Tumblr media
You woke up to a pounding headache and dry throat. But with your friends around, you knew that you would end up drinking more than you can handle and make even more crazy decisions. Speaking of your friends.
Oh shit, what time was it?
The alarm clock on the side of your bed flashed 11:30am. You groaned, massaging your temples.
Well, so much for brunch at The Cosmopolitan.
In annoyance, you snatched your phone from the nightstand. Turning it on, you read a message from your best friend.
Sorry, hun! Was gonna wake you up but then we saw you snuggled up to that hottie from the club last night. Don’t worry, we’ll bring you something when we come back. Have fun with your man 😘 Lmk if you need more of those XL condoms 😉
What the fuck was she-
Oh…
On the opposite side of the queen sized bed was a naked man, whose body looked like it was sculpted like Michaelangelo himself. Not to mention, red scratch marks trailed down his back as if a rabid animal attacked him. That couldn’t have been your doing…right?
He began to roll over, exposing his equally sculpted chest and abs that was littered in hickies and kiss marks. Your eyes widened when you realized the lip stains on his body matched the shade of your lipstick from last night. As you wiped the side of your mouth, your smeared lipstick appeared on your fingertips. Finally awake, the man stared at you, leaning against his propped arm. You tried not to stare at his bulging bicep, but he caught on as he smirked.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” the man slurred with a low, sexy morning voice that was richer than the coffee you craved to cure your hangover. His eyes scanned your bare torso, smirking as you quickly covered yourself.
“No need to be embarrassed, sweetheart,” he chuckled and you watched his chest rise and fall. “I already know you look beautiful naked.” Your cheeks heated up and you slowly let the blanket fall in your lap.
“I know I should care about the reason why you’re naked in my bed, but I will just enjoy it for a moment.”
The man laughed again. “Well you and I got pretty drunk last night and I guess one thing led to another…”
Now your memories were coming back to you. You and your friends went club hopping on the strip, and you met the guy in bed with you on the bus ride there. While you were still sober, you and he chatted over how you were in Vegas for your friend’s birthday, and he was there to get over some family issues he dealt with in the past month.
By the time you got to the club, he paid for you and your friends' drinks. You basically left both of your groups to dance with each other but would still follow each other on each ride to the different clubs. At the end of the night, you and he went back to your room while both of your friend groups stayed behind to find a place to eat. The rest of the night with him was still a blur but it was pretty clear that you both slept with each other. Only thing was, you forgot his name.
“I’m sorry,” you started, “but can you remind me of your name please?”
“Don’t sweat it. It’s Shangqi.” You nodded and then gave him your name.
“I remember your name, sweetheart.” Shangqi smiled. “Surprised you forgot mine when you were screaming it all night long.”
You clenched your jaw as you grew wet between your legs. The urge to pounce on him was strong, especially with the way he stretched across the bed. Your gaze automatically landed on his groin that hid underneath the bed sheet.
“I’ll take it that you like what you see,” Shangqi teased once he caught you staring. You curled your lips inward as your face warmed up. He decided to change the subject to spare you of your embarrassment.
“Got any plans for today?” Shangqi asked.
“I was supposed to go to brunch with my friends but seeing that they found us sleeping together, they decided it was best to leave me behind.” Shangqi gave you an apologetic look, feeling bad that he kept you from your friends. You reassured him, “Don’t worry though, I had a great time last night. I mean, I don’t remember everything that happened, but I know it was fun.”
“Yeah, we went through like 5 condoms last night.” He picked up an opened condom packet, causing your breath to hitch when you realized it was a gold XL packet like your friend mentioned in the text.
You huffed out a flustered breath. “Wow, I guess there is a lot more that I don’t remember from last night.”
Shangqi’s next words turned you into a puddle. “Want me to jog your memory, sweetheart?”
You bit your lip as your thighs rubbed together to ease the growing need in your core. God, this man made it extremely impossible to resist him. “Yeah, help me remember every single detail.”

i’ll be getting over you my whole life (teenage!shang-chi x fem!reader)
A little thing, because I was inspired and I have a newfound love after watching Shang-chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings again. Also, I realize there aren’t enough fics for this guy. Maybe a part two soon xo
+++
There is a weight that you have to learn to live with when you eat and sleep, and if you’re a boy, train, at the Ten Rings compound.
It’s something you discover your mind only has the capacity to form around so you bend and don’t break.
He pulled you aside just a moment before, but it wasn’t to say anything. In the shadowed, open-air hall that lines the outside courtyard, he stands opposite of you.
This is a new, soft thing, and those are hard to find as deep and high in the mountains as you both are in this compound, so he doesn’t touch you. Not at first. His face gives away nothing, but you’ve been learning how to read his eyes. They hold the depths of all that he is holding but doesn’t speak about.
If your mother was here, she might roll her eyes at the way you think about him. The way you act as if you are beyond the age of 14 (though in some ways, you are). She would tell you, from the wisdom of experience, that you should be careful. That the pain that came from first love as a teenager wasn’t always worth it. That there were more important things to focus on.
Shang-qi’s touch is tender as he leans forward and slowly takes your hand in his. It’s somewhat unfamiliar and awkward because you two haven’t had a lot of time, if any, to spend together. But there have been some sweet pockets, little moments, where his smile changes the whole course of your monotonous day. Stolen glances before training as you linger as long as you can in the courtyard before you are sent away. Whispers in the darkened hallway between his room and yours. Sitting across from each other at breakfast, before anyone else has arrived, early enough to watch the sunrise without interruption.
You both don’t understand much about dating, or love, but you understand that whatever this is between you needs to stay under the radar and private. You think you’ve done a good enough job to not alert anybody, especially Shang-qi’s father. He’s gone a lot anyway.
There’s a weight Shang-qi carrying tonight that he wasn’t carrying before. It’s in the set of his shoulders and his posture.
You hold his hand for a moment longer before releasing it.
Instead, your hands come to cup his face.
“Do what you must tonight.”
You let the silence surrounding you both echo your words as Shang-qi exhales. A small moment of vulnerability comes as he presses his forehead to yours. You close your eyes and soak in the feeling.
When you open your eyes and find Shang-qi gazing at you, you know. He won’t be making any promises to you tonight.
Your eyes begin to water but you swallow the tears into your throat and inhale. You take a second quick breath once you realize this is the closest his lips have come to yours.
You try to imprint this feeling into your mind so that when you remember this moment again, you can make it last as long as you can.
He cannot bear to stay goodbye, so he will not say anything at all.
“Go,” You take a step back, “Your last words should be to her.”
Xialing, his sister, waits on the steps a few feet in front of you. He gives you one last lingering look and then turns to sit with her. They talk only for a moment before the sound of helicopter blades echoes against the sides of the mountain and almost overwhelms the silence the compound is set in.
You can tell even from the distance that he says no words when Wenwu greets him. He only nods as he grabs his bag and walks away.
It will be fifteen years before you see him again.

Call Me Lover
Pairings: Xu Shang Chi x fem!Reader; Unspecified Male Avenger x Reader
Summary: Shang Chi is in love with his best friend but she is with someone else. He’s unsure if he’ll be able to keep a handle on his feelings for much longer. Based on Call Me Lover by Sam Fender.
A/N: Tried to be as vague as possible when describing the boyfriend so you can imagine one of your other Avenger faves. Please let me know who you pictured! I get curious about these things lol.
Tumblr media
You know I'll be down here waiting
I'll take you to see your man
A shiver sent its way down your spine as you and your best friend, Shang Chi left the movie theatre. He could see the goosebumps on your arms from the cool evening air and instinctively offered his jacket. You gladly accepted, putting the jacket on over your shoulders and inhaling the gorgeous scent of his cologne. He sighed contentedly at the sight you wearing his clothes and fell even harder for you.
It was a late night trip to see some forgettable movie. Your boyfriend was coming home from a mission that night and time had almost stopped completely as you had waited for him all afternoon. So you called up your best distraction, Shang-Chi with a request that you do absolutely anything to stop you from clock watching.
As soon as your name lit up on his phone, it didn’t matter what you were about to ask. Shang Chi was there. He was completely, hopelessly and desperately in love with you.
“It won’t be long now until he’s back!” You said excitedly, checking your phone.
Shang Chi’s heart had been fluttering all night in your presence but now it seemed to sink to the pit of his stomach with the mere mention of him. The man who had stole you away from him, the man you loved and the man who was a living, breathing reminder that you belonged to someone else.
“Yep.” Shang Chi shortly replied, popping the ‘P’. “Do you want me to drop you off at the compound?”
