Finished drawing my character designs/ line up of the Light Fingers Crew to formalize my drawing of them

Overview/ Design talk under the cut if anyone is interested in that sort of thing

For all the designs I used the art given for them in the game as a starting point and then went from there. For all but Hephaesta of course that means using a non character specific art. I also wanted all the colors to sort of fit together so where i would have done more vibrant stuff and i strayed away from that.

Clara and Her Sister

Putting the discussion for these two together, as their designs recieved similar thoughts because they are identical twins. ('She is wearing the Fading Music-Hall Singer's face, which seems rude.')

The basic art of the bohemian faction is used to depict the sisters.

So this was my basic starting point for the visual design. I ended up diving further into research into bohemian fashion, which of course lead to me reading up on the history of the term and the connection to the Romani people. According to wikipedia, the word comes from the french term 'bohémien', which was the word for the Romani people.

This of course put a complex spin when i looked into the clothing used in the time, as theres a question between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation, and one I don't have the full understanding for.

Nevertheless i did take some inspirtation for the clothing here, Clara with having her hair loose and down and looser clothing, the singer with the hair scarf and the necklace among some inspirations.

Inbetween the two I imagine the singers appearance to be more reserved then Clarabelle's. For one, my interpretation of the singer is as someone who uses her singing as a backdrop for sneaking and gathering information (per her role as a 'contact' of the player). The other being that we are told Clara's title is the 'eccentric opera singer' to me implies a grander sense of creatativity and wilder clothing. In less stressful times I imagine her wearing brighter clashing colours and skirts with patterns on them and jewlery (which i intend to draw at a later time when i get better at adding patterns to clothes lol).

We also know the two of them are 'not young' so i attempted to not make them appear so.

Hephaesta

Heph is of course the one character of the group with a personalized art, which i used as the base for my design.

Hephaesta is supposed to be a large figure, as she is a strongwoman, and is described as towering over even jasper and frank. So of course I had to make her tall compared to the others of the group.

And of course i can't go without bringing up Katie Sandwina (again), a real strongwomen of the time who serves as a great inspiration both in body type and height.

What a woman huh.

Dr Vaughan

The Campaigner template art was the one used to depict her when you first speak to her and was a starting point here.

To me i always pictured her as a fairly older women given her experience and amount of time she's been researching. Clearly someone with a lot of exprience. And also i just vibe with it.

I kept her outfit simple, as i dont figure her as someone to put too much into the latest fashion given her focus on her work. I took the green from the art to use as her skirt to tie in that colour. I also looked up some photos of female doctors of the time and that partially influenced my art direction here.

Obliging Silverer

I debated including him or not given that you only have him as part of the team if you use the light fingers exclusive option to access the parabolan basecamp. But given the fact that he literaly dies defending the camp, I think its only fair that he gets included.

i just had a bit of fun with the design as there wasnt too much to restrict off. I dont draw a lot of characters with mustaches depsite them being a thing of the time, so I figured this was a good excuse as any. I kept with some orange colours within his colour scheme for further callbacks to parabola and his work.

Also hey did you know that people of an ashkenazi background can also have red hair? Fun fact heh.

Hey y’all! I’m gonna throw in my two cents about Pedro Pascal (and others) at the Met Gala this year because what is tumblr if not a place to give your opinion?

Let me start with this, not a single person who went to the 2023 Met Gala was secretly “protesting” the event or Karl. I’m being serious, not a single person. Especially not Pedro.

And I don’t say this to like burst anyone’s bubble! I say this as someone who likes fashion and celebrities and politics and activism. I say this as someone who loves hyping up the art Hollywood produces but who believes in being realistic about the world we are living in. And, in my opinion, pretending that rich famous celebs (even ones I love like Pedro!!) are somehow secretly subverting the system isn’t helpful. It’s actually very harmful.

So let’s break this down!

How does the Met Gala work?

So the Met Gala is actually a charity event. Every first Monday in May the Met puts on their gala to raise money for the Costume Institute. And they raise a lot of money like this. I mean A LOT. In 2017 they raised 12 million dollars.

So how to people get in??

Tickets are $50,000 a piece. Yes. $50,000. And not anyone can just buy one! Brands, like fashion house Valentino, buy tickets and then invite celebrities to go and show off their clothes. Valentino dressed 8 celebs at this years Met Gala. 8! Thats a huge chunk of change my lord.

So let me start by clearing this up: When it comes to the Met Gala Valentino is not a competitor to Karl. They just aren't. In the real world, Chanel and Valentino are competitors, but it doesn't work that way at the Met Gala in literally any sense. Not every celeb can show up in Chanel, so fashion houses and designers were asked to create looks to honor Karl. Which they did. In fact, here's Pierpaolo Piccioli honoring Karl in Vogue with a Valentino look. They were not enemies and he wasn't going to dress anyone in a "protest" look because he wanted to impress people online. Im sorry, but in the world of fashion Karl is a legend and everyone that night wanted to pay respects.

But lets move on to the actual looks.

The celebrities who were dressed by Valentino this year were Rihanna, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Viola Davis, Labrinth, Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas and Stephanie Hsu.

Lets look at how they were styled:

Okay so Karl famously loved a black and white looks so Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas and Stephanie Hsu all being in black and white is pretty spot on honoring from Valentino. Many, many celebs that night were in black and white.

But here's something else about the Met Gala, it's a really, really important event. And so many people who know nothing about fashion pay attention to it. So designers not only want to send looks that honor the theme, they want to send looks that honor their latest collections because they want people to buy their shit lol.

Viola Davis is in pink not because she wanted to protest anyone but because Valentino put out the PINKEST of PINK Fall/Winter 2022-2023 collections...ever. It's called the Pink PP collection and it literally took the fashion world by storm. Look at all that pink! This collection was literally everywhere last season, every celeb and influencer wanted this collection in their hands. If you Google "celebs Valentino pink", you're going to get a thousand photos of the hottest celebs rocking this collection. In fact, at last years Met Gala, Valentino dressed Sebastian Stan and Glen Close in pink.

