For the generated AUs, I got Supernatural Is Known AU + Orphanage AU ^^
Okay but Caleb Covington's Home For Extraordinary Orphans. He's not exactly evil, but after 20-plus years of dealing with everything from mermaids to were-elephants, he is Grumpy.
The Molinas always wanted a big family. Most Werewolves do. Something about a big pack just makes them happy. Not all of them turn, Julie and Victoria don't, but Rose, Ray, and Carlos do. (There have been So Many Arguments in the past about Carlos chewing on Julie's shoes.)
Except Rose found out that after her cancer, she wouldn't be able to have any more kids. They'd been trying for some time but hadn't had any more after Carlos, and now there was no more chance to have any at all. They mourn for a year, before talking it over as a family and deciding that pack is pack and they don't need to be blood related to be family. When Julie is fourteen and Carlos is ten, they finally get approved to adopt.
Victoria goes with them, if only to make sure they don't 'bite off more than they can chew'.
They meet a lot of kids, and just like Victoria expected, they want to take home Everyone. She has to be the voice of reason that no, they do not have a big enough back yard to convert into a lake to adopt that mermaid girl. And adopting Willie, the raccoon shifter, was a terribly unsafe idea because Carlos still hadn't learned to control his chasing-prey instinct. Do they not remember the ordeal with the Henderson's cat?
Eventually, Carlos and Julie come running up to their parents, dragging just about the palest young boy Rose has ever seen.
"Mami, this is Reggie!" Carlos proudly proclaims. "He likes dogs and music and pizza so he has to be our big brother."
Reggie is a sixteen year old vampire who is just grateful he got turned after he was allowed to drive. It's better than being fourteen for the rest of his (after)life, that would be rough. Oh shoot sorry Julie. It gets better, he promises.
Ray and Rose are just so charmed by Reggie and the way he naturally fell into a big brother role for Julie and Carlos that they decide yes, they will adopt a sixteen year old vampire. No they do not care that he won't age. Once he actually matures mentally into adulthood (which vampires do, just a lot slower than than humans) they will help him get emancipated.
Victoria is not there to talk them out of it. Victoria, in fact, is in Caleb's office, getting the paperwork done to adopt Willie.
("What? I said it was dangerous for him to be around Carlos until he gets his prey instinct under control during the full moon. I don't turn, my prey instinct is fine! The only thing I hunt is a good bargain.")
So they take Reggie and Willie home, and things are great. Willie and Reggie were friends at the orphanage, they get together for Family Dinners every Friday except on Full Moons, everything is great. Reggie fits in really well and admits that even before he was turned ten years ago, he didn't have a great family, so having two parents that care about him is really nice.
Except sometimes Reggie acts in a way that can't be attributed to being a vampire, or adopted, or maybe a little traumatised from spending ten years in an orphanage run by a grumpy werepanther. He zones out, and sometimes he talks to himself, or laughs at nothing. Ray and Rose love Reggie, and are fully willing to support their new son and all his quirks (Ray immediately started learning about Star Wars when he realised Reggie was obsessed), but they also want to make sure this isn't anything mental illness related that will hurt him.
So they talk about getting Reggie evaluated, about asking Doctor Turner if she has any recommendations for therapists who specialise in vampirism... But Reggie overhears them.
And then Rose overhears Reggie. Talking to himself in his room again. Except this time it's not under his breath.
"No dude, don't worry about it. I'll just... I'll make something up. I mean, you've always said that I might be autistic, maybe we can just... Nobody's going to find out and send you back, I promise."
Which is of course when Rose pushed open the door before adopting a now Very Familiar Pose to Reggie. The Mom Pose. Hands on her hips, eyebrow raised.
The boy on Reggie's bed slowly started going invisible again, and Rose pointed at him. "Don't you dare!"
He stops fading out of view. He looks to be about Reggie's age.
"Can you just turn invisible, or are you a ghost?" Rose asks. "Because if I find out you've been letting someone go hungry under our roof, Reginald, you are grounded, mister."
"I'm a ghost," the boy in the bed said. "I'm so sorry, it's just that, you were taking Reggie, and your sister was taking Willie, and they're all I have and I just couldn't stay there and I'm so so sorry..."
The more he talks the more solid he looks and Rose is not sure if that's a good thing or not, so she just interrupts him. "Right, we need to call Caleb right now."
"No, don't send him back!" Reggie said. "Send me back instead, please, you'll love Alex, he's great, he's funny and cool and he likes music and pizza too. I mean he can't eat it anymore but-"
"We're not sending anyone back," Rose promises, wrapping Reggie in a hug and hovering a hand near Alex' shoulder. "But we do have to arrange some paperwork so Ray and I don't get brought up on any kidnapping charges, alright?"

Just a not very quick writing for a Revive-AU/After-Trimax-Canon I most likely will never finish. But I like it, so here it is.
“Can I check you up?” Vash’s hands are already anxiously stroking Wolfwood’s cheeks. Wolfwood chuckles, tilting his head, eyes glinting in amusement, ready to appease Vash’ curiosity. “Yer already grabbin’ me, Spikey.” Vash pouts, but takes it as a yes. There are three things that always stood out about Wolfwood for Vash, if he excludes the awful fashion sense, the nose, the physique and the piercing glare of his eyes.
The nose, at least, is still there. Vash would have missed it. He thumbs over it. Wolfwood laughs and squirms in his grip. Vash’ hands slide lower, over his neck, the shoulders, the arms. Wolfwood is warm, he has always been warm. Kudos to the experimentations. He’s broader than Vash remembers and may have gained an inch or two. Well, he overdosed on the vials. Vash’ smile falters, momentarily.
“Vash…,” the softness of Wolfwood’s voice does not help. Wolfwood grabbing his elbows and rubbing his thumbs in soothing circles does not help, either. Vash’ organic hand rests on Wolfwood’s chest. It needs to be there right now. The heartbeat is strong, it is even. More than he could ever wish for.
The last thing, the last thing he just has to check. It scares him the most. Carefully, Vash removes the shades from Wolfwood’s face. Wolfwood’s smile stays on, though it loses its warmth. The room is far from bright, Chronica has ordered dimmed lights as soon as she recognised the photosensitivity. Nevertheless, Wolfwood squints in obvious discomfort, barely able to keep his eyes open.
“Yeah, sorry ‘bout that, Spikey. Musta been comfortably dark in hell for me to become that much of a wuss ‘bout a bit of light.”
But the eyes…
Vash climbs on Wolfwood’s lap, kneeling on the bed and towering over Wolfwood to block out the light source. Wolfwood’s hands find Vash’ hips to hold him steady as well as to continue the caressing. “I really need to see them, Nico.”
Wolfwood sighs: “I never thought that it would be my eyes that haunt you.” He winks, but opens his eyes for Vash to inspect. “Whatever you need, Vash…”
>>Look! See? Spikey? This is who I really am…<<
Endlessly tired and bereft of their last spark of hope. So soft, so sad and so broken. A journey at its premature end. A life lived, but robbed of joy and heartfelt laughter. It has been unfair. But there has not been any energy left to rise up against the injustice. Just acceptance for the inevitable. His will, gone.
>>It’s been a good run. I have so much to thank for.<<
It’s the same eyes. Same as they have always been. But their expression is locked in their worst moment. Wolfwood has lost his glare and Vash is unable to put any blame on him for that. No one can meet death and say it hasn’t changed them. The emptiness of Wolfwood’s stare is powerful. It screams for help, silently. Vash kisses Wolfwood’s eyelids, while his mind starts to run. A sense of belonging, his self-imposed duty, his identity? Is it something Vash can even help repair?
Wolfwood laughs anxiously at the caressing actions. “Do I look that shitty?”
Vash nods. “You look like Wolfwood.”
“...”
“...”
“...Spikey, did you just insult my whole person?”
“Yes,” Vash hesitates until it clicks. “I mean, it was an accident!”
“And now you’re saying I was an accident!,” it is forced. They both know it. “I mean, yer right. Wouldn’t have landed in the orphanage otherwise.”
They both need it. “Wolfwood! NO!” It has been too big, too much of a struggle to take it on as a whole. For now, comfort. Then, slowly but surely, Vash will find the broken pieces and put them back together.

Lost and Found
Chapter 3
The case on Rosie's missing parents has been declared cold as Ingo, Emmet, and Piers suspect it was a case of abandonment. Now, Rosie has to decide where she wants to live now that her parents aren't returning for her. Also, Ingo deals with paperwork.
This is my self indulgent story where Ingo adopts a daughter, and you can read the first chapters here and here. You can also check my Subway Boss Rosie tag for more.
Also, shout out to @hoofpeet who came up with the last name for Ingo and Emmet and was kind enough to let me use it for fanfic purposes!
Words: 2,310
Rating: PG (ask to tag)
Rosie had a decision to make. Go to a foster home or an orphanage, or stay with Mr. Ingo and his family.
That night had been a pretty fitful night for Rosie. She had initially fallen asleep easily from the emotional exhaustion, but she later woke up during the night and fell in and out of sleep until morning. As light crept into the room through the window's curtains, she pulled the blanket up over her head to try and block it out. She was tired, but the amount of thoughts she had swimming in her brain was keeping her awake. It was all so frustrating. A few tears landed on the pillow. Oh. She was crying again.
It wasn't fair. None of this was fair. Why had her parents left her? Did she do something wrong? Did they not love her anymore? Where did they go and why did they leave her at the subway? Rosie doubted she would ever be able to answer any of these questions.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
"Um, Rosie?" It was Mr. Ingo. "I am sorry, but I heard crying. Are you alright? May I come in?"
"...Come in," Rosie whimpered. The door opened and Mr. Ingo walked in, still in his pajamas. He sat down on the edge of the bed.
"I understand you're going through a lot right now. Do you want to talk about it?" Mr. Ingo asked. "If not, that's okay too. Whatever makes you most comfortable."
Rosie sat up and scooted closer to lean against him. Mr. Ingo wrapped an arm around her. She sat quietly like this as she tried to gather her thoughts into words.
"Mr. Ingo? Why did my mommy and daddy leave?" she finally asked.
"I... I do not know," he said, seemingly a little startled by her question.
"Did I do something wrong?"
"No." His answer was immediate and firm. "No, you did nothing wrong. I may not know why they left, but Rosie, I know that it was not your fault. If they had any issues with you, that was your parents' problem, not your's. There's nothing wrong that you could've done to make them leave. So please, don't blame yourself for this. Okay?"
Rosie nodded. Even though a small part of her still felt like she had done something to drive them away, Mr. Ingo's confidence in his words made that part of her shrink even smaller. He seemed so sure that Rosie had done nothing wrong, and it was comforting to hear him say that so firmly.
"Mr. Ingo, what would happen if I go to a foster home or an orphanage?"
"Well, we would make a good list of options and we would make sure that whatever home or orphanage takes you will be a good one," he explained, "and once you find one you like, you'll live there until you're adopted or until you're old enough to move out on your own."
"And if I stay here?" She wanted to know what both of her options were like before making a decision.
"I would sign off on the papers to officially adopt you and we would set up Marnie's room so that you could have a bed there and share the room with her. I would also make sure to find you a good school to go to, we would buy you plenty of new clothes, toys, and books, or anything else you might need, and I would simply be here to take care of you for as long as you need."
"So... you would be my new dad?" she asked.
"Oh, well, on paper, I suppose, yes," he replied, a little awkwardly. "But you would not have to force yourself to call me that if you don't want to."
Rosie thought about it. Getting sent to a foster home or orphanage would mean having to get used to a whole new place and all new people. And if she would be adopted by someone afterwards, that's another new situation to get used to. She didn't really like the idea of having to change and get used to so many new situations. But here with Mr. Ingo was nice. She liked him and Mr. Emmet, and Mr. Piers was really nice too, and she really liked playing with Marnie. She knew these people now and had gotten used to them. If she stayed here, she wouldn't have to move around as much and they all seemed ready to let her stay with them.
"You wouldn't mind letting me stay here?" She had to be sure. She had to know that this option was okay.
"Of course. I already discussed this option with Emmet and Piers, and last night after you went to bed, Marnie also said she wouldn't mind if you stayed with us."
"But what do you think, Mr. Ingo? Would you be okay with me staying here?" Mr. Ingo held her a little closer and it only took him a moment to think of his answer.
"Rosie, I'd be happy to take care of you and have you live with us. If you do choose to live elsewhere, then that's fine as well, but I will also happily accept you into this family if you choose to stay with us."
Rosie had her answer now. She buried her face on his shoulder as she hugged him. Mr. Ingo hugged her back.
"I... I wanna stay with you," Rosie said into his shirt.
"Then we can start talking about getting things prepared to have you stay here," he said. "Would you like to go shopping and pick out a new bed frame and new clothes?"
Rosie could only nod as Mr. Ingo rubbed her back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next few days were busy. They got Rosie a new bed and set it up on one side of Marnie's room. The room was split into two sides, with Marnie's belongings being pushed to one side while Rosie's new bed, new toys, and new dresser of clothes was set up on the other side. Along with getting the necessities for Rosie, they also had to get the paperwork filled out for the adoption. Luckily, Drayden, being a government official as the mayor of Opelucid City was more than happy to help. So, about a week later, Ingo and Rosie arrived in Opelucid to meet with Ingo's uncle.
After stepping out of the subway, Ingo held Rosie's hand and guided her through Opelucid to the government building where Drayden worked when he wasn't running his gym. They walked into his office where Drayden was sitting at his desk, waiting patiently for their arrival.
"Ah, there you are, Ingo. I'm glad you could make it," Drayden said. He stood from his desk and Rosie shyly hid behind Ingo a little.
"Uncle Drayden, thank you for helping me with the paperwork," Ingo said with a respectful nod. He then turned to the girl currently hiding behind him. "Rosie, this is my uncle, Drayden. He is the mayor of Opelucid, as well as the dragon type gym leader. And Uncle, this is Rosie."
Drayden bent down on one knee to lower himself closer to Rosie's height, then held out a hand to her.
"Rosie, it is a pleasure to meet you. I am sorry to hear about your parents, but you are in good hands with my nephew here," he said. His beard covered most of the lower half of his face, but the way his eyes crinkled upwards and the way his beard shifted, it was evident that he was smiling. Rosie took his hand and they shook.
"Hi Mr. Drayden. It's nice to meet you," she said politely.
Drayden nodded and stood back up, then guided them towards his desk. He sat down behind the desk while Ingo and Rosie sat in two chairs on the opposite side. He then slid a stack of papers and a pen over to Ingo.
"These are the papers you'll need to fill out and sign," Drayden explained. "I have already filled out anything that was my responsibility. Some of this is a report on the situation with Rosie's parents and you'll just need to sign that we're calling this a cold case. Then we have the papers to make you Rosie's legal guardian." Ingo nodded and turned to Rosie. She had a small activity pad and a pencil that she brought along with her.
"I will try to be quick about this," he said apologetically. "After we're finished, I'll take you somewhere for lunch."
"Okay, thanks," Rosie said with a smile. She then opened up the activity pad and flipped through the pages until she found a page with a connect the dots picture. She started to connect the dots and form the image, and Ingo turned to fill out the paperwork.
For a good while, Drayden simply directed Ingo through the paperwork while Rosie kept herself busy. Ingo was no stranger to paperwork, since the subway occasionally required different forms to be completed, but it was still tiring work. Ingo couldn't decide if he preferred doing this or some of his harder, more physically challenging tasks in Hisui. This was at least much more boring than any of his warden duties.
Eventually, they got through most of the paperwork and he was now filling out the actual adoption portion of the stack. After signing his name for the hundredth time, Ingo handed the paper to his uncle, then waited to be told what part of the next page to fill out now.
"Ah, this is a name changing form," Drayden explained. "It's in case Rosie wants to change her last name now that she's being adopted."
Ingo turned to Rosie. They hadn't really discussed this beforehand. To be honest, the idea of changing her last name hadn't even been a thought in Ingo's mind until now.
"Rosie," Ingo lightly tapped her on the shoulder to get her attention. She looked up. "I know we haven't discussed it until now, but would you like to change your last name to mine?" She seemed to think about it for a moment.
"What is your last name?" She asked.
Oh. He hadn't told her that yet, had he?
"Ah, my last name is Treyn. Ingo Treyn." Rosie giggled a bit.
"Train? Like a subway train?"
"Oh, no, Treyn. T-R-E-Y-N." He took her activity book and wrote the name on a blank space for her to see it spelled out.
"Treyn," she said, testing the name out. "It does still sound like train though," Rosie pointed out. "Which is funny 'cause you work with trains!"
"I suppose that's true." Ingo had never really paid much attention to his last name, but now that Rosie pointed it out to him, it was pretty funny how that worked out. "So, would you like to change your last name? If not, I won't force you to."
Rosie thought for a moment, then wrote her first name in front of Treyn. Rosie Treyn. She looked at it and seemed to be deep in thought about it. Suddenly, her eyes filled with tears. Ingo quickly wrapped an arm around her.
"Rosie! What's wrong?" he asked worriedly. She sniffled and dropped the activity pad and the pencil, then she moved to sit on his lap as she hugged him. Ingo held her and rubbed small circles into her back.
