric story about obsession and finding yourself and everyone is bi. Excellent times to be had by everyone.

The Last True Poets of the Sea by Julia Drake

- we follow our girl Violet as she's sent to stay with her uncle after her younger brother's attempted suicide. Wracked with complicated guilt and grief, and at a crossroads between who she was and who she wants to be, she finds herself a group of friends who help her along her path of self-discovery as she becomes fixated on the idea of solving a centuries old family mystery. Just a lovely book that left me all misty-eyed in places, and it has an *actual* love triangle rather than just having two love interests which is shockingly rare lol

Holy shit Sinbad turns 20 next month

I definitely need to make something for it, it was the last 2D animated American movie I saw in theaters (that wasn't a re-release [hi Iron Giant]) and it's a movie that is, personally, really important to me. I need to honor it for it's big 20th because I doubt anyone else will.

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy - Mackenzi Lee (wlw, the sequel to the one before, more fantasy elements than the first, asexual main character!!)

Gallant - V.E. Schwab (no romance, but in the background one of the characters(?) uses they/them pronouns, very cool dark fantasy vibe)

Stranger Than Fanfiction - Chris Colfer (gay main character, trans main character, coming-of-age, nice book)

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (yes it's the Love, Simon book, mlm, fiction, pretty nice)

They Both Die At The End - Adam Silvera (mlm, sci-fi ish but mostly fiction, cool ideas, but the ending is sad! Very amazing book though, I haven't read the prequel yet)

One Last Stop - Casey McQuinston (wlw, background trans & pan & queer characters, sci-fi or fantasy idk, but time travel, I loooved this book, great)

The House In The Cerulean Sea - TJ Klune (mlm, fantasy, THIS BOOK oh my gosh you should read it!!, just cute and lovely and good)

Under The Whispering Door - TJ Klune (mlm, fantasy, this book is also sooo amazing, great character development and awesome relationships and stuff, it's been a while since I read it but it was so good)

And They Lived... - Steven Salvatore (nblm, fiction, about gender identity and learning to love yourself, read it a while ago but it was very nice)

Carry On - Rainbow Rowell (mlm, background wlw in the third book, fantasy, it's a trilogy, basically Harry Potter if it was gay and also better)

Silver In The Wood - Emily Tesh (mlm, fantasy, very pretty, lots of fae stuff and lovely descriptions, it has a really good sequel too)

Pretty much anything by Alice Oseman (all cute and lovely and great, though I've only read Radio Silence so far I hear only good things, Solitaire is on my to-read list)

I Kissed Shara Wheeler - Casey McQuinston (wlw, fiction, it's been a while but I liked this book)

The Falling In Love Montage - Ciara Smyth (wlw, fiction, this book was so cute and funny and deeply emotional it made me Feel way too many things, I'd definitely recommend it)

What Big Teeth - Rose Szabo (a bit of queerness all around, fantasy, werewolves and monsters, this one was pretty cool!, lots of original ideas for the world/character building)

Keep in mind, at that time it would have been social and career suicide to admit such things, but its the small gestures that convince me.

My Percy Jackson headcanons/rewrite

Percy's a femme trans woman who's strong admiration for the other female characters is half fueled by gender envy and her type of femmeness is very distinctively tgirl.She's pastel punk,has zero tolerance for 'boys being boys' and physically transitioning(via Persephone gifting her Metamorphose,food that's been blessed by Aphrodite to give the eater their ideal apperance)boosted her self-confidence big time and she was into skating as a little kid but gave it up as the trauma set it as she grew up but got back into it as part of her healing journey.Sally is the most supportive mom any trans person could ever ask for and Thalia is the reason she went punk thanks to her being transfem too and helping her settle into her gender and she chose the middle name 'Amelia' so they could match(And her full first name was changed to Persephone as a thank you to the og)

She's bi but dosen't wanna date and wants to just vibe instead

Sharks and cats are her comfort animals

She's autistic and her special interests are blue,video games and kidcore,she has meowing as a vocal stim(insert catgirl joke here),she loves legos to the ends of multiple dimensions,her safe foods are blue food and McDonalds,she almost never stutters when she infodumps no matter for how long and she never once thought she could be autistic despite the unbelivably obvious symptoms because she dosen't fall under any stereotypes

She hates Poseidon and once held Riptide to his crotch for trying to get mushy with her

Was almost a Special Ed kid but Sally convinced the teachers to not put her in it after Percy had a meltdown over her mentioning the posibility of it due to how bad her internalized ableism was already.She regrets it to this day,mourning the friends she could've made

She's scared of older men because of Luke and he was never the hero of the prophecy,it was always her,and she was the one to kill him to avenge everyone,including herself,and save the world

Nico's crush on her faded when his own transness made him realize she is too and they spent the year between BOTL and TLO becoming found siblings and they help eachother with their hair(he's black too)and he's the one who got her addicted to McDonalds and she introduced him to Mcr and him to her Animal Crossing but everybody thinks it's the other way around.Persephone asked them to ressurect Hazel because she'd be one of the best choice's for the Seven and she helped her settle into her new world and taught both of them how to skate and now they call themselves 'The Dead Sea Siblings'

She's built like a DC Comics heroine back when they knew how to draw women most of the time-That is to say,curvy and busty but also thick in build with strong muscles so it's realistic

Was almost viciously protective of Tyson when everyone started bullying him for being a Cyclops and showered him in hugs and kisses when he cried about their treatment

Thalia gave her a pastel blue patches jacket which has the trans and dominican flags and a mermaid to represent Sally and her loved ones gifted her an assortment of different pins

She's an eldest daughter without eldest daughter syndrome because Sally knows how to parent and a Team Mom because she was raised by the mom of all time

The gods call her 'Young Persephone'

