Batboys current ages:

Dick 27-29: His first phone may well have been the first iPhone. He also would have had most of the models of iPod. In his very early teen years people still used digital cameras. He would have been very active on Facebook and probably played facebook games with his friends (does anyone remember that gardening game on facebook?). He also would have played online games (www.friv.com would have been constantly typed into the browser). He also would have begged Bruce for an Nintendo Wii, really emphasizing all the sport games you can play on it (like we all did with our parents - mine didn't fall for it). Also always had the newest Game boy and played a lot of Mario Brothers. He also would have gotten a Playstation Protable.

Jason 19-21: He may well have gone through a minecraft phase when he was 11-13. He also would have had an early iPad growing up (those early ones were HEAVY) and probably used it to play that tombraider game (the one where you run and collect coins and it steadily speeds up while you dodge obstacles) and subway surfers. He has facebook and used it a little when he was younger but doesn't use it all now. He played with Dick's old Gameboys growing up but also had the newest Playstation Portable models.

Tim eternally 17: Definitely has a Nintendo Switch and got super into Animal Crossing (at least briefly). He also had to have an iPad for school. Fashion-wise he wouldn't be caught dead in skinny jeans. He doesn't have Facebook. He nearly fell for a lot of the TikTok conspiracies and if it hadn't been for his fact-checking nature combined with his access to the Bat-computer resources he would have fallen for at least one of them. He has a mac laptop and an eleborate gaming pc set-up at home.

Duke 15-16: Not so different to Tim but he is a little obsessed with Dick's/jason's collection of old Gameboys and Playstation Portables. They let Duke have them. Duke and Tim also mess around with Dick's old digital cameras (Tim is immediately disappointment by the quality - those digital point and shoots were not great - and looses interest. But Duke thinks they're fun)

Damian 11-13: Has his iPad and phone within spitting distance at all times (excluding missions and patrol obs). He uses his iPad to draw. He has all the newest electronics (mainly because everyone else at his fancy school has it all and he see's it as a status symbol, refusing to be thought of as lesser).

(I haven't included Playsation models in this because I'm not familiar and my light googling wasn't helpful enough. But they all would have had the newest Playstations corresponding to their ages).

Played all the final fantasy games. Including spin offs and cross overs.

Has discord kittens.

Chat went crazy one time because it was summertime and he tore off his shirt because he went sicko mode after he died because of a baby zombie.

Argues with Amphitrite because he doesn’t know how to fix his wifi in his goofy ass castle so Amphitrite does it for him. ( she makes it worse to piss him off)

He cried after he couldn’t find the legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom. He went to 4 different shops everyday and it was all sold out ( happend to me) ( also Amphitrite pre-ordered it for him)

Surprisingly doesn’t buy a lot of merch. He only has a shelf with his games on it with maybe some limited editions.

He one time acted like he was filming zeus in a meeting but he was just playing subway surfers.

The whole Unity drama can really only be described as 'How to completely fuck yourself and everyone else over' but in a actually comedic how stupid this was kind of way.

Like let me explain.

Warning long post but for a good reason.

Unity practically runs (or soon to be ran) the mobile gaming spare. There's a reason for this as Unreal's mobile port kinda sucks(it's gotten somewhat better recently) and alternatives like Flash are dead.

So mobile games like

All Mihoyo/Hoyoverse games so far (Genshin Impact, Honkai Impact and Honkai Star Rail, Tears of Themis)

Disney's Twisted Wonderland

Yu GI Oh master duel

Marvel Clash

Pokemon Go

Among Us

Fate: Grand Order

Ensemble stars/Ensemble stars music

Obey Me/ Obey Me Nightbringer

Path to Nowhere

Arknights

Dislyte

Temple Run/Temple Run 2

Subway Surfers

And many many more will be affected by this change. In fact, it might just be easier to list the popular mobile games that don't use Unity.

Now from a purely capitalist point of view(and ignore common sense), every game I just listed there is a potential million dollars or more. A literal infinite money generator especially gacha games that thrive off of a install and uninstall loop.