"I'm getting adopted," Rosie said in a quiet voice. "You're actually adopting me."
She was just realizing that now. Or at least, it was all finally hitting her that this was truly happening. And Ingo could understand how she felt. As he held her in his arms with the name Rosie Treyn swirling in his mind, it was just now hitting him that he was signing the paperwork to legally make her his daughter. He now had a little girl to raise and take care of. And she now had a whole new family.
"Yes, I'm adopting you." Ingo eventually found the words to speak as he continued holding her. "You're still okay with that, right?" She nodded.
"Yeah, it's more than okay," she mumbled in between sniffles. "A-and I wanna change my last name."
"You do? You're sure?"
"Uh-huh. I wanna be Rosie Treyn."
Ingo smiled a little as he gave her a gentle squeeze.
"Then welcome to the family, Rosie."
This earned him a few sniffles and giggles from Rosie, who seemed to refuse to uncouple from him. That was fine. He leaned forward and filled out the name change form. Rosie Treyn. From there, he continued to fill out the rest of the paperwork with Rosie on his lap. Luckily, it didn't take long after that to finish the paperwork. Drayden collected the stack and made sure it was all organized, then he signed his name on the last page and stamped it to show it was all official.
"I'll make copies of all this for you later," Drayden explained. "But for now, it's official. Welcome to the family." Rosie looked up with slightly red eyes and smiled faintly.
"Thank you," she said quietly.
Ingo smiled a little and wiped at the few tears that still clung to her face.
"Would you like to get something to eat?" Ingo asked. "We can go wherever you want."
"Yeah, I'm hungry," Rosie said as she leaned her head on Ingo's shoulder. "Can we go to McDelibird's?"
"Of course," he said with a nod. He then turned to Drayden. "Uncle Drayden, are you free to join us?"
"I'll let my secretary know that I'll be out," he replied.
With that, Ingo helped Rosie stand up and picked up her activity booklet, then he took her hand and walked out with her, followed by Drayden. Their first meal together officially as a family.
Title: His Worst Nightmare
Pairings: Levi x fem! reader
Summary: You're one of the most skilled Captain of Survey Corps but during one of the expeditipn outside the walls some of your Squad's horses were killed. As a captain you wanted to save them, you knew you can survive outside the walls but your squad may not be able to because all of them are tired so you chose to be left outside the walls and you fend for yourself.
Warnings: None might appear to be a little sad though.
Word Count: 2000+
••••••
“Captain! Most of our horses were crushed by the Titans, we won't be able to meet with Commander Erwin and Captain Levi!”
Your grip on your weapon tightened as you saw the terrified look on your comrades' faces, most of them were young yet skilled but you knew this kind of scenario would really shake them up because this is dead end.
“Take the remaining horses and meet with Commander Erwin!” you shouted as you use your gear so you could slice the Titan's nape. “What the fuck are y'all looking at?! Go before the remaining horses get killed!” four of your subordinates looked at you with tears in their eyes, “We can't leave you here, Captain!” you cussed underneath your breath and swung towards an abnormal titan aimimg for the horses.
“We'll all die if you won't follow my orders. This is not a request, it is an order from your Captain, leave! Now!” You growled as you viciously charged yourself towards the Titan to kill it.
When it fell on the ground, lifeless, you immediately looked behind and a small smile made its way across your lips upon seeing your subordinates ride the remaining horses to save themselves.
You tore your eyes away from them and looked at five Titans charging themselves towards you, you only have one blade left and to say that you're exhausted is understatement, you knew that this is the day where you'll die and you'll embrace your death proudly and wholeheartedly.
Dying to save your young comrades would be the most glorious part of your career as a captain, your young comrades has so much to learn, they still have a lot to know but you've already done your part if you will die in here today your only regrets would be the fact that you can't see Levi in your last breath.
But you heard from your father who's a doctor that once a person dies, they will have flashbacks of their whole life, looking at the brighter side you'd probably see Levi on those flashbacks before you die.
“Let's finish this motherfuckers.”
°°°°°
Levi was obviously anxious as he kept on looking behind him, your squad should be here by this time, you should be tailing them now already but he still can't see you not even a sign of any of your squads.
“Levi, we should go faster.”
“She's still out there, if you want to you can go but I'll wait for her...” he whispered in his shaky voice, before it was so damn easy for him to go on because he had accepted the fact that not everyone could go back alive and he has mastered of masking his grief whenever another comrade has fallen.
But if he's gonna lose you the way he lost his comrades, he would lose his sanity, he would probably go mad once that happens.
“Squads of Captain YN approaching!”
Hope bloomed in Levi's heart as he heard the announcement of your squad's arrival but when he looked back there are only two horses with four people and you're not one of them.
He felt like his heart stopped beating when he tried looking back further but still no sign of you, he decided to shout at your subordinates. “Where is your captain?” he asked in a firm tone and none of them answered.
The teens just looked down and one by one, they broke down into tears. “We're very sorry Captain Levi.” Erwin overheard the conversation and he felt himself go numb. He doesn't want to believe it, he's not losing one of his greatest Captain, not today...
“Can you please stop fucking crying and answer me! Where the fuck is my girl?!”
“She ordered us to leave her, she faced the Titans alone, we're sorry...”
Levi immediately pulled the reins backward, halting the horse from running. “I'm going back for her.” Erwin also halted and looked at Levi as he shook his head.
“By the walls, Levi! We can't afford to lose two of our greatest Captains today. We have to move forward.”
“I'm sorry Erwin. She's the only one that I've got, losing her means I'm nothing.”
“Levi!” Erwin called out but Levi still chose to go back to the forest where you should have been.
As he get closer to the forest his heart beats faster and faster at every moment, his determination of finding you kept him going, he would never leave you, not when you're the only one that he has.
On his way towards the heart of the forest he encountered three Titans and he chose to let out his frustration in killing those three viciously.
When he arrived at the heart of the forest, he immediately looked around, there were no bloods but there's still some remaining of the titans that hasn't evaporated yet.
Which only means one thing;
You're alive.
“Brat!” he exclaimed as he saw your figure laying down on a big branch of tree while you hold your weapons close to you, eyes half closed as you breathe heavily.
You could hear his shouts, he's telling you not to go to sleep but as much as you want to do it your eyelids felt heavy, you can feel him gently slapping your cheeks in attempting of waking you but it obviously doesn't work.
“You can't close your eyes, no. Please baby, don't. We made a promise didn't we? You need to stay with me, you promised to stay with me.”
Levi kept you close in his chest as he rides his horse, he silently prayed that there would be no more titans to appear because dealing with them wouldn't be his priority, he has to make sure you'll get back safe, your head was wounded and he's not sure of how serious the injury was so he did what he could and used his shirt as a bandage to stop the bleeding.
“Lev..”
“Just hang in there, don't sleep. I'll tell you stories so don't close your eyes and hold onto me tightly huh? Can you do that for me baby?” he begged tears streaming down his cheeks, the way you called out his name sounded so weak and every time that he'll look at you, he could see your eyes closed and fear filled his heart, something he has never felt years before meeting you.
After his friends died, he made himself tough, promised not to get attached again so he wouldn't have to lose his mind over and over again whenever he lose a comrade but you came along, he wanted to blame Erwin and Hanji for introducing you to him but he actually would thank them, because he never felt this way before.
The way you made him feel at ease, every time you'll hug him he feels contented and peaceful and whenever he feels your lips on his it is his paradise and his days without you in his side is hell.
So he couldn't afford to lose you now, not today not forever.
“I—I love you, Levi. Take care of yourself for me hmm? I'm sorry if I—”
“I'm not listening so whatever you want to say, say it to me when we get back inside the walls.”
Of course, he can hear you clearly but he's not strong enough to hear you say those words he doesn't want to hear you saying that you love him as if you're saying goodbye and that's not what he wants.
“Lev, I'm tired.”
“Baby just hold on, don't leave me please. I'm begging you.”
As he bursted into tears, his mind was filled with memories of you and him together.
Flashback
“Once we eliminated all of the titans, I would open a book shop and I will read for the rest of my life.”
“Where am I in your plans, brat?” he asked his arms wrapped around you as you rested your head in his hard chest. “You would be spending your days sitting beside me while I read.” you playfully said, pressing your lips in his jaw.
Levi looked down at you with a smirk, “That's not so bad but we should open a teashop with a bookshop inside it so people can read and drink tea.” you chuckled. His love for tea is really strong and to be honest there are four of you in this relationship.
Tea, Books, you and Levi.
Well at least there's no other girls, there's just tea and his cleaning obsession, “We'll do that and I'll tell Armin, Eren, Mikasa, Jean, Connie and Sasha to stay with us. I will be making apple pies and they would love it.” you've grown fond of the teens from the 104th, probably because you've seen how they've grown, how the playful teenagers became brave soldiers ready to fight for the humanity.
And you really want this nightmare to end so those kids would have the normal life, “I didn't know we're also planning to open an orphanage now.” he said, sarcasm perfectly implied.
“Quit talking as if you don't like them.”
“If you want children we can make a lot.” he playfully dipped his head down to press his lips on yours and you hold onto his hair as you returned his kisses, when he pulled away, his grey eyes were sparkling as a small smile made its way across his lips.
“God, I’ve never met someone like you.”
“Because everyone in this world is different and there isn’t another face like mine? Duh?”
Levi stared at you, left dumbfounded of how you sassily replied to his heartwarming statement, “You're picking up my attitude, it's alarming.” he sighed pinching your nose as you slapped his hand away.
“Your fault not mine.” You glared with a pout.
End of Flashback
“You can't sleep because our brats are waiting, Mikasa, Armin, Eren, Jean, Sasha and Connie is waiting for us to be back. We'll still eliminate the titans right? We have so much plans baby, don't leave me please.”
“I'm sorry Levi.”
“Captain...” Levi lazily looked back at him just to see Armin standing awkwardly as he rubbed his nape, “You should eat and go get some sleep.” Armin told him politely, the blond teen doesn't want to make the Captain mad especially he knows what Levi is going through.
“No. Leave my office now.”
“Captain, we know that it's not easy but you can't sacrifice your health.” Eren appeared bebind Armin and soon after, Mikasa, Sasha, Connie and Jean appeared, each one of them carrying different kind of food but Sasha is holding a container of water because the others forbid him in bringing the food, knowing that she might get tempted to eat it.
“Leave me alone and let me work in my office quietly loud brats. None of you knows what I feel.”
“We do. You're not the only one who's sad, we missed Captain YN too but this is beyond our control. The least we can do is to take care of you because we know that she wouldn't want you to be like this.” Mikasa said, her voice devoid of any emotions as she walked towards the Captain as she placed down a tray of food on top of his table.
“We believe that you're old enough to eat by yourself and we wouldn't have to shove that spoon on your mouth just so you could eat.” Mikasa looked at the Captain blankly and when Levi looked up at her, he narrowed his eyes.
“It's really scary how you sounded like me some times, fine, I'll eat so you brats would shut up.”
The teens' faces lit up as they watch Levi eat, he still doesn't look like his usual self because of what happened but they're all not fine but they also knew that they will be.
“Levi! Captain YN is awake.” Hanji said in between hear breaths, Levi didn't respond and left his unfinished food while the teens followed him, running so they could match his pace.
Levi opened the door of the room and he saw you sitting on the bed, the bandage was still on your head, there was a clueless look on your face when your gaze landed at him and Levi immediately ran to hug you tightly.
You let out a sound of surprise and Levi pulled away thinking that he hurt you. “I'm sorry. Did I hurt you? How are you feeling? Do you remember what happened to us? Do you want some water?” you smiled and shook your head, your gaze landed at the flower vase beside your table and Levi saw how your eyes sparkled when you saw the white Carnation.
“I recognize this flower...” you whispered in a soft voice, you reached out for the flower vase before glancing at the man next to you.
“But I don't know you. Who are you?”
The moment you said that, the teens arrived and they heard everything you said. You heard their gasps and you innocently looked up at them, “Hello kiddos, the nurse told me that I've been out for two weeks. I think I missed something, this man suddenly came in here to hug me.” Armin felt cold sweats on his forehead, he doesn't have any idea how to handle this situation especially they saw how heartbroken Levi is.
“Captain, he's your—” before Jean could even finish his sentence, Levi already cut him off, “Leave, brats. Let me talk to her alone.” you frowned at him before glancing at the kids, “Sir, you're not even suppose to be here. Why are you asking them to leave? I know them.” Eren didn't have to hear Levi's reply to you, he just dragged his friends away from that room, scared of what would happen next.
The room was filled with deafening silence after the teens left, Levi was looking down as his breathing got heavier at every minute that passes by while you were still sat on the bed still looking at him cluelessly.
“You don't have to remember me, just let me take care of you, this is better than losing you completely.” he whispered as he took the flower vase from you, placing it back to where it was. “Do you remember anything aside from the kids? Like how you got injured?” he spoke in a calmest way he could even if he's damn broken inside, the first thing he had imagine once you wake up is you hugging him, telling him that you're not leaving him just like what you've promised but here he is sitting on a chair beside your bed while you don't remember him.
When he didn't get any response from you he decided to stand up as his grey eyes got dulled again, it lost the sparks it has earlier.
“You're probably uncomfortable of having a stranger here. I'll go get the nurse.” he turned his back on you to leave but he heard your voice.
“Levi Ackerman, you'll just leave your girlfriend like this then?”
It only took him three seconds to return to where he was, his arms immediately wrapped around yours as he sobbed on the crook of your neck. “I was at the end of my wits, the whole world can forget about me but not you. Don't pull that shit again.” he scolded, you wanted to chuckle or laugh but you couldn't because you heard his sobs, he's like a child as he hug you tightly as if scared that you'll suddenly disappear.
You slowly pushed him away and wiped away his tears as you comb his hair, brushing off some strands of his hair that's hiding his eyes from you. “Sorry, it was a joke and it's obviously not funny.” Levi sighed as he closed his eyes before a low chuckle escaped from his lips, “I can't believe you even picked up my terrible sense of humour.” he whispered weakly as he pulled you close for another hug. For two hellish weeks he drowned himself in paperworks and in between those times he'll be looking after you while you sleep and it drained him a lot.
“You lost weight.” you stated. You memorized every inch of Levi's body and 2 weeks of being unconscious wouldn't change that fact, you knew that he lost weight, those dark circles around his eyes also suggests the fact that he didn't have lots of sleep.
“You scared me.”
“Where was the guy who told me once that he has nothing to be afraid of 'cause he got nothing to lose?” you brows raised and Levi rolled his eyes before leaning in to kiss you quickly.
“Brat, I have nothing to lose.” He touched your head, his grey eyes looking down on yours as a genuine smile made its way across his lips. “Or at least once had nothing to lose.” he whispered before cupping your face for another kiss, much longer than the first ones, it was also slower as if he's still trying to make sure that everything is real, he's still trying to make sure that his worst nighmare wouldn't happen.
His nightmare where he lost you.
Asorted ADA x Reader | The "happy" friend
BSD misc. Reader insert
Warnings- mentions of suicidal thoughts. Mentions of Verbal and mild physical abuse.
The happy co-worker, happy friend, happy ex, happy girlfriend. No matter what you pushed it on to yourself. So many of your peers had it worse. Look at Dazai, he manages to smile and joke despite his pain. You thought you could do it too. So, that’s what you did. Since you joined the agency. You never let them see you break down. They never got to see you cry. They never got to see you under anything but happy. Even if you were annoyed, you held onto your smile. There were so many orphans among your mighty crew of detectives. The ones you were the closest to, you confirmed them to be orphans from a young age. Dazai, parentless at 14. He may have been an orphan for even longer than that. You just know he didn’t have any at 14. Then there was Atsushi, who had lived his whole childhood abused in an orphanage. Kyoka, she lost her parents to her ability. The others you were not too sure about, but the sneaking suspicion this organization was full of gifted orphans, was high.
Then there was you. A girl, no older than Dazai. Not the best looking, at least that’s what you told yourself. The others had no idea about your insecurities regarding your body. Maybe you were too tall, too short, too thin, too fat. Some days were better than others. Some days the situation flipped. There was always something you could nit-pick about yourself. Your mind wandered constantly back to the words of your parents. “Not skinny enough, too skinny. Not fit enough, but don’t be too fit. Men don’t like to be threatened.” you had parents. Maybe they weren't the best but you had parents. They were a bit abusive with words but never had they placed a finger on you. Well, there were a few times but it was normal right? For a parent to lose their cool and lash out once or twice, maybe even a handful of times over the years. They judged you for your choice of occupation and the people you hung around. They called you out on outfits and the way you acted. That’s why you were here now. Far from them, but their words still haunted you. In truth, you feared them but wanted their approval.
Today, you stood with your coworkers finishing up the latest job. You hummed in your outfit. It covered your arms, which you already bandaged but wanted to keep that a secret. The things you did to keep this false joy were extreme. The things you took in impacted your state. Listening to Atsushi, holding Kyoka when she broke down. Hell, you were even there to scold Dazai and occasionally listen to his drunk words. The tales of how much he had suffered broke you. Even Kunikida learned to confide in you. He would tell you about his stress, and the pain he felt about past mistakes that resulted in his ideals being missed or broken. There was nobody in the agency who didn’t trust you with their problems. To them, you had none. They were okay with talking to you. They felt better after talking to you. That’s how it worked.
