BTS as the Elements from Avatar: The Last Airbender
Since Avatar: The Last Air Bender is once again in the public view (but to be honest, it truly never left), here's my own personal (and unsolicited) opinion as to what elements I think the BTS members would be! This list is kinda based on the philosophies talked about in the animated show + characterization I have recognized.
Namjoon: Air. I feel like it would be easy to put him in the Earthbender category due to his ties to all things nature -- but I feel like Namjoon's resilence, compassion, and mediating approach really suits the air element. Many people in the industry have complimented Namjoon's role as a leader and have said that he's kept these boys together like glue. He's made it a main goal to always be vulnerable and to always be honest, and I think these concepts reflect heavily in a lot of his own personal work. He views the world the way a child would from the arms of their parents -- sometimes through sparks of joy or through tremors of fear. I think with his maturity and self-sacrifice, he has been able to achieve so many things. Of course, he can be less than graceful at times, a bit chaotic and rough around the edges -- but overall, I think this element suits him very well.
Seokjin: Earth. He was pretty difficult for me to place, but often times I think of Jin as this sturdy pillar for the rest of the group to lean on. Often times, he's straightforward and honest about his feelings, endearingly stubborn but willing to sacrifice his own comfort if it means uplifting people he loves. He often provides support for the other members and promotes an atmosphere of confidence, often expressing how mistakes are meant to be made and learned from ("What if he flings it?" "Then he flings it."). There's been many instances where he'll take the first 'blow' in a social setting to make everyone comfortable, often seeming as if he's acting just to break the ice -- but in actuality, everything is incredibly calculated on his end. I personally find that trait of his to be very admirable. Also, a lot of the characters that we meet in the show that are Earthbenders tend to have this type of witty humor that Seokjin falls right into.
Yoongi: Fire. Yoongi's passion is seriously unmatched; his constant hunger for achieving his dreams really became an obsession for him, and a lot of the characters in the show who are Firebenders tend to rely on this emotional spark and/or connection to a particular passion to fuel their flames in combat. Yoongi also is someone who openly discusses the dangerous of being 'burned' or 'scorched' by one's own greed or obsession. Yoongi also is someone who is attentive when it comes to the needs of other people in his life. He performs gestures that make people feel seen in intimate ways, even if he isn't as explicit in going about them as other people might be. He often comes in quietly and then burns brightest at the right times! Like gasoline swallowing a flame, his formal expressions of love, when verbalized, always leave a searing impact on whoever he is speaking to. The other members often beg to hear him say those three little words -- or one word, given that it's in Korean. Two? One. Well, there's 사랑 and then there's 하다, but when it's written it's like--
Anyways, I think that type of warmth really caters to this category well.
Hoseok: Water! Everything about him just speaks Water bender. Usually in combat, Water benders have to adapt to change or be imaginative with how they use the element, so I feel like his endless creativity and switch-ups with his personal style really reflects this. Not to mention, they are known to be great healers; Hoseok has been referred to as an emotional cornerstone by many members of the group. I always love seeing how the other members interact with him, and you can tell that he means so much to each and every one of them. He's reliable, adapts to change on the spot, and is willing to put his best foot forward at any given opportunity.
Jimin: Controversial Opinion™ but he's definitely a Firebender to me! I know a lot of people usually stick him in the waterbending category, but I tend to stick him in the same 'obsession' box with Yoongi. He's been known to be a hard worker, almost to the personal detriment of himself. He's incredibly passionate and blunt, he knows what he wants and constantly tells himself that he's going to get it. I think he's perfect for the role. Although he is passionate towards his career, he's also incredibly passionate towards the relationships he has in his life. Jimin never goes half way; he puts his all into others and lets them know that they are loved and respected. He's been one to admit jealously, to being a person who doesn't like to share friends, and he has admitted to blatantly cutting anyone out who doesn't have kind words to say about his group. Jimin, much like a flame, is warm and kindles a type of spirit that others can seek comfort in during their coldest hours.
Taehyung: Like Jin, I feel like he's also pretty hard to place. Taehyung -- to me -- is an individual who is very versatile, and we have seen him wear many faces throughout his career. At some points, he can be quite reserved and scarily observant, his take on the world incredibly unique and tinted with something whimsical. But whenever he's in a comfortable environment, he's a silly social butterfly who can't help but spread his wings. Taehyung also has a way of getting people to be vulnerable with him, often showing sides to themselves that they wouldn't show otherwise. He loves endlessly and gives as much as he takes, having a unique charm that even the 'iciest' of people cannot help but melt for. Like Seokjin, he's also pretty stubborn in the best way. So for him, I really had trouble deciding, but I feel like he could fit well into the Avatar category, or even Water since he adapts very well to any environment.
Jungkook: Jungkook, like Taehyung, has undergone many changes throughout his entire career. From a shy teenager to a confident young man, he is someone who has taken many of the qualities I have listed above and made them everything and more. We all know that he's incredibly talented, making it a goal to be the best at everything that he sets out to do (not like he needs to try very hard, he's quite the natural at any given skill). I think Jungkook still has an air of shyness to himself, but much like Yoongi and Jimin, he is a desperate go-getter and works until he can't anymore. He's incredibly emotionally intelligent and speaks his mind quite freely, often smashing any barrier between himself and others so he can express himself in the clearest way possible. He's always been described to be exceedingly kind by both his members and those who have worked with them, he's imaginative (almost to the point of being lost in his own little world), he's attentive and caring, he's humorous, and he's not afraid to be openly vulnerable. I think, like Taehyung, he could fit into the Avatar category, but if not, I'd place him in Fire alongside Jimin and Yoongi.
I didn't really plan for this post to be a character study on the members of BTS but I guess that's what happens. Let me know what you think.
