So I have a wip about Lucienne and Dream both trying to figure out how to tell each other that they miss the closeness/displays of affection from when Lucienne was his raven. I only meant to add a sentence but please enjoy this mini fic that will eventually be part of a larger fic:
-
Dream comes to her as a raven.
And suddenly touch isn’t so hard after all.
Lucienne knows this; knows it as she knows him, knows what closeness had been to a raven, gives it to Dream just as she takes it back for herself. She runs her fingers along the slope of his back, dips to touch the feathers of one wing, switches to admire the other one too. Then up over the top of his head, around to under his neck, to crook her finger there and gently scratch at the skin beneath the feathers.
The eyes blink; they close, Dream stills under her touch, no held tension but the space between inhale and exhale, that moment of blissful inaction before breathing in or out.
Lucienne smiles.
She laughs softly, exhales herself, breathes something broken out into her (their) library and that means she can let it go. A memory now layers at her fingertips, protection like a callous, abraids the softness of one hundred years alone until it’s strong.
“Hello my raven.” She greets teasingly.
The eyes open.
They are his, starlit; constellations and connections, no star left to shine alone, held together for all the space between them endeavors to make them seem so far apart.
The beak shifts to press against her fingers, to trail its knife sharp edge along her skin without even the risk of making a cut.
A beloved voice murmurs—
“Hello my dream.”

Hello hello everyone!! Long time no see :) I've had this frans in my head for YEARS...I started the character design sheet last year (or was it two years ago?) but recently decided to get off my ass and finish it! So here's a product of hard, August work!
I'm kinda sad to see so many of my frans peers gone, but I hope they're doing well! While I probably won't be some huge online presence going forwards, I'm still excited to support the new gen while I can!
ANYWAYS!! This is my interpretation of HT frans! (og creator @/horrortalecomic) that takes place around a decade after Frisk's escape from the underground. Their life kinda goes downhill fast though, as the combined survivor's guilt, insane trauma after battling the horror known as Omega Flowey, and the sheer lack of a support system just kinda destroys them in that period of time. I won't dwell too much on that time period, though! After moving away from the og Mt. Ebbot city, Frisk gets their fresh start, regularly going to therapy, taking their PTSD meds, managing a pretty popular bookshop downtown, and living with their super supportive roomates!
...And then the monsters are freed, which does throw Frisk into a whirlwind, but after a year or two they feel pretty safe. No monsters seemed to have moved to their city (especially since the monster population is significantly smaller than it was before), so everything would be okay. Until that fateful day...
Tumblr media
here they are! fyi frisk's skin, eye and hair colour (except for the blonde streaks) apply to all my frisks now!
I'll add some info here i couldn't fit in the tags! -> They have a fun coworker dynamic where Frisk does NOT know he doesn't remember them so they're constantly walking on eggshells around him.
-> Frisk: Oh god he's after me he followed me for revenge but I deserve it oh god he's so mad at me
-> Sans: wow my manager is so kind and pretty and fun :)
-> Also sans is going to therapy, specifically to treat his memory problems,, so we don't know how long his positive view of Frisk will last...

You're not going to keep shipping Charlastor after the new episodes will you :(? I mean it is now confirmed by Rosie that Charlie is too young for him /nm /gen
How would Rosie know how old Charlie is exactly?
I think she was guessing based on appearance more than anything here.
Multiple sources in the past, including people who've worked on the pilot and Viv herself, have all said that Charlie is over 200 years old (though it has been noted that biologically she's more equatable to being in her 20s).
I don't think they'd change that out of the blue and have a secondary character that had only just met Charlie confirm her age, and especially not with so much vagueness to the statement.
If you want to interpret it that way, be my guest! But I personally wouldn't count it as reliable evidence in the slightest. This sounds more like the kind of thing people fish for when they want to discredit their notp at all costs.
So, as I see it, there's currently nothing genuinely problematic about their dynamic.
Alas: Unless there's actual, hard evidence for it, I'm not gonna stop.
If you disagree with that you're more than welcome to unfollow me (if you ever did)! It'd be absolutely in your right to and I would be the last person to judge you for it! /gen /nm
I've simply been in fandoms for far too many years to let some fans' interpretation of something this unsubstantiated rule over what I can and can't ship on the off chance that it turns out to be true after all.
I'm not forcing anyone to look at my shipping posts, I do try to tag everything as accurately as possible so it's easy to block and filter - allowing you do have all the tools at your disposal to stop seeing those posts from me ^^.
EDIT: in hindsight I realized that trying to consider age gaps in hazbin hotel's setting is kind of pointless anyways actually, something I've detailed my thoughts on in this post. To summarize: sinner demons don't age and it makes everything weird and kind of impossible to track and/or judge in this way. It's easier to just look at unbalanced power dynamics and uninformed/coerced consent to judge this kinda stuff for this show.

More gen (non-romantic) fic recs for @genuaryficrecs! Fandom: DC, batfam. Focus: Dysfunctional Batfam Type of gen relationships: parental and/or siblings This trope is kinda close to the Bad Bruce one but it's not quite the same; a Bad Bruce often is a manipulative bastard in control of everything, or just uncaring, while to qualify for this trope Bruce (or another family member) has to genuinely try and still be objectively terrible - and not just comically bad at communicating either; it usually references the several canon instances where Bruce knowingly inflicted severe physical injury to Jason, or beat his kids (or the various assassination attempts between siblings); usually also involves complex siblings dynamics. And they fucked up, and they still love each other so much but they don't really know how not to hurt each other and they're trying so very very hard and they're learning.
(… maybe don't read all of them in a row though, I don't think that could be good for anyone)
to the red planet Mars, by r_astra (https://archiveofourown.org/works/27613958) 6/6 Chapters, 36,912 words Not Rated, Graphic Depictions Of Violence
Main Characters: Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, the rest of the batfam
Official summary: Tim doesn’t notice the Batmobile roaring into the cave until the tires squeal as it skids to a halt. He starts, splashing long-cooled coffee across his lap as he lurches upright. Bruce is practically throwing himself out of the driver’s seat. He stalks around to the back of the car and Tim stares, confused. The trunk? He calls out. “Mask?” Bruce grunts a negative. Tim circles the car in time to see Bruce haul something—someone out. They’re big, but not quite as tall as Bruce, clad in black Kevlar and brown leather, wrists cuffed. Tim stops in his tracks when he recognizes the man. It’s Jason Todd.
Why I love it: This is about Bruce and Jason's relationship. This is someone going hey. Look at those canon events. If you stop and think about it, that's fucked up. And I love fics that look close like that at canon. And the characters in there are Not Okay - it's a story about abuse - but it's never hopeless. Because they're trying so hard to make it right and they've fucked up a whole lot, but they (the whole family) love each other and they're trying.
Excerpt: “We’re going to the cave.” Hood jerks his head up. “Hell, no.” Bruce starts walking towards the Batmobile. “No,” Hood repeats. “No way. I’m not allowed in Gotham, remember?” “Hn.” Bruce keeps walking, the pressure in his head building and then easing as Hood must start following. Hood doesn’t respond, but Bruce can hear him swearing under his breath in one long, continuous stream. When they reach the Batmobile, Bruce pulls out a pair of cuffs. “Seriously?” Hood sighs. He holds his wrists out anyway. Bruce slaps the cuffs on and checks to make sure they adjusted themselves correctly, then grabs Hood by the elbow and starts dragging him towards the back of the vehicle. Hood must be processing slowly, because he doesn’t start fighting until they get within a yard of the trunk. Bruce wins.

