Trying something new this month! I've got five top recs below (most of which are quite long, sorry not sorry), but in an attempt to keep my Pinboard more contemporary I've put all of my January bookmarks up at this tag if you're looking for more to read.

Below are recs for: 9-1-1, The Untamed, Game of Thrones, and The Hobbit. And at Pinboard are more recs for 9-1-1, The Untamed, & The Hobbit, plus Batman, Goblin Emperor, KJ Charles, and Star Wars!

Hot Ghost Problems by ebjameston (9-1-1, Buck/Eddie)

The ghost would prefer to go by Buck, if Eddie wouldn’t mind. Eddie is the newest firefighter at the 118. Buck is the ghost haunting the 118. Unfortunately for both of them, Eddie's also a witch and needs to put Buck's spirit to rest, because that's what witches do. Turns out, Buck's spirit? Super not interested in being put to rest. Very interested, however, in flirting with Firefighter Diaz, who is just trying to survive his candidate year. (Also turns out, Buck? Super not dead.)

I adore this trope, but this one's got great worldbuilding around the magic, and the author is skilled at combining drama and humor. So you've got the emotions and pining but also Eddie's sisters roasting him via group chat, and so on.

Batting a Buck & Change by Daisies_and_Briars (9-1-1, Buck/Eddie)

“Do you remember that shift where Buck was off and Hen was on mandatory relaxation, and they both got drunk in Hen’s kitchen in the middle of the afternoon while we had to resuscitate a canine?” Eddie nods vigorously. “Oh, Hoover. I remember Hoover.” “Why have we never been drunk during a dog resuscitation, Eddie? Have you thought about that?” “Well now I am.” “We should call them and let them know that we can have fun on Dads’ Night Out.” Nothing could go wrong. OR: Eddie and Chim embark on a “Dad’s night out” to watch baseball at a sports bar, and after a few too many, Eddie accidentally lets his feelings for Buck slip.

I am weak for shenanigans and Chimney's keeping-secrets fail - one of his panicked attempts to escape a conversation in this is HYSTERICAL, you'll know the one - and this fic has a top-tier assortment of both, plus a lovely Eddie-Chim friendship/baseball buddies/mutual dad admiration society.

The Pack Survives by astolat (GoT, Robb/everybody)

There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival. —Thornton Wilder

Sprawling AU where the South makes peace and Robb lives - but ends up having to deal with internal rebellion, polyamory negotiation, dragons, and of course, a terrifying army of the dead. Features Robb growing up and making fewer and better mistakes in addition to his usual tactical genius, plus a fantastically sharp Sansa.

Thicker Than Water by athena_crikey (The Untamed, Wangxian)

The Lans were one of the founding families of the Vancouver Guild; part of their legacy is to maintain their place in it for the benefit of all. Cultivation is important, essential, serious. In the distance, something squeaks. A disaster, is Lan Zhan’s first impression as the bike squeals to a halt on the far side of Song Lan’s car. The man riding it – and he’s tall, and lanky, and sure-footed – hops off and locks it to the car’s back door. The back door of a police vehicle. He pulls his helmet off to reveal long, sweat-soaked hair with a shaggy undercut, bright grey eyes, and a smile that launches like an arrow straight through Lan Zhan’s chest. No, he thinks, watching this trainwreck of a man shimmy between the narrow space dividing Song Lan’s back bumper and the next car’s hood like he’s doing some kind of dance step. Absolutely not.

Excellent modern-with-cultivation AU with a gorgeously written Lan Zhan POV - both in terms of the prose and his deep-seated trauma that bubbles up along the way.

A Passion For Mushrooms by Chrononautical (The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin)

There are many trials for a hobbit attempting to make a life among dwarves. A hobbit wants a garden. A hobbit wants to eat regular meals. A hobbit wants friends, good books, and comfortable chairs. Bilbo does his best to carve out a little hobbit life for himself in the mountain. If only there were not one final obstacle. For a hobbit heart wants love, and among dwarves that is a sticky subject.

AKA the one with the mushroom mine, more feelings about guilds than I ever imagined having, and some epic cultural misunderstandings (both romantic and otherwise). I'm very much showing up to this widely recced story 6 years late with Starbucks, but it's got fantastic worldbuilding, humor, and romance.

By George, I'm hooked!