Biting the inside of your cheek, your feet moved to Kunikida. You knew he’d want to talk about this one. He hated seeing people killed before his eyes. He’d already nearly beaten Dazai for letting the boy die. Atsushi was off in the corner, fidgeting around with the tight atmosphere. You had arrived a little too late to prevent the death of the kidnapped child. Things like this happened, mistakes were bound to happen but… they had larger effects on some than they did on others. Dazai was facing the wall, his hands in fists. His head against the wall. You could tell he was blaming himself. Atsushi just felt awkward being here. “Kunikida?” you whispered trying to keep a joyful yet soft tone to your voice. Your hand reached out to tap his shoulder only for him to slap it away with a heavy glare.
“How can you smile like that? Somebody died in front of us and all you do is smile! You're always smiling no matter what happens! Do you even understand what’s going on right now? We failed (Y/n). Do you need somebody to explain to you what you should be doing right now?” his voice kept raising pitch by pitch. It sent flashes along your eyes. The way your father's voice would start soft and gradually get louder by the second, until he slammed a fist against the wall and screamed at you. Those yells always ended in the verbal assault. The comments on your form, the comments on your social life, and the useless degrees and jobs you had.
The wince you suppressed went unnoticed. The shaking of your hands is easily hidden behind you. Hands clasped together as your eyes trailed Kunikida. His body stood towering over you. Heavily glaring as he turned away. “I just wanted to make sure you were alright.” you tilted your head to play this off with a smile.
It was no help to your situation. He pushed past you, heading for the building exit he froze in the doorway. “We have to go tell a parent we failed to save a child's life. Do you understand how hard that is for a parent? How could I be alright? How can any of us be alright?” he was one step from overfilling your glass. The cracks forming were starting to show. Your eyes unable to meet his eyes. “You can be heartless and an idiot at times. Smiling in the presence of death.” there it was, the same words you had gotten at your grandmother's funeral. You’d tried to stay strong for your mother. You only knew how to smile. You knew no other way of staying strong. Hearing it from a friend sent you into overdrive.
“Shut up.” you hissed through clenched teeth.
This time Atsushi seemed to join in. shocked by your sudden negativity. He had never seen you like this. None of them had ever seen you drop a smile. “Are you mad?” Atsushi asked before you shook it off and smiled.
“Huh? Of course not! I'm just as normal as ever! I don’t know what you mean? Did I seem mad? Sorry, guess I just let that slip. I meant to say you shouldn’t assume I'm heartless, just cause I'm still… happy! I feel the pain you guys feel over this! I just think we should move over this!” giving a closed smile, Kunikida's raised voice washed over the room again.
“Move past?! We could have saved them if we had been a bit faster in getting here! The kid wasn’t supposed to die! Stop smiling and grasp the situation! Stop being insensitive to your acting just like Dazai does sometimes!” Were you that bad? Was it really that bad to just want to stay happy? “You have everything perfect, you can’t even grasp the situation!” you couldn’t do this anymore. His words were starting to turn from accusations to frustration. He was taking his pain out on you. Instead of doing it in the kind form he normally used, he was using anger to express how hurt he was right now.
Unable to take any more of the words he spat, you dropped it all. His words were getting on the triggering side. The words he spat slowly started to inch closer and closer to your parents' words. Words that made you have to act like this. “I can’t do this anymore,” you whispered trying to keep your tears locked inside. It was useless though. The container shattered as his words brushed by your ears. Faded and fuzzy, the world drifted away. You were pulled back into the world by a brunette. His slender hands shaking your shoulders. You shoved him away glaring.
“Woah, she’s pissed,” Atsushi whispered before you shook your head looking at the ceiling, you smiled.
“No Atsushi, I'm sad, for lack of a better word. I want to walk up the stairs of a very tall building and dive into nothingness. I want to lay down with a bottle of whiskey and drink myself into sweet relief. I want to look in the mirror and like the way I look. I want to walk to my parents with the courage to tell them I'm perfect no matter what I look like. I want to tell them that what I do for a living makes me strong. I want to have the strength to shout and tell them I don't need a man to dictate my life. I want to scream at them that the only man I want is a man who isn’t afraid of a fierce, strong, and independent woman.” the words fell from your lips as your tears fell. They fell through your smile. The happy look stuck to your face.
“(y/n)...” Kunikida started before you chuckled, closing his sentence off.
“Aren't I just perfect? I hate my body, I hate my personality. I hate everything about myself. I hate my gift, nobody would like the real me. Nobody knows the real me. Hell, I don't even know the real me. I am nothing without my smile. But… it's okay as long as I can keep smiling! I can just fake it until it's real. I fooled all of you, didn’t I? I really seemed happy! Even I was starting to think I was! But then, I get home, look in the mirror, and all I can see is a useless shell.” your voice stopped before you were wrapped in bandaged arms. Those arms ran over your back to pull at your arms. Concerned hazel brushing skilled tender fingers under the cloth of your sleeves. Those fingers dancing over the white cloth. His hair falling over his now darkened eyes.
“You too…” he whispered just as you yanked away your arms and held them, still keeping a smile.
Of course, he had to lift your spirits just a bit. So, as you looked away unable to meet his gaze, he got to one knee and pulled your hand to him with a smirk. Kunikida facepalmed realizing the words the brunette would spout next. “Dazai, this was a crime scene. Are you seriously going to… I'm going to kill you!” he shouted stomping over to you two.
Dazai’s eyes met yours as he put his playful smile on. “Would you commit a double suicide with me~?” he hummed before being shoved into a wall. “Kunikidaaaaa! Why would you do something so cruel?!” he dramatically put a hand over his chest and his other hand on his forehead. Kunikida clicked his tongue, turning to you. His eyes reflected only guilt, as if your outburst had been all his fault. Even if you had been dying to talk to somebody about the crumbling emotions for months.
“I’ll think about it, Dazai-san!” you playfully responded to his request. For a moment you truly did feel a flutter of joy.
“I swear if you start doing his habits, I will add to your paperwork!” the worst kind of threat. A threat that made both you and Dazai cringe but chuckle.
“We should get going.” you hummed looking up to the ceiling again. “We do have a family to comfort.” Everybody fell serious and nodded.
Regrets and Realizations
So I need to do work but I have to let this out my system so I can focus (ehem let's see). It's been on my mind for a whole week already! I, uhm, am not really a writer but Vincenzo forced me to be one. Read at your own risk 🤣
Takes places after episode 16 after threatening Jang Han Seok and Choi Myung Hee. Vincenzo coming face to face with regrets of losing his mom and realizing how he doesn't want to lose Cha Young.
Read in ao3
----------
"Regret is the most painful thing in life."
These words echo in Vincenzo's head as he was driving back to the hospital after his encounter with the Babel quartet. He says it so often to people as advice yet with himself, he doesn't know how it applies. Maybe because the life he led in Italy allows him not to have regrets.
Anger. That's all he felt for his mother before he learned the truth. The truth that she left him in the orphanage not because she didn't love him, but because she had cancer. She was afraid to leave his son dying so she chose to send him away.
I'm sorry I couldn't keep my promise that I'd come for you soon.
He learned that she looked for him for several years and that after everything that has happened, she still loves him.
There hasn't been a single day that I haven't thought about you.
And now all he felt was regret. Yes he killed the man who killed his mother in front of Jang Han Seok and Choi Myung Hee, but it is not enough. They have crossed Vincenzo and there's no other way for them but down.
He recalled the days when he visits his mom and during those days, Cha Young was with him. Hong Cha Young. She is the reason why he chose to forgive his mother. Because of her, he got to spend a few intimate hours with her - taking selca together, buying her bunggeopang, buying her a bag, taking a stroll with her. If it weren't this strong-willed lawyer who was always by his side, he wouldn't get to spend those precious moments with her. She has slowly become his rock, his foundation, his reason to fight. She supported him even when she knew his deeds.
This made him think of what could have Cha Young felt when her father was intentionally killed by Wusang and Babel. He wasn't even there for her when it happened. He even told her that she should have been a good daughter sooner. It must have been hard for her then. He gripped the steering wheel while he thought of Cha Young in his shoes months ago. If there's anyone who can understand him now, it's Cha Young. And if there's someone who can understand Cha Young, it's him. Funny how their circumstances parallel each other.
-----------
Vincenzo arrives at the hospital with blood on his hands and neck. His white shirt stained with the blood of his mother's murderer. As he went out of his car to get inside the hospital, he took his phone from his coat and called Cha Young. She picked up at the first ring.
"Where are you? Are you okay?" Her voice is filled with worry, fear, and relief. Fear that something might have happened to him without her saying how much he means to her and relief that he finally called, that somehow he's not in danger.
"Byeonhosa-nim." Vincenzo said with the hint of tiredness and loneliness. His tone was cold and void of emotion.
"Yes. Where are you? Did you make him pay? I convinced the staff to wait a little while before proceeding with cremation. Mr. Nam and I will take care of the papers, don't worry. Where are you?" Cha Young said in a single breath. She shuffled outside the morgue to see if Vincenzo has arrived at the hospital.
"Byeonhosa-nim. I have something to tell you."
"What is it?"
"I'm sorry."
"For what? What's wrong? Where are you right now?" He can sense the worry in her voice. He knows she's acting strong but inside she's crumbling for Oh Gyeong Ja's unfair death. Vincenzo now taking the stairs to where Cha Young is. It's good that there were few people in that part of the building at that time. He would have caused a commotion with how he looks right now.
"Make sure you catch him. No, make him pay." Cha Young's words assured him that she trusts him, that she will stay with him no matter how many crimes he commit. Her words were the catalyst for him to make pay whoever did that to his mom. Then he remembered his thoughts during the car ride. He wasn't there for her. But Cha Young chose to be the bigger person and reminded him that regret is the most painful thing in life.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you when Mr. Hong passed away. I even amplified that you were not a good daughter to your dad. And yet here you are with me. I really don't deserve you." His tone became soft as he apologize to Cha Young.
"Yah. This is not the time to be saying such things," she said gritting her teeth. "Byeonhosa-nim, please, I just need to know where you are right now and that you are safe," her voice cracking.
The last time he heard her almost crying was when the victim's family was unrightfully murdered. How he wants to hug then, to comfort her, yet he chose not to. He was afraid to overstep the boundaries. But right now, all he wants to do is hug her and not let her go.
Vincenzo spots Cha Young half crying outside the morgue, speaking to him on the phone. He should be the one emotional right now, but Cha Young looked like she was the one who lost a mother. With light steps he walked towards her. She was too preoccupied with their conversation that she didn't notice Vincenzo was already behind her.
"Vincenzo Cassano, where-" Vincenzo ended the call and placed his phone inside his coat.
"Yah!" Cha Young half cried half shouted on the phone. Tears were already welling in her eyes. Then without a word, he swiftly went and hugged her from behind, engulfing her in his embrace. His bloodied hand on her waist; his face buried in her neck. He took the phone from her right hand, tucked it inside her the pocket of her pants and then gently moved his hand back to her waist.
"Byeonhosa-nim. What are you doing?" She wants to turn around but Vincenzo's arms is tight around her.
"Back to byeonhosa-nim again? I'm sorry. This must have been how you felt before. I feel terrible."
"Yah. Don't make me cry anymore. Listen, it's not your fault. Please don't blame yourself. Let's not talk about that. Are you hurt somewhere?" Then Vincenzo loosen his arms from her and Cha Young was able to free herself from Vincenzo. She turned around to look at him. Gone is the cold gaze before he left earlier. With shaking hands he searched his arms, his torso and his chest to see if he has any injury. Aside from a few bruises on his fingers, thankfully he's not hurt anywhere else. Finally she settled her right hand on his face with an attempt to wipe away the blood stains.
Vincenzo was looking at her intently the entire time she was searching his body for any injury. This is the closest physically they have been after their charade as a couple. His left hand went to caress that Cha Young's hand and leaned his head. Her hands are warm on his cold cheeks. He closed his eyes and he spoke, "I'm fine."
"I was so worried. Why would you end the call without saying something?" She removed her hands from his cheeks to hit him in the shoulders just as she did before when she's irritated or excited. But he was quicker and took her hand back to his cheeks.
"I'm sorry. I'm here now."
"Will you please stop saying sorry?" Now they are looking at each other's eyes. The tension between them building up.
"Thank you for staying with my mom."
"I'm returning the favor. You stayed with my dad when I was busy fighting against him. Let's go in." She said changing the topic and dragging Vincenzo by the hand enter the morgue and say his final goodbye to his mom.
"Byeonhosa-nim," he said keeping her from walking, "today I have declared war with Babel. We still have a long war to fight and I don't want to lose you in the process. After mom's funeral, we have to arrange things so I can keep an eye on you. Either I stay in your house or you stay in my apartment." There was a pause and sigh before he uttered, "I can't lose you, too."
"Why?" she asked not looking at him. I can't lose you too. His words echo in her head. Something in her anticipate that he will confess his feelings for her. He's been very subtle about his words and actions towards her but this hug means something else. She wants him to acknowledge his feelings and accept that he deserves love.
"Just agree please and don't ask anymore questions." Because I love you, Hong Cha Young, in his mind he said. But these are the words she was not expecting. Maybe he needs more time. He just lost his mom. I need to stay with him. She sighed and said, "Okay. We'll stay at my house."
---------
So I finished it at last! It's my first fic in long time (oh the power that Vincenzo has). I figured Vinnie will save the confession a little later because what will we viewers look forward to? I hope you enjoyed this short fic!
Edit: I refined it a bit? LOL I might be writing the continuation of this. Chayenzo in Cha Young's house.
Here is Part 2!