It's just Valentino's Pink at this point. So much so that fashion critics almost cringe when they see it now lmao because it was so in our faces for that season. I understand that someone dug up a quote from Karl from years ago that people interrupted as him saying he doesn't like pink but thats actually incorrect. He used pink on the runway a lot.

Here he is walking the Chanel runway with his muse Cara Delevingne who's wearing....pink. There are many many more examples of this but i'll stop.

Okay. Lets talk about Pedros look.

As you can see he's wearing this almost exactly as it came down the runway. To me this means he had really very little control over the look. It wasn't designed specifically for him (as Olivia Wilde's look was designed specifically for her by Chloe), they just took it off the runway and slapped him in it because he's literally the hottest celebrity right now and Valentino wanted him to stand out in red and have people talk about them as they talked about Pedro. That's fine! That's how fashion works!

Idk if everyone has noticed how many black and white looks there were on the carpet but I'm telling you it was a LOT. Anyone not in black and white was gonna get noticed even more. That's why Valentino put Labrinth and Pedro in matching red looks. They had just sent those looks down the runway and they wanted them to stand out and get noticed. They put Rihanna and Florence in matching white looks. Priyanka, Nick and Stephanie all matched in black and white. They built a really clear theme when you line them up together. The only one who doesn't match is Viola and thats because, as I explained above, she's wearing PP pink which is iconic to their brand right now.

He's wearing the brand logo on his fingernails not because he's protesting anyone lmao but because they bought him a ticket worth $50,000 and he OWES them. The least he can do is get a silly manicure and have everyone zoom in on his hands to see that Valentino logo! And the look is meant to be edgy! Whats the least edgy but edgy thing for him to do? Get his nails done and then flip off the camera to show a brand logo. Duh.

Look. All that is to say. You can dig up all the gross and hateful quotes you want from Karl about pink or shorts or what he personally liked in fashion but it doesn't matter. Thats just not how the fashion industry works. Not a single person who actually cared about protesting him went that night. I'm certain if you asked Pedro personally "do you agree with some of the things Karl said?" he would answer, "NO! Of course I don't!" I think almost every single person who attended the Met Gala that night would say no. But no one has asked Pedro, at least not in public anyway.

So I get why people are upset he would go and now they feel they have to create a narrative about how he wasn't actually there to honor but secretly to protest and be a rebel. Guys, I mean this with love...thats silly. Thats SO silly. And it's not helpful. We have to let the rich and famous people speak for themselves and when they make mistakes or do things we don't agree with, they have to explain for themselves. We can't do it for them. A very rich fashion house bought him an obscenely expensive ticket to a special event and told him to wear a look off the runway and Pedro is FAMOUS now and he wants to keep it that way so he said "ok! sounds great!" That's it.

As far as what Pedro has said in public, he has no regrets about going to an event that honored a shitty guy and he wasn't protesting anything or anyone. Let's keep that narrative until he actually says otherwise with his own grown up, adult mouth.

Treehouse Ask: I hope you are doing well this holiday season? My ask regards Morpheus' proposal of marriage to Reader. How does she feel about becoming his wife? She's currently adjusting to becoming his queen, but how does she feel about the idea of tying her mortal self to him in holy matrimony?

Hi!!! Thank you sm for resending this ask and I hope you’re doing well too.

Yesterday I had a surgical procedure where they stuck some really big needles into my spinal column while I was under anesthesia to inject steroids. Still feeling pretty achy and not great, but big needles will do that to you lol.

Anyways on to the good stuff.

I’m going to start with getting into Morpheus and then Reader’s perspectives, to add context.

I’ve mentioned before about how I’m approaching Morpheus as a very old fashioned/proper being used to a specific standard and protocol when it comes to interpersonal relationships of all kinds. Not only is he a royal king, but he’s also an ancient god who follows ancient rules (for the most part). As a king and a god, he wouldn’t be beholden to any of his partners or feel a sense of accountability from them. They just weren’t equals. He could do as he pleased and demand what he wanted and they couldn’t. His past marriage with Calliope and past romances with Nada, Killala, and Alianora reflect this. (I also want to emphasize that the reason why Morpheus behaved this way in the past in treehouse is because that’s simply the way he learned how to behave in relationships. That was custom, both in the Waking world, which affects the dreaming, and the custom when it comes to royalty and people in power in general. And he was/is a selfish being so this feeds into that for him.)

He does truly love Reader and want to marry her, but the only way he knows how to love her is how he loved people in the past, which was dysfunctional/neglectful/toxic. Morpheus never learned how to be another way.

But he wants Reader more than he’s ever wanted anyone else and is like, if I can obtain her and secure her to me, everything else will fall into place! A lil delulu lol, but he’s not the god of thinking shit through.

On the other hand, Reader is a modern woman. Not just a modern woman, a modern woman who walked into this relationship with the expectation of modern treatment. Being treated equitably, being mutually responsible and accountable towards one another. Complete trust, honesty, and respect.

She’s not truly opposed to marrying him, but she’s less concerned with the “marriage” part of this equation as she is about the parts of a relationship that make a marriage successful. Can she trust him, will he remain true to her, will he protect her and not mistreat her, will he remain obsessed with her and not grow distant or bored. That’s where Morpheus’s one track mind and her clash.

She wants this relationship but on her terms, not solely his, from a position that can be negotiated from.

While Reader clearly isn’t secure in their relationship at the moment, she’s secure enough in herself that she isn’t afraid to hold Morpheus accountable even if it might jeopardize their future.

Spoiler alert - she does eventually agree to marry him and they have a fairy tale wedding before the baby is born and I’m sooo excited hehe.