So a short while back, while searching for a fic featuring both human and crup George, I tagged a few people whose works I binged recently in a bid to try to recall the author. Amidst the embarrassing chaos where I tagged three guesses (before I finally found the fic written by a fourth), I figured I’d share what it is about these three authors’ writing that has me engaged so thoroughly and often. And to tie it all in a theme, I’ll drop a rec of their fics that feature George Weasley.

An assortment of delights 💝🍫

@schmem14 masterfully crafts the most delicious and unique ideas. Like a box of mystery-flavour chocolates, trying each one gives a new delightful experience of Em’s stories and interpretations of prompts, plots and pairings. And I find myself reaching for another, and another and another…

I have especially really enjoyed her collections where she takes on themes in her inimitably creative way. I’d really recommend checking out the George ones in her collections too, and for now I’ll leave you with this rec:

@the-francakes' fics are such a vibe. She has me absolutely engrossed in a variety of stories; it really feels like a chill, cinematic experience. I love browsing through each enticing summary (and lovely banner!) of both old favourites and new updates. I’m always happily transported right there in the bubble of the world she’s created, rooting for the characters and absolutely flailing at the gorgeous plot, until I reach the end and float right along to the next one.

I always sink into @orange-peony's fics with the most satisfying feeling. Her fics are a pleasure to enjoy, curled up in bed with “entire work” clicked, squeeing, sobbing, smiling into a pillow. Her fics are always thrilling in their emotional rollercoaster, and never fail to warm my heart and make me just… feel with every fibre of myself. I absolutely love and crave that reading experience.

This fic is a quintessential example of that Peony experience:

George feels a wave of relief washing over him at the thought that he still has time, that he can still get his shit together and stop feeling so utterly broken every single moment of the day, and then maybe he will be good enough for Lee. Sometimes he feels like the pain and the loss have woven through every fibre of his being, that his whole body is made out of grief, raw and wretched beyond repair. But then Lee takes his hand, or he threads his fingers through George’s hair, whispering something that George can only feel against his skin, lost words that make him shudder and reach for Lee, to feel him there and have him close. Real.

Do you have any good recs for obikin fics? (No aus?)

Hi anon! So sorry for the delay 😩 I generally try to be more responsive but have been on vacation with the family and it's been tricky to find tumblr time!

Let me start by saying I may not be the best person to ask for fic recs at the moment, especially if you’re looking for recent work, because I've been devoting more of my free time these last two years to my art and writing than to reading. Also, a large portion of what I have read lately is obikin outside the galaxy far far away, which is not what you’re asking for. Most of my favorites include some element of smut (and accordingly rated M or E), but I tend to gravitate toward the ones that have a lot of feelings to go with it. To keep this manageable, I’m also only including completed works, although I’m invested in many fantastic WIPs.

Anyway, all that said, here are a handful that hopefully meet your criteria and have left lasting impressions on me:

With a Warm and Tender Hand by @temple-mistress (~38K words)

After a harrowing encounter with the enemy, Obi-Wan and Anakin manage to save themselves, but they're left on edge, with raw nerves and shaking hands. While they attempt to treat their physical injuries, the tension between them escalates, until they're forced to deal with the intense feelings they have for each other.

OK this has been around for many many years - I remember reading it on something that was decidedly NOT Ao3, and I’m pretty sure it was my first Obikin fic. It was certainly my most formative, anyway, and it still holds up. I’ve reread it more times than I can count. Sweet, emotional, beautiful dialogue and characterization, lovely description, slow, tender intimacy. The author checked all my boxes with this one!!

Cross-Wired by @himboskywalker (~4K)

In the midst of battle Anakin's prosthesis takes damage and with no backup arm, it's a problem that needs immediate fixing. But crushed durasteel and fritzed wires equals all sorts of curious nerve responses while his master tries to disconnect the neural receptors.

Everything I’ve read by Tag (which unfortunately is not everything she’s written) is top tier, but this lovely little one-shot in particular just stuck with me. The details in her language paint such a vivid picture, and the sexual tension is flawless. I’m also a big fan of her work Invictus, in which the boys go through a bunch of tropes because the Force just wants them to get together, lol. So so good.

...love comes in different forms, and Anakin and Obi-wan were intimate with them all. And in a way, they had always known, always bled into each other until their organs ran in union, lungs and brains working as one. They were the ultimate team, intimate in a way that few people would ever experience. Having grown into men together, survived war together, cried together, laughed together—love was unavoidable, really. But this is not a love story—because it can’t be.

