The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! Review
Tumblr media
In recent years, demons have graced TV screens, from Vivienne Medrano’s two interrelated web series, Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, to Castlevania on Netflix, and are set to premiere in the upcoming series Satina and Far-Fetched. One such series brings this to the fore: a funny slice-of-life Japanese anime series named The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, which is airing on Japanese television networks and airing on the streaming service Crunchyroll.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs, my History Hermann WordPress blog on Jan. 11, 2023, and Wayback Machine. This was the fifth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on October 13, 2021. I used some images in this article which wouldn't have been allowed on The Geekiary, like the second image specifically, as they are a bit prudish.
This anime series is based on a manga by Wakame Konbu, seven volumes of which have been published, three of which have been released in English. As a big fan of Helluva Boss, Hazbin Hotel, RWBY (with its elements of horror), the space fantasy Final Space, or Disenchantment, which has a demon named Luci, this series, with some mature themes, drew me in from the time I watched a clip on the Crunchyroll YouTube channel. While I watched many anime before, this one seemed unique in its own way and pulled me in with its situational comedy,  which has a key role in the plot, whether from the actions taken by the protagonist or the funny situations she comes across every day.
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! begins with Jahy, a beautiful and powerful brown-skinned demon, voiced by Naomi Ōzora, who has been thrown into the human world, stripped of her power and privilege, after the Magical Girl smashes a huge mana crystal, source of her power into thousands of pieces. Unlike in her previous world, where she was the second-in-command of the Dark Realm, with everyone at her beck and call, in the human world she is destitute. She is living in a run-down apartment, for which she refuses to pay rent, and works at a local pub, run by her the sister of her landlord, Ryou, as a waitress, as a literal wage slave. Due to her loss of power, she can only remain in her “true” adult form, wearing an outfit that makes her less than half-clothed but shows off her physical features, for a short period of time. As such, she spends most of her time in the body of a young elementary-school-age kid, only wearing a ratty white shirt. But she is not sexualized, and neither is any other character on the show’s cast unlike other anime.
Tumblr media
The 20-episode first season of The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! began on August 1, and it is currently more than halfway through its order. It starts with Jahy beginning her search for mana crystals, is helped by humans like the manager of the pub where she works or a young girl named Kokoro, and comes across a bigger mana crystal. Saurva, a tomboyish girl who wants to push Jahy from her role, but ends up improving her reputation instead, Jahy catches a cold, with her manager looking after her, and Ryou calls the police on the real Magical Girl, not the man who had been cosplaying as one. In following episodes, the Magical Girl snatches Jahy’s huge mana crystal resulting in Jahy getting drunk that night. Following this, Jahy gets into an exercise routine, goes to a public bath with her manager and Ryou, accidentally traps herself inside her apartment by setting traps for the Magical Girl, and Jahy learns that the Magical Girl wishes to destroy all the mana crystals so people can be saved from misfortune, a goal which horrifies Jahy.
The show excels at subverting anime tropes, like a master-servant relationship, or themes within the magical girl genre. In terms of the former, Jahy’s former lieutenant, Druj, is very successful at exploiting humans through her role as a corporate executive and lives in a high-end apartment. Embarrassed that her former subordinate is now doing better than her, she is jealous, attempting to hide her true living situation, where she is living poor and destitute. In the case of the latter, the Magical Girl appears to be a jerk at first and is shown in a negative light so the audience empathizes with Jahy, despite the terrible acts she had committed in the past. The show, similar to Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and Villainous/Villanos, encourages the audience to root for the “villain” rather than the “hero.”
Although the magical girl genre has been lampooned in series like Magical Girl Friendship Squad in the past, this is the first anime series I have seen that does the same to the genre, although not the same as the surrealist 2001 original video animation titled Puni Puni Poemy. In the case of The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated!, the Magical Girl and Jahy both have their own transformation sequences of sorts, with Jahy able to transform from her childlike form into an adult form, and the Magical Girl going from her form as a high school girl named Kyouko Jingu to a magical girl, making the series, in this sense, resemble the magical girl genre.
Tumblr media
If The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! is renewed for a second season, it will hopefully encourage more to lampoon the magical girl genre. For one, the series could confirm that there are LGBTQ characters in the series which are in the main cast, rather than having those who appear in only one episode like Theoda and Pothina in one episode of Cleopatra in Space or the recurring character, Xochi Jalapeno, in a number of episodes of Victor and Valentino. Even if this doesn’t happen in a second season, the show still shines through with its animation, voice acting, writing, and hilarity, unlike others that are airing, especially when it comes to animation. It also shares characteristics with other series in that Jahy herself has an identity crisis, trying to discover who she is as a demon in the human world.
