So Voltes V Legacy is a few weeks into its run, and while I hope for Netflix to do the right thing and get the international rights from Toei so I can watch the episodes up close, it’s a fascinating thought process to observe the criticisms and observations from a foreign perspective.

And one of the things they did in fact notice was that in a very similar manner to Voltron Legendary Defender, they have less giant robot fights and more backstory and character development. The producers were open about this, saying that the 80 episode show would have roughly 19 or 20 robot battles, coming out to around once a week. For those curious, Voltron had 7 fights in its 76 episode run.

However, the one thing people have noticed with Voltes is that the robot fights in that show are built to with much higher stakes. Because there are less fights, each one is specifically designed to be more impactful to maximize their effectiveness to the audience. When it’s not a perfect world, you have to use your resources more wisely.

So why is Voltes getting applauded for how it deals with its financial limitations while Voltron is a punchline and something that WEP wants to forget ever happened? I say it boils down to that anticipation, that buildup. If you can’t show the robots every day but every appearance of the robot feels like a big deal, the audience will respond. If you clearly ignore the robot like Voltron did in favor of Avatar style antics, the audiences will notice that too. And their reactions will be noticeable.

It’s still a fascinating comparison to see two cultures and studios remake a show from ANOTHER culture and see what they come up with.

Trinidad and Tobago's First Lady of Dance - "Determined, imperious, flighty, charming, Beryl McBurnie was born in Trinidad and went to New York in the early 1940s to study dance and drama. She also made a name for herself as a dancer and singer, Belle Rosette. But she turned her back on the bright lights to return to Trinidad.

There she continued the work she had begun before World War II, researching and performing the dances of the Caribbean, especially those that drew on African traditions.

She was part of an anticolonial movement that recognized the unique culture of the country and the region and eventually led Trinidad and Tobago to independence.Artistically, McBurnie's work influenced dancers throughout the region and beyond.

She also devoted years to building the Little Carib Theatre. Intended as a home for folk dance, it also housed Derek Walcott's Theatre Workshop and became a crucible for the performing arts."

Listen Oda normally writes the women characters well but this... this was not it. Other than giving Zoro motivation she doesn't really have much of a role in the main story and idk she could've had a more "honorable" death or something

Voltron: The Series

Last stop folks! One I'm sure you already know well This was my introduction into Voltron, fell in love with it, led me to its predecessors, then had a rocky relationship with it, and still do Thanks for joining me so far! I love Voltrons history because there's so much to be inspired from Dotu/VV - V3D - VF - VLD (here)

Oh boy 2016, nothing can go wrong here Frankly this is the better looking Voltron out of all of them, I'm glad to see what 2D and 3D can really do together since VF had a rocky time with that itself. Like I said in the Dotu/VV post, this show is a hard reboot, at most it takes the names and basic legend of the original show and just runs with it. Though it does take inspiration from the previous shows, again with Pidge being a genius, the lions being mystical, and this time I'm fairly sure the bayards were directly inspired from the voltcoms from VF That's the main reason why I don't find it fair to compare Voltron Legendary Defender (VLD) to the other Voltrons because it's not the same story at all, it's its own thing and is pretty well isolated. It has major changes to the story beats, like Lotor not automatically being a villain, the pilots aren't trained soldiers and instead cadets themselves, for a while the team aren't even friends, Allura's planet is renamed (to be fair it's back to the original anime name) and also destroyed, and Pidge is a girl now, which I don't mind but from what I've learned its a joke between older fans since many of them thought dotu Pidge was a girl at first due to his headband. The gist of VLD is vaguely similar to the rest of them, a team of five lands on Altea (Arus) and discovers Voltron which is then used to defend the universe. Like I mentioned though, the team isn't made up of soldiers, most of them are cadets with only one (1) seasoned soldier on the team who has been missing for years until the group found him. They have an Indiana Jones moment and find blue lion hidden away on Earth which abducts the entire team to Arus, a planet unrelated to Altea, where the castle of lions sits locked up. The rest of the show is them learning to work together and the best way to handle dangerous situations when more than just easily ignored lives are on the line. In total, it had 8 seasons in 2 years (yikes), the most of the shows (probably ran too long in retrospect), spawned 3 volumes of comics (15 in total), and brought the return of the toy line. This iteration brought in the most viewers because of the original fans who were still kicking, the animation, the story (in the beginning), and it was on Netflix which many people had at that point so it was easily accessible. It also spawned an incredibly large fandom which could be amazing at some points and down right radioactive at others. Either way though, it created avenues for merchandise, podcasts, fan interactions, and furthering the legacy of Voltron itself! As of this post, there's information slowly coming out about a live action movie for Voltron (probably not VLD related, that ship has sailed lads) which has many fans excited for what's to come