Encounter (Gelato and Sorbet X Reader)
Genre: Platonic, found family, fluff, wholesome
Warning: Harassment, stalking
You didn't found this coming, associating yourself with the Mafia in a way that one wouldn't thought of and can only fantasize about— if being practically adopted by a pair of couple from most heinous, most successful mafiosi syndicate Passione's hitmen team is someone's fantasy. It just happen to be that you found yourself in a bad situation, one thing lead to another and then all of the sudden you were like a child to Gelato and Sorbet without calling them your parents. And to be frank, so did the entirety of La Squadra, as they thought the couple were content with each others company but nope— they decided to pick up a random kid from the street... At least that's what they knew based in the info the couple has given them. To you, it was an entirely and distinctively different narrative. It all started after spending an over time in school tending to the Mount Everest tall school requirements, picking up numerous books and shoving all of it in your bag. If ever you were pushed in a river, you swore that the bag will simply weigh you down in it. It was in the middle of the evening, idly walking back to your home passing through crowds of strangers. Your home was quite the distant, but you decided to persevere and walk home, as you had to spare money for an extremely expensive fare at this time of the night. Naples' streets were still busy despite the time, but you couldn't blame them. All the sights and sounds visible during the night can be quite pretty and desirable than the day. And so there you were, minding your own business, walking... Walking... Walking... And musing about the possible dangers of the night may bring I mean come on— this is Naples for crying out loud. It was sadly the norm, but you were used to it. All you can do was to look down, and prayed that it wouldn't be your day to encounter these type of people. But of course, the universe operates in a way in which it will take any opportunity to fuck one up, one way or another. You take your usual route home, idly swaying along to tunes you've made and mumbled to yourself when you noticed a particular person who has been walking behind you ever since you've set foot outside of the school gates. At first you shrug, knowing you weren't the only one taking this route and so you ignored the stranger completely clad in dark colours, with no chance of identification. This was your first mistake. Finally, you noticed how much he took the same turns as you did, watching you intently through their dark tinted glasses. And so, you picked up the pace of your strides and so did he. Panic arose in your stomach, but you made no move to implicate your extreme anxiety pulsating through your nerves. It felt like drinking five cans of energy drink in the middle of the night in a span of two minutes after being dared by friends (oddly specific, I know.), except you were actually fearing for your life. You looked around you for a possible place of escape, gaze darting from structure to structure until it landed on people. It was a good idea to hide or perhaps blend yourself with groups of people and yet somehow, your first instinct upon laying eyes on people was latching yourself on the first civilian you can latch on. This, being the couple who had decided to take a breather from the suffocating environment of La Squadra headquarters. Sorbet was confused the moment someone clung to his arm, tight and showed no signs of letting go. He was pissed, but got a glimpse of your shaking hands and the fear in your eyes. Whilst Sorbet was busily analysing your intent, a wrathful blond was ready to shed some blood. Gelato was more than prepared and had no problem to discretely retrieve his revolver from his back pocket, pull the hammer and trigger, empty the whole damn barrel in your brain when you had the most brightest idea to cling on Sorbet's arm whilst they were having a peaceful walk. He was more than pissed at the fact that Sorbet hadn't shoved the bitch away the moment they clung to him. "Please help me..." Your voice low, small and desperately pleading
for help. This was then further solidified at your shaky hands clinging tightly onto Sorbet's arm. "A man... He's following me, sir... Please... He's walking behind us... Wearing all black. I don't know what to do, please help me." Well then, it turns out Gelato was plotting to empty the barrel of the gun on the wrong person! Well at first he was righteously indignant by your audacity to cling onto his husband so suddenly, and rage has further blinded him that he didn't notice the fact you were wearing a school uniform, smaller than they were. "Oi kid, your padre and I were worried about you! Why are you still out this late, hmmm?" Sorbet acts naturally, assuming into the position of a stern and protective father far too perfectly. Knowing his husband truly well, Gelato knew what to do and decided to play along. He lets go of Sorbet's hand, before going around to grab yours so they had you between them. "What were you doing in school anyways? Is it your damn teachers again?" For a moment you were taken aback, before realization dawned on you and cleared your throat to answer, "Well I was just finishing up some works school. I thought you wanted me to improve in school?" "It's flipping eight in the middle of the night! What if some sicko snatched you up?" Sorbet scolds, momentarily looking behind his shoulders before noticing the figure dressed in black still following. "We will discuss this back at home. Let's just get dinner for now." Gelato chimes in, as the three of you stopped in front of a restaurant. The couple had just gotten out to eat, but fuck it. Sorbet sighs, "Fine. Next time you won't do that again, alright? Your padre and I were just worried is all." "I'm sorry, Papá, it won't happen again." You entered the restaurant and reserved yourself a booth. You were more than relieved upon entering the restaurant and seeing the man following you scurry back. Letting out a sigh of relief, you look across the booth to give the couple your words of gratitude. "Thank you so much, I didn't knew what to do! I'm so sorry for disturbing you!" You profusely pouted out, picking your bag up from the foot of your seat, preparing to leave when the blond assassin gently got a hold of your wrist prompting you to stop. "Kid, it's late. I think it's best if we wait this out for a little bit, okay?" Gelato said, whilst Sorbet nodded beside him. "What's your name?" "It's Y/N... Signore." "My name is Gelato, this is my husband Sorbet." "It's great meeting you, Y/N. Would you care for some refreshments? Our treat." After getting to know each other, how they now knew you were an orphan residing in the local orphanage, they took the time and care to make sure you arrive home safe and sound. The couple had the mutual revelation and agreement they wanted a child of their own. The way you referred to Sorbet as Papá somehow awaken the remaining fondness he has for another human being other than his husband, Gelato. Time exploded like a bullet from a gun and after school you found yourself spotting the couple, waving hi to them and stopping for a quick chat before going your separate ways. To you, your encounters with them were purely coincidental, you only get to interact with them within occasions you can see them. The couple, on the other hand... They were settling some paperwork in the orphanage from where you resided your whole life. "And now I'm here, I guess." You shrugged, as Formaggio and Pesci seemed to have been frozen in time, taking the time to comprehend how distinctively different your telling was from their colleagues. "Now you know." "Heh, I knew it." Illuso proudly proclaims, crossing his arms to.his chest with a lopsided grin. "Y/N, it's late. Go to bed. Your fathers are going to kill us if they found out you're staying up late." Prosciutto says as he passes the couch you were seated on. "What? But it's the weekend tomorrow! There's no school tomorrow!" You whined, watching as Prosciutto disappear from the hallways. "Huh, I always knew the two weren't painting the whole picture." Melone
mutters out loud. "Painting the whole picture? What's that supposed to mean!?" Ghiaccio suddenly chimes in. "Y/N, it's pass your bed time. Please go to your room." You jumped upon the sudden intrusion of a new person speaks up behind you. Looking back from your shoulders, you see the Capo's lingering and towering figure over you. "Y-yes sir. Off I go to bed." You stepped away from the couch. "Goodnight everyone." A chorus of goodnight responded, before you entered your designated room. The whole La Squadra may not have seen this coming, nor do they thought it was practical but seeing the couple happy with this decision of theirs, then they'd brush it all aside. They're just happy that they're happy.
ATTWN: A Look at Miss Brent
I keep circling around the idea of writing And Then There Were None meta, like a full, proper analysis of the novel, but I just can't settle down on how to do it, cause I do have many thoughts, but I can't seem to organise them in a way it will make sense. But-
I was thinking about Miss Brent today, and she's not exactly a character I have that many thoughts compared to Vera or Armstrong, but she certainly has my interest. What strikes me stronger about her is her complacency, in a way.
Let's look at the novel first: here's this sixty-something woman, a spinster who takes on girls from local charities/orphanages to train them into proper maids or whatever. It's not an unusual thing for that time based on the rest of Christie's novels, it seemed like a common occurrence for the period. At any rate, she's very righteous, uptight, her belief is almost borderline fanatical, she never hesitates over her "innocence" in front of the accusations, and the thing is: she doesn't deny shunning the girl away.
Unlike the others, who remain resilient on their innocence (Lombard the exception cause he literally confessed right away), Miss Brent never denies that she did refuse to help Beatrice. In her own mind, she didn't do anything wrong - and if we're going there, in its fucked up way, she technically didn't do anything wrong. She had no familial attachment to the girl, she didn't have to do anything for her legally speaking; morally, of course, she should have but we don't arrest people for being morally corrupt lmao Let alone death sentence them. *coughs*
But what gets me it's her complacency. You know, I'm blaming this on the windy day, but thinking about her, sitting by herself almost all the time (including when she died), she never does anything. Unlike the others, Vera included considering how Christie often writes the women isolated, Miss Brent never gets involved in either investigating or helping them to find a way out; she just sits and knits and eventually bosses Vera around or say some mean stuff to someone. She doesn't act, which is odd for us as a reader; I mean, if I was in her spot I would have already made a signal for help, even with the bad weather lmao This book heavily traumatised me anyway--
Miss Brent doesn't act, that's my main point. In her head, I suppose she expects some sort of divine intervention, in its way; not a miracle, but you know, she expected her righteousness guaranteed her safety. She sees the other deaths as punishment, she thinks them all guilty, perhaps not the General or Wargrave, but I've no doubt she considers the rest of them wicked and deserving of the punishment, but never herself. She didn't do anything wrong, she has got nothing to feel sorry for. There is a whole section, where Vera asks Miss Brent if she is not afraid or if she simply doesn't mind dying. To which she reacts exactly like I said before, like she was above them all, like death wouldn't come for her.
Now, I will just vaguely go over the show because I think their choice of handling her was an interesting one. I like most of the choices made by show, except the ending which I'll save for another day of ranting, but Miss Brent in the show behaves similarly, but her background gets deeper. For one there was two key things - I say two because I've seen two different interpretations of this - and they were 1) repressed lesbian and 2) predator. Now, these two could coexist with each other, she could have been taking in girls to take advantage of them, but I don't know, I think it would be hard for her to do that always, so I like to think if repressed lesbian was it, then it makes more sense for her crime and her reaction. It would be related to a feeling of betrayal - "I've given you a home, a job, affection and you still went behind my back to be a whore" - and it's something Miss Brent would probably not acknowledge. She was always too religious, too righteous, so Beatrice probably haunted her more in death than she did in life: no one would believe this ragged girl over any accusations - even if there was consent on her part. But that's just beside the point.
What I mean for the show is, they go in a different direction. Miss Brent's reactions over the murders are a little more in line with her religious dynamic for the show: when Tony dies, she makes a little prayer, she worries about Mrs. Rogers state when she sees her passed out (despite the fact she humiliated her earlier over being meek and weak and so on), she has a judgemental attitude towards Vera, but even that comes from a place of almost understanding? She still judges them harshly, but she is a lot less harsh to the ones she consider less harmful (aka she is absolutely distasteful about Lombard, whose crime is easily the worst crime in the show and she thinks so).
Of course, all of her views and beliefs and behaviours are based on her own lifestyle, so she is a bit blind and biased - when Lombard points out about the missionaries crimes in Africa, after she calls him out; or when she states she couldn't imagine crossing paths with a man like him, despite the fact she knows well enough they're all there because they're guilty - so she is bound to hypocrisy every now and again. But her fanaticism from the book is turned into a proper, religious attitude; she does abide by the Bible, she condemns very little her other companions (I mean, she still judges Vera over her youth and her inertia, she judges Armstrong's lack of calm, she judges Lombard because well, because of his Existence™ lmao) She is, of course, judgmental and vain and arrogant, but this is less cartoony and more realistic. More importantly, because her beliefs are much more ingrained in her life, she is afraid. She is genuinely afraid and that is an important, key change that I genuinely like.
Miss Brent has faith, at first, that they will leave the Island, so she stills acts very coldly at first and of course, she still denies her guilt, she still claims she did the right thing and Beatrice caused her own undoing. But, the show pursues the idea that Miss Brent, upon being reminded of the event, starts to feel guilt: when she is praying she hallucinates Beatrice (hallucionation was a choice they did to convey these feelings, but you could just claim that's a memory in her head); and more importantly, before her death - which happens the day after she hallucinates - her demeanor changes entirely. She goes from trying to stay calm and resolute before the tide, to feeling weary. That's important because unlike Book! Emily, she is fully aware she has committed a sin, and now whether that is her neglect of Beatrice's pleas or her own feelings for her, that's beside the point. The point is this woman realises she is very close to meet her maker and the burden of having sinned wears her down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Miss Brent also adds "It's only wool" when Vera is pouring her coffee (which I had to crop cause Gif size), which is her redirecting her distress to something mundane (in another scene later, Vera mentions how doing the dishes is a mundane task, which she finds soothing. In fact, seeking a sense of normalcy is a recurring theme for the show, but also for the book) and ordinary. Vera, of course, notices her distress over being hunted; she shares the feeling, and I don't want to focus too much on Vera because I'll talk about her eventually later, but this shows how Miss Brent changes drastically.
On their first conversation after the dinner, Vera's impression of Miss Brent is of an uptight, self-righteous, straight-up cruel woman and she avoids her if she can help it, and truth be told, Miss Brent does act very badly and says bad things, Vera is not being touchy about it. So when Vera lays the coffee tray, she is ready to walk away before Miss Brent addresses her (she even makes a dry remark on "There is no milk, I'm afraid", which is meant to spite Miss Brent's earlier attitude over asking for perfect eggs after Mrs Rogers died and so on), and Miss Brent talks so unlike herself, a weariness that makes Vera reconsider and come back, to pour her coffee. She feels sorry for Miss Brent, because she finally cracked like the others; Miss Brent knows now that no amount of faith might defend her from this killer, because this killer has got nothing to do with a justice kill.
She stays seated, knitting again, but when she reaches for the coffee she hesitates. She realises Vera could have poisoned it (before entering the room, since she watches Vera pouring the coffee), and then she puts it down. There is a sense of danger in her, and she has no desire to die, unlike in the book where she so casually just stays behind, unafraid in her own attitude of superiority. I like this change a lot; I think showing her fear before her God enhances her religious mania a lot more, because she truly fears Divine Judgement, because she understands, deep down, that she did a bad thing; maybe not murder - I mean, it wasn't murder after all - but she still did a morally bad thing. If there is a Heaven, it won't be for her.
Child of Blood and Salt - Chapter 3
It would be fair to say that a coughing Inej, a murdersus and bloodied Kaz, and a strange dark haired girl who looked like she’d been through the ringer to be the burglar that would have broken into the Van Eck Mansion. Jesper glazed quickly at his boyfriend beside him to make sure he wasn’t going crazy and that the two deadliest people in Ketterdam and some random pirate chick just hadn’t broken into their house. “Ya,” Anya said passing Kaz while dusting herself off already making herself at home in the mansion, “You definitely missed me.” It was Wylan who spoke next, now giving Anya a curious look. “Saints Kaz! What-” “Sorry to barge in,” Kaz cut off now giving Anya a deadly stare that if Jesper had received would of sent him running to the hills , “but we needed a safe place to hide out.” “From what!” Jesper said, now looking over their bloodied and bruised bodies. “Sandwatch,” Kaz said, giving a look to Anya and leading the group to the main sitting room.” Jeseper and Wylan were left in a state of utter astonishment, and caught up just in time. “You know what, call me crazy, but haven’t we all been here before. I thought I had settled into a life of ease and comfort!” Jesper explained. “Ya,” Kaz said, now making himself comfortable and shooting Anya a pointed look, “I did too. But I’d really love to hear your excuse you promised me” “Who is this?” Jesper mouthed to Inej who shook her head just as easily confused. “Come on!” Anya explained to Kaz, who both now seemed to forget there were three other people in the room in the heat of their argument. “I think we're overdue for a family reunion,” Kaz scoffed. That's when Inej noticed. The dark hair, the same chocolate brown eyes. She would kick herself for not noticing it sooner because now it was so obvious. Even their noses looked the same. They were related. “I’m in a bit of a situation,” Anya starts. “An understatement.” “Kaz, please,” “No, no, because this is what you do An, you show up at unexpected moments and rain down hell wherever you go. And who's there to fix your mistakes? Me. ” Kaz exploded jumping out of his chair. “And what- what happened to you sailing around the world. Aren't you supposed to be pirating around on Sturmhond's boat right now? Whatever happened to that? And what about that house in Nova Zem?” Kaz looked accelerated, Jesper and Inej had never seen him worked up like this before. The room was dead silent as Wylan, Jesper, and Inej silently waited on the edge of their seats to see how the story played out. The housekeeper was now bringing out more kavs and glasses which Jesper accepted happily.
“Kaz” Anya said, now losing her humorous energy, “I’m one of Sturmods most trusted crew members.” She explained looking Kaz in the eyes. “I know.” Kaz didn't let his surprise show but said “and how does this change anything?” Anya opened her mouth to say something but words to tell Kaz all the things that she was hiding could't find her.
“Okay!” Jesper finally exploded, “I’m sorry Kaz, but can someone please explain what in saints name is going on here!” Kaz and Anya were finally broken out of their transe of anger and stared at Jesper as if they just realized they all were there. She sighed. “You're Jesper, the sharpshooter, right?” Anya gestured to him, to which he gave a nod. “So that means you must be...Wylan,” Anya continued, “And of course you’re Inej.” She finally turned to Inej who could now clearly see that resemblance between Kaz and Anya in the better lighting of the Van Eck Mansion. “And you are Kaz’s sister,” Inej said with confidence. Jesper spit out his Kavs with a loud unpleasant sound and Wylan's eyes widened in shock. Anya stood still, not denying the accusation. “Wylan, please tell me I’m dreaming, this is all a dream. There is not a female verson of Kaz Brekker in our living room. ” Jesper said turning to Wylan who rolled his eyes and turned to Kaz, “Kaz, I never knew.” “Yes, well that wasthe point wasn’t it.” Kaz said with an annoyed glance at Anya, who rolled her eyes. “But, you’re Grisha,” Inej said with confused glances between the siblings, “aren't you?” Anya opened her mouth to respond but Kaz got there faster. “She was tested when we were children,” Kaz explained, “Before our parents died. You were to be brought to the Little Place but our parents struck a deal with an orphanage in Nova Zem, a place where Grisha children could live in peace, outside the second army. It's wear she grew up .” Kaz sat down again now knowing he couldn't keep his secret sister from his crows any longer. “We met years ago, and Anya had gotten a position of Sturmhond's crew. We had other meetings throughout the years, it’s where I went those two weeks last year.” It was all making sense to the crows now, but Anya’s head was down listening to Kaz tell her story. “That's where I thought you were,” Kaz said, turning to his sister, “Look, Anya I have enough on my plate as it is. I'm sure you have more than enough resources to fix whatever problem Sturmhold - Nikolai - has gotten himself into.” Anya finally looked up at her brother, cane in hand, sitting in front of her in a big leather chair. Inej was standing by his side, a look of concern on her beautiful features. Wylan was looking like he was in a state of shock sitting next to Jesper who was looking at Kaz like he was dressed in rainbow colors and juggling baby tigers. Anya knew then that if she was going to get her brother's help she needed to come clean, about everything. “I’ve never been Novia Zem, Kaz” She said after a long moment of silence. Kaz’s head shut up quickly. “No,” He reasoned, “after you were tested-” “No Kaz. There is no secret magical place where Grisha children can be who they are outside of the second army. It’s fiction.” There were no tears in her eyes but her face displayed a look of trauma as she recounted her story. “There was a slaver in town, he offered our parents a lot of money if they would give me up. You know we were poor, we were really poor, and besides they were always terrified of my power, I displayed it so young. So, they took me, but the slaver he wasn’t, well he wasn’t really a slaver was he. Markin Yaroslavovich.” “Wait,” Jesper piped in, “I’ve heard that name before. Something about a raid on his estate in The Wandering Isle, but that's all." “Most people don’t know him, always kept under the radar.” Anya said and she gave a harsh dark laugh suddenly changing from her humorous demeanor. “He called himself a “collector” of Grisha. He was maniacally obsessed with our power and collected corporalki, like myself, and Etherealki and Materialki from all around the world. It was his life mission to create his own army, outside Ravka. That’s where I grew up, in a dark palace along with thirty other helpless Grisha. You think the conditions of the Little Palace training was bad, this was- it was hell. He experimented on us, controlled us, wanted something like Judra Palm to make us, him, more powerful. More than half of us died. Luckily he wasn’t able to get his hands
on it the judra parlm tho. Then finally when the second army got wind of what was going on they sent a rescue mission. Only three of us survived the escape, me, a squaller, and one durast. When we got to Ravka, they said we could go to the Southern Colonies and the squaller and durast did, but I- I don’t know I couldn't go to the colonies and not use my power, it was all I’ve ever known. So, I stayed.” Anya finally met Kaz’s eyes who she’d been avoiding though her own speech. “I’ve one of the best Heartrenders in the second army Kaz. I used my full name and now I’m training new Grisha in the second army. But, I am on Sturmonds crew, Nikolai does need some grisha backup every once and while.” Kaz didn't yell or glare at his sister, but listened carfully just if she was reading him a bedtime story. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Kaz said now speaking, “How did I- how did I not know” “You're used to knowing everything about everything Kaz, but Yaroslavovich was an expert of not being noticed and the whole mission was covered up by the second army, but I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. When I first met you I was traveling with Sturmhond and I just didn't, I couldn't relive it then.” “I don’t blame you for anything, Anastasia.” Anya smiled at this. “But that doesn’t explain-” “Why I’ve shown up unexpectedly with people trying to kill me, yes I know. Can Van Eck and the Sharpshooter be trusted?” “Debatable, but we’ll probably need them for whatever scheme you're planning.” Anya cocked her head in agreement. “Nikolai’s been taken.” At that Jesper spit up, yet again, his drink. “Who-” Inej cut in. “His brother Vasily, he’s always been jealous of him, but most importantly he wants the crown and he’ll do anything to do it and that means killing his brother. Nikolai, as Sturmond, was on one last recon mission before returning to Ravka, and he was ambushed. Vasily, is playing it off as a tragic accident and the whole palace and army is with him. Only me and a couple other Grisha, Zoya, Nadia Genya,a durast named David, and heartrender twins Tamar and Toyla know the truth. I left a days ago, and they are probably already questioning everyone. It’s hell at the palace now, Vasily has got everyone in a tight grasp and he's not letting go.” Kaz nodded his head, the life changing information unfazed his cold features. “How do you know that he’s not already dead? I mean why not just assassinate him and finish the job why kidnap him?” “They need him. He’s the only one who knows the secret plans for the peace treaty with Fjerda I don't even know them. They can’t risk killing him without that information, but they’ll do a lot to get it out of him. David’s narrioided down his location somewhere in Novyi Zem,” “That’s a pretty big peraminter.” Wylan piped in now sitting up in his chair. “I know, but I have several contacts there so I think I can narrow it down a bit when we get there, if you are still in.” “And what exactly would be our role in your little king rescue mission.” “I have none of Ravka’s resources with me, plus we will probably be breaking into a heavily guarded place, isn’t that your guys' thing.” “Know that does sound like fun.” Jesper said “There’s also the added benefit that you’ll be saving the entirety of Ravka from a Vasily rain. So what do you say, big brother, wanna rescue a king?”