An Aquarium of Nameless Things, by husborth (https://archiveofourown.org/works/18308171) 4/4 chapters, 14.120 words (has a very good second work in the series at 45k more, with a wider batfam sample; the second work is technically unfinished but stops at a satisfying place) T, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson
Official summary: After a difficult case, Jason learns a few things about Bruce, and deals with them about as well as Jason deals with anything.
Why I love it: I like this interpretation of Jason and the Pit, with Jason trying really hard to keep a lid on it but also being emotionally 15 (I know nothing about emotional development I just once read the phrase "emotions too big for his body" and liked it), and swinging between actually dangerous/hurtful and siblingly petty. And them all being in over their heads and Bruce not healed yet (never healing) from Jason's death and a Dick, over-protective of Bruce, who never really knew Jason before, and the crushing weight of responsibility. They just feel so strongly.
Excerpts: “You’re an annoying prick who didn’t even eat all of my ravioli, which you stole,” Jason said into the phone. “[…] Also my carpet smells like mildew, so if you want to come shampoo my carpet in apology for your whole everything, that’d be great.” - “No,” Dick admitted. “But it’s my turn. Bruce almost died of an oxycontin overdose in front of me. Did you know that?” Jason’s face turned red and hot and got tight—liar, liar, liar, pants on fire, the fire licking at his legs in just the millennium he lay there dying, sucking air through bloody lungs. A lie. A sham. He’d been tricked, Bruce had tricked him, Bruce had made him think he cared but this was a lie, these were all lies. He would die, he would pass in a storm before him, and Jason would be left to root through the garbage, he’d be—the dogs were barking loud and they tore his heels bloody. “No,” Jason choked out. “I didn’t.”

never be the first to believe, by ohnomydear (https://archiveofourown.org/works/17967926) 15/15 chapters, 98.132 words T, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Ric Grayson
Official Summary: If Bruce 'made up' with Jason at the diner following the events at Sanctuary, the Red Hood shouldn't be reluctant to ask Bruce for permission to be in Gotham for a necessary surgery. Instead, Jason kidnaps Tim and asks him to make sure Bruce doesn't know he's in Gotham. Yeah, nothing about this sounds like they've forgiven each other.
Why I love it: That one is ostensibly about Jason and Bruce, and the aftermath of the big fight where Bruce beats Jason all to hell. But it's also (more so, imo) about each of the siblings' relationships with Jason, and with Bruce. Yay for Robins banding together against Bruce. People talking past each other, contradicting POVs, and what forgiveness means/looks like. Also this one has an amnesiac Ric, which creates fun character dynamics.
Excerpt: “How did you get me this far?” And whose car was this? “The truth, or would you like a face-saving lie that we can both pretend to believe?” Tim groaned and reached for the coffee. “Which board room did I fall asleep in?” “Your office. For once. But intern Jared noticed and called the car company, which showed up in record time.” Jason gestured with one hand at the car around them. “And then they ‘took you home.’” “Why not just wake me up?” Tim hissed. “And don’t even get me started on how I don’t have an intern Jared and I’m really suspicious that he and the car company driver look astonishingly similar.” “Guilty. And as Bruce has always said, if Tim falls asleep on patrol, it’s because he made poor decisions about how much sleep he needed.” Tim gaped at him. “He—he doesn’t say that.” “No, he doesn’t.” Jason grinned. “But let’s say that I say it. Now, to business. Sorry I didn’t get the copies of the agenda printed first, but I was busy finding a wheelchair to get you out of the building.” Tim dropped his head into his left hand, groaning. “You realize I do have to go back there, right? And explain what that all was?” “That doesn’t sound like intern Jared’s or Driver Ulysses’ problem. Both of them are more concerned with finding their respective missing twin brothers – and solving the terrible murder of their mother, which took place ten sad, sad years ago.” Great. He’d made up backstories for covers with a four second half-life. Tim took a sip of the coffee and found it passable. “The agenda?” “You know I’m not allowed in Gotham.” Jason’s voice had gone flat, as if the humor had just dropped out of it.

How Far Love Goes, by BeatriceEagle (@flybynightwing) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/31871722) 11/11 chapters, 99.549 words T, Graphic Depictions of Violence
Main Characters: the whole batfam
Official summary: Plenty of family reunions end in fighting. Not that many end in explosions. A mass Arkham breakout brings all of Bruce's children home, and with them, all the drama, secrets, and anger they've been keeping for years. Amidst rising tensions and a mysterious new threat in Gotham, the family has to work together to round up the rogues—and confront their feelings about each other.
Why I love it: A main plot peppered by tasty flashbacks (that inform our understanding of the present) of batfam interactions through twelve years, ranging from cute to heartrending. Complex relationships web that actually includes the girls too (Babs and Steph and Cass!).
Excerpts: “How about Nightwing?” said a voice from above, and then Nightwing somersaulted from the branches of a nearby tree, landing lightly on the ground beside Cass. Batman pivoted half a degree to face him. “Oracle called you too?” “Of course she did, B, there was an Arkham breakout.” “It’s handled.” Nightwing crossed his arms. “Handled like it was last time?” Batman mirrored Nightwing’s stance. “It’s handled.” “Excuse me, but I don’t feel like standing by and watching you get your back broken ag—” “Go back to Blüdhaven. They need you there.” Batman spun around and stalked away. Nightwing stared after him, his body leaning in the direction Batman had gone, like he was about to run after him. Then he slumped backward. “Unbelievable. Just unbelievable.” He turned to Cass. As always, his body language screamed awkwardness when he spoke to her. Even facing her, he angled his shoulders away, like he didn’t want to be in this conversation. “Is he letting you help him?” Cass shrugged one shoulder, deciding that was better than trying to put the mess of hers, Barbara’s, and Batman’s stand-off into words - [flashback from Dick's Robin days] Then, for the first time since they'd begun their stakeout, movement beside him. Dick looked over. Batman's hand stretched out towards him. In his gauntleted palm, a single yellow M&M. Dick looked up. Batman's face was unchanged. But the M&M was obviously for Dick, right? He picked it up gingerly, as if it were explosive. (And given that it had come from within Batman's cape, who was to say it wasn't?) Eyes still on Batman, Dick put the candy in his mouth. Just chocolate. No explosions. Batman's hand withdrew back into his cape. A moment later it emerged with another M&M. Green this time. Dick took it and grinned.

May I please have p1 dude x reader Headcanons 💕 I love him so much (sob)
Also I'm from the RWS server LOL
P1 dude/reader HCs
I’m not gonna lie to you chief i am writing this in my lecture hall because i have no time otherwise LMAOO
Enjoy !!
——————————-
He’s not very social so the fact that you two even met in the first place is lowkey a miracle. He’ll dwell on this a lot. Were it not for the fact that the two of you were coincidentally at the same grocery store at the same time, he doesn’t think you would’ve ever even have heard of him.
(this is more of a gen headcanon, but) adding on to his antisocial personality, it’s been years since the incident in paradise (however you may interpret it, whether it be just a dream or an actual, physical event,) that lead to his long-term hospitalization at the paradise psychiatric ward. He had been staying there for as long as he can remember, only being released very recently due to medical advancements with medication for mental health issues. It’s not exactly a topic he likes to talk about though he may crack a joke that you’re not sure you can laugh at every once in a while.
Very schedule oriented. When you two began dating it was difficult for him to adjust to having another presence in his life. In the beginning he usually had to host dates at his place, just because he didn’t want to adjust at all. Its a push and pull process but the two of you are working on a more relaxed, healthier schedule.
You’ll notice that he patrols the borders of his house every once in a while. His paranoia can get high and at times he feels unsafe in his home. It’s mostly harmless behavior, and he doesn’t mind if you join him.
You're going to be subject to a LOT of rambling about his weapons. He's a big collector, doesn't matter if they don't work, as long as they can look pretty. He keeps his “real” firearms and ammunition in safeboxes around his house. If you don't already know, he's teaching you how to use them.
As I've stated in other writings, I think that all of the dudes enjoy physical contact in one way or another. Unlike P2, P1 dude prefers to initiate physical contact and be able to pull away at any time. Don’t get him wrong, he loves physical contact, but he can be overstimulated at times and would prefer to not be in a pissy mood when around you.
When you start getting him to go out, he prefers to be able to go out to somewhere more spacious and more nature oriented, (as stated in the dating HCs.) so he can bring baby Champ with him.
Speaking of Champ, that puppy is his fucking lifeline. I like to think that in this universe Champ is his service dog in training, and is the first thing he received when he left the ward. If you don’t fw Champ, the chances of you two getting together are lower than 0%. On the other hand, nothing brings him more joy than when you’re lazing around at his home together and you start playing with Champ. He thoroughly enjoys it when you help him with Champ’s training, he loves seeing his two favorites get along!
Does not like it when he misses taking his meds. You’re going to have to assure him that missing one dosage isn’t going to erase all of the progress he’s made. Dude would be more on edge on the days when that happens. Sometimes this will lead to a meltdown, and honestly (as somebody who has the same issues that he does,) there really isn’t much you can do except be there for him.
Appreciates everything you do for him and will not hesitate to try to one-up you. You’ve offhandedly bought him food? He’s treating you to dinner. Homemade. Take care of him when he’s sick? Flowers, chocolate, and a day out with Champ. He doesn’t have the most money in the world but he wants to show you that he cares too.
Doesn’t want to seem dependent on anything, so sometimes he might pull away from you. He’s been independent for most of his life, so it hits an insecurity when he thinks he might have been “burdening” you with his issues. He’s not exactly used to being treated with so much kindness.
Overall? Be patient with this man for the love of god. It’ll take him some time to open up and yeah, he’s got his issues, but in the end he’s just a guy trying to make the best of a life full of experiences he never asked for.