In the end, the series is exciting and fun to watch, especially with Jahy’s vigor and ambition. It is something that everyone should watch, despite its mature themes and very rare fan service.
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! is available on Crunchyroll for streaming.

This is the same op. The same post. Just edited.
I entered the notes expecting a TERF block list, but I was instead greeted with thousands of accepting and understanding queer people echoing the initial statement. Butch lesbians loving being called 'boyfriends', casual women enjoying "dude," or "bro," or "man," people embracing he/him lesbians, an abundance of love for drag kings, and people being incredibly supportive of gnc and genderfluid people.
But the edited post. Is TERF bait.
Like, taking it at the value that it's at (we should hate men because they can fuck with gender but we can't) is outrageously hypocritical??
Misandry (a predjudice/hatred of men and masculinity mirroring that of misogny) is not going to solve the demonization of masculinity within the queer community- which is a large part of WHERE the issue originates. The queer community and the non-queer community have two vastly different divides (which is important when considering the 'legitimacy' around discussions concerning misandry)
The reason [non queers] push or accept femininity in gay men is because of misogny, because it allows them to push a homophobic stereotype of gay men being 'basically women' and therefore [basically (lower than) men]. Gay men reclaim this stereotype by embracing said femininity, but that does not exempt them from the misogyny that they face as gay or gnc men*.
Because of that misogyny outside of the queer community, the people who use femininity to demonize gay men are appalled by the idea of using masculinity to empower queer women.
If this were the standard case within the LGBT community, it would already be rectified by the very people who have claimed to create a community haven.
But it's not.
Because the LGBT community has created a reactionary space based on the same principals that demonized them, but in reverse.
The reason that LGBT people aren't accepting of he/him butches or drag kings or masculine gnc women is because a large part of them has pushed out that masculinity and created a stereotype of femininity being the epitome of comfort and queerness. Gay women who attempt to co-opt any sort of masculinity are demonized by the (fear) of [the patriarchy] in the form of men, and their femaleness does not exempt them from the bioexistentialist misandry that has been birthed of TERF ideology*.
Because of, what's boiled down to radical reverse misogyny (which leads to reactionary misandry), the people who use femininity to (humble) and claim gay men as "safe" via are appalled by their very own Peak Of Goodness (women who are Pure and Good, who Only Love women who are Good and Pure) co-opting the very thing they have claimed to build a haven from.
(*It's the same principle in reverse. Feminine gay men still experience misogny, and masculine gay women still experience misandry. There is no predjudice that ONLY harms it's attempted target. Ergo: misandry would NOT help gay women who want to act masculine or to be a man.)
Misandry and butch lesbians cannot coexist. Misandry is the thing that gets trans women assaulted in women's bathrooms. Misandry is the thing that gets transmasc nonbinary people turned away at the door to queer spaces. Misandry is the thing teaching young lesbians to parrot "All men suck," like 'Polly wants a cracker'- because wild concept. Women- espeically wlw- who don't like men. Won't be welcoming and accepting of people like them (women (who love women)) co-opting the language of the people they hate.

Buttercup, from The Powerpuff Girls (1998)
"Buttercup is the Powerpuff Girl with attitude and a volcanic temper. There’s nothing she likes better than getting to grips with her enemies and is often frustrated when she is held back by Blossom and Bubbles. She secretly feels she should be their leader.
She is very ‘Zen’ and disciplined and battles against a constant demon, that of being seen as girlish! The ultimate tomboy, Buttercup’s philosophy is to hit first and ask questions later.
Although this attitude makes her the most courageous of the girls it can also backfire making her, her own worst enemy. But don’t let the hard exterior fool you, beneath it all she is just a little girl."
1. What do you think of school?
Buttercup: I don’t.
2. What do you think of evil?
Buttercup: Keeps me busy.
3. What do you want?
Buttercup: To leave.
4. What do you hate?
Buttercup: Evil.
5. What do you love?
Buttercup: Fighting.
6. What would you do with a million dollars?
Buttercup: Wait for someone to steal it so I could beat them up.
7. Do you know the alphabet?
Buttercup: You callin' me stupid.
8. Do you watch TV?
Buttercup: Duh, cartoons!
9. When not saving the world, what do you do?
Buttercup: Look for fights.
10. What would you do if you didn't have superpowers?
Buttercup: What would you do if I shoved that tape recorder up your nose?