But right now they’re essentially going through marriage negotiations, as royalty once arranged marriages. But they’re not negotiating over alliances or land or titles, Morpheus finally has met his match who wants something much more important than those things.

And every time she refuses Morpheus, he comes back with a better offer, so to speak. He’s already learned he can’t dazzle her with jewels and gold and things. He has to actually change for the better as a person to keep her. (More Hades and Persephone influences!)

(The way I see it, Calliope’s royal father, King Zeus, would have done all of the negotiating with Morpheus over their marriage. That’s what was done in Ancient Greece and what was/is done all over the world. Negotiating over the possession of Calliope, taking her from her father’s house and adding her to Morpheus’s house (aka family). This is a scenario that naturally lent itself to objectifying Calliope, placing her on a lower status to her husband.)

Reader is a very very special character to me. Not only does she represent me and how I view the world and how I view other people, she also represents the person I wish I could be and the strength/courage/bravery I wish for all people. By giving her her happy ending that she acquired on her own merits and strengths, not by compromising who she was but because she stuck to her guns, I hope to give us all a future where we love and are loved for who we are, not in spite of it.

right off the bat, i see this reading will look very different from jungkook's reading because i see multiple different lives that are affecting his current life.

#1. i see him as a painter, an artist. there's sun shining into his studio, and he has an outfit on that reminds me of great britain fashion in the 1500-1600s. he is a commoner who has made a name for himself by painting portraits and landscapes. at first, upper class nobles were not fond of him because of his social class, but because of his great attention to detail in his paintings and the artistic flair that he adds to each of his paintings, he had an affluent family sponsor him which made his paintings well-known and well-recognizable. i see him not constantly lacking a lot of sleep because he gets straight to work again if he has an idea that pops up in his head. his fame and popularity did not really matter to him because he viewed himself as a true artist who cared about the quality of his craft. i think he was very particular about who he decided to take in as his clients. i just keep seeing him painting and painting and painting. nothing else. i do see a very short glimpse of woman with light ginger red hair and she's in this light green almost grey-ish dress. he has a bit of a difficult perosnality <lol> and doesn't like having people around him, but he seems really comfortable around this woman. i think this woman was his muse. i don't think this woman is that significant to his current life.

#2. i see someone tasting wine and savoring its taste. he sits in silence during the night with his eyes closed. i sense that he is rich? a self-made businessman, a merchant. this is a man who is intelligent and has a keen eye for looking through people. he knows how to handle deals that benefit him and his business. i see him having a family, a wife that is too blurry for me to see, and 2-3 children. he has brown hair, brown beard, a hearty laugh, and a dad belly. he is very nice to get along with but not one you should underestimate because he is a very sharp guy. he values trust and loytalty in a business partnership, but his family comes first before everything. everyone is aware that they should not cross his boundaries or else the deal ends there.

#3. i'm feeling a bit of an egyptian or perhaps arabic influence here? the outfit and jewelry is definitely egyptian, but the kind of music i'm hearing, the instrumental sound, has a distinctly arabian sound to it. i see a woman twirling and dancing. she is very fit and greatly desired by many men. she, however, rejects all offers and stays single. she is very good at discerning people's intentions and is not particularly close to anyone; keeps to herself. she gets to choose who she wants to have a fling/relationship with (no ties) and enjoys herself confidently. i think she is part of some entertainment circle and is happy that she can travel with them and keep her freedom as an independent woman.

#4. i see a conductor, violinist, and pianist, accompanied by an orchestra. i think the pianist is suga and the violinist is his lover, while the conductor is a dear friend of theirs. it's like honey is dripping from his eyes as he watches her playing the violin. he matches his playing with her and he is completely mesmerized by how she plays with so much emotion and bravada. i believe this is during the romantic era of music, so around 1830s to 1900s. i don't really see anything else regarding their relationship, but i do see him sipping wine here as well with a candle lit during the night, working on new repertoire. i also see him on the bed, sitting, reading sheet music or a book with his lover next to him. she's asleep and he looks over and smiles, patting her head gently with his hand. i don't think they necessarily married or had children together, but the love i feel here is really deep and pure. she was his partner and muse. i really love the warmth that i feel here.

#5. i see him as a monk. he is sitting still and meditating. i also see him training, but i don't really know what style of moves he is mastering. this life feels like a distinct focus and reflection on the self. letting go of any sexual desires or any deep attachment he has with the world. it feels like he is a buddhist in china. he has quite a fulfilling life here and feels a lot of comfort in being by himself.

#6. this is a really brief one, but i see him in korea during the japanese colonial era. i see him looking around and then screaming something before throwing a bomb at someone higher-up. he's shot dead, but it causes some great casualties for the japanese soldiers. i think he had a wife here and maybe one teen daughter, but i don't see the daughter here and the wife does not seem to have a significant soul tie with him. i just see her telling him that he might die and wants him to reconsider, but he says that he doesn't mind and would do anything to contribute to his country's freedom.

him now. before i mention anything else, i would like to say that he has a very artistic soul. he is very creative and innovative, and i think in all of his lives, he pursued a career that let him express different aspects of himself. it makes sense why he is the way he is right now, based on his past lives. something i noticed from #1 and #4 is that the use of his hands feels very significant. he is probably very good at using his hands as a device for creation. this makes sense considering the fact that he produces so much amazing music and writes lots of lyrics for the band. i also feel that his life as a merchant is what helped contribute to developing his eye for people and their intentions, which is why he is probably very good at discerning who he should and shouldn't trust in this life. he is also very good at speaking as you can see on shows. i also see him just closing his eyes a lot and sitting silently, which reminds me of his life as a monk. overall, all of his past lives really helped him develop some key qualities he needed for this lifetime. i don't really sense much significant romance to point out for this lifetime, but the lover from #4 feels very significant to me. there's a possibility that yoongi might choose to live alone for this lifetime which is completely fine, but i do think that that lover is also currently alive as well. don't quote me on this since i'm unable to tell the proper age, but i do sense quite an age gap(?) between that lover and yoongi for this lifetime, so i don't think it'll be possible for him to be lovers with her in this lifetime again unless they're both willing to accept judgment from the public. it does make me really sad though. i wish they could be lovers again because that was so endearing to see. just two lovers very comfortable with each other, in love.

