I support both Arthur loving Merlin as well as Arthur loving Gwen because holy shit Gwen was awesome.

I’m rewatching Season 5 episode 13 (as one does), and though Gwen does many cool things here, (ruling/taking over the kingdom, tending to wounded on the front lines etc.) the one that sticks in my head is this:

GWEN FIGURES OUT MERLIN WAS THE SORCERER WHO HELPED THEM!

And then…

And then!

SHE ASKS FOR CONFIRMATION IN THE MOST ROUNDABOUT AND NONTHREATENING WAY POSSIBLE!

To protect them!

She knows she’s still ruled by the existing laws here. So she doesn’t let Gaius incriminate himself for knowing Merlin is a sorcerer, or incriminate Merlin as being a sorcerer! And she only asks for her peace of mind because her HUSBAND is dying.

I think, in fact, that Gwen is the ONLY person in the whole show who guessed Merlin had magic without actually seeing him perform magic, or having that fact told to their face. She just… figured it out. And then wasn’t scared. But was GLAD.

Really random, but I think Touya would have a special connection with his oldest daughter because he is the oldest child of his family, too. He knows the burdens the oldest carries. It's not that he dumped his responsibilities on her. They just happened to be there, assigned to her, the moment the second was born.

He sees so much of herself in her when she holds her younger brother with a wide smile that slowly grows smaller the longer she holds him. She glances at her parents with so much uncertainty, and Touya knows the questions flooding her mind. Will you guys still love me now that I have a baby sibling? Is he going to replace me? Will I be forgotten?

That night, after his wife is asleep, he slips into his daughter's room to find her wide awake in bed, staring at the ceiling. He sits on her bed and holds her into him, reminding her that she is still his baby daughter, that he'll always love her, that nothing will replace her and that her worth hasn't dropped just because she has a sibling now.

Touya tries his best not to let her be burdened with the responsibility of her younger siblings. Yet, as she grows up, he can't help but feel like she's too mature for her age. She doesn't have to play therapist for her siblings and parents. She doesn't have to give out advice like a wise woman. But still, she does.

He knows she has a hard time expressing herself. He knows she breaks down in her room sometimes. He's been there, too. So, every other night, he makes sure to stop by her room and give her a big, long hug. Sometimes, she ends up crying into his shirt, and he lets her. He spends a few extra minutes asking her about her day, letting her ramble her heart out to him because he wishes someone was there for him, just like this several years ago. He might not have gotten to hear the words, but he makes sure his daughter does: "You don't have to change yourself to meet someone's expectations. I love you just the way you are."
