Shocking! Finally discussing something that isn’t Doraemon related...

I’ve been on a Steven Universe rewatch and have made it at least half way through season 2, yet to get to the Peridot arc. However ‘Sadie’s Song’ was among the last few I watched. and it led me to want to discuss something I’ve never publicly spoken about. Discuss or well, complain actually.

I’m still bothered by the lack of consequences she receives from what happened in 'Island Adventure.’ Lars still hangs out with her, cares about her and while their relationship has changed there’s no real resolution to what she did to him? I understand, of course, Lars is a jerk. Yet he’s a jerk in a sense of being an insecure teenage boy, not so much a genuine asshole kind of way. Still, in the end I don’t think it’s fair to excuse her actions just because he can be unfair.

Sadie in the episode actually reminds me of the dynamic with her mother that’s introduced in Sadie’s Song, being controlling and thinking you are doing what’s best for someone even when it’s suffocating. Don’t get me wrong, I actually love a complex angle at love like this- my issue lies in the fact it isn’t treated as big of a deal as it is. If we can have a six episode arc about Pearl having betrayed Garnet’s trust with fusion, why couldn’t Lars have drifted away from Sadie for her betrayal against him?

Sadie, while her intentions were initially good, were still wrong. It’s acknowledged, but when Lars states he feels Sadie did this to come on to him- thus her bad actions are thrown out the window, is where the problem lies. From his perspective what else would it look like? Even if she didn’t intend for it in the first place, what if the monster hadn’t attacked? When would she have fessed up? When do your good actions become rotten depending on how long you wait to confess? How long would she have taken advantage of his vulnerability to have what she wanted?

We won’t ever know, but as it goes in the episode- Lars does kiss her first but she created a situation where he was desperate, sad and above all- lonely. She consents to the kiss, and doesn’t have a moment where she thinks otherwise due to the dishonesty of it all. Even as he pulls away and tries to move on, she tries to get him to come back. Sadie doesn’t plan to tell him then and there until she’s forced to.

If Lars crying and telling her he misses home and is feeling bad before the kiss didn’t do the trick, what would’ve? In a non-desperate life or death situation at least...

So honestly, his statement of her coming onto him isn’t really false- it’s treated that way by Sadie and the fandom. I can hardly consider it a sign of him being a jerk because his trust was just betrayed, I think he’s earned the right to be a bit mad about that. It’s not too different from what happened with Pearl and Garnet, at least, it’s similar enough. So I don’t quite get why it wasn’t handled with the same sort of levity...

I may be more miffed about this due to the fandom, years of dealing with it and the absolute hatred people had for Lars or any character of color has kind of made me resentful of that episode and Sadie to an extent. She’s fine, looking back on it, still hard to shake those feelings.

Dumbest part of criticism of SU Future is when people say "Future is character assassination of Steven" and "The show trivializes/poorly represents mental illness" in the same breath. If you think a character whom has suffered immense interpersonal and physical trauma having breakdowns and snapping at people because of being triggered is mutually exclusive to a character being kind and empathetic, I don't think you have a right to speak on mental illness rep.

Seeing a character who is defined by kindness and compassion crack under that pressure of being there for everyone like that is crazy to see in a kids show. Personally I hadn't felt that seen by anything in a while, and it's just offensive as hell to me to say that a character acting traumatized in a way that isn't sad puppy dog eyes means they're mischaracterized or abusive now. That's half the point of Future that Steven didn't know how to express his problems within his role as precious angel.

He wasn't mischaracterized, he was recontextualized. It's like people can accept "this mean character was once nice but changed cause trauma", or "sweet character is now depressed cause trauma", but the reality that someone youre familiar with can change dramatically due to trauma - acting angry and abrasive instead of sad and demure - is blasphemous somehow.

Double points if they then say the gems or Greg were dumbed down to make Steven look better. Like, My Brother In Christ, they are exhibiting the exact lack of awareness you are thinking it's impossible for a person like Steven to have angry or vengeful trauma reactions.

Okay so, we all know that fWhip and the group have a new series starting soon, yeah?

Recently, fWhip put out a short where he built a stone obelisk of sorts, with some glowing letters carved into it

Assuming I’m reading it right, it says “SOS” in galactic. In the short, he says that that it’s “not ominous, or foreshadowing anything at all!”

So, it definitely is.

We also know that Pixlriffs mentioned starting a new multiplayer series: “I’m also about to start a new multiplayer project, which should be beginning this weekend.” [Survival Guide S3 E.87 (0:23)]

Apart from these two, I’ve also seen that both Oli and Sausage have alluded to new skins in some way

The skins seem very casual to me? I also noticed that Sausage’s skin is lacking the shoulder pad and fallout wristband that he usually wears, which is interesting. (Perhaps related to fWhip mentioning that he’s not allowing multidimensional lore, but still worth noting regardless.) To me, it’s giving like, normal people somehow stranded in a fantasy world vibes. We also know that fWhip commissioned a special mod for this series, so perhaps it’s something to do with that?

So! It seems like the new series is starting this weekend (Feb 24-25), if Pix is correct. It’s also worth mentioning once again that this is NOT empires season three, as fWhip has repeatedly emphasized that a season three will not be happening this year.

i don't doubt that there is some timeline were she would go to an extreme like this for Rose's affection despite maybe having some trauma from shapeshifting, considering she's gone to extremes before to get validation or comfort from others. i see why it was scrapped (replaced with amethyst shapeshifting event?) since this is even more messed up than amethyst's 'rose' shapeshifting and probably would have made people hate on pearl too much, but still a very interesting thought though