“Yes please.”
When you are done, we'll go driving
Catch the coast in the evening light
Shang Chi’s chest tightened as you hummed along to a sweet song on the drive there. Your leg bounced up and down excitedly in anticipation. Your boyfriend had been on this mission for two weeks but it had felt like an eternity waiting for him to come back. He would send sporadic updates that you tried your best not to sit around waiting for. Still, every time your phone made a sound, you had desperately grabbed for it in hopes it was him.
You’d passed the time with your best friend, seeing him almost everyday. Shang Chi obliged of course, he would do anything for you. Anything to have you all to himself without any distractions.
It was getting harder and harder for him to act natural around you. A few nights previous he’d driven you along the coastline before stopping to watch the sunset on the beach. Whilst you had fallen in love with the serene pink sky, he was staring at you and feeling his heart beat so hard it was fighting its way out of his chest. Now a pink sky reminded him of you and a moment that he’d reserve in a special place in his heart forever.
“I don’t know why, he’s literally my boyfriend but I’m very… nervous I guess? Just so excited to see him.” You babbled on to Shang Chi who concentrated all of his anguish into gripping the steering wheel with great force.
“I’m sure he’ll have missed you.” Shang Chi offered in response. It was all he could think of to say that would help him stay in character of the role he played of being the supportive friend. He knew if he had to go two weeks without seeing you that he would have been driven insane.
“Yeah well, I really missed him too. The bed is too cold without him.” You smiled at the thought of being engulfed in the arms of your love later while Shang Chi swallowed thickly. He would have been more than happy to keep you warm and safe at night.
Upon arrival at the compound, you realised you were still wearing Shang Chi’s jacket. It was like a continuous warm hug from your best friend, which you relished in due to the unforgiving chill in the air. However, it didn’t seem very appropriate to be wearing another man’s jacket to greet your boyfriend after two weeks apart, so you took it off.
“Here, honey,” you handed Shang Chi’s jacket back to him. “Thanks for letting me wear it, you always look out for me.”
“Always will.” Shang Chi mumbled in response, taking his jacket back. Fresh wounds opened up seeing you take his jacket off for his benefit. It made your best friend feel like you were discarding him in favour of your boyfriend.
When the plane landed and your boyfriend emerged, unscathed and forming a cheesy smile at the sight of you (which Shang Chi could only describe as insufferable) you ran up to him and threw your arms around his neck desperately. You didn’t leave an inch on his face un-kissed and he had wrapped his arms around your waist, pulling you as close to him as possible.
“Hey, beautiful.” He chuckled, rubbing your back soothingly with his hand.
“Hey, lover.” You said teasingly in between kisses, an inside joke between you both.
I love it when you call me, "Lover"
Ooh, lover
Hearing you call someone else “lover” was an assault on Shang Chi’s emotional state. It was agonising, like he was trapped in Room 101 and his personal torturer had selected this specifically knowing how much it was going to hurt.
Shang Chi had often slipped into a daydream where he imagined a world where you were his. You’d give him the beautiful doe eyes that you had reserved for your boyfriend. You’d hold on to his arm and kiss his cheek while you walked through the farmers market. The two of you would see old couples and lament on how that’s definitely going to be you when you’re older. Most importantly, you’d call him “lover”.
In his head, you would do all the things for him that he’s seen you do for your boyfriend. When Shang Chi wasn’t there, you’d talk about him to your friends with the same glee and cheesy grin with which you talk about your real lover.
Sometimes when you were together and you’d accidentally brush his arm or you hugged him or called him a cute pet name like “honey” or “sweetie”, it would send him into that utopia in his mind where you were his. A little grin would emerge on his face as he pictured a cute scenario of you both together until you would snap him out of it, laughing at how distracted and dazed he could be. The embarrassment would send sharp pains in his chest and stomach, being almost sure that you could see inside his brain and he had been exposed.
He even dreamed about you when he fell asleep at night and would wake up clutching his pillow so tight his fingers hurt. Then, he’d let out some soft cries into the pillow, wishing it was you he was holding on to instead.
Then he’d think about while he was desperate and crying for you, you were probably in the arms of your boyfriend and sleeping softly, without so much as a thought for Shang Chi.
She gives me those eyes when her man's in plain sight
Or am I just mistaken?
You appreciated the moment of having your boyfriend back in your arms, rubbing your thumb along his cheekbone and giving him gentle kisses as he told you just how much he’d missed you. After a while you took his hand and wandered back over to Shang Chi who stood awkwardly, as if waiting to be dismissed by you.
“Thanks for driving my girl up here, man. It’s a long drive back to the city, you’re more than welcome to stay here for the night.” Your boyfriend smiled at Shang Chi and gave him what was intended to be a friendly pat on the shoulder. Shang Chi frowned at the sight of that man’s hands on him and interpreted the act as being patronising. He was sure that your boyfriend knew just how helplessly in love with you that he was. Being with you was him stabbing Shang Chi in the side. Offering him a place to stay the night where there was a chance he’d hear your reunion sex was the knife being twisted.
But it was you that struck the most painful blow. You looked up at him through your lashes with those gorgeous doe eyes that Shang Chi had thought he’d never be on the receiving end of. You raised your eyebrow in anticipation of his response with a soft and inviting smile. You wanted him to stay.
Shang Chi stared at you in disbelief. You were clinging on to your boyfriend’s arm who you hadn’t stopped talking about all night but were giving him those eyes that he’d dreamed about. He cursed himself for having been so desperate to see them because now he had and he wasn’t allowed to reach forward and kiss you. It was his breaking point.
Enough was enough. He knew he had to start the process of self preservation before his heart broke completely.
“No thanks, I’m gonna head home.” Shang Chi replied grumpily and pushed past your boyfriend. It made you scowl, your best friend was never usually abrupt or rude like that. He was outgoing and gentle and cheerful. It set off alarm bells in your head as you followed him with your eyes.
“Well that was just plain weird.” Your boyfriend smirked. When he looked at your expression he could see just how shocked and stung you were at your best friend’s actions. You couldn’t offer an explanation or even an excuse for him and it bothered you. There was something clearly wrong and you hated the idea of being kept in the dark about it.
“I think I’m gonna go check on him. I won’t be long, baby.” You decided and kissed his cheek. He nodded in response and headed into the compound to relax and wait patiently for you to return and take your rightful place in his arms. You turned on your heel and set off after your best friend.
We will break under circumstance in the heat of it all
Can you take all the pressure that is left behind?
Shang Chi mentally berated himself on the way back to the car for having been so rude. He didn’t want to be and it honestly didn’t sit right with him, even if he did find your boyfriend extremely annoying. He had been kicked into touch and survival mode from all of those years of assassin training had taken over. Instincts were telling him he needed to get as far away from you as possible.
Unfortunately, you weren’t letting him get away so easily.
“Wait up! You’re not going anywhere until you explain what that was back there!” You shouted after him as you desperately tried to keep up with him. He took long and efficient strides forwards, knowing that if he could just get to the car, he could drive away and cry his eyes out in the safety of his own company.
“It’s nothing. Go back and see your man. He’s missed you.” He responded.
You managed to catch up and grabbed his arm, moving him to face you. You observed his agonised expression and the tears forming in his eyes, which worried you even more.
“Not until I know you’re okay.” You asserted. “I know you, remember? And I know that something has upset you. So, spill.”
Shang Chi hated to admit it but you were right. He couldn’t just change his behaviour and expect it to go unnoticed by you. You did know him, probably better than anyone - even more than Katy. It was futile trying to hide this from you anymore. It was time to be honest.
“I can’t do this anymore.” He sighed, looking down to avoid your gaze.
“Do what?”
“This. Me and you. I fucking… I love you okay? I love you. And seeing you with him, it really fucks me up because I wish it was me. I know this makes me such a shitty person because you have a boyfriend but I can’t do this anymore. I love you.”
The admission was a cathartic cocktail of painful yet relieved emotions. Finally, you knew and he didn’t have the burden of carrying around this heavy secret anymore. On the other hand, it risked losing you forever.
The confession of love had stunned you into silence. You desperately tried to achieve eye contact with him in search of a sign that he might be joking. You had no such luck; all you could find in his eyes was torment and hurt. He loved you.
“Sweetie, I don’t know what to say…” You began but were unable to finish. You put your brain to work to formulate a thoughtful response but no inspiration took hold. There was no way to make him feel better about this. You couldn’t make him promises or give him the romance movie moment of throwing caution to the wind and pulling him by his jacket for a deep kiss. You already belonged to someone else.