When I was dressing her up and adding little details to each outfit category I wanted the baubles in her hair to be different colors to reflect my vision of Shereé sitting cross-legged on the living room floor while Terrance sits on the sofa behind her, swapping each one out to match her outfit for the day. 🥺💕

Also you can't really see them super well in the screenshots but she is wearing diamond studs in the shape of her favorite cartoon character, Hello Kitty! I imagine they were her first "big girl" earrings - the first ones she got to switch the standard piercing studs out with - and they were a birthday present from her dad!!

Speaking of ear piercings: when the Claire's associate pulled out the piercing guns Terrance was more scared than Shereé was lmao. He might have shed a tear or two because (1) when she initially flinched at the pain he nearly died and (2) he was hit with the overwhelming feeling that his baby girl is growing up waaaaaay too fast!

Shereé is kind of a picky (and bougie) eater and that's what got Terrance into cooking in the first place!! He was a chronic doordasher before she came around! When Shereé tries something at a restaraunt and likes it, Terrance enjoys the challenge of making the dish at home "but better." He's successful about 45% of the time 😒 (lol).

I said in the OG post that Shereé wants to be "a superstar" when she grows up and that's because she loooooooves to sing, dance, and play her piano! I imagine she would be a drama club and choir girly, but if ballet was a thing in game she would do that as well! I also imagine she goes to weekly private piano lessons. She's just super damn talented and Terrance will tell anyone and everyone in the vicinity about it!

Terrance lets Shereé try out her new nail polish colors on him and sometimes they will even play spa, dress-up, makeover, fashion show, etc. Terrance does not GAF about boy game this girl game that he's just gonna play and make his daughter happy!

Like her peers she was not immune to the TikTok influencer Stanley cup madness unfortunately, but she is "Way too mature" to bully anyone! But tbh if Terrance found out she was being a bully over a damn cup he would toss that shit in the trash with a quickness anyway 😂

Shereé can be heard saying "You're too grown for that daddy" at least once a day. He will never escape the childish allegations, not even from his own daughter lmao.

When I went into their household in game the first autonomous thing Shereé did was complain about the heat... so I guess she doesn't like summer very much and especially doesn't like hot weather 😂

Also I got an ask about how to pronounce Shereé and I would pronounce is SHER-RAY as opposed to SHER-REE, if that makes sense. (I couldn't find a video with this specific pronunciation but if you've ever seen The Real Housewives of Atlanta I believe Shereé Whitfield pronounces it like this as well!!!)

RANDOM ASTRO OBSERVATIONS

These observations are based upon my personal interactions with these placements and energies. As a wise woman I know once said "take what resonates and leave the rest on the shelf, go back to it later, see if it resonates again, if not, throw it away".

as someone who knows fuck all about the met gala or the fashion world genuinely what is happening

so the met gala is a massive charity gala that happens annually as a fundraiser for the metropolitan museum of arts fashion institute. it is themed and each theme relates to the primary exhibit that will be held at the met costume institute for the year. the theme is not dress code, but the people who attend often dress in acordance or relation to the theme; a good met gala to look up some of the fashion for is the 2018 met gala 'heavenly bodies: fashion and the catholic imagination'

the tickets to the gala are $$$ as it is a charity for a high profile museum in new york city and usually who shows up to it tends to be celebrities of all sorts, influencers recently, some titans of industry, and some politicians

this year, the theme is in honor of karl lagerfeld. karl lagerfeld is a piece of shit. i hope he burns. he was head of chanel and considered critical to the revival of the brand and was heavily involved with it from the 80s to his death in 2019- the iconic chanel tweed suit is his doing. karl lagerfeld was openly misogynistic, against gay marriage (the whole interviews a fucking nightmare), and islamophobic (note the subtle antisemitism involved in his islamophobia too). he dismissed sexual assault frequently and defended his stylist who was accused of it. his parents were active members of the nazi party and that is how he got his financial start.

this information has all been available for decades. everyone knew lagerfeld has been a massive piece of shit since the early 2010s bare minimum and his only meaningful contributions to fashion were the revival of chanel and a few basic fucking pieces he essentially kept remaking. he was honestly quite good with runway staging concepts & sets but a lot of the time especially in his later years it was recycled material in the fashion lines he worked on. chanel was masturbatory self-referrentialism by the time of his death and still is, just more shapeless now. the only reason this is happening is because anna wintour (another rotted bitch) is on the met gala board and was besties with lagerfeld so shes probably behind this whole to-do

fashion blogs arent excited because its fucking lagerfeld, whats everyone gonna do. wear a chanel tweed suit and a bad white wig? & anyone into fashion with a sense of ethics is cringing because hes a piece of shit. in general its a stupid theme and its going to suck. plus vogue which does primary coverage of the met gala has switched to a subscription only model which means viewership and coverage of the met gala will be significantly reduced on top of all this lol. terrible year for annoying people who love fashion (me)

T&B Clothes and Style Analysis:

This all started when I was thinking of a way to try and get a better gauge on Ryan’s age, but then it started to kind of become it’s own thing. Basically, something I’ve noticed is how aspects of many (though not all) the character designs are indictive of the decade they grew up in.

Let’s start with the oldest of our heroes (I’m limiting it to heroes so this post won’t be any more massive than I’m sure it will already be).

Kotetsu and Antonio: We know that they are both 38 in S2, so that means they were born in 1942. So their childhood and teen years were the 1940s and 1950s, and you can see the influence of those time periods on their outfits.