More Monster High redesigns!!
Part 1 | Ko-Fi | Commissions
Details under the cut:
Lagoona definitely ended up being the furthest removed from any canon design of hers
I went in knowing I wanted to keep g1’s curly hair and kinda sporty style, but besides that I didn’t have much of a plan
I gave her a swimsuit under the hoodie and shorts, mainly to add some layering and to fit in the scale pattern somewhere
I also kept g3’s octopus sandals because I thought they were really cute, but not much else came from gen 3
I shortened her hair and went back and forth between making her hair blond or a different color, and eventually settled on the purple because it felt less human and tied the color palette together better
I really like where her design ended up, though it took a while to make it feel cohesive
I like to think my version would keep the Australian accent, but as far as her background goes I’m really not sure what she’d be, so it’s open to interpretation
Cleo’s design took a LOT of different drafts before I was happy with it
Cleo’s gen 3 design is one of my favorites and I really wanted to emulate it while keeping the Queen Bee vibe of gen 1, but it was hard to make her look like a believable teenager while also making her regal and glamorous
I tried giving her a skirt but didn’t like it, so I settled on pants kinda similar to g1
I shortened her hair on a whim and then kept it, I kept trying to give her g1’s bangs but it wasn’t working with her makeup and face shape so I gave it up
I wanted the top part of her shirt to be semi-transparent and the bandages to be asymmetrical without being distracting
I gave her as many accessories as I possibly could without cluttering the design too much
I also gave her as many triangles in her design as possible
I tried to lean into Hollywood depictions of Cleopatra rather than go for historical accuracy, since that seems to be more what canon Cleo is based off of
Ghoulia is one of my favorite Monster High characters and I had a lot of fun putting my design for her together
I leaned pretty hard into the emo/scene inspirations and ended up losing much of the rockabilly vibes from g1, which is a bit of a shame, but I enjoyed where the design landed so much that it was a sacrifice I was willing to make
I gave her tousled scene hair, and tried to make her look a little disheveled/roughed up so she’d read more like a zombie
The only thing I really ended up borrowing from gen 3 was the pink in her color palette and some brain/goop imagery, but I don’t really like g3 Ghoulia so I largely stuck with g1
I don’t think I changed much in the end, just gave her some extra flair and made her look a little nerdier
My Ghoulia would still speak in the same manner as g1, though I like the idea of her being non-verbal rather than her speaking in Zombie so I’m going with that