“It’s okay,” Shang Chi said, breaking the awkward silence. “We can talk about it another time but I need to get outta here.”
With that he kissed your forehead lightly and lingered for a second to savour the moment. Slowly, he leaned back and got into his car and took off. You were left standing there, feeling like you had been suffocated. You inhaled a few greedy gulps of air in an attempt to steady yourself and wondered how you would explain what had just happened to your boyfriend. Your brain was on standby as you stood rooted to your spot, trying to process what had just happened.
In the car, Shang Chi fought back furiously at the tears threatening to spill from his eyes. He tried to stifle the lump that was achingly stuck in his throat with the anxiety that he might have just destroyed your friendship. You were the most important person in his life and he had potentially just thrown all of that away. To put it bluntly: it hurt.
He found himself sink back into that unhealthy tendency of daydreaming about you again to avoid facing the severity of the situation at hand. Suddenly, his mind started to ease and his body relaxed.
He walked into his apartment on a bright Saturday morning. The light streamed in from the window to accentuate your beautiful frame as you lay in his bed waiting for him. Shang Chi set down the coffee and bagels he bought the two of you for breakfast and hovered over you to give you a deep and loving kiss.
“Hey, baby.” He smiled against your mouth before you pulled him down on to the bed with you.
“Hey, lover.”
I love it when you call me, "Lover"
Ooh, lover

As you bit into another Valentines chocolate, you sighed, staring out the window. You wanted to go out, but the city was crowded, busy with all the couples wandering around town.
You hated that the idea of walking around alone on Valentines Day made you feel bad, it shouldn't, there as nothing wrong with it, you knew that. But you couldn't seem to leave the house anyways.
It had been years since you last celebrated Valentines Day, and you had to admit, you kind of missed it. You liked that there was a holiday were you could be more romantic than normal, be more cheesy than normal, and it didn't come off as weird.
You didn't mind being single, but there were parts of being in a relationship that you missed. The dates, the inside-jokes, the intimacy.
Without meaning it to, you suddenly thought of Shang-Chi. You wondered what he was doing right now.
Did he have a date? No, he would have told you about that. Wouldn't he?
You felt your chest clench. Even if he did, you wouldn't want to hear about it.
When Valentines Day approached, you couldn't ignore the daydream of him finally asking you out. Confirming if he had feelings for you once and for all. Finally telling you if those times you caught him staring at you, or the jealousy he seemed to show when guys hit on you were all signs he had feelings for you.
But it was now Valentines Day, and he hadn't said a peep. He hadn't even brought it up at all.
Looking over at a set of drawers in your living room, you thought of the gift you bought him that was now shoved away in the drawer. You hoped you would be able to give it to him today, but it didn't seem like it was going to happen. You figured you'd save it, maybe until his birthday.
A few days before when you were with Shang-Chi, you tried to naturally bring up the topic of Valentines Day.
You were passing a flower shop and you pointed out all the flowers. Pointing to a guy buying yellow carnations.
"Yikes." You whispered out.
"What?" Shang-Chi asked.
"Yellow carnations, bad idea."
"Why?"
"They mean rejection and disappointment"
Shang-Chi looked back over at the man and frowned "Let's hope whoever he's buying them for doesn't know that."
You chuckled before pointing at yellow roses "Those are often meant as a symbol of friendship, but often mean infidelity and jealousy, and used to be used as a symbol of betrayal and separation. Wouldn't wanna buy those for your Valentine either."
He chuckled "How do you know all this?"
You shrugged "One of my first jobs in high-school was working part-time in a flower shop. I loved learning about all the secret meanings behind them."
He grinned at you and your heart fluttered. You loved when he looked at you like that.
Walking over to one of the flower-shop workers, you picked a single flower and bought it. Shang-Chi watched you with curiosity.
Walking back over to him, you handed him a sunflower.
He took it gently and met your eyes "What does this mean?"
You smiled "Friendship"
Though sunflowers could be associated with friendship. Their truer meaning was that of loyalty, adoration and pure love, but you didn't feel brave enough to say that.
You were shaken from your thoughts as you heard your doorbell ring. Humming in curiosity at the sudden visitor, you walked to the door and peaked through the peep-hole. Seeing Shang-Chi in the hall, you felt your heart skip a beat.
What was he doin here?
Opening the door, you tried to hide your surprise with a smile "Shang-Chi, hey!" You said cheerfully.
He grinned at you "Hey."
"What's up?"
He shrugged as he lifted up a bag from your favorite food-spot "I thought I might stop by to see if you were hungry."
Your chest was tight as butterflies raged through your stomach. "How do you always know when I'm hungry?" You joked.
He shrugged his head and smiled "Friend intuition."
As you stepped aside, Shang-Chi walked in and made his way to the kitchen. You watched him for a moment as you tried to steady your breath. You wondered if he remembered today was Valentines Day, or if it had slipped his mind entirely.
Taking out the food, you and Shang-Chi fell into a familiar pattern. Sitting across from each other at the kitchen island, dividing the food and talking about your day. But you noticed Shang-Chi had an odd demeanor around him. You watched him closely as he picked at his food.
Looking up he caught you and froze for a second "What?"
You set down your fork and stared at him for a moment "Something's wrong."
He sat up a bit as he looked around at the food "What, did I forget something?"
You shook your head "I mean with you, your all fidgety, like you can't sit still, what's going on?"
Shang-Chi opened his mouth as if to defend himself, but he paused before taking in a deep breath and letting it out. Tapping the kitchen island a few times, you watched as he stood up and made his way towards the door.
"Shang-Chi?" You asked as you stood up. Was he leaving? Did you do something to upset him?
Shang-Chi opened the door and stepped out, but left your door open. You stood still as you watched him round the corner before he appeared again. Your breath caught in your throat as he held a bouquet of flowers in his hands.
He seemed nervous as he closed the door and walked up to you. As he handed you the flowers, you were speechless.
Finally finding your words, you spoke softly, "What are these for?" You knew, but you need to hear it.
"Valentines Day."
You met his eyes, and everything you wanted to ask came out in only one word "Why?"
Slowly, he pointed out each type of flower and spoke softly "Light red carnations for affection, pink peonies for attraction and passion, and primrose...meaning 'I can't live without you', and-" he pointed to a single sunflower in the middle of the bouquet "-adoration and pure-"
"-love." You finished for him as you slowly met his eyes.
He shrugged his head softly as he smiled shyly "After you gave me that sunflower, I looked it up, I knew you had to know all the meanings. And I hoped, that- that it meant you felt the same as me. So, I spent all night researching various flowers and then all morning finding the right bouquet to give you."
You gently ran your fingers over the flowers "The same as you?" You said in a whisper. Did that mean, what you had hoped he felt, was right?
He tilted his head as he looked at you "Do you?" He asked, a subtle hint of fear in his voice.
You nodded your head as smile played at your lips "Yes."
His smile grew into a grin as you saw him relax a bit.
Suddenly remembering the gift you got him, you stood up straighter "Oh!"
Shang-Chi watched as you went over to the drawer and pulled something out. Bringing it over to him, you had suddenly become a bit more shy as you handed it to him.
"I saw this and thought of you."
He took it gently from you as he smiled, surprised that you had anything for him. Opening it, he saw a stone beaded bracelet in various colors.
"It's jade, tigers eye and onyx." You said softly.
He smiled as he lifted it up, feeling the smooth stones in his fingers. He met your eyes again "I love it."
You smiled, warmth crawling over your face.
"When did you get this?" He asked curiously.
You laughed softly "A few days ago. I wanted to give it to you today, but I wasn't sure if...well."
"If I felt the same?" He finished and you chucked.
"Yeah."
Sliding the bracelet onto his wrist, he set the box down before taking the flowers from you. Setting them aside, he turned to look at you again and let out a soft breath as he shook his head.
"I hate that it took me so long to say anything."
You shook your head softly "It wasn't just you, I didn't say anything either."
He took a step closer to you and took your hands in his "Either way, we shouldn't waste anymore time, right?"
You smiled "Right."
"Ever since we became friends, I knew I loved you. You were my person. I just didn't realize how deep it all really was."
"You're my person to Shang-Chi."
Gripping your hand a bit tighter, he slowly pulled you closer to him. Your chests touched as his free hand rested on your waist. Your noses brushed gently as he stared into your eyes.
"I really don't think I can live without you, you know."
You smiled softly, he really did feel everything you did.
"Ditto."