Back in the 1940s and 1950s cowboy inspired fashion was very popular. My grandfather had a bit of this style too, and he was born sometime in the 1930s. Of course, Antonio’s outfit is also meant to reflect his NEXT persona as well, being Rock Bison and having, iirc, a meat sponsor.

Meanwhile, Kotetsu has that snazzy look about him. Clean cut, button up shirt, tie, sleek and ironed pants, button up vest - his look is, in a way, rather hip in comparison to Antonio’s look. I also feel is has more of an upscale, blue collar vibe to it than Antonio’s, which style originated with blue collar, “working on the farm,” and legit cowboy types. Of course, Kotetsu doesn’t hold himself in that way, though I do think that his outfit is what adds to the moe gap and charm of Kotetsu. He has this put together appearance to him, but his life is a mess and he can be very immature at times, lol.

Next, let’s take a look at our newest heroes, since the 1980s influence on their style is obvious. All three of them are teens, so it would make sense that their fashion style and sense would reflect the 80s the most.

Subaru’s is, imo, the easiest to draw a link to in regards to possible inspiration. The outfits aren’t an exact match, but that puffy life preserver like jacket + jean pants combo just screams Marty McFly. I know he is also meant to reflect the “Red Ranger” trope found in series like Super Sentai and stuff like that, but I also think that Subaru’s problems with being looked down on and such is similiar to Marty’s with his issues surrounding being called chicken and what not. They can both be impulsive and quick to anger in that regard.

Lara has a school uniform on or, at least, an outfit inspired by one. Obviously, there are some liberties taken with the design, certain elements to make it cuter and more in-line with how school uniforms are often depicted in anime. The blazer top is really what gives it the 1980s Japanese school uniform vibe though. And since Lara is meant to represent magical girls, it makes sense that she would be wearing a school uniform.

Thomas has the most..anime-like outfit of everyone, imo. His outfit isn’t something you would someone wearing just every day, ya know. I tried looking a bit into high fashion/runaway fashion and the like, but didn’t get very far with that. I think the aspects of his outfit that have some basis in the 1980s though is the combo of “very shiny leather jacket” + tight jean combo like we see MJ wearing in his Thriller MV.

Okay, so now let’s take a look at characters that we know the exact age of, or have a very good, general idea of how old they are. First up here is Barnaby.

Listen, Barnaby’s outfit really doesn’t have much going on in the way of 60s or 70s fashion (the eras when he was a teen), but his hair absolutely does! Without a doubt, the inspiration for Barnaby’s hair was Farrah Fawcett and her hairstyle became popular in the 1970s, when Barnaby would have been in his late teens and early 20s. He had more of a general shaggy hairstyle in the few flashbacks we see of him as a younger teen.

This chunky gold chain is also very 70s.

Now we are more in the “we have a general idea how old they are range, and it was confirmed via outside sources.” The one that I feel most concretely on this is Karina, who is 19 in S2. That means she was born in 1961 (one year earlier than my parents, lol) and her childhood was in the 1960s and her teen years were pretty solidly in the 1970s outside of 19.

Whenever I think of Karina’s dress in S1, I my mind just always goes to the kinds of short dresses that were really popular in the Brady Bunch era. Other elements of her design are definitely different, but that dress is such a key aspect. Her S2 design feels more mature and like Mary Tyler Moore-esque.

Ivan, I believe, is 21 in S2. I think it was confirmed, somewhere, that he was 18 in S1. So he is only a little bit older than Karina and his teen years were the 1970s, period. Design-wise Ivan is a complete fish out of water. At least Barnaby had the hair and jewelry tying him to the 60s and 70s. But Ivan is meant to be a Weeaboo, so that whole idea and concept is far later, and his visual appearance reflects that.

However! Edward Said’s book Orientalism, which goes on to describe the term as:

the exaggeration of difference, the presumption of Western superiority, and the application of clichéd analytical models for perceiving the "Oriental world". This intellectual tradition is the background for Said's presentation of Orientalism as a European viewpoint reflecting a contrived Manichean duality.

And that fits in with Ivan’s Weeaboo persona quite well. It’s a critical concept that is well known today (and which has a long standing documentation of existing before Said’s book was publish), but was only brought into the spotlight with this book in 1978.

The last character that we have a general idea of around about what age they are is Pao-lin. She was 13 or so in S1 and around 16 in S2.

The major inspiration for her outfit is obviously Kill Bill, lol. Especially with the martial arts and everything. But, of course, her S1 outfit also takes inspiration from jumpsuits that really gained popularity in the 1970s and tracksuits too. Her later outfits in The Rising and S2 are more masculine presenting and have her wearing tank tops and hoodies, both of which started becoming more commonplace as everyday wear in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. (This could also apply to Ivan, who is wearing a black tank top under his jacket.

Finally, we get into the characters whose ages are vague: Ryan, Nathan, and Keith. Now, Ryan is younger than Barnaby. That’s basically all we have to go off of really, but in The Beginning we can see that he looks in his late teens (he has a slimmer face similar to Thomas and Subaru).

His outfit there also has a very 70s disco vibe about it. Though the hair and other aspects of it are also a bit late 90s/early 2000s in feel too. His earlier designs were quite 60s and 70s inspired too:

The one in the top left almost feeling New Wave / Hippie-ish to some extent (a part of me would have loved if they went with that design, but I love his current design too). His outfit in The Rising (and S2, which I won’t even bother talking about here) are a bit more: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ design-wise.

The closest stuff I could find were like sports jerseys/sport shirts from the 70s and those shorts pictured, lmao. Those shorts are a bit shorter than Ryan’s, and they don’t have the more visually appealing hanging material, etc. But they do show how there were these sort of long shorts/pants in that era as well. Though, visually, Ryan still fits more in the 2000s era here. I started this whole research and post hoping that some of Ryan’s outfit could give more insight into his age...but nope, lol.

