Added an addendum to the “The Magic Trick You Didn’t See" google document; just to save you time from having to go open up the whole document again, I’ll put the addition under the cut here as well:
Addendum:
Goddammit I knew I should have looked up the Shostakovich symphony. Thank you to the person who emailed me to tell me to look it up.
From Wikipedia:
“The Symphony quotes Shostakovich's song Vozrozhdenije (Op. 46 No. 1, composed in 1936–37), most notably in the last movement; the song is a setting of a poem by Alexander Pushkin (find text and a translation here) that deals with the matter of rebirth. This song is by some considered to be a vital clue to the interpretation and understanding of the whole symphony.”
The poem by Pushkin:
An artist-barbarian with his lazy brush Blackens the painting of a genius And senselessly he covers it with His own illegitimate drawing.
But with the passing years, the alien colours Fall off like threadbare scales; The creation of the genius emerges before us in its former beauty
Thus vanish the illusions From my tormented soul And in it appear visions Of original and innocent times.
(Translation from Russian by Tom Kennedy)
WELP........ don’t know what to do with that. ok.

This Fandom is so disappointing and immature in how it's handled The Shin Theory.
This is how we react to a Theory about a fictional 2D character who has been dead since before the beginning of the manga?
Really?
I'm convinced that most people didn't even read the full post because I'm seeing so many 'debunking' and 'proving wrong' posts that directly reference things that were already talked about in the Original Post.
And ironically, the people saying the the original post was harmful are the ones doing the most harm.
The Author posted a Theory about a fictional character being an abuser, and the Fandom is defending this character in the exact way people defend actual abusers. You don't think that's harmful?
"But he was so nice."
"Everyone loved him."
"Everyone's always talking about how great he was."
"There were no signs."
"Why didn't the kids say anything? "
This is disgusting. It's not even about Shinichiro anymore, it's about people saying such damaging things to actual victims in defense of a FICTIONAL CHARACTER.
And lastly, how can anyone honestly say that Tokyo Revengers is a Light Hearted manga? It's literally about very damaged kids killing each other! Abuse is EVERYWHERE in this story.
The very first gang related issue we were introduced to was the rape of a child!
Taiju brutally abused his siblings!
Draken was offered hanjobs etc by grown women at the age of ten!
Kazutora's dad beat him!
Souths 'dad' made him murder some at age 5!
This shit has never been Light Hearted! You see a little comedy and decide its for kids?
GUYS. NO.
This has gone far beyond whether or not you believe the Theory. It's about the absolute bullshit way people are discussing it or disregarding it because they don't have the capacity to think more deeply than, 'but he's so nice'.
Some people need to put this manga down and come back in a few years when they've gained enough perspective and life experience to properly appreciate it on a deeper level.
And I swear to God, if somehow we find out that Shinichiro wasn't the absolute angel he has been portrayed as, these same people will scream about Wakui ruining the story or being a bad writer because he's dared to not meet your expectations about, I say it again, a goddamn fictional character.
The immaturity is appalling.
Some of you people claiming to be adults are either lying about your age in your bios or just really been to re-evaluate your thinking.
It's possible to think The Theory is wrong without disrespecting real life victims and experiences that reflect it.

Listen I love the fact that Alys Rivers “sees much and more” and is in a relationship with an one-eyed prince ok? That just seems like convergent, interlocking fairytale shit to me.
Ps. No I do not ship them but I like the idea of them, of this.

Broke: Giovanni is Ash's father
Woke: Giovanni has mistakenly believed Ash was his hookup mistake for like a decade and is about to get the surprise of the century seeing that not only are they not related, but the employee he fired a few years ago for being too stupid is now living with him and being a more active father than he was

So while rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender recently, I noticed a trend
A number of spirits we see have an animal form, specifically animals we recognize as "normal" for us. For example:
- Wan Shi Tong is an owl and his knowledge seekers are foxes
- Tui and La are koi fish
- Hei Bai is a panda
-The guardian of the mother of faces is a wolf (The Search)
Heck there's even the talking Baboon spirit and the monkey missing its face that we see in the Spirit World at the end of Season 1.
Basically every time we've seen a "normal" animal, they've been a spirit.
My point? I argue that Bosco is a spirit bear that's chilling and living the good life in the mortal world just because he can.