He grinned before he pressed his forehead against your softly. You closed your eyes and took in a breath embracing how close he was. Your heart seemed to stutter in your chest as you felt his lips brush yours. You held your breath and kept your eyes shut as you felt his lips press fully against yours.
Leaning into the kiss, as you felt electricity seem to flow through you, your gripped his jacket with your hand. His hand wrapped around your back as he pulled you closer.
Various emotions and feelings rushed through you, as you held onto each other. And it all felt perfect, it all felt right.
xx End xx

All the ways we sabotaged it. [Shang-Chi x reader]
Inspired by skinny dipping by Sabrina Carpenter. Ever since I've heard the song, I couldn't get this fic out of my mind. So why not write it?
Warning: Angst, angst, so much of it. Shang-Chi hiding things. Lots of misunderstandings, break-up. Happens six months after the events of Shang-Chi.
Summary: Six months after the break-up, you and Shang-Chi cross paths in a café downtown.
Tumblr media
It had been six months. Six long, hard, agonizing months since you and your ex, Shaun, broke up. It has been a long process but with the help of your family and friends, it seems less hard than if you had to do all of it alone. You just started to move on. Yes you still loved him; but in retrospect, you and him wouldn't have lasted. There were too many things happening at the time and honestly, neither of you were mature enough for a relationship.
It had been a Wednesday when you had decided to go out. Just spend your day with your own company. It had been a while since you'd been to this café specifically because of some guy. You really missed their lattes. Once you placed your order, you had searched for a seat and then sat down. Appreciating the calmness of the place. You would start writing on your computer, letting your fingers dance on the keyboard. The place has given you writing ideas that you were more than excited to write about.
ϟ
Everything was going perfectly until a familiar voice had stopped you in your frenzy. A voice you hadn't heard for so long. At first you thought you had misheard. Maybe it was someone that sounded like him. It couldn't be him right?
So the logical thing to do was to go back to what you were doing in the first place. It was just your imagination playing tricks on you. He couldn't be here. You'd heard from a mutual close friend that he had to fly back home. Where was "home"? You hadn't known, he'd never told you about his home country. "Family business. I swear!" She had told you.
However, when you looked up, you're surprised to see the same face attached to that voice. The same smile, and the same hair. All in all, the guy that had taken your heart six months ago. He was there right in front of you. And it seemed like he wanted to talk to you.
"Hi." He almost whispered when he had arrived in front of your table. In an instant you couldn't think of a proper salutation, so you opted for a simple "Hi. How are you?" And soon, a conversation bloomed. You two would catch up to whatever had happened since the separation. It was nice, talking like no time had passed; no separation happened. To be honest, you kinda missed those sort of days. When words would just fill out of your mouth, and you being unable to stop them.
And very soon, minutes would change into hours. Niether of you would notice. In those hours, Shaun had told you that he was actually grateful you had broken up with him. At first it stung a little; but then he told you the reason why. It had opened his eyes; he was reckless, had lied to you so many times, and hid so many things. His words. In retrospect he couldn't understand how you had put up with it. The gall of the man. He even had lied to you about his name!
Your response to it should've been to be angry with him. To yell at him about lying about his name. Understandably you were upset, you two shared a life together, though short lived, you felt he should have felt safe enough to tell you about it. After everything that had gone down after your departure, was explained to you, you understood. You would've probably done the same in his shoes. I mean, did it sound crazy? Yes. Did you wonder how that concerned you in any way? Heck yes. Were you still worried about the guy? Yes.
So in the end, you still listened to his crazy-not-so-crazy story. In the end, you still had a little bit of concern and empathy for this guy.
You decided to go home when the sky changed hues. You had spent a good day in his company in this café. But now it was time to go home. As soon as you two parted ways, you questioned yourself on why you two didn't work.
Yes, he had lied and hid things. But at the end of the day, your delusional mind thought that it could've been salvaged somehow. It rattled on past opportunities of reconciliation and the multiple ways you would have been more than happy to be supportive of him and journey. However, you ultimately came to the conclusion that if it hadn't worked, it probably wasn't meant to be.
Really, that day had just been a reafirmation that you two had had a good run, but like all good things it was time to let go and move on. you were more than ready.

The Golden Dagger Club
Tumblr media
Pairing: Shang-chi x symbiote!reader
Word Count: 2145
You were just starting to repair the damages of a recuperating career and then the Blip happened. You were dusted away for five years and appeared back into your shitty apartment – your old shitty apartment that was occupied by someone else – and were left with nothing. Your clothing and furniture were all thrown away and your renewed show was trashed because everyone still alive was trying to cope with the loss of loved ones.
To those that stayed, you were considered lucky. Is it lucky to have nothing to come back to? The banks refused to help and getting any loans needed minimum of five years of income. Obviously that’s impossible as you were dusted for all five of those years making the institution useless. No one was willing to hire either as you were often overqualified or lacked any recent experience in the workforce.
Unlike some of the others who also disappeared, you didn’t have a family to help you adapt to the new culture that flourished whilst you were gone. There was still a semblance of the old but you were on your own.
Waiting was the worst. The United Nations were scrambling to provide provisions, documents, and other essentials for those who came back. It was a real shit show and at times, made you wish you never came back.
You had to worry about scavenging enough food for Venom or else it’s your organs that’ll be on the menu and you want your organs to remain intact and uneaten. You also don’t want to watch Venom bite someone’s head off again. You had to work fast as Venom was most likely going to starve and the government wasn’t working fast enough.
You heard murmurs of an underground tournament that pays very well for winning contestants. You weren’t a stranger of questionably immoral activities. You and Venom needed this. It was a saving grace in the waiting game of darkness. The United Nations were behind on provisions and housings, and you couldn’t wait for the miracle of them hurrying along the process.
So you left. The world didn’t need to know you were back, undusted and alive. It had moved on without you and there was no point in sticking around. The world would believe you were the unlucky ones to be at the wrong place during the Snap.
The world would get to learn of the existence of Venom, see the both of you as more than a blurry black figure from security cameras. See the two of you reappear after your hiatus. Your reappearance will be on that podium, hundred of eyes on you, seeing you, and cheering for you.
You had arrived to your brand new start. A new beginning to the end of a shitty chapter. “Welcome to the Golden Daggers Club! We’re a multi-platform global operation. Every fight live streamed on the dark web. Thousands of viewers placing bets as we speak.” The ringmaster, Jon Jon, explained as he handed you the sign up sheet. You read carefully, not wanting to be screwed over in the end, and when you deemed everything acceptable you signed on. It was fast and easy. Pen on paper and suddenly a new door opened.
There must’ve been hundreds of people in the unfinished building. Small cells, containing smaller fights, lead up to the giant podium where the grander fights and higher betting stakes take place. Within the club, you had to earn your place. Starting in those small cells and work your way up to become a favorite.
Your first opponent was no one memorable. They were enhanced to some degree but nothing remotely close to be able to take the two of you down. It was almost too easy but Venom adored the attention they’d garnered. On the other side of the cell were many onlookers, wanting to see more of the alien creature. It was itching more for fights, more advanced opponents, and scoring chocolate money. The club loved Venom. The fame and attention caught the curiosity of the club’s founder.
Xu Xialing was cold, complex, and a fighter. Her coldness was strictly targeted to men but once she saw the person beneath Venom, she’d lighten up around the two of you. You became her friend. You’d learn bits and pieces of her past while you shared yours. She’d given you a chance to start anew even if she didn’t know it. You felt like you owed her for providing a way to provide for Venom in a way your old job couldn’t. You and Venom took it upon yourselves to take out the trash, people who were trying to shut her operation down. The club meant so much to people and you didn’t want anyone to shit on the empire she’d built.
It was a night like any other. Bets were placed and the money just kept coming. The bar was filled as always and Venom was itching for its turn. “Take it easy on the chocolates, it’s about to be your turn.” You were currently watching the fight between Abomination, who was broken out of prison by his opponent, and the current Sorcerer Supreme, Wong. Wong seemed overwhelmed at first but managed to get Abomination to punch themselves.
“I’ve worked up an appetite.” Venom grunted as they bit the whole chocolate bar in its entirety. You could feel it buzzing with excitement.
Wong had won his fight and you were walking towards the main stage. “Doing what, sitting?” You replied as Venom’s pitch black skin covered you fully. Your thin arms concealed by its large muscles and build. No one in the crowd would ever guess who was underneath its skin.