Anyway, our final two are Nathan and Keith. Nathan has made statements that make it seem that she is older than Barnaby and Keith, but likely not quite as old as Kotetsu and Antonio. I’ve always assumed that Nathan was in their 30s. Placing their teen years closer to the late 50s and 60s.

And while a lot of Nathan’s outfits can just be simplified to the idea of being flamboyant, I feel a lot of Nathan’s presence and the air about them is very similar to the Ballroom Scene of the 60s:

While the outfits are not one-for-one matches, there are similarities in posing, feathers, mesh, color choices, and just the outlines that are created. I will say that the shoulder pads in Nathan’s S1 outfit are far more 80s though, lol.

Edit: I realized I forgot to explain what the Ballroom Scene even is and how it relates very specifically to Nathan’s gender identity. From the Wikipedia page:

The Ballroom Scene is an African-American and Latino underground LGBTQ+ subculture that originated in New York City. Beginning in the late 20th century, Black and Latino drag queens began to organize their own pageants in opposition to racism experienced in established drag queen pageants. [...] While the initial establishment of Ballroom mimicked these drag queen pageants, the inclusion of gay men and trans women would transform the Ballroom scene into what it is today: a multitude of categories that all LGBTQ+ people can participate in.

There is a fantastic documentary on this whole subculture and scene called Paris is Burning (link is to the YT video of the full documentary). I watched it back in college in my Queer Studies class. It’s very enlightening and insightful, but it does deal with some heavy topics (SA, suicide, etc.). I definitely suggest giving it a watch if you can though!

Edit: Some more excellent information on Nathan's and Pao-lin's styles. Pao-lin's connection to Bruce Lee and Nathan's fashion connection to the 1970s glam era + visual kei (his The Rising outfit).

FINALLY! We have Keith. His age is completely unknown. I’ve always felt that he was closer in age to Barnaby than Kotetsu and Antonio. His outfit really doesn’t tell us much. It’s a very “All-American, Hard Worker” guys kinda outfit. Definitely something you would find in the 70s (image pictured above is from the 70s) and 80s, though his pants are more 80s-like than 70s (more straight than flared).

(Though, looking at that above image, it seems like Barnaby’s big belt is also very 70s-ish!).

Anyway, I feel I can’t talk about Keith and his appearance and style without also mentioning this:

Keith looks like Tom Cruise, and once you see and know that, you cannot unsee it either, lmao.

I hope I’m not bothering but, can you do a headcanon of reader who comes from 2023 and she is a hugee Levi admirer but she doesn’t really show it because she believes that he would never feel the same fore her, cuz he doesn’t really believe her when she told Erwin, him, Hange + the other vets that she comes from our world and he just acts cold towards her. After some months I think she would tell Hange, who becomes her best friend that she admires Levi a lot and Hange accidentally tells Levi when he complains about not trusting reader. How would he react? I mean maybe he did complain but all the months reader has been there he noticed she’s not a bad influence, she really cares about people and she’s struggles at training.🫶

An old-fashioned girl

How she arrived there was a mystery, even for herself. One morning she was on a school trip recording a tik tok dance with a classmate and the other she was in the middle of nowhere. ‘A forest?’ she thought ‘in the middle of Rose?’ Important to highlight that she didn’t refer to it as Wall Rose because… walls were a thing from history books, too many decades ago.

Sneakers sinked on the frost as it crunched under her weight. Her eyes searched for a sign of a crosspath, somewhere with stepped on grass that would guide her, a rubbish bin that would have some map on it. Her mind began to wonder if she had fallen asleep on the way there and her friends had played her a really bad joke.

“IT’S NOT FUNNY!” She shouted.

But nobody replied.

“Come on guys! This is not going to get you that many visits on youtube”

Grave silence. The fear started to creep in as her feet took one step after the other and she reached nowhere. Turning over her heels, hectic eyes searching to spot a difference in the repetitive background of leafless trees. Her lips parted, the air that came through her nose wasn’t enough anymore. Checking her phone again, something was definitely off. No signal, no internet, not even a single Wifi close by.

She had repeatedly called 911 hoping that the emergency line would work anyways, somehow. Nothing. She ran, ran for her life and, as if her senses sharpened on the necessity of fighting for her life, she began to spot how off the situation felt. ‘There’s not a single piece of rubbish on the ground’

At some point, she grew tired and soon hoped to have chosen the P.E uniform over the regular one because raising her skirt up against some dressing codes and only wearing mid leg’s socks wasn’t helping to fight the cold. Her own arms wrapped around her frame, trying to provide any warmth and a sense of security. Soon she realised how the school uniform was made for staying inside the building, with calefaction.

Because the white button up shirt with small red and green lines, the thin burgundy sweater that was slightly too big for her frame compared to the small tartan english green and maroon skirt that she raised up after leaving her house (so her mom wouldn’t complain that it didn’t reach her knees) wasn’t keeping her warm. She had had a burst of confidence that morning, her crush told her she looked cute and her friend and her recorded a Tiktok. She remembered all that… How did she get there?

“HELP!!” screaming from the top of her lungs, anyone, someone. Not trying to lose hope, she insisted on it even if her throat began to hurt. Refusing to take her water bottle out of her backpack, fearing that she may need to ration it. Suddenly, her mind tried to come up with all those ideas that people in movies didn’t have in a case of extreme conditions.

A sound pierced through the silence. It felt overwhelmingly loud and high, as if a plane’s gears were ringing right on top of her. It was like nothing she heard before, covering her ears with her hands and closing her eyes in slight pain. It was sudden and terrifying.

“Oi, what’s going on here?” The man landed on the floor as if it was nothing. He walked slowly towards her, putting away some sort of control under a jacket as he moved closer.

“Captain!” A younger voice called from the top of a tree. She raised to look up, an ash blond guy that landed on a tree as … ‘as if he is spiderman or something, what the hell’ “Do we keep going with morning practise?”