How about some Yandere Hercules, Thor, Ares, Lu Bu, Rudra, Hades, Qin Shi Huang and Apollo x Hiyori Reader (Leodonis’ Daughter) where she just straight up BITCH SLAPS Apollo for insulting her father
She refuses to back down or bow her head for forgiveness because “I’m a Spartan’s Daughter, I will never back down! Especially when I know I’m Right!”
Underneath her cold, flirtatious and ‘vain’ exterior is a brave, compassionate and selfless woman who cares deeply for others, as she would manipulate any cruel and evil Gods, Humans and Demons with her irresistible beauty for their valuables and power until they have nothing left and give it all up to the people to live better lives
She loves and admires her Father deeply, and won’t tolerate anyone disrespecting him, as she has a high moral code, as her father was a brave and strong man (As she’s a total Daddy’s Girl, even showing her childish and tomboy side when he’s around *As she also tried to drop kick him, one of the moves he taught her for self defense, which he’ll laugh about since he’s glad she can at least defend herself*)
Leodonis is also on the floor cackling after hearing his daughter slap the hell out of Apollo (As her hand print is clear for everyone to see on his face)
-Leonidas couldn’t breathe, death was fast approaching as he held his stomach, never had his abs hurt like this before, even after years of intense workout or even getting stabbed.
-Before him stood a glorious scene, his daughter, who looked like an angel, delicate and soft, was standing over Apollo, who had just got bitch slapped right across the teeth, “I am a daughter of Sparta, worm, and if you insult it’s king, you insult me. And nobody insults Sparta.”
-Apollo was bringing it on himself technically, as the others around you could vouch for, as Apollo was trying to flirt with you, telling you how beautiful you looked and that he couldn’t understand how someone so crash and vulgar could be the father of such an angel.
-You were normally very level-headed and calm, but your papa was your soft spot, even if you would deny it, acting shy about it, you wouldn’t hesitate to throw hands to defend your papa, even though he could do it himself.
-You were known as quite the heartbreaker around Valhalla, but your targets were always cruel people, cruel gods and humans, and you would use your looks and never-ending charm to get in a good position with them, only to rob them blind.
-Many called you a villain and many tried to get you arrested for your crimes, but there were many more who would defend you, as everything you stole, goods, money, food, clothes, and you would always give it to those who needed it but didn’t have it, mainly because those you stole from had taken it or horded it, not distributing it like they were told to do.
-When the investigation was launched, you were actually thanked by so many high ranking gods for finding these thieves, who were punished instead. Many begged you for mercy, but you were cold and unforgiving, “I have no mercy to give to those who deserve none.”
-Many thought your icy nature was alluring, wanting to get to know you in a romantic sense, but in a serious romance, not your typical ones.
-You were always hesitant on making an actual relationship with someone, as you were afraid they would find out about your past exploits and what you’ve done, and you didn’t want to be deemed a loose woman.
-Leonidas would defend you, even if you told him you didn’t need his him, kicking his butt with your foot, telling him to leave, only to make him laugh while others would see your slight tomboy side.
-However, there were times like this where you easily showed your papa and anyone around you, that you were indeed a daughter of Sparta, and the daughter of the king, and you were not to be underestimated by any means.
-Many around were in shock, stunned with wide eyes but at the same time, they were admiring you, you took no disrespect and you slapped a god to the floor, not caring in the slightest that it was done in front of witnesses.
-Holy moly that was HOT!! He couldn’t believe his eyes to watch Apollo flirting with you, the object of his own affections, and then insult your father, and the next thing the sound of a slap is ringing around and Apollo is on the ground, a pulsing red imprint of a hand on his cheek as he lay twitching on the ground. Immediately approached you, asking if you were okay, taking your hand in his own, holding it gently; he was careful because he didn’t want a matching handprint on his own face. You felt your face warm as he held your hand so gently, massaging the palm gently, making sure you didn’t hurt yourself while praising you for making it look so easy. Leonidas couldn’t help but grin, seeing you acting so shy with soft affection, you were so cute!
-Ares, Hades, Hercules, and Qin Shi Huang
-Was in awe, seeing you dispatch a god so easily and with just a slap across the face. It made him curious on how hard you actually hit Apollo. It also made him curious on how strong you actually were; it wasn’t everyday where a woman could drop a god with one hit. Picked you up when you started getting a little feistier then you probably needed to be, wanting to yell at Apollo some more, and they were worried that Leonidas really was going to die from laughing so hard. He was surprised when you went silent, being held princess style before your face immediately went red and you started to push on his face, demanding to be let down. This was an unexpected but enjoyable surprise, seeing you so shy from being treated like a maiden. Leonidas couldn’t help but grin, wiping the tears from his eyes, he knew you could handle yourself, but if you came to him, he had no issues putting someone in their place.