The name of your opponent was called Flux. You had seen his fights before, seen him climb up ranks. You nor Venom were worried though. You’d let Venom take full control as it was its moment not yours. Venom tore onto the stage, hyping up the crowd, and waited for the fight to begin. The lights, the cheers, and the overwhelming anticipation riddled your being. It was exhilarating and you couldn’t wait for Venom to have the time of its life.
Flux wasn’t overpowered by much. Having superhuman strength, stamina and durability assists in keeping up with you and Venom. You’d been lucky no one has caught on to your weaknesses. As Venom controlled your body, you thought about how different your life had become and how thankful you were for being the right match for Venom. Feeling the immense happiness originating from it makes you happy. You knew Venom felt miserable hidden within your body, not allowed to stretch till night fell. Here in the club, it didn’t matter. Almost every fighter had some enhancement that made them different from everyone else. Had skills most didn’t possess.
Once the fight was over, the club’s staff members dragged Flux away towards the locker room. Venom, after celebrating its win with the crowd, followed afterwards. A giant teeth-filled grin dwelled on its face until its skin disappeared into your body.
You opened your designated locker and pulled out a box of chocolates and a 12 pack of diet soda. Opening them one by one you feed Venom by placing them into its mouth and congratulating them on its win while you consume the diet soda. In moments like these Venom resembled a puppy. Craved for your attention and wanted to feel loved.
You’d notice Jon Jon speaking to someone you’d only seen on your phone. The Bus Boy video that’s been dominating the internet. Venom had dismissed the guy as he wasn’t anything special except for maybe his delicious brain but you didn’t want to find out.
“[Reader], Venom,” Jon Jon yelled, “the boss wants to talk!” The guy next to him watched curiously at the Venom head appearing out of your side.
“If anyone steals even one chocolate or soda, I’ll bite your head off and feast on your organs.” Venom made sure to show off its teeth to the remaining contenders before going to Xialing’s office. You sat down on a chair waiting for her to arrive. Jon Jon left the dubbed Bus Boy in her office as well. He stayed standing, not knowing what to do. He was nervous, that was evident, and a bit awkward.
“Do you know who we are supposed to meet?” He didn’t know how to talk to you or Venom. If he were being honest, Venom kinda scared him. The threats given did not help at all. “I need to find my sister. Do you know her, Xu Xialing?” You noticed he kept a white tissue around his nostrils. The metallic smell of blood allowed you to know the reason why.
You stayed quiet not knowing the reason as to why he was asking. Knowing he was in her workplace, she’ll show herself eventually.
She walked in, taking her place behind her laptop.
“You run this place?” He talked in Mandarin.
“I own it.” She replied back.
Another woman was let in by Jon Jon, counting the stack of cash as she walked into the room. She was adorable when she was caught red handed. Having bet against the man, her friend apparently. “Did you bet against me?”
“No.” She lied. “I bet on that Venom dude earlier.” In an attempt to change the subject, she turned the attention on you and Xialing, “Hi Xialing and stranger. I’m Katy. You’re, like, such a badass. Everything that you do is, like, so cool. That was really cool.” She walked towards one of the seats next to her friend, which you still did not have a name for.
“This is [Reader].” Xialing replied, “The Venom dude from earlier.”
Katy gasped excitedly, “No way! I thought Venom had more muscles. Love the costume by the way. What fabric do you use?” She shook your hand frantically and laughed, “Your fight was so amazing. You made me a lot of money.”
You had never integrated with someone who had so much shameless confidence. She had seen you and Venom fight and she was treating you like a hero. Most run away at the sight of the two of you. It was a nice change of scenery. “Alien, I guess? Venom come out and say ‘hello’ to a fellow fan.”
“A fan…” He muttered as he moved his head towards her, “So unafraid, so courageous. You shall not be eaten.”
She chuckled nervously, “Thank you.”
“I like your pants.” Xialing turned the conversation towards herself.
Katy blushed, “Thank you. Thanks. Yeah.” She was obviously flattered by the compliment as she smoothed out her yellow pants.
“What do you want?” The coldness of Xialing's voice appeared suddenly. A certain sharpness you had never heard, finally making its existence known.
“The Ten Rings ambushed us in San Francisco.” San Francisco was the place where you once lived. The tomb of the life you once had.
“I saw the video.” Everyone had seen the video. It became a viral phenomenon which was rare as it raced against hero and alien sightings, and meet and greets with international heroes.
“They took my pendant. They’re gonna come for yours next.” You had learned about the pendant Xialing never took off as it was a gift from her mother. To learn he shared the same or similar pendant must mean only one thing. “I don’t know what he wants with them, but we both know it can’t be good.”
“You know what he said to me when he left?” You heard this story only once. It was a painful memory of abandonment and the loss of a sibling. Not in death, but in spirit. Lost of hope while living in the fragments of an once happy family. “‘I’ll be back in three days.’ And after three days, I went to our mom’s shrine and waited. Three days turned into a week, a week turned to a month, and a month turned to six years. That’s how long it took me to realize I didn’t need him any more. I built this place on my own. I didn’t need you then, and I don’t need you now.”
“I volunteer to eat him.” Venom liked Xialing. She snuck chocolates to it and was the first person, who wasn’t [Reader], to not be afraid of it. She gave you and it a home. “I’ll make it painful.” He licked his lips to scare Xialing’s brother even more.
Xialing smiled at Venom. It was the thought that counted and Venom meant well. He inched away from you and asked, “Then why would you send me the postcard?”
“What postcard?”
He got up from his seat and reached into his pockets. He slowly walked towards her before handing it to her.
“I didn’t send you this.” After she spoke those words, everything went to shit.

Why is it people seem to love and forgive complex, sympathetic male villains who struggles with their inner darkness (see also Loki), but as soon as a female one comes along she’s either accused of being an “evil bitch” or “badly written”?

Author: Aaron
“This is bullshit.” You faked a smile and waved off another pretentious, arrogant customer. “Driving a car worth more than my yearly salary and this asshole can’t even give me a decent tip.” You took the few small, crumpled dollar bills from the dusty tray and stuffed them into your pocket. “Why do we even come here every day.”
“Pays the bills, doesn’t it?” Shaun said waving the next car towards the entrance.
“You’re a funny man Shaun… did anybody ever tell you that?” Shaun took the keys from the presumed banker… stockbroker... what ever other bullshit jobs that just existed to feed money into the pockets of the already affluent and ushered them through the entrance, you watched as the well-dressed woman placed something gently into Shaun’s hand.
“Sometimes, but this funny man just netted himself a twenty.” Shaun held the crisp note up proudly towards the sun before folding it and gently placing it into his top pocket. “It’s all about the smile, this place might pay your bills if you put some actual effort into being able to talk to people.” He shrugged smugly.
“Very good. Proud of yourself?” You asked with a dropped face. “I just feel like there’s more to life than standing in a parking lot and driving other peoples fancy cars while I can barely afford the payments on my death-trap of a car, you know?” Shaun nodded in subtle agreement. “My friend, we, are destined for some kind of greatness in this world, you know what I mean?”
“Trust me, our life isn’t exactly luxury but its simple. We go to bed at night, we wake up, we eat… whatever. It might be boring but its consistent and it’s safe.”
“Safe? We live in a not exactly nice part of San Francisco, do you know how many times I’ve been mugged on my walk home from this hellhole?” Shaun chuckled as he played with the keys to the vehicle that he had been entrusted with.
“Maybe safe was a bit of an overstatement but at least we don’t live in New York… bad stuff always seems to go down with the avengers over there. I don’t care how cheap the rent gets you won’t catch me renting an apartment over there. Sure it wont cost nearly as much as it used to but insurance still doesn’t cover alien attacks or the hulk smashing through your windows.”

currents swept you out (high tide came and brought you in) [shang-chi x fem!reader]
Tumblr media
Almost a year later, but the muse came. (Sorry but also not sorry! xo)
I love all the melancholy and weight in Shang-chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It's something I tried to explore here but I'm (of course) unsure if that was conveyed well.
Also shoutout to the sweet anon who asked about a part 2 to i'll be getting over you my who life many months ago! It kept some of my motivation for this up and kept me from deleting the draft.
Anyways, I love Shang-Chi and I would love to see more writing for him!!!
Please like, comment, and reblog! xo
+++
You think you catch glimpses of him throughout the years. A mirage of his figure around the corner, in a shadowed hallway. When you lay outside among the trees, you swear you see a vision of his face as the sun shines down on you. In the brief moments where the quiet becomes too much at the compound, you glance over your shoulder to see if he’s waiting for you, like he did before when you would sneak around for a quick word or a forbidden touch.