C'est fou comme les gens ont de moi cette image de femme sophistiquée, glaciale. C'est une telle erreur, c'est tellement mal me connaître.
- Catherine Deneuve on herself in Belle de Jour (1967)
In anticipation of a new film this summer by Catherine Deneuve called ‘Bernadette’ where she plays Bernadette Chirac, the wife of French Jacques Chirac, I’ve been re-watching some her back catalogue of films. She’s done over 64 films and at almost 80 years old she’s still going strong. And yet out of her many films I’ve always been drawn back to one film which has become a cult classic. Watching it and re-watching it and even gorging on books on its making, new intriguing details reveal themselves about this landmark French art house classic - Belle de Jour (1967).
I once had the privilege of having dinner with her - or rather sat around the same table - through a Parisian host and his lovely wife who had gathered an eclectic group of friends across generations together. I was too self-conscious to talk about her film career directly. I was on surer ground when we indulged in small talk where she was perfectly down to earth and very pleasant. I felt it would be rude to go all fan girl on her and pepper her with questions about Belle de Jour in particular as she’s known to be very ambivalent about her experience of the film - a film that really defined her in the eyes of many people.
But it didn’t mean she didn’t recognise its cultural importance though as she was quite happy to amuse us with a funny story about Belle de Jour. A newly restored 35mm version was funded by the fashion house Saint Laurent back in 2018. Deneuve always had a close relationship with Yves Saint Laurent and also the fashion house. She was the one to introduce Buñuel to Saint Laurent. So the fashion house had a glitzy premiere in New York. But they didn’t count on many of their guests being late. Most of the guests were stuck in the New York traffic and the rain. However Martin Scorsese was the only one to get out of cab and run like a mad man through the pelting rain and huge traffic. A true cinephile, he was so desperate to see the film restored to its former glory that he would go to any lengths to see it.
Tumblr media
In Belle de Jour, Catherine Deneuve, whose limpid beauty is capable of sustaining any interpretation, is a perfect Severine and demonstrates a remarkable control in progressing, with enormous economy of gesture and movement, from frigidity to physical warmth as the bored housewife who indulges in part time sex work.
“I felt they showed more of me than they’d said they were going to,” Catherine Deneuve remarked to Pascal Bonitzer in 2004, about the making of Luis Buñuel’s 1967 Belle de jour. “There were moments when I felt totally used. I was very unhappy.”
The story of Séverine, a deeply disenchanted haute bourgeois Paris housewife who finds erotic liberation through byzantine psycho-sexual fantasies and part-time work at an upscale brothel, Belle de jour certainly made extreme demands of Deneuve: her character is flogged, raped, and pelted with muck, among other assaults. But despite her objections to the way she was treated and her difficulties with Buñuel, Deneuve’s performance in Belle de jour turned out to be one of her most iconic.
Tumblr media
Deneuve, who had become a star only three years earlier, as the melancholy jeune fille in Jacques Demy’s 1964 all-sung musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, was just twenty-three when Belle de jour came out; notably, Buñuel’s film was released in France less than three months after Demy’s radiant, MGM-inspired musical The Young Girls of Rochefort, starring Deneuve and her real-life sister Françoise Dorléac.
But Belle de jour, more than any other film from the first decade of her career, defined what would become one of the actress’s most notorious personae: the exquisite blank slate lost in her own masochistic fantasies and onto whom all sorts of perversions could be projected. (Deneuve as deviant tabula rasa was first seen in Roman Polanski’s 1965 Repulsion, in which she plays a damaged beauty plummeting into psychosis; but Belle de jour doesn’t portray its heroine as mad, instead remaining deliberately ambiguous about the origins of her unconventional desires - and presaging the bizarre libertines she would later play in such films as Marco Ferreri’s Liza, 1972, and Tony Scott’s The Hunger, 1983.)
Tumblr media
Buñuel was at a very different stage of his career from his young star, but Belle de jour represented a peak for him as well, the greatest - and most successful - film of his extremely rich late period. These works, bookended by 1964’s Diary of a Chambermaid and 1977’s That Obscure Object of Desire (his final film), were made mostly in France - where Buñuel had begun his filmmaking career with the incendiary, surrealist Un chien andalou (1929) - following the exiled Spanish director’s two decades in Mexico.
Many of these late projects were cowritten with Jean-Claude Carrière and focus intensely on sexual perversion (a theme that recurs throughout Buñuel’s work). Belle de jour certainly falls into that category, and also, typically, skewers the entitled classes. Yet it stands out as the director’s most intricate character study—but of a protagonist who resists definition; the heroine, frequently trussed up and mussed up, retains an odd, opaque dignity in her debauchery.
Tumblr media
In that same interview with Bonitzer, Deneuve was judicious enough to distinguish her experience of making Belle de jour from the final product, calling it a “wonderful film.” But her first meetings with Buñuel hinted at the duress that was to follow. According to John Baxter’s 1994 biography, Buñuel, it took time for the director to “warm to” his star: “He felt, with some justice, that she had been foisted on him, first by the Hakims [Belle de jour’s producers], then by her lover of the time, François Truffaut.” After dining with Buñuel at his house, the book recounts, Deneuve “left with little more than an impression that he disliked actors in general and was reserving his decision about her. The only advice he offered was the advice he had always given actors: ‘Don’t do anything. And above all, don’t . . . perform.’”
Though Deneuve deferred to her director, she was no puppet; Belle de jour is as much hers as Buñuel’s. The filmmaker, famously resistant to “psychological” interpretations of his work, stuffs Belle de jour with his trademarks, confounding any attempt to parse meaning: the surrealist blurring of fantasy and reality, fetishism, sexual perversion, blasphemy.
But as Séverine, Deneuve, despite operating in the nebulous realm between dream and waking, imbues the film with irresistible and very real lust - and luster. Sporting the chicest Yves Saint Laurent finery, Deneuve revels in the peculiar desires of her character while always inviting our own. As Buñuel himself acknowledges in his 1984 autobiography, My Last Sigh (published a year after his death), Belle de jour “was my biggest commercial success, which I attribute more to the marvelous whores than to my direction.” (Per Baxter, after the filming of Belle de jour, he would finally admit of his star, “She’s really a very good actress.”) Deneuve’s gift was to update the world’s oldest profession for her still-expanding résumé.
Tumblr media
The director had some modifying to do as well. Buñuel, who adapted Joseph Kessel’s 1928 novel with Carrière, assessed the source material dryly in My Last Sigh: “The novel is very melodramatic, but well constructed, and it offered me the chance to translate Séverine’s fantasies into pictorial images as well as to draw a serious portrait of a young female bourgeois masochist. I was also able to indulge myself in the faithful description of some interesting sexual perversions.”
Tumblr media
He wastes no time in establishing those bizarre erotic proclivities. In Belle de jour’s opening scene, Séverine and her doting husband of one year, Pierre Serizy (Jean Sorel), a handsome, dutiful surgeon, are snuggled close in a horse-drawn carriage; he interrupts the tender moment with the lament “If only you weren’t so cold.” She pulls away, defensive. The sound of horse bells, which has been increasing in volume from the film’s first shot - and will indicate Séverine’s dreams or fantasies throughout - stops. Pierre orders his wife out of the cab; when she refuses, he and the two drivers remove her by force. She is gagged, bound to a tree, and whipped by the coachmen, who are then instructed by Pierre to rape her. When one begins to ravish her, Séverine appears to be in ecstasy.
This carnal reverie is soon interrupted by the Serizys at home, preparing for their usual chaste bedtime ritual. Pierre, in white pajamas, asks his pale-pink-nightie-clad wife, under the covers in a separate bed, what she’s thinking about: “I was thinking about you . . . and us. We were out for a ride in a carriage”—a scenario Pierre has heard before.
Tumblr media
The fantasy clearly belongs to Séverine alone; she finds erotic thrills in her secret thoughts of debasement and humiliation, her florid imagination compensating for her sterile, sexless existence. Her most private desires will soon be realized at 11, cité Jean de Saumur, the address of the boutique bordello run by Madame Anaïs (Geneviève Page), given to Séverine by Pierre’s louche friend Husson (Michel Piccoli).
At Madame Anaïs’s, Séverine - now going by the nom de pute Belle de jour, a reference to her two-to-five shift (she insists on being home when Pierre returns from his workday at the hospital) - is horrified at first but proves to be a quick study. A burly Asian client scares off her two seasoned colleagues with his mysterious, buzzing lacquered box, but she is absolutely transfixed; after the john leaves, she, lying prone on the bed, lifts her head, her luxuriant mane of blonde hair disheveled, to reveal a woman still drunk on orgasmic pleasure.
Tumblr media
The contents of the box are one of the film’s many mysteries (when asked what is inside, Buñuel would reply, “Whatever you want there to be”). Yet the greatest enigma is Séverine herself: why does she recoil from the slightest sexual advance from her husband yet lose herself, both in fantasy and in her new line of work, in elaborate masochistic tableaux? “Pierre, it’s your fault too. I can explain everything,” Séverine insists to her husband in the opening fantasy sequence, as she’s being forcibly removed from the landau. But of course, she can’t - and won’t.
As in Repulsion, there are flashbacks to possible childhood trauma in Belle de jour. In one, a man appears to touch a young Séverine inappropriately; in another, she stubbornly refuses the Blessed Sacrament. But unlike in Repulsion, whose final, prolonged shot of a menacing family photo is offered as the root of Carole’s pathology, these scenes in Buñuel’s film are almost non sequiturs, presented not as psychological explanation but as blips in a baroque sexual surrealism.
Tumblr media
As Séverine’s reveries and job demands become stranger and more mysterious - in one daydream, she is pelted with thick black mud by Pierre and Husson, who call her “tramp” and “slut”; a ducal client solicits her in the bois de Boulogne to perform in a necrophilic rite - Deneuve retains her porcelain, celestial inscrutability, while simultaneously transforming into an earthbound debauchee, delighting in her own defilement. Madame Anaïs (whose early, shameless flirtation with Séverine - who eventually reciprocates - is the first of the many moments in Deneuve’s filmography that would cement her status as a lesbian icon) touts her new employee’s regal bearing to prospective customers: “[She’s] a little shy, perhaps, but a real aristocrat.”
Séverine’s coworkers, Charlotte (Françoise Fabian) and Mathilde (Maria Latour), are constantly remarking on the impeccable cut and style of her ensembles. Yet what this seemingly untouchable goddess craves most is the brutality of her latest john, the thug Marcel (Pierre Clémenti), a rough with metal teeth, a walking stick that doubles as a shiv, and fetishwear (shiny boots of leather with matching overcoat) that could have been dreamed up in an atelier overseen by Kenneth Anger and Pierre Cardin.
Tumblr media
Séverine’s relationship with Marcel will lead to Pierre’s ruin - or does it? The ambiguous ending of Belle de jour suggests that everything that preceded it may have existed only in the heroine’s cracked dreamscape. Like the buzzing box, the film’s final scene is whatever you want it to be.
Yet one thing is certain: Deneuve transcends kink. And despite her misery during the Belle de jour shoot, she would return for even more bizarre treatment three years later in Buñuel’s Tristana, losing both her virtue and a leg.
Almost 55 years after it was made Belle de Jour continues to be a compelling film. It takes on greater curiosity for me as I live in Paris and there are Séverines aplenty that I come across. But the film also speaks to a non-French audience even today as it remains a shrewd commentary on the hypocrisy of social relations and sexual politics. Buñuel invites us to ponder the transgression of a socially respectable woman secretly being a prostitute in the afternoons, but I don’t think he bothered to pose the question why a socially respectable gentleman should be secretly visiting a prostitute in the afternoons - which happens more than one might think and that behaviour is normalised. Something to think about.

Kill Strike Trigger by llethe I Chapters 17/17 I Completed Gen or Pre-Slash, Bucky/Natasha, Bucky & Sam, Bucky Remembers, Steve/Sharon implied, Hydra, World Travel, SHIELD
Rumlow actually smiles and crackles “our puppet, like you,” his voice so quiet and the words so distorted that Barnes just barely makes them out. He tells himself that they’re just words, and they’re just words designed to elicit an emotional response. It’s been just two months; there’s nothing HYDRA could have done by now, to make those words true. Right? A story of how far three people will go to bring Steve Rogers home -- and of how far HYDRA will go to bring home their Winter Soldier.