Chapter 6 -> Chapter 7
Lifetime Masterlist
Tumblr media
The pitter pater sound of the rain hitting the roof woke you up in the middle of the night. You could have gotten back to sleep since the cold wind, along with the sound of the rain brings comfort to your body but your mind chooses to be stubborn and doesn’t let you go back to sleep by occupying your head with thoughts.
Rain somehow brings comfort to your body and to your soul, you cant put it into words but rain feels like home to you, if that even makes sense.
You slowly got up from the bed and grabbed your green jacket that was provided by survey corps after graduation. You are glad that its material is thick enough for cold weather and long enough to reach below your knee. It is suitable for winter and cold weather.
You carefully wear it and not bothering to put the belt around the waist since you can just hold it in place when you fold your arms on your chest.
Just what you’ve expected, there’s no one outside the headquarters, and only torches around the halls are the source of light.
The soreness of your feet was finally gone after you took a hot bath and after letting it rest for hours. You were glad that the pain already faded since you don’t want to miss training, and you don’t want to burden Eren since he is the only person who has the time to check up on you, considering that Mikasa, Jean, and Armin are busy just like you are.
Your feet decided to stop at the halls near the bench you always sit in, but since it’s raining, you cannot sit on it. You let out an exhale of disappointment while looking at it.
You were about to head back to your room when your eyes glanced at a faint light inside Levi’s room.
‘Why is he even up at this point?’ you thought to yourself, but then you remembered the pile of papers he was reviewing the whole day. But the idea of him leaving the candle lamp on his desk crossed your mind. With the amount of paper he has in his office, it is no doubt that it can burn the whole building in a blink of an eye.
You walked over to his door and gently knocked with your knuckles allowing only him to hear it. You heard a delicate sound of footsteps coming towards the doorway.
You were greeted by a scent of black tea and fresh lemon-scented soap when he opened the door, but that was nothing compared to a tired-looking Levi right in front of you, dark circles under his eyes, messy locks, and pale complexion.
“What are you doing here?” He casually asked as he looks at you.
“I was just checking, I thought you left your candle lit so I just-“ Shiver ran down your spine as soon as a wave of cold wind run through your body, making you hug yourself even more.
“I'm not an idiot to do that.” He replied while narrowing his eyes at you.
“Right, sorry well I-“ You glanced at his desk and you just know that he is still working on those papers and you feel bad for the man standing in front of you.
The dark circles under his eyes and pale complexion are the result of him staying up all night, but you couldn’t blame him for not getting enough sleep, if you were given a shit ton of paperwork you might as well do them if you have free time till it drives you crazy.
“I uh Captain? Do you need some help with that?” You pointed at his desk making him turn his head around to look.
“You know what, yeah you need help I insist.” You gave him a soft smile hoping that he might approve.
“No, now go to bed and get some sleep brat.” He rolled his eyes at you before attempting to close the door on your face but you were quick enough to block it with your foot.
“I can't sleep anyway so just let me do some Captain.” You softly said hoping that you can persuade him.
Levi stared at you for a good couple of seconds while he contemplates whether he should let you in or not before letting out a sigh of annoyance. He stepped back to let you enter his office.
Without a second thought, you slowly entered the familiar place and stood obediently on the side as you wait for him.
“Take a seat and do tell me why you are still up at this hour.” Not that he cares about you and your business, but as a squad captain, he needs to know since it might be something troubling his squad members. He knows that if one of his squad is not in good shape, it can affect the others that is why he needs to look after each and every one of you.
You took a seat in front of him, your hands rest on your knees as you were afraid to rest it on the table since it is filled with papers and books.
“The rain woke me up and I feel suffocated in my room, I went out for a walk and that’s when I knocked on your door sir.” You confessed to him. There was no point in keeping secrets to your Captain since it was not of a big deal to open up your struggles to others. You don’t see it as a weakness but rather the opposite of it.
Levi hums in reply to your answer as he sit on his chair. You just noticed that he is wearing a casual long thin shirt and pants, with that you remembered that you were only wearing a thin silk nightdress which made you hug yourself even tighter from the embarrassment.
“I assume you know how to write and to read. Here, read the papers and encircle the dates, names, and the sender in each letter. And put your name on top of it so I can identify in the future that you're the one who is responsible for it.” He handed you a pen and the papers you need to look into.
It was an easy job for you, reading and just encircling pieces of information is nothing to you compared to your text books in college.
With that you remembered your other life. You mentally slap yourself for forgetting that you are not in your world and how you choose to ignore your problems in exchange for a new start. You remind yourself to go to the library to find something useful about what was happening to you.
You know that this is not a dream, you have been here for days and you can feel things and see things clearly. At first, time-traveling was the first thing you thought, but then you noticed that you have a life here, if you are right then you jumped into your body but in different dimension but you don’t know how you did it nor how to goback.
You pushed your worries at the back of your head since you don’t want to overthink and have a mental breakdown in the middle of the night, let alone in front of your Captain.
As you started reading the papers, Levi was now the one who were consumed by his thoughts.
Levi clearly isn’t the type of person who butt into people’s business but there was something about you that doesn’t sit right with him, and he intends to know more. He was shocked when you obediently followed every task and command he was given to you. Sure, some people might call you a dog if he says that out loud but not him, you followed him with respect and dedication, you are straightforward and blunt to him, not afraid to say what's on your mind but not to the extent that you are rude to your superiors. Only Hange and Erwin was the only person who talks to him like that and he can't help but admit that you might be put into this to become a leader in the future, and that is something he respects.
“I didn’t know that you came from a wealthy family.” He bluntly said when he noticed the red necklace hanging on your neck that made you caught off guard.
You cock your head up to look at him before opening your mouth
“I didn't.”
Levi didn’t bother to reply and instead he only nod in response to yours before looking away at the ruby on your neck. Levi knows that it is a genuine piece of accessory because he has seen real diamonds back in the underground, not that he’s proud of but he already touched one and has seen it up close. Only a glance since they were stealing it.
“I grew up in an orphanage with Jean and I already have this since I was a child if that’s what you're wondering sir, it was my mom’s.” It may felt a little weird that you need to explain things like this but then again, who would wear something expensive like that when you're just a military personnel.
“I see, so you’ve known that brat Kirstein since forever, so why did the two of you joined military? Right decision would not just live ordinarly.”
“Well, we've thought of that, living inside the walls until we're old or if we found someone whom we would like to marry but it’s not for us.”
You were shocked that he was engaging a conversation first, you would like to ask the same question to him but you don’t want to overstep the line.
The both of you worked in silence after that and only the sound of the rain is the only thing that can be heard. You didn’t engage in a conversation since being there was enough company for the both of you and you figured that the Captain doesn’t like to be interrupted while he’s working.
It was pleasant to your mind.
The silence, the cool breeze of the wind coming from the open window and the presence of Levi felt oddly calm.
-
It has been three hours since you entered Levi’s office and your eyes are starting to feel heavy and sore from reading.
Levi on the other hand, fell asleep on his chair. He told you that he would just take a quick  break for a minute but it has already been an hour and he still hasn’t opened his eyes. You didn’t bother waking him up since you figured that he needed sleep, poor man looks and sounds tired when you asked him some questions regarding the paper you're working on.
You, on the other hand are no doubt burned from working straight all night.
You raised your arms up in the air to stretch your back and body causing it to make a ‘pop’ sound which made you froze for a second before glancing at Levi in front of you.
The peaceful look on his face while his jet black hair naturally falls on the side made you stare at him without you even noticing it. Not to mention his rolled-up sleeves while his arms are folded as his chest slowly rises and falls from breathing.
‘He’s not that bad.’ The inner voice in your head whispered.
You're not going to lie when you felt irritated by him the first you met him, he quickly judged you and he looks at you like you were some kind of a disappointment to him but that changed in a matter of day.
You seriously don't know what the hell is happening but he’s not as bad as you thought he would be.
As your mind accompany you with thoughts, your eyes are slowly giving up from being tired so you placed your arms on his desk and rested your head on it before closing your eyes.
“How do you even keep up with these paper works captain, no wonder you have no patience with us.” You whispered to yourself before you slowly fall asleep.
While you were falling asleep, Levi was already awake from his sleep, if that was even considered a sleep.
Levi was greeted with your tired features while you’re asleep when he opened his eyes. He heard everything you had just said but he pushed it aside to forget about it since he doesn’t know if you're pity or concerned.
The sun is already rising from the sky and some people are starting to wake up to do their tasks. Levi doesn’t have the energy to stand up after a very long day but he doesn’t have a choice.
It was a cold morning and he could drink some tea to refresh his mind and bring warmth to his cold body but he decided to wash up first before he makes some.
Besides, he wouldn’t want you to drink a cold bitter tea.
Funny that almost all people think that Levi doesn’t give two shit about the people around him but he actually does. He respects every person who dedicates their heart to something they want. At first, he doesn’t like the idea of it and he thinks that it’s just a bullshit mindset anyone can have but not until he met Hange and Erwin. Those two helped him not in pity and most definitely not by force but because they want to. They are the person who taught Levi how to write and read when he joined them and they didn’t judge him for his past lifestyle, especially Hange. The woman was loud and full of energy which is the complete opposite of Levi but he was thankful for them, especially at his lowest.
Levi cares for his new squad and for everyone who works hard around him. His past squad was bombed when they went into the north direction of the sea. Levi's special operation squad consists of jobs that an ordinary soldier wouldn't do, which includes going undercover, exploration outside the island for lookout, and handling confidential cases.
It wasn’t easy for Levi to see his squad getting blown and being shot. They were looking out for any ships and boats at that time even though it was dangerous since they are exploring the territory of Marleyan sea.
He doesn’t want history to repeat itself for his new squad.
Soon after Levi got out from the bathroom of his office, he immediately made tea while he dries his hair with a towel. He is not a morning person that is why he isn’t a fan of breakfast.
Levi sat on his desk and carefully placed the two cups filled with black tea in front of him before looking at your sleeping figure. He was thankful for your company and helped yesterday and last night and a cup of tea is his way of saying thank you.
He neatly arranges the papers in front of him to prevent them from getting wet from the tea, just to be sure. Levi noticed that you did more than you were given. In a span of a short time, you finished almost all of his paper works.
“Remind me not to let Hange spend a night with you. Both of you are mad.” He muttered under his breath.”
“Oi Reader, wake up it's already morning.”
Your body and mind were too tired to even open your eyes to the sound of Levi’s voice. You were now awake and slightly conscious of your surroundings, but you choose not to move.
“If you don’t move from your seat, I will personally throw you on the river.” Levi was now pissed. He doesn’t like it when he repeats himself.
You cock your head up to meet his same expressionless stare. You cover your mouth with your hand as you yawn.
“Sorry I fell asleep.” You apologized.
“It's already morning, get back to your room. We have training in two hours so I suggest getting some sleep before that.”
You nod in response before fixing your now messy hair. You felt the pain in your wrist and eyes from overworking yourself, what more later when you went out for training.
“I didn’t know sitting all night doing paperwork can make you feel like shit.” Not that you were engaging in a conversation, you wanted to let him know that you sympathize with him with how draining it is to do that let alone every night.
Levi sips on his tea before opening his mouth. “You insisted on it so deal with it.”
That sounded wrong because he worded it wrong.
He didn’t mean it to sound like a jerk but to you, he sounded like one. Levi mentally curses at himself in his head for putting his thoughts into the wrong word. Not only does he sounds ungrateful it also sounded like he doesn’t care about what you felt, which is the opposite of it.
You on the other hand were clearly mad at his response. Sure, you insisted on helping since it is your job but a simple thank you from him would make your day.
“Yeah, I will.” You coldly said before rolling your eyes at him and storm your way out to his door to leave. You slam his door as loud as you can, not caring if he will get mad at you.
Levi was left in his office irritated and sorry for what he just said. Nonetheless, he ignored what happened and decided to go on with the day and maybe he can talk to you later about it.
“So much for that though last night Sol, not even a ‘oh thank you for helping me last night sol I appreciate it’ geez.” If people can see you right now, they would thought that you're going crazy by talking to yourself and imitating a person by the tone of your voice while you stop your feet hard while walking.
“Damn, who even talks like that?”
You turn your head to the side to see Reiner leaning over a wall while holding a cup in his right hand with a grin on his face.
Reiner was one of the top 10 soldiers in your batch and he is an outstanding person due to his strength and leadership. You only talked to him twice and that was when you became a sparring partner in your training days. Reiner is cool from your perspective and gentleman even in training.
“Oh hey Reiner, sorry about that. Guess I woke up on the wrong side of the bed.” You smiled at him as you walk over closer to him.
“Figured. Why are you even on this side of the building? Visiting Jean?” Reiner asked before sipping on his mug.
“Yeah, something like that, making sure the boys aren’t causing troubles.” You lied. You didn’t want anyone to know that you spend the night at your Captain’s office since it sound so wrong.
“Bet they're a pain in the ass huh.”
“Oh please, Mikasa and I can’t even catch a break.”
The both of you laughed at your conversation. You didn’t know why but you felt shy at just laughing with him.
Reiner stopped laughing when he noticed your Ruby necklace hanging at your neck. He straightens his composure before exchanging his glance at your face and on the jewelry.
“That’s a very pretty necklace Sol, where did you buy it?” Reiner moves a little closer to you to look at the necklace. You heard a small gasp when he got a better view.
“I don’t know, I already have this since I was born.” You simply replied.
Reiner gave you a small smile as he nods at your answer.
You can't blame the people around you for asking about your necklace. It is indeed a pure Ruby and anyone who will meet you for the first time will first notice the necklace rather than your face.
“I see, it's interesting.”
“Well, I gotta go, it was nice seeing you.” You gave Reiner a last smile before marching your way back to your room.
“Sol, wait!”
You turn your head back and saw Reiner running in your direction.
“I was just wondering if, if you would like to grab something to eat sometime.” Reiner wasn’t the only one who was shy at that moment.
He was scratching the back of his head while you look away while biting your lower lip. It's not a bad idea to go out with someone, especially Reiner. He is a good man and not a trouble maker and not to mention, he's very disciplined.
“I'll think about it and ill let you know.” You softly replied before smiling at him again and started to walk away from him. It's not that you don’t want to go out with him and avoid rejection by saying that but you need your friends' opinions first.