Hot Take:
If someone puts up a clear TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️ above their post, and you, knowing it's a TRIGGER for you, go on ahead and read it, and then end up getting TRIGGERED....
That is completely on you.
You could have kept scrolling. You were asked to keep scrolling. You were very clearly warned. And you still read it and now you're mad because you got TRIGGERED.
It's not your fault that *insert topic here* is a Trigger for you.
But if you're warned about *insert topic here* and then go read about *insert topic here*...
Do not attack someone for 'triggering you' when you were TOLD, and ignored the warnings.
There was a time when Hot Takes were known as 'Common Sense'.
I don't know what happened.

after reflection i am not a believer in The Theory doc
discussion under cut
-"neil gaiman's such a good writer it's impossible for him to do anything wrong ever, i am going to continually reference this fact and base the entire theory premise on this"
wrong. yeah the man is talented. but absolutely yes he has the potential to write something not stunning, AS DO WE ALL, being, you know, humans.
-it is so tjlc that it makes me nervous large swathes of fandom seem to be believing in it. lads. lads please
-not a fan of the tone of it personally, although this is an issue irrelevant to the points inside it
-several "plot holes" or weird things pointed out in the intro are just... not plot holes. like aziraphale drawing. or the gabe statue payoff.
-"maggie does some weird things therefore she isn't real. look at these coffeeshop au lesbians! haha they're such a plot device that i'm going to say one of them is Made Up, just because of how strange and unusual i think they are"
i think "something's up with maggie" is an interesting theory. "she's entirely fictional" is inane. also i have words for people ignoring maggie+nina/discounting them as "tropes" or "lesbians to help the gay men get along" like actually they had their own story... yes they were plot devices but they were self aware plot devices same as some characters from s1
-the avoidance of alcohol is interesting, but could have many explanations.
i think my biggest reason for being suspicious of this is that good omens season 2 is a continuation of good omens 1, and good omens the book, and it is between season 1 and the season 2 that pratchett and gaiman planned out. if the neighbor of the beast was supposed to start with metatron going "aha! i have trapped you all in my secret time manipulation scheme, there is no escape!! muahahahaha" then i think the guy would have showed up in s2 more than just in the last episode, for the most part.
also, this hinges so heavily on what i call "bad on purpose" that it's kind of headache-inducing. one: from what i've seen of gaiman, he doesn't do that kind of thing. what an insane gamble to throw away potential ratings/s3 for a mind game that the doc author seems to think the vast majority of people simply wouldn't be able to comprehend/figure out for themselves, from the way they wrote the doc. two: sometimes things are just mediocre
but i have a specific vendetta towards bad "on purpose" or "the villain is good actually" or "the authors have this massive secret that you plebs don't get kind" of theory (i understand that these are not exactly similar and also, this is showing my inherent bias against the essay, but i feel it's better to acknowledge that bias). theories that go "actually it's completely different" feel, i need, either a load of solid evidence or a vibe where it's like "this is just a theory though, we're having fun!" i'm not super with tone but i don't think the theory has either.
i think theorizing is good and fun and a creative way to engage with fandom. i'm not a fan of this one. and now, after old man porch-ing about how you gotta take time before posting essays in the tags, i will post this essay i wrote in 30 mins with minimal revising. hit post goodbye

So there's this Flat Earther who said he was traveling to the Ice Wall last September to prove the Earth was flat. He has not posted since.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are some theories on his current whereabouts:
He fell off
Too busy partying on the continent of Geminia to post anymore
He discovered a second, bigger ice wall
He died alone in the frigid wastes of Antarctica, aware at last of his folly as he slowly, painfully expired, his body never again to be seen by human eyes
Here be dragons (they ate him)

look, I know I've talked about this essay (?) before but like,
If you ever needed a good demonstration of the quote "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic", have I got an exercise for you.
Somebody made a small article explaining the basics of atomic theory but it's written in Anglish. Anglish is basically a made-up version of English where they remove any elements (words, prefixes, etc) that were originally borrowed from romance languages like french and latin, as well as greek and other foreign loanwords, keeping only those of germanic origin.
What happens is an english which is for the most part intelligible, but since a lot everyday english, and especially the scientific vocabulary, has has heavy latin and greek influence, they have to make up new words from the existing germanic-english vocabulary. For me it kind of reads super viking-ey.
Anyway when you read this article on atomic theory, in Anglish called Uncleftish Beholding, you get this text which kind of reads like a fantasy novel. Like in my mind it feels like it recontextualizes advanced scientific concepts to explain it to a viking audience from ancient times.
Even though you're familiar with the scientific ideas, because it bypasses the normal language we use for these concepts, you get a chance to examine these ideas as if you were a visitor from another civilization - and guess what, it does feel like it's about magic. It has a mythical quality to it, like it feels like a book about magic written during viking times. For me this has the same vibe as reading deep magic lore from a Robert Jordan book.