But, there's no way they could actually enforce any of this.

Mihoyo/Hoyoverse and most Chinese gachas use a version of Unity that's only available in China and is basically it's own thing. Meaning that it's unlikely that the changes are actually going to affect them. But they did say the changes apply to 'emerging markets' so don't hold your breath.

Games like Twisted Wonderland, Fate: Grand Order, Pokemon Go etc. are licensed games aka they'll be messing with the likes of The Pokemon Company, Komani and Disney. Who would probably take them to court or shut down if it was barely profitable enough before than have less profit.

Game companies(mostly female focused ones) like Happy Elements(Ensemble stars) and Solmare(Obey Me) actually make more money from merch and irl events than the actual games.

Which leaves the rest. Who may not be able to get by. Like the creators of Among Us who would likely go bankrupt if this change were to happen. Or older games like Temple Run, Angry Birds and Subway Surfers who no longer make that sort of revanue anymore.

The problem is 'the rest' is basically 90% of the users of Unity on mobile and a giant chunk of the mobile gaming market.

So instead of an infinite money generator, most devs are going to shut down and either remake on a different engine or shut down completely.

The minority that can pay either might not have to (Chinese gachas) or are unlikely to/litigation bait.

So not only did Unity shoot themselves in the head but they somehow managed to put the billion dollar mobile gaming market in jeopardy.

And this is just mobile gaming, this doesn't include PC, Xbox, PS4 games. Unity is pretty easy to learn and was cheaper than Unreal for a beginner/ Indie dev so they basically dominated that market as well.

And the same problem persists there as well. Those who could afford it aren't going to pay and the majority of users can't actually pay the fee and are going to delist or switch. So the entire market ends up in jeopardy because it's at risk of losing a giant chunk of it.

All for an infinite money generator that anyone with a brain or at the very least had a basic understanding of the gaming market could see wasn't going to work.

The shortsightedness to even think this was going to work is astounding. The stupidity is astronomical.

i am pretty sure that my first pc games were restaurant & zoo empire (and also ts2) and i still am a zoo games bitch to this day. i play a lot of indie games these days bc theres a lot of gems but also i currently only have my laptop and it cant handle the big beefy games. also money kdjfhskdf (i do also enjoy playing games on the switch but. optimization usually sucks and sales are so bad. so i just mourn the handheld experience. mobile games i dont rly play at this point but i did have a big obsession w subway surfer)

generally genre wise im attracted to puzzle/mystery games, visual novels, sim games (esp crafting/farming/walking sims) but my start was in rpgs and i would like to pick that back up! also want to get more into deckbuilding games! this year ive played a bunch but my faves so far have been my time at sandrock and botany manor! and currently im playing stardew valley once again

all time faves that fall in these categories are definitely carto, the sexy brutale, eastshade, skyrim, strange horticulture, wytchwood and book of travels. but i also rly love the pokemon series and acnh and i have a big attachment to da:i and the mass effect trilogy since they were what RLY got me into gaming besides the sims! and i honestly would love to play more similar games in a fantasy or sci-fi setting but currently theres not rly anything on my list. (though i do have a bunch of fantasy/sci-fi games coming up just not w combat and exploration mechanics and i do miss that)

as for characters, some games rly inspire me to create someone new (also why i miss me/da tbh) like skyrim or book of travels or even pokemon (some of my pokemon ocs got so fleshed out i love it) but i am also prone to reusing some faves like ficus/felix elderberry, charlotte miracle and abbie lavellan kjfhkasjfkhasf also shoutout to gideon hawke & chikelu ryder who never saw the light of day originally but then became HUGE in choices kasjfhkjasf

The Jonicles - Entry 24

It is currently the 20th of August, 2022 on a Sunday at 11:43 am. I am currently blasting a sped up edit of Smile HD through my headphones in a fit of insanity because gosh darn, this slaps. It's also Day #93 of my Jon Arbuckle hyperfixation.