-
“I honestly don’t see why not.” Mikasa butt in the conversation while reading a book.
“Yeah just go. If he did something funny to you, Jean and I would kick his ass.”
“Shut up Eren, I can beat his ass alone.”
“Oh yeah, Jean? Why don’t you kiss my ass then?”
“Why don’t you kiss my ass Eren?”
You throw yourself on the couch beside Mikasa while Eren and Jean continue to fight about kissing each other’s ass. You told them the conversation you had with Reiner that morning and they were pretty much supportive about it.
The idea of dating wasn’t a bad idea for you. Spending your days with a person you can lean on and love is something rare to even encounter, but not in these circumstances where you're slowly achieving your dreams, not to mention that you are still confused and know nothing about what's happening.
“But isn’t it weird that Reiner’s suddenly interested in you?” Eren suddenly asked.
The three of them dart their gaze at you to check you out that made you feel a bit uncomfortable and a pinch of insecurities are slowly coming into you.
“Stop looking at me, I'm tired and I don’t need my friends judging me just because someone asked me out geez.”
It was a hot afternoon and you just finished training with them the whole day and all of you are in Levi’s office waiting for him to report and ask for any announcement. You had not seen him in training since there was a meeting he needed to attend to and you're in charge earlier that’s why you're tired physically and mentally because of Jean’s dad jokes while training.
“Eren didn’t mean it like that. We just want to know if he’s worth it.” Mikasa pats your head for assurance before glaring at Eren.
Before you could even talk, the door suddenly opened, revealing Levi in a casual suit. Levi was surprised by all of you in his office since it has been long ever since he had a squad whom he sees after training and the sight of his squad welcoming him after a long day brings a slight joy to him.
All of you stood up and greeted him with a salute.
“All of you look like shit, we’ll train again tomorrow since I was absent earlier.”
Levi proceeds to sit on his desk before looking at everyone in the room.
Especially you.
He did not forget your little chat that morning.
“All of you are dismissed except for Reader, stay for a minute.”
Everyone left the room and only the two of you and the silence were filling the room.
“Listen, about earlier I didn’t mean to come off like that, what I meant was you just-“
“I just need to go through the day since I can.” You cut him off.
And it was indeed what he wanted to say. Levi was surprised that you understood him despite the barrier of his wordings, he was impressed at you.
“It's okay captain, I understood what you meant just a little while ago.” You smiled at him, causing him to look away.
The idea of people understanding him in this kind of situation bothers him since he grew up not being understood because of the lack of communication he has but admit it or not, Levi felt nice knowing someone understands him.
“What’s your deal?” it may be nice for him, the idea of trusting you and you being able to understand him doesn’t sit right for him.
“Excuse me sir?” You let your hands fell on your side while maintaining the broken eye contact.
“I’m sure a strong woman who topped her class wants to be a commander or Captain in the future, don’t get me wrong I'm not labeling you as a captain’s pet, but what do you really want? I'm curious because I don’t get you.”
You thought for a moment about what he said. The truth is you don’t want to lead and you also don’t know what you want in the future.
You thought about what you did wrong that made him feel like you want something just because you were acting like yourself and the idea of Levi thinking that you want something from him that’s why you're being kind to him somewhat brought pain to your heart.
‘What did you have to go through to think like that?’
“I need nothing captain, I just want to do my job so you don’t have to worry about me kissing your ass because I want something in return. I would just like to be there with you and do my job since you trusted me for being your assistant.” Yo genuinely smiled at him to show your sincerity.
But your voice is enough for Levi to know that you are indeed sincere.
“Fine, you are dismissed. Be here in my office early in the morning tomorrow, we need to attend a meeting.”
“Yes sir.” You calmly replied to him.
You looked at him for a second before leaving his office.
You haven’t even known him for that long, yet you do feel some kind of connection.
Maybe it’s because of being not understood and heard, or perhaps it’s the drive to do excellent at your jobs.
Who knows, not even you know, and not even you knows that he felt the same.
And it's eating the both of you.
quarantine blues
hey! sorry it’s been a minute since ive posted. a new chapter of unexpected should be up soon and it’s set a bit into the future. this fic i had a couple of prints for and kinda combines them, so i hope y’all like it and are doing well and staying safe!
Amelia dramatically sighed as she fell back into the couch. Scout had been especially fussy lately, Link acted as though he was a child and not an adult, and the kids were giving her a hard time. She knew everyone was under a great deal of discomfort and stress regarding quarantine and the pandemic, but she was at her wits end being blamed by the kids. As if she had planned the whole pandemic to happen just so they could be isolated from their mother. As easy as it was to lose her temper she knew she was the adult and could process her emotions, the kids were still kids so she knew she couldn’t expect the same level of understanding from them. She glanced over to the digital clock reading ‘3:27am’, she hadn’t been able to sleep with Scouts sporadic eating schedule, and resented her boyfriend for being able to get a somewhat decent nights sleep. She knew she shouldn’t have been complaining because Link was up all day wrestling the kids to do their homework and keeping them occupied, so her having to stay up taking care of the baby should’ve been a somewhat fair trade off. But Amelia was mad at everything, all she wished was for none of this to have happened.
“Auntie Amelia?” A small voice came from the dark hallway of the living room, slightly starling the older woman.
“Zozo? What’s the matter?” She reached her arms out for the girl, but she sat at the other end of the couch, so she awkwardly put her arms back to her sides. The girl shrugged her shoulders and looked down at her hands. “I can’t help if you don’t talk to me.”
“I-is my mom dead?” Zola asked tears forming in the corners of her eyes, as much as she didn’t want to ask she was desperate for an answer.
“No.” Amelia said firmly, yet reassuringly. “She’s sick, but she has an amazing team of doctors working for her, and they put her in something called a trial to try some medicine out to see if it’ll help her.” She stood up and sat a little closer to the girl, but respected the girls desire for space.
“Why can’t we speak to her? We used to FaceTime her when she was working and then we did for a little bit just when she got sick but now we never get to.”
“Your moms in something called a coma. Her body just needs a little break. It’s kind of like a really really long nap.”
“She’s not dead?”
“She’s not dead.”
“Good.” Zola nodded, before tears streamed down her eyes. Amelia couldn’t help herself and she wrapped the girl in her arms and the girl happily obliged allowing her tears to fall onto her aunts shirt. “Could she die though?”
“Your mom is a fighter, she’s been through so so so much and she’s always survived. There is a possibility though, there’s a lot of things we don’t know about this virus. Your mom’s as strong as they get though.” As much as Amelia wanted to lie and say that Meredith was going to be fine, she knew it wasn’t fair to the girl. Zola was wise beyond on her years, she would’ve seen right through the lies. Kids like Zola need the whole truth so they could properly access the situation themselves. “I want you to know you have a big group of people who love you so so so much. And whatever happens your gonna be okay.”
“Thanks auntie Amelia.”
“Of course. I’m always here if you need to talk.” Zola nodded and allowed herself to fall deeper into her aunts embrace.
________________________________________
Once Amelia settled Zola into bed she made her way into her own bedroom where she found her boyfriend cradling their wide awake son. She smiled at the sight and quietly moved to sit beside the pair, leaning her head on his shoulder. She was content being in the presence of her favorite people, here it felt like nothing was wrong in the world it was just the three of them. A soft knock jarring her out of her peaceful thoughts, she stood up to open the door revealing a distraught Bailey.
“Hey what’s the matter?”
“I had a bad dream.” He confessed softly, clinging his arms to wrap around his aunts legs.
“Want to sleep with me and Uncke Link tonight?” He nodded and walked over to their bed making himself comfortable in the middle of it. Amelia smiled and made her way over to her side of the bed, and pulled the boy into her embrace. “May I ask what your dream was about?”
“I don’t remember. I just remember waking up scared.” He nuzzled his head into his aunts shoulder.
“It’s pretty scary right now.” The older woman confessed, the young boy nodding in agreement. “It’s come to my attention I haven’t really been explaining what’s happening with your mom right now. The only reason she hasn’t called is because she’s in this thing called a coma so basically she’s just sleeping for a little bit until her body is ready to work better. Make sense?”
“Yeah.” He said softly. His dream had been about his mother which made him sad and scared. He was sad he didn’t get to see her, and scared because he knew she was sick. But his aunts reassurances made him a little less scared. “Can I ask a question?”
“Of course.” Amelia nodded, slightly scared for the question that was about to come her way, but to her luck her boyfriend had just put the baby in his crib allowing him to slipinto their bed behind her shifting them all towards the left side, so she knew wasn’t going to face this question alone.
“What happens if my mommy doesn’t get better? Will Me and Zola and Ellis go to an orphanage?”
“No, you won’t. You’ll stay right here at home, with Uncle Link, auntie Maggie and I.” She loved these kids as her own and would do anything for them, but hoped it wouldn’t come to that. They need Meredith, she was their mother. There were so many things she’s still needed to teach her kids, and things she still needed her sisters guidance on.
“But guess what, Bailey?” Link said wrapping his arm around his girlfriend to comfort her a bit. “Your mom is super duper strong, kinda like ‘The Hulk’ she’s a fighter, and I know she’s fighting really really hard for you and your sisters.”
“My moms nothing like ‘The Hulk’” Bailey giggled at the ridiculous statement.
“Your wrong she’s a lot like him. She’s super strong, super smart, she heals people, and have you seen her when she gets mad?” The young boy seemed to consider this before admitting his uncle had a point. Amelia fell asleep between the two as they rambled on about superheroes, before the two also succumbed to sleep.
_______________________________________
“Hey Elle Belle.” Amelia smiled as she leaned against the doorway to her room. After her conversations with the other kids she needed to check in and see how the youngest was holding up.
“Hi.” The girl sighed softly, looking up from her dolls.
“Can I play with you?” The girl simply nodded in response, her aunt lowering herself down slowly onto the floor next to her niece. Ellis explained the characters and what was happening, and the two played peacefully with one another, before the girl spoke up.
“When will we be able to go back to school, and when will mommy come home from work?” The girl put the doll she was playing with down and expectingly looked at her aunt.
“I don’t know.” Amelia admitted honestly. “But the more everyone cooperates and follows the rules the sickness could go away faster. And once the doctors find a vaccine that’ll help a lot too.”
“Are you making a vaccine? Or mommy or auntie Maggie?”
“No, we aren’t those kinds of doctors. Your auntie Maggie is helping people with the sickness feel better, and right now your mom has the sickness, but she has a really really good group of doctors work on her.”
“That’s good. All the doctors mommy works with are really smart.”
“Yeah, your right.” The neurosurgeon smiled to herself, Ellis had been picking up on Links optimism.
“Will you need to go back to work?”
“Well.” Amelia felt useless being at the house, while people were dying everyday, but she had a baby who depended on her and a trio of kids who did as well. “Not right now, I’m still on maternity leave. If they need help with a case I’ll go in, but I’m going to be here with you kids.”
“That’s good.” Ellis nodded twirling the dolls hair in her hand. “I’d be sad if we couldn’t see you. Like we can’t see mommy and auntie Maggie.” The girl then moved herself and into her aunts lap.
“I’m not going anywhere.” Amelia whispered holding the girl tightly, trying her hardest not to cry.
let's hear about FFVIII seifer, if you're still doing this XD
Why I like them: You know my tastes. A green-eyed man is introduced throwing fireballs around, is kind of a condescending jerk but in a fun way, instigates deep conversations on high ground while staring at the sunset...Well, before we even get to villainy, immolation, and redemption arc, I start going “Is this a favorite character?”  I’m joking...kind of. Some of that does factor in, even the fire.
Okay, so my favorite thing about Seifer’s arc is that, in the limited focus he’s given, he’s complex and layered from the beginning, and his villain arc is a clear and fascinating illustration of “No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks” ….with a side of brainwashing.
Let’s break this down:
What are some of the words used to describe him by those that know him (by himself, by Squall, by Fuu and Rai)? Romantic. Idealistic. Sensitive. He is the one who believes in making a difference in the world--not just as a wish or goal, but as an imperative to do what your heart says is right even if it’s going to cost you--where Squall is just follow-the-orders-and-do-the-job. If you’re already reading this and objecting, I’m not saying Squall doesn’t care...obviously he does, defrosting Mr. Go Talk to a Wall and getting him to a place where he admits how many layers of mask he wears is his character development...but Seifer isn’t just a hothead. He wears his heart on his sleeve.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to deny that Seifer can be an abrasive, self-serving, hypocritical jackass sometimes,  who can fight dirty, wants to “wreak some havoc,” and has a history as a bully--though, gentlefolk of the jury, I submit to the courts that he puts on a tough act like Squall does and they are both different flavors of trying to mimic toxic alpha male--but let’s not forget that some of his establishing character moments are throwing out his future to disobey orders because he sees that the higher-ups have possibly misjudged the situation and civilians could be in danger, and, again, going AWOL because he thinks Squall and Rinoa could be killed. And he calls himself the white knight and holds up a code of honor until the end, even though it gets twisted. He is about duty and honor, with honor even over duty.
Oh, this was only going to be the beginning. I haven’t even begun to touch on what I would want to touch on--this is just surface personality and the beginning of the game before we even get to joining Sorceress Edea, and even then not all I would say-- but this post isn’t actually supposed to be my Ted talk on what you missed if you just think of Seifer as a recurring boss fight. Let’s move on.
ONE MORE THING ACTUALLY. Even though we see a lot of Seifer at his worst, you can use Fujin and Raijin as a mirror. What do they say near the end of the game if we paraphrase/summarize? They knew pretty early on, before even the senseless slaughter and torture era that Seifer was going down a dark path with the sorceress, but they knew it wasn’t him and stayed with him, not because they agreed with his actions, wanted power, or out of fear, but to take care of him and try to break through to him--and not because they are saints, but because he, despite what had happened in the past year, is the type of person who deserves and inspires that kind of loyalty. Let’s think on that.
Now the rest goes under a read more, because I am going to keep rambling and be wordy
Why I don’t: He can be an asshole, and he’s an asshole in an embarrassing way. As in, if one is trying to say he’s not the little punk his KH counterpart is, you remember he still uses the insult chickenwuss (though that is a legacy insult/nickname since he’s known Zell since childhood--and, fyi, Squall uses it too) and he had a little gang in school. Even once he’s a military commander of an evil army set on world domination, he has some moments where his level of petty undermines him.
Favorite episode (scene if movie): The Dollet mission
Favorite line: Sorry, not sorry that the following is my favorite exchange of lines and that the prison torture scene is another of my favorite scenes. For context, Seifer has captured Squall, has him hanging up on the wall in crucified hero imagery, implied to be shirtless even though his character model isn’t because they talk about scar tissue or lack thereof from a recent shoulder injury/Squall being stabbed in the chest/shoulder area. Seifer has been electrocuting Squall for information. By this point, I might as well have put the whole scene here. Also, I am now going to blame Squall and Seifer text boxes in FFVIII for my own abuses of ellipses...
Seifer: " I was hoping you'd be there, Squall. So... how'd I look in my moment of triumph? My childhood dream, fulfilled. I've become the sorceress' knight."
Squall: [internal monologue] ...Sorceress' knight... ...His...romantic dream...? But... Seifer... Now, you're just a…[Out loud] "... torturer."
[Squall passes out.]
Seifer: "What did you say? [Steps closer] Passed out cold, eh? This is the scene where you swear your undying hatred for me! The tale of the evil mercenary versus the sorceress' knight!”
This isn’t just me all “mmm, tension.” Seifer has passed the moral event horizon, and it’s not just faceless NPCs that are collateral damage anymore. We’ve seen him on screen torture the protagonist, who is also one of the only people who he’s shown to have a real bond with that goes beyond superficial. Then we get this and see Seifer thinks he’s the good guy still, on a noble mission where he’s had to make painful sacrifices, and Squall is a representative of the power-hungry evil. Seifer’s been playing a different game, and had his will twisted via magic.
Favorite outfit: The Amano art where the white coat is cast off and he’s wearing the simple black shirt and black jeans under it. Symbolic? Maybe. I wouldn’t give up the coat though. I love the long white/gray coat, the outer embodiment of wanting to wear the white hat, but the desire easily getting tarnished, and the red cross that turns into a sword and becomes Seifer’s symbol and soon to appear other places, emblazoned nice and big on the sleeve. It’s the Cross of Saint James. TRADITIONALLY red represents the blood of Christ, the three lilies represent the honor of the apostle and reference Christ as lily of the valley, and the sword shape represents the torture that St.James suffered before his murder. HOWEVER, my opinion is that here it’s more vague/altered symbolism (For starters, there are other gods not the Christian God in this world) with a side of “looks cool.” We still have something that clearly calls to mind a mission from on high, innocence in the lilies, blood and blood cost, and then war/violence with the sword. And I love it.
OTP: Seifer/Squall. I should not even start, but lest you think I am just in it for kinky torture scenes: We have these two who, in the beginning, are generally callous or mocking toward everyone, but make each other laugh/smile, see who each other are underneath and describe each other in “soft” terms even if they tease each other for it, repeatedly check in on each other to see if the other is okay, respect each other’s opinion and skills, and...you get the idea. In the words of Zell Dincht, I thought you two were rivals, but you’re all buddy-buddy.