Y’know, I have a funny story with the ship between Innocence and Pebbles.
@eggobuggo , my sister, was playing The Sims and made the iterators in her own humanised forms, including her version of Innocence and Wind, along with Moon, Pebbles, NSH and Suns, all with their own personalities and stuff. She set up a generic apartment, put the gang in, and just had fun making them do silly shenanigans together, while I sit and watched her play.
In particular, we headcanon NSH, Pebbles and Innocence as Gen 3s, the newer modes, and so she made them into teenagers, which, with a DLC, have a whole new host of features that are not in the base game. This includes getting crushes (which weirdly enough, young adults and adults cannot get).
But anyway, one day, later into the game (the gang basically all were in the high end of the friendship scale with each other), the notif board popped up that Innocence had gotten a crush on Pebbles. Unfortunately for her, NSH and Pebs were already being all flirty with each other (Ragequit is where it’s at for us), making Pebble basically keep her in the friendzone. Ngl, my heart went out to her :,) Especially so, because they were all sharing a room. (space was tight)
After that, I began thinking about it in context of it in-universe, and ngl, I came to quite liking it as a ship, especially since I see Innocence to be less… asshole-ish (?), I guess, than what the general fandom makes her out to be (I mean it’s understandable, we only see her to leak the pic of Pebbles condition and that’s it.). To me and Eggo, she’s much nicer unless you really piss her off, which then, her more cynical and gossipy side of her comes out. She was actually more of on the friends side with Pebble before the shit went down.
At the time, I thought “dang, it’s a shame I won’t be seeing anything of it since she’s so obscure.”. This was a couple months before I began seeing art of them on the main tag.
Soooo… I guess I’m somewhat of an og Milkshake (as is the fandom name) shipper???
Just, seeing you and others make art about them is almost surreal in a way, since the only reason I really considered them as a ship was cuz of a random event in a life sim game lol.
Also @eggobuggo, I hope you don’t mind me sharing the story. :)
Wow, that seems like quite the story! And I do agree, after witnessing something like that in a totally different game it must be pretty surreal to see the ship gaining popularity in the actual RW fandom now too! It's nice to get another seal of approval from an original Milkshake shipper!
For me, it's also a bit strange because it's something I've considered for a really long time as a lingering "oh, wouldn't it be cool if I could make this work?" idea. The obscurity and lack of content for UI to draw inspiration from, both canon and fanon, definitely added to these feelings and the difficulty of imagining a working portrayal of the ship, hence I've only recently felt confident enough about the relationship and UI as a character to act on it. So after Pura coined the ship name and made a lot more art of it, then other artists started expressing approval and even drawing it themselves, it almost feels like I'm watching the ship enter the mainstream (Tumblr) fandom consciousness in real time, which is honestly pretty cool, especially since it feels like I had a hand in it with that initial ask! And even if I wasn't the very first to consider it, I'll definitely continue supporting this ship!
For some other thoughts though, I totally agree on Innocence not being mean in reality, though for me she's not mean or gossipy at all and more so has a kind-of opposite major flaw that tends to cause bad things unintentionally. As much as I can understand interpreting the character as a genuinely mean person, I thought it'd be interesting to imagine that her leaking the rot simply caused others to perceive her as mean, not that she's that way in reality. After all, I don't think we ever see direct dialogue from Innocence in canon, and the only evidence I can find of her being mean is Wind's speculation on her motivations. I also took inspiration from @shkika's Innocence, but I just wanted to see if I could take those ideas further to create my own unique interpretation.
Also, it's actually pretty coincidental you're telling me this too, because in regards to what I've come up for my Milkshake portrayal, Innocence having an unrequited crush on Pebbles for a really long time is actually really important for both plot and character arc reasons! I've been developing my own take on the classic worm-off-the-string iterator AU idea with @hail-strom for like the past week or so and the ship as of now plays a decent role in that, but the unrequited crush acts as subtle, yet major context for Innocence's actions throughout, which in turn slowly influence Pebbles especially as he starts to reciprocate those feelings (much to his alarm)!
Anyway, thanks for sharing that with me, and thanks for giving me a chance to ramble about this ship more! I'm honestly so happy to see it growing, and all support counts!

Hi!!!
I love your DN art so much, it gives me will to live, it gets me through the day.
I wanna draw like you oh my god you have this storyboard artist kind of style. Effortlessly expressive and dynamic.
Can I worship you? Jk jk (or am I?)
Your A is the best interpretation of this character I have ever seen. I love her.
I have some questions if you have a minute or two 🥺
Can you give me 3 favourite DN fics?
Do you have musical associations for characters (especially B)?
How do you personally feel about L and about Mikami?
What is your favourite food and day of the week?
Please never stop clowning ! 🤡❤️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is extremely nice of you, thank you !! it's been ages since I've drawn canon DN stuff...
Thank you for the sweet message, I know I still have a long path ahead in terms of improvement as an artist but I value your words immensely as they motivate me to go on now, THE QUESTIONSSss...
Fics I remember killed me on sight
This is how I disappear. (gen) 10/10, work of art, made me sit at the edge of my seat. I recommend everything from this author, definitely DO MIND the tags though! it's dark
If you're into AUs and Lawlight, here's one where Light runs for presidency (Those who stand for nothing fall for anything) and one where he's a cryptid investigator (The forest holds strange creatures), they're both awesome in unique ways. Both are explicit, take that into account
If you're interested in reading different interactions and a very unique twist to the canon events where Naomi is the protagonist, Silent Partner, Unifinished Business is amazing and very suspensey
This one is long, immense, ultra suspensey, with a lot of different characters interacting in interesting ways I never thought before, very lawlight and very explicit, (but I read it all in like 3 days because it caught me BAD and was foaming at the mouth during the entire course of it), also was the founding inspiration to my BB brainrot and design-> Nights
I also made a masterpost of all my favourite meronia (melloxnear) fics back when I was balls deep into it
Finally, my AWESOME friends have made abbie x my BB fics for me back in the days which I treasure with my heart, I feel a bit schoopid sharing them because they're basically my OCs and their story remains a secret but they're beautifully written and. I die. I die everytime I remember they did these for me -> First Christmas (explicit), Stand under my Umbrella (short n funny), Just Another Day (sad and short, based on a comic I did years ago)
ANd also, same author as Silent Partner, wrote Dead Letter Office as a gift to me once, and it melted me into a sugary puddle in the ground
Characters and music
Like every other BB kinnie / stan I have my fair share of associated songs, mostly by style and delusion and very few by actual fitting lyrics lol. But here's what I consider his theme song - and also, I headcanon HARD that he has Danny Elfman's voice
How I feel about L and Mikami
L is special to all of us, love the guy, haven't met a single DN fan who doesn't like L. He's just fun and unapologetic which is what I like about him the most.
Mikami I have a hard time caring about, he's just not my usual type of character at all. He's too rigid for me, although he has his unintentional funny side. I also felt he had no chemistry with any other characters, so that made him less interesting for me
Favourite day and week day
I've been very obsessed with cremonas lately : o]
Tumblr media
And my favourite day is saturday now, cause I finally get to have some time for myself to exist!!!!!!!!!!!!! and not work!!!!!!!

@yumantimatter:
I interpret Paul as closer to a fusion a la Steven Universe ("and the names of [SU character's component characters] may as well be names for my right hand and my left") - the clearer line of influence is of course Homestuck's sprite^2 characters but I think the concepts are similar
I don't have any experience of Steven Universe, and when I think of the Homestuck sprite^2s I mostly think of Erisolsprite and Tavrissprite that were inherently unstable due to conflicting personalities, but I guess there were some that worked out better, like Davepetasprite. But I don't know, when I was reading Homestuck, Davepetasprite always just registered as another iteration of Dave that had some Nepeta characteristics for me, and not someone completely different. Like how Jade was still Jade even after combining with Bec
@longroadstonowhere:
with regards to AIM, it didn't quite hit the same level of using 'google' to mean 'search the internet', but i do feel like people were using 'AIM' to refer to the messages themselves at a certain point (i was just young enough to not be part of that myself, though, so i don't have strong memories of linguistic practices at that time)
@wellhappybirthdaytomeiguess:
@longroadstonowhere speaking as a Gen Xer...that's how I remember it, but that's just me.
Oh, you know, I have some vague memories of that now... but I never actually used AIM all that much, it just wasn't how I communicated with people online back then
Re: Lyctors in the cav bodies: wouldn't work for John, I think. He'd be looking at the cop instead of his best friend G, and the money guy instead of his buddy A...and have to remember too that they didn't know about the RBs coming back when they became Lyctors, so it didn't seem to be an issue.
I mean, John certainly knew about them, but I guess I can kind of see that