As a lifelong gamer, I can easily declare that video games are an important part of my day-to-day life. I play them, I fixate on them, and I love them for what they are. I play games on all sorts of systems. Handhelds, consoles, PC, Hell, I'll even have a crack at a Tiger Electronic "game" just because I find the little things to unimagineably stupid. However, there is one avenue I often avoid when it comes to gaming, and that is mobile games. I don't have anything against the genre apart from money-laundering bore-fests that have microtransactions scattered around every nook and cranny of the screen. I have just never been interested in mobile games. When mobile games were at their peak in the early 2010s, I only distinctly remember playing one of them as a kid, that one being Angry Birds. I've never played anything like Subway Surfers, Cut The Rope or even something more recent like Pokemon GO. I did play Plants Vs. Zombies, but that was on PC...

That sentiment changes today, however, as I have discovered two interesting little mobile games, both being Garfield-themed, one of which you can't play anymore. Ladies, gents and folks of all identities alike, I want to talk about the games Garfield Rush and Garfield GO respectively and my perspective on them, because by God, it's Day #93, and Garfield is slowly taking over more an more of my mannerisms each day that goes by. Jon help me.

Garfield Rush is a mobile game released on the 6th of November, 2018 by a developer known as Ivy, who has made other stunning gems such as "Cat Runner: Decorate Home", "Subway Princess Runner" and "Street Rush - Running Game" along with two other Tetris reskins that look literally exactly the same as each other. Riveting. Honestly, I'm surprised that they even have an officially liscensed Garfield game considering they have like three other Subway Surfers ripoffs, but hey, life is crazy, man.

Oh, speaking of Subway Surfers, you know how I mentioned two paragraphs ago that I have never played Subway Surfers? Well, consider me redeemed of (most of) my sins, because Garfield Rush is literally just Subway Surfers, and I have no fucking idea why. Listen, when I discovered Garfield Kart for the first time, I was absolutely bamboozled, and I think I lost about 20 sanity. Garfield, at least the Garfield I know, has always been something simple, just a comic about a man and his cat living life, so you'd have to imagine that 11 year old me finding out about Garfield Kart must have broken me. It was a mix of hilarity and confusion. Why, out of all the franchises, did they make a Garfield kart racer game!? It just didn't make sense. So, when I discovered that Garfield Rush is a thing that exists in the real world and that I can't do anything about it, I was immediately hooked. I had to play it... And play it I did.

I have played this game for way too fucking long. I have played it for two hours too long. And you know what? It was decent, good even. In the paraphrased words of Jon Arbuckle himself, "Today I played Garfield Rush... And I... *Sniff* enjoyed it!". I have never played a game of Subway Surfers in my life, but with the introduction of Garfield into the mix, I can safely say that this is my favourite Subway Surfers game ever. It was surprisingly good. But it feels so... wrong to see Garfield there.

You see, over the years, Garfield has expanded from just a small comic strip named 'Jon' in the Pendleton Times local newspaper to a multi-million dollar phenomenon. Garfield has gone from just a fat cat who loves food and lazing around into a bizzare shapeshifting charicature. And I mean that literally. If you put Garfield in a karting game 40 years ago, they'd not only be astonished at the technology at hand, but I don't think it would work. 40 years ago, Garfield just wasn't the thing he is today. It would be really weird. But now it works... Well, it doesn't, but it works enough. What I mean is that Garfield has become so well-known and so malleable that you could literally put him in anything, be it a kart racer or a bizarre mobile game clone. You can even literally fucking shift him into an oddly terrifying couch and it would work. It would still work. And that is both a hilarious and sad thing.