            -Lu Bu, Rudra, and Thor
-Stars in his eyes, birds circling his head, and ringing in his ears were all he could recall. He had been speaking to you but had realized, after you disciplined him, that he must have said something rude to you. Could see you glaring down at him, chewing him out but couldn’t hear anything but ringing. You were the whole package, beauty and strength, just like him, and he knew, being a daughter of Sparta, you could handle yourself, you were just like him! He couldn’t help but smile up at you as he became more coherent, hearing Leonidas nearby laughing loudly as well as many others laughing at his misfortune. Apollo beamed up at you, adoration in his eyes as he had never met a woman like you before, “Marry me!” Everyone went silent, completely stunned by the question, however it was your reaction that got more attention as you immediately flushed, holding your cheeks, “What are you saying?! Did I scramble your brains?!” before rushing to your father who was now standing, moving to hide behind him, however, seeing you so shy made Apollo fall even more in love. Now he just needed to convince Leonidas.
-Apollo

Honestly why even bother making Jason afrolatino if you're not gonna write him as he is in canon when that's what actually'd make him work good rep for us.What i mean by this is
His ego is huge,he's super tough and an edgelord, has anger issues and brutal ass tactics and is a morally gray vigilante but he's ALSO a huge woman respecter to the point he thinks they're better than men,is extremely kind with a huge soft side and his exterior attitude and Red Hood are trauma responses that're framed as valid on his end so he's not the 'Scary Black Man' stereotype and with the exception of the vigilante part this is actually a pretty common personality type for irl black men-Important note that i don't fall under the attitude but i AM a black man(and woman)
He's been a huge nerd since he's debut in both meanings of it-He's a genius who was a star student in school and loves classical literature, theater and speaking articulately and poetically but just happens not to 24/7 since he's a comic book character, not a Shakespearen one
And his soft sunshine boy with hidden depths Robin self is a critical part of making him as black latino work-You can't go with the retcon of him as a mini thug because it's extremely dangerous stereotyping
Duke as his favorite brother-It's erasure with white gringo Jason but even worse and just stupid because both of them being black would it EVEN BETTER writing they're eachother's number one Batboy pick.Ain't no nigga picking Tim when the only other black guy in the factor is Right There and fuck ya aus, keep Jason white in them and leave afrolatino Jason out of your mess
He hasn't expressed a particular preference for girls he likes but HAS for the ones he dosen't and it's preppy perfect judgemental ones who try to 'tame' him so rip all y'all's white X Readers LMFAO.Worth noting that his canon girlfriends have been a half cambodian tomboy(Rose),an edgyptian butch(Artemis)and a darkskin black woman(Dana)and that he's actively rejected a white blonde girl on the basis of her being too normal(Isabel)and Kory post deblackification so i think it's obvious where his tastes lie
You CANNOT make him and Roy or Batcest a thing-I don't think i need to explain why pairing up a white man who knew an afrolatino since he was 14 and him grown with a daughter and putting him in incest is violently antiblack
Poverty is not inherently bad in black or latino characters and there was a point in canon where it was used as simply an element in Jason's story instead of demonization so use that edition. But making him a drunkard,a smoker or a sex fiend is 100% perpetuating stereotypes and he's canonically the opposite of all three so again, sometimes things that are canon are better
Him being tall and super jacked and intimidating looking can actually enchance it-He uses it to his advantage to get people he dosen't like to fuck off because they buy into the propaganda and gives him more deepness with the rest of his personality
This includes him being a real gamer and his neapolitan food addiction and your headcanons on his other tastes should follow their lead-His favorite characters should be black and latino ones(His favorite Marvel hero is Miles Morales,it's canon to ME),he should listen to black and latino artists,he should eat black and latino food and know how to make it for that matter, etc
Back to a Duke situation-You also can't make a white woman instead of Talia his adoptive mom for obvious reasons and imo if you're gonna make him and Stephanie besties, she should be black too for that black best friends and found siblings rep(She works as a black woman as much as he does a black man and i'll make a manifesto of that like i did him if asked). This applies to the Team Dad Jason take too in the sense that he should mentoring Damian and Nell and Tiffany since they're Batgirls instead of white kids
In summary what i'm trying to say is:If you're going to see Jason as an afrolatino man,you need to go beyond just the aesthetic and little bits you feel like including because you think they're appealing and actually write him as an afrolatino man,as Jason Todd and not some random guy
@nogender-onlystars @willieoo @mayameanderings @desi-pluto @insomniac-jay @vulnonapixes-dc-corner