So what do you think about that young woman, that guy (or girl) texted you about? You think she’s his date or? I quite don’t get it. Does the comment writer thinks she’s someone good or someone bad?
Hello Anon, so it seems that he is getting conflicting information about her role. From the way I see things, there kind of is someone but it is complicated. He says there was a legit separation going on with them living apart and everything. It's been said she's done more black magic to keep him from leaving and she too targeted this woman. I left out some of my stuff to a. Shorten things up and B. showcase his stuff, as he is a psychic who is not part of this Fandom and doesn't even follow Jensen. It's interesting that even though the things he says requires interpretation work at times, he does pick up similar things I do for the most part. As for her, he perceives her as an enemy of his. A wolf in sheep's clothing if this makes sense. In some respects, I suspect some of what's true for Jared and his family is being stated on his behalf as if it applies to Jensen and vice versa.
Jensen and Jared both are surrounded by some bad people. I was told a few weeks before Clif's car was ransacked by thieves per his IG post made on January 31, 2024, "Thieves are closing in around Jared" is something I was told by Hermes who happens to be a deity that's a patron of, well, thieves. With this being said, around the same time period Hermes told me that he also said that "Jared needs to clear out shop" of his entire staff and that "things are underway to make this happen". It was also said that Clif is a priority with Charlie being a close second and his partner in crime Gen.
Take from that what you will but I have a bad feeling more things just might transpire that are a little too close to home for Jared and possibly Jensen as well. Jensen's got a ride ahead of him with legal challenges but given how "entwined" they are on a spiritual level (were supposed to incarnate as 2 souls in 1 body kinda deal), stuff happening to Jared may trickle into Jensen's life and vice versa. I was told over a year ago that Jensen has the most dangerous path off of Earth and Jared the second most dangerous. It seems they are surrounded by some very dark characters and that some malevolent beings are around them as well. Everything that happens astrally/spiritually always transpires physically.

oo when you're not busy I'd *love* to hear your thoughts on non-talkative Ludger 👀
I still have deadlines BUT
tbh I’d recommend this fic for smol not very talkative Ludger (it is shipfic after a time skip HOWEVER if you don’t read past the scene break then it’s a perfectly heartwarming gen fic that I really recommend for being like one of the three fics that acknowledges Claudia’s death)
I’d also recommend this fic for Fractured Ludger talking but Prime Ludger not and Julius getting POV on that
Anyway some 3am thoughts not in order:
Julius initially doesn’t really worry that much that Ludger doesn’t talk, bc the kid’s shy and suffering from amnesia from watching his mom get killed and pre-pasta Julius is just glad he’s not that annoying to deal with
Marvin can’t really say if Ludger talked much before his amnesia because he never really saw Claudia to avoid someone following them, so it’s up in the air whether or not Ludger was always this quiet or if it’s bc of the amnesia
Julius just figures that Ludger seems fine enough for a kid his age and the teachers just gently encourage him to open up a bit to other classmates. This doesn’t really work despite Julius’ best efforts...
Post-pasta Julius does start worrying bc “oh no what if I’ve traumatised this kid irreparably it’s all my fault” but Ludger does get more comfortable talking to Julius at least, and some of the neighbours, but mostly Julius because. *gestures to Ludger’s minimal friendships*
[aims projector] maybe a tiny bit of selectively mute Ludger where he gets quiet under stress or with strangers and Julius is exceedingly normal about Ludger depending on him for help
(Kijara Seafalls affinity choices could have NOT had Julius’ affinity go up if Ludger can’t figure out how to save Elle..)
Otherwise Ludger is sometimes as chatty as Fractured Ch15 Ludger is, but most of the time though he’s more calm and quiet and doesn’t need to be that open.
To what extent Fractured Ludger was wish fulfilment for Julius and what extent he was an accurate representation of Ludger... well 😋 I think Julius just likes feeling special...
Ultimately Ludger just doesn’t really. feel the need to talk that much. Julius gets him just fine and Ludger has mastered the ability to glare in disapproval when Julius overfeeds Rollo.
Anyway this one was actually your HC if I recall correctly but 10/10 Ludger knowing Elympion sign language and sometimes signing even when he talks and he and Elle get to bond over that bc Victor taught Elle to sign too (though he never explained why...)
Elle doesn’t realise that Ludger and Victor do little signing quirks that are alike. Julius does though.
After the game starts Ludger gets even less talkative because he’s in a very stressful situation and Julius isn’t there to help, but Jude’s very kind and Elle also helps interpret for him so it works out
Stealing from my seraph headcanons but since Muzet is a spirit she’s just a little bit telepathic/empathic and so she understands Ludger pretty well and they get along for that (even though Ludger does find it a bit creepy that he can’t lie to her... but Muzet is Muzet so she just finds it funny)
Ludger eventually feels comfortable enough to talk more to the party besides Elle, but conversely he ends up clamming up with Julius and it’s partially out of sheer spite and frustration but. Well Julius is Julius so he just self-deprecates under the assumption that ofc Ludger doesn’t really need him and feels more at ease with his new friends and he’s just lost that privilege (<<< absurd statement)
Some Fractured Ludgers are just that much chattier, like the way Milla’s personality isn’t the same. Julius gets used to it but he’s always grateful to go back to Prime Ludger no matter what. Still, all Ludgers are Ludger to him, so he notices the differences
Victor has definitely got a much better handle on talking since he’s older, and he’s very at ease with Elle anyway. Knowing everything Ludger doesn’t also helps his confidence. The murder does too.
I’m torn between Ludger going nonverbal during Chapter 15 or saying more words in a conversation than the party have ever heard from him and both options are devastating
Prime Ludger teaches Prime Elle to sign, even though he knows she’ll never need it to talk to him, not the same way Victor maybe have wanted. Elle still mirrors his quirks in gestures and it breaks his heart.
Bad End Best End no matter what Ludger finds some words to ask Julius what he wants for dinner and assure him that he was doing what Julius did for him and tell Julius he’ll do anything to have some time left with him I love this game

What makes Usopp so shippable for you (or even overall, what do you enjoy about Usopp's dynamics in his gen/romantic ships)?
He was one of my favorites from the little I've seen/read of OP, so I'm curious to know your thoughts!
What a cool ask! I have an old post both on Tumblr and Dreamwidth about Usopp's emotional role among the Strawhats in general and his platonic dynamics with Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Sanji, and Chopper in particular. The Dreamwidth post is available here: https://rainsometimes.dreamwidth.org/167329.html . In romantic ships, well, when it comes to Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Sanji, I would just add romantic and sexual attraction to the platonic foundations mentioned above. With Luffy - Usopp is up for silly shenanigans and while he will veto the most bizarre ideas Luffy might come up with in bed, he's likely to caught up in fun flights of fancy. I view Luffy as pretty uninterested in dominance play in the bedroom and I think Usopp would be all on board with that, too. They have a really strong bond in canon and it would be a silly and for the most part - if not always - harmonious ship. (Naturally there would be plenty of slapstick violence when Luffy is being idiotic.) With Zoro - the chill relationship I mentioned in the old post would serve them well in a romantic relationship. Now, I do think that Zoro is someone who will always place Luffy's dream and wellbeing higher than anything else, but I actually think that Usopp is similar to Zoro in that regard, and so it makes good sense to ship them. At the same time that they are mostly pretty chill, there's also an interesting potential tension there especially tied to them both being so much engaged in the idea of being a "warrior", with inner and outer strength, pride, and masculinity - but not in the combative way that Zoro and Sanji have. -That being said, I also think Usopp/Sanji/Zoro makes for a spicy yet ultimately functional three-way-ship.
With Nami: they are just such good buddies and they're easily tactile and it's not that hard for me to see them in a more physical and sensual light. Nami generally doesn't seem to be into dudes but I can see Usopp as her one exception. ...Except I also like both Luffy/Nami/Usopp and Sanji/Nami/Usopp! Look, Usopp is just so great for OT3 ships. With Sanji: it can easily be seen as bros with benefits, but they also both have a romantic side in common, even as they're both heteronormative enough to have assumed that romantic side will be directed towards women. Sanji/Usopp can have a delicious yearning undertone, whether mutually or not. With Robin: here the maturity gap might be just a bit too big (I'm not thinking so much in number of years, more in personality types) but there are still ways I can see them working together. Even more than Robin/Usopp separately, though, I think Franky/Robin/Usopp would be a delightful OT3. With Franky: despite Franky being older than Robin in years, he's got more childish sides to him and I don't feel as much of a maturity gap with him. Him and Usopp have a number of things in common and they hang out a lot. And one more OT3 I've seen in the wild is Franky/Zoro/Usopp which I also think would be a fine ship! (Incidentally, putting Usopp at the end of most of these shipnames here doesn't say anything about my headcanons for sex preferences, it's just a random way of writing the shipnames. Personally I see Usopp as a switch, most of the Strawhats as switches, and Zoro as a bottom. But I'm totally on board with other interpretations too!) Then Kaya of course is the one with the canon shiptease and I think has a pretty good chance of becoming canon at the end. I like the ship - but only if either Usopp is willing to settle down for at least ten years or so on an island and stay put, or Kaya is healthy enough to sail with adventures as a shipdoctor with Usopp. I don't want Usopp to be an absentee husband and father like Yasopp was. I was going to go on naming other ships but if you haven't read or watched much of One Piece I'm not sure if they would mean much to you. Summing up, I think the one caveat with shipping Usopp is that he's pretty young in years and while he's seen and experienced lots of things on their journey, he's still not the most mature character out there. So for these reasons many people in the One Piece world might not be into him. Of course there could be other reasons he wouldn't be their type too. Obviously he's not conventionally handsome or consistently fearless and confident! But many of Usopp's qualities are on the social and emotional side and the way he's a tactile dude with flexible personal boundaries means he's easy to ship all over the place, in my eyes!