or, the Ever After High au. Keith White, son of Snow White, has only ever wanted his happy ending. Lance Queen, son of the Evil Queen, isn’t quite content with that.

Voltron Legendary Defender AU: Estella Garcia

Background:

Estella was born into a family who held a prominent position at the Black Pearl Institute, a school that trains cadets for space exploration and missions. She attended the school to continue her family’s legacy. She didn’t mind going as space has fascinated her since a young age. She attended as a freshman and due to her remarkable performance, she was chosen for the Montressor Misson, with the older siblings of one of her friends, Yuuto and Yuu. She told her friends that she’d be back before they knew it but sadly she never made it back with the other two.

As they were tending to the Montressor Satellite, they were discovered by a Demon cruiser. The three tried to get away but got captured by the enemy. After half a year of searching for the three, they were declared dead by Black Pearl. They said it was a pilot error and the ship they were on crashed, but there’s no evidence to support this claim.

What really happened was the three had been taken prisoner by the Demons and be made as Gladiators for entertainment of those onboard the mothership, Bald Mountain, a mountain sized ship where the emperor Chernabog lives with his family. Estella became a good gladiator as her family taught her to fight. Unfortunately during a deadly battle, she lost her left arm and it was replaced with a cybernetic one. It proved to be her greatest weapon in those battles.

One night she was sleeping when she was awoken by Caine, one of the princes. He let her out of her cell and helped her to an escape pod. She asked why he was helping her but got the response that he was bored. As soon as she was buckled up in the pod, he set her off. As she was flying in the pod to her home planet, she remembered something she overheard between the princes. Voltron. She had a bad feeling that they would do something bad and had to warn everyone when she returned home.

She was very hesitant to accept the role as leader, thinking she wouldn’t make a good leader.

While she is grounded in most situations, there are times when her emotions get the better of her

She has severe PTSD in this AU and often has nightmares from her time on Bald Mountain

Her trauma blocks out most of her memory of those times and when she remembers she’s incredibly vulnerable for enemy attacks

Determined to look after her friends after failing them once. She doesn’t want them to make that mistake again

Okay. Well. Here's you some brain-dump for a fic I've been obsessing over for the past who knows how long.

Recently, I've been thinking about how to do a voltron/rottmnt crossover. I've only just stumbled upon @ashwii 's Celestial AU (plz go check it out. It's literally AMAZING), and something clickled in my brain.

So, while I've been casually thinking of rotTMNT, but also casually thinking of Voltron (Klance specifically, but whatever floats your boat and doesn't sink the ship LMAO), I have found several ways to now make this crossover happen! (among all the other WIP's I'm currently ignoring 😭)

So, without further adue...

A: I could go the normal route with rottmnt turtles freaking out about SPACE CATS, while the voltron team is freaking out about TEENAGERS with POWERS and apparently a whole hidden world under the surface of earth. I could either take this to space, or have this as one of those random adventures that don't fit with canon plot. ORR, I could do both but make it plot heavy >:) I think this one would be fun to to explore at a later date.