Ok this one is heartbreaking, but in the best way. Unforgettably beautiful. Physical and emotional intimacy written like a poem, balanced with a touch of comic relief. I’ve only read it a couple times because frankly it’s so pretty it hurts, but I can’t leave it off this list because it left such a mark on me.

My Moon After the Tide by LemonTwister (~39K)

After being inflicted with a paralytic toxin, Anakin is unable to care for himself until he recovers. Obi-Wan promises to provide his Padawan with everything he needs.

It’s been quite a while since I read this but this is another one that has stuck with me for years. Again both sweet and hot. It’s a weakness of mine what can I say 🤷‍♀️

Homestead by @jswander and @whohatessand (~46K)

After their failed altercation on Mustafar, Obi-Wan Kenobi secretly stows away with his former Padawan now turned Sith Lord and traitor to the Republic. Or, Obi-Wan deals with a troubled newly widowed Anakin, two twins, and desperately needs a hug.

This was just... god. It was such a great comfort fic for me. The authors here took such great care to weave a story that gives our boys the time they really need to heal after Anakin’s transgressions prior to Mustafar, and I really appreciate the inclusion of the twins as Obi-Wan and Anakin learn how to be together. It is part of a series (the remainder of which I have yet to read but is on my very, very long to-read list).

Swear On It by @dirkygoodness (~7K)

Anakin lets his feet take him a good ways from camp before he actually stops, breathing fast from the memory of his dream. He squeezes his eyes shut tight against it and holds his breath for a moment, trying to get himself under control. Tonight it doesn’t seem to be working, though, because the images of people he knows and loves hurt and bloody and dead just won’t get out of his mind.

A perfect little one-shot where Anakin’s been having bad dreams and Obi-Wan knows it and tries to get him to talk about it. I love the way this author writes Anakin - their dialogue is wonderful the smut is incredible and Anakin’s feelings do All The Things to my heart.

O Trespass Sweetly Urged by @artemisthehuntress (~9K)

Anakin and Obi-Wan witness a sex ritual while on a mission. Obi-Wan doesn't understand why Anakin is so scandalized by this, until Anakin admits that he's never had sex.

Obi-Wan...might need a minute to process that.

Another one shot that has stayed with me long after the first read. Arty is so funny and I love the humor she injects into the dialogue between these two idiots as they fumble their way through their feelings. Sweet and tender, my jam 💜

Good Form by @ranianke (~15K)

Obi-Wan needs help shooting a training video. What could go wrong?

This one has more dom/sub undertones than my other recs, and Obi-Wan is *almost* cruel in the way he teases Anakin, but I had to include this because it is SO well written, the tension is absolutely sublime, and the smut is... so very very hot [blush].

I’m so sorry that’s all I have in me for now, but please know there are SO MANY GOOD OBIKIN FICS and I cannot fit all my love for everyone and their stories into one post. I will say that @gffa periodically pulls together phenomenal fic recs, though, so I would highly recommend visiting those lists for more recent stuff! Lumi is such a treasure to this fandom!

Hey, I just finished Starling House and am trawling the tag, and saw your post where you mentioned it was really obvious where the book got its influences from. I don't disagree but I'm super new to reading anything even a little bit horror (and I'm finding I LOVE gothic horror and old houses full of secrets), so I wondered if you have a rec list of books you felt did the genre better?

Hi hi!!! I honestly forgot I even made that post, but I’m glad you stumbled across it, and thanks for sending in this ask :))

TBh after these intervening months I don’t remember exactly the extent of her copying I had in mind, but I do remember that this book felt to me as though Harrow pitched it to her publisher as Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones meets We Have Always Lived at the Castle by Shirley Jackson. Jones brings the odd couple and the magic, Jackson brings the Americana Gothic. I think the reason for my critique of Harrow was that she failed to capture (only in my opinion, of course! And all this being said, I didn't dislike the book) either the whimsy of Jones or the horror of Jackson, even while trying to invoke both of them. To me, Harrow’s best strengths in the book were her critiques of capitalism and arguments for how history is created/remembered, yet sometimes I felt that theme and trope didn’t always align! Again, just my view, and after reading a few more of this year’s House books, I do think that Starling House was the most masterfully created of them all. This being said, if you enjoy horror vibes with houses, I do recommend The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas's (and her short fiction) and The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi. They're easy romantic reads and kind of rhyme with Starling House.

My personal primer for feminist Gothic fiction (my soapbox is that the genre is specifically feminist and that a lot of authors who try to do "Gothic but with Feminist 101 because those old books gave too much power to the husbands!" are ENTIRELY MISSING THE POINT) is below!