long ramble, haven't had one of these in a while! if you read this, have fun. it's headcanons/thoughts on some stuff. i don't talk about my thoughts on story stuff publicly much anymore especially because 1) i'm shy 2) trust issues 3) bad rsd 4) i forgot the last point
i was writing for oNCE yesterday (some headcanon stuff, for myself, won't be posting that unless i change the wording of some of it to make more sense because i ramble a lot and it's a mess. like i am doing right now. also that turned into being mostly about hr in the end because i am ill. now hopefully this motivation will get me to write my mary and archie stuff.)
and when i went to bed i was thinking about some stuff in toontown, mostly the cogs - and how things work. these are things i ponder on very often and have talked about with my friends many time, throwing ideas back and forth and my headcanons for how things work.
though, there's one thing i really wonder about, and that's where cogs come from in ttcc exactly. in 'that' way though of course to keep things on the same rating as the game is i won't discuss anything explicit so don't worry. (besides they're robots and also are sexless to me, anything related to gender is purely cosmetic to them. you are usually assigned a certain expression when built though, but can change that later on. that's how i explain trans cogs.)
i think about how there are canonical families and children, and that they have "built" dates and places where they've been built. it's obvious as they're robots, they're not born they're built and made.
it's a bit difficult to explore with the limited info we have, which is kind of both an hassle to work with, but also beautiful because you can let your creativity go and make up your own headcanons, without things being set in too much canon. it's also difficult due to how different the suit culture is to us humans and also what we see from the toons which is by nature more familiar to us.
we also do not know much about suitopia, or other possible places where cogs live.
(i, personally, imagine suitopia as essentially a big country where most if not all cogs live. it has it's own regions, cities... all that. where as c.o.g.s. inc has built itself to be essentially it's own small country/community, if that makes sense. though cogs don't always only mention suitopia, at least once 'the whole world' is used. this is irrelevant tho so i won't discuss that but it's still a 'core' headcanon i have - as other things i may hc rely on this personal interpretation / headcanon.
but be aware i do not know everything is canon and can discuss things outside my realm of HCs and interpretations, but if i go deeper into like, let's say, analyzing a cog and imagining their backstory, instantly assume i'm using all these things. sorry for the side ramble, i want to make things clear for possible future reference.)
i wish it will be expanded upon slightly in the future, even a slightest crumb of what it's like out there and i can have a field day with it. i do enjoy the vagueness tho, again, as i've said we do not need to have all the information out there and it's not necessary to the main stories that are being told but MAN my brain itches for MORE. i demand EXPLANATIONS. and so i make up my own lol and i love that i can do that /gen (there's some stuff i do have an issue with that it was not explained better, but again, fixed that with hcs. talking abt atticus but im not getting into that rn)
there also may be things i am missing - i have known of ttcc's existence since it's early days, but i wasn't there for it and missed being there in person for any lore until i started playing for real in early 2023 and became a part of the community. like, there ARE things i have missed AND small details i am missing. that's one criticism i have about some info being more difficult to access now, but the main stuff is on the wiki an all luckily.
anyways that ramble out of the way... how the heck are cogs made? there's a few ways, that seem contradictory in some ways at first but i just see it as different methods.
we know cogs can change their appearances (their shell) and be "upgraded". we know cogs can even choose to be just their skelecogs (Atticus) and i suppose every other skelecog we see.) we know cogs have families and have their own kids. (cathal and bobby jr come to mind, and also belle's own kids and grandkids. not to mention, we have siblings too - thomas and robert. and their whole family drama DOES involve their unseen parents.) we know many cogs, mostly the managers, come into the company as their are - but also new parts are built, at least for the employee cogs in sellbot hq. (recently re-read the dialogue which confirmed this - literally as you're building your sellbot suit.)
we know cogs are more than just some working machines and do have deeper lives and desires and even relationships, though all instances of a parent/child relationship in ttcc have only one parent. makes sense after all they don't reproduce sexually to put it that way, again they're built and they're robots.)
it's easy to conclude, that, cogs are just built. which is true. but it just makes me wonder. we know they age. we have at least 1 cog who is a literal child, and bobby, in human years at least, looks no older than like, 8 years old. (we also don't know how cogs age. we also know cog's don't die like that, due to the whole deal with atticus. i will talk about this one day i have so many thoughts on it)
we know they grow up and even have schools - they're not programmed with everything. they earn experience as they live life and even have?? education systems? like they're more like people than we thought. (ttcc does make cogs more easily sympathized with and gives us INDIVIDUAL cogs and not just... 'The Cogs'. cogs are the focus of ttcc so of course they're developed more and are more 'human' despite being machines.)
so clearly, there's cogs like bobby. who are built young and eventually grow up. we have not seen a cog growing up yet, at least i don't think. but i wonder how that works. through cartoon logic, do they just grow up? their skelecog and perhaps their shell, too? or do they periodically get upgraded to be larger - wouldn't it make sense to built a cog as, well, an adult already? to program all these things? there may be more limits to this than we think, but also just... cultural things possibly.
the only cog CHILD (not just the child of someone - cathal's an adult. also, redd mention, but redd's adopted so he doesn't count) we ever see is bobby and, he is the child of robert, who is known to be very short. we don't know if bobby's going to grow up, or if this height is what he's just going to be like. we have one image where he's way smaller than robert, and other, more recent ones, where they're a similar heights. is that just art inconsistency due to the nature of all the (amazing) artwork being, well, volounteer work and that not everything is (or has to be) perfect? or did bobby really grow up. i'm talking about the wallet picture and the comics featuring bobby, by the way.
though, as things are, i'm sort of assuming that bobby's going to grow up or be upgraded in some way to "grow up"? i don't think we need an clear explanation for that, and in a universe like this 'cartoon logic' would be enough, but it's still something to think about.
like...how do cogs go about having kids, anyways? all instances we see are visually similar as well. cathal has the same gear for his neck as allan's body does, and they have the same head lightbulbs and wires. bobby jr and robert are both furniture.
i've always assumed that it's like in robots (the movie, that i havent watched in years which would be helpful for all this, probably.) if you decide to have a child just for the experience of raising a child, to have a legacy, or due to a bond with a partner - you literally just build one. perhaps not in the same way as in the movie - in here it definitely requires more paperwork and blueprints. but again, it's interesting to think about! hey company i want a CHILD. i look like this build them like me thanks here's some blueprints. (this also explains the amount of single parents. though belle has to have been married/is married as her honorific is listed as mrs. hey fun fact, non native english speaker here. i didnt know 'mrs' means a lady is married until like this year. i've been on this earth for 19 years.)
like the concept of family is possibly just more social there than anything. duh... can't exactly have the same oil and wires inside of you as Robots .
anyways, so that explains kids... but what about the others? some cogs don't have any families mentioned but it's not hard to assume they come from families with parents and siblings as well. what about the employee cogs? who are quite literally very disposable in a way?
we do have to take into account that after all, employee cogs we see just on and about on the streets are mostly a game mechanic, and there are some individual cogs who ARE cogs who would typically be employees cogs. (jennifer comes to mind first, she's a micromanager but also a secretary and counts as a manager. same goes for judy and so forth.)
and y'know, the game won't have a personality and backstory for each random flunky on the streets you fight. but with often they get destroyed and repaired and that there's just... so many of them! of the same model and appearance... makes you think. is that why they were made? are they truly more robotic than the others, more devoid of 'humanity'? or were they different cogs, perhaps more lower class, who's appearances were changed entirely to fit into more easily fixable and replaceable shell forms? something that's less expensive for the company and for them? i swear i am missing some details on this, but that's for me to re read the wiki and cogs ink for on my own later. (i need to have full info n everything and if i dont bring up that i know one small detail i will explode bc someone will bring it up and make me feel dumb and that's the rsd part and it's often physically painful!)
very hard to tell, i'm sort of content with my thoughts on how cogs have kids, but i hope we ever get a bit more clarity on employee cogs - though it is a bit problematic as these are the guys you beat up on the daily who don't have individual personalities.
like i'm just rambling as i go here man, it was gonna be cohesive but i'm just spitting thoughts here now. like, we have 3 seperate skelecog types - all cogs come with a skelecog like we have a skeleton so that also comes into play. it can be adjusted in ways, most notably the head and also in size. though we do have a 4 arm cog. jason please i love you /p we need more jason content. it's wacky, it's tacky - it's toontown!
fun stuff to think about but i just deep fried my brain. tdlr i guess.
how cogs made. how cogs have kids. how cogs work in general. very swag very cool. guzma cathal spades spamtongender goes on 1568854 different tangents while saying they wont aka your swagesty your adhd symptoms are showing
that's it fellas enjoy 2k words of incomprehensible rambles that i am happy to finally get out! you see the way i explain things is precisely why i almost never do it publicly and i need practice shortening things.