But Shang-qi is not there anymore, not here at all, and you don’t see him anywhere. He feels everywhere but you also know he is nowhere you can reach. Nowhere you can go. He cannot appear to you, even when that’s the only thing you want.
He is a ghost that lingers, but he is a ghost nonetheless.
And when you finally escape the compound and head for Ta Lo, you resolve to leave his ghost where it belongs: in the past.
You aren’t expecting to see Shang-qi in Ta Lo when he finally comes. You aren’t expecting to see him at all. Nan had told you that they had prepared for both his and Xialing’s arrival, but you doubted that he would ever come.
You are not even part of the welcoming group when his company rolls up in the car. First treated as a hostile group, then welcome like family. Your duties keep you physically away but the longing in your heart pulls at you no matter the distance you happen to keep from Shang-qi or Xialing.
You long to see his face, to watch as his eyes light with recognition (if, in fact, he did remember you at all). An ache deepens, and the pulling in your heart becomes slightly painful. You decide you don’t know what will be worse: living with the pain in your heart and leaving him alone or being in his presence after fifteen years of absence and wondering and grief.
When you feel your heart has gathered enough courage, you go to find him. Though the scenery is much different, for a moment you are reminded of when you would look for him at just fourteen years old, willing to risk what felt like it all at the time just to see him transiently.
The teenage love you for him that felt so all-consuming now just makes you feel forlorn.
You sit down next to him and greet him, "Shang-qi."
He turns his face and looks at you. It takes a second but there is a little surprise amidst his recognition. There is something else, too, something deeper. Something that you may not have words for but you understand all the same. A tenderness and vulnerability is there, but also shadows and fog. The rawness of what he felt fifteen years ago has dimmed with age and grief
"It was a long time ago when we last saw each other..."
"I didn't even know if you were still alive." He shakes his head and clasps his hands together on his lap.
"I found my own way," You smile, leaning in to his space before retreating.
There is a brief silence that elapses. One filled with a strange, awkward sense of peace. Or maybe comfort.
"I have heard you are trying to find your own."
"That's one way of putting it." His brow furrows and his eyes take on a different kind of shine. It's not as light as it was.
There is a gap of fifteen years in which you both lived without each other. Whatever innocent little thing you shared with him before he left to make another life for himself has been overshadowed and forgotten for things far more substantial.
For a moment the teenage girl in your heart cries. She wonders if you will ever know his lips on yours or his hands in your hair or a smile meant only for you. It is all she has ever wanted. Adult you, however, knows that the chasm between then and now is something that may not ever be able to be bridged between the two of you. And though Shang-qi is sitting beside you now, you recognize that you may never get to find what was lost so suddenly fifteen years ago.
Shang-qi may never stop being a ghost that haunts all your what-ifs and maybes.
“You were so heavy,” Your hands close around his. “So hard. Brittle. When I was younger, until you left the compound, all I wanted was to help you bear your burdens, but I know now that you wouldn’t have let me. If I asked you now, I think you still wouldn’t let me.”
Shang-qi doesn’t say anything, but you can tell from his eyes that he’s listening. He’s always listening. But his muscles are still tense, his shoulders tight. Still listening but withholding at the same time. Always withholding.
“I know I can’t solve this for you — whatever it is you are trying to fix. I can’t do any of this for you; you must do it for yourself,” You remove your hands from their place over his and expel a deep breath. “But I hope you know you can lay some of what you carry down.”
It is still quiet when you stand from your seated position next to him, but the quiet has transformed. It’s no longer peaceful for comfortable or familiar, but solemn and weighty. No matter how much you may wish to, you cannot untangle Shang-qi’s knots for him. You cannot bridge the gap between the present and past for the both of you. You can only decide to do it for yourself and and hope that he meets you halfway.
“Shang-qi,” It takes a moment, but he tilts his head up and his eyes meet yours, “I know who you are. I’ve never forgotten. But you seem to have, and what we — I — want is for you to remember.”

(Y/N) : What makes you believe you are worthy of it?
NOOB SAIBOT : I will prove it to you
NOOB SAIBOT : I live to serve you, my Goddess
(Y/N) : Serve me if you must but I am not looking for worship
NOOB SAIBOT : What are you looking for then?

NOOB SAIBOT : Not at all, my Goddess
NOOB SAIBOT : You entertain Johnny Cage’s advances?
(Y/N) : Is that a problem?
NOOB SAIBOT : I will bring him down under
(Y/N) : I am looking for a man that can please me
NOOB SAIBOT : I can please you in all ways
(Y/N) : Oh?
NOOB SAIBOT : You did not like me in my last life?
(Y/N) : Not that. You just didn’t have enough darkness
NOOB SAIBOT : So I am perfect for you now?
(Y/N) : You are still Bi-Han at the end of the day
NOOB SAIBOT : The man you think of is dead
(Y/N) : Don’t look so dead to me
(Y/N) : What do you desire, shadow?
NOOB SAIBOT : To be your consort
(Y/N) : Hmm. I will think of it
NOOB SAIBOT : I would do anything for you, my Goddess
(Y/N) : Anything?
NOOB SAIBOT : Anything.
NOOB SAIBOT : No other man is worthy of you
(Y/N) : And what makes you say that?
NOOB SAIBOT : I can give you all you desire. They cannot
NOOB SAIBOT : Shang Tsung was weak. He could not handle a woman like you
(Y/N) : And you can?
NOOB SAIBOT : More than you know
NOOB SAIBOT : Death seeks your embrace
(Y/N) : And you shall have it
NOOB SAIBOT : That is all I desire
NOOB SAIBOT : The only one I yearn for is you
(Y/N) : Prove it
NOOB SAIBOT : I will, my goddess
(Y/N) : Your brother is getting in the way of our plans
NOOB SAIBOT : I will deal with him
(Y/N) : Make sure it’s a slow and painful death
(Y/N) : Scorpion has disrespected me for the last time
NOOB SAIBOT : He will not live to see another day
(Y/N) : Thank you, my one and only
(Y/N) : I have never had a being worship me
NOOB SAIBOT : I will do anything for you
(Y/N) : Maybe you are worthy
(Y/N) : You wish to be my consort?
NOOB SAIBOT : That is all I ask of you
(Y/N) : Your wish is granted
NOOB SAIBOT : I have never seen anything more beautiful
(Y/N) : Are you sure, my shadow?
NOOB SAIBOT : Positive
(Y/N) : Shao Kahn believes you are my concubine
NOOB SAIBOT : I would not mind that
(Y/N) : *laughs* I didn’t know you could be so dirty
JOHNNY CAGE VS (Y/N)
JOHNNY CAGE : Still banging scary shadow dude
(Y/N) : Why are you so concerned?
JOHNNY CAGE : Just trying to see if I could have a shot
JOHNNY CAGE VS NOOB SAIBOT

It's the little things [Shang-chi x reader]
Description: It's in the mornings that Shang-chi realizes all the little things that make him love you.
Warning: cuddles, make-out session, Shang-chi being a dork
A/N: I obviously don't own any of the characters.
Tumblr media
⇣⇣⇣
What Shang-chi always loved about days in bed with you was the you part. He loved being able to bask in your presence, admire the little crinkle you made with your nose when you felt at ease, relaxed. Just in a good place. He had always been fascinated with the way you had invaded his place when you had first started dating.
It wasn't a bad thing, the invasion part, he loved it. You had arrived and what he thought of as an apartment turned into something more of a home. He was eager to come back to his place, and not for the same reasons this time. He loved being able to come home to someone and spend time with them.
Now you were deeply asleep. He could hear your little snore, which he found just adorable. It just made him to cuddle with you more, and that is what he did. Tightening his grip on your frame, he didn't even notice that smile that crept from behind his cheeks; as he got more comfortable in the position you two were in.
"I can feel you stare at me." You said, eyes still closed. From the way his breathing had changed, you could tell. You didn't want to open your eyes yet, you didn't feel awake enough.
"Oh yeah? And what if I am?" He asked. You feigned thinking about it with a low hum when you already knew the answer.
"Then it's rude. When people sleep, you don't stare at them. You said, your voice failing to hide your chuckle. You would have stared too, had you woken up before him.
"I'm sorry. Can't help myself when the eighth wonder of the world's in front of me." Now you had opened your eyes, you couldn't believe he was saying this. It probably was one of his worst pick up lines ever.
"That's one of the worst pickup line I've heard in a while. And I worked as bartender once." You said, laughing this time. You were becoming fully awake by now.