Pause for a second and let’s just say first impression. That opening fight where they scar each other’s faces? It takes place outside Balamb Garden and the area is shown so we see they are alone. Squall passes out. Squall wakes up in the infirmary within the Garden base. Squall has to explain what happened; people don’t already know. This kind of implies after Squall passed out, Seifer, bleeding from a head wound himself, picked Squall up and carried him home, allowing himself to collapse only when Squall was being safely tended to, because he’s that extra. This is his first (okay, second, after fireballs and face slashing) action in the game even though it’s offscreen. I mean, he could have also just called for help/ran for help, but that’s less fun.
 Seifer is so concerned with being a badass, but he’s admits to Squall all he’s ever wanted was to be the fairytale knight, not a mere soldier. Vulnerability and confession he wants romance....with the first time it’s brought up in game being while they are watching the sun set together, the traditional Square Red Sunset of Shipping.
Seifer hesitates to defy orders, not for himself, but until he sees Squall is with him. Even though there were other “children of destiny” who all came from the same orphanage, Squall and Seifer were the ones who were never apart, never adopted until it was by a military/mercenary training program, and, even though it may speak more to brotherly than romantic from some angles, there’s a feeling of being the same, knowing each other down to the atoms, adopting an us against the world mindset that trumps trying to best each other when it comes down to it because they are the only constant. When Squall has his breakdown/ breakthrough of why he pushes people away/doesn’t let himself care/tries not to need anyone because people leave/are taken from him and he is scared he isn’t worthy of love and happiness until Rinoa challenges him, this may seem like a dismissal of Seifer, but you can also look at it from “I had no friends or family. I didn’t even have interest in speaking to anyone. I strived to be an unfeeling machine, because all emotion is pain...But also I couldn’t go 48 hours without seeing Seifer.”
Yeah, yeah, we know their main form of hanging out was beating the tar out of each other, but sometimes, especially in older media, this was its own brand of subtext. For more on how Seifer miiiight just view sparring let’s point out that “Isn’t this ROMANTIC?” and “Kneel” as a less easily interpreted as innuendo version of  “I want you on your knees” are battle quotes even in Kingdom Hearts sooo draw your own conclusion.
We get a line where Squall makes it clear these were friendly matches looked at as pushing their limits beyond what they are allowed to in sanctioned spars, and he feels prepared to take on anything  now because of Seifer. Is it healthy communication  in real life? No! Is this real life? No! Plus, the facial scar was an accident, pretty clearly...on Seifer’s side...I could write another essay on how Seifer draws first blood, but it’s because on Squall’s failed block, AND THEN SQUALL GETS ANGRY AND RETALIATES WITH CLEAR PURPOSE AND MAKES THE OPENING SHOT INTO THE FIRST SIGN GOOD VERSUS BAD GUY ISN’T SO CLEAR CUT (even though they both shouldn’t have been going so hard in a friendly training match to begin with).
 Seifer’s later, repeated threats/expressed desire to give Squall additional scars once he goes evil? That is a different animal, and a horrible one, objectively. Not objectively? No comment. Okay, one comment. Mark you as mine. Two comments. He knows Squall’s lost some memories and he can’t stomach being the next thing forgotten so Squall needs physical reminders.
Hmmm, I was supposed to be talking about the ship, not just the sparring and scars. We can wrap it up with a Marge Simpson. “I just think they’re neat”
BUT ONE MORE THING
Squall’s jacket when he becomes Leon in Kingdom Hearts. His outfit is mostly the same, right? Except the back of the jacket now has a red patch of an emblem (of Rinoa’s angel wings, not Seifer’s cross...for the OT3 feel), and his fight with Sora he throws a fireball like Seifer’s signature. Just, you know, if you want bonus references/feeling.
Brotp: Fuu and Rai. They are willing to commit war crimes with this man, nurse him back from death’s door, and go into exile with him if he can’t return to a normal life even after a redemption arc. This section deserves to be long, but I am beginning to get talked out. Don’t take that as devaluing the friendship though. I’m glad he was allowed to keep his ride or dies in Kingdom Hearts. FRIENDSHIP! They love him, ya know?
Head Canon: What we see of him at the end of the game is a temporary situation and after he heals and refreshes for awhile he’d go back to Balamb and face consequences for his actions, and probably insist on consequences instead of leaning into “an evil sorceress bespelled me and slowly took my free will.” No hiding away in the wilderness. No crossing into and living his life in Esthar. No, “but in the end I broke free and would have been an active, onscreen part of saving the world if Square had let me join the party!” He would insist on being cast into a deep, dark cell. Squall uses pull to get him pardoned, but not before just, flat out, yelling at him for being a martyr.
Unpopular opinion: He did love Rinoa. It may have been a “shallow love,” but he wasn’t just dating her to pass time or because she played into his damsel who needs a hero mindset. There was emotion. He was prepared to die for her and Squall in Timber, and almost did--only being saved by Sorceress Edea...which wasn’t a kindness, but it all worked out in the end. Sure, he gets mind-controlled into using Rinoa as, basically, a human sacrifice and it isn’t Rinoa he wants stripped and brought to his room when we’re taking prisoners, but he cared about her. He does taunt her about their past relationship, but we’ve already established this is just part of his communication skillset.  Yes, I will elaborate more if asked, though it’s more feeling based than text based.
A wish: If there’s ever a sequel, let him have put out the good in the world that was his dream and be seen as a hero. Let us see a matured and peaceful Seifer.
An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: My one fear if they ever remake FFVIII instead of just porting it, is that some of the creative team have said they like the fan theory where you are dead part way through the game and the rest is a dying dream or purgatory. It’s creative stuff; I will say that. It’s not my favorite, and I don’t agree, but those kinds of fan interpretations when they go in depth are super cool. PLEASE LET THE INTEREST IN IT JUST BE THE SAME AS MINE OF THINKING IT’S CREATIVE BECAUSE MAKING THIS  CANON WOULD BE SO, SO BAD FOR EVERY CHARACTER.
5 words to best describe them: stubborn, misguided, paladin, romantic, petty
My nickname for them: I don’t really have one
TBHK theory: is Tsukasa really the "abuser"? + the meaning of the ropes
So I know that it is a common belief in the fandom that Hanako was abused by someone close to him since he did say that "he forgives it". And since he forgives it, it's obvious that it must be someone important to him, right? And that someone is most likely Tsukasa... or is it?
Tumblr media
The reason why we think that is because of Hanako's reactions to when he runs into Tsukasa. So I guess a lot of us just assumed that he reacted that way because he's scared of Tsukasa. But I think that rather being scared of Tsukasa, he's scared of himself. Remember when he jumped on Yashiro after Tsukasa first showed up? I can't find the post anymore but I do remember someone saying that reenacting a past traumatic experience is a common way to "deal" with it. Thus he jumped on Yashiro to emulate that because seeing Tsukasa made him remember when he killed him. Which is why he's always so uncomfortable around Tsukasa: because it makes him think of a traumatic event. Not necessarily because Tsukasa was the "abuser".
We also have this image:
Tumblr media
Which makes us think that Tsukasa might be the abuser because Hanako is bound by ropes while a shadow that looks like Hanako is saying something in his ear. A common idea here, is that the shadow is Tsukasa, however I'm not sure about that. If it really is Tsukasa, then why does he not have the patch on his right cheek? It might just be me, but besides the clothes, I think that the obvious way to tell Hanako and Tsukasa apart is the patches they have on their cheeks. Hanako's is on his left cheek and Tsukasa's is on the right. But as we can see the shadow doesn't have Tsukasa's patch. If the shadow does have a patch then it's on the side that we can't see: the left side, the same as Hanako's.
Thus, I think that this shadow might, or might not be a metaphoric representation of Hanako himself, fucking himself over and tying himself town out of guilt because he killed his brother. Hanako is blaming himself. After all, we can also see the knife being bound as a way to remind himself of what he did.
Oh, and let's talk about the ropes.
Another belief is that maybe Hanako was abused with ropes, that Tsukasa may have been into... bondage?? And he did that to his twin brother?? This doesn't sound right, doesn't it?
Tumblr media
Tsuchigomori says: "you're always covered in cuts and bruises" but there's no mention of ropes. I mean, I'm only assuming here, but if the abuser really did use ropes then wouldn't they be easy to see? Tsuchigomori also says that it happens every single day so all the bruises he has on his body must always be fresh/recent, right? I would guess that rope bruises are really easy to identify whether you're a nurse or a normal person.
But then... What the hell do the ropes mean?! Well I have an easy answer to give: those ropes are a recurring theme in TBHK.
Almost all of the covers of the volumes have ropes on them and even side art from Aida.
Look at this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So there could be 2 different explanations for this:
1) Aida likes drawing ropes
2) Ropes are a metaphor for something
I think it's obviously answer n°2.
Maybe what I'm going to say sounds super obvious, but I feel like ropes are a way to show us that all of those characters are "bound" together. Their stories and lives are all tied together since they're all important characters in the story and they're the ones to move the plot forward.
We can see it especially here:
Tumblr media
The rope is tied to Hanako's pinky finger, and most times, in Japanese culture they call that the "red string of fate". Basically, you're tied to someone else. Which is most times your soulmate. That whole rope thing means that all of those characters' fates are tied to eachother.
But now the last point: if I don't think that the abuser is Tsukasa and that the rope doesn't mean that Hanako was abused with ropes then what the hell does this all mean? Who's the abuser?
Well to be honest... I don't know.
I think the obvious answer here would be their parents. I mean, we know nothing about them. Where are they?? Could Hanako and Tsukasa be orphans?
Maybe they were abused in the orphanage, after all, it's common knowledge that Japanese orphanages are shit. (Or at least they were shittier back then, maybe now it's better but I'm not a specialist in the subject.)
Also, isn't it weird how we always saw past Hanako but never past Tsukasa? Why? Why haven't we seen him yet? Maybe because Tsukasa was abused even more than Hanako.
Let me explain: we got this whole explanation
Tumblr media
This is in chapter 46 when Amane was talking about Scorpius and Antares, and how they're actually twin stars but that one of the 2 is brighter than the other so you can only see one of them. (Sorry for the quality of the image, I can't find better.)
This is obviously a metaphor for Amane and Tsukasa. So what does it all mean?
Well, long story short: I think that Tsukasa wasn't allowed to go to school while Amane was.
If my orphanage theory is correct, then I would guess that the orphanage had funding issues (I mean, it's a problem even to this day and not only in Japan. Orphanages being short on money because the governement doesn't care enough to help abandoned kids is ocurrent.)
So I don't find that hard to believe that the orphanage might've been like "Fuck it! Let' send the older twin brother to school and the younger one can stay here. We can't afford to send all of our children to school after all." I mean it's weird, right? That in the flashback Tsuchigomori didn't even mention Tsukasa. If Tsukasa was really going to school and was the abuser then wouldn't Tsuchigomori be like "oh, it's weird how your twin brother doesn't have any bruises while you do. Is he the one to do this?"
But no. There is absolutely no mention of Tsukasa whatsoever. Which is really, really weird. I had twins in my classroom throughout elementary school and middle school and they were always put in the same classroom. So if Tsukasa really did go to school I would guess that they would not only be in the same classroom, but also Tsuchigomori would bring him up.
Thus while Amane was in school, Tsukasa was the one being abused, and that's why he's so fucked in the head. Because Tsukasa was actually the one getting most of the beatings, the cuts and the bruises.
Of course, school in Japan lasts longer than in the west with the clubs and all. But I would guess that Amane didn't join a club because he wanted to get back as quickly as possible to help his brother. That's why Amane didn't have any friends. Because he would always rush to the orphanage after school.
I think, Amane being the caring big brother he is, he would take the abuse instead of Tsukasa when he was "home" to protect him as much as he could, but since he was at school most of the time, Tsukasa was the one taking most of the beatings.
And since Amane was going to school, I would guess that they went "easier" on him so the teachers wouldn't call the cops on them. That's also why Amane decided "not to go anywhere anymore."
Tumblr media
Because whenever he's away from his brother, Tsukasa gets hurt. Amane decided to throw his dream away to protect Tsukasa from the abusers.
And so, that is also why I think that Tsukasa has a mental illness. That's why he's so much more emotionally unstable than Amane. Hanako has obviously problems too, but Tsukasa is the one who got the short end of the stick.
I would guess, Tsukasa may be a sociopath at this point. A current belief, is that sociopaths like to hurt animals/kill them to feel something. When someone is abused, what the brain does is to "repress" emotions to feel less pain. That's how different mental illnesses get born.
For example, "dissociating" to feel like you're not you, to believe that it's someone else who's suffering right now your brain tries to make you believe that you're "out" of your body.
Dissociative personality disorder makes you develop multiple personalities inside yourself so you can switch between them and feel like you're safe while another personality is taking the abuse for you.
And then, of course, sociopathy, your brain "turns off" your emotions for you to stay "sane" but funnily enough, in the long run it makes you insane since you can't feel emotions in normal situations anymore.
A lot of mental illnesses come from traumatic experiences, they're defensive mechanisms after all. Mental illnesses are your brain trying to protect you from excessive pain...
This got dark real quick, sorry.
Anyway, this whole theory started with a thought I had: "Why would a sibling, not to mention a TWIN, abuse his brother?"
The conclusion I came to is: they wouldn't.
I'm not saying that it's definitely impossible at a 100% but I always found that weird how everyone thinks that a twin sibling would abuse his other sibling. Especially since twins are so close.
And to end it all...
I think that what went down with the Yugi siblings is that, one day they decided to end it all. They couldn't take the suffering anymore so they decided to kill themselves.
But right at the end, Tsukasa's emotions finally kicked in and he got scared at the last moment. And so, he begged Amane to finish the job. Amane then got traumatized from killing his brother and he ran to the girls' bathroom and hung himself out of guilt. Or maybe he also stabbed himself like Tsukasa? Who knows.
Chapter One: Panamanian Jail
Camila Drake knew she didn’t lead a normal life, especially with her brothers Nathan and Samuel Drake. She’d never thought she’d be sitting in a Panamanian jail with them and their partner Rafe Adler. She was glued to Sam’s side as he gambled for cigarettes, but she looked over at her brother Nathan and getting the crap kicked out of him.
“Ah, ¿podemos ganar a la chica? (Ah, can we win the girl?)” A prisoner asked. giving Camila a suggestive look.
Samuel smiled for sure, but by the way Sam tensed next to her, Cami knew that irritated him. He looked up at the prisoner and replied, “Lo siento, pero ella está fuera de los límites. (Sorry, but she’s off limits).”
“¿Por qué? Ella es tuya? (Why? Is she yours?)”
“Es mi hermana. (She’s my sister).” Sam said, more snappy now.
“Vuelve a jugar por tus cigarrillos. (Go back to playing for your cigarettes).” Camila said lowly.
The prisoner jumped back before Sam let out a soft chuckle. “That’s my girl.”
Camila nuzzled against Sam before looking at him. “I’m going to Rafe. See you soon?”
Sam nodded and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before she stood up. Camila made her way towards Rafe as he gave her a soft smile.
“Hey Cami.” He hummed.
“Hi Rafe.”
“You doing okay? I know these guys can be like animals.”
“Nothing I can’t handle.”
Rafe sighed and ran his fingers through his chestnut hair before closing his eyes. If only you knew, he thought to himself. He was caught off guard when Camila pressed herself up against him, but he didn’t object. He felt his heart flutter a bit as he protectively wrapped an arm around her waist.
“I don’t like the way they look at you.” Rafe mumbled.
“You sound jealous.” Camila joked.
Rafe laughed a bit and shook his head. “Just protective. Your brothers were very hesitant on bringing you with us.”
“Yeah, well I don’t blame them. I’m their youngest and only sister.”
Rafe tilted his head and smirked faintly. “I’ve never seen two siblings so protective.”
“I wouldn't trade them for the world.”
Rafe felt his serious nature crumbling as he held the girl close to him. He ignored Sam’s suspicious glare as he rested his head on top of Camila’s. Camila nuzzled her nose against his cheek and closed her eyes with a content sigh. Rafe wished he could stay like this the whole time, even if Camila didn’t feel the same way he did.
But he couldn’t. Nate was back. Camila turned her head when she saw her brother, and she and Rafe made their way over to the two brothers. Her eyes widened when she saw the bruises on Nate’s face.
“Are you okay?” She asked worriedly, cupping his face in her hands and examining his bruises.
“Just another day at the office.” Nate smiled.
Camila nodded and took a step back as her brother led them somewhere more private. She stayed pressed against Sam’s side as Nate pulled out a cross. He handed it to Camila, who examined it with a furrowed brow.
“Hodie mecum eris in paradiso.” Rafe hummed.
“Today you will join me in paradise.” Sam chimed in.
“That’s what Jesus said to Dismas on the cross.” Camila added.
“How do you two know that?” Rafe asked.
“Grew up in a Catholic orphanage.”
As they were getting ready to leave, the gang Nathan was fighting found them and cornered them.
“Heyyyy, Gustavo.” Nate said, glancing over at his siblings.
“Te voy a destripar y llevarme a tu hermana. (I’m going to gut you and take your sister.)”