She was a Cartoon Network and Nickeloden kid who's faves were always Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Blues Clues and she had no clue what the hype around Zuko crushing was but finds him peak relatability now

Her favorite Disney Princesses are Tiana and Brandy's Cinderella and she thinks the Ariel jokes the Stolls make about her are annoying as shit

Her gray streak faded to white so she dyes it sea blue to not raise suspicioun in the mortal world

She loves indie media,be it comics or shows or games

Her and Rachel are the definition of 'Girl Best Friends' but unironically.They have matching friendship bracelets with eachother's names on them,hang out at the mall,Rachel spoils her with her dad's money,Sally thinks of her as a third daughter,Percy brings her trinkets she finds and they go to protests and do charity work together

She never goes to college and instead just becomes a McDonalds employee to give her little siblings special priviliges because school is too hard for her and she's okay with that by then

She owns a pair of blue strawberry earrings with pastel pink leaves

Persephone and Sally fall in love over the course of Persephone's visits to her in Hoo to check up on how she was doing without Percy and this culminates in her plan to kill Hades succeeding and becoming the solo ruler of the Underworld with Sally as her consort and wife.Percy is now a junior and her,Nico and Hazel are siblings squared

Her,the rest of the Seven,Grover,Thalia,Clarisse,Nico and Reyna are known as 'The Second Argonauts'

Ibn al Qayyim رَحِمَ اللهُ عَلَيْهِ said,

“A girl died of the plague and her father saw her in his dream. He said, ‘my daughter, tell me about the hereafter. So she said, 'We’ve approached a serious matter. We used to know but we didn’t act. I swear by Allah, to add one tasbeehah (saying Subhan Allah) or a single Rak'ah to my book of deeds is more beloved to me than the whole world and everything in it.’

This girl said words of great importance. 'We used to know but we didn’t act’, but many of us don’t understand what she means.

We used to know, that if we say Subhan Allah wa bi Hamdihi 100 times our sins are forgiven even if they’re like the foam of the sea (yet days and nights pass and we don’t say it)

We used to know that two rak'ahs of Duha prayer is the equivalent of giving 360 charities (yet day after day pass and we don’t pray it)

We used to know that a house in the middle of Jannah is guaranteed for one who abandons lying even while joking (yet every second sentence we utter is a lie)

We used to know that fasting a day voluntarily for the sake of Allah puts a distance between our face and the fire the size of seven trenches and Allah distances our face from the fire the distance travelled in 70 years, (and we haven’t fasted single day this week)

We used to know that whoever visits a sick person is followed by 70,000 angels seeking Allah’s forgiveness on his behalf (but we haven’t visited a sick person this week)

We used to know that whoever prayed a funeral prayer and followed it till it was burried has two Qiraats of reward and a Qiraat is like the mountain of Uhud (yet weeks pass and we haven’t been to the graveyard.)

We used to know that whoever builds a mosque even if it’s like a bird’s nest Allah builds a house for them in paradise (yet we haven’t contributed to the building of a Masjid, even with 10 dinars)

We used to know that the one who supports the widow and her children is like the fighter in the path of Allah and the one who fasts all day and prays all night without sleeping. (Yet we haven’t contributed to sponsoring a widow and her children)

We used to know that whoever reads a single letter from the Quran has a good deed and every deed is multiplied by 10. Yet we haven’t made a point to read it every day.

We used to know that an accepted Hajj has the reward of jannah and it sends the person who completed it off like the day his mother gave birth to him. (With a clean book of deeds) yet we haven’t performed the rites of Hajj although our circumstances have made it easy for us.

We knew the honor of a believer is in Qiyam Al-layl, and that the Prophet (pbuh) and his companions never missed it all their lives despite being busy with making a living and fighting in the path of Allah and spreading the religion. But we have neglected this matter terribly.

We knew the Day of Judgment was coming without a doubt and that Allah will resurrect us from our graves but we haven’t prepared for that day.

We used to bury the deceased and pray over them but haven’t prepared ourselves for a day like this one, as if we have a guarantee that it won’t happen to us.

We know that every breath we breathe is getting us closer to death yet we’re still busy with amusement and playing. It’s time we change the way we’re living and prepare properly for the day of accounting.

Honestly, as a writer I've noticed how this weird "we're gonna rebrand you character" thing has also been going on with clearly labelled characters. I mean, you will have openly stated BI characters be claimed as lesbian. I personally have a few gay/bi male characters, and several people just tell ME the AUTHOR that they're actually trans. I've also had clear trans characters, mostly my trans men characters, labelled as BUTCH LESBIANS?? You can't even blame that on translation and localisations.

I think it can be argued that the current translation/localization problem can be tracked back to people like you've described, i.e.: people who think they know characters better than a creator and feel entitled to re-label them or rewrite them to 'fit better'.

Hell, I was skimming through some tweets about the recent Persona re-release announcement and most of them were bemoaning the reveal of who's going to be in charge of translation/localization. Her name escapes me but the main screencaps from her that stood out in my mind were her whinging about the recent Seven Seas 'let's turn a crossdressing cis guy into a transwoman' debacle with "I know the translator and they did their homework with reading future volumes and consulting trans people to make it as accurate as possible~!"

Which just makes me want to ask her "Alright, bet. Did they consult the ACTUAL?! FUCKING?! AUTHOR?!"

And her whining about how she wishes that Japanese people would remove a certain phrase from their collective vocabulary.

The phrase, of course, more or less translating to 'unmarriable woman', which I'm pretty sure has been hurled her way more than a few times with her shenanigans.

I just... And this also goes for people who make 'adaptations' of foreign media... Wish with all of my being that these people would realize that their jobs aren't to rewrite things, just translate them into another language/media.

Just because they're also the people who try to step all over authorial cadence doesn't mean that that responsibility should change.