…Can you tell where my interest lies?
So um. I did a silly I saw ages ago and had been meaning to do.
Also just as an FYI - By the NOtp category - I don’t actively hate any of the ships, it’s more I’m personally not keen on them.
Though lets be real the Town of Salem is the equivalent of playing dolls with how little is canon like. I could deadass see a lot of the platonic dynamics being romantic to some degree. Heck you can absolutely make my NOtps work and I would be like “That is some good stuff” /gen
There’s probably way more I forgot, or just didn’t mention but. This is just for fun, and if you want to yell at me in my ask box regarding my takes, please feel free. Or if you want more rambles I guess! Or ramble at me, why not?
Also - I hope to god I didn’t mess up any icons, I am. Old. Anyway, further commentary underneath, I am sorry.

THE AMOUNT OF SHIT I HAVE FOR THE MAFIA HELP-
ANYWAY All the mafia are pretty closeknit w/ each other, though I like to think there’s a split between the “older” members (Godfather, Consigliere, Hypnotist, Blackmailer) and the “younger” members (Consort, Janitor, Forger, Disguiser and Framer). The Mafioso is kinda split between the middle, getting along with both sides. Ambusher came much later to the mafia and as such is also kinda caught in these disagreements between the two sides. Also I say younger and older very vaguely.
Blackmailer is very rarely seen, even by the mafia. Everyone in the mafia completely trusts them though, especially since they have dirt on everyone. They’re treated like some entity that you ABSOLUTELY do not want to piss off and the Blackmailer takes pride in that they are probably the most terrifying thing. Purely because they know your internet history. Do not question how they got that information.
Mafioso/Ambusher is a funny dynamic. I like to think they constantly try to one up each other, trying to impress the Godfather.
The Ambusher used to be the Survivor, but ended up befriending the Mafioso. They both bond over the whole “yeah I really don’t know where my place is in all of… this.” And because of their friendship, the Survivor learns to calm themselves and not get so panicky, whilst the Mafioso opens up a bit more and tries to not be. As much of a mindless drone. Survivor ends up getting too comfortable and joins the mafia.
The Mafioso is sick of the Framer’s shit. Framer is a little shit. They don’t know what they’re doing wrong, but it annoys the Mafioso regardless.
Godfather and Mayor are brothers. Or, at least related to some degree.
Please know I die for the Consigliere/Godfather dynamic just. Boss and assistant who place so much fucking trust into each other and would probably die for each other. Whether you interpret them as being lovers or friends is up to you, though I can take it. Either way - it really depends on the characters.
HOW THE FUCK DID I FORGET CONSORT/CONSIGLIERE AS BESTIES DANG IT ME- WELL OKAY. They’re either at each other’s throats, or they’re besties. It’s a gamble ngl. I personally headcanon that the mafia has two Consiglieres (Card game and In game) and the Consort would throttle the Card Game bc he’s “so self absorbed” but adores the In game consigliere and would spoil her.
Furthermore, In game consigliere declares herself as the Mafioso’s right hand gal. He plays along, but would never actually trust her as his right hand gal her due to her being incredibly bias and emotionally driven. He would gladly trust the card game though (his boss already does), even if they have numerous disagreements with how to handle the whole dynamic.
Consort/Forger is the mean bisexual, even meaner lesbian dynamic. You can guess whose who. They are both girlbosses and will chat shit about you.
Disguiser is the Hypnotists son. They have a pretty strained relationship thanks to Hypnotism bullshit. Why else do you think Disguiser always wears a mask?
(Also stupider headcanon - but Disguiser is actually the Mafioso from the card game. I have no reason to believe this really I just like card game mafioso’s design and wanted a reason to acknowledge his existence.)
The entire Coven and Mafia get into petty fights. I say petty its more “jfc we helped the witch and now you wanna kill us?” “You guys are literally criminals and also why are you in salem?” “TIME TRAVEL FUCKERY THAT YOU DID” “THEN TIME TRAVEL BACK DIPSHIT-“ “THATS YOUR ISSUE” “OH IS IT NOW?”
The town and neutrals probably just. Watch these two go at it in awe. It gets more and more unhinged.
“MISTER MAYOR! THE LESBIANS AND THE ITALIANS ARE FIGHTING AGAIN!”
For some reason Disguiser is close with the coven though. Why else do you think the Coven got the Disguiser during the traitors era?
Speaking of the Coven. They are lesbians. I do not know what impact this has on the lore, but I feel that is important to mention. Are they dating? Just friends? You decide!
Legit they all. Appreciate each other very much. You mess with one of them you mess with all of them.
Survivor/Amensiac/Medium are all besties who are basically the bystanders in the Town’s BS. Medium is kinda obligated to stay with the town, but would genuinely consider leaving.
Plaguebearer adopts the Jester. Plaguebearer also gets possessed by Pestilence when everyone gets infected. I like to think Pestilence hops out every now and again, and Jester doesn’t know how to react.
The Spy, Tracker and Trapper are all related to each other. They are rarely seen apart and probably all work together on Town Surveillance. Spy and Tracker mainly, Trapper is just making sure the right people are protected.
I’m a firm believer of “The Consigliere and Investigator used to be friends but then mafia and now they are. Conflicted!”
Speaking of “Conflicted!” the Sheriff and Investigator have a similar issue, but that’s not the mafia’s fault, that’s the “they are both stubborn little shits and refuse to let the other investigate how they want” ‘s fault.
The Consort constantly teases the Vigilante. The Vigilante does not know what to do with this information.
Skarso is too iconic. I feel like they would probably kill each other, but because the community wants them to kiss I’m just like “gdi”. Would anything of substance come from them? I personally don’t think so but at this point they’re so iconic I have to respect it.
I’m just saying but………… Town of Salem Mafioso……………. Sir……………………………… 🥺