More people appeared, all of them with a sort of uniform that she described as ‘Those seem awfully uncomfortable… what’s wrong with these people, all dressed up as some sort of freak avengers.’

The short man just nodded to the others that were spectant of his orders before turning around to face the girl. “Civilians are not allowed on the training fields.” His voice was deep and demanding as he got closer. His steps forwards were confident, completely opposite to hers that slowly dragged her frame backwards.

“Sir, please. May you call my mom? My phone is not working and I don’t have any signal” Leaving aside any fear of how absurd the situation felt, she insisted on reaching for help.

The man stopped and frowned in confusion “You’re lost.” he affirmed but there were tints of unsureness on the declaration, as he tried to understand her.

“Yes! I was with my class on a trip to the national park here in Rose and I don’t really understand what happened. I tried calling the police-”

“The police?” He interrupted her “Here? In wall Rose?”

The brief silence as they both tried to understand each other.

“Yes! But I couldn’t find anyone from the national park until now-”

“National park” He was repeating her words as some broken record and she was starting to lose her patience.

“Sir, please. I just want to call my mom and tell her I’m alright. Could you lend me your phone?” Her voice levels kept rising as it also broke in desperation.

The repeat mentions of words that the man had never heard before started to make him doubt her sanity. His cold eyes that had been doing strict eye contact travelled down to her clothes and frowned deeply.

His lack of action made her break in tears, why was he taking so long? Was he going to help her or worse… hurt her? Panic finally unleashed as she started to hyperventilate and cry. That somehow made him snap.

“Calm down, kid” He reached forward and she quickly walked backwards “I’ll take you back to the building until whatever you’re high on washes off,”

She created more resistance than he expected, usually people recognised him or the scouts uniform. Either to respect the law or to search for help. She was not following any. She swore that there were no words to express how grateful she was for her phone, ipad and the rest of the electronics on her backpack. Because, otherwise, she wouldn't have been able to explain without being considered mental unstable that she wasn’t from there.

Well, technically, she was from there. She had lived in Paradise all her life but not from 850 Paradise, definitely not. Or the walls as they called it, apparently Paradise was a term for the island that they hadn’t found out about just yet. The first week, they were all quite sceptical. Hange was extremely curious and made her feel not so alone. The squad leader insisted on spending as much time as possible with her, trying to understand the situation deeply.

Erwin asked plenty of questions, calm, relaxed. As he had all the time in the world to allow her to feel safe, she felt like a rat in a lab. Everybody had their eyes fixed on her and what she did. He seemed convinced of her innocence. The Commander didn’t set many rules, only two; first, that she didn’t leave the building for her own safety. Second, that she changed clothes because they could be a bit “distracting” apparently.

The comment felt offensive and she wished to talk back. Insist on her freedom to wear what she pleased without consequences, that it was her body and her choice. The rebellion of refusing to change lasted shortly as soon as she realised how easily the other teens blushed deeply looking at her bare legs. Adding to that, checking what the other female cadets wore once out of the uniform made her feel quite self conscious.

After a couple of weeks, even though she had shut down all the devices, the phone didn’t turn on anymore. The afternoons were long and boring. Most of them began to talk to her more freely. She played cards with the teens when they were done with their duties. Talked to Hange as they worked. Even asked Erwin for a spare notebook and pencil, if he had any, to write down a sort of diary. He agreed, even insisted that it may be a good idea. Only Levi refused to acknowledge her. Despite being the first one she encountered, he was the last to believe her.

The differences between her time and that one began to become more noticeable each passing day. Clothes were itchy and hard, soon she concluded that elastic was the best thing humans invented after the internet. “Mattress” was a bold word for those empty long pillows they slept in. Everything was humid, tasteless and dark. ‘Correction, deodorant may be the best invention after taking regular showers,’ She didn’t blame them, water seemed like a scarce resource and Captain Levi, who barely talked to her, seemed to have a passion to scold her.

Even if he was the only one who somehow maintained a level of modern society standard of hygiene, he found her actions abusive.

“You’re going to use all the water of the walls”

“You changed clothes yesterday, you think wood grows on the trees?”

On and on. It appeared that the mighty hero she read in her history books was a short annoying man.

Food tasted horrendous, and water didn’t seem that drinkable. The cadets invited her to train, just to spare some time. After all she was far from military training and Levi refused to give her any real weapon, including the 3dmg. How they were able to resist those harsh conditions with just some boiled potato in their stomach was a mystery to her.

‘I’m never going to romanticise old dresses and cottagecore again,’ They killed a chicken for dinner and she almost fainted when she saw it. Despite being tired of eating only boiled veggies, remembering the animal alive as she watched the chicken’s breast on her dish made her appetite disappear.

One day in particular, the cadets were taken to the industrial city with Hange. Erwin had left to deal with some particular details at the Capital and YN had finally found herself alone. Alone to face dinner time.

Grown tired of those itchy long skirts and uncomfortable not elastic white trousers; she decided that since no one was around, no one was there to judge her modern clothes. Back on the uniform, arm crossed as she squinted in determination.

“I do not fear you,” She murmured as if the inanimate object could understand her “I’m a woman of a free country, with high end education, the power of equal rights and the blessing of having lived until now in the same period of time of Rihanna and Taylor Swift. I’m stoppable”

Suddenly a strong breeze came in from the window and blew off the only shakable candle she had turned on. The place went pitch black.

“No, no, no!” She insisted as she tried to turn it back on. It was a regular problem in her life now, candles blow off stupidly easily. The habit of always searching for the light switches as she entered a room wasn’t abandoning her yet and it always left a feeling of disappointment.

The light came back again and she scoffed pridefully, as if she had discovered fire. The fire trembled under her breath and her eyes opened in fear it may turn off again.