Camila gulped and took a step behind Rafe since she was closest to him. She watched as Gustavo eyed her like a predator as Rafe moved to a more protective position in front of her.
“Come on Gustavo, let’s talk about this.” Sam pleaded as Gustavo started walking towards the four of them.
Soon enough, the four of them were in a fight. Gustavo ended up pinning Camila against a locker, which caused the girl to whimper.
“Tu hermano trató de mantenerte alejado de mí. (Your brother tried to keep you from me).” Gustavo purred.
“Sam!” She squeaked as her oldest brother’s head snapped up.
“Leave her alone!”
Sam knocked Gustavo to the ground as prison guards found them. Camila slumped to the ground as Sam ran over to her, gently taking her hands.
“Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”
Camila shook her head as the prison guards pulled them up and pinned both of them against the lockers. Vargas brought the four of them to his office as he closed the door.
“There was nothing in the tower.” Vargas mocked. “I couldn’t find anything.”
“Vargas-” Nate started.
The guard pulled out a gun as Camila tensed up behind Nate and Sam.
“We can work something out.” Rafe reasoned.
Vargas hummed, polishing his gun as he thought about it. He then spoke. “I want half.”
“Half?” Camila retorted.
“You can get 20%.” Sam said.
“400 million divides nicely by 5.” Nate chimed in.
Vargas hummed and nodded. “Fine.”
“Now put your gun away and quit acting like a third world thug.” Rafe snapped.
Without a second thought, Rafe stabbed Vargas in the side, which caused the gun to fire into the roof. Camila flinched into Nate’s body as the gun went off before the alarm began sounding.
“We need to move.” Rafe commanded.
“You... You stabbed him.” Camila whispered.
The four began trying to escape the prison. It was absolute chaos. They were almost to the escape, but Sam had gotten pinned down.
“Sam jump! I’ll catch you!” Nate called.
Sam jumped, but the sound of gunfire rang through the air.
“No...” Nate whispered.
Sam smiled as he coughed up blood, which caused Camila to race over. She tried to grab him, but he fell right as she reached him.
“Sam!” She called.
Rafe went over to the two. “He's gone. We need to go.”
“No. We can’t leave him!”
“Nate, we need to go.”
Camila gently pulled her other brother up as the three made their way to the escape boat. She closed her eyes and plugged her nose as she plummeted towards the water.
Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E91 (Jan. 21, 2020)
Good evening, everyone! Sorry about missing last week; @eponymous-rose was out of town and I had some other commitments. Regardless, here we are! Brian is looking handsome and cold, as are Sam & Travis on the couch. Everyone is wearing coats. Is the heat broken?
That said, tonight’s guests are Travis Willingham & Sam Riegel.
Brian starts us off asking Sam if he’s remaking the Wire in Beverly Hills. Sam basically embodies that hello fellow kids meme tonight in a hand-knitted beanie from his wife, a bomber jacket, a yellow tee, and skinny jeans. They quickly photoshop in smoke trailing out of his mouth. We’re just a few minutes in and this is off the rails already.
Announcements: The next issue (#5) of Vox Machina comics comes out Wednesday, Feb. 19! It’s also available online at Dark Horse Digital and Comixology. And that’s it! Huh.
Episode 91: Stone to Clay
Brian tells us this is the first time ever to have Sam & Travis alone on Talks. I’m stunned and so are they. Sam says, “between me, Brian, Dani, and Travis right now, there’s four tens on this show right now.”
We’re already into questions less than ten minutes into the show. Truly this is a remarkable night.
63 in game days and 21 episodes passed between Caduceus’s first mention of Stone (episode 71) and Fjord connecting the dots. Travis blames the internet connection and his really bad ADHD night, as that was the night he and Laura remoted in from the hotel.
Brian tells us that when Ashley used to skype in, she could only see Matt & couldn’t see or really hear anyone else.
Travis says there was a huge delay for him between mouths moving and the audio coming through, and then that audio was pretty distorted. Laura could handle it okay, but Travis just heard a jumble and couldn’t parse it.
Sam took a CBD bath the other day and found it exactly as relaxing as a normal bath. Sam & Travis commiserate about taking baths only to have their knees pop out of the water. Tall people problems smh
Caleb & Nott completed the spell in less than a week, including dealing with the Angel of Irons & brokering peace treaties. Travis though the laughter was going to be Helas.
Travis says he definitely didn’t hear the name the first time (he remembered dust but not stone from the lava pits). “Look! Yes! No, I was not listening before! Thursday nights are my times to enjoy my friends and food! Marisha is an amazing note-taker; why would I ever take my own? This is how I got through college!”
Sam says he keeps a mission checklist in his head and has for ages. He has a page in his notebook labeled “To Do” that includes things like visiting Kiri or Shakaste, in case they have downtime and need ideas.
Travis asks if he continues writing in his (apparently) very small handwriting, and Sam says he has to leave room for Laura to draw all her dicks. They all marvel that she is actually a very good artist.
Travis honestly still thinks the Stone name is a huge coincidence, especially since Taliesin didn’t have access to Fjord’s last name when he created Caduceus’s last name and backstory. Sam challenges Travis that even if that were true, doesn’t he think Matt will find a way to tie it together?
Travis says Fjord doesn’t want anything to do with the last name and it’s not even his real name. He’s not convinced this isn’t a coincidence.
Travis did a lot of research into orphanage naming conventions when coming up with Stone. He does have a backstory as to how the orphanage manager picked Stone as his name.
Travis thinks Matt would have emphasized the Stone name more sooner if it had been a true connection and not coincidence.
Brian: “He does like to take credit for coincidences, doesn’t he?”
Nott didn’t think there was a catch in the ritual; Sam was more surprised they were allowed to achieve the milestone at all. He was shocked it happened so soon in the story and that the spell is relatively easy to cast.
He didn’t know it would fail, but there was a moment when he wasn’t sure if he wanted to go through with it. Travis agrees everyone was shocked when it didn’t work.
Fjord’s current stance on faith and destiny hasn’t changed since the last time he discussed it. Faith is a slow thing for Fjord and he really does think the name is a coincidence.
Sam as a player is excited to see what comes next for Nott; “if she had been transformed into Veth at that moment, I would have been excited to see what comes next. The fact that it’s still Nott makes me excited too. I’m excited to see more of Nott since she’s the best character in the M9.” He also confesses he was a bit relieved, in part because it’s delayed the inevitable. At some point she must decide if she is going to stay or go with the M9.
Cosplay of the Week: @kajicosplays on instagram of a lovely lady Percy. Brian: “Isn’t it fun when Taliesin’s characters live?”
Deep down, Nott knows she will do the transformation at some point, but at that last moment where she had to make a decision she had to check in with herself to make sure she was ready. Sam Riegel as a D&D player also knows that you have to trust your DM and make choices.
Brian misreads the word “ribbing.” Sam teaches Travis what rimming is. We all learn a lot about each other.
Sam thinks Fjord can realize when the time comes to set jokes aside. He thinks Fjord was very respectful. Travis has honestly forgotten that the conversation took place.
Travis has Dani answer from Fjord’s perspective. It’s actually pretty insightful, talking about how Fjord recognized someone hesitant to give up these newfound powers that have become intrinsically tied to self-worth.
Fjord has always been loyal, and Travis sees his protectiveness of the M9 as a logical extension of this.
Right now, he has found some agency & self-direction and is hopeful to share that sense with everyone else (he especially mentions Yasha).
Sam & Travis start quoting from Half-Baked. This is chaos.
Nott does want to stay with the M9, but she also wants to go home for sure, both of those things. The kiss with Caleb wasn’t necessarily a goodbye; it felt like the closing of a chapter. It felt like something to mark the end of the experience.
Now they’re quoting Beverly Hills Cop. Oh, boy.
“You look like you wrote Pitch Perfect.” When did this turn into a roast?
Tumblr media
Fjord has no memories earlier than the orphanage (The Driftwood Asylum). There were a couple dozen kids there aside from him; Travis thinks some of them might have been named Stone. It also operated as a small child-labor workshop for carpentry & woodshop stuff. “It was a terrible place all around.” He has no images of parents or being dropped off.
Sam thought the Nott transformation would be more endgame, though he feels it makes sense that it’s not. “While Nott transforming into Veth was my original goal, what’s great about these long games is that your goals can change two or three times before the end. Now I can explore all these other things: does she want to go back and be a housewife? How does she rectify her obligations to her husband and child to the life that she’s made with the M9? It’s so exciting and interesting.”
Brian asks a hypothetical: if she could transform back but lose all Nott’s memories, would she do it? Sam: “Oh, that’s tough. I don’t know.”
Fanart of the Week: a lovely piece by @pen_draws with everyone in the hot tub.
Travis is very trepidatious about returning to the open ocean after rejecting Uk’otoa. He wants to make sure the third temple is sealed. It feels like it would be too easy for someone not to come and try to collect the job he left half-finished. He also wants to go back to Darktow.
Sam doesn’t know if Nott is still in love with Yeza, although she definitely still loves him. He’s playing with the idea of a high school sweetheart being exposed to the world and then going back home. But Yeza’s amazing, a great guy, perfect. “I guess we’ll find out when/if she turns back into Veth.” Sam feels guilty talking about him. “He’s a fictional character and I feel guilty that he might be watching the show.”
Neither Nott nor Fjord trust Essek. Travis: “He just went from being cold and aloof to being really warm. I know there’s been time and he’s lived an isolated life, but...time will show if he’s being genuine. All of our haunches were up. All of us were on level five alert.” He’s being so helpful that Travis doesn’t trust Mercer with him.
Fjord never ever considered becoming a paladin of the Traveler. “No. Fuck no!” The Wildmother reached out and directly intervened to save him. Travis gets super creepy bad vibes from the Traveler’s relationship with Jester (Sam agrees).
Nott feels more pressure when her own problems become the focus. It’s hard for her to open up and talk about her feelings. She’d rather pick up on other people’s problems. Sam also acknowledges it’s more pressure on him (and anyone) as a player when the whole table is looking at you.
And that’s that! Is it Thursday yet?
A letter
Tumblr media
@ac-prompts
Dear mum,
Once again, I was not enough.
I am so lost and, I don't know what should I do anymore. I swear I'm doing my best mum, but somehow it never works as it should. Father has never been supportive, not for me at least. Evie is intelligent and strong she shares father's vision of the world, just as him she was interested in finding pieces of Eden. Everything she did was perfect, just like herself. On the other hand, I always had a different vision of the Brotherhood and our goal as assassins. I've never cared much about history nor artefacts, to be honest, I think that those pieces of unknown metal should be destroyed or hidden.
All I ever wanted was to help people, protect them from templars and their supporters, not only from the consequences of their mystery work. But father could never understand it. He had always been so focused on artefacts he couldn't accept any other different perspective as mine.
I still remember when I went with him and Evie on a mission. Our task was supposed to be easy to retrieve a book with the results of the experiments. Of course, father wanted Evie to do this, and my job was to get rid of security, which I did. (You should have seen me, mum!) But then I saw how a man is grabbing a woman with a little child. So, I left roof I was supposed to stay and went on to save them. That man was ready to kill both the woman and the child, can you imagine? Templars are such cowards that they are willing to kill innocent people!  I saved that woman and her child, and she was so grateful! Even her child thanked me. (I still remember his name was Dominic). I felt proud and was ready to go back to that roof, but then father and Evie had found me. He was angry at me for leaving, said I let personal feelings compromise the mission. He didn’t want to hear my reasons and Evie? She agreed with father. None of them cared about those people. From that day father was even colder and harsher towards me. I let him down and never made up for that. He died proud of Evie and still disappointed with me.
I thought that everything will be different in London. I created my own gang. (You should see it, mum! I called ourselves the rooks!). I was able to do that one thing I believed in the most – protect innocents. I was saving children from working in factories, kidnapping gang leaders of Blighters, retrieving supplies for people. Maybe I will appear soft now, but saving children, seeing their exhausted, but relieved and grateful faces made me so… proud. On that moment I just knew that that was what I wanted to do as an assassin. I wanted to be able to protect people, who were suffering the most. So I was doing that whenever I could. I was protecting innocents, supporting an orphanage in London, stopping the experiments. Even now most of my income is still for Emmanuel’s. That orphanage is important to me, there are still living children I saved from factories. I pay for their education and medical care. I just want them to have a happy childhood, you know?
At one point I met Pearl. Mum, I swear I have never seen a woman like that. She was so confident, expressive, and she believed in me. So I did everything to save London’s transport and… failed. She was a Templar, she used me and I destroyed everything. As much as I hate to say it – it was Evie who in the end saved the day... I managed to destroy the whole London transport and Evie was the one who helped rebuild it. I’m not sure if she knows that I’m going to buy it now, to make sure that every person will have access to it and workers payment will be enough for them to have a decent life.
Sometime later, Abberline asked for my help regarding the Bank of London. A particular gang was ready to rob it. They wanted to steal the money of people, who were already killing themselves while working to provide their families. They were also sponsoring templar’s experiments and stuff like that so killing them would be a good decision, right? So again I did everything, I could and killed them. How was I supposed to know that printing plates were stored in the same vault? How could I know that there were more people and someone would steal them? Abberline was there I was sure he would step in just in time but… but I guess it was my fault again, wasn’t it? I almost ruined the English economy and Evie, once again, had to fix my mistakes.
And then there was Maxwell Roth. And mum I swear I… I don’t know anymore. I was cautious around him but his plan was perfect! He surprised me every time we met, and I believed him when he was talking about freedom as the most exceptional value. He sounded like a true assassin and he trusted me! Me! After everything I did, I’m sure he had known about my endeavours with Pearl and that action in the Bank of England. Nevertheless, he trusted me, supported me, believed in me. When I was with him, I had felt like I was with father. Roth gave me more support in a few weeks than father gave me in his whole life! And then… Then he tried to sacrifice children. How could I let that to happen? I wanted to protect people, not sacrifice them! And soon I was forced to kill Roth. Can you believe that in his last moment he kissed me? I know it’s weird, we’re both men but… I just felt like my heart exploded at that moment. Never in my life, I had felt such pain. It was like someone was frantically stabbing me again and again but I couldn’t die from it. Even now thinking about it brings me so much pain. I’m so lost, mum. Why I always put my trust in the wrong people? Why am I like this? Roth, Pearl, even now, when I’m aware who they were I can’t stop thinking… what if? What if I could convince Maxwell not to kill those children? What if I was enough for him?
So far, I let down every person whoever decided to put at least a bit of faith in me.
I disappointed Evie.
I disappointed Father.
I disappointed Abberline.
I disappointed Henry.
I disappointed all people of London.
I’m writing this letter now when we have already killed Starric. We should be celebrating, you know? London is safe, Templar Grandmaster is dead. The only thing left to do is to kill remaining templars and rebuild the brotherhood. Piece of cake, right? But Evie and Henry just got engaged and they will leave London sooner or later. So what am I supposed to do now? I shouldn’t be an assassin, but if I resign Evie will have to stay, Henry will follow her, and they will both be unhappy. I may be assassin failure, worse twin, terrible brother, but I want at least Evie to be happy. She deserves it more than anyone for what she did for London.
But me? I can’t do anything right, how am I supposed to be a master assassin, when I shouldn’t be one at all? Father was right in everything he said.
I probably didn’t mention that after arriving in London I had won a train in a battle with a templar. But it doesn’t matter. I’m just so afraid, mum. Soon I will have to do everything by myself, be the man London needs. But I know, I’m just so damn sure that I will fail again! I don’t know how or who but when I think about the future, I feel shivers going down my spine. Like there is something really dark waiting for me. Yes. I will fail again and on that day, Evie will not be here to clean my mess.
I know that father said assassin should focus on present times, not looking back and not trying to predict the future and look at me now? I’m writing about the future to you, woman I had never even met. I wonder, what would you think about me? Would you hate me like a father? Be angry all the time at me like Evie? Or maybe you would be that one person I need the most, maybe you would be supportive and loving? Maybe if you were alive, everything would be different? Maybe I would be different. Better? I have no idea I just wish… you were here with me. I’m so sorry that you died because of me.
I love you, mum,
Jacob Frye
  Evie couldn’t stop her tears while reading Jacob’s letter. She had no idea about all of this, how could she be so blind? It’s been 40 years and right now she felt like she even didn’t know her own brother! She always thought he was reckless and irresponsible but he was… lonely and sad, he was blaming himself for all those bad things that had happened. She hadn’t got the slightest idea Jacob would blame himself for Cecily’s death!
Jacob… he needed support and help, yet Evie had never provided him with any of it.
The woman sat on the chair, hiding face in her hand for a few seconds. This time it was her who felt disappointed. Disappointed in herself. Jacob was the only family she had left. The only one who had always been there for her and with her. Even if they were fighting and arguing, Jacob have always been there. And that letter proved that. Jacob was so afraid of staying alone, but never said a word, so Evie could be happy far away from London.
She wiped tears from her cheeks before she looked at the letter again. It was hidden with the picture they took in India and a few other documents. But among it all, there was another little piece of paper with only a few words written down.
“I knew I would do it again. This time I failed Jack”