We Have Always Lived at the Castle and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. These probably come closest to what Harrow was doing.

For subtler feminism and more critique of power, I recommend Mexican Gothic by Silva Moreno Garcia and The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter.

For classics, I will always recommend Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte because they do say some radical things about gender for their time period!

15. favourite headcanon of the year- hmmmm. i've been listening to martyn's secret life lore stream so i'm trying to think of things that aren't the mcyt lore i was literally just listening to, and like. trying to remember what fandoms i was even Actively Looking At Stuff For. splat3 came out this year, but all the lore stuff for that that isn't Strictly Canon is like. oc lore, not like headcanons for the games, so i don't think that counts. i got big into a couple hermitcraft folks this year, but i'm still slowly dipping into it? i'm still very new to the fandom side of things so i haven't seen much, it's p much just been limited life and secret life, which isn't even hermitcraft really. redstone and skulk that i just linked prev is actually my first fic for anything hermits that i've read, sooooooooo don't think there's rly anything there i can grab at. oh yeah tears of the kingdom came out! and i still haven't beaten it so i've been avoiding the tags for it for a while now so. out of touch on that one.

...which does actually, to my memory, leave me with the secret life lore stream lkdsghs whICH reminds me!! martyn kinda dismissed the moment where grian clarified mumbo's failed task timed with the end portal opening, but i do like to think that that could've been A Watcher MomentTM so i'll go with that one! that's a headcanon from me!

ten books to know me

The Baby-Sitter's Club book series, by Ann M. Martin I don't know what to tell you, I was hooked on these books as a kid. I used to beg my school library and my local library to stock more of them and I'd always get a new one for Christmas. I even wrote to Scholastic thinking they'd tell Ann M. Martin I was her biggest fan, and in return I got a little note from who probably was their intern at the time, and a free book. My favourite character was Dawn 🍃

Point Horror book series After the Baby-Sitters came the teens tortured by slashers, ghosts, and possessed funhouses. What can I say, I evolved. I loved these books. I might even still have a few knocking about somewhere, but I distinctly remember enjoying The Lifeguard and The Snowman. Which really brought me onto...

Carrie, Stephen King And basically every King book of that ilk. I'm a huge fan. This was the first book I read, I took it out my school library and devoured it in a night. My best friend and I used to call each other without fail every night at 8pm (this is when everyone had landlides) and I remember boring her silly with my gushing over Stephen King (and Buffy and Harry Potter, and eventually fandom).

Drawing Blood, Billy Martin This is still published under Billy's deadname, fyi. DB was the first book of his I read and let me tell you, I was floored. I found out about his work via the good ol' dial up internet/discussion forums when I was trying to find some new queer horror to indulge in. I was into the Vampire Chronicles but it just didn't hit the spot for me back then, you know (I was about 16 and very sheltered). My mum, having no idea what the content of this book was, took me to Waterstones in Edinburgh to buy this and Lost Souls together from the horror section, and from then on I was hooked. Now this is what I call queer horror!! Disturbing, sexy, nasty, emotional, dramatic, it has it all.

Mysterious Skin, Scott Heim I read this book when I was 17 and it blew me away. It's harrowing, horrific, disturbing stuff, and I loved Heim's ability to weave in all these different voices and trauma responses. It's not for everyone. The film is pretty good, too.

Ghost World, Daniel Clowes I love Ghost World so much I have some of it permanently etched onto my skin. Two nihilistic girls against the world and, eventually, against each other as they grow up and grow apart. Oh, and Enid Coleslaw really did inform some of my wardrobe choices as a student.

More Than This, Patrick Ness This book had a profound impact on me when I read it for the first time. I have suffered from thanatophobia on and off for decades, and I'm definitely better about it now than I used to be, but something about this book really comforted me in a time of crisis when I needed it most. I found it incredibly healing.

Captive Prince series, C.S. Pacat To say I am obsessed with this series and the world within it is probably an understatement. I have read and reread these books an embarrassing amount of times, and they're always the comfort I turn to when I need a good distraction from the world around me! Beautifully written and realised, and a central relationship where both characters are flawed, strong, competent, and complex.

The Testament of Gideon Mack, James Robertson My favourite piece of modern literature. Flawless (to me, at least, I understand everyone has different tastes!) from the first page to the last. Bizarre, heartbreaking, funny, and very Scottish. I love the exploration of religion/atheism, mental health, reputation, and the paranormal. This is my desert island book.