If me actually enjoying this Subway Surfers clone isn't sad enough, I find Garfield malleability to be sad in the way that I just shake my head and say "Look at how they've massacred my boy". Garfield was never supposed to have this much power, he was just a house cat living life and thinking up witty phrases to himself, he was just a little baby cat, but now, he's something close to a God. Garfield is immortal, Garfield is eternal, Garfield is forever, and I don't know if I like that or not. On one hand, I'm happy that future generations will be exposed to the loveliness of Jon and his two loveable little boys, but on the other, I'm terrified of what Garfield has become and will become. He's like a piece of clay except that clay is fat and orange and has two almost seductive looking egg-shaped eyes that always pretrude out of whatever he is made into, and I have to ask the question: Have we gone too far..? Have we gone too far that I can easily play a Garfield Subway Surfers clone and enjoy it? Not think it's too weird? That it just exists? I think so, but in saying that, despite all the repetitive craziness Garfield has transformed into, at least it spawned these hilarious spelling mistakes in its game images and description.

"Run With The Garfield" THE Garfield himself. Not that Garfield, not this Garfield, THE Garfield. And then there's "Challenge Funny Level" which sounds like something straight out of a Chinese bootleg toy. But then there's my absolute favourite, which is "Explore Stunning Mine Hole". If you're anything like me, I think it's pretty obvious as to why that one's really funny.

And it gets better, the first line of the description goes as follows: "Garfield Rush is an endless running mobile game where the Player [sic] is Garfield, Odie or Nemo.". NEMO. Just so you know, that is supposed to be Nermal, but for a reason that I can assume is probably just a mistranslation, he is now Nemo. Kinda makes me wish his name was actually Nemo in game. If you start seeing any cursed Nermal fish art on my blog, you'll know why. god this is like turnip jon all over again

Oh yeah! And speaking of Jon, you unfortunately can't play as him, whivh really sucks, as I'd love to watch my funny little cartoonist man leap over trains and cars like the madman he is. Same with Arlene too, who is on the title screen flying a plane, but isn't actually in the game, weirdly enough... I get that they aren't as marketable, but still! It would be awesome if I could play as them...

Now, you may be thinking "How could you make yourself a slave to the mobile gaming industry!! You betrayed us!! Fake gamer!!!!!", please take solice in the fact that first of all, I haven't spent a cent on Garfield Rush and that second of all, the next game I'm going to talk about isn't even playable anymore.

Yup, we've got a case of unplayable media on our hands. Garfield Go was an augmented reality game published by Freeze Tag, and according to IGN, this beast was unleashed on the world on the 13th of June, 2017. Despite what I just said earlier about the thing that Garfield is so malleable that you can take him and put him in anything and it would work, that apparently didn't ring true for this game, this weird, clunky looking Pokemon Go ripoff. And there's not a lot of info about it either...

From what little screenshots I can dig up, the game was... Literally just Pokemon Go but shittier and Garfield is there. Right off the bat, Garfield appears from the void and into the apace of wherever you happen to be playing this and tells you to "Fuck the food into the bowl to feed me!" which is...

Wait, I'm getting a message, hold on... Okay, so I've just been informed that no, Garfield is in fact not telling you to "fuck the food" into the bowl, but instead to flick the food into the bowl to feed him. The L and I in flick were just too close to each other that my brain mashed them together, I suppose. Anyway, one interesting thing I should note is that the icon that appears when you flick the food has a familiar light blue shirt sleeve which to me, indicates that you do, in fact, canonically play as Jon in this game, so if Garfield Go has anything going for it, it's that at least you're playing as the best boy, which is always wonderful.

In terms of gameplay, it's... really not interesting at all. You just fuck-- sorry, flick food into Garfield's bowl and he'll eat it, you can walk around for a bit and find bits of comic strips and give him a hat, it's really not that interesting. There's this article on Vice by someone who documented their experience playing this game for a day, and they didn't have the best time doing so. They detailed the fact that the "Bistros" (basically Pokemon Gyms) were located at weird places, one of them literally having a sign labled "Danger - Hard Hat Area". Damn, Garf out here trynna kill people. Anyway, you literally just take this fat ass cat around just to give him food, maybe purchase a few microtransactions (why would you though), and that's it.