Now that she was looking at him, he really took the time to observe her eyes. They were now his favorite color. He thought he could look at them forever. And maybe that was true.
"Okay, I'll admit it's not the best one I've got. You gotta excuse cause it's like six in the morning." He said while yawning. Then, he started leaving kisses on the skin of your neck, making you giggle. It probably had become one of his favorite sounds. Soon after, you had enough of his kisses tickling you; so you took his face in your hands and gave him a proper kiss. A tender one, which turned into a making out session. You two were so engrossed by each other that when the alarm clock rung, you preferred to ignore it. But it didn't stop rigging, and thus you've had to stop.
"You gotta go to work. The bed's all mine now." You said, spreading your limbs on the mattress once he got out of bed.
He had to go to work, and he hated work.
Before leaving, though, he made sure to kiss you goodbye.
"Love you babe!" He said before opening the door.
"Love you Casanova."

Mulan 2020 sucks lol
Written and edited by yours truly
So, Mulan 2020 happened. And I am disappointed. Seriously disappointed. It is utter garbage. I would genuinely prefer it if I watched Mulan II 5 times in a row, and that's saying something.
There is so much to talk about because this has so many issues. I don't think my brain can handle a movie as bad as this for some time. It is a disgrace to the original animated movie.
(Who cares about spoilers?)
And yes, I can and I will compare it to the original movie because it is a remake. It is totally valid to see where this fell flat and where the original succeeded. I'm not saying it has to be like the original cartoon, that is stupid. As I mentioned, it's to highlight the failures of this movie.
Besides, even if we forget the fact that it is a remake, this movie is still horrible.
INTRODUCTION
Mulan 1998 is a classic. It has great visuals, an awesome soundtrack, wonderful and compelling characters, a great message and a cool plot. It's just a great movie in general. It is an adaptation of The Ballad of Mulan, a Chinese legend. Both the legend and the animated movie are about a young girl named Mulan who disguises herself as a man to take her father's place in the army to fight back against an invasion.
As big of a success Mulan was, Chinese audiences thought some things were weird. For instance, having a dragon be a comic relief character, given that dragons are highly respected in Chinese culture. So of course, Disney decided to try another shot, claiming that they wanted to be more culturally sensitive, accurate and closer to the original ballad.
Mulan 2020 is a remake of the original animated movie, and was marketed to be more "accurate to Chinese culture and the Ballad". This claim is, of course, false, because they failed in that aspect. Say what you will about the cultural inaccuracies in Mulan 1998, but at least it was a great movie. Besides, Mulan 1998 didn't pride or market itself on being culturally accurate, the way Mulan 2020 did, so there's that.
CHANGES
I don't mind some changes. And honestly, if there's one thing I appreciate, it's that it isn't a carbon copy of the original (looking at you The Lion King 2019).
Li Shang's character is divided into two characters: Commander Tung and Mulan's love interest Honghui, apparently in light of the Me-Too movement. This is a dumb reason. Disney wasn't comfortable with a superior having a relationship with a subordinate? The hell? The romance between Shang and Mulan was only insinuated at the end, when Mulan wasn't even a part of the army anymore, so there's that. Also, Mulan gave her consent, so I don't know what they’re talking about.
Mushu isn't present in the movie. I can see why though. He contributed quite a bit to the soul of the animated version but a CGI dragon would be very distracting. Also, the director said that removed him to achieve a more realistic tone.
Grandma? No grandma. Mulan has a sister though, who only exists to mess stuff up.
The Huns are replaced with the Rourans and Shan Yu is replaced with Bori Khan.
Mushu is replaced with a phoenix, who acts as an emissary for the ancestors
There are no songs, except in the end credits, which isn't a bad thing. The instrumentals of the songs in the animated one play during some scenes (I'll talk about the music, don’t worry)
CHARACTERS
The characters in this movie are so boring. Our lead character Mulan lacks the charisma her animated counterpart had. She's utterly bland, uninteresting and poorly written. In the original, she knew she wasn't physically strong and that she couldn't solve her problems with her strength, so she used her intelligence and wit. She excelled by working hard and being strong willed and determined. This Mulan is a well rounded character.
Mulan in the live action is given Chi powers (Chi is a big part of Chinese medicine, in case you didn't know). Honestly, I wouldn't be as mad at Mulan being given superpowers, had they actually done this properly! Chi isn't like midichlorians, it's something that flows through everyone. Mulan is naturally born with dumb superpowers and has to hide them because as her dad says, " Chi is for warriors, not for daughters”. There is a problem:
It has been mentioned many times that Mulan needs to hide her superpowers otherwise she will be shunned and ostracised. Then why doesn't she get more repercussions everytime she uses her powers? The worst thing that happens is little Mulan getting looks of disgust when she uses them. On other occasions, when she is now a part of the army, she uses her powers in training and she doesn't get any backlash? What the hell?? Then why even bother in the first place?
The only way for this narrative to work is if Mulan got more repercussions for using her powers.
If I were to make the line "Chi is for warriors, not daughters," work, I would make it go something like this:
*At the end of the movie when Mulan comes home*
Dad: Didn't I tell you that Chi is for warriors, not daughters?
Mulan: "I am a daughter, but I'm a warrior too."
(Yes, I know this is similar to a scene in Avatar: The Last Airbender, but this would be better, tbh. Also, watch Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Let me compare the training montages from both movies.
In the animated one, there is an absolutely AWESOME montage of Mulan training side by side with her companions, slowly gaining their trust. She climbs the pillar with both medallions by using her wit, not by brute force. This Mulan worked hard. Besides, the fact that "I'll Make A Man Out Of You" plays over this is the only thing that makes it better (banger song, thank you Donny Osmond)
In the live-action, Mulan is supposed to lift up buckets and climb on top of a mountain. There are also other training scenes, but those aren't very important. In these scenes, she succeeds with the power of CHI. WHY? Mulan here just achieves her goal because she is oh so special. She didn't work to achieve her goal at all, because she is perfect. No struggling or development here at all.
Mulan in the animated version was more concerned about saving her father. Mulan in the 2020 version is a dumb patriot who can't even do patriotism right ("I know my place. It is my duty to fight for the kingdom and protect the Emperor") How very empowering.
In short, live-action Mulan can do no wrong. She has no flaws, no personality and no charm. Everything comes to her pretty easily, because MAGIC.
Li Shang's role in the live-action is divided between Commander Tung and Mulan's love interest Honghui, as mentioned before. Both of these characters are flat, dumb and boring. Tung exists to tell Mulan to cultivate her Chi and to train these idiots (and to offer his daughter’s hand in marriage to her, unaware that Mulan isn’t actually a guy, but eh). Honghui is there to be a stupid love interest, who gives us an “I am Spartacus” moment.
The witch is by far the most interesting character. She actually has more than one side to her, has SOME kind of depth and you can even feel sorry for her. She is supposed to serve as a foil to Mulan, given that both have similar powers. In case you've forgotten (which is something I wouldn't blame you for), she's an outcast who's now working with Bori Khan. Why is she an outcast? Because of her Chi. The witch has said many times that she could kill Bori Khan in a snap, then why doesn't she kill him? Because she needs acceptance? What the hell? She decides to pull out the whole "We're the same, you and I," stupidity to Mulan, and I can see that. It's just that the writers just didn't put much thought into it. “It’s too late for me” because you saw a woman leading an army of men? Also, why does she warn Mulan that Bori Khan is coming? Unless she's playing both sides, except her motivations aren't made clear enough for this to make sense. Finally, she dies for the dumbest reason. God, it just makes me so mad. She had so much potential, but no. They just had to mess her up.
Bori Khan? MORE LIKE BORING KHAN. Not much is there. His animated counterpart Shan Yu was scary and contributed to some of the darkest moments in the movie. This guy over here is just...nothing. That's all I have to say.
Mulan's sister is only there to mess up the meeting with the Matchmaker. What a stupid change. First off in the animated version, it's Mulan who messed up, because she isn't perfect. She fails at being stereotypically feminine AND masculine, but in the live-action, she literally pulls off a Spiderman cafeteria scene, and the blame is put on the sister. In the animated movie, this scene is groundwork for Mulan wanting to prove herself and going on a hero's journey, providing depth to her character, but in the live-action, she's perfect. What is the point? (I know this section was supposed to be about the sister, but eh). The sister doesn't provide anything else to the movie, so thanks! I hate it. Moral of the story: Girls can do anything boys can, as long as they have superpowers. If you are born special like Mulan, you can be respected, whereas if you are like the sister, you have no significance and in the end, you can just fit in and be irrelevant. Congratulations!