The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller This book changed my brain chemistry. To adapt a piece of ancient literature and tell it with such power and stab you in the heart and make you eat it beauty... I just. No words. To me, this is the ultimate love story.

The mouth of it, that wide brick entryway, loomed from a shady copse of fir trees where it sat nestled as if it had grown from the very earth itself – an organic living thing. The dead vines and grubby moss hardly changed at all since she had last seen it and Sarah wondered if there would be fuzzy little worms having tea in the cracks and crevices of it's pillars. Sarah heard it then, the soft voice she had caught only the faintest whispers of as a 15 year old still full of rage and righteousness, but now it spoke clear and crisp in her mind like a lazy river washing over stones. It called to her as it had done the first time but now…now Sarah understood the words.

New Goals!

While writing my dear friend Bethy this morning, I sort of made the decision to scale back and rethink all of my grand plans.

Now, I am a lady who can do a lot. That ADHD + OCD combo can be good for some things, I suppose, especially when properly medicated! Accomplishing a lot makes me feel good and happy and gets me all riled up to do more! What I at times fail to remember is that this energy and focus isn't endless. And my sense of responsibility and perfectionism will mean my doom when I inevitably slow down.

My therapist and I have been working on me recognizing and celebrating what I do accomplish, even when they're not on my "list." I have a bad habit of feeling useless when I did 10 things in a day but none of them were on my "list" or in my "plans" and so I chalk the day up as a failure. It helps me to stop and look and say "Hey! I did that! That is a thing that I did and that's very cool and good of me." And that helps.

But it also helps to recognize when my Brain (also named Brian, per my friend Nina, based on a misreading of a Tweet some months ago, haha!) is getting overexcited and dancing around and adding more and more grand plans to our plate. It also helps to verbalize because, for me, and my dang Leo Moon, I need to share and to be seen and understood.

So while there is plenty I'd like to do, I've narrowed down my goals for the year to 3 pretty solid goals:

Project: Three of Hearts

While the plan is to complete and submit fics for the above fests, my Project is just what I plan to work on in between times. My goal is progress there.

So regarding the above goals, this is where I'm at:

Snarry-a-Thon: Rough Draft & Edit 1 done. Off for beta reading now.

Snarry Bang: teammate chosen and as of yesterday a plan nailed down!

Project: Three of Hearts: Very loose outline. And chapter 1 done! I figured my struggle with the outline might be helped by starting it, to help give me more of a feel for characterization and dynamics. I think it helped because my "vague outline" is starting to feel a bit more solid!

WIPs I would like to make progress on this year, but am refusing to to stress about:

Lavmione fic

Contempt-verse fic (Kinktober?)

Goals I've cut: mostly Year of the OTP. I wrote Again (and Again) and Lovestruck to fill YOTP prompts, but while it seems fun, it's just too much. I have been panicking in the back of my mind about what to do for a March prompt and it's just not worth it. I don't want to feel obligations to finish things out. So I'm going to remove the Year of the OTP tags from those fics and try to forget I ever heard about it. The part of me that must finish everything it starts is deeply unhappy, but I need to scrub away all sense of needing to finish it, so I don't beat myself up when I fail.

The downside is that, with the idea of doing Year of the OTP and posting a new fic every month, I would definitely have reached 100 HP fics this year! I'm ever closer to that goal, but...if not this year, then certainly next year. There's no rush, really. Also: even though the OCD part of my brain rails at this a bit, I should at least celebrate that I do have 100 works on AO3! If we could my astro meta and my old Marvel fics, I'm actually at 103!!!! (Still trying to talk Brian into accepting that win.)

The thing is, I still do a lot, even if I don't get everything I hoped or planned to do done. Other plans for the year include:

More rec lists! (And I've already done rec lists for this year so everything here on out is gravy!)

More general meta (have I done this yet? Who knows. I'm sure I'll feel inspired sometime.)

More HP Astro posts (already done! All else will be bonus!)

2 fests to run! HP Chan will wrap up next Monday, and that same day HP Fruit Fest starts!

Reading and commenting! I've already done that! And I hope to do more!

Learn bookbinding! I still have supplies to gather, but I started doing test prints of short fics to play with programs and typesetting and printing and such. That's a start!