What I find funny though is that there's a bit of a joke to be had about the implication that you play as Jon, and all you do is just move Garf around to give him shit like pizza and lasagna. The perfect meta commentary on the struggles of one Jon Arbuckle in his daily life caring for Garf, he seriously deserves more recognition for having to keep Garfield under control for over 40 years, poor guy... It's a real shame I never got to play this before it dipped, because even though it looks and is terrible, at the end of the day, I'm a Garfield fan, and I have an interest in everything relating to this funky little cat and his funky not-so-little owner. I suspect this game was removed either because it predictably never made much money or the liscensing for it eventually dropped and they had to remove it. Welp... at least we have a case of lost media to find!

Anyways, less serious entry today. Just wanted to talk about some funny Garfield games that I found interesting. If you don't mind, I'm now going to proceed to play Garfield Rush for another three hours because I'm slowly losing control of my life. Take care everyone :)

ah, and riot’s vanguard is officially out.

well! i won’t say i’m not extremely sad… league has been my first “real” game i’ve ever played, from early february, 2017. it’s been with me through thick and thin, it helped me disassociate from many situations, no matter how long i took a break from it i always came back, like a toxic ex. i met so many people through it, good and bad, made so many memories, learned so many things...

i’m sad to see it go </3 but i’m glad i joined league during its golden era, even though it was technically ending at the time. i look back on those years now and see just how drastically both league, riot and the community themselves have changed, and sadly, imo, it’s not for the better.

starting with the game, i don’t like the items overhaul. i’m sick and tired of every season babying bruisers, tanks and assassins. “but mages can hit me from far away!!” mages miss one skill and they’re dead. you miss your entire combo but you aa 4 times so you win. don’t know what majority of the new monsters do anymore, didn’t really pay attention. i pivoted to arams a lot more and kind of abandoned summoner’s rift altogether. i liked the durability update! but then riot kind of went back on that. i adored syndra’s ability haste build. now it’s gone forever… mage items just overall suck, they always sucked, but rn they suck suck. my love syndra’s still okay, but she’s just flawless like that. they ruined seraphine, i don’t wanna max her e, like what?? love my renata and soraka, but i don’t play support anymore. rakan is iconic and i love him <3 and i will never forgive riot for sidelining him ALWAYS in favour of xayah’s bird feet. even in their story she’s set up as the protagonist while he’s there to be an accessory to her cause. oh, my phoenix boy… the skins feel plastic-y, there’s rarely any passion for telling a story, events are just skin carousels with cute descriptions and a few missions. they themselves don’t know the lore considering we’ve been on the “will they won’t they” escapade about arcane being canon, and let’s not even TALK about the monstrosity that was sentinels of light...

now riot turned reaaaally ugly. and i’ll sound like a broken record with the sheer amount of times i’ve said this, but fall of league has started ever since they revealed the prestiges in 2019. everything after that has just been downhill, from battle passes getting worse and worse (“you’re not supposed to get everything you paid for :)!”), broken promises (“xayah & rakan are our lovebirds and will have shared skins & recall animation <3” -> “who said that? i literally never said that”), $200 recolours of skins (“SEE?? I ADDED YELLOW!!”), blasphemous tft prices (no, seriously riot, get that shit out of the league client it’s literal subway surfers for league players), to adding of vanguard that literally exploded people’s pcs (this shit was sussy ever since valorant came out but valo community was too busy meowing on mic with cat ears headphones for a gun skin bundle to realise what the fuck they were installing on their machines) and so on… a literal trash dumpster fire.

the community… well, the community didn’t change much, it was always toxic to begin with, but with the addition of valorant space overlapping in riot’s department of games + overall social media influence now you also get a wave of attention seeking, genuinely mentally unwell people that will actually gang up and ruin people’s days over a pixelated video game. i do hear that riot started finally more proactively punishing players like this though! good for them...

but yeahhh look, i understand how anti cheat systems work, but vanguard is just so badly done it clogs your machine like a diarrhea that its “protection” isn’t even worth. so while at first i felt just hollow leaving, remembering all of the stuff i realise i’m better off! maybe in the future things change, but for now i’m okay. ALSO MORE SPACE FOR ENDFIELD YIPPEEE