The live action group of guys Mulan met and befriended in the army lack the charm and comedic timing of their animated counterparts. That’s it. Seriously. I have nothing more to say about them, because they don't really have anything going on. I don't even know why they are included, because their contribution is nil, save for them blandly speaking lines from the animated version’s songs ("I don't care what she looks like, I care what she cooks like"), which is seriously cringe.
The dad is there to tell Mulan that Chi is for warriors. A shame, because I really liked the dad in the movie. He was a source of wisdom for Mulan, whose greatest honour was having her for a daughter. In the live-action, he just takes the sword that Mulan is given at the end of the movie. The mom is meh.
The emperor is also meh. At least he was wise and cool in the animated version, but here he just does bed sheet kung-fu.
Did I mention that the dynamics between the characters are unnatural, forced, awkward in a bad way and in no way indicates any chemistry between them? Oh yeah, I didn’t, until now. They don’t establish much when it comes to emotion.
Simply put, Khan (Mulan’s horse in the animated version) had more personality than all of these characters combined
PERFORMANCES
Liu Yifei as Mulan was a pretty terrible choice. She is just a block of wood, who has absolutely no range, and this isn't because of the writing. She is genuinely bad, and is regarded as one of China’s worst actors (I kid you not). She just can’t emote.
Jet Li as the emperor is meh. But hey, he doesn’t have much to do, so eh.
Jason Scott Lee as Bori Khan is fine. He doesn’t suck, but he lacks the command and authority of a character who is supposed to be intimidating, but I guess it has something to do with the writing of his character.
Donnie Yen is a martial art legend, but unfortunately, he doesn't have much range as an actor.
The best performance of this movie is that of Gong Li, who played the witch. Honestly, she is charismatic, charming and has an idea of what she is doing.
To save everyone’s time, simply put: most of the performances are bland and mediocre. Partly due to bad writing and partly due to most of the actors not being, well, good at acting.
CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL ACCURACY
So Disney went all “we like cultural and historical accuracy”, which is nice. For example, the Huns are replaced by the Rourans, a real tribe in China around the time Mulan was supposed to be alive. They also removed the hair cutting scene, because as iconic and awesome as it is, it doesn’t make sense. Chinese men wore their hair long too. You know what? I like these kinds of changes. I appreciate accuracy. If only Disney didn’t pride themselves on their accuracy when they got almost everything else wrong (They somehow got Mulan's house wrong lol). I don't know jackshit about Chinese culture so just go watch that Xiran Jay Zhao video it's very swag
THE BALLAD OF MULAN
In a surprising turn of events, this isn't accurate to the Ballad, like they had marketed it to be (I know, I’m shocked too). In a reference to the Ballad, Mulan is riding a horse and she sees two rabbits running side by side. She goes home and tells her family that she saw 2 rabbits, and she thinks that one was male and the other female, but she wasn't sure. This just misses the entire point of the Ballad.
Long story short, Mulan in the Ballad is actually a seamstress. She joined the army in her father's place. She defeats the barbarians and goes on a ten year long campaign with her friends, after which they meet the Son of Heaven (a sacred imperial title of a Chinese emperor). He offers her a high ranking position, which she refuses, because she just wants to go home. She returns home and her family welcomes her. Sometime later, her friends come to visit her, and they find out that she is actually a woman. The friends are shocked because she has been in the army for 12 years and in those 12 years, they didn't even realise that she was a woman.
Mulan then replies:
The male hare's feet hop and skip
The female hare's are muddled and fuddled
But when two hares are running side by side
How can you tell the male from the female?
Which is where the poem ends.
So, Mulan just going on, judging those rabbits like that makes absolutely no sense. The Ballad is about how no matter how different men and women look, when they live and fight amongst each other, who gives a damn about the differences? You know what would have made sense though? If Mulan got off her horse, went close to the rabbits, examined them, and then made the conclusion that one is male and the other is female. This would actually be sticking to the message of the Ballad. Also, why do they make it ambiguous as to whether she accepts the high ranking position? I assume for a sequel (yes, God save my soul). Here we can see another example of its impeccable accuracy to the Ballad.
THIS ISN'T EMOTIONAL AT ALL
Everything that made the original film good has been stripped away. Every moment that is meant to be emotional is very dull. For example, the scene where Mulan makes the decision to take her father's place in the army is supposed to be a very powerful scene. Mulan is risking it all just so her dad can be safe. She might be killed if discovered, and her family would be dishonoured.
When Mulan comes back from the Matchmaker, she has a moment of reflection while singing "Reflection". This is the beginning of her personal journey, discovering who she is. In this, after Mulan comes back from the Matchmaker, she doesn't have a moment of reflection. The army immediately shows up. Am I really supposed to believe that Mulan feels bad about this? That Mulan is really struggling?
When Mulan’s friends are singing, it suddenly shifts to the striking scene of the burnt village. This, in my opinion, is the best use of tonal whiplash. From this point on, things are getting serious, and the emotional weight of this tragedy is felt. In this, they just randomly show up at the village. There is no seriousness (stop trying to tell me this movie is adult, mature and serious, it just looks like that on the surface).
Their attempts at being emotional are poor and unconvincing, and ultimately, the end product is an emotionless, soulless, depthless entity.
THE MUSIC
The director mentioned in an interview that she didn’t add songs into the movie because it is “unrealistic to break into song when you're in war”, and I don't think I’ve heard anything more false (apart from the concept of a flat Earth). Even I, who isn't going into war anytime soon, know this is false. They instead inserted instrumentals from the original film. Except, it's very weirdly placed. The instrumental for Reflection is placed when Mulan is fighting the Rourans after she reveals herself to be a woman. Like, there isn't any context. In the end credits, they had the original song "Loyal, Brave and True" sung by Christina Aguilera, which was nice. I don't really have much to say in regards to the music. The music is overall forgettable.
THE ACTION
The action may seem weird, but this kind of martial arts is a part of the Wuxia genre, which is what they were going for. Well, they failed. The choreography is bad, the CGI is bad, EVERYTHING is bad. Honestly, if you want a good Wuxia movie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon exists. The action is here stupid and stiff.
OTHER DUMB STUFF
Why does Mulan take her armour off before going into battle? That is just stupid. Can't you just take the bindings off? Also, WHY OPEN YOUR HAIR-
Mulan really likes kicking spears (and pointy stuff in general). Seriously. It’s weird.
The CGI is okay I guess, I don't know. The phoenix in some scenes looks pink to me. There are some pretty visuals though.
It is very obvious that there is a green screen used in the scene where Mulan and her friends find the burnt village. And it looks bad. Pretty ugly. It looks bad. The green screen looks bad.
The war strategy is just weird. I can't really say anything about it in text form because how am i supposed to describe it, help- (she literally teleported behind the bad guys in the avalanche scene-).
I like how the animated film, which had a dragon as a comic relief and other silly stuff, is more mature than this.
For what joy does Mulan get another sword from the army? Also, shame the dad is all “oh look at the values written on the sword, they are honourable” even though in the original the greatest honour was having her for a daughter.
How was Mulan even able to tell the gender of the rabbits?
Why not just try to send a warning to the Emperor that the Rourans are coming to get him?
Why does Commander Tung let Mulan lead them-
I AM SO DONE
Well, I think I have said everything I wanted to about this movie. I know I havent talked about its controversies (like filming next to a concentration camp), but honestly, I am done. I am so done with this. This document took 5-6 months of my life. I am kind of proud of this, and there isn't much I have done to be proud of. I did procrastinate on this a bit, and I had stuff going on, but finally, I am done. In the future, if I remember something, I'll add it here, but I think that is unlikely. I never want to watch or even go near Mulan 2020 again. It's horrible, and there is barely anything redeemable. I hate it here. It’s been reported that a sequel is in development. If it’s true, of course I’ll watch it, how else am I supposed to validate my self hate? I am also, of course, the resident “friend who suffers for everyone else’s entertainment”. If you want a live action remake of Mulan, Mulan: Rise of a Warrior exists. Go watch it, it’s free on YouTube with subtitles. I really liked it.
If you’ve somehow made it this far, thanks for reading. I congratulate you for putting up with whatever this is. I would also like to take a moment to congratulate myself for actually committing to this. It was painful yet fun to complain about this to the best of my ability. If anyone wants to add anything to this, feel free to do so. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m out. I have lost my faith in humanity, and I have other things to complain about.