Mostly I just want to be involved in fandom. I want to interact with my community and chat with my friends and meet new friends. I want to give as much to the fandom as I can, in whatever form I can, be it recs or meta or fics or what have you. Or even just fangirling hard on Discord servers! It would be fun to do more podcasts this year (hint hint @careofmagicalshippers and @fanficmaverickpodcast LOL.) Or...idk, what else can I do? Idk, but no stress to me! I'm here to have fun and spread love.

And I need to keep that in mind. And give myself the love of self-care. And focus more on what's fun and what inspires me over how productive I am, or being self-critical.

Do I take fandom too seriously? Mayhaps. But only because I love it so much!

hello! i've been lurking in the biggles ao3 tag for a few months now (because of your glacier rescue fic actually!). and after some time i decided to check out the canon material. so by now i've read probably half? of the books containing evs (most of the ones where he is prominently featured, though none from the WWII time and i won't ever read those if i can help it) and also the short story where marie gets introduced.

but!! now that i've given in to fate and have started writing some biggles fic myself, i've noticed a glaring lack in my bigglesducation when it comes to the other characters (even biggles himself sometimes)! especially bertie is hard for me to get a grip on (also bc i'm not english, so his way of talking is often a big ??? for me lmao). could you maybe recommend some of the books where you feel like the others get their time to shine and their personality comes out noticably? (redirecting me to others' lists on forums or sth is also okay ofc!!)

(also as a bonus some of the more fantastical/horror-ish ones? i seem to remember someone mentioning a giant squid??)

(also also please do not get too excited at the prospect of new biggles fic, i tend to go overboard with my ideas and so most of them never get to see the light of day or even leave their status of wip)

Hello hello! Welcome to the Biggles fandom! ❤️ Whether or not you post anything, I hope you have fun!

@philomytha has some great introductory resources with recommended Biggles books, including a bunch of von Stalhein books and also plenty of ones without him; you can find those posts here:

So I highly recommend checking out those posts, which contain a mix of the EvS books (mostly in the first post) and a variety of other recommended books from the rest of the series, with capsule descriptions - it's a great resource and has guided most of my reading in the series so far; I'm only now starting to branch out into books not mentioned there!

Bertie is hard to write; he's the hardest for me out of the main set (including EvS), and it doesn't help that he's only in about half the series since he first shows up in WWII. Actually, the first story in the collection Spitfire Parade introduces him and is worth reading just for that! (I think you get a really good sense of his personality there.)

As for the introductions of the other main characters, Algy is introduced along with Biggles's early (and uncomplimentary!) impressions of him in a couple of the shorts in The Camels Are Coming, and then Ginger first appears in Biggles and the Black Peril (fortunately not at all ... what it sounds like), which is also just a really fun book on its own with lots of fun action and some nice Biggles-and-Algy interaction as well.

A few of the books that I particularly liked that don't have EvS in them:

Biggles and the Black Peril, mentioned above

Biggles Fails to Return, which is largely focused on Biggles's team trying to rescue him, so you get a good look at their individual personalities and team dynamic without Biggles around. (Although Biggles gets some good bits as well!)

Biggles Takes it Rough (also not what it sounds like), which has some good Bertie moments and is generally a fun book.

Biggles in the Terai is another one that might be good for writing Bertie; it involves Biggles and Bertie working together to look for a missing Algy.

Biggles Sweeps the Desert (WWII era, but no EvS) has good team interactions and a lot of action.

Biggles in the Baltic is, regrettably, one of the WWII books with an evil EvS, so that's a caveat, but otherwise I love it a lot; there's an exciting adventure plot, a secret island base, and a lot of team dynamics.

As for the more over-the-top books with giant squid and so forth, you can find recs for those at Philomytha's posts as well! So far I don't think any of those have turned out to be ones I really loved, which doesn't mean I might not hit one later on that's a favorite, but she's got a few of those listed, and some of the more real-world-based books can also have occasional appearances by Menacing Batshittery as well. (Just FYI, there's also a general tendency for the more batshit books to have more racism as well, since they tend to take place in out-of-the-way corners of the world that Johns doesn't write as well as places closer to home. So that's a caveat!)

That being said, one thing I do genuinely, unironically love about these books is that they lean into their respective premises as hard as they possibly can. If there's a castle, it WILL have secret passages and ancient suits of armor and everything else you'd want a castle to have. If pirates are mentioned, there will be a wrecked ship full of treasure. If they're going to be around Antarctica, someone will, at some point, have to land an airplane on an iceberg. (That's in Biggles's Second Case, btw - which also is a really enjoyable read!)