“Omg, candles have the stability of my mental health,” She murmured and then chuckled to herself “That would have been such a tweet,”

Quickly she grew conscious of her monologue and became slightly ashamed. Back to business, she turned around to face her fears… the wood cookstove. Or so she guessed, there was wood around so it must have required that, right?

“I got a A in calculus 3, I can turn on a stove,”

She opened what seemed to be a place with ashes and threw a bunch of hard-wood logs all together, turned on a match and threw it inside. It turned on and she jumped of happiness. Moving quickly to chop some potatoes and carrots to cook a soap, she began to sing “A single mom who works two jobs. Who loves her kids and never stops. With gentle hands and a heart of a fighter!”

Moving back to the stove to check on it as she danced around. “I'm a surviv– …or?” Her mood dropped significantly as she realised the fire was off. Frowning in confusion, she tried again.. And again… and … again.

“Maybe I’m not truly hungry, I’m just anxious. '' She cried out loud between heavy and loud whinings. Messy tears ran down her cheeks as she was sitting down on the kitchen floor eating the raw carrots she had previously chopped. “Where is my ASMR playlist when I need it?”

“What the fuck are you doing down there?”

Levi’s deep quiet voice echoed in the stone room, making her snap her head up to her left. He wasn’t wearing the uniform, at least not completely. White trousers, the tall combat boots but combined with a black turtleneck sweater. He had heavy dark circles under his eyes and he didn’t seem happy to see her.

“How long have you been here?” She questioned as she raised.

“All day,”

“I thought you left with the rest,” her voice was soft as she noticed his lack of interest in keeping a conversation going.

“No,”

“What have you been doing?”

“Work,”

YN stood there, wet face, crystal eyes as he moved around the kitchen. The jug he brought with him was back to being full with water. When he turned around, his eyes moved naturally to her clothes and then back to her face. She still had a half eaten raw carrot on her hand as her puppy eyes begged him for some compassion.

“What do you what?” Levi shot the question as he had no time to spare.

“I’m hungry,”

“I’m not your mother, nor your babysitter. Cook yourself something,” His ice-cold reply made her realise why she had been crying on the floor and the tears appeared again.

“I can’t, the stove doesn’t work,” She whined.

Somehow that made him concerned, taking long steps to the stove, grabbed a special type of gripper that was hanging on the side, raised some steel circled from the top and checked.

“Tch, of course it's not going to work if you put the damn wood on the ashtray,” The captain complained as if it was obvious. Pushing his sleeves up to expose his forearms and not get the clothes dirty, he grabbed the logs and took them off. “If you think I’m idiot enough to believe that you don’t know how to turn a damn stove on, you’re mistaken.”

She remained silent, her quietness made him snap back to see her.

“You don’t know how to turn a damn stove on? What are you? Some wealthy brat or something?”

She didn’t reply right away, it was becoming exhausting how after all this time he didn’t believe her narrative. “Where I come from, stoves are different,” her low voice made the words come out stuck together. But he understood.

“Yeah… where you come from.” He insisted on pure disdain.

It was borderline offensive in her humble opinion. The man she had read a lot in her history lessons, how dedicated he was to the cause, how altruist he was to help the little kids after the uprising. Nothing of that correlated to the man that was there. ‘Maybe this is why they tell you meeting your heroes it’s not a good idea,’

Under his scrutiny, he realised that despite his cadets and her being probably the same age, she appeared younger. ‘War turns children into adults quicker,’ he concluded, considering that whatever she said was real. True or not, Levi quick realise that whatever she was, she was a fucking brat. One that was crying in the kitchen because of hunger. He felt stupid for a second for giving a cold shoulder to a kid.

“I’m making myself a stew, if you want some say it now” He said and her face brightened up instantly.

“Yes, please!”

Her eyes followed his actions attentively, old stoves definitely had more than a single trick on them (compared to modern ones, obviously). Levi opened the air conduction, so it would escape, checked something called “stove control” and left it open, then the top damper needed to be opened too. He grabbed some twigs and deadfall, only added one hardwood log and turned all that on with a piece of paper from the ash door and then closed it.

The difference was rapidly noticeable, it lid and roared quickly. Once it began to look warmer, he added larger bits of kindling from the top and regulated the temperature with what appeared to be some side grating. She chopped more vegetables and the room was filled up with the cracking of the fire. Levi didn’t talk, just haste his pace around the room as he multitasked the preparation.

Milk was in some steel container, the pot was placed on top of the stove despite the fire not being in direct contact, the spices were hung from the roof to dry them up. ‘Life is easier when you just have to order a big mac on ubereats,’

“You’re quite the chef, Captain,” Her enthusiastic voice echoed in the empty room as she watched the meal boil with dreamy eyes. Quick side eyes from his part as he mixed the stew around with a wooden spoon.

“This is so aesthetic, we could have posted on instagram” She kept admiring how rustic the wood cookstove looked with the chopped wood to a side, the wooden spoon and the stone wall “Being happy is simple, what is hard is enjoying simple things. That would have been a great caption,”

They looked eyes, she smiled at him, he kept frowning.

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Levi’s monotone voice, despite its natural uninteresting tone on it, sounded slightly confused as he was doing an effort to understand anything she said.

“It’s a place where you put pictures so others may see how your life is,”

“What's a picture?”

“It’s like a drawing but extremely realistic and done instantly,”

Levi’s thin eyebrows were still drawn together as it seemed almost like whichcraft what she was describing “Why would anyone care what your meals look like,”

“It’s fun! So everybody knows what you’re doing all the time,”

“That sounds like a fucking nightmare”

“You say that because you’ve not seen those in deep cleaning videos and vacuums’ reviews”

“What the fuck is a vacuum?”

“Oh dear…”

PD: did I have to search how a wood cookstove worked to do this story? Yes. Did I watch a youtube video of 45 minutes? Obviously. Do I deserve a kudos for that? absolutely haha