Now, the second one is specifically for the Celestial AU. I hadn't really seen much about it when this idea popped in my head, but the general gist is that the turtles are Celestial's. Raph's domain is the sun, Mikey's is comets, Donnie's is the moon, and Leo's is the stars. I don't know much about the lore yet- as I HAD to type this out before my mind imploded on itself- but from what I do know, Raph is currently the sun in our solar system and can't really "explore" the other domains like his brothers can, so his bros just chill there with him. As for the rest of the lore, that just leaves it up to the creative liberty of any and all artists (please give credit where it's due, though. This is @ashwii 's AU, and while the characters themselves don't belong to her, the au itself does. Respect that.), so lore could go any way you want it to! I'm still in that brainstorming phase, so. Yeah. Now, for the other option:

B: In their own right, I'd say that the Celestial AU turtles are defenders. Maybe in this specific quadrant of the universe. I like to think they protect it as much as they can. But what about the rest of the universe? They don't wanna see if if Raph can't go with them... So, they talk about it. Somehow, they figure out how to put their ✨️Mystic Energy✨️ into things- like putting their life force into something. You'll see why I say that in a moment- but first! I would like to discuss April before continuing. I have my own headcanons (specifically for the purpose of this fic) that I've been playing around with:

Idea One: April, as Ashwii has originally, is an astronaut. But hear me out: She's the one that founded the Garrison. It's her legacy, and her spirit is with anyone there (whether they've left or not). She's the fighting spirit within them all, the very essence of humanity and all that makes them good.

Idea Two: April is an only child (as we've seen in the show), and it's lonely since she doesn't have four mutant brothers to take care of. So, she finds comfort in the universe when she can't find it in people. She openly loves the world- the life and beauty that grows everywhere. She loves nature, she loves the simple things in life, she loves her parents, even those who wronged her- April loves life. I'd imagine she doesn't have many friends, but she's a very loving person, so she finds them in everything else. She talks to the moon like it's an old friend, she openly praises the sheer beauty of metor showers, she thanks the sun and wishes it a good day every day, and when she can... April goes to stargaze to bask in the universe. And when she does, she wishes upon a star. She wishes upon all the stars- as many as she can see. And Leo (I'd love to imagine) can pick up on any wish made to any star.

So, imagine April, wishing to not be lonely. Imagine April, wishing her exams will go well. Imagine April, wishing all the stars a happy night. And then... April, wishing she could explore the universe. Wishing that she was a part of something bigger, wanting to help it live for as long as it can. And, well, you know Leo. He absolutely dazzles when complimented, and he loves helping when he can. He loves April dearly, because with her? He gets to see Donnie chat about the most random things. He gets to see Mikey positively beam when meteors go over the earth (and he knows it's her complimenting them). He gets to see Raph, his dear brother, look forward to warming the earth.

They all collectively agree that April should get the chance to see and protect the universe she loves so dearly: so in comes mother nature. The very essence of life. Any place in the universe that has it, April's there. Everything that is living, she's with them. And this way, she's not lonely anymore. This way, not only will she be able to be with every living thing, but she finally gets to meet her boys.

Now, with all that said, one day in comes Mikey with a bright idea that could let them travel the universe together without explicitly doing so. Mikey supplies the comet , Leo the vast expanse of the universe, Donnie the knowledge of said universe, Raph the sense to love and protect when you dont have to, and April gives it the fighting spirit. The burning determination. Together, they can live.

(Also, I say Mikey supplies the comet because one, Voltron's comet goes through realities, and two, MIKEY CAN LITERALLY RIP OPEN DIMENSIONAL PORTALS WITH HIS BARE HANDS. THE PARALLELS, PEOPLE, THE PARALLELS.)

Now to throw Voltron in here: The comet that has our loved rottmnt characters very essence in it, is the very same one that becomes Voltron. I can just imagine that while the lions are being created, everyone is arguing on color schematics. They can all agree that black can be the "leadership" color, but the rest is chaos. Donnie wants to be purple (you bet he forced the design in the black lion) but ends up being green. Leo is dead set on blue and will bite anyone who says otherwise. Mikey and Raph argue about who gets red, but Raph ultimately gets yellow, Mikey red, and April is just chilling with ALL of them (why do you think the voltron team always calls their lions "she"?) They all collectively have the black lion as a shared consciousness, though. Maybe, depending on the time, Leo or Raph shines with their leadership.

And with that: Voltron begins.

Through Voltron, they share the same experiences the paladins do. The original team on Daibazaal, as well as our loved team.

Ahhh, I could just imagine the voltron team meeting with rottmnt fam via astral projection. You best believe Shiro met them (im not saying why, so I don't spoil the show, but if you know you know).

That about wraps this up. For now, at least. I'm willing to add more later if anything comes to mind ^-^
